This thesis presents four optical spectroscopic studies of absorption by matter in the diffuse interstellar medium on scales ranging from 10 AU to 10 kpc. The observations investigate two current problems in interstellar medium (ISM) research: small-scale structure (SSS), and the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs). Very high spectral resolution observations of interstellar Na I, Ca I, Ca II, K I and CH absorption towards kappa Vel are presented. Combined with observations over the last 15 years taken from the literature, the small-scale structure in front of this star is probed on scales of ~ 10 AU. The high resolution and signal-to-noise of the new observations allow detailed modelling of the absorption profiles and the identification of multiple absorption components. For the two narrowest components, the line profile models are used to constrain the temperature, depletion, electron density and total number density within the structures. Diffuse interstellar bands are used as probes of SSS in long-slit observations of lines-of-sight towards three binary/multiple star systems: HD 168075/6, HD 176269/70 and four members of the mu Sgr system, one of which is identified as a member for the first time. The results show clear variations in DIB absorption in the HD 168075/6 and mu Sgr systems over scales of ~ 50,000-200,000 AU, and demonstrate the efficacy of medium-resolution observations of DIBs for identification of small-scale structure in the ISM. Multi-object spectroscopy of 452 stars in the omega Cen globular cluster is also presented, which probes interstellar absorption by Na I, Ca II and DIBs in two dimensions, on scales of ~ 1 pc. The first detections of diffuse interstellar bands in the M33 galaxy are reported. Multi-object spectroscopy of 43 stars is used to derive spectral types and reddenings, and measure DIB absorption across the disk of the galaxy (~ 10 kpc). Very strong DIB absorption per unit E(B-V) is found for one star in the sample, towards which a total of seven DIBs are detected.

Optical absorption line techniques have been applied to the study of a number of translucent
molecular clouds in which the total column densities are large enough that substantial
molecular abundances can be maintained. Results are presented for a survey of absorption
lines of interstellar C2, CH, and CN. Detections of CN through the A2II -X2E+ (1,0) and
(2,0) bands of the red system are reported, and are compared with observations of the
blue system for one line of sight. The population distributions in C2 provide diagnostic
information on temperature and density. The measured column densities of the three
species can be used to test details of the theory of molecule formation in clouds where
photo -processes still play a significant role. The C2 and CH column densities are strongly
correlated with each other and probably also with the H2 column density. In contrast, the
CN column densities are found to vary greatly from cloud to cloud. The observations are
discussed with reference to detailed theoretical models.

In this thesis we use multi-transitional millimeter/submillimeter-wave molecular spectroscopy of CO and CS to determine the state of the molecular gas in the central regions of three starbursts: M82, IC342, and M83. High angular resolution 60 and 100 μm IRAS images provide complementary information about the thermal dust emission in IC342 and M83. Our CO observations reveal the presence of a molecular ring and supernovae driven wind in M82. In IC342 and M83 there is evidence for molecular bars and central rotating cores. The CO and CS line ratio analyses suggest a multicomponenet medium with clouds externally heated by ultraviolet flux from young, massive stars. Excitation temperatures typically range from 20 to 40 K throughout the nuclear regions of the sample galaxies. In M82 the CO and CS optical depths are ∼ 1. Our analysis of ¹²CO indicates that this gas is optically thick toward the centers of IC342 and M83. The molecular gas mass in each galaxy is ∼ 5x10⁷ M(⊙). We derive an average cloud size between 0.1 and 1 pc in the nuclear region of M82 and M83. An average cloud size of 10 pc is found over a comparable region in IC342. From tidal arguments we find that the clouds must have densities greater than 100 to 1000 cm⁻³ to survive. If the clouds are virialized, then the expected individual cloud linewidths are 9, 40, 5 and 27 km/s for M82, IC342, M83 and the Milky Way, respectively. For the clouds to be pressure-bound, inter-cloud pressures > 10x the peak value in the Galactic Center are required. If the magnetic fields are frozen into the gas, an average field strength of 8.5 mG is needed to support the nuclear clouds in each galaxy from collapse. Enhanced IRAS images reveal bright, compact nuclear components in IC342 and M83. HII regions are seen along spiral arms in IC342 and a dusty bar is seen in M83. The similarity between radio continuum maps and the high resolution IRAS maps suggest that infrared emission arises from HII regions. Using an emissivity law of β ∼ 1.5, the derived dust temperatures in the nuclei of IC342 and M83 are essentially the same as the gas excitation temperatures. For this to occur, gas densities of > 10⁴ cm⁻³ are implied. We derive a star-formation efficiency, ∊, of 77, 60, 10 and 2% for M82, M83, IC342, and the Milky Way, respectively. We find evidence that the gas surface density toward the centers of these galaxies is α ∊. We estimate star-formation rates of 16, 6, 2.5, and .06 M(⊙)/yr for M82, M83, IC342 and the Milky Way. The gas depletion timescales are a few million years for M82 and M83 and a few times 10⁷ and 10⁸ years in IC342 and the Milky Way. We find a strong correlation between cloud diameter and star-formation efficiency, with smaller clouds found in galaxies with higher ∊. We conclude these smaller clouds are a by-product and not a causal factor of the starburst phenomenon.

Eine der zentralen Fragestellungen der modernen Astrophysik ist es, unser Verständnis fuer die Bildung von Sternen und Sternhaufen in unserer Milchstrasse zu erweitern und zu vertiefen. Sterne entstehen in interstellaren Wolken aus molekularem Wasserstoffgas. In den vergangenen zwanzig bis dreißig Jahren ging man davon aus, dass der Prozess der Sternentstehung vor allem durch das Wechselspiel von gravitativer Anziehung und magnetischer Abstossung bestimmt ist. Neuere Erkenntnisse, sowohl von Seiten der Beobachtung als auch der Theorie, deuten darauf hin, dass nicht Magnetfelder, sondern Überschallturbulenz die Bildung von Sternen in galaktischen Molekülwolken bestimmt.<br />
<br />
Diese Arbeit fasst diese neuen Überlegungen zusammen, erweitert sie und formuliert eine neue Theorie der Sternentstehung die auf dem komplexen Wechselspiel von Eigengravitation des Wolkengases und der darin beobachteten Überschallturbulenz basiert. Die kinetische Energie des turbulenten Geschwindigkeitsfeldes ist typischerweise ausreichend, um interstellare Gaswolken auf großen Skalen gegen gravitative Kontraktion zu stabilisieren. Auf kleinen Skalen jedoch führt diese Turbulenz zu starken Dichtefluktuationen, wobei einige davon die lokale kritische Masse und Dichte für gravitativen Kollaps überschreiten koennen. Diese Regionen schockkomprimierten Gases sind es nun, aus denen sich die Sterne der Milchstrasse bilden. Die Effizienz und die Zeitskala der Sternentstehung hängt somit unmittelbar von den Eigenschaften der Turbulenz in interstellaren Gaswolken ab. Sterne bilden sich langsam und in Isolation, wenn der Widerstand des turbulenten Geschwindigkeitsfeldes gegen gravitativen Kollaps sehr stark ist. Überwiegt hingegen der Einfluss der Eigengravitation, dann bilden sich Sternen in dichten Gruppen oder Haufen sehr rasch und mit grosser Effizienz. <br />
<br />
Die Vorhersagungen dieser Theorie werden sowohl auf Skalen einzelner Sternentstehungsgebiete als auch auf Skalen der Scheibe unserer Milchstrasse als ganzes untersucht. Es zu erwarten, dass protostellare Kerne, d.h. die direkten Vorläufer von Sternen oder Doppelsternsystemen, eine hochgradig dynamische Zeitentwicklung aufweisen, und keineswegs quasi-statische Objekte sind, wie es in der Theorie der magnetisch moderierten Sternentstehung vorausgesetzt wird. So muss etwa die Massenanwachsrate junger Sterne starken zeitlichen Schwankungen unterworfen sein, was wiederum wichtige Konsequenzen für die statistische Verteilung der resultierenden Sternmassen hat. Auch auf galaktischen Skalen scheint die Wechselwirkung von Turbulenz und Gravitation maßgeblich. Der Prozess wird hier allerdings noch zusätzlich moduliert durch chemische Prozesse, die die Heizung und Kühlung des Gases bestimmen, und durch die differenzielle Rotation der galaktischen Scheibe. Als wichtigster Mechanismus zur Erzeugung der interstellaren Turbulenz lässt sich die Überlagerung vieler Supernova-Explosionen identifizieren, die das Sterben massiver Sterne begleiten und große Mengen an Energie und Impuls freisetzen. Insgesamt unterstützen die Beobachtungsbefunde auf allen Skalen das Bild der turbulenten, dynamischen Sternentstehung, so wie es in dieser Arbeit gezeichnet wird.<br>Understanding the formation of stars in galaxies is central to much of modern astrophysics. For several decades it has been thought that the star formation process is primarily controlled by the interplay between gravity and magnetostatic support, modulated by neutral-ion drift. Recently, however, both observational and numerical work has begun to suggest that supersonic interstellar turbulence rather than magnetic fields controls star formation. <br />
<br />
This review begins with a historical overview of the successes and problems of both the classical dynamical theory of star formation, and the standard theory of magnetostatic support from both observational and theoretical perspectives. We then present the outline of a new paradigm of star formation based on the interplay between supersonic turbulence and self-gravity. Supersonic turbulence can provide support against gravitational collapse on global scales, while at the same time it produces localized density enhancements that allow for collapse on small scales. The efficiency and timescale of stellar birth in Galactic gas clouds strongly depend on the properties of the interstellar turbulent velocity field, with slow, inefficient, isolated star formation being a hallmark of turbulent support, and fast, efficient, clustered star formation occurring in its absence. <br />
<br />
After discussing in detail various theoretical aspects of supersonic turbulence in compressible self-gravitating gaseous media relevant for star forming interstellar clouds, we explore the consequences of the new theory for both local star formation and galactic scale star formation. The theory predicts that individual star-forming cores are likely not quasi-static objects, but dynamically evolving. Accretion onto these objects will vary with time and depend on the properties of the surrounding turbulent flow. This has important consequences for the resulting stellar mass function. Star formation on scales of galaxies as a whole is expected to be controlled by the balance between gravity and turbulence, just like star formation on scales of individual interstellar gas clouds, but may be modulated by additional effects like cooling and differential rotation. The dominant mechanism for driving interstellar turbulence in star-forming regions of galactic disks appears to be supernovae explosions. In the outer disk of our Milky Way or in low-surface brightness galaxies the coupling of rotation to the gas through magnetic fields or gravity may become important.

