Abstract (sommario):
This article describes the main innovations theories and concepts of the 20th century. Economists confirm the importance of scientific and technological progress, innovation and institutional changes in stimulating economic growth and development. The article reviews studies conducted by prominent Russian and foreign economists such as M.I. Tugan-Baranovsky, N.D. Kondratiev, J. Schumpeter, P.A. Sorokin, S.Yu. Glaziev, G. Bernal, R. Solow, S. Kuznets, B. Twiss, G. Mensch, K. Freeman, J. Vandein, and other researchers who have made significant contributions to the study of innovations. The article outlines basic innovative theories and concepts, the evolution of approaches to assessing innovation activities, and the analysis of the impact of innovations on economic development. Important topics such as economic cycles, Kondratiev’s wave theory, Schumpeter’s concepts of “creative destruction”, as well as findings done by Bernal, Solow, and Kuznets confirming the influence of scientific and technological progress on economic growth are covered in the article. The importance of scientific research in the field of innovations is emphasized by G. Mensch, K. Freeman, J. Van Deyn, A. Kleinknecht, F. Hayek, B. Lundvall, R. Coase, S. Davis, E. Mansfield, A. Romeo, and D. North, who have identified the role of innovations in stimulating economic development and the need for institutional changes to support the innovative activities. Glaziev’s studies on technological paradigms, Freeman’s concept of a national innovation system, Van Deyn’s hypothesis on the connection between innovation and socio-economic development, as well as the work of Twiss, who highlighted the decisive impact of science and technology on socio-economic development, underscore the significance of research in the field of innovations and its impact on the economy. Innovations theories and concepts define innovation as a crucial factor in economic development, stimulating competition, increasing productivity, and contributing to the restructuring of the economy. Understanding the patterns of innovation activities and the factors influencing their effectiveness is crucial for developing effective economic policies. The results of the research can be used to determine the place of innovation in the modern world, evaluate its impact on the economic growth, and develop measures to support and stimulate the innovative activities of Russian economic entities, ensuring technological leadership and sovereignty in current conditions.

Abstract (sommario):
The expansive research on innovation in organizations has primarily followed a technological imperative, postulating that organizations organize their innovation efforts through research and development (R&D) activities. Theories of innovation are thus shaped mosdy from the studies of technology-based innovations in the manufacturing sector, yet are applied in all contexts. This article advocates research on managerial innovations - new approaches to devise strategy and structure of tasks and units, modify the organization's management processes and administrative systems, motivate and reward organizational members, and enable organizational adaptation and change. We examine the conceptual development, generation and adoption processes, antecedents, and influences of managerial innovation on organizational conduct. By increasing an understanding of managerial innovation, this article aims to complement existing theories of innovation derived from the studies of technological innovations and thus help extend and advance theory and research on innovation process and outcome in organizations.

Abstract (sommario):
The article’s purpose is to conduct research on the evolution of innovative development theories of the national economy. The article used the methods of generalization, scientific abstraction, systemic and economic analysis. The article proves that there is no single approach to the definition of these concepts, which indicates their diversity and the need for further research in order to specify them; innovation is a final materialized product, technology or service obtained as a result of the activation of innovative processes at the enterprise, characterized by better characteristics and technological level compared to previous analogues; innovative activity and process are closely related to scientific developments and research, in particular fundamental and applied; innovative activity involves the dissemination of innovations and the results of scientific and technical progress in order to meet the new needs of society, this type of activity is also risky, it involves the involvement of a large number of resources at all stages of the creation, testing and final implementation of the innovation. In many scientists researches, innovative activity is studied mostly in connection with innovations, the innovation process, since most scientists first define and conduct research on the concept of “innovation”. However, these concepts are different in their meaning. Innovative activity, in contrast to the innovative process, is a narrower concept, as it involves the practical application and implementation of innovative, scientific and intellectual potential in the business process, with the aim of obtaining a new competitive product in the production process that will better satisfy the demands and needs of consumers. The practical value of the article lies in the systematization of innovative development theories on the basis of studied sources and own considerations. Key words: innovation; innovation process, innovative development, theories of innovation, researchers.

