Abstract (sommario):
Research into the sociology of intellectual life reveals numerous appeals to the public conscience of intellectuals. The way in which concepts such as ‘the public intellectual’ or ‘intellectual life’ are discussed, however, conceals a long history of biased thinking about thinking as an elite endeavour with prohibitive requirements for entry. This article argues that this tendency prioritizes the intellectual realm over the public sphere, and betrays any claims to public relevance unless a broader definition of what counts as intellectual life is introduced. By calling for a shift from the notion of public intellectuals to Jane Jacobs’ (1961) idea of the ‘public character’, a publicly situated and affect-laden conception of intellectual life is articulated with the aim of redefining intellectual life as an ordinary, collective pursuit, rather than the prerogative of a few extraordinary individuals, as well as restoring the role of the senses in theoretical discussions on the life of the mind. The theoretical scope of this article therefore is to cast the net wider in the search for meanings of what public intellectual life is, can or may be in a larger context than ‘intellectualist’ discussions currently allow.

Abstract (sommario):
This article initiates the discussion of intellectual women’s experiences of the Second World War in Croatia/Yugoslavia with the introduction of the recently discovered war diaries of Jewish intellectual Ina Juhn Broda (1899–1983) and journalist Vinka Bulić (1884–1965), along with the war diary of the nurse Lujza Janović Wagner (1907–1945). These scattered examples of intellectual women’s life-writing and their role in women’s transition from one to another totalitarian regime lack a thorough analysis and theoretical interpretation. This article therefore analyses how World War II represented a major shift in women’s rethinking of war and peace, but also of the Yugoslav future as a socialist project. It also discusses the very nature of the genre and sees the act of writing (about) oneself as a substitution for abruptly discontinued intellectual activity and the public presence of these women intellectuals.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis will argue that Catherine Helen Spence, a writer, preacher and reformer who migrated from Scotland to Australia in 1839, performed the role of a public intellectual in Australia similar to that played by a number of women of letters in Victorian England. While her ideas were strongly influenced by important British and European nineteenth-century intellectual figures and movements, as well as by Enlightenment thought, her work also reflects the different socio-political, historical and cultural environment of Australia. These connections and influences can be seen in her engagement with what were some of the "big ideas" of the nineteenth century, including feminism, socialism, religious scepticism, utopianism and the value of progress. In arguing that Spence was a public intellectual, I will consider the ways in which she used the literary genres of fiction and journalism, as well as her sermons, to try to help her fellow citizens make sense of the world, attempting to organise and articulate some of the significant ideas affecting the political, social and cultural climates in which they lived. Through the exploration of Spence's intellectual work, I will show how she can be regarded as making a significant contribution to nineteenth-century Australian intellectual life, one that has been under-recognised and under-valued.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract When the People's Republic of China (PRC) was founded in 1949, social structure had changed dramatically and the class identity of intellectual groups was the first to be affected severely. The remodeling of class identity and reconstruction of discourse system of the intellectuals needed to be addressed as quickly as possible so as to serve the new regime. And the event that the elite liberal intellectuals in colleges and universities boycotted the adjustment on faculty policies of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) had triggered the first large-scale ideological transforming movement after the foundation of PRC. `New' discourse mode constructed by Mao Tsetung was infused into transformers' minds being transformed in this movement, and finally the `red' revolutionary knowledge discourse had totally replaced the traditional knowledge discourse of intellectuals in colleges and universities. From the research perspectives of political communication and discourse analysis, this thesis places this Ideological Transforming Movement of Chinese Intellectuals during 1951 to 1952 into a political and cultural background of the era; manifests the innovation, overlapping and confrontation between the `new' discourse constructed by Mao Tsetung and the traditional discourse of the Chinese traditional intellectuals and the contemporary intellectuals coming into being from in the May 4th Movement; and analyses the application of `new' discourse in intellectual groups in the ideological transforming movement, reveals the discourse propagation tools and power exertion strategies in the ideological transforming movement in the new China under Mao's dominion. It is considered in this thesis that Mao took the `class' as a core discourse, populism and revolutionary narration as contents, redefined `knowledge' and `intellectual', and thus created a new set of `red' knowledge discourse and ideology system. In the intellectual ideological transforming movement, this new, systematic and coverall explanation system utilized `class' to convert the power status between elite intellectuals and people at the bottom of the society, as well as linked it with morality to stimulate the intellectuals' sense of `original sin'. Meanwhile, with the upgrading `stigmatization' and language violence as well as the idolization of `prophet language' of Mao Tsetung in the mass movement after 1949, the elite intellectuals finally discarded the previous knowledge discourse and embrace the `red' current discourse. However, the discourse system constructed by Mao based on the basis of `expressive reality' which broke away from social reality, therefore, as Mao Tsetung, the authority core of the discourse system, disappeared, the overall discourse system constructed by him also collapsed. Nevertheless, the ideological reforming movement in the 1950s exposed a discourse predicament that intellectual elites who advocated `independent thinking and spirit freedom' were jointly facing, which also persists with the Chinese intellectuals nowadays.