Debris discs are typically revealed through the presence of excess emission at infrared wavelengths. Most discs exhibit excess at mid- and far-infrared wavelengths, analogous to the solar system's Asteroid and Edgeworth-Kuiper belts. Recently, stars with strong (similar to 1%) excess at near-infrared wavelengths were identified through interferometric measurements. Using the HIgh Precision Polarimetric Instrument, we examined a sub-sample of these hot dust stars (and appropriate controls) at parts-per-million sensitivity in SDSS g' (green) and r' (red) filters for evidence of scattered light. No detection of strongly polarized emission from the hot dust stars is seen. We, therefore, rule out scattered light from a normal debris disk as the origin of this emission. A wavelength-dependent contribution from multiple dust components for hot dust stars is inferred from the dispersion (the difference in polarization angle in red and green) of southern stars. Contributions of 17 ppm (green) and 30 ppm (red) are calculated, with strict 3-sigma upper limits of 76 and 68 ppm, respectively. This suggests weak hot dust excesses consistent with thermal emission, although we cannot rule out contrived scenarios, e.g., dust in a spherical shell or face-on discs. We also report on the nature of the local interstellar medium (ISM), obtained as a byproduct of the control measurements. Highlights include the first measurements of the polarimetric color of the local ISM and the discovery of a southern sky region with a polarization per distance thrice the previous maximum. The data suggest that lambda(max), the wavelength of maximum polarization, is bluer than typical.

The formation of stars from interstellar gas is the cornerstone of galaxy evolution. This thesis represents work undertaken in order to characterise the role of cool interstellar gas, and its relation to star formation, in galaxy evolution across cosmic time. In particular, it concentrates on star forming galaxies at the extremes of the galaxy assembly spectrum - extremely faint dwarfs, and extremely luminous starbursts - in an attempt to test the limits of galaxy evolution models. The thesis falls into two complimentary halves, addressing topics in the low redshift and high redshift Universe respectively. In the low redshift Universe, I discuss multi-wavelength studies of large samples of z rv O galaxies, which include extremely faint dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume. Using these samples, it is possible to derive a multitude of physical parameters (including star formation rates, stellar masses, and gas masses) which allow the interrelationship between star formation and gas content to be assessed in a statistically significant manner. In particular, modern wide field surveys (combined with deep, volume-limited data) allow trends to be analysed across many orders of magnitude in galaxy mass and star formation rate, shedding light on the global properties of galaxies in the local Universe. Moving to higher redshift, I discuss targeted observations of molecular gas in extreme star forming galaxies in the early Universe. These 'sub-millimetre' galaxies number amongst the most luminous objects ever discovered, and molecular gas observations have the power to uncover many of their physical properties, including their morphologies, kinematics, and star formation behaviour. I begin by presenting high-resolution observations of a small number of these galaxies at z rv 2, and discussing the implications for galaxy evolution studies. The final chapter of this thesis consists of the results of a survey for molecular gas in sub-millimetre galaxies conducted over the last decade, which represents the largest single study of molecular gas in the early Universe to date.

