To achieve success in today's competitive environment, companies are realising the importance of design collaboration during new product development. The aim of this research was to develop a collaborative design tool for use by industrial designers and engineering designers. To achieve this, a literature review was undertaken to understand the working relationship among the two disciplines during new product development. Following this, empirical research through interviews and observations outlined three problem areas: conflicts in values and principles; differences in education; and differences in representational tools and methods. The latter was chosen because the problem area of design representations was found to be highly significant. In looking at bridging differences in design representations, a taxonomy comprising 35 forms of sketches, drawings, models and prototypes was generated. A second stage of empirical research was conducted to establish the popularity of each representation and the type of design / technical information that industrial designers and engineering designers communicated with. The information was indexed into CoLab cards that would enable the two disciplines to gain joint understanding and create shared knowledge when using visual design representations. Following a pilot evaluation and minor modifications, student and practitioner interviews with a case study were employed to assess the significance of CoLab. The findings revealed that 82% of the interviewees felt CoLab to have built a common ground through the use of visual design representations. 75% gave a positive rating when asked if the system would enhance collaboration and 91% gave the physical cards a positive response as it provided instant access to information and allowed easy sharing. This thesis is a step towards a greater understanding of collaboration between industrial designers and engineering designers. The use of the CoLab system provides the prospect of achieving a common ground between the two disciplines.

Designers of mass produced products require knowledge about anticipated users of their designs in order to make reasonable predictions about how users will interact with a product and how that product will satisfy users??? needs. However, there is little reported study of how industrial designers get the information they need about users, or to what extent they adapt and use information available from fields of study such as ergonomics or market research. Study in this area is important, in order to have a knowledge base that will support development of methods and data sources that may help designers and others bring a better understanding of users into the product design process. In this study, group interviews and a questionnaire were used to ask industrial designers how and where they get information about users, and about their perceptions of the role and value of user research in design. The group discussions involved a total of 45 participants from nine companies in Sydney. A questionnaire that followed was completed by 35 respondents representing at least 15 different design consultancy companies throughout Australia. Results showed that the designers surveyed used many of the methods promoted in the literature of ergonomics, design and market research, but often in a cut-down form. For example, there was widespread use of work colleagues and family members as test subjects. Designers used quantitative information where it was applicable but often sought qualitative information that would provide insights or enable them to develop empathic understanding of the users. Time and cost constraints limited the extent to which designers could engage in user research activity but there was general agreement that user research was a necessary part of design and that in the future designers will require a stronger capability in user research. Further research could focus on the evaluation of user research methods used in design and the potential for further collaboration between designers and other specialists in this area.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the implications of additive manufacturing on industrial design profession and designers through an explorative study. Through a literature survey, implications of additive manufacturing technologies on industrial designers and industrial design profession were explored. Expanding literature survey with on-line searches, several experimental and commercial application examples of rapid manufacturing of products were identified. These identified examples were then used for a qualitative evaluation on the implications of additive manufacturing for the industrial design profession and designers through semi-structured interviews conducted with seven professional industrial designers having experience with rapid manufacturing in Istanbul Turkey. The research concluded with significant implications of additive manufacturing having the potential to cause paradigm shifts in industrial designer&rsquo
s role, definition of the profession and design process. The conclusions derived include suggestions to exploit the potential brought by these technologies and their applications.

Essa pesquisa discursa a relação entre processo, metodologia de design e mobiliário contemporâneo brasileiro, e tem como objetivo geral analisar o processo de configuração de artefatos dos designers contemporâneos brasileiros de mobiliário, baseado no contexto de suas obras e identificando suas técnicas de criação. A abordagem da pesquisa foi conduzida pelo método dialético enquanto que para os procedimentos foram utilizados os métodos histórico e comparativo. A dissertação está dividida basicamente em duas partes: Fundamentação teórica e pesquisa. A primeira consiste em pesquisa bibliográfica baseada nos três elementos da pesquisa: Breve história do móvel no Brasil, Cultura material e imaterial brasileira e Processos de design e metodologias. A segunda parte, descreve o processo da pesquisa incluindo o levantamento da obra de designers contemporâneos em livros, revistas, websites e periódicos especializados, além das entrevistas, principal fonte de primeira mão.Como resultado, foram geradas categorias que apontam para soluções comuns ao processo de design na contemporaneidade

The aim of this research was to determine the extent of use, by Australian manufacturers, of lean manufacturing techniques, and the current and future implications for industrial designers. A survey was conducted to gather data on organisation demographics, the role of the industrial designer, production techniques and product development. The survey was distributed to 220 manufacturing organisations undertaking product development in Australia. The number of surveys returned was 134, representing a 60.9 percent response rate. The surveyed organisations represented a broad cross-section of Australian manufacturers by size, location and industry. Manufacturing organisations were categorised into three groups: lean manufacturers, emerging users of lean manufacturing and non-lean manufacturers. It was concluded that lean manufacturing is being adopted by Australian manufacturers and that lean manufacturing is impacting on the role of the industrial design. In general, the data obtained in this research confirms views expressed in the literature that describes current changes in the manufacturing industry. This literature suggests that design will become the next competitive 'weapon', and become a central part of organisational strategy. However, the data also suggests the design profession has still some way to go to adequately grasp its full professional potential, particularly in the area of product development management. The results indicate that industrial designers underperformed in five functional areas that could be considered fundamental to the service normally provided by industrial designers and they have not exceeded expectations in any of the functions included in the survey. It was found that overall, industrial designers were not regarded highly by organisations as a source of new product ideas. Another troubling finding was that industrial designers were generally not perceived as being suitable to manage product development groups. The results of this research could be used to guide educational institutions in regard to curricula for industrial design courses so that future graduates may more effectively fulfil industry requirements.

After a broad literature survey, a descriptive-survey study that aims demonstrating the relationship between engineers and industrial designers in manufacturing companies in Turkey is held in order to investigate the effectiveness of teamwork in product development process. A twelve item questionnaire which has four open-ended questions and eight Likert-scaled statements has been prepared. As the result of this study, a positive relationship is found between the performance of product development team and the effects of cooperation, social and professional communication, having clear and common goals, sharing knowledge and experiences, leadership, coordination and cooperative problem solving and decision making processes to the relationship between engineers and industrial designers.