Green, Ann M. "The quality of life of adults with intellectual disabilities". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29128.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The replacement of institutional care for people with intellectual disabilities with community care and accommodation has been established social policy in many countries for a number of years. Successive studies have reported improvements on various dimensions of quality of life, immediately following community resettlement and over longer periods; however, the extent to which new service models promote lifestyles and life experiences comparable with those of the general population is less well documented. The thesis comprises four related studies which explore aspects of the quality of life of adults with intellectual disabilities in hospital and community settings in the context of recent developments in Scottish social policy; compare the life experiences of intellectually disabled adults in NHS and social care with that of adult members of the general public; and describe the adaptation and development of an international measure of quality of life (the WHOQOL) for the intellectual disability population. In pilot study one, the themes relevant for comprehensive assessment of the quality of life of adults with intellectual disabilities were generated by focus groups of clients in health and social care, staff working in this specialty, and relatives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The findings suggested that the facets of quality of life measured by the WHOQOL were relevant to adults with intellectual disabilities also, but required to be supplemented by additional themes specific to this client group. These findings informed pilot study two in which the WHOQOL-BREF (the abbreviated version of the WHOQOL-100) was customised and developed for an intellectual disability population with simplified item wording (retaining semantic equivalence), the introduction of additional items (reflecting the supplementary quality of life facets), and pictorial augmentation of item response scales; and a small field trial of the adapted WHOQOL-ID was carried out, as part of which an initial analysis of the psychometric properties of the new scale was conducted. In a subsidiary study, a survey of 51 community based social care and accommodation projects for adults with intellectual disabilities was carried out; structured interviews were conducted with care staff about the suitability and effectiveness of this accommodation; and a pilot housing fit index reflecting the match between the care needs of resident clients and the characteristics of project accommodation was developed. The findings of pilot study two underpinned refinement of the WHOQOL-ID for use in the main study, which employed a three level between-groups design to compare the quality of life of 204 community clients living in the social care projects described in the subsidiary study, 213 learning disability hospital residents (matched with the community group for gender, age, and dependency) immediately prior to resettlement as part of a hospital closure programme, and 208 members of the general public (matched with both groups for gender and age, and with the community group for locality). The data collected were used to carry out a full evaluation of the psychometric properties of the final instrument also. Significant differences found between the three groups were discussed with reference to implications for social policy and service developments in intellectual disabilities; and suggestions for future research were outlined.

Abstract (sommario):
The concept of dissident under consideration in this study reveals that political and loyal dissent, non-conformity and well-meaning criticisms of government's wrong doings, and even the quest for democracy exist in China as they do in the West. Political struggle and the leadership's eagerness to gain the support of intellectuals provided Chinese intellectuals with the opportunity to express themselves. Similarly, power struggles within the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) have also become the spawning ground for some Chinese intellectuals to become dissidents.

