Pathan, Al-Mukaddim Khan. "Utility-oriented internetworking of content delivery networks". Connect to thesis, 2009. http://repository.unimelb.edu.au/10187/7039.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Today’s Internet content providers primarily use Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) to deliver content to end-users with the aim to enhance their Web access experience. Yet the prevalent commercial CDNs, operating in isolation, often face resource over-provisioning, degraded performance, and Service Level Agreement (SLA) violations, thus incurring high operational costs and limiting the scope and scale of their services.
To move beyond these shortcomings, this thesis sets out to establish the basis for developing advanced and efficient content delivery solutions that are scalable, high performance, and cost-effective. It introduces techniques to enable coordination and cooperation between multiple content delivery services, which is termed as “CDN peering”. In this context, this thesis addresses five key issues ― when to peer (triggering circumstances), how to peer (interaction strategies), whom to peer with (resource discovery), how to manage and enforce operational policies (re-quest-redirection and load sharing), and how to demonstrate peering applicability (measurement study and proof-of-concept implementation).
Thesis Contributions: To support the thesis that the resource over-provisioning and degraded performance problems of existing CDNs can be overcome, thus improving Web access experience of Internet end-users, we have:
- identified the key research challenges and core technical issues for CDN peering, along with a systematic understanding of the CDN space by covering relevant applications, features and implementation techniques, captured in a comprehensive taxonomy of CDNs;
- developed a novel architectural framework, which provides the basis for CDN peering, formed by a set of autonomous CDNs that cooperate through an interconnection mechanism, providing the infrastructure and facilities to virtualize the service of multiple providers;
- devised Quality-of-Service (QoS)-oriented analytical performance models to demonstrate the effects of CDN peering and predict end-user perceived performance, thus facilitating to make concrete QoS performance guarantees for a CDN provider;
- developed enabling techniques, i.e. resource discovery, server selection, and request-redirection algorithms, for CDN peering to achieve service responsiveness. These techniques are exercised to alleviate imbalanced load conditions, while minimizing redirection cost;
- introduced a utility model for CDN peering to measure its content-serving ability by capturing the traffic activities in the system and evaluated through extensive discrete-event simulation analysis. The findings of this study provide incentive for the exploitation of critical parameters for a better CDN peering system design; and
- demonstrated a proof-of-concept implementation of the utility model and an empirical measurement study on MetaCDN, which is a global overlay for Cloud-based content delivery. It is aided with a utility-based redirection scheme to improve the traffic activities in the world-wide distributed network of MetaCDN.

Foo, Justin. "Exploiting multiuser diversity with capture in wireless networks". University of Western Australia. School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering, 2009. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2009.0168.