Numerous works have been produced on the topic of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) to better educate the designers of products as to various methods of manufacturing and their specific requirements. It is the common aim of these works to eliminate so called "over the wall" product development in which procedurally ignorant designers pass largely un-producible design concepts to manufacturers, who are then required to make necessary refinements and changes. When applied correctly, DFM results in the efficient and economical production of well-designed products, whose forms have been attuned to the particular requirements of their final method of production at an early stage of development. However, one aspect of using such approaches is that design intent is frequently compromised for the sake of manufacturability and innovative design concepts are often dismissed as being unfeasible. Recent advances in additive manufacturing technologies and their use in the direct manufacture of end-use products from digital data sources has brought about a new method of production that is known as Rapid Manufacturing (RM). Unlike conventional subtractive machining processes, such as milling and turning which generate forms by removing material from a stock billet, RM parts are grown from an empty part bed using the controlled addition of specialised build materials. Additive manufacturing requires no forming tools, is unrestricted by many conventional process considerations and is capable of producing practically any geometry. The freedoms that are associated with this technology facilitate the design and realisation of product concepts that would be unachievable with any other method of production. This promotes an almost boundless design philosophy in which innovative product solutions can be designed to best meet the needs of specification criteria, rather than the production process with which they are to be made. However, unlike other forms of manufacturing, the newness of this technology means that there is no proven aid or tool to assist industrial designers in exploiting the freedoms that it offers. Using information that was collated in the literature review and case study projects, a systematic design approach was proposed and then tested in a series of user trials with groups of industrial design students and practicing industrial design professionals. The results of these trials are discussed, showing a common acknowledgement from both groups that the proposed DFRM tool was of assistance and that it had an influence upon their design work. However, whilst the student group were generally receptive toward tool uptake, the experienced designers showed more of a reluctance to abandon their own "tried and tested" methods in favour of the unknown and unproven approach. It is concluded that this attitude would be fairly representative of wider opinion and that the future uptake of any such tool would be reliant upon sufficient evidence of its successful application. Hence, suggestions are made for future work to continue tool development and for more validation trials to be conducted with its intended user group.

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio de Janeiro
A presente dissertação tem como objeto de estudo a Gráfica Imprinta, criada a partir de um projeto cuidadosamente elaborado por seus mentores Aloísio Magalhães e Arnaud Torres, com o objetivo de atender, principalmente, aos designers gráficos do Rio de Janeiro. Enfocando o período de 1969 a 1989, que compreende a trajetória da Empresa desde sua concepção até a mudança de administração, o trabalho se insere na história da evolução da Indústria Gráfica no Rio de Janeiro. Aborda o período que se inicia com a formação dos alunos da Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial, ESDI UERJ, em 1963, até a década de 1980, com a consolidação da tecnologia offset, como principal forma de impressão em nosso país. Partiu-se da premissa de que a conjuntura tecnológica pode influenciar no processo de desenvolvimento de um impresso e, também, de que os designers podem interceder no processo evolutivo de uma gráfica. Numa primeira fase foi feita uma pesquisa exploratória na qual entramos em contato com ex-alunos formados pela ESDI, durante a primeira década de seu funcionamento, que apontaram a Gráfica Imprinta como referência de serviços diferenciados. Passando esta, a ser o foco da pesquisa, abordamos seu idealizador, Arnaud Torres, bem como, mais sete designers e dois antigos funcionários. Os profissionais que participaram da pesquisa, nos forneceram dados por meio de entrevistas não estruturadas, que ocorreram entre junho e agosto de 2007, foram gravadas e posteriormente transcritas e analisadas. Elaboramos um acervo iconográfico que se refere, tanto à história da Imprinta como também, documenta parte da produção de alguns designers e a indústria gráfica da época. Consideramos que a história da Gráfica Imprinta demonstra que, naquele momento de transição da tecnologia, a disponibilidade nela encontrada pelos designers para sua experimentação no campo da produção e a troca de conhecimento que ali se verificou, produziram crescimento em termos técnicos e teóricos para todos os envolvidos, bem como, incremento na qualidade dos impressos ali executados e otimização de projetos gráficos futuros
This dissertation has a printshop named Imprinta as the studys object. Imprinta was created from a carefully elaborated project, whose authors are Aloisio Magalhaes and Arnaud Torres, and that had the goal of offering services, mainly, to Rio de Janeiros graphical designers. Focusing on the period from 1969 to 1989 which encompasses the story of the company since its inception to the moment a new administration took over, this work describes part of the history of the printing industry in Rio de Janeiro. It addresses the period that starts in 1963 with the formation of new students of the Superior School of Industrial Design (Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial, ESDI) that belongs to the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Estatual do Rio de Janeiro, UERJ) and ends in the 1980s with the consolidation of Offset as the main printing technology in Brazil. We started by assuming that the technological environment can influence the process of development of printed matter and also that designers can impact a print shops evolutionary process. In the first phase of this work, an investigative research where we contacted former ESDI students that graduated during ESDIs first decade of existence, pointed us to Imprinta as a reference for differentiated printing services. With Imprinta as the focus of our research, we contacted Arnaud Torres, its mentor, seven additional designers and also two former employees of the company. From June to August of 2007, the research participants, by means of nonstructured interviews, provided information that were recorder and then transcribed and analyzed. We were able to build a collection of iconographic items that relates to both the history of Imprinta and also documents part of the production of some designers and the printing industry at the time. We believe that Imprintas story shows that, at that moment of technology transition, the availability Imprinta provided to designers for their experimentation in the field of production and exchange of knowledge, has generated technical and theoretical growth for all involved, an increase the quality of the printing services run at Imprinta and the optimization of future printing projects