Dahms, Elizabeth Anne. "THE LIFE AND WORK OF GLORIA ANZALDÚA: AN INTELLECTUAL BIOGRAPHY". UKnowledge, 2012. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/hisp_etds/6.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The writings and life of Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa (1942-2004) have had an immense impact in a variety of disciplines. Her oft-cited text Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza (1987) is included in many university courses’ reading lists for its contributions to discourses of hybridity, linguistics, intersectionality and women of color feminism, among others. Unfortunately, most scholars content themselves with the intricacies of Borderlands to the neglect of her corpus of work, which includes essays, books, edited volumes, children’s literature and fiction/autohistorias. This analysis presented here wishes to expand our understandings of Anzaldúa’s work by engaging with her pre- and post-Borderlands writings in an attempt to highlight the unrecognized contributions Anzaldúa offers to feminist theory, spirituality, spiritual activism, queer theory, expansive ideas of queerness and an articulation of alternative, non-Western epistemology. This project offers close readings of published and archival Anzaldúan text and draws parallels between her life and her writing.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents a critical literature review and reports on the findings of three empirical studies, examining the relationship between life events and psychological problems in people with intellectual disabilities. An introduction is provided in Chapter 1. The critical review (Chapter 2) describes the current evidence base in relation to a critical framework that aims to establish life event exposure as a causal risk factor for psychological problems. Chapter 3 presents the results of a longitudinal study, using data from proxy informants, and begins to address the need for further longitudinal data in establishing life events as a risk factor. Chapter 4 presents the results of a self-report study of life events, psychological problems and social support, intended to establish whether valid data on life events could be obtained using self-report interviews with people with intellectual disabilities. The putative role of social support as a moderator in the relationship between life events and psychological problems is also examined. Chapter 5 presents the results of a longitudinal study of life events in children with intellectual disabilities, which begins to address the need for further studies of life events in children with intellectual disabilities, and in particular, the need for longitudinal evidence.

Watts, Graeme H. "Intellectual disability and spirituality". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2006. https://hdl.handle.net/2123/27915.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Intellectual disability, and in particular profound intellectual disability, has an impact on all aspects of a quality of life including that of spiritual development. Some insight into this influence can be gained from a historical review of the attitudes in general towards people with an intellectual disability. Such a review may be especially pertinent when inferences can be drawn from a religious context. References from the Bible through to contemporary sources present, at best, a mixed record. Contemporary responses from the church have taken the form of policies and guidelines, as well as theological argument, encouraging the inclusion of people with intellectual disability in many aspects of church life. Such policies support programs both within and outside the church. In spite of such initiatives there remains a sense of unease regarding the spiritual status of persons with a disability and, in particular, those with an intellectual disability. A field research study addressed the specific issue of the portrayal of disability in the Bible. Given that for many, the Bible is a significant reference source, and for some, literally conveying the word of God, it is a matter for some concern that a majority of Biblical references to disability were perceived as being unfavourable. Calls for a theology of disability are countered by a preference to find a place for disability in an inclusive theology. An acceptance of disability as an integral part of the human state has been supported by reflections on image Dei leading to the concept of a Disabled God. A long-standing scholastic tradition in the church has begun to respond to the influence which may be exerted by non-verbal, nonrational symbolism. That such means of communication may have an influence on the spiritual lives of people with an intellectual disability, is no more evident than in participation in the sacraments, more particularly in the Eucharist. A field research project focussed on possible modifications to the Eucharist such that participation by persons with an intellectual disability may be enhanced. Through omission of content, together with substantial editing and rewarding, a service order was developed with the text supported by auditory, sensory and symbolic input. For persons with a profound intellectual disability, their presence and participation in the Eucharist epitomizes the hope of their spiritual journey.

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with the phenomenon of “cancel culture” which is gaining momentum in academic life and scientific research in Western universities, questioning its manifestations and consequences in terms of epistemology, freedom of expression and academic freedom. These are described and critically evaluated as an unprecedented form of intellectual and political totalitarianism exercised by militants of the reactionary „woke” ideology, by reactivating similar practices from the Soviet regime and the Chinese cultural revolution. The disastrous consequences of this phenomenon on members of the academic community and academic culture in general, which is undergoing a serious epistemic crisis, are revealed.

