Abstract (sommario):
Text-based conversational agents (CAs) are widely deployed across a number of daily tasks, including information retrieval. However, most existing agents follow a default design that disregards user needs and preferences, ultimately leading to a lack of usage and an unsatisfying user experience. To better understand how CAs can be designed in order to lead to effective system use, we deduced relevant design requirements from both literature and 13 user interviews. We built and tested a question-answering, text-based CA for an information retrieval task in an education scenario. Results from our experimental test with 41 students indicate that following a user-centered design has a significant positive effect on enjoyment and trust in a CA as opposed to deploying a default CA. If not designed with the user in mind, CAs are not necessarily more beneficial than traditional question-answering systems. Beyond practical implications for effective CA design, this paper points towards key challenges and potential research avenues when deploying social cues for CAs.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop a search engine dedicated to image retrieval in a bilingual (French and English) context. This paper presents the first phase of user testing that was carried out to validate and refine SINCERITY, the new search device. Design/methodology/approach – This first phase of the search engine testing involved a small group of image searchers (10 French-speaking and 10 English-speaking participants) who were asked to retrieve a sample of images (30) using the new tool. A questionnaire was also developed to compile the comments of the users. Findings – The results of this first phase of testing revealed that even though image indexing was sometimes problematic, the participants did not encounter major difficulties retrieving images with SINCERITY. Comments and suggestions received will be taken into consideration to improve the performance and aesthetics of the search engine. Originality/value – Once fully operational, SINCERITY will allow users to search images in an attractive and user-friendly manner. Eventually, other types of images (documentary and artistic) will be added to the image database linked to the image search engine, as well as other languages.

Abstract (sommario):
Background / Context A thorough understanding of the information-seeking behaviors of specific disciplines, as well as distinct user groups within a discipline, is fundamental to the process of development of disciplinary informatics. Significant research has been conducted, largely by library and information science scholars across a range of disciplines, but none that has focused primarily on education. Existing studies of information-seeking behavior have not been communicated to education scholars and professionals. The lack of consensus on the nature, execution, and application of educational research and the fundamental disconnect between scholars and practitioners further complicate the question. Users of education literature are diverse, including a spectrum of scholars, professionals, practitioners, parents, and the general public. Patterns of information seeking and application must be better understood to successfully develop a structure for education informatics. Purpose The purpose of this article is to bring to the education community a higher level of awareness of the overarching dynamics of information structure, organization, and retrieval, as well as recognition of the relationship of those dynamics to the evolving nature, definition, and execution of education research, to the development of education informatics. Research Design This article consists of a literature review and synthesis of research, analysis of distinct user populations, and an issues analysis with recommendations. Conclusions Exacerbated by failed communication opportunities across all segments of the producer/user community, and in spite of legislative mandates for data-driven and scientifically based research, there remains a void in the collective ability to converse across subsets of the user community and to translate research into practice. Practitioners need to learn basic research design, concepts, methodologies, and assessment measures; means to interpret results, validity, and bias; and ways to understanding limitations of the study. Practitioners also must be able to incorporate findings into their practice. They must do teacher research that is collaborative, replicable, shared, and reviewable and become both effective producers and critical consumers of research. Academic researchers need to focus on the complex issues that teachers face on a daily basis; explain why questions are being asked and conducted in a particular way; present findings in a manner more accessible to practitioners; and demonstrate how findings can be made generalizable. Education informatics has the potential to be the dynamic that helps translate research into practice to facilitate the application of research findings within the context of individualized environments, to provide the common ground for collaborative work, and to create the necessary synergy between theory and practice.