Les comètes sont les vestiges de la "nébuleuse solaire", c'est-à-dire du disque proto-planétaire qui a engendré notre système solaire. Elles sont composées de glaces et de poussières contenant des matériaux et molécules organiques ainsi que des minéraux. La composition des comètes reflète au premier ordre celle des glaces interstellaires. Toutefois, cette filiation n'est pas avérée. Au cours de la période pré-accrétionelle, le matériau cométaire a potentiellement subi l'action de nombreux processus physiques (chauffage, irradiation UV et particulaire) qui ont nécessairement altéré sa structure et sa composition.L'objectif ce cette thèse est de mieux comprendre, grâce à des expériences de laboratoire, l'effet des processus de chauffage et d'irradiation ionique sur des analogues de matière cométaire (glaces et matériaux carbonés). Une partie de ces expériences porte sur l’évolution de la deutération des molécules organiques lors du réchauffement des glaces. Elles ont été menées à l’IPAG (Institut de Planétologie et d’Astrophysique de Grenoble) et au PIIM (Laboratoire de Physique des Interactions Ioniques et Moléculaires) à Marseille. Elles démontrent qu'un équilibrage isotopique a lieu au cours de la cristallisation, sur des échelles de temps de l'ordre de l'heure à des températures supérieures à 120 K, pour les groupements chimiques capables de former des liaisons hydrogènes avec l'eau (groupements -OH et -NH2). Cet équilibrage efface ainsi le fractionnement initial de certaines molécules, ou certains groupements chimiques, dans la phase post-sublimation. Ce résultat permet en particulier d'expliquer la deutération sélective des isotopologues du méthanol dans les cœurs chauds des proto-étoiles.Un second volet de la thèse a porté sur l'étude de la formation de la matière organique réfractaire présente dans les astéroïdes et les comètes. Des expériences de chauffage et d’irradiation ont été menées à l'IPAG, au GANIL (Grand accélérateur national d’ions lourds) à Caen, et au CSNSM (Centre de Sciences Nucléaires et de Sciences de la Matière) à Orsay. Nous montrons qu'un chauffage au-delà de 400° C de précurseurs simples permet la formation de carbones désordonnés polyaromatiques dont la structure est proche de celle observée dans les objets primitifs du système solaire. Les effets de l’irradiation ionique sont plus difficiles à évaluer car ils dépendent du pouvoir d'arrêt des précurseurs cibles et des ions projectiles. Des contraintes sur les doses nucléaires maximales reçues par la matière primitive sont néanmoins déduites (D<14 eV/atome). In fine, ces simulations démontrent qu'un processus de chauffage apparaît comme beaucoup plus probable que les processus radiolytiques, mais une combinaison des deux ne peut pas être exclue.Enfin, cette thèse a bénéficié des premières données in situ de la mission spatiale européenne ROSETTA en orbite autour de la comète Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P) de juillet 2014 à septembre 2016. L’analyse des données du spectro-imageur VIRTIS-M a permis de montrer qu’un matériau organique semi-volatile, contenant notamment des acides carboxyliques, est présent de manière quasi-homogène sur toute la surface de la comète 67P<br>Comets are remnants of the "solar nebula", i.e. the protoplanetary disk from which our solar system formed. They are composed of ice and dust containing minerals and organic materials and molecules. The comets' composition reflects at the first order that of interstellar ices. However, this relationship has not been proven. During the pre-accretional phase, the comet material has potentially undergone the action of many physical processes (heat, UV and particule radiation) which have undoubtedly altered its structure and composition.This thesis objective is to better understand, through laboratory experiments, the effect of heating and ion irradiation processes on cometary matter analogues (ice and carbonaceous materials). Some of these experiments focuses on the evolution of the organic molecules deuteration during ice heating. They were conducted at the IPAG (Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics of Grenoble) and the PIIM (Physics Laboratory of Ionic and Molecular Interaction) in Marseille. They demonstrate that isotopic equilibration takes place during crystallization, on a timescale of an hour at temperatures above 120 K, for the chemical groups capable of forming hydrogen bonds with water (OH and NH2 chemical groups). Thus, this equilibration erases the initial fractionation of certain molecules or certain chemical groups, during the post-sublimation phase. This result explains in particular the selective deuteration of isotopologues methanol in protostars hot cores.A second part of the thesis focused on the study of the formation of refractory organic matter found in asteroids and comets. Heating and irradiation experiments were conducted at the IPAG, at the GANIL (Grand National Accelerator heavy ion) in Caen, and the CSNSM (Nuclear Sciences Centre and the Material Sciences) in Orsay. We show that heating simple precursors above 400° C allows the formation of disordered polyaromatic carbons whose structure is close to that observed in the primitive objetcs of the solar system. Ion irradiation effects are more difficult to assess because they depend on the stopping power of precursors target and projectile ions. Nevertheless, constraints on maximum nuclear doses received by primitive matter are deducted (D>14 eV/atom). La structure du milieu interstellaire est très hétérogène dans notre Galaxie. Les observations, ainsi que les lois d'échelle, suggèrent que sa structure pourrait être fractale. Les plus petites structures de gaz ou clumps auraient un rayon de quelques unités astronomiques et une température de quelques kelvins, les rendant très difficilement détectables. Ces nuages de gaz moléculaires froids et denses peuvent donc être des candidats peu lumineux à une matière noire baryonique.L'objectif de cette thèse est de trouver des indices observationnels de l'existence de ces sous-structures gazeuses. La méthodologie consiste à comparer les magnitudes apparentes d'étoiles à différents intervalles de temps et vers plusieurs directions dans la Galaxie; afin de détecter des variations photométriques temporelles compatibles avec un événement d'obscurcissement. En effet, si un nuage moléculaire se trouve en amont d'une étoile, celle-ci sera obscurcie ou occultée par les sous-structures composant le nuage moléculaire, pendant une certaine durée de temps (dépendant de la vitesse de chaque objet et du temps d'observation considéré). Dans un premier temps, nous avons effectué un traitement photométrique complet pour chercher de tels événements dans l'amas globulaire NGC 4833 en comparant des observations photométriques séparées de six mois. Cet amas fut observé par D. Puy et D. Pfenniger en janvier et juillet 2006. Puis, nous avons utilisé des observations de plusieurs amas globulaires observés par le télescope Hubble, dont la photométrie est connue et rendue publique.Finalement, nous avons développé des méthodes d'apprentissage automatique afin de détecter des événements d'obscurcissement dans le Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Stripe 82.Aucun événement d’obscurcissement d'étoiles n'a pu être détecté ni dans la direction des amas globulaires considérés ni dans la région de Stripe 82. Néanmoins, des simulations d'un nuage fractal ont été réalisées pour estimer la probabilité d’occurrence du phénomène d'obscurcissement d'étoiles. Elles montrent que l’événement est extrêmement rare, ce qui permet d'émettre une nouvelle stratégie d'observation pour augmenter les chances de détecter de tels événements. De plus, les méthodes d'apprentissage automatique utilisées pour cette étude sont appliquées à d'autres objets variables tel que les quasars, très nombreux dans Stripe 82, et peuvent être utilisées pour d'autres objets variables tels que les supernovae<br>The scaling laws and the very appearance of the interstellar medium suggest that this medium might have a fractal structure. The smallest structure of gas called clumps might have a radius about few astronomical units and a very low temperature of few kelvins, making them very difficult to detect. That is why, cold, dense, molecular clouds could be ideal candidates for baryonic dark matter. Because of their low temperature, they do not radiate, and seem to be dark.The aim of this thesis is to highlight observational clues on the existence of clumps by comparing apparent magnitudes of stars at different times, and towards different directions in the Galaxy. If a molecular fractal cloud lies behind a star, it will be obscured or occulted within a certain time (depending on the velocity of each object and on observational time). Therefore the goal of this thesis is to detect magnitude-time variations of stars compatible with an obscuration event.First, we did a complete photometric data reduction of observations of a globular cluster, NGC 4833, carried out by D. Puy and D. Pfenniger in January and July 2006. We wanted to detect obscuration events of stars in NGC 4833, in a six-month period. Then, we used public data of several globular clusters observed by the Hubble Space telescope.Finally, we developed machine learning methods to detect obscuration events in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Stripe 82.No obscuration events were detected either in several globular clusters, or in the Stripe 82 survey. However, we performed simulations of a fractal cloud to estimate probabilities of obscuration events. They show that such events are very rare, allowing us to develop a new observational strategy for increasing the probability of detecting obscuration events. Moreover, machine learning methods used in this study are applied to other variable objects, such as quasars which are numerous inside Stripe 82 survey, and could be used to other variables objects such as supernovae for example

Turbulence, magnetic fields and gravity driven flows are important for the formation of new stars. Although magnetic fields have been proven to be important in the formation of stars, only a few works have been done combining magnetic field and kinematic information. Such studies are important to analyze both gravity and gas dynamics and be able to compare them with the magnetic field. In this thesis we will combine dust polarization studies with kinematic analysis towards different star-forming regions. We aim to study the physical properties at core scales (<0.1 pc) from molecular line and dust emission, and study the role of the magnetic field in their dynamic evolution. For this, we will use millimeter and submillimeter observational data taken towards low- and high- mass star-forming regions in different environments and evolutionary states.
The first project is the study of the physical, chemical and magnetic properties of the pre-stellar core FeSt1-457 in the Pipe nebula. We studied the emission of the molecular line N2H+(1-0) which is a good tracer of dense gas and therefore describes well the structure of the core. In addition, we detected more than 15 molecular lines and found a clear chemical spatial differentiation for molecules with nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur. Using the ARTIST radiative transfer code (Brinch & Hogerheijde 2010, Padovani et al., 2011, 2012, Jørgensen et al., 2014), we simulated the emission of the different molecules detected and estimated their abundance. In addition, we estimated the magnetic field properties of the core (using the Chandrasekhar-Fermi approximation) from polarization data previously obtained by Alves et al., (2014). Finally, we found interesting correlations between the polarization properties and the chemistry in the region.
The second project is the study of a high-mass star-forming region called NGC6334V. NGC6334V is in a more advanced evolutionary state and in an environment surrounded by other massive star-forming regions. During the project we studied the magnetic field from the polarized emission of the dust and also the kinematics of the gas from the molecular line emission of the different tracers of dense gas. From the molecular emission of the gas tracing the envelope of the dense core, we see two different velocity structures separated by 2 km/s and converging towards the potential well in the region. In addition, the magnetic field also presents a bimodal pattern following the distribution of the two velocity structures. Finally, we compared the observational results with 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of star-forming regions dominated by gravity.
The last project is the study of a lower-mass star-forming region, L1287. From the data obtained with the SMA, the dust continuum structure shows six main dense cores with masses between ~0.4 and 4 solar masses. The dense gas tracer DCN(3-2) shows two velocity structures separated by 2-3 km/s, converging towards the highest-density region, the young stellar object IRAS00338+6312, in a similar scenario to the one observed in the higher-mass case of NGC6334V.
Finally, the studies of the pre-stellar core FeSt1-457 and the massive region NGC6334V, show how the magnetic field has been overcome by gravity and is not enough to avoid the gravitational collapse. In addition, NGC6334V and the lower- mass region L1287 present very similar scenarios with the material converging from large scales (~0.1 pc) to the potential wells of both regions at smaller scales (~0.02 pc) through two dense gas flows separated by 2-3 km/s. In a similar scenario, FeSt1-457 is located just in the region where two dense gas structures separated by 3 km/s appear to converge.<br>La turbulencia, el campo magnético y la gravedad juegan un papel importante en la formación estelar. Aunque se ha mostrado que el campo magnético es importante, sólo se han llevado a cabo un número limitado de trabajos combinando el estudio del campo magnético y la cinemática del gas. Este tipo de trabajos son esenciales para estudiar la gravedad y la dinámica del gas y poder compararlas con el campo magnético a las mismas escalas espaciales. En este trabajo combinamos estudios de polarización a partir de la emisión del polvo, con el análisis de la cinemática del gas en diferentes regiones de formación estelar. El objetivo es estudiar las propiedades físicas a escalas de núcleos densos (<0.1 pc) a partir de la emisión molecular y del polvo, y estudiar el papel del campo magnético en la evolución dinámica de las regiones. Para ello hemos utilizado datos observacionales milimétricos y submilimétricos.
Los estudios se han realizado en 3 regiones de formación estelar. El núcleo pre- estelar FeSt 1-457 localizado en un entorno aislado y muy magnetizado en la nebulosa de la Pipa. NGC 6334 V, una región de mayor masa, en un estado evolutivo más avanzado y en un entorno rodeado de otras regiones de formación estelar masiva. Y L1287, una región menos masiva pero con características similares a NGC 6334 V, con presencia de gas de alta velocidad y fuentes centimétricas e infrarrojas.
Los estudios del núcleo pre-estelar FeSt 1-457 y la región de formación estelar de alta masa NGC 6334 V, muestran como el campo magnético ha sido superado por la gravedad y no es suficiente para evitar el colapso gravitatorio. Además NGC 6334 V y la región de menor masa L1287 presentan escenarios muy similares, con el material convergiendo desde escalas grandes hacia los pozos de potencial de ambas regiones a escalas más pequeñas a través de flujos de gas denso separados por 2-3 km/s. En un escenario parecido, FeSt 1-457 se encuentra justo en la zona donde parecen converger dos flujos de gas denso separados por 3 km/s.

