Abstract (sommario):
Just as the provision of goods in the physical world necessitates the involvement of numerous entities that act as intermediaries, the internet supply chain involves several online intermediaries that provide the infrastructure via which customers can exchange information. These can include but are not limited to, telecom and internet service providers, web hosting, Internet search engines, social networking, instant messaging, and so on. It is now impossible to consider life without the internet. The internet, which connects billions of people globally, is a key pillar of the modern information society for creating and trading material. The way we connect and share information has changed, with many negative consequences, and it's not every day that intermediaries are neutral. The judicial process has continued to shape and solidify legislation relating to intermediaries over the years. In India section 79, of the Information technology Act, 2000 governs intermediaries (service providers), under this law no person providing any service as a network service provider shall be liable, rules or regulations made thereunder for any third-party information or data made available by him if he proves that the offense or contravention was committed without his knowledge or that he had exercised all due diligence to prevent the commission of such offense or contravention(the information technology act, 2000, 2000). In 2017, UNESCO published the book “Fostering Freedom Online: The Role of Internet Intermediaries”. It aimed to shed light on how internet intermediaries both foster and restrict freedom of expression across a range of jurisdictions, circumstances, technologies, and business models. (MacKinnon Rebecca et al., 2015). In Ghana, the (Data Protection Act, 2012) was borne by the constitution to protect the privacy of the individual and personal data by regulating the processing of personal information, providing the process to obtain, hold, use or disclose personal information, and for related matters. Serving as a check to these internet intermediaries. In the (electronic transactions act, 2008 (ACT 772)), section 90 is dedicated to the Liability of service providers and intermediaries. “Liability” means that intermediaries must prevent the occurrence of unlawful or harmful activity by users of their services. Failure to do so may result in legal orders compelling the intermediary to act or expose the intermediary to civil or criminal legal action (APC). Abstract (sommario):
As computing and Internet connections become general-purpose technologies and services aimed at broad global markets, questions arise about the effectiveness of such markets in terms of public welfare, the participation of differentiated service providers and end-users. Motorola’s Iridium Global Communications project was completed in the 1990s due to similar issues, reaching the goal of technological connectivity for the first time. As Internet services are characterized by high innovation, differentiation and dynamism, they can use well-known models of differentiated products. However, the demand functions in such models are hyperbolic rather than linear. In addition, such models are stochastic and include providers with different ways of competing. In the Internet ecosystem, the links between Internet service providers (ISPs) as telecommunications operators and content service providers are important, especially high-bandwidth video content providers. As increasing bandwidth requires new investments in network capacity, both video content providers and ISPs need to be motivated to do so. In order to analyze the relationships between Internet service providers and content providers in the Internet ecosystem, computable models, based on the construction of payoff functions for all the participants in the ecosystem, are suggested. The introduction of paid content browsing will motivate Internet service providers to invest in increasing the capacity of the global network, which has a trend of exponential growth. At the same time, such a browsing will violate the principles of net neutrality, which provides grounds for the development of new tasks to minimize the violations of net neutrality and maximize the social welfare of the Internet ecosystem. The models point to the importance of the efficiency of Internet service providers, the predictability of demand and the high price elasticity of innovative services.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis article examines the role of internet service providers (ISPs) as guardians of personal information and protectors of privacy, with a particular focus on how telecom companies in Canada have historically negotiated these responsibilities. Communications intermediaries have long been expected to act as privacy custodians by their users, while simultaneously being subject to pressures to collect, utilize, and disclose personal information. As service providers gain custody over increasing volumes of highly-sensitive information, their importance as privacy custodians has been brought into starker relief and explicitly recognized as a core responsibility. Some ISPs have adopted a more positive orientation to this responsibility, actively taking steps to advance it, rather that treating privacy protection as a set of limitations on conduct. However, commitments to privacy stewardship are often neutralized through contradictory legal obligations (such as mandated surveillance access) and are recurrently threatened by commercial pressures to monetize personal information.