Abstract (sommario):
A large horticultural database and an electronic retrieval system for extension education programs were developed using compact disk-read only memory (CD-ROM) and World Wide Web (WWW) as the medium for information delivery. Object-oriented database techniques were used to organize the information. Conventional retrieval techniques including hypertext, full text searching, and expert systems were integrated into a complete package for accessing information stored in the database. A multimedia user interface was developed to provide a variety of capabilities including computer graphics and high resolution digitized images. Information for the CD-ROM was gathered from extension publications that were tagged using the standard generalized markup language (SGML)-based document markup language (International Standards Organization, 1986). Combining funds from the state legislator with grants from the USDA and other institutions, the CD-ROM system has been implemented in all 67 county extension offices in Florida and is available to the public as a for-sale CD-ROM. Public access is also available to most of the database through the WWW.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper a new set of descriptors appropriate for image indexing and retrieval is proposed. The proposed descriptors address the tremendously increased need for efficient content-based image retrieval (CBIR) in many application areas such as the Internet, biomedicine, commerce and education. These applications commonly store image information in large image databases where the image information cannot be accessed or used unless the database is organized to allow efficient storage, browsing and retrieval. To be applicable in the design of large image databases, the proposed descriptors are compact, with the smallest requiring only 23 bytes per image. The proposed descriptors' structure combines color and texture information which are extracted using fuzzy approaches. To evaluate the performance of the proposed descriptors, the objective Average Normalized Modified Retrieval Rank (ANMRR) is used. Experiments conducted on five benchmarking image databases demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed descriptors in outperforming other state-of-the-art descriptors. Also, a Auto Relevance Feedback (ARF) technique is introduced which is based on the proposed descriptors. This technique readjusts the initial retrieval results based on user preferences improving the retrieval score significantly. An online demo of the image retrieval system img(Anaktisi) that implements the proposed descriptors can be found at .

Abstract (sommario):
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present the third of three inter‐related experiments investigating the use and usability of e‐books in Higher Education based on experiments conducted at the University of Strathclyde. This study has looked in greater detail at user interactions with e‐books for reference purposes by focusing on searching and browsing tasks using three search tools: back‐of the‐book index (BoBI), table of contents (ToC) and full text search (FTS).Design/methodology/approachThis study was carried out by subject‐specific users and using a between‐subjects approach. The target population was MSc and research students in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, at the University of Strathclyde and involved a total of 45 responses.FindingsThe study found that a BoBI was more efficient compared to a ToC and FTS tool for finding information in an e‐book environment. A BoBI was found to perform the best for accurately finding relevant content in e‐books. The usability evaluation also found that a BoBI was more useful compared to a ToC for finding information in an e‐book environment.Research limitations/implicationsThe study was focused only on the usability of e‐books, and in particular on retrieval performance, user satisfaction and preferences regarding BoBI, ToC and FTS, and not on other features such as the user interface. The e‐book usability evaluation was constrained in so far as the e‐books used were: non‐fiction; in the domain of information retrieval; e‐books that already had BoBIs with hyperlinks from the BoBI to the text; e‐books that had ToCs with hyperlinks; e‐books that had FTS tools; and e‐books that were available in PDF format.Practical implicationsThe study is important in gaining a better understanding of the retrieval performance of three search tools (BoBI, ToC and FTS) for browsing for relevant, and searching for specific, information in e‐books. This will be of value for designing better e‐books and access systems.Originality/valueThe strengths and novelty of this study are the methodology that was used, the comprehensive inter‐comparison of tools, and the size of the population. The findings have supported empirically – through an assessment of the performances of BoBIs and ToCs – the need for an enhanced library catalogue system in order to improve users’ browsing and searching capabilities for relevant book content.