Abstract (sommario):
This article examines whether hitherto marginalized actors, industries and innovations – such as women, services industries and service innovations – could be acknowledged by the use of a bottom-up approach in innovation research in a way that helps make public innovation support more inclusive. It is scrutinized whether the relation between context, organization and outcomes in publically financed innovation networks such as clusters and innovation systems serves to highlight how more inclusive innovation support could be designed. Four regional innovation networks promoting women’s entrepreneurship and innovation in Sweden are analyzed by a bottom-up approach, since while emphasizing decentralization and inclusion in theory, most innovation theories and policies are in practice characterized by a top-down approach, ascribing superiority to certain actors, industries and innovations while marginalizing others in a distinct – often gendered – pattern. The bottom-up approach makes it possible to expose that being a marginalized actor in public innovation support is related to the organization of entrepreneurial types of innovation systems, based on contacts established ad hoc and resources gathered from scratch, making a wider range of actors, industries and innovations relevant than in institutional types of innovation systems favored in prevalent public innovation support. By acknowledging both types of innovation systems, more inclusive innovation policies could be designed and more nuanced innovation theories could be developed.

Objective: To understand how the governance structure between producers and slaughter cooperatives of specialty beef chain in Paraná, Brazil, influence innovation and the remuneration of the value generated.Methodology: Semi-structured interviews were performed with 17 agents from two cooperatives and producers in the specialty beef chain in Paraná, Brazil. Originality: This study seeks to fill a gap in the literature by combining innovation and efficiency theories to assess how agents organize themselves enable them to create and remunerate the value generated.Main results: This study shows that producers and cooperatives organize themselves in a hybrid form involving verbal agreements which enable innovations due to information exchanges between producers. However, possible failures in value distribution stem from the non-remuneration of quality attributes, which may discourage innovations and the performance of the chain.Managerial contributions: Despite failures, cooperatives promote innovation and are a viable alternative for producers to compete in the market. Incentives can mitigate the risks associated with the observed failures. This study provides insights for private and public actions to encourage the formation of these arrangements and to improve the coordination of innovation subsystems.Theoretical contributions: Since efficiency theories underestimate innovation, our analysis employed efficiency and innovation theories, contributing to the better understanding of subsystems which depend on innovation to produce specialty products.

Abstract (sommario):
There is a need to ensure the effective transfer and diffusion of successful policy innovations that facilitate sustainable development in the Middle East region. However, to date there has been limited research on policy innovation in the Middle East region through theories such as policy diffusion, with most studies focused on North America and Western Europe. The following short essay represents an attempt to highlight this shortfall, stimulate discussion on what key factors could facilitate policy innovation in the Middle East, and promote further studies to address this imbalance. This is a theoretical study that primarily examines three theories that address the spread of policy innovation between governments: policy diffusion, policy laboratories, and borrowing strength. These theories are applied to different factors that influence policy innovation (geographic proximity, political ideology, culture, and networks and individuals) considered within the context of the Middle East to assess their relevance and applicability. Based on the application of these theories and key factors, the essay proposes three novel hypotheses for policy innovation, which are linked to the different factors. Each hypothesis identifies an area where it is expected that policy innovation would occur, if the theories hold true in a Middle Eastern Context. The essay contains an accompanying call to test these hypotheses within the region. It is expected that further studies in this area will be able to both test and build on the proposed hypotheses to determine the applicability of current (Western) theories to explain policy innovation in the Middle East and move towards a more comprehensive and targeted theory of policy in this region.

Abstract (sommario):
The article summarizes scientific knowledge about the innovative development of the economy. Currently, there are conflicting views in scientific papers on the conditions for the emergence and spread of innovation, especially in times of economic crisis. Therefore, the aim of this study is to reveal the views of scientists on the role of innovation in economic development and substantiating the principles of forming areas of financial support for innovation to overcome the effects of economic crises and strengthen the country's competitiveness. The study of the main fundamental theories of innovative development allowed to summarize the views of scientists on the relationship between economic development and innovation processes. Based on the theoretical views of scientists, two paradigms of post-industrial society have been identified, which are based on understanding the relationship between the nature of cycles of economic development and innovation, as well as the presentation of innovative development as a factor of economic growth. The analyzed theories of innovative development reveal innovations as an integral factor of economic growth of any society. The main reason for the cyclical nature of economic development according to the theories of innovation is the uneven nature of the introduction of innovations, which causes periodic violations of economic equilibrium. The study of these patterns makes it possible to justify the direction of innovation processes and develop a financial mechanism for their stimulation. Today, innovation should become a top priority in efforts to accelerate the economic development of states, which will ensure the implementation of intensified investment processes and the implementation of ways out of the crisis. That is why, in our opinion, the study and use of theories of innovative development in times of economic shocks should be the basis for developing a long-term innovative model of economic development.