Abstract (sommario):
In a wireless network, owing to the time-varying nature of wireless channels, different mobile users typically experience peaks and troughs in channel quality at different times. This diversity in channel quality is known as multiuser diversity. With the aid of rate adaptation, multiuser diversity can be exploited by allowing the mobile user with the best channel to use the channel resource. However, in order to achieve this in most practical systems, the mobile users in the network must feed back their channel state information (CSI) to the transmitting user. In large networks, this feedback overhead can outweigh the multiuser diversity gain. In this thesis dissertation, a centralised wireless medium access control (MAC) scheme, namely Multiuser Diversity with Capture (MDC), is discussed as a solution to obviate the overhead problem. MDC explicitly employs the capture effect in radio receivers to reduce network overhead by allowing multiple mobile stations (MSs) with channels better than a nominal response threshold to simultaneously compete for the wireless channel. Owing to the capture effect, the base station (BS) can determine which MS has the best channel. In comparison with the Medium Access Diversity (MAD) scheme in the literature, the proposed MDC possesses the strong merit that the feedback overhead is independent of the number of MSs in the network. Several aspects of the MDC scheme are investigated in detail. An application of the MDC scheme based on the physical layer and parts of the MAC layer of the IEEE 802.11a standard is considered. A general analytical framework for the goodput performance of MDC is derived. Using this framework, the exact closed form solution for the expected goodput of MDC with rate adaptation over Rayleigh fading channels is calculated. The fairness performance of MDC in networks where some MSs experience better average channel conditions than others is also addressed. MSs with low average channel states tend to use the channel less often in MDC than MSs with high average channel states. This issue is tackled with Fairer Multiuser Diversity with Capture (FMDC), a variant of the MDC scheme designed to share the channel resource more equitably across all of the MSs in the network. In FMDC, instead of using the network-wide response threshold to decide whether to compete for the channel, each MS only competes for the channel when their channel state is greater than a threshold factor multiplied by their average channel state. Finally, the problem of adaptive optimisation of the response threshold for MDC and the threshold factor for FMDC is also considered. In the proposed solution, the response threshold and the threshold factor are adapted heuristically according to the estimated goodput performance of the system. The adaptive heuristic has importance in practical systems because the BS usually does not know the characteristics of the time varying channels of the MSs in the network.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent times, the imminent lack of public IPv4 addresses has attracted the attention of both the research community and industry. The cellular industry has decided to combat this problem by using IPv6 for all new terminals. However, the success of 3G network deployment will depend on the services offered to end users. Currently, almost all services reside in the IPv4 address space, making them inaccessible to users in IPv6 networks. Thus, an intermediate translation mechanism is required. Previous studies on network address translation methods have shown that Realm Base Kluge Address Heuristic-IP, REBEKAH-IP supports all types of services that can be offered to IPv6 hosts from the public IPv4 based Internet, and provides excellent scalability. However, the method suffers from an ambiguity problem which may lead to call blocking. This thesis presents an improvement to REBEKAH-IP scheme in which the side effect is removed, creating a robust and fully scalable system. The improvement can be divided into two major tasks including a full investigation on the scalability of addressing and improvements to the REBEKAH-IP scheme that allow it to support important features such as ICMP and IP mobility. To address the first task a method called REBEKAH-IP with Port Extension (RPX) is introduced. RPX is extended from the original REBEKAH-IP scheme to incorporate centralised management of both IP address and port numbers. This method overcomes the ambiguity problem, and improves scalability. We propose a priority queue algorithm to further increase scalability. Finally, we present extensive simulation results on the practical scalability of RPX with different traffic compositions, to provide a guideline of the expected scalability in large-scale networks. The second task concerns enabling IP based communication. Firstly, we propose an ICMP translation mechanism which allows the RPX server to support important end-toend control functions. Secondly, we extend the RPX scheme with a mobility support scheme based on Mobile IP. In addition, we have augmented Mobile IP with a new tunneling mechanism called IP-in-FQDN tunneling. The mechanism allows for unique mapping despite the sharing of IP addresses while maintaining the scalability of RPX. We examine the viability of our design through our experimental implementation.

Abstract: In this work we have investigated the performance of advanced optical networks, more specifically optical packet switched networks (OPSN), with architectures comprising fully connected mesh topologies and optical bufferless nodes. We have adopted uniform traffic distribution, in which all nodes generate the same traffic to every other node. Several parameters of the OPSNs have been evaluated, mainly average number of hops and effective network capacity, as well as comparisons between the ring and mesh network topologies, considering as main parameters the network throughput and performance, and the impacts caused by failures of links. We demonstrate that increasing the number of nodes in OSPNs does not necessarily increase performance or capacity

Abstract (sommario):
The Internet and networks in general have become essential tools for disseminating in-formation. Search engines have become the predominant means of finding information on the Web and all other data repositories, including local resources. Domain scientists regularly acquire and analyze images generated by equipment such as microscopes and cameras, resulting in complex image files that need to be managed in a convenient manner. This type of integrated environment has been recently termed a netcentric sci-entific research repository. I developed a number of data manipulation tools that allow researchers to manage their information more effectively in a netcentric environment. The specific contributions are: (1) A unique interface for management of data including files and relational databases. A wrapper for relational databases was developed so that the data can be indexed and searched using traditional search engines. This approach allows data in databases to be searched with the same interface as other data. Fur-thermore, this approach makes it easier for scientists to work with their data if they are not familiar with SQL. (2) A Web services based architecture for integrating analysis op-erations into a repository. This technique allows the system to leverage the large num-ber of existing tools by wrapping them with a Web service and registering the service with the repository. Metadata associated with Web services was enhanced to allow this feature to be included. In addition, an improved binary to text encoding scheme was de-veloped to reduce the size overhead for sending large scientific data files via XML mes-sages used in Web services. (3) Integrated image analysis operations with SQL. This technique allows for images to be stored and managed conveniently in a relational da-tabase. SQL supplemented with map algebra operations is used to select and perform operations on sets of images.

