Abstract (sommario):

The mission of the Institute for Hebrew Bibliography (IHB), located at the Jewish and National University Library (JNUL) in Jerusalem from the early 1960s to the present, is to describe all of the books printed in Hebrew characters since the invention of printing to 1960. The ambitious scope of the project was set only after discussions between historians and catalogers. The IHB created two card catalogs, one for bibliographic descriptions, and a second for biographies of Hebrew authors. The release, in 1994, of The Bibliography of the Hebrew Book CD-ROM, followed in 2002 by an Internet-accessible database (updated in 2004), are benchmarks that allow the public to assess the work of the IHB. Technological advances can be used to deliver a clean and easily searchable database only when basic concepts of cataloging/database retrieval have been fully addressed.

Hebrew incunabula amount to a rather modest, in terms of number, group of around 150 editions that were printed within the period from the late 60s of the 15th century to January 1, 1501 in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. Despite such a small number of Hebrew incunabula, the role they played in the history of the formation of European printing cannot be overlooked. Even less possible is to overestimate the importance of Hebrew incunabula for understanding Jewish spiritual life as it evolved in Europe during the Renaissance.Russian depositories house 43 editions of Hebrew incunabula, in 113 copies and fragments. The latter are distributed as following: the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences — 67 items stored; the Russian State Library — 38 items; the National Library of Russia — 7 items; the Jewish Religious Community of Saint Petersburg — 1 item. The majority of these books came in public depositories at the late 19th — first half of the 20th century from private collections of St. Petersburg collectors: Moses Friedland (1826—1899), Daniel Chwolson (1819—1911) and David Günzburg (1857—1910). This article looks into the circumstances of how exactly these incunabula were acquired by the depositories. For the first time there are analysed publications of Russian scholars that either include descriptions of Hebrew incunabula (inventories, catalogues, lists) or related to various aspects of Hebrew incunabula studies. The article presents the first annotated bibliography of all domestic publications that are in any way connected with Hebrew incunabula, covering the period from 1893 (the first publication) to the present. In private collections, there was paid special attention to the formation of incunabula collections. It was expressed in the allocation of incunabula as a separate group of books in printed catalogues and the publication of research works on incunabula studies, which belonged to the pen of collectors themselves and haven’t lost their scientific relevance today.

The Thesaurus of the Hebrew Book, by Yeshayahu Vinograd, is reviewed in the context of both general bibliography and of general Hebraica bibliography. Significant contributions in Hebrew bibliography preceding the Thesaurus are discussed. After reviewing a previous work of Y. Vinograd, the author evaluates the Thesaurus from a bibliographer's perspective, using the criteria established by Louise-Noelle Malcles. The article concludes with a biographical note on Yeshayahu Vinograd.

The standardization of Hebrew names in cataloging and bibliography has its roots in the Anglo-American tradition of Romanized author main entry. Cross-references from Hebrew names to their Roman equivalents are found in some British Hebraica catalogs published in the 19th century. In the Hebrew bibliographic tradition, in contrast, title main entry predominated and, given the nondistinctiveness of Jewish names, author access was rarely provided. Israeli librarians adopted the Western tradition of author main entry while retaining their commitment to original-alphabet cataloging; their Hebraic authority work consisted primarily of standardization of Hebrew orthography. The Hebraic capability of the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) made American Judaica librarians aware of the advantages of Hebrew name access; they had formerly been accustomed to Hebrew title access only. Many libraries are inputting parallel Hebrew access points to RLIN, with varying degrees of authority control. The USMARC Format for Authority Data has been revised to allow for parallel non-Roman data; the fields defined for non-Roman data have not been implemented, however, because the Library of Congress cannot handle non-Roman scripts in its processing system. Hebraic authority control is therefore done locally, in manual mode or with database management software.