Abstract (sommario):
I offer an analysis of the concept of scientific innovation. When research is innovated, highly noveland usefulelements of investigation begin to spread through a scientific community, resulting from a process which is neither due to blind chance nor to necessity, but to a minimal use of rationality. This, however, leads to tension between two claims: (1) scientific innovation can be explained rationally; (2) no existing account of rationality explains scientific innovation. There are good reasons to maintain (1) and (2), but it is difficult for both claims to be accepted simultaneously by a rational subject. In particular, I argue that neither standard nor bounded theories of rationality can deliver a satisfactory explanation of scientific innovations.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper unifies two apparently competing theories of information systems (IS) implementation by developing a model in which the contributions of innovation characteristics and implementation process theories are contingent upon the implementation context. To do this, we identify the different assumptions regarding the implementation context implicit in the two theories and, based on these differences, develop a contingent model within which to integrate the two theories. A partial test of the model within one particular context is reported using data collected from the end-users of an IS innovation introduced in a State health system in Australia. As hypothesized, we find that, within the context, characterized by high individual level impact and low group level impact, the contribution of innovation characteristics to implementation success is higher than that of implementation process.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the research and substantiation of the author 's theory of interaction in innovation processes. The author proved the need to revise the provisions of modern theories in modern conditions, as they complicate the possibilities and lead to inefficiency of use for the implementation of innovation processes at different levels. The development of the innovation process was determined by the indicators of interaction between the stages and participants of innovation. This article examines the basic theories of economic and personal development, which are present in the information field of management and innovation. The author investigated the theoretical positions of theories of personal development, theories of innovative development, theories of interactions and theories of partnership, theories of innovative cooperation. The main theoretical contributions of these theories were analyzed, as well as the possibility of their use in the formation of the author's theory of interaction in innovation processes. Based on the analysis and research, the author identified the provisions of the theory of interaction in innovation processes, which take into account the paradigm shift of the innovation process, the evolution of models of innovation processes, types of interactions in innovation processes. The author's theory contains definitions of postulates, hypotheses and expected results. The developed theory can be used as a basis for ensuring the innovative development of regions and countries, provided the formation and implementation of an effective mechanism for establishing interaction between participants in the innovation process.

Abstract (sommario):
Theories on categorization have led to numerous technical innovations. Starting with artificial intelligence and neural models, scientists have leveraged psychological theories to drive forward innovative technology. More recently, software companies and Internet firms have implemented high technology software developed from cognitive theory. One class of systems rooted in the philosophical tradition stresses the importance of explanation and function. Another focuses on feature similarity and rule-based reasoning. Both approaches have had modest success and solve fundamental problems, but neither has achieved the higher-levels of categorization found in humans. The current paper critically analyzes the various theories of categorization and their collective impact on recent technology innovations.

Abstract (sommario):
Many innovations result from firms following theories and models of innovation such as disruptive innovation, blue ocean innovation, etc. Yet, there are many other innovations that are not developed through these models and rather stem from technological pushes and research and development efforts. The commercial success of these innovations is contingent upon existence of a good fit between the technological innovation and the accompanying business model. To date, this fit has been mostly sought through trials and errors. In this paper, we develop a framework for analytically choosing and aligning two important components of the business model — value proposition and target market — to fit the technological innovations. We illustrate the framework using case examples of products in the market.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Disruptive technology and innovation represent complex conflicts in nature. This paper aims to present an analytical review of the heterogeneity and conflicts that exist in the disruptive technology/innovation between the eastern and western countries using Chinese high-speed railways to illustrate disruptive innovation. Design/methodology/approach The emerging economy brings about other theoretical and practical conflicts. Qualitative analysis is conducted on Chinese high-speed railways to assess the validity of innovation characteristics using Professor Clayton M. Christensen’s theories of disruptive technology/innovation and conflict. The authors explore the conflicts that can accompany the introduction of disruptive technologies in the current platform and how appropriately this specific context can lessen these conflicts. Findings The study revealed that Christensen’s theories could be applied 100per cent to the Chinese context if the western disruptive innovation theory can meet the practical requirements of Chinese disruptive technology/innovation. Qualitative analysis showed that Chinese high-speed railways had experienced greater success with disruptive innovation mechanism. The authors conclude that while the Chinese market is critical in shaping the kind of innovations that are emerging there, many disruptive technologies/innovations in China have their roots in the low-end market and new market. Implications for theory and practice are discussed. Originality/value There exists a research gap in the literature on the Chinese context. Conflict of disruptive technology and innovation within China and the characteristics of the Chinese high-speed railway prompt further research for scholars and practitioners.