Rathnam, Tarun. "Using Ontologies to Support Interoperability in Federated Simulation". Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/4788.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A vast array of computer-based simulation tools are used to support engineering design and analysis activities. Several such activities call for the simulation of various coupled sub-systems in parallel, typically to study the emergent behavior of large, complex systems. Most sub-systems have their own simulation models associated with them, which need to interoperate with each other in a federated fashion to simulate system-level behavior. The run-time exchange of information between federate simulations requires a common information model that defines the representation of simulation concepts shared between federates. However, most federate simulations employ disparate representations of shared concepts. Therefore, it is often necessary to implement transformation stubs that convert concepts between their common representation to those used in federate simulations. The tasks of defining a common representation for shared simulation concepts and building translation stubs around them adds to the cost of performing a system-level simulation. In this thesis, a framework to support automation and reuse in the process of achieving interoperability between federate simulations is developed. This framework uses ontologies as a means to capture the semantics of different simulation concepts shared in a federation in a formal, reusable fashion. Using these semantics, a common representation for shared simulation entities, and a corresponding set of transformation stubs to convert entities from their federate to common representations (and vice-versa) are derived automatically. As a foundation to this framework, a schema to enable the capture of simulation concepts in an ontology is specified. Also, a graph-based algorithm is developed to extract the appropriate common information model and transformation procedures between federate and common simulation entities. As a proof of concept, this framework is applied to support the development of a federated air traffic simulation. To progress with the design of an airport, the combined operation of its individual systems (air traffic control, ground traffic control, and ground-based aircraft services) in handling varying volumes of aircraft traffic is to be studied. To do so, the individual simulation models corresponding to the different sub-systems of the airport need to be federated, for which the ontology-based framework is applied.

Abstract: Internet increase and diversity demand ¿smart¿ tools that could make possible to routing protocols self-adapt to network current state (its topology and congestion situation). Smart tools, although, can result in great processing and communication overload. This work presents, besides a new adaptive OSPF routing strategy based on bandwidth estimations, a simulation platform able to expose results of network performance while experimenting (or not) the proposed adaptive routing strategy. The performance analysis is accomplished due to a model, developed in OPNET network simulator, that adds to a router model modules to bandwidth estimation and link cost updating. These additional modules allow OSPF protocol to take its routing decisions based on network link conditions and on desired link qualities. Network topology is represented by a graph and the traffic presented during simulation is specified by distribution functions acting in specific routers during established intervals. The possibility of configuring various traffic generation functions, acting from various network points in independent intervals, ensures certain network traffic dynamic representation. The simulation results offer an analysis of the proposed OSPF adaptive routing strategy, in comparison to the conventional OSPF routing, in terms of network performance parameters

Abstract: The behavior of VoIP traffic in network links is addressed in this work. VoIP applications have strict requirements for quality of service (QoS) that should be provided for in the network design. In this sense, the Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP) is displayed as model of process of arrivals that is appropriate to characterize the behavior of superposition of VoIP traffic sources. It is taken into account that VoIP applications use the mechanism Suppression of Silence to save bandwidth, which makes the traffic very variable and with bursty arrivals. In order to analyze the behavior of the link, the MMPP/M/1 queue model is used. To evaluate the viability of the model, comparative studies were made with results of the ns-2 simulator.

Abstract (sommario):
Information Technology (IT) Project Management methodologies are numerous, often varying from organization to organization, and sometimes from project to project within the same organization. Although project type and scope can be a powerful indicator of what methodologies may work best for a given project, choosing which methodology to use can be daunting for project teams. At times, even after due diligence has been practiced to identify the management options available for a given project, there may not be a perfect fit. At such times, or when a formal methodology does not exist in an organization or project management office, the best approach for a project may be to utilize a collective of “best practices,” instead of a concrete methodology. When tasked with the IT Project Management of the new Gary Ransdell Hall on WKU’s main campus, the IT Project Manager (PM) did not have a tried-and-true methodology to use for managing the project. As a result, the IT PM and project team chose to research best practices, as reflected in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), to formulate a project plan that would maximize efficiency while protecting the triple constraints. Early in this paper, the author outlines assumptions, constraints, and risks that faced the IT team throughout the project cycle. Afterwards, the resulting methods and procedures used to manage the IT scope for the project are discussed, with figures included for reference. Next, a brief project summary is included to summarize the results of the project, with performance and scope metrics and limited end-user feedback. Finally, the lessons learned section outlines changes that have been implemented since project completion, as part of a continuous improvement effort by the WKU IT Division.

