Abstract (sommario):
Literary scholars have traditionally understood landscapes, whether natural or manmade, as metaphors for humanity instead of concrete settings for people's actions. This book accepts the natural world as such by investigating how Anglo-Saxons interacted with and conceived of their lived environments. Examining Old English poems, such as Beowulf and Judith, as well as descriptions of natural events from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and other documentary texts, Heide Estes shows that Anglo-Saxon ideologies which view nature as diametrically opposed to humans, and the natural world as designed for human use, have become deeply embedded in our cultural heritage, language, and more.

Abstract (sommario):
The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries saw a marked increase in the availability of elementary and grammar education in Europe. In France, that rise took the form of a unique blend of trends also seen elsewhere in Europe, ranging from Church-dominated schools to independent schools and communal groups of teachers. Lyon, long a crossroad of ideas from north and south, was home to a particularly interesting blend of approaches, and in this book Sarah Lynch offers a close analysis of the educational landscape of the city, showing how schools and teachers were organised and how they interacted with each other and with ecclesiastical and municipal authorities.

Abstract (sommario):
In Art and Politics, Segal explores the collision of politics and art in seven enticing essays. The book explores the position of art and artists under a number of different political regimes of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, traveling around the world to consider how art and politics have interacted and influenced each other in different conditions. Joes Segal takes you on a journey to the Third Reich, where Emil Nolde supported the regime while being called degenerate; shows us Diego Rivera creating Marxist murals in Mexico and the United States for anti-Marxist governments and clients; ties Jackson Pollock's drip paintings in their Cold War context to both the FBI and the CIA; and considers the countless images of Mao Zedong in China as unlikely witnesses of radical political change.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
In an effort to fight climate change, many cities try to boost their cycling levels. They often look towards the Dutch for guidance. However, historians have only begun to uncover how and why the Netherlands became the premier cycling country of the world. Why were Dutch cyclists so successful in their fight for a place on the road? Cycling Pathways: The Politics and Governance of Dutch Cycling Infrastructure, 1920-2020 explores the long political struggle that culminated in today’s high cycling levels. Delving into the archives, it uncovers the important role of social movements and shows in detail how these interacted with national, provincial, and urban engineers and policymakers to govern the distribution of road space and construction of cycling infrastructure. It discusses a wide range of topics, ranging from activists to engineering committees, from urban commuters to recreational cyclists and from the early 1900s to today in order to uncover the long and all-but-forgotten history of Dutch cycling governance.

Abstract (sommario):
The contributions presented at the study day held in Empoli in May 2006 – now collected in book form – are intended to provide a contribution to the debate on the relations between the teaching of history of architecture, design and historiography. Each essay addresses a specific issue, proposing an analysis and valorisation of the sources (documents, images, diaries etc.) and the resources available for research, representation and design. Taken as a whole, the collective work aims at defining a history of architecture focused on a knowledge and understanding of how, at different times and in different places, man has interacted with the geographical or environmental context to organise the physical space. A history of architecture in seamless relation with that of the city and the territory. A history of architecture that posits itself as an essential component in the design culture of architects and town planners, fostering a mode of intervention generated by a profound knowledge of the complex realities in which it takes shape.

Abstract (sommario):
This book examines the scholarly work of Terence Grieder, an early pre-Columbian art historian of wide-ranging interests and often provocative stances. Through a series of topical essays focused a variety of Pre-Columbian art historical topics, former students, professional colleagues, and other intellectual descendants discuss his major ideas through examples drawn from their own work. The work of those he mentored and interacted with is, in the end, the most important testament to his continuing influence in the field.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter explores the relationships between refugee camps and the localities around them. Camps varied widely in their openness to the surrounding community, and how positively or negatively this openness was perceived. This chapter traces the interactions between refugees and local Britons. Many displaced or homeless Britons lived in refugee camps, not only giving aid, but also receiving it. Refugees and citizens interacted in camps not only as tragic victims and heroic saviors. Rather, they were twinned populations in need. This chapter also considers how communities of color reacted to refugees, and how migrants and refugees crafted complicated ties of mutual responsibility.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter studies the diverse and often contradictory trajectories of Hellenism at the great caravan city of Tadmor-Palmyra in the heart of the Syrian steppe and at the small town of Dura-Europos on the Middle Euphrates. Building on the limited evidence for the two local cultures in the pre-Roman period, the chapter explores the way in which the relation between the two sites developed. Focus is not only on the various kinds of Greek culture at stake, but also on the diverse ways in which these different forms of Greek culture interacted with the different indigenous cultural elements.