Abstract (sommario):
Information about the geographical location of universities is necessary for graduates of Senior High School who want to continue their education to a university. Most of the graduate students do not know the location of the universities since the geographical location of Google Maps is less clear and less precise. Therefore, the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based on Information Retrieval (IR) is expected to facilitate the graduate students to know the exact location of the university. In this paper, IR-based GIS application is developed by using web programming. The web is used as a search engine when someone wants to find a college. The application shows the map and information of the college in the area according to the query of the user. Naive Bayes algorithm is used to classify the user query and locate the query on the map. Based on our prototype, the application is promising to be implemented for the student.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This article aims to examine how the interactions and perceptions of users from a defined domain, i.e. science education, vary across different groups of teachers while retrieving video. Given the prevalence of digital resources in use in education today, it is critical to assess users’ perspectives and experiences for retrieving information across different contexts and individual user groups. Design/methodology/approach Interactive search experiments with 28 users were performed. A pre-experiment questionnaire collected the demographic information used to form groups for comparison in the present study. Users attempted six experimenter-developed topics using a prototype video retrieval system; experimental measures were recorded, including all actions, completion rates, errors and durations. Users rated their experiences and levels of satisfaction with different aspect of the system after each search topic. Data analyses included mean comparisons across the different groups. Findings A variety of influences emerged from the results, including significant variations among teachers’ interactions, levels of satisfaction and expectations across different groups of users. Research limitations/implications Understanding the interactions and perceptions when retrieving digital video provides insights for information professionals on how to better support the needs of different users. If systems are not taking into account users and context, there can be a mismatch between the needs of users and interactive systems, which can lead to low perceptions and further underuse of digital resources. Originality/value Although similar influences on digital libraries have been analysed in other contexts, they have not been directly assessed, as they specifically pertain to experiences with and perceptions of video.

Abstract (sommario):
PurposeThis paper aims to argue that different types of uncertainty are associated with information seeking and retrieval (IS&R), and that, with the proliferation of new and different search tools, channels and sources, uncertainty, whether positive or negative, continues to be a significant factor in the search process. The paper aims to report on one part of an ongoing research that aims to study correlations among a series of information‐seeking activities and information‐seeking problems that cause uncertainty amongst users in academic environment.Design/methodology/approachAn online questionnaire is used to collect data from users in the higher education sector. Quantitative analysis is carried out on the data collected through an online questionnaire distributed through eight online mailing lists comprising a total of 3,607 registered users. A total of 668 responses are returned from three categories of respondents: academic staff, research staff and research students. Pearson's correlation coefficient is used to study correlation among the activities and problems that cause uncertainty in IS&R.FindingsThis research shows that uncertainty may occur in course of a number of information‐seeking activities, and may also be created because of some problems associated with information seeking. Some of the activities and problems that caused uncertainty have significant correlations. There is also a correlation between information‐seeking activities and gender and disciplines, though there is little correlation between information‐seeking activities and age, information and communication technology (ICT) skills, and user categories. There is also a correlation between information‐seeking problems and ICT skills, gender and user categories, but there is less correlation between information‐seeking problems and age. Information‐seeking activities and information‐seeking problems that cause uncertainty have a significant correlation with disciplines and gender. Furthermore, it is noted that information‐seeking activities caused less uncertainty for users in the discipline of computer and information sciences compared to the other chosen disciplines such as business and management, and arts and humanities.Originality/valueThis research for the first time aimed to study which information‐seeking activities and problems cause uncertainty and how they are correlated.

Abstract (sommario):
With the development of e-commerce, websites such as Amazon and eBay have become very popular. Users post reviews of products and rate the helpfulness of reviews on these websites. Reviews written by a user and reviews rated by a user reflect the user's interests and disinterest. Thus, they are very useful for user profiling. In this study, the authors explore users' reviews and ratings of reviews for personalized searching and propose a review-based user profiling method. To satisfy a user's basic information needs, expressed in the form of a query, they also propose a priority-based result ranking strategy. For evaluation, they conduct experiments on a real-life data set. The experimental results show that their method can significantly improve retrieval quality.

Abstract (sommario):
Cloud computing also offers several services to its clients in departments such as education, healthcare, military, government, and sports. The storage of each service, which keeps a huge amount of electronic data in a cloud database, is one of the services provided by cloud infrastructure. In the main cloud, this type computes massive amounts of private data. As a result, information retrieval solutions that are both effective and efficient are required. When the server deletes the lost data and cannot transmit any information to the client, the recovery method's main goal is to assist the user in collecting data from each server backup. Users can benefit from cloud computing by storing data, accessing data from anywhere, and retrieving data at any time. As data on the cloud is generated at such a quick rate, speed is one of the most important aspects of cloud computing. It's simple to save files in the cloud and then retrieve it again. However, the difficult problem is to safely store and retrieve data from the cloud. We suggested a way for securely storing data in the cloud utilizing encryption and decryption methods in this work. We also employed a compression module to compress data before putting it in the cloud.