Abstract: In this work the performance of advanced optical networks was investigated through computational simulations using optical packet switching (OPS) technology, with mesh and ring topologies. Routing in the optical nodes is carried out without electro-optical conversion of the optical packets and buffering is not used on the optical layer. The analyses are based on the network parameters capacity, throughput, average number of hops, packet loss fraction; an additional performance factor is introduced in this work. New network and node configurations are proposed and analyzed, and it was verified that they perform better than traditional topologies. It was verified that the application of electronic buffer on end-client input and output interfaces (ingress/egress of the optical network) practically eliminate optical packet loss, which mostly occur at input to the optical layer. In order to subsidize the network protection planning, analyses of the impact of link and node failure in the various architectures was studied. The mesh network obtained the best results in all situations. A network model adopted for IP traffic was also evaluated in order to consider the adequacy of our models to this traffic and the convergence of fiber networks and wireless networks (wireless-fiber). Important conclusions are that the models are simple and perform very well under various conditions, and that the degree of interconnection of the nodes is more relevant for capacity and performance than just the number of network nodes. Actually in some cases it is better to increase connectivity than number of nodes. Finally, this work does not analyze the physical limitations of transmission because it focuses on metropolitan access networks, with optical packets having a limited number of hops and never exceeding distances greater than 60 or 70 km

Abstract (sommario):
Data interoperability between computer-aided design (CAD) systems remains a major obstacle in the information integration and exchange in a collaborative engineering environment. The standards for CAD data exchange have remained largely restricted to geometric representations, causing the design intent portrayed through construction history, features, parameters, and constraints to be discarded in the exchange process. In this thesis, an ontology-based framework is proposed to allow for the full exchange of semantic feature data. A hybrid ontology approach is proposed, where a shared base ontology is used to convey the concepts that are common amongst different CAD systems, while local ontologies are used to represent the feature libraries of individual CAD systems as combinations of these shared concepts. A three-branch CAD feature model is constructed to reduce ambiguity in the construction of local ontology feature data. Boundary representation (B-Rep) data corresponding to the output of the feature operation is incorporated into the feature data to enhance data exchange. The Ontology Web Language (OWL) is used to construct a shared base ontology and a small feature library, which allows the use of existing ontology reasoning tools to infer new relationships and information between heterogeneous data. A combination of OWL and SWRL (Semantic Web Rule Language) rules are developed to allow a feature from an arbitrary source system expressed via the shared base ontology to be automatically classified and translated into the target system. These rules relate input parameters and reference types to expected B-Rep objects, allowing classification even when feature definitions vary or when little is known about the source system. In cases when the source system is well known, this approach also permits direct translation rules to be implemented. With such a flexible framework, a neutral feature exchange format could be developed.