Abstract (sommario):
For Anglicans there has never been a distinct division between public and private, political and personal, when it comes to matters of faith and their application in Christian ethics. This chapter considers Anglicanism’s engagement with politics. It looks at how Anglicans have addressed issues of justice, righteousness, and redemption from the ethics of individual choice through to national and international politics and economics. This chapter analyses the history of Anglican approaches to politics by unpicking scripture. It discusses how Anglicanism has interacted with politics by looking at churches and nations, the evolution of the Anglican Communion’s institutional life, and contemporary culture.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the role of the imperialism of nation-states in the Cold War. It suggests that the Cold War rivalry provided the “frame of reference” in which the historical forces of imperialism and nationalism interacted with developments such as decolonization, multiculturalism, and new ideologies and modes of identity formation. The chapter also argues that while the equilibrium of Cold War rivalry generated an entrenched political and ideological hegemony limiting the realization of political, economic, and imaginative possibilities in much of the world, the developing world represented significant weak links and played an equally important role in its collapse.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter analyzes the indirect elections of U.S. senators in state legislatures within a broader theoretical framework of how parties interact with institutional and electoral settings to affect electoral and policy outcomes. It identifies key participants in Senate campaigns during this period—candidates for U.S. Senate, business interests, political party organizations, and state legislators—and constructs a model for how these stakeholders interacted with each other within the structure of legislative choice for U.S. senator along four dimensions—candidate identification, candidate nomination, election criteria, and system responsiveness. It also discusses how an anticipated indirect Senate election might have affected voter turnout in the preceding state legislative election.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter presents a case study of the archaeology of a mid-nineteenth century school in Cambridge (England), placing the features associated with the school and the material associated with them in the wider context of children’s material culture, education, and the rapidly changing nature of nineteenth century childhood, considering the material culture that children interacted with in its totality, not just child-specific forms. This allows a nuanced interpretation of the material; revealing tensions between different ideas, such as gentility and frugality, plus the existence of multiple narratives, with various members of a household viewing items of material culture in distinct ways, and different assemblages revealing disparate materialities.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses the influence of the early church and the consensus of the Reformed churches upon the identity of the Church of England. It shows that these two sources of identity have been set against each other in modern scholarship rather than investigated to see how they interacted. This chapter first notes the perseverance of the saints as the most distinctive doctrine for the Reformed tradition and how Augustine was esteemed as the preeminent church father. Then the chapter proposes to survey several debates involving competing readings of Augustine on perseverance in order to see what contributions they make to the discussion on the identity of the Church of England.

Abstract (sommario):
Examining the stories of diverse Christians in Shanghai, this book uses the city as a model to highlight how a minority religion in a city has interacted with other religions as well as social, cultural, political, and economic changes. Susangeline Y. Patrick illustrates how the history of Shanghai Christians sheds light on why and how Christians have accommodated social and political changes, and gives valuable insights into multiculturalism, globalization, sinicization, and ecclesiology. The interreligious dialogues between Shanghai Christians and other traditions such as Buddhism, Daoism, Confucianism, Islam, and Judaism throughout history provide worthy reflections on the roles of Christians in a multi-religious space.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter argues that indigenous and colonial ‘laws’ were made and adapted in and through entanglements of peoples and dynamic political-normative regimes or epistemic communities. These underlying complexities might be obscured in extant anglophone high-level treatises or colonial judicial decisions, let alone indigenous participation in introduced colonial forums, but remain important to appreciate. In approaching the multiple ‘legalities’ in play one needs to remain conscious of how pre-existing communities interacted dynamically with strangers from across the seas. In examining these points the chapter considers several broad, intermingling phenomena: firstly, key jurisdictional tensions (including those associated with notions of ‘protection’); secondly, the evolution of strategies for governing or administering territory; and, thirdly, the regulation of proprietary interests.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter picks up from the last, presenting the German Federal Constitutional Court’s expansive horizontal application of rights, as first announced in the landmark Lüth decision of 1958, as a continuation of its efforts to assert itself in a competitive institutional environment. In time, the Court’s horizontal rights jurisprudence went further, contributing to a constitutional cascade. Subsequent decisions drove constitutional norms deeper and deeper into ordinary law, bringing civil courts and legislatures under the tutelage of the Court and also engaging them as co-venturers in the project of elaborating constitutional meaning. The chapter explores the different ways the Court interacted with lawmakers and lower courts in the contexts of free speech, antidiscrimination law, and family law.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter introduces a provincial-level adaptation of my theory of the protest state. In addition to its high levels of protest activity, Argentina is a federal system where incidences of protest participation have occurred at uneven rates, making it an excellent case for exploring variation in rates of contention across provincial contexts. Focusing on the provinces of Buenos Aires, Mendoza, and San Luis—where I draw on dozens of interviews with citizen activists, movement organizers, and politicians conducted in 2013 with support from the National Science Foundation—I utilize the comparative method to examine how distinct institutional characteristics of each province have interacted with citizen engagement to produce different outcomes in terms of protest.

Abstract (sommario):
While many scholars and commentators have written about the Japanese American incarceration, few have adopted an explicit environmental focus. The introduction explains why using an environmental lens is important to understanding this notorious episode in US history. Environmental history examines how the environment influenced humans and how humans interacted with and transformed the natural world. Nature Behind Barbed Wire applies this approach and demonstrates that the Japanese American incarceration was an environmental process that was connected to the lands and waters of the Pacific Coast and the camps in the inland American West. The introduction also suggests that the incarceration was part of a longer history of Japanese American exclusion and discrimination.

