Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents the design and implementation of Inverter system for driving three phase Induction motor using DSPACE DS1104 controller with the controlling objective space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) technique. AC motor drives are commonly used over DC motor drives because of their more advantages. Induction motor is the most commonly used AC motor drive for various industrial and domestic applications. The project will be commenced by a basic understanding of SVPWM inverter, components used in the design and study the mathematical equations of the Induction motor. The performance of SVPWM based Induction motor (IM) in open loop is presented with simulation. Here the hardware implementation of the three phase inverter which is fed to a three phase induction motor driven by DSPACE CP1104 is been implemented.

This paper compares five different motor types used in variable speed drives: a dc motor with a mechanical commutator and with electromagnetic or permanent magnets excitation, a cage induction motor, asynchronous cascade with a slip‐ring motor and a brushless motor with PM excitation. These motors are to be used for tram drive and they should all be characterised by identical external dimensions and a cooling system. Rated power and efficiency are the principal comparison criteria.

Abstract (sommario):
Variable speed drives and the importance of controlling the speed of existing motors have attracted much attention with the advent of new electrical devices and magnetic materials. This paper is a comprehensive review of the application of VFD in energy saving electric motors. The aim is to identify energy saving opportunities and apply variable speed drives to existing electric motor applications. In this paper the authors hope to provide useful information for future variable speed drive applications such as fans, pumps, coolers, ventilators and as electric car propulsion. In this study, a series of frequency changes has been tested as an induction motor speed regulation (VFD), which in the results of this frequency change research can regulate the speed of the induction motor. In this study, the frequency change is still regulated analogously by changing the resistor size on the PWM signal generator IC for the MOSFET driver. For that the next research is expected to change the frequency can be done digitally

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a DSP based implementation of simple and very useful control algorithm for the real-time efficiency optimization of the indirect vectorcontrolled induction motor drives. Conventional field-oriented induction motor drives operate at rated flux even at low load. To improve the efficiency of the existing induction motors, it is important to regulate the magnetization flux of the motor in the desired operating range. This paper presents techniques for minimizing power loss (the copper and core losses) of induction motor based on determination of an optimum flux level for the efficiency optimization of the vector-controlled induction motor drive. An induction motor (IM) model in d-q coordinates is referenced to the rotor magnetizing current. Thus the decomposition into d-q components in the steady-state motor model can be utilized in deriving the motor loss model. The algorithm offers a fast convergence. The complete closed loop vector control of the proposed LMC-based IM drive is successfully implemented in real-time using digital signal processor DSP TMS320LF2812 for 1HP motor induction motor. The close agreement between the simulation by Matlab/Simulink and the experimental results confirms the validity and usefulness of the proposed techniques. The proposed LMC in a comparison with conventional FOC can reduce total losses from 5% to 67.2% for all load ranges.

Abstract (sommario):
Over the past decade, research efforts have been made to decrease the number of power electronic devices needed in multi-motor drive systems in order to condense the overall complication and cost of the drive. This paper proposes speed control for a dual three-phase induction motor system driven by five-leg voltage source inverter (FL-VSI) which is used in industrial manufacturing processes. Industrial applications frequently need a number of variable speed electric drives. This technique uses five-leg inverter instead of using conventional two three phase inverters. In the majority of cases, these multi-motor drive systems need independent control of individual motors. It is shown recently that it is possible to separately control two three-phase induction machines supplied through a five-leg voltage source inverter, with one inverter leg being common to both machines. The entire performance of the speed control for the five leg voltage source inverter fed dual-motor drive system is investigated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software.

Abstract (sommario):
EVs (Electric Vehicles) have been rejuvenated over the last decades while the motor drive technologies are still evolving. This paper provides a review of electrical motor drive technologies used in EV applications, with a performance comparison of candidate machines and their drive topologies. EV applications demand high efficiency, high torque density, high reliability, and wide speed range while reducing weight, complexity, total costs and environmental impact. In the literature, DC (Direct Current) motors, IMs (Induction Motors) and PM (Permanent Magnet) motors can be generally found in marketplace whilst RMs (Reluctance Motors) have been researched for some time and are nearing commercial availability. This paper evaluates the performance of these four main types of electrical motor drives for EV propulsion applications using analytical methods. PM motors may offer the best performance in terms of torque density and compactness but the cost is the highest (primarily dominated by rare-earth permanent magnets), limiting their widespread application in mass production EVs. DC motors have their own merits but suffer from limited power density and necessity for maintenance. Induction motor drives are a mature and proven technology. In particular, squirrel-cage IMs are robust, reliable and inexpensive, striking a balance between system cost and complexity, power density and extended speed range. Reluctance motors can provide a good torque density and cost effective EV drive solutions. Their drawbacks can also be overcome by the use of power electronic converters and advanced control strategies. Induction and reluctance motor drives are well suited for cost sensitive mass production EV applications. Looking to the future, increased hybridization may be a way forward in industry which combines attractive features of different electrical machines and control algorithms and still offer much promise in performance and total cost. At last, reliability study on EVs requires historical information and driving patterns, demanding research expertise in eco-sociology, human behaviors as well as human-machine interface.