O presente estudo, que se caracteriza como investigativo qualitativo, tem como objetivo principal analisar a convergência entre os campos das artes visuais e do design. Para fundamentar a análise, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa bibliográfica que analisou as contribuições das vanguardas modernistas para o design moderno e o papel da escola alemã, Bauhaus, no campo de design; e apresentou o conceito de linguagem híbrida, a mestiçagem no design brasileiro, as relações entre a arte e design e o Prêmio Museu da Casa Brasileira (MCB). Com base neste levantamento teórico, foram apresentados os designers Luciana Martins e Gerson de Oliveira, da empresa ,OVO, e os objetos selecionos por este estudo, que são os dois produtos premiados pelo MCB, que possuem características artísticas e são comercializados e reconhecidos como objetos do design brasileiro contemporâneo. This study, which is characterized as qualitative researchers, aims at analyzing the convergece between the fields of visual arts and design. To support our analysis, we developed a literature that examined the contributions of the avant-garde modernists to the modern design and the role of the German school, Bauhaus, in the design field, and presented the concept of hybrid language, mixing in the Brazilian design, relationships between art and design and the Brazilian House Prize (MCB). Based on this theoretical approach, the designers were presented Luciana Martins and Gerson de Oliveira, the company, EGG, and the selected for this study, the two products that are rewarded by the MCD, which possess artistic features and are marketed and recognized as objects contemporary Brazilian design. O ensino de design vem sofrendo grandes mudanças nos últimos anos, principalmente no que se refere a sua internacionalização. o objetivo esta tese é propor indicadores para implantação do ensino de design comum ao Mercosul, sem desrespeitar as legislações e diversidades regionais. Para a realização deste trabalho foi delimitado como objeto de pesquisa os cursos de Disign com habilitação em Projeto de Produto, também foi realizada revisão de literatura sobre o processo de internacionalização da educação superior, diretrizes, normas e políticas públicas que regem a educação superior brasileira; ensino do design no Brasil e nos países membros do Mercosul. Foram realizadas três pesquisas de campo: Portugal, Brasil e nos páises pertencentes ao Mercosul. A primeira parte das pesquisas foi realizada a partir de uma pesquisa bibliográfica e documental a fim de coletar informações sobre as instituições pesquisadas na segunda parte foram realizadas entrevistas em Portugal com professores que participaram da implantação do Processo de Bolonha, a fim de perceber quais são as especificidades deste processo de forma que pudessem ser aproveitados os pontos positivos e negativos para uma possível implementação no Mercosul e no Brasil, com os coordenadores dos cursos de design no intuito de verificar como os cursos visualizam a questão da mobilidade acadêmica. Por fim, foram sugeridos indicadores que podem ser implantados em cursos de design do Mercosul visando facilitar o processo de mobilidade, em especial o aproveitamento de estudos, possibilitando, desta forma, uma maior integração regional
Over the past few years, approaches in teaching Design have been going through several changes mainly regarding internalizations. This study seeks to propose indicators for an integrated teaching system in Design for Mercosul without disrespecting laws and particularities for every region. Design courses with emphasis in Product, Design were the object of this study along with a literature review on the process of higher education internalizations, as well as guidelines, regulations and public policies for Brazilian universities. Three field researches were conducted: Portugal, Brazil and the remaining countries in Mercosul. Resumo: O ensino de design vem sofrendo grandes mudanças nos últimos anos, principalmente no que se refere a sua internacionalização. o objetivo esta tese é propor indicadores para implantação do ensino de design comum ao Mercosul, sem desrespeitar as legislações e diversidades regionais. Para a realização deste trabalho foi delimitado como objeto de pesquisa os cursos de Disign com habilitação em Projeto de Produto, também foi realizada revisão de literatura sobre o processo de internacionalização da educação superior, diretrizes, normas e políticas públicas que regem a educação superior brasileira; ensino do design no Brasil e nos países membros do Mercosul. Foram realizadas três pesquisas de campo: Portugal, Brasil e nos páises pertencentes ao Mercosul. A primeira parte das pesquisas foi realizada a partir de uma pesquisa bibliográfica e documental a fim de coletar informações sobre as instituições pesquisadas na segunda parte foram realizadas entrevistas em Portugal com professores que participaram da implantação do Processo de Bolonha, a fim de perceber quais são as especificidades deste processo de forma que pudessem ser aproveitados os pontos positivos e negativos para uma possível implementação no Mercosul e no Brasil, com os coordenadores dos cursos de design no intuito de verificar como os cursos visualizam a questão da mobilidade acadêmica. Por fim, foram sugeridos indicadores que podem ser implantados em cursos de design do Mercosul visando facilitar o processo de mobilidade, em especial o aproveitamento de estudos, possibilitando, desta forma, uma maior integração regional
Abstract: Over the past few years, approaches in teaching Design have been going through several changes mainly regarding internalizations. This study seeks to propose indicators for an integrated teaching system in Design for Mercosul without disrespecting laws and particularities for every region. Design courses with emphasis in Product, Design were the object of this study along with a literature review on the process of higher education internalizations, as well as guidelines, regulations and public policies for Brazilian universities. Three field researches were conducted: Portugal, Brazil and the remaining countries in Mercosul. Economic recession and job scarcity has led to a decline in the demand for design services. Graduates in all fields are faced with the risk of unemployment beyond graduation, with youth unemployment rates in South Africa and globally at alarming levels. The evolving social and economic challenges of our times place increasing pressure on the responsibility of higher education institutions to design learning experiences that adequately prepare graduates for the world of work, whether in employment or in entrepreneurial self-employment. However, there is a significant gap between universities’ supply and industry’s demand for graduates with the desired attributes, which research shows include not only subject-specific knowledge and skills, but particularly ‘soft skills’ that make an employee effective at work. The paradox of students graduating without professional experience can be overcome through approaches such as work-integrated learning, which embed the lessons of professional practice into design education curricula. This research project examines a case study of work-integrated learning at a South African university of technology in order to develop an industry-responsive model of professional practice in Industrial Design education. The case examined is the “R5K project”, a year-long group project in BTech Industrial Design in which students are challenged – simulating the world of work - to design, develop, manufacture, market and sell a product, and earn at least ZAR 5 000. This research set out to assess the extent to which the project effectively prepared students for work.

This thesis argues that a unique design ideology manifested in Soviet Estonia during the Late Socialist period. It was a combination of broader Soviet design ideologies concerned with material practices and the control of production, and Western design influences that were more apparent in Estonia than elsewhere in the Soviet Union and provided aesthetic guidance in a vacuum of Soviet style. This research allows for the first time a determination of the characterising qualities of Estonia’s Late Socialist industrial design, as well as provision of a new contextual framework for considering Soviet design ideas more broadly. To date, studies of Soviet design have focused on object aesthetics, leaving authors who are then faced with the absence of a consistent Soviet style to assume an equally absent Soviet design ideology. However, while it is not necessarily visible in the appearance of products, a tangible Soviet design ideology existed in bureaucratic apparatuses, material practices and accompanying textual materials. This thesis uses oral history and archival research to provide a detailed analysis of the Soviet ideology operating within one cultural monad of the wider USSR. In doing so it breaks away from the emphasis on Russia as the totality of 20th century Soviet socialism to make a first important step toward a more substantial history of Soviet production. Estonia can be understood as a meeting point between two major world design cultures, and from its example we can better understand the characteristics, functioning, and impact of different design ideologies.