The experience of compiling a bibliography of American Jewish liturgy from the establishment of the press through 1925 is discussed. The parameters of the bibliography are detailed as well as its contents. The present lack of complete or systematic documentation of American Jewish liturgy in Judaica libraries is noted. Also discussed is the significance of liturgy for the study of American Jews, their religious and cultural identity, as well as their demographics. This paper details the experience of compiling a bibliography of American Jewish liturgy through 1925, and describes some of the parameters and contents of the bibliography. This bibliography was published by Hebrew Union College Press in late 1997 under the title American Jewish Liturgies: A Bibliography of American Jewish Liturgy from the Establishment of the Press in the Colonies through 1925.

Abstract The author describes the procedures and mechanisms used by Israel's Central Committee for Technological Terminology (CCTT), a branch of the Academy of the Hebrew Language at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, in the development and maintenance of standard Hebrew terminology in science and technology. Lexicographic and sociolinguistic processes involved in the formation of new scientific terms in Hebrew, such as the effect of synonyms, transliteration, international terms and linguistic structure, fuzzy usage, pressure of countries of origin, etc., are referred to along with a broad survey of the Central Committee's printed and computerized output over the years. In order to provide an updated terminological service that is easily accessible to the public, CCTT's Office at Technion is developing a computerized dictionary database for local and net-based multiuser environments.

The Africa Bibliography has been published by the International African Institute (IAI) as a print volume since 1985. The first editor was Hector Blackhurst, a social anthropologist turned academic librarian at the University of Manchester. In the inaugural volume, Jacob F. Ade Ajayi, the then Chairman of the International African Institute wrote that ‘Greater technical experience will, it is hoped, facilitate typographical improvements'.1 A second concern of the Bibliography, as expressed by Ajayi, was to monitor and record material produced in Africa ‘that does not always circulate widely and might otherwise escape notice’.2

This article focuses on the complex cultural and political dynamics of translation of Palestinian literature into Hebrew, from a Palestinian perspective. I focus specifically on translation of the literature of Palestinian Israeli citizens, and on a recent, unique model of translation praxis developed by the Maktub project, based in the Van Leer Institute of Jerusalem. The model, entailing dialogic and bi-national translation, aims to turn translation into an act of resistance, through which Palestinian presence ‘infiltrates’ Hebrew cultural consciousness. The article analyses the Hebrew translation of the novel Burdaqaneh (translated as ‘An Acre-esque Tale’) by the Palestinian author Eyad Barghuthy. Specifically, the article attempts to shed light on the process of translation, its aims and methods, and their overall cultural and political import.

Officially inaugurated in 1925, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem was designed to serve the academic needs of the Jewish people and the Zionist enterprise in British Mandatory Palestine, as well as to help fulfill the economic and social requirements of the Middle East. It is intriguing that a university with such practical goals should have as one of its central pillars an institute for pure mathematics that purposely dismissed any of the varied fields of applied mathematics. This paper tells of the preparations for the inauguration of the Hebrew University during the years 1920–1925 and analyzes the founding phase of the Einstein Institute of Mathematics that was established there during the years 1924–1928. Special emphasis is given to the first terms in which this Institute operated, starting from the winter of 1927 with the activities of the director and one of the founders, the German mathematician Edmund Landau, and onward from 1928 when his successors, particularly Adolf Abraham Halevi Fraenkel and Mihály-Michael Fekete, continued Landau's heritage of pure mathematics. The paper shows why and how the Institute succeeded in rejecting applied mathematics from its court and also explores the controversial issue of center and periphery in the development of science, a topic that is briefly analyzed in the concluding section.

History of Science Bibliography at the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences The article presents the history of preparing the history of science bibliography at the Institute for the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The purpose of creating such a bibliography is to facilitate scholars’ access to publications in this field of knowledge. The beginnings of this bibliography date back to 1966, but the official date of its creation should be 1971. The article recalls its authors and describes the thematic scope from its inception to 2008 when the publication was discontinued for financial reasons. In 2018, the publishing of the history of science bibliography was resumed.