Les preuves pour l'existence de la matière noire (MN), sous forme d'une particule inconnue qui rempli les halos galactiques, sont issues d'observations astrophysiques et cosmologiques: son effet gravitationnel est visible dans les rotations des galaxies, des amas de galaxies et dans la formation des grandes structures de l'univers. Une manifestation non-gravitationnelle de sa présence n'a pas encore été découverte. L'une des techniques les plus prometteuse est la détection indirecte de la MN, consistant à identifier des excès dans les flux de rayons cosmiques pouvant provenir de l'annihilation ou la désintégration de la MN dans le halo de la Voie Lactée. Les efforts expérimentaux actuels se focalisent principalement sur une gamme d'énergie de l'ordre du GeV au TeV, où un signal de WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) est attendu. L'analyse des mesures récentes et inédites des rayons cosmiques chargés (antiprotons, électrons et positrons) et leurs émissions secondaires et les améliorations des modèles astrophysiques sont présentées.Les données de PAMELA sur les antiprotons contraignent l'annihilation et la désintégration de la MN de manière similaire (et même légèrement meilleurs) que les contraintes les plus fortes venant des rayons gamma, même dans le cas où les énergies cinétiques inférieures à 10 GeV sont écartées. En choisissant des paramètres astrophysiques différents (modèles de propagation et profils de MN), les contraintes peuvent changer d'un à deux ordres de grandeur. Pour exploiter la totalité de la capacité des antiprotons à contraindre la MN, des effets précédemment négligés sont incorporés et se révèlent être importants dans l'analyse des données inédites de AMS-02 : ajouter les pertes d'énergie, la diffusion dans l'espace des moments et la modulation solaire peut modifier les contraintes, même à de hautes masses. Une mauvaise interprétation des données peut survenir si ces effets ne sont pas pris en compte. Avec les flux de protons et d'hélium exposé par AMS-02, le fond astrophysique et ces incertitudes du ratio antiprotons sur protons sont réévalués et comparés aux données inédites de AMS-02. Aucune indication pour un excès n'est trouvé. Une préférence pour un halo confinant plus large et une dépendance en énergie du coefficient de diffusion plus plate apparaissent. De nouvelles contraintes sur l'annihilation et la désintégration de la MN sont ainsi dérivés.Les émissions secondaires des électrons et des positrons peuvent aussi contraindre l'annihilation et la désintégration de la MN dans le halo galactique : le signal radio dû à la radiation synchrotron des électrons et positrons dans le champs magnétique galactique, les rayons gamma des processus de bremsstrahlung avec le gas galactique et de Compton Inverse avec le champs radiatif interstellaire sont considérés. Différentes configurations de champs magnétique galactique et de modèles de propagation et des cartes de gas et de champs radiatif interstellaire améliorés sont utilisées pour obtenir des outils permettant le calculs des émissions synchrotrons et bremsstrahlung venant de MN de type WIMP. Tous les résultats numériques sont incorporés dans la dernière version du Poor Particle Physicist Coookbook for DM Indirect Detection (PPPC4DMID).Une interprétation d'un possible excès dans les données de rayons gamma de Fermi-LAT au centre galactique comme étant dû à l'annihilation de MN en canaux hadronique et leptonique est analysée. Dans une approche de messagers multiples, le calcul des émissions secondaires est amélioré et se révèle être important pour la détermination du spectre pour le canal leptonique. Ensuite, les limites provenant des antiprotons sur l'annihilation en canal hadronique contraignent sévèrement l'interprétation de cet excès comme étant dû à la MN, dans le cas de paramètres de propagation et de modulation solaire standards. Avec un choix plus conservatif de ces paramètres elles s'assouplissent considérablement<br>Overwhelming evidence for the existence of Dark Matter (DM), in the form of an unknownparticle filling the galactic halos, originates from many observations in astrophysics and cosmology: its gravitational effects are apparent on galactic rotations, in galaxy clusters and in shaping the large scale structure of the Universe. On the other hand, a non-gravitational manifestation of its presence is yet to be unveiled. One of the most promising techniques is the one of indirect detection, aimed at identifying excesses in cosmic ray fluxes which could possibly be produced by DM annihilations or decays in the Milky Way halo. The current experimental efforts mainly focus in the GeV to TeV energy range, which is also where signals from WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) are expected. Focussing on charged cosmic rays, in particular antiprotons, electrons and positrons, as well as their secondary emissions, an analysis of current and forseen cosmic ray measurements and improvements on astrophysical models are presented. Antiproton data from PAMELA imposes contraints on annihilating and decaying DM which are similar to (or even slightly stronger than) the most stringent bounds from gamma ray experiments, even when kinetic energies below 10 GeV are discarded. However, choosing different sets of astrophysical parameters, in the form of propagation models and halo profiles, allows the contraints to span over one or two orders of magnitude. In order to exploit fully the power of antiprotons to constrain or discover DM, effects which were previously perceived as subleading turn out to be relevant especially for the analysis of the newly released AMS-02 data. In fact, including energy losses, diffusive reaccelleration and solar modulation can somewhat modify the current bounds, even at large DM masses. A wrong interpretation of the data may arise if they are not taken into account. Finally, using the updated proton and helium fluxes just released by the AMS-02 experiment, the astrophysical antiproton to proton ratio and its uncertainties are reevaluated and compared to the preliminarly reported AMS-02 measurements. No unambiguous evidence for a significant excess with respect to expectations is found. Yet, some preference for thicker halos and a flatter energy dependence of the diffusion coefficient starts to emerge. New stringed constraints on DM annihilation and decay are derived. Secondary emissions from electrons and positrons can also be used to constrain DM annihilation or decay in the galactic halo. The radio signal due to synchrotron radiation of electrons and positrons on the galactic magnetic field, gamma rays from bremsstrahlung processes on the galactic gas densities and from Inverse Compton scattering processes on the interstellar radiation field are considered. With several magnetic field configurations, propagation scenarios and improved gas density maps and interstellar radiation field, state-of-art tools allowing the computaion of synchrotron and bremssttrahlung radiation for any WIMP DM model are provided. All numerical results for DM are incorporated in the release of the Poor Particle Physicist Coookbook for DM Indirect Detection (PPPC4DMID). Finally, the possible GeV gamma-ray excess identified in the Fermi-LAT data from the Galactic Center in terms of DM annihilation, either in hadronic or leptonic channels is studied. In order to test this tantalizing interprestation, a multi-messenger approach is used: first, the computation of secondary emisison from DM with respect to previous works confirms it to be relevant for determining the DM spectrum in leptonic channels. Second, limits from antiprotons severely constrain the DM interpretation of the excess in the hadronic channel, for standard assumptions on the Galactic propagation parameters and solar modulation. However, they considerably relax if more conservative choices are adopted

This thesis explores the topic of maximum mass stability of neutron stars. The outer structure is detailed and explores nuclear pasta phases, the neutron drip line, and density transitions of matter in the crust and atmosphere layers. Other discussion points include superfluids in the crust and core, vortex roles in neutron stars, and magnetic field effects on the EOS in neutron stars. The inner core is studied in much more detail due to its significant role in EOS. The variety of stars include pion condensate stars, kaon condensate stars, npeu stars, npeu stars with the inclusion of hyperons, quark-hybrid stars, and strange stars. Included with these is a description of nucleon-nucleon, nucleon-nucleon-nucleon interactions, the appearance factors that affect hyperon species, and the formation process of kaons, pions, quarks, and hyperons. The ending EOS are compared with their maximum mass values to determine which ones are likely to limit the mass of neutron stars.