What I call the military realist perspective drives this doctrinal innovation. Through a case study of change and continuity in US Army doctrine under President Kennedy, this article challenges bureaucratic, military cultural, and civilian realist theories of military innovation. Military realism provides a powerful explanation of a hard case, while the other theories struggle with what should be an easy case.

The creation of innovations in enterprises is a topic that has a firm place in the scientific literature, and the authors describe several procedures and theories of the functioning of the innovation process in enterprises. One part of the innovation process is decision-making. In the article, attention is paid to the results of research on the decision-making process as an important and integral part of the innovation process. The elements of the decision-making process and their impact on innovation represent an area of possible exploration and development of theories on decision-making in the innovation process. It is here that we have proposed a methodology for decision-making in the innovation process. The management of innovation processes, of which decision-making is an important part, provides multiple points of error for enterprises. Errors are experienced by enterprises due to a lack of information or its misuse, the influence of communication and time, and also the lack of experience of employees. The aim of this paper is to highlight the different decision-making criteria and approaches to innovation activities in Slovak enterprises within the framework of the developed methodology and survey results.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Research on BIM adoption has been linked to different theories of innovation underpinned by diverging assumptions. Diffusion of Innovations theory (DIT), for example, assumes the innovation adoption process is linear, while Actor-Network Theory (ANT) assumes innovation is dynamic and non-linear. However, limited work has been done to compare the often hidden assumptions of different innovation theories, and to explore how well they suit the BIM process. This study has two objectives: (1) to conduct a comparative analysis of the contrasting conceptual foundations of DIT and ANT and (2) to build and test two early-stage analytical toolkits using the conceptual apparatus of each theory, allowing users to examine the experiences of adopter organisations using two lenses. The toolkits this study offers were developed by moving iteratively between key theoretical concepts and qualitative interview data from a single US-based owner organisation, a case study of an early adopter of BIM. The study has two contributions. The first, a theoretical finding, is that DIT is better suited for analysing innovations that are material, stabilised and thus “closed” in early stages, while ANT is better suited for innovations that are dynamic and iteratively (re)created. The second is a set of preliminary insights for practice.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Introduction. The article examines theoretical aspects of management of innovation and investment activities of enterprises. Purpose. The purpose of the article is to highlight the evolution of the development of theoretical foundations of the innovation and investment activity management at the enterprises, to generalize scientific approaches to the interpretation of the essence of the term "innovation and investment activity" and to clarify the content of its management. Results. The lack of unified scientific approaches to understanding the essence and content of management of innovation and investment activities of enterprises is revealed. It is noted that modern theories and practice of management of innovation and investment activities of enterprises were formed as a result of the historical development of management science, theories of investments and innovations. The historical phasing of the evolutionary development of investment theory is presented and a brief description of the stages of development of these theories is provided. Scientific approaches regarding interpretation of the term "innovative investment activity" have been analyzed. It has been revealed that scientists usually define innovation and investment activity as a complex of two interrelated types of enterprise activity – innovation and investment. It has been established that scientists are persistently interested in studying the problems of innovation and investment activity of enterprises and the presence of various approaches to understanding it as an object of management. The author's approach to defining the term "management of innovation and investment activities of enterprises" is proposed. It is concluded that the evolution of scientific approaches to understanding the essence and content of management of innovation and investment activities of enterprises occurs in relation to the development of management science, investment and innovation theories. Conclusions. In addition, the vast majority of researchers consider management of innovation and investment activity without a clear definition of its essence, objects, subjects objects and functions. It is emphasized that in modern conditions, ensuring the effective operation of enterprises involves marketing orientation of the management of innovative and investment activities of enterprises, active use of marketing resources, technologies and tools to achieve social and economic goals of their activities.

Abstract (sommario):
High technology innovation performance relies on a skilful utilization of human resources. The main purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of interpreted outcome and process uncertainties on the effective management of human resources for technology innovation. This is achieved through an insider-outsider based case study approach of three medical device innovations with varying degrees of radicalness. Findings suggest that uncertainties in process and outcome strongly influence what constitutes effective management of human resources for technology innovation. Findings also offer insights into when certain innovation theories hold, and suggestions on how to manage human resources and technology innovation under various conditions of uncertainty.