Abstract (sommario):
Internet service providers (ISPs) have a variety of quality attributes that determine their attractiveness for data transmission, ranging from quality-of-service metrics such as jitter to security properties such as the presence of DDoS defense systems. ISPs should optimize these attributes in line with their profit objective, i.e., maximize revenue from attracted traffic while minimizing attribute-related cost, all in the context of alternative offers by competing ISPs. However, this attribute optimization is difficult not least because many aspects of ISP competition are barely understood on a systematic level, e.g., the multi-dimensional and cost-driving nature of path quality, and the distributed decision making of ISPs on the same path. In this paper, we improve this understanding by analyzing how ISP competition affects path quality and ISP profits. To that end, we develop a game-theoretic model in which ISPs (i) affect path quality via multiple attributes that entail costs, (ii) are on paths together with other selfish ISPs, and (iii) are in competition with alternative paths when attracting traffic. The model enables an extensive theoretical analysis, surprisingly showing that competition can have both positive and negative effects on path quality and ISP profits, depending on the network topology and the cost structure of ISPs. However, a large-scale simulation, which draws on real-world data to instantiate the model, shows that the positive effects will likely prevail in practice: If the number of selectable paths towards any destination increases from 1 to 5, the prevalence of quality attributes increases by at least 50%, while 75% of ISPs improve their profit.

Abstract (sommario):
Internet is no longer a luxury or an optional service. Most of the people nowadays require some sort of internet connection to be able to carry out daily activities and work. Egypt has been investing in upgrading the internet infrastructure with major improvements to the speed and stability of the internet connections. Recently, all the major internet service providers in Egypt introduced plans with faster speeds, more traffic cap, and cheaper prices, but the throttling speeds have been sharply decreased. However, there is some sort of dissatisfaction of the service that is common among different users around. The aim of this research is to assess the performance of the four major internet service providers in Egypt. There is little research on the quality of the internet service providers in Egypt from the perspective of customers, whether residential or commercial customers. In this research, a model is proposed to find the service factors that matter the most to the customers in Egypt. A questionnaire is developed based on the proposed model. The questionnaire is first distributed on a pilot sample of diverse customers to evaluate whether it was easily understood, or not, and to ensure that appropriate answers were received. The questionnaire is then distributed among a large number of commercial and residential customers. The performance of the major Internet Service Providers is assessed and the room for improvement is identified. The paper results include analysis of the factors that contribute the most to the customer satisfaction in Egypt and the priorities of the performance from the customer perspective so that the companies should work on.

The intent of the essay is to verify if the Proposal on a Single Market For Digital Services (Digital Services Act), in the part where it aims to define the provider’s liability for illegal activity or illegal content stored at the request of a recipient of the hosting service, ends up providing greater protection for the passive provider than the Electronic Commerce Directive. It is also the intent to examine to what extent the actual increased protection of the passive provider is compensated for by greater rigor in ruling out the possibility of the providers playing an active role in hosting.

Abstract (sommario):
Internet service providing industry is considered a mainstay for all types of organizations all over the world. In order to be competitive, internet service providers (ISPs) need to realize that all service quality attributes do not carry the same value in customers’ eyes. Therefore, the present study proposes a rationally appealing methodological framework for prioritizing attributes of the SERVQUAL model without restricting them to their dimensions. The responses on 22 attributes of service quality collected from 401 internet users were processed through a triangulation approach comprising three ranking methods: Relative to an Identified Distribution Integral Transformation (RIDIT), Grey Relational Analysis (GRA), and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). A correlational study of these results was also computed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficient, which proved positive. The consistent outcomes reveal a definite set of users’ priorities for the quality attributes of internet services, and it denies the general thought that the rate of internet service providers is the primary concern of customers. The findings uniquely contribute by highlighting important facets of service quality from customers’ viewpoint. The study would benefit ISPs to empathize customers’ needs corresponding to essential attributes. In this way, they would be able to rationalize the budget for top-ranked features, and redesign operational strategies accordingly.

Abstract (sommario):
The Internet of Things (IoT) enables the number of connected devices to be increased rapidly based on heterogeneous technologies such as platforms, frameworks, libraries, protocols, and standard specifications. Based on the connected devices, various applications can be developed by integrating domain-specific contents using the service composition for providing improved services. The management of the information including devices, contents, and composite objects is necessary to represent the physical objects on the Internet for accessing the IoT services transparently. In this paper, we propose an integrated service composition approach based on multiple service providers to provide improved IoT services by combining various service objects in heterogeneous IoT networks. In the proposed IoT architecture, each service provider provides web services based on Representational State Transfer (REST) Application Programming Interface (API) that delivers information to the clients as well as other providers for integrating the information to provide new services. Through the REST APIs, the integration management provider combines the service result of the IoT service provider to other contents to provide improved services. Moreover, the interworking proxy is proposed to bridge heterogeneous IoT networks for enabling transparent access in the integrated services through proving protocol translating on the entry of the device networks. Therefore, the interworking proxy is deployed between the IoT service provider and device networks to enable clients to access heterogeneous IoT devices through the composited services transparently.