Abstract (sommario):
Electronic information retrieval is becoming an increasing trend (most notably in higher education) due to its cost effectiveness and ability to manage large quantities of information. As large differences in the user population often give rise to differing requirements between users of information retrieval systems, an insight into individual searching behaviour is important. This has been widely recognised by writers such as Shniederman (1986) and Thimbleby (1990). The electronic library will be significant in changing the role of educational libraries. Research into individual differences and search behaviour within the electronic library environment is essential if Electronic Library Systems (ELS) are to work effectively. Sources of individual difference include age, gender, subject knowledge, personality and learning style. An ELS can be defined as : "A system designed for the provision and management of information for the purposes of teaching, learning and research in which the full-text of materials is held in electronic form. Its adaptability and cost-effectiveness allows the needs of individual institutions to be to met effectively." The primary aim of the research reported here is to assess the ability of ELINOR, an example ELS, to facilitate the information retrieval activities of different user groups when classified by learning style. ELINOR is an acronym for Electronic Library Information Online Retrieval. The ELINOR system comprises an image and text database of books, journals and course materials which can be directly accessed by students and staff via desktop workstations distributed across the various campuses of De Montfort University.

The information is vital for innovation, competition, and decision making. To date information gathering is no longer absolute from the library, nonetheless the information can be retrieved from all around the world through Internet technology. However, information searching is a tedious process. Knowledge has been identified in this paper as the important factor that affects the searching behaviour. User knowledge is measured by topic and search system understanding while searching behaviour is measured by the breadth and depth of the search query. Both knowledge reflects the true understanding of what and how to search. The breadth and depth of search query show the users' effort in completing the search. In this paper, the impact of user knowledge on search behaviour is accessed on the education domain. Final year undergraduate students were identified as the population that "grown with the web" as they are actively using the Internet to fulfil their study requirement. The findings show that user knowledge does have an impact on the search behaviour.

Abstract (sommario):
Students at the tertiary education level need the information to complete their assignments at the university. Information retrieval behavior among university students is interesting to study because it shows the ability of search techniques and the diversity of information needed. The researcher has extensively researched information-seeking behavior at this level of education. However, more needs to be explicitly performed on the information retrieval process conducted by engineering students. The purpose of the present study was to reveal engineering students' information retrieval behavior process when using information sources from online database websites through analysis the types of online database websites the students used as primary information sources, why the students used these websites, and identified the challenges in information seeking using online database websites. For this study, data were collected using an internet-based questionnaire distributed among students at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, ITS. The study results indicated that engineering students used search engines as the primary information source due to their richness and flexibility. In this case, we have found additional results regarding the patterns of presentation and the interactivity necessary to optimize the function of online database websites. Also, the study has found the challenges faced by students in retrieving information and how they overcome the situation by using different keywords.

Abstract (sommario):
The intelligent programming analysis system based on Internet has attracted more and more attention in the field of education management. The problem of how to flexibly master the application capabilities of intelligent programming and development tools, debugging and optimizing programs, and project deployment is becoming more and more serious. Based on the intelligent programming analysis method, this paper systematically introduces the research and design process of education management model and designs modules such as distributed parallel PhpDig, information analyzer, and information resource database. The system adopts client/middleware/server (C/M/S) three-tier architecture planning and design. The server-side carries the resource manager, the middleware carries the intelligent work tasks (information analyzer, resource collection agent), and the client implements user interaction and data representation solves the storage load problem of a large amount of data. The experimental results show that the semantic processing of search object attributes can improve the retrieval performance, and the retrieval rate and tolerance factor reach 87.6% and 0.041, respectively, which effectively promotes the integration of the analysis data on the chain level and the education system.