Abstract (sommario):
Effective institutional and technological development are key to governance in smart cities. This study investigates the fundamental complexities of institutional and technological innovations in smart cities. A city’s innovation capabilities depend significantly on its technology and implementation capacity. This study suggests that institutional and technological innovation serve a role that moderates the relationships between smart city governance, stakeholder satisfaction, and crime rate. Multiple regression models were developed by surveying 496 Pakistani citizens with a questionnaire. Using stakeholders and innovation theories, analyzing the relationships between smart governance, stakeholder satisfaction, and city crime rates reveals a moderating role of institutional and technological innovation. The findings showed that institutional and technological innovations have strengthened the stakeholder satisfaction level while weakening the crime rate in a smart city.

Abstract (sommario):
We investigate the extent to which product innovation moderates the relationship between capabilities and competitive advantage among small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Using resource-based and capabilities theories, we examine capabilities as organisational routines, focusing on job rotation and multi-skilling. We examine competitive advantage by using logistic regression to assess the probability of top performance in productivity relative to most other firms in the same industry. Considering the path-dependence in developing capabilities and innovation, we use a longitudinal sample of 300 UK manufacturing SMEs in traditional and high-technology industries to evaluate the effects of innovating and using capabilities continuously over time. The results suggest that firms using job rotation or multi-skilling and introducing product innovations consistently from 2002 through 2004 are more likely to be top performers in 2004. The findings support a theoretical model according to which the association between capabilities and competitive advantage is moderated by innovation.

Abstract (sommario):
Humanitarian innovation has rapidly emerged to become central to discussions about the future of humanitarianism. Innovation practices are framed as a means by which the humanitarian community can identify the paradigm shift that it needs to survive in a rapidly changing world. However, this framing is based on a misunderstanding of economic theories of innovation and particularly of the nature of humanitarian economics. The lack of both a true market and a profit mechanism in the humanitarian industry means that innovations can be generated but will never be sustained. Unless this obstacle is addressed – perhaps through emerging networked approaches to economic activity – humanitarian innovation will continue to be a dead end.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractInnovation is essential for agricultural and economic development, especially in today's rapidly changing global environment. While farmers have been recognized as innovation generators, many innovation studies continue to consider them as recipients or adopters of externally promoted innovations only. Based on household data from Ghana, this study, in contrast, investigates the innovation-generating behavior among rural farmers. Inspired by two innovation theories—induced innovation and innovation systems—we specifically focus on how to build the capacity of farmers to generate innovations. Controlling for selection bias, we show that participation in farmer field fora (FFF), a participatory extension approach, can play a positive role in strengthening farmers' innovation-generating capacity. Specifically, we show that FFF participants have about 27% higher probability of generating innovations than non-participants, and FFF participation appears to increase the number of innovation-generating practices implemented by a farm household by about 49%. However, we do not find significant spillover effects of FFF on the innovation-generating capacity of non-participants, which has implications for the cost-effectiveness of the FFF program. The results also indicate that education and risk preference are important drivers of farmers' innovations. We conclude that policies for the generation of innovations among farmers should focus on building innovation capacity through institutional arrangements that permit interactions and learning between stakeholders.