The History and Culture of a People highlights the enormous contributions of Japanese Americans in history, civil rights, politics, economic development, arts, literature, film, popular culture, sports, and religious landscapes. It not only provides context to important events in Japanese American history and in-depth information about the lives and backgrounds of well-known Japanese Americans, but also captures the essence of everyday life for Japanese Americans as they have adjusted their identities, established communities, and interacted with other ethnic groups. This innovative volume will become the standard resource for exploring why the Japanese came to America more than 130 years ago, where they settled, and what experiences played a role in forming the distinctive Japanese American identity.

Abstract (sommario):
This book provides readers with a unique understanding of the ways in which Aboriginal people interacted with their environment in the past at one particular location in western New South Wales. It also provides a statement showing how geoarchaeology should be conducted in a wide range of locations throughout Australia. One of the key difficulties faced by all those interested in the interaction between humans and their environment in the past is the complex array of processes acting over different spatial and temporal scales. The authors take account of this complexity by integrating three key areas of study – geomorphology, geochronology and archaeology – applied at a landscape scale, with the intention of understanding the record of how Australian Aboriginal people interacted with the environment through time and across space. This analysis is based on the results of archaeological research conducted at the University of New South Wales Fowlers Gap Arid Zone Research Station between 1999 and 2002 as part of the Western New South Wales Archaeology Program. The interdisciplinary geoarchaeological program was targeted at expanding the potential offered by archaeological deposits in western New South Wales, Australia. The book contains six chapters: the first two introduce the study area, then three data analysis chapters deal in turn with the geomorphology, geochronology and archaeology of Fowlers Gap Station. A final chapter considers the results in relation to the history of Aboriginal occupation of Fowlers Gap Station, as well as the insights they provide into Aboriginal ways of life more generally. Analyses are well illustrated through the tabulation of results and the use of figures created through Geographic Information System software. Abstract (sommario):
Disgrace was in many ways synonymous with the court and the lives and careers of ministers and courtiers. Yet it should not be seen as separate from the French population as a whole. This chapter uses examples of individual or corporate disgrace to explore how the wider public interacted with high politics, looking at the role of, amongst others, caricature, ballads, jokes, placards, and engravings as well as riots and popular rituals as expressions of opinion on the affairs of the day. Despite its pretensions to absolute authority, the crown was sensitive to public opinion and it too was anxious to present its version of events in what was a much livelier and vibrant political culture than the theoreticians of absolute monarchy might lead us to believe.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter explores the basis for the “disconnect” between the church and the street and how Juliani's work brings them together. Juliani, this chapter argues, provides an important bridge for the church and the street, using music that focuses on social issues to bring people who care about them in for a closer look at his Christian message embedded in his songs. And, in looking beyond the musician to the context within which he performs, this chapter also considers the ways that Christianity in Kenya found its feet in different cultural communities, as well as how the culture of the missionaries who pioneered Christianity in Kenya interacted with the local cultures of the communities they converted, and how these influences have endured or changed over time.

Abstract (sommario):
Spanish-Mexican and Native/indigenous women of the borderland territories that became the US West created lives circumscribed by conquest, resistance, and decolonization. Their ability to survive was based on defying stereotypes about who they were, accessing structures, building resources to circumvent hostility and violence, and resisting inequities by sustaining a presence in the written record that slowly is being recovered. White settler women enabled Manifest Destiny, but a few demonstrated degrees of cultural understanding despite the stringent racialism and distrust that their migration originally engendered. Women of color and Euro-American women interacted both violently and peacefully. Key to knowing their stories, particularly of poor or non-English speaking women, is the difficult work of archival recovery and discovery.

Abstract (sommario):
This article argues that historians ought to have two main goals: reconstructing the past in a way that demonstrates how those who lived life in times before our own understood and interacted with the world that they inhabited and ascribing meaning to these past experiences so that they are relevant to those in the present. Atlantic history, at least for the last few decades, has held out tremendous potential for modern world historians. This article describes expanding time and integrating space by considering the Atlantic world as a single entity from the time that the four continents bordering the Atlantic Ocean became linked though exploration. It also discusses community, migration, and the need for political economy; and globalizing Atlantic history.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter begins with an overview of Oregon and then focuses upon eastern Oregon, where the Chinese played a major role in mining until the turn of the twentieth century. From the outset the Chinese encountered difficulties in living and working in Oregon. As they tried to mine in Oregon the Chinese miners had to cope with EuroAmerican racism and Native American attacks. Yet the Chinese eventually established communities in the rugged terrain of eastern Oregon where some of their leaders interacted with the local population who were also struggling to survive. Some of the miners and merchants were successful while others struggled. Moreover, Chinese merchants became involved in the formation of Chinese mining companies, and it appears that many were successful.