Abstract (sommario):
Sensor less induction motor drives are widely used in industry for their reliability and flexibility. However, rotor flux and speed sensors are required for vector control of induction motor. These sensors are sources of trouble, mainly in hostile environments, and their application reduces the drive robustness. The cost of the sensors is not also negligible. All the reasons lead to development of different sensor less methods for rotor flux and mechanical speed estimation in electrical drives. The paper deals with the speed estimators for applications in sensor less induction motor drive with vector control, which are based on application of model adaptive, based sliding mode observer methods. This paper presents the development and DSP implementation of the speed estimators for applications in sensor less drives with induction motor.

Abstract (sommario):
Induction motor drives are commonly used for applications with vast variations in mechanical load for torques under nominal values. HVAC loads are among these loads. The most ideal scheme for induction motor drive design should include drive loss reduction, or efficiency improvement, proportional to load torque such that optimal performance of drive is not affected. In this paper, using analytical methods, an accurate model is proposed for induction motor drive design. This model allows us to utilize real control and classical control theory for better performance of drive control system. The most damaging mechanical load for induction motor drive is impulse load or so-called periodic load. A scheme proposed for power loss control includes loss control for this type of load, meanwhile, robustness of drive system and stator frequency stability are retained. Main advantages for this scheme are applicability and implementation on various induction motor drives with various powers, without any specific requirements and the least possible computation for the processors.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper proposes induction motor drive control method which uses minimal number of sensors, providing only DC-link current as a feedback signal. Improved DC-link current sampling scheme and modified asymmetrical switching pattern cancels characteristic waveform errors which exist in all three reconstructed motor line-currents. Motor linecurrent harmonic content is reduced to an acceptable level, eliminating torque and speed oscillations which were inherent for conventional single sensor drives. Consequently, use of single current sensor and line-current reconstruction technique is no longer acceptable only for low and medium performance drives, but also for drives where priority is obtaining a highly accurate, stable and fast response. Proposed control algorithm is validated using induction motor drive hardware prototype based on TMS320F2812 digital signal processor.

Abstract (sommario):
Induction motors are popularly used in various applications because of the proposed modest construction, substantiated process, and limited size of specific power. The traditional AC traction drives are experimentally analyzed. There is a high circulating current due to the high Common-Mode Voltage (CMV). The high Circulating Bearing Current (CBC) is a major problem in conventional two-level voltage source inverter fed parallel-connected sensor-based induction motors for traction applications. A sensorless method is well known for shrinking costs and enhancing the reliability of an induction motor drive. The modified artificial neural network-based model reference adaptive system is designed to realize speed estimation methods for the sensorless drive. Four dissimilar multilevel inverter network topologies are being implemented to reduce CBC in the proposed sensorless traction motor drives. The multilevel inverter types are T-bridge, Neutral Point Clamped Inverter (NPC), cascaded H-bridge, and modified reduced switch topologies. The four methods are compared, and the best method has been identified in terms of 80% less CMV compared to the conventional one. The modified cascaded H-bridge inverter reduces the CBC of the proposed artificial neural network-based parallel connected induction motor; it is 50% compared to the conventional method. The CBC of the modified method is analyzed and associated with the traditional method. Finally, the parallel-connected induction motor traction drive hardware is implemented, and the performance is analyzed.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper proposes a method for separation of broken rotor bar failures from low-frequency load torque oscillation in direct torque control (DTC) induction motor drives by using vq voltage and iq current components’ spectra. The effect of load torque oscillation should be considered in induction motor drives for reliable broken bar fault detection. Induction machine drivers are run in DTC mode to control its torque and speed. In practice, the presence of load torque fluctuation may sometimes cause false positive alarms on stator current spectrum. However, discerning of broken rotor bar failure from low-frequency load variation for DTC drives remains unexplored. Experimental results show that by using the proposed method broken rotor bar failure can be reliably detected in the presence of low-frequency load torque oscillation in DTC induction motor drives.

Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses developments in electric motors and drives that are boosting efficiency, simplifying setup, and cutting costs. New drives offer compact designs and simplified installation, and start-up. An inexpensive controller for single-phase ac induction motors has been developed by Anacon Systems Inc. of Springfield, Montana. The controller is targeted to a huge installed base of fan, pump, and compressor motors. The company also has introduced a Smartcom series of motor controllers specifically designed for residential and light commercial Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) applications. New products currently under development by Anacon Systems will extend the range of offerings to cover power ranges up to 2 hp. The company also plans to offer controllers for three-phase motors. A new energy-efficient integrated ac drive/motor, combining plug-and-play installation and compact design, has been introduced by ABB Drives & Power Products of New Berlin, Wisconsin. The new drive has power cables at the bottom rather than on the side. The drive's compact size allows it to fit into many retrofit spaces and frees up panel space that would be occupied by a larger drive, according to ABB.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a current sensorless vector controlled induction motor drive with only speed sensor present in the system. The same performance as that of normal vector control drives (which uses two current and one speed sensor) is achieved with the proposed current sensorless drive. Such an approach is suitable for applications, where speed sensor cannot be eliminated. Thus, elimination of current sensor results in reduction of cost, increases reliability, reduced size and noise immunity. A new current estimation algorithm is proposed in this paper. The current estimation algorithm, estimates the current in two phase stationary reference frame. The proposed current estimation technique can also be used as a fault tolerant algorithm for normal vector controlled drives in case of current sensor failures. The performance of the current sensorless drive using the proposed current estimation technique is verified through MATLAB/SIMULINK. Extensive simulation results are presented to confirm the effectiveness of the algorithm. The algorithm is also experimentally validated with the laboratory developed prototype and the results are presented. The prototype is built around a dSPACE 1104 controller board.

Abstract (sommario):
A performance comparison of the conventional slip ring induction motor (SRIM) drive and the recently inducted variable frequency drive (VFD) in the sugar industry, for sugarcane preparation (chopping/ shredding of sugarcane), is carried out to assess their effectiveness and to explore better electric drives for the application. These high inertial machines demand high starting torque and mitigating means to reduce surge load due to the impact load imposed on them. Though, both the drives meet the requirement but the SRIM drives are subjected to huge slip power loss, low power factor, unequal load sharing problem for coupled motors and high drop in rpm, whereas VFDs are subjected to the problems of input current harmonics, high dV/dt stress and common-mode voltage (CMV). In this paper, along with the performance comparison a three/four-level multilevel inverter (MLI) fed open-end winding induction motor (OEWIM) drive is also proposed as an improvement over the existing ones.

Abstract (sommario):
Induction motors are widely employed in a variety of sectors, from household gadgets to industrial machinery. This mandates the deployment of an effective and safe speed control device. Induction motors may also run in either direction, which is beneficial in a variety of applications. The Induction Motor Speed and Direction Controller Project are designed to regulate the induction motor's speed and direction. Induction motors run on straight AC lines, and the amount of power they receive determines how fast they revolve. Through AC driver circuitry, we may regulate the power of the AC line to change the speed of the induction motor. A microcontroller from the Atmega family is utilized to provide PWM power to an opto-coupler, which drives the TRIAC that supplies power to the induction motor. The microcontroller receives instructions via a mobile phone connection to the system. The mobile phone sends DTMF signals to the system, which the system recognizes and responds to appropriately. A button is used to raise the speed of the induction motor, a button to change direction, and a button to lower the speed of the induction motor, according to the video. On the LCD, the entire procedure may be observed in real time. In this way, this project demonstrates how to control the speed and direction of an induction motor.

Sensorless induction motor drives are widely used in industry for their reliability and flexibility. It’s very important to improve the performance of speed estimation in some cases, especial at low speed of IM drives. The authors have proposed and developed a model reference adaptive system (MRAS) based on discrete time sliding mode algorithm(DTSM), which has high performance for sensorless induction motor drive in low speeds. The new algorithm obtains the identification flux using the classic MRAS, and the PI adaptive law in MRAS is replaced with the sliding mode observer which is acquired by the error function. This paper presents the theory, modelling, simulation and experimental results of the proposed DTSM-MRAS based sensorless direct torque control induction motor drives.