This study examines East Jerusalem teachers’ perceptions of and attitudes toward acquiring and communicating in Hebrew as a second language. The context of the study is a complex education system dominated by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. East Jerusalem’s education system is divided between schools supervised by Israel’s Ministry of Education and those supervised by its Palestinian Authority counterpart. Israel’s Ministry of Education requires that teachers in its East Jerusalem public schools learn basic Hebrew language and communication at an Israeli institute of higher education. This research seeks to examine a sampling of East Jerusalem teachers’ perceptions and attitudes toward acquiring Hebrew as a second language and communicating in it with the majority Jewish society. Study participants, all Arab teachers from East Jerusalem who had studied Hebrew at an Israeli college, were asked about their command and usage of Hebrew in several open-ended questions provided on a structured questionnaire that offered the respondents the ability to elaborate on their thoughts. The responses were subsequently assessed qualitatively. The study found that the participants’ willingness to learn Hebrew for daily communication purposes was motivated primarily by instrumental and pragmatic considerations. According to the findings, the participants’ communication in Hebrew was accompanied by feelings that in the process of acquiring and using the language, they were jeopardizing their sense of Palestinian identity as Palestinian citizens under Israeli rule. These perceptions arose in the context of the precarious status of East Jerusalem. The finding that national identification appears to impede second language acquisition has important implications for national language policy in similar regions.

Three texts are scrutinized in this monograph: Hayy ibn Yaqzan (Alive son of Awake), the Epistle or philosophic “Recital” composed in Arabic prose by the Muslim sage ibn Sina (Avicenna, 980–1037); Hayy ben Meqitz, the closely related Hebrew poem composed by the Andalusian Jewish sage Abraham ibn Ezra (1089–1164); and Hayy ibn Yaqzan, the more loosely related Arabic treatise composed by the Andalusian Muslim sage Abu Bakr ibn Tufayl (1116–1185). Each of the texts is well known to specialists in medieval intellectual history. Editions and critical discussions abound, almost all of them listed in the bibliography (pp. 245-65). The Arabic texts have long been accessible in reliable English translations. Thanks to Aaron W. Hughes, the same can now be said for ibn Ezra's less familiar narrative poem. In the appendix (pp. 189–207), the poem is rendered into English based on the original Hebrew text published in 1983 by Israel Levin. The translation is enhanced by references to the biblical idioms employed by ibn Ezra who ingeniously transformed ibn Sina's profoundly Islamic original into an equally stunning Hebrew gem.

The kaleidoscope of pseudonyms behind which he hid himself on the pages of the Russian- Jewish weekly Rassvet is a reflection of the multifaceted personality of Zakharia Klyuchevich. Historian, archaeologist, linguist, teacher, political activist, journalist, caricaturist, painter, poet, screenwriter, biologist, it is difficult to find an area into which he did not venture. The spectrum of languages he mastered, or tried as an author, is equally colorful: from his native Russian to quasi-native French, through English, Hebrew, German, Yiddish, Polish, Ancient Greek, Turkish, up to Albanian and Etruscan, two languages he tried to link by identifying the latter as a protolanguage of the former. The amount of material left behind by this polyhedric author is voluminous. Correspondence in various languages (Italian, Russian, English, and French), diaries, theater screenplays (Hebrew, English), essays (French), poetry (French, Russian, and Hebrew), authored language textbooks (French-Hebrew, Russian-Hebrew), sketches, paintings, and newspaper clippings are preserved at the Jabotinsky Institute in Tel Aviv. Through a thorough analysis of this material, we will try to draw the portrait of this ish eshkolot, this Renaissance type of intellectual, who has been forgotten in their treatises by historians of literature, Zionism, art and archeology, perhaps precisely because of the difficulty in tracing his movements and activities, the excessive chameleon-like nature of his occupations and cryptonyms.

The need to document the history of art in Poland, and to provide a bibliographic record of, and access to, that documentation, is felt the more keenly because Poland’s cultural heritage has been so vulnerable to the ravages of history. The Polish Art Bibliography 1801-1944, a labour of love dating back to 1951, existed for many years as a constantly expanding card index at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy; publication in a series of volumes began with Volume I Part 1 in 1975, and brought with it problems of editing and selection. Volumes II and III have followed; Volume IV, devoted to architecture, is in preparation.