Kinetic data is presented for a variety of ion-neutral reactions which are relevant to the atmosphere of Titan and to the chemistry occurring in interstellar clouds. The data were recorded with a Selected Ion Flow Tube (SIFT) operating at room temperature (294 ± 4 K) and at a pressure of 0.46 Torr. Results of the recent Cassini-Huygens mission to Saturn and Titan have identified several species in the atmosphere of Titan not predicted by pre-Cassini models of the atmosphere. In order to determine the fate of three of these species (methylenimine, propionitrile and cyanodiacetylene) in Titan's ionosphere, their reactivity with the principal ions in Titan's upper ionosphere has been examined. As expected, collision rate proton transfer reactions dominate the chemistry with association channels also observed with many of the hydrocarbon ions. The results of the Cassini mission also identified several individual reactions as being of potential importance to models of Titan's atmosphere and this chemistry has also been examined. The above studies are also relevant to the interstellar medium where each of the neutral reactants have also been detected. The results of some proton transfer equilibrium studies are also presented. The gas phase basicities of propyne and acetylene have been determined to be 681 kJ mol⁻¹ and 617.4 kJ mol⁻¹ respectively. Their relative proton affinities can be estimated from these values. A combined experimental/theoretical study of the proton affinity of cyanodiacetylene (HC₅N) has enabled this value to be estimated at 770 ± 20 kJ mol⁻¹. Details of an attempt to complete the first laboratory measurement of the crucial reaction between H₃⁺ and atomic carbon are presented. The generation of atomic carbon in sufficient quantities for reaction in the SIFT was not possible with the microwave discharge source used. Other generation methods have also been explored with the laser photolysis of carbon suboxide expected to provide a possible solution to the problems encountered. The results of an investigation into the applicability of lithium ions (Li⁺) to SIFT-MS are presented. The lithium ions associated with each of the twenty-one neutral analytes examined to form pseudo-molecular ions. The association reactions were rapid (k ~ 10⁻⁹ cm³ s⁻¹) for large hydrocarbons but were much slower for smaller analytes (k < 10⁻¹¹ cm³ s⁻¹). In order to clarify some unusual experimental observations, the effect of water molecules on the observed chemistry has been examined in detail. The measured chemistry has important consequences for the applicability of Li⁺ to SIFT-MS where the presence and detection of an identifiable ion of the analyte is essential. Details of new SIFT operating software which can be run on a modern computer are given. Mass spectra and kinetic data recorded with the new software are also presented.

La plupart des supernovae dans notre Galaxie explosent dans des amas d’étoiles massives. Avec les vents et les rayonnements intenses des étoiles les plus massives elles forment des bulles chaudes en expansion, d’une taille d’une centaine de parsecs, appelées superbulles. Ces régions de la Galaxie sont des laboratoires de choix pour étudier la rétroaction stellaire sur le milieu interstellaire. Le gaz et les champs magnétiques initialement présents sont balayés. Une cavité se forme, remplie d’un plasma turbulent et traversée par de nombreuses ondes de chocs. Ce type d’environnement peut fortement perturber la propagation des rayons cosmiques. La contribution des superbulles à la production des rayons cosmiques Galactiques reste cependant inconnue. En 2011, le Fermi Large Area Télescope (LAT) a identifié en rayonsγ un coco de jeunes rayons cosmiques, accélérés dans la superbulle de Cygnus X. Cette première découverte a motivé la recherche et l’analyse d’autres amas d’étoiles massives. La proximité de la superbulle d’Orion-Eridanus en fait un bon candidat. Nous avons étudié la partie de la superbulle la plus proche et visible loin du plan Galactique, dans la constellation de l’Éridan. Les observations à différentes longueurs d’ondes du spectre électromagnétique ont permis d’étudier la structure du gaz et des champs magnétiques de la superbulle. À partir des informations en vitesse des raies d’émission du H I et du CO, nous avons identifié différentes coquilles de gaz associées à la superbulle. Elles indiquent une vitesse d’expansion globale de 20 km s−1. Des cartes 3D du rougissement des poussières ont permis de confirmer cette séparation en coquilles et de contraindre leurs distances au Soleil entre 150 et 250 pc. L’absorption des rayons X a permis de les positionner par rapport au gaz chaud de la superbulle. Ce gaz chaud apparaît hétérogène, avec un mélange sur les lignes de visée de plasmas à 0.3-1.2 MK et 3-9 MK. La composante du champ magnétique dans le plan du ciel peut être tracée par l’émission polarisée des poussières observée par Planck. Les données montrent que le champ dans la coquille externe a été réorganisé et comprimé par l’expansion de la superbulle. En utilisant la méthode de Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi et en veillant à la cohérence avec la dynamique du gaz au travers du choc externe, nous avons obtenu des intensités du champ magnétique dans la coquille entre 3 et 15 µG. Nous avons mesuré le flux de rayons cosmiques dans les coquilles de la superbulle avec 10 ans de données du télescope Fermi-LAT entre 0.25 et 63 GeV. À ces énergies, le rayonnement γ trace principalement l’interaction des rayons cosmiques avec le gaz interstellaire. Nous avons modélisé les distributions spatiale et spectrale des rayons γ issus des différentes phases de gaz (atomique, moléculaire, sombre et ionisé). Des émissions γ non liées au gaz sont également prises en compte. Notre analyse révèle que les spectres d’émissivité γ dans les coquilles de la superbulle sont compatibles avec le spectre moyen de rayons cosmiques mesuré dans le milieu interstellaire local et dans le Système Solaire. Une telle homogénéité montre que la superbulle n’est pas active en termes de production et de réaccéléra de rayons cosmiques, et nous discutons plusieurs explications possibles. Un nuage diffus, situé en dehors de la bulle et à une altitude de 200-250 pc sous le plan Galactique, présente une émissivité γ 34% plus faible mais sans modification spectrale. Cette perte de rayons cosmiques est significative et nous avançons l’hypothèse qu’elle est liée à l’orientation des lignes de champ magnétique du nuage qui pointent vers le halo Galactique. Enfin, en compilant nos mesures d’émissivité avec celles d’analyses précédentes, nous avons étudié la variation locale du flux de rayons cosmiques selon l’altitude au-dessus du plan Galactique, et nous comparons ces mesures aux prédictions des modèles<br>Most of the supernovae in our Galaxy explode in massive stellar clusters. Together with the winds and intense radiations from the most massive stars, they create 100-pc-scale, hot expanding bubbles, called superbubbles. Such sites are prime targets to study stellar feedback on the interstellar medium. Theys sweep up gas and magnetic fields. They create cavities filled with turbulent plasmas and shock waves. This type of environment can impact cosmic-ray propagation. The superbubble contribution to the production of Galactic cosmic rays is still unknown. In 2011, the γ-ray Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) detected a cocoon of freshly accelerated cosmic rays in the Cygnus X superbubble. This discovery called for investigations of other massive stellar clusters. The proximity of the Orion-Eridanus superbubble makes it a good candidate. We have studied the closer, Eridanus, side of the superbubble, seen far from the Galactic plane. We have used information across the electromagnetic spectrum to study the superbubble gas and magnetic-field structures. From the velocity information of the H I and CO emission lines, we have identified several gas shells related to the superbubble and we have derived a global expansion velocity of 20 km s−1 . Using 3D dust reddening maps, we have confirmed our shell separation and found that their distances range from about 150 pc to 250 pc from the Sun. X-ray absorption constrained their location relative to the hot gas filling the superbubble interior. The latter appears to be heterogeneous, with a mix of 0.3-1.2 MK and 3-9 MK gas along the lines of sight. Lastly, we have studied the plane-of-sky component of the magnetic field with dust polarised emission observed by Planck. The magnetic field along the outer rim and in the approaching wall of the superbubble appears to be shaped and compressed by the ongoing expansion. Using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method and requiring consistency with the gas dynamics through the outer shock, we have found plane-of-sky field strengths from 3 to 15 µG along the rim. We have studied the cosmic-ray content of the superbbuble using 10 years of Fermi-LAT data between 0.25 and 63 GeV. In this energy range, the γ radiation mainly traces cosmic-ray interactions with interstellar gas. We have thus modelled the spatial and spectral distributions of the γ rays borne in the different gas phases (atomic, molecular, dark, and ionised). The model includes other non-gaseous components to match the data. We have found that the γ-ray emissivity spectrum of the gas along the outer rim and further inside the bubble is consistent with the average cosmic-ray spectrum measured in the local interstellar medium and in the Solar System. This homogeneity shows that little cosmic-ray production and re-acceleration is taking place inside the superbubble. We discuss the implications for cosmic-ray transport conditions. We also find significant evidence that a diffuse atomic cloud lying outside the superbubble, at an altitude of 200-250 pc below the Galactic plane, is pervaded by a 34% lower cosmic-ray flux, but with the same particle energy distribution as the local one. We tentatively propose that the cosmic-ray loss relates to the orientation of the magnetic field lines threading the cirrus, which point towards the halo. Finally, we have gathered the present emissivity measurements with previous estimates obtained around the Sun to show how the local cosmic-ray flux decreases with Galactic altitude and to compare with model prediction