Abstract (sommario):
The relevance of investigation of induction motor electric drives with frequency converters having voltage source inverter with space-vector modulation is shown. The brief survey of researches of such matter is carried out. The aim of this article is to develop mathematical and computer model of frequency converter with space-vector modulation algorithms by means of Matlab Simulink, this model has to be implemented into the Matlab models of AC electric drives with induction and synchronous motors. To achieve such an aim, it needs to introduce techniques of electric drive theory, numerical techniques, techniques of algebraic equations system solution, techniques of computer simulation. The still two-phase framework is applied to describe the converter model. The two-level voltage source inverter is chosen for the investigation of modulation algorithms. To verify the mathematical model of space-vector modulation, the model of 5.5 kW induction motor is used. Induction motor and power switches are modelled by means of Matlab SimPowerSystems units. The results of simulation show the adequacy of the developed model in both steady state and transient modes. One can conclude the dependence of total harmonic distortion of the induction motor stator current from load torque, switching frequency of voltage source inverter’s power switches and stator current frequency for the electric drive with scalar control system.

This paper presents an analysis in the variation of sampling time of a synchronous motor drive that is self-controlled. The benefits of the synchronous motors are replacing classical induction and direct current (DC) motor drives. It is anticipated that they may be more significant in the imminent future. Because permanent magnet synchronous motors drives are preferred to perform vital tasks in most applications such as in the automotive industry and aerospace, the system reliability is usually an important consideration. Owing to these reasons, the sampling time of the drives have to be taken into consideration regarding how strong the impact of variation in sampling time can affect the drive performance. The drive is fed with three phase power and is utilized in speed regulation. Proportional integral (PI) regulatory approach is studied and is implemented in a PI-based speed regulatory system is presented. Simulation results of the motor current speed, and torque signals from the synchronous machine dynamics of the field flux are given. It was shown that an increase in sampling time results in the elimination of high frequency signal components.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper introduces a comprehensive examination of vector-controlled- (VC-) based techniques intended for induction motor (IM) drives. In addition, the evaluation and critique of modern control techniques that improve the performance of IM drives are discussed by considering a systematic literature survey. Detailed research on variable-speed drive control, for instance, VC and scalar control (SCC), was conducted. The SCC-based systems’ speed and V/f control purposes are clarified in closed and open loops of IM drives. The operations, benefits, and drawbacks of the direct and indirect field-oriented control systems are illustrated. Furthermore, the direct torque control (DTC) method for IMs is reviewed. Numerous VC methods established along with microprocessor/digital control, model reference adaptive control (MRAC), sliding mode control (SMC), and intelligent control (in terms of fuzzy logic (FL) and artificial neural networks (ANNs)) are described and examined. Uncertainties in the IM parameter are a considerable problem in VC drives. Therefore, this problem is addressed, and some studies that attempted to provide solutions are listed. Magnetic saturation and core loss impact are mentioned, as they are important issues in IM drives. Toward demonstrating the strengths and limitations of various VC configurations, a few experiments were simulated via MATLAB® and Simulink® that show the influence of machine parameter variation. Efforts are made to supply powerful guidelines for practicing engineers and researchers in AC drives.

AbstractThis article constitutes an introductory part of the special section on Intelligent Fault Monitoring and Fault-Tolerant Control in Power Electronics, Drives and Renewable Energy Systems. In the current issue of the journal, the first part of this section is published. Accepted articles are focussed mainly on the sensor-fault diagnosis methods for T-type inverter-fed dual-three phase PMSM drives, partial demagnetization, faults of the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) and online open phase fault detection (FD) in the sensorless five-phase induction motor drive implemented with an inverter output LC filter and third harmonic injection. Also, neural networks (NN) application in the detection of stator and rotor electrical faults of induction motors has been proposed in one of the papers, and the observer-based FD concept for unknown systems using input–output measurements was applied to a brushless direct current motor drive with unknown parameters.