This research study investigates the level of awareness of, and engagement with Design for Sustainability (DfS) among three categories of actors within the Cape Town communication design fraternity: design educators, design students and design professionals. It focuses specifically on the degree of application of DfS within three selected Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Cape Town, while also interrogating the local industry’s need for students who are knowledgeable and skilled in this subject. To successfully practice DfS, communication designers need to be responsive to the possible environmental, social, cultural and economic impacts of their work. This study argues for the early incorporation of principles of sustainability into communication design curricula in order to promote the uptake of DfS. An extensive review of literature facilitates the showcasing of practical examples of how communication designers can positively address sustainability through their design solutions. Further, it also unpacks the barriers and solutions to integrating DfS into both education and practice. The study employs a qualitative research approach. Using purposive sampling, rich data is gathered from the key informants through focus groups and semi-structured interviews. Activity Theory is used as an analytical lens through which to examine the dynamics between the three different actors who are involved in the activities of teaching, learning and practicing DfS in communication design. The findings identify major gaps in the teaching of DfS as the subject is typically considered to be applicable to environmental issues. There is also limited understanding of how to practically apply principles of sustainability. Along with proposing appropriate strategies and tools to enrich the education around DfS in a more holistic manner, the study highlights the need for proactive re-curriculation so as to effectively sensitise students to the responsibility of communication designers to tackle sustainability issues. A set of adaptable guidelines is proffered as a way of making DfS more accessible to students while training them to channel their unique skill set and enhance attributes of agility and resilience in preparation for professional practice and an ever changing world. Educators are seen as playing the most crucial role in effecting the proposed guidelines because they interface with both students and industry; as well as straddle the critical domains of research, pedagogy and professional praxis. Additionally, this study recommends establishing more robust, responsive and meaningful connections between academia and industry in order to develop contextually relevant industry standards that will promote and advance DfS best practice among the Cape Town communication design fraternity.

Abstract: This study, which is characterized as qualitative researchers, aims at analyzing the convergece between the fields of visual arts and design. To support our analysis, we developed a literature that examined the contributions of the avant-garde modernists to the modern design and the role of the German school, Bauhaus, in the design field, and presented the concept of hybrid language, mixing in the Brazilian design, relationships between art and design and the Brazilian House Prize (MCB). Based on this theoretical approach, the designers were presented Luciana Martins and Gerson de Oliveira, the company, EGG, and the selected for this study, the two products that are rewarded by the MCD, which possess artistic features and are marketed and recognized as objects contemporary Brazilian design. "An investigation into the impact of 3D digital modelling media on industrial designers' internal and external modes of communication. " Effective communication in product design facilitates effective decision-making, which in turn is essential to a successful design process. The medium of communication is therefore likely to influence the decision making process, making the appropriate selection of media key to the progress of a project. Based on this premise, this study investigates the impact that 3D digital media is having on designers' internal and external modes of communication, in association with other media tools and techniques which are used. Analysis of a range of commercial product design case studies has enabled the creation of a tool assisting both the practice of industrial designers or the teaching of the use of 3D digital media to industrial design students. The tool helps designers appreciate the tactical application of digital technologies, to establish how, when and why digital media might be employed as a communication tool within the design process. Action Research methodologies were drawn on to develop a research framework for the study. This comprised three core elements: reflective practice, reflection on practice, and reflection on reflective practice. The data derived from these supported the methods used for case study compilation and cross-case analysis. The tool for practice takes the form of a heuristic map, intended to help the industrial designer understand the appropriate use, and integration of, traditional and digital media throughout the design process. Central to this understanding is the premise that it is just as important to design practice to consider 3D digital media as a tool for communication, as well as for design. The study seeks to build a bridge between theory and practice, through the amalgamation of practitioner based research and qualitative observational research methods. Publication of the findings via a CD & website contribute to the accessibility of the process and findings of the research investigation.

As heurísticas são regras gerais de influência que atuam nas decisões das pessoas. Estudos recentes mostram que elas interferem nas decisões de projeto dos designers, tanto através do uso da memoria ou da imaginação (heurística da disponibilidade), quanto de julgamentos por similaridade (heurística da representatividade). Devido ao fato de designers lidarem com problemas incertos, percebe-se a importância desses profissionais estarem cientes do processo que envolve tais julgamentos intuitivos. Acredita-se que o ensino do autoconhecimento intuitivo, durante os anos de formação dos designers, tem o potencial de prepará-los para projetar com maior consciência dos processos cognitivos envolvidos em suas práticas. Nesse sentido, o presente estudo propôs, como objetivo geral, compreender o funcionamento das heurísticas em estudantes de design nas decisões de projeto, durante o seu primeiro e último ano de formação. Para tanto, foi desenvolvida uma pesquisa exploratória com entrevistas em profundidade, buscando entender o problema através das percepções dos próprios estudantes de design. Como principais resultados, percebeu-se que as heurísticas atuam nos designers em formação, durante todo o processo de projeto. Além disso, elas demostraram estar mais presentes do que o raciocínio, ao tomar decisões projetuais. Quanto a diferença sobre o a influência das heurísticas entre os estudantes do início e do final do curso, observou-se que os alunos cursando o último ano da graduação tinham percepção sobre algumas influências heurísticas. Porém por não terem conhecimento sobre o processo intuitivo, e nem da atuação das heurísticas, os estudantes não sabiam como gerenciar tais influências. Sendo assim, compreendeu-se a importância das instituições de ensino de design incentivarem o desenvolvimento da intuição, buscando integra-lo as habilidades trabalhadas nos seus programas de educação.
Heuristics are general rules of influence that act on people's decisions. Recent studies show that they interfere in designers' project decisions, either through the use of memory or imagination (heuristics of availability), or through judgments by similarity (heuristics of representativeness). Because designers deal with uncertain problems, its possible to realize the importance of these professionals being aware of the process involving such intuitive judgments. It is believed that the teaching of intuitive self-knowledge during the formative years of designers has the potential to prepare them to project with greater awareness of the cognitive processes involved in their practices. In this sense, the present study proposed, as a general objective, to understand the operation of heuristics in design students in design decisions during their first and last year of formation. For that, an exploratory research with in-depth interviews was developed, trying to understand the problem through the perceptions of the students of design itself. As main results, it was noticed that heuristics act in the designers in formation, throughout the entire design process. In addition, they proved to be more present than reasoning in making project decisions. As for the difference about the influence of the heuristics between the students at the beginning and end of the course, it was observed that the last year students of had perceptions about some heuristic influences. But, because they had no knowledge of the intuitive process, or of the heuristics, they did not know how to manage such influences. Thus, it was understood the importance of design education institutions to encourage the development of intuition, seeking to integrate it to the skills worked in their education programs.