Le milieu interstellaire (MIS) où se forment les étoiles est constitué de gaz très dilué dominé par l'hydrogène moléculaire, et de grains de poussière de taille submicrométrique. Ces poussières jouent un rôle crucial en atténuant la lumière des étoiles lointaines, protégeant ainsi les molécules du gaz des rayonnements ultra-violets, et en servant de catalyseurs à une chimie hétérogène à très basse température. Outre la synthèse de l'hydrogène moléculaire, la surface des grains permet de former des molécules organiques dites complexes comme le méthanol (CH3OH) à partir de l'hydrogénation (et la deutération) du monoxyde de carbone (CO). Les glaces ainsi formées participent à la complexification moléculaire du MIS et seront à terme intégrées au sein de disques de poussières, berceaux des astéroïdes, comètes et exo-planètes. L'objectif de cette thèse est l'étude des mécanismes d'échanges hydrogène-deuterium sur certains groupements fonctionnels de molécules organiques simples, méthanol par exemple, présentes à la surface ou dans les manteaux des grains interstellaires. La thèse est centrée sur une exploration expérimentale de ces processus en phase condensée, à l'aide d'une expérience de cryogénie synthétisant des glaces à très basse température (15K) couplée à un spectromètre infrarouge. Nous montrons que ces échanges se produisent avant la sublimation du manteau de glace sur des groupes fonctionnels capables d'établir des liaisons hydrogènes avec les molécules d'eau voisines. Le processus catalysant est vraisemblablement la cristallisation de la glace d'eau. Des études cinétiques nous permettent d'évaluer les énergies d'activation du transfert H/D (6745K) et de la transition amorphe-cristalline (8100K), et de déterminer la constante de vitesse d'échange dans le domaine de température 120-140~K. Cette constante de vitesse est, de plus, comparée à des calculs semi-classiques basés sur un traitement ab initio. En marge de ces expériences, des observations millimétriques de la molécule de méthanol en direction de proto-étoiles confirment une variabilité des abondances relatives des isotopologues simplement deutérés de cette molécule en fonction de la masse de la protoétoile.

PILOT (Polarized Instrument for Long wavelength Observation of the Tenuous interstellar medium) est une expérience embarquée en ballon stratosphérique destinée à la mesure de l'émission polarisée de notre galaxie dans le submillimétrique. La charge pointée de PILOT est composée d'un télescope au foyer duquel est placée une caméra embarquant 2048 bolomètres, refroidis à 300 mK, mesurant dans deux bandes spectrales (240 µm et 550 µm) et deux polarisations. La détection de la polarisation est réalisée à l'aide d'un polariseur placé à 45° dans le faisceau, le décomposant en deux composantes polarisées orthogonales chacune détectée par un bloc détecteur, et d'une lame demi-onde rotative. L'Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale (Orsay, France) est responsable de la réalisation, de l'intégration, des tests et de l'étalonnage spectral de la caméra. Pour cela deux bancs de mesures sont développés, un pour les essais d'imagerie et de polarisation, et un pour l'étalonnage spectral. L'expérimentation permet de valider l'alignement des optiques froides, de caractériser la qualité optique des images, de caractériser les réponses temporelles et en intensité des détecteurs, et de mesurer la réponse spectrale de la caméra. Un modèle photométrique de l'instrument est développé simulant les différentes configurations pour les essais d'étalonnage spectral, d'imagerie en laboratoire, et en vol, ceci afin d'estimer la puissance totale reçue par chaque pixel du détecteur de chaque configuration. Cette puissance totale est issue de l'émission thermique de l'instrument, de l'atmosphère et des sources observées en vol ou de l'environnement du laboratoire. Une campagne de tests a permis de caractériser et d'étalonner la caméra de l'expérience PILOT. Les premières images dans le domaine du submillimétrique ont été révélées, et les premières réponses spectrales mesurées. Suite à la caractérisation et l'étalonnage spectral, la caméra est alignée avec le miroir primaire sur la nacelle CNES pour des caractérisations et des étalonnages en polarisation de l'instrument complet. Le premier vol est prévu pour le milieu de l'année 2014.

