Abstract (sommario):
The reader is offered an extensive overview of the 10th- to 20th-c. Spanish and Latin American literature. The book considers not only preeminent authors like Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Márquez, and Cortázar, but also those known only to scholars — like R. Llull, J. de Espronceda, and J. Valera. Thanks to the author’s impressive cultural erudition, the book demonstrates the numerous comparative connections of Spanish-speaking writers with world literature. Thus, without Cervantes’ Don Quixote, neither Dostoevsky, nor Cortázar, nor Márquez would have written their novels. A Russian reader will be especially interested in Russo-Spanish connections, as their study is also included in the scope of Bagno’s research. In this regard, particularly interesting is the analysis of Lope de Vega’s play about False Dmitry I El Gran Duque de Moscovia. Another exciting topic discussed in the book is the story of Spaniards who developed strong ties to Russia, like Odessa’s founder J. de Ribas and the Spanish ambassador in the 19th-c. Petersburg J. Valera.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACTThis article reconstructs the trajectory of the Kwame Nkrumah Ideological Institute (KNII) to shed light on the politics of socialist education in 1960s Ghana. On the basis of archival evidence, it explores the changing role of the institute in the making of Nkrumahism as public discourse and documents the evolving relationship between the universalism of Marxism-Leninism and the quest for more local political iconographies centred on Nkrumah's life and work. Secondly, the article analyses the individual motivations and experiences of a sample of foreign lecturers. The article suggests that ideological institutes offer insights into the processes by which official ideologies were created and disseminated, a foil through which to interrogate the usages and appropriation of social sciences education, and a window onto the multiple ways in which local and foreign agents negotiated their identities and political participation in African socialist experiments.

Abstract (sommario):
This is a study of a copy of A Book about Faith (Kniga o vere), which was published in Moscow in 1648. The book was found in Vyatka in 2019 during an archaeographic expedition organized by the Repository of Ancient Manuscripts (Drevlekhranilishche) of the Institute of Russian Literature (Pushkinskii Dom) in St. Petersburg. According to a note in the book, this copy was donated to the Spaso-Lomskaia Ignatieva Hermitage in 1659. This copy of A Book about Faith represents one of the few pieces of evidence for the early period of Saint Ignatii Lomskii’s veneration. This study shows that the book was donated when the hermitage was under the rule of Steward Grigorii (Ivan Neronov) and that its donor was Feoktist, the former hegumen of the Moscow Zlatoust Monastery. The note represents Feoktist’s autograph. The note is examined in the context of his biography and literary activities. A detailed examination of this note also reveals new materials concerning the history of the Spaso-Lomskaia Hermitage. One of the findings is that one book that represented a gift by Tsarina Maria Ilinichna, which is now housed in the collection of M. I. Chuvanov in the Russian State Library in Moscow, once belonged to the library of the Spaso-Lomskaia Ignatieva Hermitage.

Abstract (sommario):
The review examines a publication of the poem ‘Zone,’ which counts among the most famous works by the innovative French poet Guillaume Apollinaire, in the original language and seven Russian translations, two of which were made in 2022 under the auspices of the Pushkin programme funded by the French Institute of the French Embassy in Moscow to promote book publishing. The book’s structure can baffle the reader, just like Apollinaire’s poem does. Opening with a double dedication to the 110th anniversary of the poem’s original publication and the centenary of M. Kudinov’s birth, the book then displays the original French version of ‘Zone,’ followed by the publisher’s colophon. The subsequent sections of the book seem to follow the conventional logic: N. Zubkov’s foreword discusses the unique characteristics of the French poem’s poetics and outlines the key points for a comparative analysis of the translations. The sequence of the printed translations is at odds with their chronological order, a conscious decision made by the publisher. The final section entitled ‘In the Russian mirror’ features insightful comments on the poem offered by distinguished scholars of French poetry such as N. Balashov, S. Velikovsky, Z. Kirnoze, and M. Yasnov.

Abstract (sommario):
The introductory article analyses the materials selected for publication in the column “Archive” and compares the articles of critics of the second half of the 19th century and the first third of the 20th century in their assessment of the influence of gender division of boys and girls reading. The articles of M. K. Tsebrikova’s “Chtenie dlja podrostkov” (Reading for Teenagers) (1888) and P. A. Rubtsova “Kakie jelementy literaturnogo proizvedenija vydeljajutsja det’mi. (K probleme — ‘Chem vozdejstvuet kniga na rebenka’)” (What elements of literary work are distinguished by children) (1929) are devoted to research in the field of sociology of reading and analysis of the perception of certain themes in children’s literature. The attention of the critics focuses on the issues of reading circle formation, reader’s reception, and reader’s characteristics such as age, gender, belonging to the social environment, and educational institution. The introduction comments on the approaches to the regulation of children’s reading reflected in the articles of A. Danilov, the critic under the pseudonym L., M. K. Tsebrikova, and I. Aleshintsev. The article cites some results of the studies of boys and girls reading, carried out in the 1920s by the Institute of children’s reading: the quantitative data characterizing the agents that form the repertoire of children’s reading, as well as features of children’s literature perception of different age and gender.