The competitive nature of Internet access service business drives Service Providers to find innovative revenue generators within their core competencies. Internet connection is the essential infrastructure in the current business environment. Service Providers provide the Internet connections to corporate networks. It processes network data to enable the Internet business communications and transactions. Mining the network data of a particular corporate network resulted in its business traffic profile or characteristics. Based on the discovered characteristics, this research proposes novel generic Value Added Services (VAS). The VAS becomes the innovative and competitive revenue generators. The VAS is competitive as only the Service Provider and its customer know the traffic profile. The knowledge becomes the barrier of entry for competitors. To offer the VAS, a Service Provider must build close relationship with its customer for acceptance.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – Prior research has determined that consumers are opposed to services offshoring. The purpose of this paper is to determine the likelihood that consumers would choose a domestic vs an offshore service provider if asked to pay more, wait longer, or sacrifice service quality. Design/methodology/approach – The cost, time to wait, and quality of services provided (for two different services: taxes and customer service) were varied to determine respondent likelihood to choose a domestic as opposed to an offshore service provider when asked to pay more, wait longer, or sacrifice the quality of the service in return for access to a domestic service provider. Data were collected via survey research, using an internet panel. Findings – Results of repeated measures analysis indicated that customer loyalty to the domestic service provider significantly decreased as the cost or time to interact with a domestic service provider increased or the quality of service provided by the offshore service provider increased. Research limitations/implications – The research results signify that while customers, in general, may be opposed to services offshoring, they will “defect” or show less loyalty to the domestic service provider when asked to sacrifice time or money for that access. Respondents were asked to react to each trade-off as individual factors. Future research might combine these factors to determine interrelated tradeoffs. Practical implications – The research results signify that while customers, in general, may be opposed to services offshoring, they will “defect” or show less loyalty to the domestic service provider when asked to sacrifice time or money for that access. Originality/value – The paper extends research with regard to consumer reaction to service offshoring and provides insight into the trade-offs consumers might be willing to incur in return for access to domestic service providers. The paper is of value to practitioners and academic researchers.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This article describes comparative internet studies as a useful paradigm through which to study Asian internet(s). It defines comparative internet studies as the systemic comparison of how material and immaterial internet infrastructure developed historically in different countries. This approach has the explicit aim of theoretical intervention and is located at the intersection of three strands of literature: internet studies, infrastructure studies, and regionality. This article brings together these three bodies of literature to illuminate areas of complementarity and cross-semination and to demonstrate how they contribute to a comparative internet studies project that is useful for grappling with Asian internet(s). Then, to illustrate how a comparative internet studies project can be realized, it draws on the author’s prior work on two internet service provider (ISP) projects: i-mode in Japan and Monternet in China.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis paper examines the role of Internet Service Providers as bridges and intermediaries between private persons, organizations even government arms and the Internet and the liabilities placed on them by the law with regard to wrongful acts of their subscribers or clients under the laws of Nigeria. It is common knowledge that actions againstISPs are commonest with defamation and infringement of copyright. The legal framework in theUSand the UKare examined to determine if there are lessons to learn for Nigeria. The Nigerian legal framework also places some responsibilities on ISPs with regard to crime prevention and prosecution. This is because private rights are not yet much of an issue in the Nigerian cyberspace. The paper points out that much of the regulation governingISPs liability in respect of civil matters do not have legislative power but are mere guidelines and suggests that theUSand UKpatterns have a lot to offer Nigeria.

Abstract (sommario):
The Internet provides digital services that play an important role in society and on which some entrepreneurs may depend. Cybersecurity is important for digital service providers, not only in terms of technical or organisational aspects, but also legal aspects, because some digital service providers may still be affected by additional legal obligations. This article presents a comparative analysis of the provisions concerning digital services and cybersecurity under the NIS Directive and its implementing acts in the Republic of Malta and the Republic of Poland. The NIS Directive addresses the provisions of only three types of digital services - i.e. the online marketplace, internet search engine and cloud computing services. A digital service provider is a legal entity that is subject to the provisions of a given national legal act implementing the NIS Directive under certain conditions. There are some differences in the acts analysed in this article, particularly in terms of legal obligations or financial penalties.

It also interrogated the various instances where third party use of social media might affect ISP liability. This paper further explored the judicial and legal framework of some jurisdictions to see how they view the liabilities of internet service providers. The paper concluded that internet service providers should be held accountable for the content that is published on their platforms as it affects greatly the lives of concerned users offline.