PurposeThe focus of this study is the development of effective user education programs that will enhance the use of electronic information resources (EIR) in an era of electronic information for the students of the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, which consequently could be adapted for students in other higher institutions of learning.Design/methodology/approachThis study was carried out during the first semester of the 2010/2011 academic session (November 2010 to February 2011), employing a survey method. The target population is postgraduate students (postgraduate diploma, Master's degree and Doctor of Philosophy students) of the seven colleges that run postgraduate programs at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. Of a total population of 330 postgraduate students, 250 postgraduate students were selected randomly using a purposive sampling technique since the student population was not evenly distributed across the colleges. Administration and retrieval of the questionnaire lasted for six weeks.FindingsThe findings of this study have shown that the user education program of Nimbe Adedipe Library is not adequate; the library provides more library orientation than bibliographic instruction and information literacy skills. It was also found that few of the students received training on EIR usage while an analysis of the open‐ended questions revealed that the students got to know how to use electronic resources through their own efforts, periodic training in the library, and through the efforts of some library staff and friends. It was also found that use of EIR has a great impact on the respondents' academic activities, as reflected in their responses, where the students agreed that their academic work would suffer without the use of EIR.Practical implicationsIt is the belief of the researchers that empirical research on the use of library resources is crucial for the design and implementation of user education programs.Originality/valueThe results of this study will be a meaningful addition to the literature of library and information science in the area of user studies.

<span lang="EN-US">Technology plays a major role in our daily lives. In healthcare, technology assists in treating and detecting diseases and can improve patients’ quality of life. Alzheimer’s disease patients are generally elderly people who suffer from disabilities in vision, hearing, speech, and movement. The disease is one of the most common types of dementia. This paper proposes a design for a mobile application with an adaptive user interface for Alzheimer’s patients based on an elderly model developed using grounded theory. The application aims to improve the patients’ quality of life and allow them to remain engaged in society. The design of the application is based on spaced retrieval therapy (SRT), a method that helps Alzheimer’s patients to recall specific pieces of important information. User-centered design method was used to design and build this application. In the requirements phase, a user model for elderly people was elicited based on a classification developed through grounded theory. The prototype for the proposed model was designed and developed considering the default user interfaces and the adaptive user interfaces. A test was conducted with 15 elderly Arab users. The participants were 50–74 years old with varying levels of education and experience with technology. The authors proposed a user model for elderly people containing all the design implications in terms of physical and cognitive changes. The results of testing with elderly Arab users supported the proposed user model in terms of colors, fonts, pictures, and symbols. However, there were problems with the menu design and color preferences.</span>

Abstract (sommario):
With the deepening of global economic integration, overseas Chinese education has attracted more and more attention. How to quickly and accurately retrieve resources that meet user's personalized needs has become a key issue in the recommendation model of overseas Chinese education. To solve this problem, a cloud synergetic recommendation model for overseas Chinese education is proposed in this paper. Firstly, a user vector space with fine granularity representation is constructed by introducing multi-knowledge source emotional metaphor information. Secondly, considering the synergetic interaction among various user features, we proposed a synergetic user group recognition method based on synergetic theory. Finally, in order to improve the efficiency of resource acquisition, a recommendation model of Chinese education based on cloud computing is presented. The model proposed in this paper has certain reference significance for overseas Chinese education and online learning model.

The need to retrieval specific information on videos and find complementary content in large databases has become notorious given the amount of media that are produced and stored at every moment. In this scenario, education also has encountered in the ease of production of novel instructional material a way to disseminate knowledge. On the other hand, it is not easy to retrieval such materials in large repositories. To expand the possibilities of the user to find resources of interest, this paper proposes an approach to identify similar resources in instructional resources repositories through the use of DBpedia categorizations. A benchmark composed by video lessons from Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa (Brazilian National Educational and Research Network) was used to evaluate the approach.