Mahmud Darwish was undoubtedly one of the major Palestinian poets of the peaceful resistance against Israeli aggression, expulsions of Palestinians from their own lands, their houses and their other properties. Darwish also wrote prose, like for example Fi Hadrat al-Ghiyab (In the Presence of Absence) work in which he emphasized the need to re-write the history of Palestine, since Israel has constantly destroyed Palestinian villages, and has expelled the Palestinians from their own towns. Israel has systematically substituted these villages and their names by Hebrew ones. This way Israel conveys the notion that they are Hebrew villages. On the other hand, it is possible to notice that Israel denies the pre-existence of the Palestinian settlements, towns and villages in those places. For Darwish, therefore, there is a clear need to re-write the history of Palestine, in order to show that where there are nowadays many Jewish towns, there were Palestinian villages in the past. On June 6, 2014, he would have turned 80 years old to the famous Ukrainian scientist - religious scholar, candidate of philosophical sciences, associate professor, professor of the Department of Philosophy and Ukrainian Studies Gudiy Arsen Nikolayevich. He was born in the village of Novoe Selo, Pidvolochysky District, in Ternopil. In 1957 he graduated from the Faculty of History of I. I. Franko Lviv State University and in the same year began his labor career as a teacher of the history of Novosilsky secondary school. While working, Arsen Nikolayevich graduated from postgraduate study at the Department of Philosophy at Lviv University. Even then, he had a number of publications on philosophical topics. Given A.M. Gudyma's postgraduate study, the regional department of public education recommended him to work at the medical institute in January 1970.

The Sorbian bibliography – its history and futureThe first Sorbian bibliographic registers were compiled in the 18th century and also became a tool for the growing nationalhistorical awareness of the Sorbian intelligentsia. In 1847, the society named Maćica Serbska was founded to promote scholarly and cultural discussions for a national-cultural discourse. In this function, it also made publication activities possible. In addition, the society founded a central Sorbian library and recorded all new Sorbian-language books in its journal. A genuine Sorbian bibliography was compiled by Jakub Wjacsławk in 1929 (re-issued and supplemented in 1952). The Institute for Sorbian People Research, founded in Bautzen in 1951 (since 1992 called the Sorbian Institute) continued this work. Predominantly in five-year intervals, altogether ten volumes of this bibliography were published in the period 1945–2005. Since 1986, this was done electronically, establishing a database, which has been made available on the website of the Sorbian Institute since 2003 and also forms part of the German-language virtual library Slavistik, the so called Slavistik-Portal.

The article examines scientific and auxiliary bibliographic manuals, which reflect the publications of the art historian of Uzbekistan, academician G. A. Pugachenkova. Employees of the Institute of Art Studies of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan are working on the creation of bibliographic collections, in which specialists can find information about all publications of scientists. These biobibliographic indexes keep track of all printed products of specialists from the first articles of the scientist to the fundamental scientific publications of the given author. The article analyzes the principles of selection and the order of placing major scientific works in the bibliographic index. Such bibliographic aids make it possible to trace the dynamics of changes in the scientific interests of a scientist, to consider his involvement in the study of the field of knowledge to which his publications are devoted, to reveal his creative and scientific contacts.

The history of the first in the country dissertation defense board, established at the N. K. Krupskaya Communist Institute of Political Education (today – St.Petersburg State Institute of Culture) is examined. The Board was established to review the theses in librarianship and bibliography. The analysis is based on the bibliography of dissertations defended during 80 years: the bibliography comprises 592 works. The main historical stages of the board are characterized; data on the number of doctor and candidate defenses during various periods is given. Several doctorate theses that made serious impact in the library and information sector are characterized; the geography of degree applicants (USSR republics, Asian, African, Latin American states) is analyzed; the subject scope of their investigations is discussed. The main research vectors and the most efficient supervisors are named. The author reveals the links between the defended dissertations and the Institute’s area of studies and scholar schools in the library and information sciences. The reasons for decreasing number of theses and changing subject scope are discussed.