Anisimov, Alex O. "Commercial Activity of the I. Ladyzhnikov Publishing Company in Berlin (1905—1931)". Bibliotekovedenie [Russian Journal of Library Science] 69, n. 6 (8 febbraio 2021): 643–54. http://dx.doi.org/10.25281/0869-608x-2020-69-6-643-654.

Abstract (sommario):
The author reveals the commercial aspects of activity of the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company in Berlin in the first decades of the twentieth century. This paper clarifies the company’s concept and fills in a number of gaps in the study of Russian-language foreign book publishing in the first decades of the twentieth century, due to the small number of comprehensive studies in this area. Getting acquainted with Russian-language emigrant book publishing is of great interest, since it reflects the large-scale processes of the post-revolutionary breakdown of the cultural life of Russia. The source base of the research is the documents of a number of Russian archives, as well as the archive of the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company, discovered by the author at the International Institute of Social History (IISH) in Amsterdam (Netherlands). The author introduces into scientific circulation a number of new, previously unpublished data about the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company. The article reveals the circle of people who stood at its origins: on the one hand, these are the leaders of early Bolshevism (V.I. Lenin, L.B. Krasin, V.D. Bonch-Bruevich), on the other — the central figures of the writing group “Znanye” [Knowledge] (M. Gorky, К.P. Pyatnitsky). The author presents all the names under which the publishing company operated in different years, accurately dates the stages of its existence from the moment of its origin (5th August, 1905) to the beginning of the 1930s and proposes periodization. The archive of the publishing company preserved 40 contracts with the authors; therefore it was possible to determine the circle of writers and playwrights who collaborated with it: M. Gorky, S.S. Yushkevich, S.G. Petrov (Skitalets), A.N. Kuropatkin, S.N. Rabinovich (Sholom Aleichem), Sh. Ash and other writers. The author notes that among other tasks, the publishing house defended the copyright of Russian writers abroad. The article analyses the total annual circulation of publications, the number of authors, as well as the total annual turnover of the company. For the first time, the author considers the role and place of the “Novaya Russkaya Kniga” [New Russian Book] magazine in the activities of the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company. The author established that the 1920s were the most successful in terms of commercial activity for the publishing company. Thus, from February to March 1924, the company “absorbed” three of the major competitors: “Helikon” publishing company, “Russian Universal Publishing Company” and “Epoch” publisher. The article presents the exact dates of the contracts for the purchase of publishers, the data on the sales value and the features of the agreements concluded. In particular, I. Ladyzhnikov company bought the publishers with the preservation of their trademarks, purchased their warehouses with commodity stocks, contracts concluded with authors, as well as debt obligations to banks. The author concludes that for almost the entire first third of the twentieth century, the I. Ladyzhnikov publishing company was the most powerful commercial enterprise among all the publishing companies of “Russian Berlin”.

Snigireva, Tatiana A., e Alexey V. Podchinenov. "The Samizdat Generation. Book Review: Rusina, Yu.A. (2019) Samizdat v SSSR: Teksty i Sud’by [Samizdat in the USSR: Texts and Destinies]. St. Petersburg: Aleteyya; Yekaterinburg: Ural Federal University". Tekst. Kniga. Knigoizdanie, n. 26 (2021): 179–89. http://dx.doi.org/10.17223/23062061/26/11.