A multimedia user interface was developed to provide a variety of capabilities, including computer graphics and high-resolution digitized images. Information for the CD-ROM was gathered from extension publications that were tagged using the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) -based document markup language (International Standards Organization, 1986). Combining funds from the state legislator with grants from the USDA, and other institutions, the CD-ROM system has been implemented in all 67 county extension offices in Florida and is available to the public as a for sale CD-ROM. Public access is also available to most of the database through the WWW.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: A fundamental skill in education includes the ability to search for, evaluate, and synthesize information, and this cannot be underestimated in dental education. The aim of this study was to assess how dental students from Malaysia and Finland acquire scientific information and to compare their information retrieval skills. Methods: Fourth and fifth-year dental students from Malaysia and Finland were invited to participate. A self-administered structured questionnaire including items about the use of information sources, subjective assessment of literature retrieval skills and knowledge was used. Results: A total of 226 dental students participated in the survey: 131 from Malaysia and 95 from Finland. In both countries, the highest interest for data retrieval among students was found in the oral surgery specialty. The three most used sources of information among Malaysian students were personal lecture notes, dental textbooks, and colleagues; while Finnish students used colleagues, lecture notes, and current clinical guidelines. Students’ knowledge of evidence-based practice was inadequate in both student groups. Though the majority of participants reported that they had good or passable skills in literature retrieval, more students from Finland judged themselves to have at least good skills compared to those from Malaysia. Conclusion: Dental education in both countries includes information retrieval studies and mandatory research projects. However, students did not often use those sources that are considered essential in evidence-based dentistry. Universities should further develop educational and training interventions that guide students to use knowledge resources more effectively for critically appraising scientific evidence.

Abstract (sommario):
This article reports the method of enriching a thesaurus by differentiating the related term relationship with specific semantic relations and expanding related terms. It also tests the usefulness of an enriched thesaurus as a better question-answering tool and information retrieval aid based on users’ perceptions. A small portion of the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC) thesaurus was enriched, and two enriched mini-thesauri were compiled with different levels of detail. A total of 22 participants were recruited to test the usefulness of the three mini-thesauri for facilitating question-answering and information retrieval within the ERIC Abstracts of the EBSCOHost Database and on the Web using Google. The experimental results suggest that the enriched thesauri are better question-answering tools and information retrieval aids than the original thesaurus. The findings imply that thesauri enriched with semantic relations are useful in question-answering and modern information retrieval, although the role of the traditional thesaurus in modern information retrieval has diminished.

Abstract (sommario):
Educational resources are available in different repositories and on the web. For example, these resources are in the form of courses, tutorials, simulations, tests, etc., and are available on the web. And these resources are constantly increasing. In this electronic age, it is necessary to develop systems to help people to find what they want and particularly what is more suitable to their personal subject interest. Recommender systems can help professors, researchers, and students to find the best educational resources suitable for his/her profile. The “e”-course characteristics and user profiles have to be considered, while providing the recommendations. A system can be developed where users can express a subject query to satisfy their information needs. During this stage, user characters and preferences are not considered and all users get the same results for that query. When the characteristics like language and preferences like practical and demonstrations are considered, then the information retrieval process should be improved by personalization. The set of characteristics and preferences of each user has to be stored and to be matched with e-course characteristics. There might be some characteristics that may be expressed using fuzzy values. It would be discussed how to find electronic educational resources that are suitable to the needs and characteristics of a user based on the user’s preferences and educational resources available. So, the present article recommended a method of physical education online course resources based on collaborative filtering technology.