Abstract (sommario):
Do mergers raise substantial additional issues when the parties have significant innovation programs? To answer this, we examine the merger-related efficiencies that arise only with substantial innovation, arguing that innovation-intensive mergers should be treated more leniently than mergers without this dynamic dimension. We provide guidance on evidence that might determine the magnitude of such efficiencies. Next, we argue that where innovation is “directed” towards a product market, dealing with product line overlap should allay concerns about postmerger innovation. If research is not directed, we argue that theories of harm linked to the product market are unconvincing. Instead, one should look at theories of harms in the innovation market, which stem from the advantage in being first to innovate. Such first-mover advantages can be rooted in patent protection, switching costs, or network effects. This approach helps explain some of the remedies recently imposed on transactions such as Dow-Dupont and Bayer-Monsanto.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In the present-day education environment, requiring managerial flexibility in assessing ongoing changes, innovation becomes a prerequisite for effective management, and professional and psychological readiness of managers to apply management innovation – an indicator of managerial potential. Management innovation is today the “bottleneck” of educational management theory and practice. There are no theoretical models that are directly related to managerial innovation; technological innovations take priority in the practice of educational management; incorrect interpretation of innovations blunts their effectiveness. The school's competitive advantage today is not determined primarily by capital accumulation, but by the ability of management to initiate, appreciate and use changes, to learn faster than the rest from the experience of the changes. New theories of growth emphasize that it is the development of innovations that is an engine of sustainable educational growth. These circumstances determine management innovations as the domain that is the most in-demand for the development of education under the conditions of today.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper suggests (i) that while work on animal innovation has made good progress in understanding some of the proximate mechanisms and selective regimes through which innovation emerges, it has somewhat neglected the role of the social environment of innovation; a neglect manifest in the fact that innovation counts are almost always counts of resource-acquisition innovations; the invention of social tools is rarely considered. The same is true of many experimental projects, as these typically impose food acquisition tasks on their experimental subjects. (ii) That neglect is important, because innovations often pose collective action problems; the hominin species were technically innovative because they were also socially adaptable. (iii) In part for this reason, there remains a disconnect between research on hominin innovation and research on animal innovation. (iv) Finally, the paper suggests that there is something of a disconnect between the theoretical work on innovation in hominin evolution (based on theories of cultural evolution) and the experimental tradition on human innovation. That disconnect is largely due to the theoretical work retreating from strong claims about the proximate mechanisms of human cultural accumulation.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Purpose: Against the backdrop of clear paradoxes and confusion in prevailing innovation policies, the contours of a new innovation paradigm, as elaborated in this paper, are becoming visible and causing social innovation to grow in importance. Originality/gap/relevance/implications: However, innovation research is still lacking sustained and systematic analysis of social innovation, its theories, characteristics, and impacts. The purpose of this paper is to focus on a theoretically sound concept of social innovation as a precondition for an integrated theory of socio-technological innovation in which social innovation is more than an appendage of technological innovation. Key methodological aspects: The paper presents first empirical results of the global research project "SI-DRIVE: Social Innovation - Driving Force of Social Change" and introduces key findings of a global mapping of social innovation initiatives. This quantitative mapping is based upon 1.005 social innovation initiatives. Summary of key results: The mapping underlines the broad range of actors involved in the mapped initiatives and thereby confirms the need for a cross-sectoral concept of social innovation. It reveals a high diversity of social needs and societal challenges addressed by the initiatives as well as a high dependency on networks. The results also show that 90% of the initiatives are scaling. Key considerations/conclusions: Finally, on the basis of these empirical results, a recourse to Gabriel Tarde's social theory allows us to widen a perspective which was narrowed to economic and technological innovations by Schumpeter and after him by the sociology of technology, and to include social innovations in all their diversity.

Abstract (sommario):
In the early stages of the design process, an engineer sets the geometry of the structure. The decisions made about the layout of the structure will determine the overall efficiency that can be achieved and the magnitude of the forces that must be accommodated. For example, the deflection of a truss can actually be decreased by removing material if a geometry is created that has a shorter total load path. This paper presents concepts and methodologies for creating and understanding efficient geometries. It starts with a review of the 19th- and 20th-century load path theories of Rankine, Maxwell, Cremona and Michell. It then combines their insights with current topology optimization and shape-finding tools as a means of exploring how engineers can create structural geometries that improve the behavior and reduce the tonnage of their designs. Several examples of classical theoretical solutions are explored along with their application to new designs.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractA new phase of energy transition makes auxiliary technologies such as energy storage and other flexibility options more important. Economic policy that aims to steer this transition needs to grasp the complex system dynamics underlying energy and society. This conceptual article gives an overview of energy technology innovation theories that exemplify the growing importance of flexibility for electricity usage. First, the article presents different conceptualizations of technology innovation and diffusion. Second, how energy systems are embedded in physical infrastructures and social power relations is shown with a brief history of electricity in contemporary industrialized societies. Third, energy innovation is discussed in context of challenges of the upcoming energy transition. Fourth, energy technology innovations are further contextualized in light of insights from political economy and energy social sciences. Finally, the discussed approaches are synthesized to amend the holistic technology innovation system approach for studying energy technology innovations such as energy storage.

Abstract (sommario):
Many public health courses include content on behavior change theories, including the Diffusion of Innovation Theory (DoI). In DoI, innovations are adopted based on 5 characteristics: the innovation's relative advantage of what came before, its compatibility with a person or group's culture, the complexity of the innovation, whether the innovation can be tried before fully adopted, and whether or not the effects of adopting this innovation can be observed in others. This paper describes the application of the public health response to COVID-19 in the US as a dynamic example with which to teach DoI theory in the context of an undergraduate program planning and evaluation class. Because students were forced into an online environment when essential businesses closed in an effort to ‘flatten’ the coronavirus curve, we describe the unique way the outbreak could be used in an organic online discussion in which students could use their own current experiences to extrapolate to the DoI constructs. While not done as a formal "lesson plan", we describe the students' engagement, provide commentary of their application of DoI to the COVID-19 response, and suggest how more formal exercises could be incorporated into undergraduate public health curriculum.