Esta dissertação apresenta uma pesquisa a cerca da negociação no design de moda sobmedida, tendo como objetivo analisar os mecanismos usados pelos designers em momentos de conflitos durante o processo de projeto que envolve a participação do cliente. Para tanto é apresentado referencial teórico em dois capítulos. Onde inicialmente, são discorridos os conceitos de design, aspectos referentes aos processos e modelos de projetos de design, para por fim descrever o processo característico dos projetos de moda sobmedida. Segue-se a abordagem conceitos relativos a conflito e negociação, importância da negociação e meios para a solução de conflitos. A investigação em caráter exploratório com abordagem qualitativa foi realizada por meio a entrevistas semiestruturadas, buscando a visão dos designers, que foram submetidas à Analise de Conteúdo. Após apresentação dos resultados obtidos, são dispostas as discussões ampliando os conhecimentos sobre a compreensão de como designers de moda agem ao enfrentar momentos de conflito junto a seus clientes em projetos exclusivos. A pesquisa contribuiu para a discussão do tema, bem como foi esclarecedora em relação à prática de projeto de moda envolvendo os clientes.
This dissertation presents a research about the negotiation in custom-made fashion design, having as obtectives to analyse the mechanisms used by designers to solve conflicts during the design prosses involving the participation of the client. For this purpose, the theoretical reference is presented in two chapters, where it is discussed the concepts of design, aspects related to processes of the designers and tools for conflict resolution. It was carried out the exploratory research with qualitative approach through semi-structured in-depth interviews, seeking the view of designers who were submitted to the Content Analysis. After the presentation of the results obtained, it is presented the discussions, increasing the knowledge on the understanding of how fashion designers act when facing moments of conflict with their clients in exclusive designs . The research not only contributed for the discussion of the theme but was also illustrative as to the practice of fashion design involving clients.

Environmental labels on products and services have been increasingly significant in influencing consumer purchasing and represent a crucial communication of the environmental credentials of products and companies. Yet their importance to industrial designers, who are recognised as having significant influence over the environmental impact of products, is less known. The overall aim of this research project is to investigate factors affecting the implementation of UK environmental labels by in-house industrial designers in UK Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs). A review of the literature on industrial designers and environmental labels found that there was a gap in knowledge surrounding the factors affecting how and whether in-house industrial designers implement labels in their work, and what understanding they have. In response to the literature review a number of research questions were generated, which influenced the direction of this emergent, exploratory research. A Preliminary Study was set up to collect qualitative data from practicing industrial designers in UK SMEs on their recognition and use of environmental label schemes. A mock-up Resource was consequently developed that provided the information the Preliminary Study participants claimed to need. During the Main Study the Resource was used as an elicitation tool to further probe designers' understanding and use of labels. Subsequently, three Case Studies were conducted with UK SMEs who have implemented labels on their products, to identify elements of best practice. The in-house SME designers in the study appeared to have knowledge of environmental label types and schemes. Both this and designers' position within their companies especially in terms of their input on design briefs moderates their ability to implement labels. The cooperation and contribution of colleagues is also significant to the effective application including driving their use and being willing to include them in the product development process from early stages to impact on success or effectiveness. It is suggested that a whole company approach is needed. This thesis provides an original contribution to knowledge on in-house designers' capability to implement labels; understanding of designers' current knowledge and use of labels; and the role of designers in all SMEs, not just those engaged in ecodesign or using environmental labels.

La thèse prend comme objet les enjeux de formation des futurs designers. Au croisement de la sociologie de l’éducation, du travail et des professions, il s’agit de rendre compte des différentes socialisations qui ont conduit des personnes à devenir designer. Il s’agit de comprendre qui et comment des personnes décident de devenir designer aujourd’hui. Cette thèse repose sur une enquête réalisée dans deux institutions de formation qui ont la particularité de se situer au plus haut niveau du champ de l’enseignement supérieur en design : une grande école publique et une grande école privée. D’autre part, il s’agit d’examiner les différentes voies professionnelles qui se dessinent pour les étudiants. Premièrement, à travers l’analyse des caractéristiques sociales des élèves admis dans ces des deux établissements, il s’agit de comprendre les processus communs de socialisation primaire qui ont conduit ces jeunes à s’orienter vers la profession de designer. Ensuite, nous verrons comment ces deux écoles, via leur mode de sélection et leur socialisation secondaire spécifique, s’opposent assez nettement sur la manière de concevoir le métier de designer et la nature des services qu’il peut être amené à accomplir au sein de l’entreprise. La méthodologie mise en œuvre rassemble des observations de longue durée ; une soixantaine d'entretiens réalisés avec des étudiants, des enseignants et des professionnels ; le dépouillement exhaustifs des archives des dossiers scolaires des deux écoles ainsi que les résultats d'une enquête quantitative menée auprès des étudiants en formation en 2010
The thesis takes for object the training issues of future designers. At the crossroad of education sociology, of work and professions sociology, it consists in accounting the different socializations which led individuals to become designers. It consists in understanding who and how people decide today to become designer. This thesis is based on a survey led in two training institutions which have the particularity to be on the highest level of design superior teaching: one large public school and one large private school. On the other hand, it consists in examining the different professional paths existing for students. First, thought the analysis of the social characteristics of student admitted in these two establishments, it consists in understanding the common processes of primary socialization which led these young people to turn towards the designers profession. Then, we will see how these two schools, thought their selection way and their specific secondary socialization, oppose themselves quite vividly on the way to conceive the designers profession and the nature of the services a designer can be led to accomplish in a company. The methodology gathers long duration observations; sixty interviews carried out with students, teachers and professionals; the exhaustive analysis of the archives of scholar files from the two schools and the results of a quantitative survey led among students in 2010

A proposta de teoria explicativa sobre a cognição em design pretende contribuir para a compreensão do modo de operar dos designers, considerando o modelo de pensamento que lhe está subjacente e que é detentor de características de uma natureza particular. Este conhecimento é extrapolado para processos de resolução de problemas incompletos, inerentes à complexidade da realidade, que consideram o modelo de racionalidade técnica em que assentam as actuais condições de funcionamento do capitalismo. A sustentabilidade dos actuais modos de vida com base no consumo é colocada em análise, com pensamento de design para a resolução de problemas onde existe uma literacia visual a par de uma literacia verbal. As potencialidades do modo visual, na proximidade à experiência sensorial original sem perda de significado, permitem-nos apontar para a possibilidade de transações imateriais com produtos analítico-simbólicos. Preconizando uma desmaterialização do consumo propõe-se o desenvolvimento de soluções com vista à sustentabilidade nos diferentes contextos de actividade humana, tendo como base processos cognitivos mais amplos e com melhores realizações.
The proposed theory about cognition in design aims to contribute to the understanding of the operating mode of designers, considering the model of thought behind it that holds characteristics of a particular nature. This knowledge is extrapolated to cases of incomplete problems resolution inherent to reality complexity, consider the model of technical rationality which based the current operating conditions of capitalism. The sustainability of current lifestyles based on consumption is placed on analysis, with design thinking to solve problems where there is a visual literacy along with a verbal literacy. The potential of the visual mode, close to the sensory experience without loss of original meaning, let us point to the possibility of imaterial transactions with symbolic-analytic products. Advocating a dematerialization of consumption it is proposed to develop solutions for sustainability in different contexts of human activity, based on cognitive processes broader and with better achievements.