Abstract (sommario):
This article describes how with a non-formal education, a scholar has to choose courses among various domains to meet the research aims. In spite of this, the availability of large number of courses, makes the process of selecting the appropriate course a tedious, time-consuming, and risky decision, and the course selection will directly affect the performance of a scholar. The best approach to solve such problems and to produce desirable results is to use a “recommendation system.” Recommender systems at the core employ information retrieval techniques and the ongoing effort of such information retrieval systems is to deliver the most relevant information to the learner. Therefore, if a recommender system is able to recognize the intent and requirements that a user express in the form of queries, it can generate more valid recommendations. This article presents an N-Gram classification technique which can be used to generate course recommendations to scholars depend on the requirements and domain of interest. This way of personalization can improve the quality of research and learning experience by recommending courses which are otherwise overlooked by scholars, as it takes the time to go through the curriculum and finding the best possible match.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to show that uncertainty may be caused not only by a knowledge gap in the mind of a user with respect to a given subject or topic, but also by the various complexities associated with the information seeking and retrieval (IS&R) process in a digital environment. Design/methodology/approach – Both quantitative and qualitative studies were conducted to collect data from users in the higher education sector regarding whether or not they experienced uncertainty in relation to the IS&R process. Analysis: a correlation analysis was undertaken to establish whether there were any relationships between information-seeking activities and information-seeking problems. Findings – The findings of this research show that uncertainty existed at different stages of the IS&R process amongst users. It was established that uncertainty was caused by a number of information-seeking activities and information-seeking problems, and that such uncertainty could continue over the course of successive search sessions, leading to the proposal of a new model of uncertainty. Research limitations/implications – The proposed model of uncertainty should contribute to a better understanding of the issues related to IS&R in a digital environment. Practical implications – A number of benefits could be realised in systems design from the application of this model in terms of reducing the negative impact of uncertainty, while at the same time helping users to gain from the positive aspects of uncertainty in IS&R. Originality/value – The general consensus is that uncertainty is a mental state of users reflecting a gap in knowledge which triggers an IS&R process, and that the gap is reduced as relevant information is found, and thus that the uncertainty disappears as the search process concludes. However, in the present study it is argued that some form of uncertainty is always associated with some part of the IS&R process and that it also fluctuates throughout the IS&R process. Users may therefore feel uncertain at any stage of the IS&R process and this may be related to: the initial information need and expression of that need, the search process itself, including identification of relevant systems, services and resources; and the assessment of, and reaction to, the results produced by the search process. Uncertainty may be unresolved, or even increase, as the user progresses, often iteratively, through the IS&R process and may remain even after its completion, resulting in what may be called a persistent uncertainty. In other words, this research hypothesises that, in addition to the uncertainty that triggers the information search process (Wilson et al., 2000), users suffer from varying degrees of uncertainty at every stage of the information search and retrieval process, and that in turn, triggers different information-seeking behaviours.

