Testo completoThe thesis investigates the physical phenomena arising from the interaction between a Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI) engine intake and the fuselage under off-design conditions for a commercial aircraft. A buried BLI intake geometry on a flat plate is employed. The study involves both numerical and experimental analyses, characterizing the steady and unsteady flow behavior. The predictive capability of various CFD turbulence models, RANS and hybrid RANS/LES, is assessed and compared with wind tunnel test data. The flow distortion at the Aerodynamic Interface Plane (AIP), the main drawback of using a BLI engine, is quantified. Different distortion criteria used in the industry are examined, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. Finally, the results of this thesis provide a deeper understanding of the flow behavior of this type of configuration, as well as the potential and limitations of the numerical methods applied. The results of the thesis may also serve as a basis for reflection on the use of active flow control to optimize the benefit of the BLI concept while respecting the multiple design constraints, especially related to the engine intake operation outside cruise conditions and the physical integration of the engine on the aircraft

Testo completoThe goal of this PhD thesis is to optimise a Reynolds stress model. Some constraints are applied to the length scale transport equation in order to take into account the effect of a pressure gradient on the structure of the boundary layer. This leads us to revisit the analysis of the behaviour of turbulence models at the vicinity of a free stream edge. The behaviour is different from what has been assumed before as the expected power law solution is contained in a more complex solution. This study proved that the constraints for the free stream edge are incompatible with the other constraints. The intermittent character of the free stream edge is taken into account in order to unlink the behaviour of the model at the free stream edge from its behaviour in fully turbulent regions. The model deduced from this analysis fulfils all the constraints and is calibrated on free shear flows and boundary layers where the constraints significantly improve the quality of results