Abstract (sommario):
The article focuses on the «Intellectual Dark Web», an informal group of scholars, publicists, and activists who openly opposed the identity politics, political correctness, and the dominance of leftist ideas in American intellectual life. The author examines the reasons for the emergence of this group, names the main representatives and finds that the existence of «dark intellectuals» is the evidence of important problems in US public discourse. The term «Intellectual Dark Web» was coined by businessman Eric Weinstein to describe those who openly opposed restrictions on freedom of speech by the state or certain groups on the grounds of avoiding discrimination and hate speech. Extensive discussion of the phenomenon of «dark intellectuals» began after the publication of Barry Weiss’s article «Meet the renegades from the «Intellectual Dark Web» in The New York Times in 2018. The author writes of «dark intellectuals» as an informal group of «rebellious thinkers, academic apostates, and media personalities» who felt isolated from traditional channels of communication and therefore built their own alternative platforms to discuss awkward topics that were often taboo in the mainstream media. One of the most prominent members of this group, Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, publicly opposed the C-16 Act in September 2016, which the Canadian government aimed to implement initiatives that would prevent discrimination against transgender people. Peterson called it a direct interference with the right to freedom of speech and the introduction of state censorship. Other members of the group had a similar experience that their views were not accepted in the scientific or media sphere. The existence of the «Intellectual Dark Web» indicates the problem of political polarization and the reduction of the ability to find a compromise in the American intellectual sphere and in American society as a whole.

Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: The objective of the present study is, through the methodology of systematic review, to identify the benefits in QoL, starting from a PE program in individuals with ID and relate them to the model of Schalock et al. (2002). Condition being studied: In individuals with ID, characterized by a deficit of intellectual and adaptive functioning in the conceptual, social and practical domains, identified with mild, moderate, severe and profound degrees and develops before 18 or 22 years old (American Psychiatric Association, 2013; Schalock et al., 2010; 2021), measuring QoL allows: i) to understand their degree of satisfaction; ii) understand personal perceptions; iii) support decision-making; iv) evaluate the intervention; v) evaluate theoretical models. This measurement allows us to direct the individual to the life he likes and values (Schalock & Verdugo, 2002). Thus, the objective of the present study is, through the methodology of systematic review, to identify the benefits in QoL, starting from a PE program in individuals with ID and relate them to the model of Schalock et al. Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: This systematic review aims to compile and order all the training load measures, all fatigue assessments, and all well-being questionnaires used in volleyball training/match monitoring, systematizing them. Condition being studied: Training load: cumulative amount of stress placed on an individual from multiple sessions and games over a period of time. Neuromuscular fatigue: A response that is less than the expected or anticipated contractile response, for a given stimulation. Well-being: A continuous, active process, which is geared towards balancing one’s physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual wellness in order to enhance one’s life quality.5 In sport science the subjective measurement of the response to training and competition are used through the athlete self-report measures (ASRMs). In practice, these often comprise brief, single-item checklists derived from validated questionnaires that are intended to be completed daily.

Abstract (sommario):
The article reveals and characterizes the methodological features of teaching the discipline «Intellectual and Psychological Foundations of Mass Media Functioning» on the third year of the Faculty of Journalism at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. The focus is on the principles, functions, and standards of journalistic creativity during the full-scale war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. As the Russian genocidal, terrorist, and ecocidal war has posed acute challenges to the education and upbringing of student youth. A young person is called not only to acquire knowledge but to receive them simultaneously with comprehensive national, civic, and moral-spiritual upbringing. Teaching and educating students, the future journalists, on Ukrainian-centric, nation-building principles ensure a sense of unity between current socio-political processes and historical past, and open an intellectual window to Ukraine’s future. The teaching of the course ‘Intellectual-Psychological Foundations of Mass Media Functioning’ (lectures and practical classes, creative written assignments) is grounded in the philosophy of national education and upbringing, aimed at shaping a citizen-patriot and a knight, as only such a citizen is capable of selfless service to their own people, heroic struggle for freedom, and the united Ukrainian national state. The article presents student creative works, the aim of which is to develop historical national memory in students, promote the ideals of spiritual unity and integrity of Ukrainian identity, nurture the life-sustaining values of the Ukrainian language and culture, perpetuate the symbols of statehood, and strengthen the moral dignity and greatness of Ukrainian heroism. A methodology for assessing students’ pedagogical-professional competence and the fairness of teachers who deliver lectures and conduct practical classes has been summarized. The survey questions allow students to express their attitudes towards the content, methods, and forms of the educational process, which involves the application of experience from European and American countries, but the main emphasis is on the application of Ukrainian ethnopedagogy. Its defining ideas are democracy, populism, and patriotism, enriched with a distinct nation-building potential, which instills among students a unique culture of genuine Ukrainian history, the Ukrainian language and literature, national culture, and high journalistic professionalism. Key words: educator, student, journalism, education, patriotism, competence, national consciousness, Russian-Ukrainian war, professionalism.