Abstract (sommario):
SummaryBackground: An increasing amount of health education resources for patients and professionals are distributed via social media channels. For example, thousands of health education videos are disseminated via You-Tube. Often, tags are assigned by the disseminator. However, the lack of use of standardized terminologies in those tags and the presence of misleading videos make it particularly hard to retrieve relevant videos. Objectives: i) Identify the use of standardized medical thesauri (SNOMED CT) in You-Tube Health videos tags from preselected YouTube Channels and demonstrate an information technology (IT) architecture for treating the tags of these health (video) resources. ii) Investigate the relative percentage of the tags used that relate to SNOMED CT terms. As such resources may play a key role in educating professionals and patients, the use of standardized vocabularies may facilitate the sharing of such resources. iii) Demonstrate how such resources may be properly exploited within the new generation of semantically enriched content or learning management systems that allow for knowledge expansion through the use of linked medical data and numerous literature resources also described through the same vocabularies. Methods: We implemented a video portal integrating videos from 500 US Hospital channels. The portal integrated 4,307 YouTube videos regarding surgery as described by 64,367 tags. BioPortal REST services were used within our portal to match SNOMED CT terms with YouTube tags by both exact match and non-exact match. The whole architecture was complemented with a mechanism to enrich the retrieved video resources with other educational material residing in other repositories by following contemporary semantic web advances, in the form of Linked Open Data (LOD) principles. Results: The average percentage of YouTube tags that were expressed using SNOMED CT terms was about 22.5%, while one third of YouTube tags per video contained a SNOMED CT term in a loose search; this analogy became one tenth in the case of exact match. Retrieved videos were then linked further to other resources by using LOD compliant systems. Such results were exemplified in the case of systems and technologies used in the mEducator EC funded project. Conclusion: YouTube Health videos can be searched for and retrieved using SNOMED CT terms with a high possibility of identifying health videos that users want based on their search criteria. Despite the fact that tagging of this information with SNOMED CT terms may vary, its availability and linked data capacity opens the door to new studies for personalized retrieval of content and linking with other knowledge through linked medical data and semantic advances in (learning) content management systems.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose With the increasing number of online multilingual resources, cross-language information retrieval (CLIR) has drawn much attention from the information retrieval (IR) research community. However, few studies have examined how and why multilingual searchers seek information in two or more languages, specifically how they switch and mix language in queries to get satisfying results. The purpose of this paper is to focus on Chinese–English bilinguals’ intra-sentential code-switching behaviors in online searches. The scenarios and reasons of code-switching, factors that may affect code-switching, the patterns of mixed language query formulation and reformulation and how current IR systems and other search tools can facilitate such information needs were examined. Design/methodology/approach In-depth semi-structured interviews were used as the research method. In total, 30 participants were recruited based on their English proficiency, location and profession, using a purposive sampling method. Findings Four scenarios and four reasons for using Chinese–English mixed language queries to cover information needs were identified, and results suggest that linguistic and cultural/social factors are of equivalent importance in code-switching behaviors. English terms and Chinese terms in queries play different roles in searches, and mixed language queries are irreplaceable by either single language queries or other search facilitating features. Findings also suggest current search engines and tools need greater emphasis in the user interface and more user education is required. Originality/value This study presents a qualitative analysis of bilinguals’ code-switching behaviors in online searches. Findings are expected to advance the theoretical understanding of bilingual users’ search strategies and interactions with IR systems, and provide insights for designing more effective IR systems and tools to discover multilingual online resources, including cross-language controlled vocabularies, personalized CLIR tools and mixed language query assistants.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine strengths and limitations that search engines (SEs) exhibit when responding to web search queries associated with the grade school curriculum Design/methodology/approach The authors employed a simulation-based experimental approach to conduct an in-depth empirical examination of SEs and used web search queries that capture information needs in different search scenarios. Findings Outcomes from this study highlight that child-oriented SEs are more effective than traditional ones when filtering inappropriate resources, but often fail to retrieve educational materials. All SEs examined offered resources at reading levels higher than that of the target audience and often prioritized resources with popular top-level domain (e.g. “.com”). Practical implications Findings have implications for human intervention, search literacy in schools, and the enhancement of existing SEs. Results shed light on the impact on children’s education that result from introducing misconception about SEs when these tools either retrieve no results or offer irrelevant resources, in response to web search queries pertinent to the grade school curriculum. Originality/value The authors examined child-oriented and popular SEs retrieval of resources aligning with task objectives and user capabilities–resources that match user reading skills, do not contain hate-speech and sexually-explicit content, are non-opinionated, and are curriculum-relevant. Findings identified limitations of existing SEs (both directly or indirectly supporting young users) and demonstrate the need to improve SE filtering and ranking algorithms.

Abstract (sommario):
Improving the quality of education is a challenging activity in every educational institution. Through this research paper, a model has been proposed representing the challenges in order to manage the trade-off to maintain the philosophy of continuous quality improvement and strict control based on Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). Several standards criteria, performance parameters, and Key Performance Indicators are studied and suggested for a quality self-assessment approach. After the data is collected, the significant features are selected for analysis of data using dedicated gain, which are designed by integrating the information gain and the dedicated weight constants. After that, deep learning methodologies like regression analysis, the artificial neural network, and the Matlab model are used for evaluating the academic quality of institutions. Finally, areas of development have been recommended using the probabilistic model to the administrators of the institutions based on the prediction made using a deep neural network.