Anecdotal evidence from experienced engineers suggest that barriers to creativity are often due to the limitations of current technology, methods and support systems (Baird, Moore, & Jagodzinski, 2000). The aim of this research was to explore what the perceived barriers to creativity are and how they are circumvented by design engineers working in New Projects Engineering (NPE), Rolls-Royce Aerospace (Bristol). Semi-structured interviews with four employees working in engineering design comprised a Scoping Study. This provided a general overview of the major issues perceived by the design engineers regarding barriers to creativity and resulted in six themes being identified. These themes were used as a framework for a Design Group Interviews Study that followed. Sixteen engineers comprising project managers, team leaders, experienced designers and new designers, graduate employees and trainees were interviewed using the same method. Using grounded theory to analyse the data, sixteen categories were drawn from the data. Confirmation of the findings was achieved through presentations and workshops with different groups from Rolls-Royce, and the development of an Interrelationship Digraph illustrating the relationships between the categories. The second phase of the research focused on the phenomena under current working conditions. In the Tracking Study interview diaries recorded with thirteen design engineers over an eight week period highlighted the salient issues relating to their perceived barriers to creativity. Thirteen categories (some of which could be mapped onto the previous categories and some which were new) were drawn from the data. Validation of the categories was achieved through direct observations of two design engineers in the week long Shadowing Study and completed this phase of the research. Mapping and interpretation of the findings in relation to the literature obtained further verification. From these analyses it was becoming evident that perceived barriers to creativity were present at iii many different layers of the enterprise from a macro, organisational level to the microenvironment of the individual design engineer. The final phase entailed the development of a conditional/consequential matrix model to illustrate the relationship between the macro and micro conditions, under which barriers to creativity were investigated, leading to the development of a theory. The final conclusions and suggestions for improvements demonstrate the relationship between high/low barriers and high/low creativity. The research has shown the benefits of taking an interdisciplinary socio-technical approach and has highlighted the importance and relevance of the social dimension, as well as the technological, in the investigation of engineering design. iv

Abordar o design de produtos e sua evolução é falar, também, da evolução dos processos produtivos e tecnologia, do usuário e do designer. Antes da Revolução Industrial, o designer era caracterizado por um funcionário capacitado para adaptar projetos para a capacidade fabril, enquanto o usuário era visto como um comprador final, sem aspirações e necessidades. Após a Revolução Industrial, a produção de bens de consumo assumiu uma escala ascendente e as indústrias se viram forçadas a se adaptar para acompanhar o ritmo de consumo do mercado, bem como a atividade do designer. O usuário, com mais opções de compra, passou a ser considerado relevante no processo de desenvolvimento, e foco dos objetivos de projeto. O surgimento de novas tecnologias como a prototipagem rápida e a realidade virtual, permitiu uma diminuição no tempo e custo gastos durante a validação de projetos de produto, influenciando diretamente a forma como os produtos passaram a ser desenvolvidos. A impressão tridimensional, assim como a realidade virtual, surge como alternativa viável para a avaliação do projeto, devido à rapidez de execução e baixo custo. Este estudo tem como principal objetivo analisar a utilização das tecnologias citadas no processo de análise de projeto de produto junto ao usuário final. Para tanto, se faz necessário abordar a forma como os artefatos vêm sendo desenvolvidos, a relação entre usuário e produto, além das técnicas de representação tridimensional.

O processo de design é tradicionalmente desenvolvido por designers que atuam nos departamentos de pesquisa e desenvolvimento das empresas ou em escritórios externos às mesmas. As Micro e Pequenas Empresas (MPE's), um componente expressivo do contexto econômico brasileiro, normalmente não possuem departamentos evoluídos, nem dispõem de recursos organizacionais que lhes permitam colaborações internas e duradouras com profissionais externos. Do encontro às novas tecnologias e ao design contemporâneo, surgem novas formas de relação que podem abrir caminhos para a inserção do design também nas empresas menores. As plataformas de design voltadas para o desenvolvimento de projetos em rede, de fato, permitem a conexão remota com uma multiplicidade de designers free lances. O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar o desenvolvimento e o funcionamento de plataformas de design para a interação entre MPE's e designers, entendidas como instrumento estratégico para a inserção do design nestas realidades organizacionais. A partir de um referencial teórico sobre redes de cooperação, design estratégico e plataformas de design, é desenvolvido um estudo de casos múltiplos de natureza exploratória sobre esse assunto. Além de descrever o estado da arte dessa nova modalidade de negócio para o design, o estudo foca especialmente nas abordagens processuais praticadas nessas plataformas e nas dinâmicas de relação e interação entre os atores que se relacionam por meio delas que são: os articuladores, os designers e os empresários. Os casos estudados são Projeto Maestro e Invalley Inovação e Design, que permitem explorar aspectos diferentes das plataformas de design. Enquanto o processo do Projeto Maestro é oferecer design de comunicação para clientes que não tinham acesso a design de comunicação em função do preço e da região geográfica de localização. A Invalley Inovação e Design transforma conhecimentos de diversos setores em soluções rentáveis, com a finalidade de ajudar as empresas a gerarem competitividade e valor através do design e projetos inovadores. Este estudo investigou a realidade atual de uma nova modalidade de negócio e contextualizou a importância das plataformas de design para alavancar desenvolvimento e pequenas inovações e, como resultados obtidos destacam-se: a (re)conceituação de plataformas de design, um novo mercado para prestação de serviços de design, as consequências do design e a importância da relação no processo projetual.
The design process is traditionally developed by designers who work at the companies’ development and research departments or in offices outside them. The Micro and Small companies (MPEs), an expressive component in the Brazilian economic context, usually don’t have evolved departments, neither do they have organizational resources that allow them to give lasting internal collaboration with external professionals. From the encounter between new technologies and contemporaneous design, new forms of collaboration emerge, and they can open ways for inserting design even in smaller companies. The design platforms made for developing projects in chains, in fact, allow the remote connection with the multiplicity of freelance designers. The present study aims to analyze the development and functioning of design platforms for the interaction between MPEs and designers, understood as strategic instruments for inserting design in these organizational realities. From a theoretical reference about cooperation networks, strategic design and design platform, it is developed a multiple case study of an exploratory nature about this subject. Besides describing the art state of this new modality of business for design, the study focuses especially on the process approaches practiced in these platforms and the dynamics of interaction and cooperation between the actors that relate through them which are: articulators, designers and business people. The cases which were studied are the Maestro Project and Invalley Innovation and Design, which allows exploring different aspects of design platforms. While the Maestro Project’s process is to offer communication design to clients who did not have access to communication design because of the price and the geographical region of location, the Invalley Innovation and Design transforms knowledge from different sectors in profitable solutions, aiming to help companies generate competitiveness and value, through design and innovative projects. This study investigated the current reality of a new business modality and contextualized the importance of design platforms to leverage development and small innovations, and with the results obtained, it stands out: the (re)conceptualization of design platforms, a new market for design services, the consequences of design and the importance of cooperation in the project process.