The most important bibliography for Dutch art is the Bibliography of the Netherlands Institute for Art History (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie). This bibliography, first published in 1943, is in fact a continuation in another form of H. van Hall, Repertorium voor de geschiedenis der Nederlandsche schilder - en graveerkunst sedert het begin van de 12de eeuw tot het eind van 1932 (Repertory for the history of Dutch painting and engraving since the beginning of the 12th century up till the end of 1932), The Hague 1936 (Vol.2: 1933-1946 appeared in 1949). The last volume published, Vol.16, Part 1: Old Art, comprises the years 1971-1972; Vol.17, Part 1: Old Art, for the years 1973-1974, is in the course of publication. The material for the years after 1974, however, is put on fiches, and can be consulted at the Institute. The article is a tribute to the prominent Soviet and Ukrainian documentologist and bibliography scientist Galina N. Shvetsova-Vodka. Upon her graduation from the East-Siberian State Institute of Culture (Ulan-Ude) in 1966, Galina Shvetsova-Vodka studied at Leningrad State Institute of Culture under Master’s Program (1967–1971), and taught at the Institute’s bibliography chair till 1979. She moved to the city of Rovno, Ukrainian SSR, and served as an assistant professor at the bibliographic studies chair of Rovno State Institute of Culture (1979– 1987), and headed the chair till 1995. In 1995–1998, Galina Shvetsova-Vodka served as the professor of the chair, and then, to the end of her life – the professor of Rovno State Humanitarian University. In 2002, she defended her doctoral thesis “The document and book within the system of social communications” and thus became the first Doctor of Science in documentology in the Commonwealth of Independent States. She became a professor in 2005. Galina N. Shvetsova- Vodka died on May 1, 2023, in Rovno, Ukraine. The range of her interests in science, as reflected in her 260 publications, comprised documentology, bibliography, library science, bibliology. Her principal works are “Defining the document in the documentary and information studies” (1991), “The general theory of document and book” (2009), “The document in the light of noocommunicology” (2010). In the area of documentology, Galina Shvetsova-Vodka was a pioneer in many senses. She was one of the first of those who supported the idea of document – noosphere interconnection, and the concept of Bibliologos introduced by Arkady V. Sokolov. She made a significant contribution to the bibliographic science by publishing the textbook “The general bibliographic science: The basics of the theory of bibliography” (1995); “The bibliographic resources in Ukraine” (2000); “The introduction to the bibliography” (2004) (2004). She also studied the history of critical bibliographic periodicals of 1920s, many other aspects of the bibliography theory, history, and practice.

The Academy of the Hebrew Language is considered the supreme institute for the Hebrew language in Israel, a status which is also expressed legally in Israeli law since 1953. Its members are known and distinguished linguists, poets, writers and translators. In the years 1994–1995 the Academy plenum devoted three meetings to discuss the question of how to pronounce, spell and use the name “Palestine” in Hebrew. The protocols of those discussions are the corpus studied in this article. A close examination of the discussions reveals significant, subtle, and sometimes paradoxical relationships between the political and the linguistic. In addition, the article traces the way in which the inevitable question regarding the possibility of distinguishing between these two facets permeated the debates. The article points out correlations between answers to this question, local political positions, and linguistic theories. It suggests that in addition to critical discourse analysis methodologies, in order to address this question an integration of some notions from the Derridian linguistic critique is indispensable, and by using them renegotiates the nature of the zone between the linguistic and the political. It is within the same blurred, ungraspable zone between the political and the linguistic, the zone from which the very wish to give a name arises and motivates the discussions, that this wish is also, at its peak, exhausted, interrupted, bringing the discussions to their indecisive conclusion.

The authors explore the influence of the Swiss theologian, Orientalist, and Christian Hebraist, Johann Heinrich Hottinger, who preceded Shabbetai Bass in developing and implementing a classified Hebraica-Judaica bibliography. His ideas and theories have heretofore not been closely examined by Judaica bibliographers or researchers of Jewish intellectual history. Hottinger’s innovation was his degree of abstraction: that of analyzing a collection according to its contents. A study of his theories and classification systems can stimulate and encourage a renewed look at early practices and offer insights that can be relevant to current research. Unless otherwise noted, translations from the original Latin, Hebrew, and other languages are the authors’.