Abstract: The streaming video transmission on Wireless networks is concerned in the research due to the large increase in the use of such networks in the last decade. Broadband access for these networks is made efficiently, quickly and with low implementation and maintenance costs of the network. The motivation for developing this research is to use these networks and IPTV network to promote interactivity and a return channel for digital television system, currently being implemented in Brazil. The return channel is important for the Digital TV system, because one of the goals is to provide interactivity for the users. This should be done in a simple, low cost way and with technology compatible in the region of the user. The simulation deals with a unicast transmission system which is similar to a local and dedicated interactivity. The user transmits all the contents at once. The data transmitted by a service provider are stored on set-top box and are modified only in case of new data flow, when there are updates or access to new area of services.
Abstract: Given the bandwidth currently available, the protocol (IP) used to transmit most Internet traffic, the quantity of traffic produced and its QoS requirements, Traffic Engineering (TE) has become an increasingly important component of communications networks. IETF's standard for forwarding/routing, which is entitled Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), presents important solutions in this scenario playing a major role in more sophisticated TE methodologies. This work presents a generic methodology for TE and a proposal for a Platform for Experiments with MPLS (PLEX MPLS) which allows the user to define, execute and analyze Traffic Engineering configurations with MPLS in an IP network. The main goals of PLEX MPLS are: . Study of the M PLS technology and support of other ongoing works with M PLS in the DCA . Traffic Engineering experiments with MPLS: validation of the related concepts and technologies . Support of didactic experiments in academic disciplines. The main concepts of MPLS and TE are presented as reference, as well as a brief description of NIST Switch, the MPLS software chosen for the PLEX MPLS implementation. The analysis, project and implementation of PLEX MPLS are presented, since are significant part of the developed work. PLEX not only uses, but also extends NIST Switch functionalities to offer a more complete and efficient TE scheme. In the analysis phase the main requirements for the PLEX implementation are specified, following a well-known Software Engineering methodology. The solutions found for the problems identified in the analysis phase are presented in the project phase alongside with a specification of the components that will be implemented. In the next phase, the implementation of PLEX is discussed focusing on the most important characteristics of PLEX components and justifying the implementation ecisions. In order to validate PLEX implementation and its proposal, some experiments were made in a test network with reallive traffic. These experiments are described and its results analyzed. The results obtained clearly indicate the importance and utility of TE schemes based on MPLS. Also an interesting TE methodology compiled from several proposals is presented. Finally, possible improvements and future work on PLEX MPLS are indicated.

Abstract (sommario):
“In an ill-structured domain you cannot, by definition, have a pre-compiled schema in your mind for every circumstance and context you may find ... you must be able to flexibly select and arrange knowledge sources to most efficaciously pursue the needs of a given situation.” [57]
In order to interact and collaborate effectively, agents, whether human or software, must be able to communicate through common understandings and compatible conceptualisations. Ontological differences that occur either from pre-existing assumptions or as side-effects of the process of specification are a fundamental obstacle that must be overcome before communication can occur. Similarly, the integration of information from heterogeneous sources is an unsolved problem. Efforts have been made to assist integration, through both methods and mechanisms, but automated integration remains an unachieved goal. Communication and information integration are problems of meaning and interaction, or semantic interoperability. This thesis contributes to the study of semantic interoperability by identifying, developing and evaluating three approaches to the integration of information. These approaches have in common that they are lightweight in nature, pragmatic in philosophy and general in application.
The first work presented is an effort to integrate a massive, formal ontology and knowledge-base with semi-structured, informal heterogeneous information sources via a heuristic-driven, adaptable information agent. The goal of the work was to demonstrate a process by which task-specific knowledge can be identified and incorporated into the massive knowledge-base in such a way that it can be generally re-used. The practical outcome of this effort was a framework that illustrates a feasible approach to providing the massive knowledge-base with an ontologically-sound mechanism for automatically generating task-specific information agents to dynamically retrieve information from semi-structured information sources without requiring machine-readable meta-data.
The second work presented is based on reviving a previously published and neglected algorithm for inferring semantic correspondences between fields of tables from heterogeneous information sources. An adapted form of the algorithm is presented and evaluated on relatively simple and consistent data collected from web services in order to verify the original results, and then on poorly-structured and messy data collected from web sites in order to explore the limits of the algorithm. The results are presented via standard measures and are accompanied by detailed discussions on the nature of the data encountered and an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the algorithm and the ways in which it complements other approaches that have been proposed.
Acknowledging the cost and difficulty of integrating semantically incompatible software systems and information sources, the third work presented is a proposal and a working prototype for a web site to facilitate the resolving of semantic incompatibilities between software systems prior to deployment, based on the commonly-accepted software engineering principle that the cost of correcting faults increases exponentially as projects progress from phase to phase, with post-deployment corrections being significantly more costly than those performed earlier in a project’s life. The barriers to collaboration in software development are identified and steps taken to overcome them. The system presented draws on the recent collaborative successes of social and collaborative on-line projects such as SourceForge, Del.icio.us, digg and Wikipedia and a variety of techniques for ontology reconciliation to provide an environment in which data definitions can be shared, browsed and compared, with recommendations automatically presented to encourage developers to adopt data definitions compatible with previously developed systems.
In addition to the experimental works presented, this thesis contributes reflections on the origins of semantic incompatibility with a particular focus on interaction between software systems, and between software systems and their users, as well as detailed analysis of the existing body of research into methods and techniques for overcoming these problems.