Les comètes présentent un grand intérêt à la fois pour la planétologie et pour l'exobiologie. En effet, ces corps primitifs du fait de leur petite taille et de leurs réservoirs éloignés du soleil, n'ont pas ou que très peu évolué depuis leur formation. L'étude des comètes peut donc permettre de mieux comprendre les processus physico-chimiques ayant eu lieu lors de la formation du Système Solaire. D'autre part, les analyses menées en 1986 dans l'environnement de la comète 1P/Halley ont montré l'existence, dans les grains cométaires d'une phase solide riche en composés organiques. Ainsi, les comètes ont vraisemblablement pu apporter sur la Terre primitive des composés organiques, et favoriser ainsi l'apparition de la Vie. Néanmoins la nature de cette matière organique reste encore très largement méconnue. Ces composés organiques ont vraisemblablement été formés à partir des glaces observées dans le milieu interstellaire et qui sont soumises à différentes sources d'énergie. Les objectifs du travail expérimental mené au cours de cette thèse ont donc été de caractériser les différentes étapes conduisant à la synthèse des composés organiques complexes contenus dans les comètes à partir des glaces interstellaires. En particulier, j'ai étudié i.) la quantification des glaces présentes autour des étoiles naissantes, ii.) les processus de photolyse auxquels elles sont soumises et iii.) la nature des composés organiques qui peuvent être produits durant ces processus. Les observations infrarouges ont permis de détecter de nombreuses molécules en phase condensée autour des étoiles naissantes. Afin de préciser l'abondance de ces molécules, j'ai mesuré les sections efficaces intégrées, aussi appelées forces de bandes, pour huit d'entre elles (H2O, CO, CO2, CH3OH, NH3, CH4, HCOOH and H2CO). En effet, ce paramètre spectroscopique est nécessaire à la quantification des molécules et certaines des valeurs présentes dans la littérature affichaient une grande dispersion. Les nouvelles mesures que j'ai effectuées, basées sur une revue bibliographique exhaustive des masses volumiques et des indices optiques dans le visible, confirment pour certaines molécules (CO2, CO, CH4, NH3) les valeurs utilisées pour déterminer leur abondance. Néanmoins, j'ai pu montrer que les abondances d'autres molécules dans les milieux astrophysiques restent encore très incertaines, en particulier pour CH3OH, H2CO et HCOOH. En phase condensée, la dépendance en longueur d'onde des processus de photolyse est encore très largement négligée. Grâce à l'utilisation de deux lampes VUV, dont l'irradiance spectrale a été préalablement caractérisée, j'ai pu mesurer, dans deux gammes de longueurs d'onde différentes, les rendements quantiques de production de C2H6 et de CO lors de la photolyse de CH4 et CO2. J'ai ainsi pu confirmer que les rendements quantiques dépendent bien de la longueur d'onde de photolyse. L'extrapolation des résultats expérimentaux acquis en laboratoire aux différents milieux astrophysiques nécessite donc une bonne connaissance des spectres VUV mis en jeu. L'objectif final des simulations expérimentales est de prédire la nature de la matière organique cométaire en reproduisant au mieux la chimie pouvant se dérouler dans les glaces interstellaires. Or, le méthane a été détecté en phase condensée dans le milieu interstellaire, mais son influence sur la chimie se déroulant dans des mélanges de glaces contenant les principales molécules interstellaires a été très peu étudiée. J'ai donc soumis un mélange H2O : CH3OH : NH3 : CH4 (10 : 1 : 1 : 2) à une photolyse de 26 heures puis à un chauffage. L'influence du méthane se manifeste par la présence de C2H6 après la photolyse à basse température. Lors du chauffage, le méthane et ses photoproduits semblent se sublimer. Avec ou sans CH4, la chimie à des températures supérieures à 200 K apparaît très similaire. J'en conclu donc que la présence de méthane ne modifie pas notablement la chimie des glaces lors des simulations<br>Comets are very interesting for planetology as well as for exobiology. On one hand, held in the furthest and coldest regions of our solar system and due to their small size, they might not have been altered since their formation. The study of comets should allow a better understanding of the physic-chemical processes occurring during the Solar system formation. On the other hand, the analysis performed in 1986 on the environment of 1P/Halley showed the presence, in the cometary dust, of organic matter. Thus, comets might have brought organics on primitive Earth which might have contributed to the apparition of life. Nevertheless, the nature of these organics is still not well-known. Cometary organics might have been synthesized from the ices detected in interstellar medium which are submitted to different energetic processes. The aims of the experimental work performed during this thesis are to characterize the different steps of the synthesis of complex organic matter contained in comets from the interstellar ices. I studied : i) The quantification of interstellar ices detected around young stellar objects ii) The characterization of the photolysis process to which ices are submitted and iii.) The nature of the organic compounds produced during these processes. Once mixtures and energetic processes are under control, we can make cometary organic analogs. Infrared observations have revealed the presence of several molecules in the solid phase around young stellar objects. To precise their molecular abundances, I have measured the integrated cross sections, also called band strengths, of 8 molecules (H2O, CO, CO2, CH3OH, NH3, CH4, HCOOH and H2CO). Indeed, this spectroscopic parameter is required for the quantification of these molecules and some values presented in literature are scattered. The new measurements performed during this thesis, which are based on a bibliographic review of densities and optical indices in the visible range, confirm the values already used for the quantification of CO2, CO, CH4, NH3. But this work also underlines that abundances of CH3OH, H2CO and HCOOH in interstellar medium are still uncertain. In the solid phase, wavelength dependence of photolysis is often neglected. Thanks to two VUV lamps, for which the spectral irradiances have been characterized, I measured the production quantum yield, in two wavelength ranges, of C2H6 and CO, during photolysis of CH4 and CO2 respectively. Thanks to this study, I point out that quantum yield depends on the photolysis wavelength. Thus, the extrapolation of the experimental results to different astrophysical medium implies a good knowledge of VUV spectra. The final objective of experimental simulations is to foresee the nature of cometary organic matter by reproducing, as realistic as possible, the chemistry occurring in interstellar ices. Methane has been detected in the solid phase in the interstellar medium, but few studies implying methane have been undertaken. Thus, I have photolyzed a mixture composed of H2O: CH3OH: NH3: CH4 (10:1:1:2) during 26 hours at low temperature and then I applied a heating process. The influence of initial methane in the ice chemistry is demonstrated by the presence of its main photoproducts, C2H6, after photolysis. But while increasing temperature, methane and its photoproducts seem to sublimate. Therefore, with or without methane, chemistry occurring at temperature higher than 200K seems to be very similar. I conclude than methane does not have significant influence on ice chemistry

Bow shocks and related density enhancements produced by the winds of massive stars moving through the interstellar medium provide important information regarding the motions of the stars, the properties of their stellar winds, and the characteristics of the local medium. Since bow-shock nebulae are aspherical structures, light scattering within them produces a net polarization signal even if the region is spatially unresolved. Scattering opacity arising from free electrons and dust leads to a distribution of polarized intensity across the bow-shock structure. That polarization encodes information about the shape, composition, opacity, density, and ionization state of the material within the structure. In this paper, we use the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code SLIP to investigate the polarization created when photons scatter in a bow-shock-shaped region of enhanced density surrounding a stellar source. We present results for electron scattering, and investigate the polarization behaviour as a function of optical depth, temperature, and source of photons for two different cases: pure scattering and scattering with absorption. In both regimes, we consider resolved and unresolved cases. We discuss the implications of these results as well as their possible use along with observational data to constrain the properties of observed bow-shock systems. In different situations and under certain assumptions, our simulations can constrain viewing angle, optical depth and temperature of the

Context. The structure of the inner parts of Be star disks (≲ 20 stellar radii) is well explained by the viscous decretion disk (VDD) model, which is able to reproduce the observable properties of most of the objects studied so far. The outer parts, on the other hand, are not observationally well-explored, as they are observable only at radio wavelengths. A steepening of the spectral slope somewhere between infrared and radio wavelengths was reported for several Be stars that were previously detected in the radio, but a convincing physical explanation for this trend has not yet been provided.
Aims. We test the VDD model predictions for the extended parts of a sample of six Be disks that have been observed in the radio to address the question of whether the observed turndown in the spectral energy distribution (SED) can be explained in the framework of the VDD model, including recent theoretical development for truncated Be disks in binary systems.
Methods. We combine new multi-wavelength radio observations from the Karl. G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) and Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) with previously published radio data and archival SED measurements at ultraviolet, visual, and infrared wavelengths. The density structure of the disks, including their outer parts, is constrained by radiative transfer modeling of the observed spectrum using VDD model predictions. In the VDD model we include the presumed effects of possible tidal influence from faint binary companions.
Results. For 5 out of 6 studied stars, the observed SED shows strong signs of SED turndown between far-IR and radio wavelengths. A VDD model that extends to large distances closely reproduces the observed SEDs up to far IR wavelengths, but fails to reproduce the radio SED. Using a truncated VDD model improves the fit, leading to a successful explanation of the SED turndown observed for the stars in our sample. The slope of the observed SEDs in the radio is however not well reproduced by disks that are simply cut off at a certain distance. Rather, some matter seems to extend beyond the truncation radius, where it still contributes to the observed SEDs, making the spectral slope in the radio shallower. This finding is in agreement with our current understanding of binary truncation from hydrodynamical simulations, in which the disk does extend past the truncation radius. Therefore, the most probable cause for the SED turndown is the presence of binary companions that remain undetected for most of our sources.

