Abstract (sommario):
The mission of the Institute for Hebrew Bibliography (IHB), located at the Jewish and National University Library (JNUL) in Jerusalem from the early 1960s to the present, is to describe all of the books printed in Hebrew characters since the invention of printing to 1960. The ambitious scope of the project was set only after discussions between historians and catalogers. The IHB created two card catalogs, one for bibliographic descriptions, and a second for biographies of Hebrew authors. The release, in 1994, of The Bibliography of the Hebrew Book CD-ROM, followed in 2002 by an Internet-accessible database (updated in 2004), are benchmarks that allow the public to assess the work of the IHB. Technological advances can be used to deliver a clean and easily searchable database only when basic concepts of cataloging/database retrieval have been fully addressed.

Abstract (sommario):
Hebrew incunabula amount to a rather modest, in terms of number, group of around 150 editions that were printed within the period from the late 60s of the 15th century to January 1, 1501 in Italy, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. Despite such a small number of Hebrew incunabula, the role they played in the history of the formation of European printing cannot be overlooked. Even less possible is to overestimate the importance of Hebrew incunabula for understanding Jewish spiritual life as it evolved in Europe during the Renaissance.Russian depositories house 43 editions of Hebrew incunabula, in 113 copies and fragments. The latter are distributed as following: the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts of the Russian Academy of Sciences — 67 items stored; the Russian State Library — 38 items; the National Library of Russia — 7 items; the Jewish Religious Community of Saint Petersburg — 1 item. The majority of these books came in public depositories at the late 19th — first half of the 20th century from private collections of St. Petersburg collectors: Moses Friedland (1826—1899), Daniel Chwolson (1819—1911) and David Günzburg (1857—1910). This article looks into the circumstances of how exactly these incunabula were acquired by the depositories. For the first time there are analysed publications of Russian scholars that either include descriptions of Hebrew incunabula (inventories, catalogues, lists) or related to various aspects of Hebrew incunabula studies. The article presents the first annotated bibliography of all domestic publications that are in any way connected with Hebrew incunabula, covering the period from 1893 (the first publication) to the present. In private collections, there was paid special attention to the formation of incunabula collections. It was expressed in the allocation of incunabula as a separate group of books in printed catalogues and the publication of research works on incunabula studies, which belonged to the pen of collectors themselves and haven’t lost their scientific relevance today.

"Extracting and Tagging Unstructured Citation of a Hebrew Religious Document". In InSITE 2019: Informing Science + IT Education Conferences: Jerusalem. Informing Science Institute, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.28945/4345.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Aim/Purpose: Finding and tagging citation on an ancient Hebrew religious document. These documents have no structured citations and have no bibliography. Background: We look for common patterns within Hebrew religious texts. Methodology: We developed a method that goes over the texts and extracts sentences con-taining the names of three famous authors. Within these sentences we find common ways of addressing those three authors and with these patterns we find references to various other authors. Contribution: This type of text is rich in citations and references to authors, but because there is no structure of references it is very difficult for a computer to automatically identify the references. We hope that with the method we have developed it will be easier for a computer to identify references and even turn them into hyper-links. Findings: We have provided an algorithm to solve the problem of non-structured cita-tions in an old Hebrew plain text. The algorithm definitely was able to find many citations but it has missed out some types of citations. Impact on Society: When the computer recognizes references, it will be able to build (at least par-tially) a bibliography that currently does not exist in such texts at all. Over time, OCR scans more and more ancient texts. This method can make people's access and understanding much. Future Research: After we identify the references, we plan to automatically create a bibliography for these texts and even transform those references into hyperlinks.

Abstract (sommario):
It marked 120 years since the birth of Tatyana Semenovna Skarbilovich, the founder of Soviet and Russian phytonematology and helminthology (January 24, 1904). While in the Moscow University, T. S. Skarbilovich studied in a helminthological group organized by Academician K. I. Skryabin in 1924. In 1926 to 1933, T. S. Skarbilovich mainly worked in zoohelminthology. During this period, she published 20 scientific papers on helminth fauna of domestic and wild animals, as well as biology of some helminths. T. S. Skarbilovich stood at the origins of phytohelminthology in our country. From 1929 until the end of her life (1988), T. S. Skarbilovich’s scientific activity was associated with the All-Union Institute of Helminthology where she headed the Laboratory of Phytohelminthology for more than 25 years, and then continued to work as a consulting Professor. Tatyana Semenovna studied dozens of phytohelminth species that cause nematode diseases of agricultural, medicinal, and ornamental plants. The results of these studies were presented in the monograph that was translated into Chinese and published in the PRC. An in-depth and detailed study of biology and ecology of, and control measures against, the beet cyst nematode formed the basis of her doctorate thesis. She was the author of over 100 scientific papers. Bibliography "Domestic literature on nematodes of plants, insects, soil and aquatic environments for 1874 to 1980" published by T. S. Skarbilovich was translated into English in India.