Resumo: Esta dissertação descreve a relação entre colaboração e jogos eletrônicos. Os jogos eletrônicos são considerados uma mídia nova de interação humano-computador (IHC) em relação à história da computação e do design. Seu potencial como ambiente colaborativo entre pessoas ainda não foi suficientemente estudado e esclarecido. A questão que orienta a pesquisa é como favorecer a colaboração dentro de um jogo eletrônico. O universo dos jogos é amplo e subdividido, por essas razões o presente estudo está delimitado a jogos com múltiplos jogadores (multiplayers), mais especificamente modalidade MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). Tal modalidade foi escolhida por englobar dinâmicas de equipes e por ser considerada a modalidade de jogo mais utilizada atualmente. O processo de desenvolvimento da pesquisa se deu inicialmente por uma investigação bibliográfica sistemática, depois assistemática com maior definição da busca, intuindo a complementação da bibliografia também foi utilizada a pesquisa documental. O objetivo dessas primeiras etapas foi o estabelecimento da fundamentação teórica da pesquisa bem como o desenvolvimento do protocolo de ensaio de interação. Após o cumprimento destes procedimentos metodológicos e coleta de dados, por meio do ensaio de interação, realizou-se uma comparação entre dados na forma de triangulação. Este procedimento culminou na redação de observações acerca do jogo Dota 2 visando fornecer bases para o Game Design com incentivo a colaboração entre jogadores MOBA". As observações poderão servir de auxílio a profissionais que atuam no desenvolvimento de jogos eletrônicos (Game Design) cujo ofício impacta diretamente em aspectos de usabilidade de novos jogos. Abstract: This dissertation describes the relationship between collaboration and electronic games. Electronic games are considered a new human-computer interaction (HCI) media in relation to the history of computing and design. The potential of this media as a collaborative environment among people has not been sufficiently studied and understood. The question that guides the research is to foster collaboration within a video game. The world of games is wide and subdivided, for these reasons this study is delimited to multiplayer games mode specifically MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). That method was chosen to encompass dynamic teams and for being considered the game mode most commonly used today. The research development process was initially for a systematic literature search, then unsystematic higher definition search, intuiting the completion of the literature documentary research was also used. The goal of these first steps was the establishment of the theoretical foundation of the research and the development of interaction assay protocol. After the fulfillment of these methodological procedures and data collection, through the interaction test, it was performed a comparison between data in the form of triangulation. This process culminated in the drafting of observations on the Dota2 game aiming to provide bases for the Game Design with encouraging collaboration between MOBA players. "The remarks may serve to aid the professionals working in the development of electronic games (Game Design) whose office impacts directly usability aspects of new games. Os designers estão atuando em diversas frentes e empreendendo na busca pela transformação de mundo. A sustentabilidade é um valor que esses designers-empreendedores frequentemente compartilham. Não se trata de empreendedorismo por necessidade (não são obrigados a empreender para sobreviver) ou por oportunidade (não empreendem em uma oportunidade de mercado cuja relação entre risco e retorno seja claramente vantajosa). Trata-se de um empreendedorismo por engajamento, pois as empresas são criadas por acreditarem na causa da sustentabilidade. Inicialmente, de fato, a sustentabilidade é uma vocação de seus negócios, sendo característica dos projetos que elaboram e implementam e, assim, identificamos o conceito de projeto sustentável. Logo, porém, eles entendem a dificuldade de sustentar seus negócios em um sistema socioeconômico que atribui uma importância secundaria à sustentabilidade. Se torna necessária uma elaboração estratégica que permita uma sustentabilidade projetual, na qual a sustentabilidade compõe um par com o projeto, não exatamente como sua vocação, mas como característica substantiva que garanta sua possibilidade. O objetivo da dissertação é compreender a sustentabilidade projetual nos processos elaborados pelos designer-empreendedores. Para tanto, a presente pesquisa exploratória realizou entrevistas em profundidade com designers-empreendedores. Além de identificar e definir os conceitos citados, a pesquisa descreve as características desses empreendimentos e dos designer-empreendedores.
The designers are performing on several fronts and undertaking the search for world transformation. Sustainability is a value that these entrepreneurial designers often share. They are not entrepreneurship by necessity (they are not obliged to undertake to survive) or by opportunity (they do not engage on a market opportunity whose relationship between risk and return is clearly advantageous). This is an entrepreneurship through engagement, because companies are created because they believe in the cause of sustainability. Initially, in fact, sustainability is a trend of its business, being characteristic of the projects elaborated and implemented, and thus we identify the concept of sustainable project. Soon, however, they understand the difficulty of sustaining their business in a socioeconomic system that attaches secondary importance to sustainability. It becomes necessary a strategic elaborateness that allows a project sustainability, in which sustainability works with the project, not exactly as its trend, but as a substantive characteristic that guarantees its possibility. The objective of the dissertation is to understand the sustainable project in the processes elaborated by the designer-entrepreneurs understand the articulation of the processes of strategic design and entrepreneurship, in the scope of sustainability, elaborated by the entrepreneur-designers. To this end, the present exploratory research conducted in-depth interviews with designers-entrepreneurs. In addition to identifying and defining the aforementioned concepts, the research describes the characteristics of these enterprises and entrepreneur-designers.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the influences that Information Retrieval Systems such as online Search Engines and Databases have on designers' early searching strategies. The study involves the observation of designers transforming early design language into query 'keyword' language for the operation of Information Retrieval Systems and how this transition causes a shift in early design exploration. This transformation is referred to in this research as the CLASS activity; Converting Language from Abstract Searching to Specific. Findings show a common pattern across the activity of both professional and advanced student designers. Information Retrieval Systems are seen to drive the searching process into specific, explored domains rather than stimulate an 'abstract' broad investigation. The IR systems are built upon categories that are created to manage the information content. It is these categories that require a person to use defined keywords and query sentences to operate the Information Retrieval Systems. The findings suggest that using Information Retrieval Systems prior to defining the scope of a design problem causes designers to prematurely focus on specific searching.