Les poussières interstellaires sont des particules solides dont les tailles sont comprises entre le nanomètre et le micron. Bien que représentant une faible proportion en masse du milieu interstellaire, elles jouent un rôle essentiel dans son évolution et de façon générale dans l'évolution des galaxies. Les poussières interstellaires sont observables dans les domaines UV et visible en extinction et de l'infrarouge au submillimétrique en émission. La conduite d'observations astrophysiques conjuguée au développement de modèles numériques de poussières et à l'étude d'analogues de grains en laboratoire permet d'affiner notre connaissance de ces particules solides. En particulier, il existe aujourd'hui de nombreuses preuves d'une évolution des grains dans le milieu interstellaire. Cependant, les processus physiques responsables de cette évolution sont aujourd'hui encore mal connus. Afin de comprendre comment évoluent les grains avec les propriétés physiques, il est nécessaire d'observer les poussières dans différents environnements. Les régions de photodissociation (PDR) sont des zones du milieu interstellaire présentant l'avantage de voir leur champ de rayonnement et leur densité locale varier sur de faibles échelles spatiales (~10- 20 arcsec). De plus, la grande variété de traceurs du gaz permet de contraindre efficacement les conditions physiques dans les PDR. Toutefois, l'émission des grains à l'équilibre thermique dans les PDR, qui domine l'émission dans l'infrarouge lointain, n'était que rarement résolue spatialement. Les instruments PACS et SPIRE, à bord de l'observatoire spatial Herschel, permettent aujourd'hui de disposer d'observations spectro-photométriques entre 70 et 500 µm, dont la résolution spatiale (comprise entre 5 et 35 arcsec) en fait des données idéales pour l'étude de l'évolution des poussières dans les PDR. Nous présentons l'analyse des observations Herschel de trois PDR, la Barre d'Orion, la Tête de Cheval et la NGC 7023 Est, caractérisées par des conditions physiques différentes. En combinant ces données aux observations Spitzer, nous pouvons étudier simultanément l'émission des poussières entre 3.6 et 500 µm à différentes positions de la PDR. Pour cela, des profils d'intensité reliant l'étoile à la PDR sont extraits à chaque longueur d'onde puis comparés spatialement. Un décalage de la position du pic d'émission dû au transfert radiatif est observé : plus la longueur d'onde est grande, plus le pic est éloigné de l'étoile excitatrice. Par contre, la comparaison entre les profils d'intensité observés et ceux calculés à partir d'un code de transfert de rayonnement couplé à un modèle de poussières correspondant aux propriétés du milieu interstellaire diffus révèle des différences liées à une évolution des grains pour chaque PDR étudiée. A la vue des écarts, nous concluons que l'abondance des PAH, plus petite composante de grains interstellaires, est plus faible dans les PDR que dans le milieu diffus suggérant la présence d'un phénomène de photo-destruction et/ou d'agrégation des PAH sur les gros grains dans les PDR. Ceci pourrait être accompagné d'une augmentation d'émissivité des gros grains liée à un mécanisme de coagulation. Les observations Herschel des PDR nous offrent également l'opportunité de nous intéresser aux variations du spectre des grains à l'équilibre thermique avec le rayonnement au travers des PDR. Un ajustement d'une loi de corps noir modifié permet d'extraire une épaisseur optique, une température et un indice spectral des grains. L'étude de ces deux derniers paramètres révèle une anticorrélation confirmant ainsi des travaux précédents. Cependant, la comparaison de la dépendance de la température et de l'indice spectral dans différentes régions montre différents comportements et exclut une dépendance universelle entre ces deux paramètres. Ce résultat ouvre de nouvelles perspectives quant à l'étude de l'évolution des poussières dans le milieu interstellaire.

Nous retraçons la vie et le parcours professionnel de Jean Dufay, et ce fil directeur permet d'étudier en même temps le développement des observations et des recherches astrophysiques dans les Observatoires de Lyon et de Haute-Provence. Jean Dufay nait à Blois en 1896. Après son engagement militaire pendant la première guerre mondiale, il entre à l'ENS et obtient l'agrégation de physique en 1921. Il enseigne pendant sept ans dans des lycées, tout en préparant une thèse de doctorat, qu'il soutient en 1928 : Recherches sur la lumière du ciel nocturne.Il choisit alors une nouvelle carrière et entre en 1929 à l'Observatoire de Lyon, comme aide-astronome. Il devient directeur de l'établissement en 1933 et oriente son équipe vers des recherches d'astrophysique stellaire. D'autre part, Jean Dufay fait partie dès 1932 de la commission ministérielle qui étudie la création d'un observatoire d'astrophysique. Il est nommé en 1937 directeur de ce futur établissement, qui deviendra l'Observatoire de Haute-Provence (OHP). Tout en gardant la direction de l'Observatoire de Lyon, il coordonne la construction et l'équipement de l'OHP, qui devient en 1959 l'un des plus modernes d'Europe avec un télescope de 193 cm associé à un grand spectrographe.Jean Dufay dirige les deux observatoires jusqu'à sa retraite en 1966, tout en enseignant à la Faculté des Sciences et en continuant ses recherches astrophysiques. Il publie de nombreux articles et plusieurs livres. Il préside une commission de l'UAI. He published numerous articles and several books. He chaired a commission of the IAU, and gained genuine recognition in the international scientific community of his time.Jean Dufay was one of the actors of the renewal of astronomy in France, in the second third of the twentieth century. When he arrived in Lyon, the observatory mainly worked for positional astronomy, with methods that had been unchanged since 1880. In less than ten years, this kind of research fell into disuse and was replaced by precision photometry and spectrophotometry. After the Second World War, astrophysical practices were integrated for good into Lyon Observatory, which then works in synergy with OHP

Polarization is a powerful tool for understanding stellar atmospheres and circumstellar environments. Mira and semi-regular variable stars have been observed for decades and some are known to be polarimetrically variable, however, the semi-regular variable V Canes Venatici displays an unusually large, unexplained amount of polarization. We present ten years of optical polarization observations obtained with the HPOL instrument, supplemented by published observations spanning a total interval of about forty years for V CVn. We find that V CVn shows large polarization variations ranging from 1 - 6%. We also find that for the past forty years the position angle measured for V CVn has been virtually constant suggesting a long-term, stable, asymmetric structure about the star. We suggest that this asymmetry is caused by the presence of a stellar wind bow shock and tail, consistent with the star's large space velocity.

Ces grains sont recouverts d'un manteau glacé contenant des molécules primitives. Au cours de l'évolution des nuages moléculaires vers des systèmes planétaires, les grains sont soumis à des processus énergétiques transformant la matière organique présente dans les glaces. Les grains finissent par être intégrés dans les petits corps du système solaire tels que les comètes et les astéroïdes. Cette thèse cherche à simuler en laboratoire l'évolution chimique de ces glaces. Des analogues de ces glaces sont formés sur un substrat à basse température, et sont irradiés avec des photons UV et/ou réchauffés afin de simuler les processus astrophysiques. On forme ainsi un résidu organique que l'on caractérise grâce à la spectroscopie infrarouge à transformée de Fourier (IRTF) et la spectrométrie de masse à très haute résolution (VHRMS) par Orbitrap.Nous avons d'abord effectué des études mécanistiques centrées autour de la formation d'aminoalcools et d'hydroxynitriles lors du réchauffement de glaces contenant de l'acétaldéhyde (CH$_3$CHO) ou de l'acétone ((CH$_3$)$_2$CO) avec NH$_3$, HCN et H$_2$O. Nous avons ensuite étudié la composition globale de résidus issus de l'irradiation et du réchauffement de glaces contenant H$_2$O, CH$_3$OH, et NH$_3$. These grains are covered by icy mantles containing primitive molecules. Dense molecular clouds can collapse and lead to the formation of planetary systems such as our own. During this evolution, the grains are exposed to energetic processes which transform the organic matter inside the ices. The grains are ultimately incorporated into small solar system bodies such as comets and asteroids, which can then contribute to the exogenous delivery of organic matter on Earth. In this context, this thesis focuses on simulating the chemical evolution of ices. To that end, ice analogues are formed by condensing a relevant gas mixture on a cold substrate. These interstellar ice analogues are irradiated with UV photons and/or heated in order to simulate astrophysical processes. An organic residue is formed which we characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and very high resolution mass spectrometry (VHRMS) by Orbitrap.First, we performed mechanistic studies focused on the formation of aminoalcohols and hydroxynitriles from the warming of ices containing acetaldehyde (CH$_3$CHO) or acetone ((CH$_3$)$_2$CO) with NH$_3$, HCN and H$_2$O. Secondly, we studied the global composition of residues made from irradiation and warming of ices containing H$_2$O, CH$_3$OH, and NH$_3$. We present a new approach to interpret Orbitrap data of the residues. Cool molecular hydrogen H2 may be the ultimate possible constituent to the Milky-Way missing baryon. We describe a new way to search for such transparent matter in the Galactic disc and halo, through the diffractive and refractive effects on the light of background stars. By simulating the phase delay induced by a turbulent medium, we computed the corresponding illumination pattern on the earth for an extended source and a given passband. We show that in favorable cases, the light of a background star can be subjected to stochastic fluctuations of the order of a few percent at a characteristic time scale of a few minutes. We have searched for scintillation induced by molecular gas in visible dark nebulae as well as by hypothetical halo clumpuscules of cool molecular hydrogen (H2_He) during two nights, using the NTT telescope and the IR SOFI detector. Amongst a few thousands of monitored stars, we found one light-curve that is compatible with a strong scintillation effect through a turbulent structure in the B68 nebula. Because no candidate were found toward the SMC, we are able to establish upper limits on the contribution of gas clumpuscules to the Galactic halo mass. We show that the short time-scale monitoring of a few 10^6 star _ hour in the visible band with a >4 m telescope and a fast readout camera should allow one to interestingly quantify or constrain the contribution of turbulent molecular gas to the Galactic halo.