Open School Doors User Needs Analysis Report : Developing diverse school / parents’ communities through innovative partnerships. Abstract (sommario):
This report presents the first intellectual output (IO1) of the Open School Doors project. IO1 has been jointly produced by the whole project consortium. It summarizes the national policies and initiatives among the partnership concerning the parental engagement / involvement of migrant / refugee parents toward school life. To this end literature resources have been collected and then analysed, with the following aims: a) Profile the target group per country, i.e. outline what is the main audience, its specific cultural characteristics (if any), what has to be taken into consideration for the design of a Training Framework that will match both their learning and cultural needs, etc. b) Elaborate on certain cases of successful parental engagement / involvement, i.e. mainly EU, nationally or locally funded projects. The rationale behind the intensive search of such cases was to identify practices that really work but not to ‘reinvent the wheel’, and have a valid starting point for Open Schools Doors (OSD) Training Framework ‐ no doubt that the amplitude and variety of such programs are good indicators of each country policy and posture towards social inclusion and provision of equal opportunities to education. c) Identify the gaps in the current situation among the participant countries and design a Training Framework that will actively facilitate parents’ engagement / involvement to school life in a tangible and long‐term manner. Methodically authors started with desk research and apart from that empirical data was collected from focus groups which were organized with the view to validating what was theoretically concluded from literature resources by asking the main target audience of the project about the Training Framework specifications and features. To this end the last section summarizes findings of both theoretical research and focus groups, providing thus an overview of what is needed and on which directions OSD didactic approach should focus.

In these states, language and religion were absolutized and it is thanks to this understanding of the essence of state-building and national identity that it is contrary to many difficulties achieve the desired life-affirming goal. The author emphasizes that any information in the broadest and narrow sense can be perceived without testing for compliance with the moral and spiritual mission of man, the fundamental values of the Ukrainian ethnic group, putting moral and spiritual values in the basis of state building. Blyde, Juan S. Assessing the Impacts of Intellectual Property Rights on Trade Flows in Latin America. Inter-American Development Bank, febbraio 2006. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0008575.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The protection of intellectual property has been a subject of great contention between developed and developing countries in recent years. Although the Agreement on TRIPs was signed by the members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) during the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations, its provisions are still viewed with animosity by many developing countries. A complete evaluation of the net effects of the TRIPs agreement in developing countries would require a broad assessment of all the costs and benefits described above. This is a formidable task that goes beyond the scope of this paper. Here, we concentrate on a rather small task and analyze the effects of IPRs over the flows of international trade flows, particularly to Latin America. As stated above, trade flows, and especially, flows of high-technology goods can be a source of technology diffusion. In that sense, exploring whether the international flows of high-technology goods are sensitive to IPRs protection in Latin America can be useful if one would like to consider the appropriateness of using intellectual property as a tool to promote technology diffusion throughout the region. Section II presents a brief theoretical background on the relationship between IPRs and trade flows. After a brief review of the empirical literature, Section III describes the data, the econometric model and the results. This section also provides some insights and potential implications of the main findings. Finally, Section IV concludes.