A tatuagem é uma antiga forma de inscrição corporal que apesar de sua idade não sofreu alterações em termos de materiais e técnicas. O desenvolvimento de tecnologias para a concepção de novas modalidades de intervenção orgânica terá ramificações em diversas áreas, permitindo o uso de novas interfaces epiteliais interativas (tatuagens dinâmicas responsivas), e criando novas vias de interação e comunicação incorporada. Em contraste à prática tradicional de imagens estáticas, as tatuagens dinâmicas (TDs) permitem a geração de imagens dinâmicas e interativas na pele. Nosso objetivo aqui é apresentar este novo campo de pesquisa e refletir sobre o papel do designer no projeto de tatuagens dinâmicas e as implicações destas tatuagens que transformam a pele em uma nova fonte de inscrições interativas e reversíveis.
Tattoo art is a very old form of bodily inscription. In spite of its long history, tattoo art has not changed very significantly in terms of applying new materials and techniques. The impact of developing technologies for the conception of new modalities of organic interventions will have ramifications in unprecedented areas, allowing the use of new interactive epithelial interfaces (responsive dynamic tattoos), and creating new ways of interaction and embodied communication. In contrast to traditional tattoo art of static images, new tattoo art (NT) allows the generation of dynamic interactive images on the skin. Our purpose here is to present this new field of research and speculate on the role of the designer in the design of dynamic tattoo images, and the implications of these tattoos which transform the skin into a new source of interactive and reversible inscription.

Victor Burton é um designer que dedicou a maior parte do seu trabalho ao livro. A fascinação por este objeto começou ainda na infância devido ao contato com as obras raras da biblioteca da família, o que aguçou o desejo de se tornar designer exclusivamente para projetar livros. Sua atuação no mercado editorial brasileiro começou no final dos anos 1970, na editora Confraria dos Amigos do Livro. Como o maior interesse de Victor no livro é a relação entre texto e imagem, os livros iconográficos se tornaram seu principal objetivo e são nos livros desta natureza onde melhor conseguimos visualizar seu estilo. Victor desenvolveu uma linguagem gráfica própria que redefiniu o padrão do mercado editorial brasileiro. Numa época em que o projeto gráfico, principalmente a capa do livro, entre tantas cores e atrativos disputam a atenção do consumidor nas prateleiras das livrarias, já não é tão fácil identificar nem a editora nem a autoria do projeto gráfico e da capa. Entretanto, os livros de Victor Burton possuem um estilo que nos permite reconhecer sua assinatura. Desta forma, a questão que norteou este trabalho foi por que conseguimos identificar os livros do designer Victor Burton? Sendo assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi enumerar e identificar os aspectos gráficos que caracterizam o estilo deste designer nos livros iconográficos. Para isso, nos baseamos no método descritivo desenvolvido por Guilherme Cunha Lima, em O Gráfico Amador. A partir das características levantadas, pudemos identificar os principais elementos que nos permite reconhecer a autoria dos trabalhos desenvolvidos por Victor Burton. O uso desses aspectos gráficos reflete o trabalho meticuloso do designer Victor Burton que consegue criar uma narrativa visual auxiliando a leitura do texto através de uma nova leitura gráfica, sobretudo nos livros iconográficos
The designer Victor Burton has dedicated the most part of his work to the book. The interest for this object begun in childhood due the contact with rares books that are part of his familys collection, which increased the desire to become designer only to design books. When Victor started to work in the Brazilian editorial market at the end of the 1970s, at the Confraria dos Amigos do Livro house publisher. As the Victors main interest is the relationship between text and image, the iconographic books became his main goal and are in books of this nature that we can better visualize his style. Victor developed his own graphic language that has redefined the standard of the Brazilian editorial market. At a time when graphic design, especially the book cover, among many colors and attractive vie for consumer attention on the shelves of bookstores, is not so easy to identify neither the publisher nor the author of the graphic design and cover. However, the books of Victor Burton have a style that allows us to recognize your signature. Thus, the question that guided this study was why we can identify books of Victor Burton? Thus, the aim of this study was to enumerate and identify graphic aspects that characterize the style of this designer in iconographic books. For this, we based on descriptive method developed by Guilherme Cunha Lima in O Gráfico Amador. From the characteristics raised, we could identify the major elements that allow us to recognize the authorship of the work of Victor Burton. The use of these graphic aspects reflects the meticulous work of the designer Victor Burton who can create a visual narrative aiding reading the text through a new graphic reading, especially in iconographic books.

Le design et la production d’un article de mode impliquent le talent et le savoir-faire du styliste. La définition de la matière première, la finalité et le produit qui incorpore le dessin ou modèle de mode sont autant d’éléments que le styliste doit prendre en compte pour réaliser une création. C’est pourquoi le processus intellectuel engagé dans l’élaboration de leurs créations se doit d’être protégé par le système juridique. Au vu de la propriété intellectuelle, de nombreux droits permettent de la protéger, comme les marques, le droit d’auteur et les dessins ou modèles industriels. La législation colombienne a opté pour le régime des dessins ou modèles industriels. L’étude conjointe du secteur de la mode en tenant compte de la création est très importante car sa définition apportera au styliste une garantie juridique quant à l’objet de protection ainsi que la portée du droit. Le dynamisme de la mode montre néanmoins que la législation actuelle est inadaptée. La thèse présente ainsi les problèmes existants et les solutions offertes par d’autres régimes juridiques pour la protéger de manière adéquate
The design and production of a fashion item involves the talent and expertise of the designer. Along the design process, the designer has to make decisions on raw materials, end use,and the actual product to which design is to be applied. This multi-faceted intellectual process behind the fashion design must be protected by the legal system. It is important to conduct an overall study of the fashion sector taking into account the creative process in order to provide the designer with legal guarantee in regards to the object to be protected and the scope of rights. There are well known instruments that protect intellectual property such as trademarks, copyright, design patents and industrial design law. Colombia has chosen to follow the industrial design law which, given the dynamic nature of fashion, seems to be inadequate. This thesis presents the existing problems in the Colombian legal system and the solutions offered by other legal regimes to protect fashion more adequately

.A dissertação assenta-se sobre a participação do designer em empresa do setor industrial cerâmico de SC, tendo como pano de fundo a problemática da Gestão do Design, tratada como um fator estratégico para a sobrevivência das organizações frente aos novos paradigmas de desenvolvimento. Seu objetivo centra-se na delimitação da forma de atuar do designer de superfície, buscando conhecer, compreender e descrever o papel desempenhado por esse profissional em seu cotidiano de trabalho, bem como seu nível de inserção no processo de Gestão do Design na empresa. Nesse sentido, o estudo contribuirá para definir o perfil do profissional atuante na área, de forma a evidenciar as necessidades de sua formação acadêmica, em termos de habilidades e conhecimentos requeridos na prática profissional. Assim, com base na metodologia de pesquisa qualitativa, realizou-se um estudo de caso com um grupo de profissionais de uma empresa do setor cerâmico de Santa Catarina, utilizando-se, para tanto, de entrevistas semi-estruturadas, de forma a proporcionar ampla liberdade de expressão aos entrevistados, privilegiando as percepções individuais e os significados dos sujeitos em relação às questões colocadas. Igualmente foram analisados dados acerca dos egressos dos cursos na área de Design de Superfície na UFSM (Santa Maria/RS), a fim de conhecer a realidade do mercado de trabalho em questão.