Abstract (sommario):
Samizdat materials are a huge collection of documents of different genres that can be viewed in the context of the dissident phenomenon in the USSR. Only the latest decade saw the intensive growth of scientific interest to this phenomenon, and, therefore, these historical records require further interpretation and analysis; the latter became the main purposes of the monograph reviewed. The study combines both theoretical and historical aspects of studying Soviet samizdat. The term “samizdat” is understood in its wider sense, not only as fiction prohibited for publication, but also as a product of social, political, journalistic, human rights and other activities. At the same time, emphasis is placed on historical sources that allow documenting the human rights process. Samizdat is considered in three aspects: as a phenomenon of the 20th century supplementing official culture; as a kind of self-organization, self-reflection of society, a sign of intellectual reaction and an information channel; and as a historical source that makes it possible to study Soviet society and its reaction to state policy. This enables the author to present a representative and fairly complete picture of Russian samizdat. The notion “samizdat” is thoroughly analyzed, as well as the problem of the scientific classification of samizdat documents. The new classification system is demanded to be more detailed, presenting a complex structure, which takes into account various types and content of these historical sources. Working out a well-developed classification should ensure the use of available sources and their information potential. The book describes the sources of some varieties of samizdat documents: open letters, appeals and statements of protest, court proceedings, collections of documents. In a separate chapter, self-published magazines are analyzed as one of the most convincing manifestations of the various opposition movements organizational design. Particular attention is paid to the bulletin A Chronicle of Current Events, which has played an important role in reporting on human rights violations, disseminating the ideas of human rights defenders and maintaining links between human rights groups and organizations as a consolidating information center. The first issue of the Chronicle of 1968 is presented in the book as a holistic text, from the list of headings to the definition of the semantic strategy of the periodical, its tactics of layout and design, which allows us to correlate it with the legendary Herzen’s Kolokol [Bell] both in design and in its impact on public consciousness. The bulletin structure and its main sections were formed from the first issues: “Courts”, “Arrests”, “Extra-Judicial Prosecutions”, “Searches and Interrogations”, “In Prisons and Camps”, “In Psychiatric Hospitals”, “Persecution of Believers”, “Right to Leave”, “Jewish Movement”, “Through the Pages of the Soviet press”, “In Exile”, “Official Documents”, “Samizdat News”, etc. The analysis of other quite numerous samizdat magazines (Politicheskiy Dnevnik [Political Diary], Obshchestvennye Problemy [Social Problems], Veche, Vestnik Spaseniya [Herald of Salvation], Iskhod [Exodus], Vestnik Iskhoda [Herald of Exodus], Belaya Kniga Iskhoda [White Book of Exodus], etc.), including the “second culture” ones (37, Chasy [Clock], Obvodnoy Kanal [Bypass Channel], Metrodor, Summa [Sum], Nadezhda [Hope], etc.), allows the author to document the well-known statement of Igor Shafarevich that with all the various shades of independent thought in our country, the unifying principle was the feeling of lack of freedom. The author pays attention to historical discourse aimed at analyzing social and political processes via studying samizdat authors’ and developers’ biographies, as well as to the history of the texts. Biographies are given briefly, most often in the form of page footnotes, but their presence adds “humanity” to historical and documentary research (for example, biographies of V. Krasin, V. Chelidze, Yu. Shikhanovich, V. Rutminsky, Gr. Fedoseev, etc.). The book discusses the main varieties of social and political samizdat – “classic” and little-studied samizdat texts. Considerable attention is paid to “provincial” students’ literary and journalistic amateur periodicals of Sverdlovsk. The almanac Nashe Tvorchestvo [Our Creativity] (Ural State University, 1946–1949), Vskhody [Shoots], V Poiskakh [In Search] (Ural State University, 1956), the Ural Pedagogical Institute wall newspaper BOKS (Boevoy Organ Komsomol’skoy Satiry [Komsomol Satire Combat Organ], 1943–1960) are analyzed for the first time in the all-Union context. Student manuscript and typewritten magazines, a typical phenomenon for Soviet universities of that time, on the one hand, became the harbingers of political samizdat, on the other hand, a consequence of the creative and spiritual upsurge that caused the exposure of the personality cult. The book concludes with a brief bibliography on the Soviet samizdat history and an appendix including well-known examples of samizdat texts (“I Can’t Be Silent!” by P. Grigorenko, “The Final Word of the Accused Bukovsky”, “The White Book of Exodus” (1972)), as well as unique graphic jokes of BOKS.

In Traditional and innovative ways to explore social history of Russia 12th–20th centuries: Collection of articles in honor of Elena Nikolaevna Shveikovskaya, 68–80. Abstract (sommario):
The article describes the feasibility of the study of prices fixed for bread (rye, oat, barley and wheat), one of the basic products consumed by Russia’s population in the early Modern Time according to materials containing in monastery vkladnye knigi of the XVI–XVII centuries. As a rule, all monasteries used to keep account books irrespective of how large the monastery brethren were, the time of monastery foundation and means of support they had. As a rule, contributions to monastries were priced, and it makes it possible to use such contribution records for a study of price history including grain prices. The study is based on the records containing in the account book of Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery for the period between 1559/60–1620s. (Archive of St.Petersburg History Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences. Coll. 115. T. 1074). The found price data are comparable with grain prices published on the basis of account books of the Russian North monasteries and feature «bread» price changes in the region over the period of the crisis in the final third of the XVI century, Great Famine and the Time of Trouble at the turn of the XVII century.