Abstract (sommario):
Induction motor (IM) drives have tremendous applications as high-performance drives in things such as mine winders, machine tools, electric vehicles, and elevators. Usually, IM drives controlled by direct torque control are preferred for these applications due to their fast torque control and simplicity compared with IM drives with field-oriented control. Proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controllers are commonly used to control IM drives using DTC. Though these controllers are simple and provide excellent response for linear systems with constant set points, they perform poorly with variable set points and IM motor parameter uncertainties. Hence, many control techniques and optimization algorithms have been applied to improve IM drive performance. This paper proposes an IM drive controlled using direct torque control principles, but with the power converter operation optimized to give fast torque performance. The IM drive speed response is improved using an optimized fuzzy PID (FPID). The FPID optimization is accomplished by the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm. All components of the IM drive with the optimized control system were simulated using the MATLAB/Simulink platform. The responses of the introduced drive using three different controllers—conventional PID, FPID, and optimized FPID—were compared. The simulation results indicate that the optimized FPID controller provided the best performance in terms of speed and torque. Additionally, the performance of the IM with the proposed optimized FPID under parameter uncertainties was studied. The simulation results indicated the robustness of the optimized FPID controller against parameter uncertainties.

Abstract (sommario):
Direct torque control (DTC) is a method applied in induction motor (IM) drives to control the speed and torque of IM accurately and independently without feedback signal. However, in fast fourier transform (FFT) analysis, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the IM drives is high in DTC method with conventional inverter (CI). Therefore, the purpose of this study is to minimize the THD without affecting the drive’s performance. A DTC IM drive with multilevel inverter (MLI) is proposed in this study to reduce THD and preserve good speed and torque response of IM simultaneously. DTC IM drive with proposed MLI based THD minimization has several advantages over the DTC IM drive with CI, including higher generated output voltage with low distortion, operate under low switching frequency, and work with renewable energy. In order to prove the effectiveness of the proposed MLI based THD minimization in DTC IM drive, MATLAB Simulink is used to investigate the response of the IM drive and THD under different operating condition. From this study, proposed MLI based THD minimization DTC IM drive is able to reduce THD with a maximum of 13% in low speed operation as compared to DTC IM drive with CI.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper analyses the influence of unsymmetrical voltage sags on the increase of torque and speed deviation induction motor adjustable speed drives. The three following general types of induction motor drives control are analyzed: scalar controlled (V/Hz), rotor-field-oriented (RFO) and direct-torque-controlled(DTC). The analytical expression for variations of dc link voltage incorporated into the corresponding drive models and formulas for assessment of current/torque deviation are derived depending on the applied control algorithm. Afterwards, the presented theoretical results for the deterioration of motor drive performance due to voltage sags are validated experimentally. Measurements of sag-caused mechanical vibrations are used for the additional verification of the obtained results. .

Abstract (sommario):
These harmonics are higher than essential frequencies and cause Total Harmonics Distortion (THD) which increases the rms current and generates more warmth in the load. Numerous techniques are used to suppress the harmonics to limit the warmth in the load. Another procedure is utilized in this work to limit THD and the method to beat the low exhibition of a traditional PWM (pulse width tweak) control. In this work, the desired output voltage is accomplished by contrasting the desired sinusoidal waveform (adjusting signal) with a high frequency three-sided waveform (transporter signal). Industrial applications demands high force and long life expectancy motor drives. Three phase motor drives have restricted force density consequently Multiphase motor drives are better solutions for high force density and substantial loads. In this work a 12 level cycloconverter is designed to drive three Phase load. The loads used in the industries almost nonlinear loads like motors. Thusly, because of these nonlinear loads extra harmonics incited at the output of the 12 level cycloconverter drive with major frequency. The harmonics and THD got using our proposed technique is thought about using Mat lab/Simulink

Abstract (sommario):
This paper proposes a high efficient advanced DC-DC converter by name Triple-Lift converter in the front end of Induction motor (IM) drives system. The conventional IM drives use PWM rectifier, boost converter, buck-boost converter, etc., in the front end which holds inadequacy in pump-up voltage and deprived output current. The Triple-Lift converter (TLC) implemented in the system employs voltage lift technique and produces the output voltage in arithmetic progression. The voltage source inverter (VSI) coupling IM derives a wide range of DC input (ripple free) from TLC which can be adopted for high rated motors with good efficiency. Simulation results using MATLAB show the effectiveness of the proposed converter arrangement for IM drives.

Abstract (sommario):
DC brushless motors are widely adopted for their simplicity of control, even in sensorless configuration, and their high torque density. On the other hand, induction motors are very economical due to the absence of permanent magnets; for the same reason they can easily be driven in the flux-weakening region to attain a wide speed range. Nevertheless, high dynamic induction motors drives, based on field-oriented (FOC) or predictive control, require large amounts of computing power and are rather sensitive to motor parameter variations. This paper presents a simple DTC induction motor control algorithm based on a well-known BLDC control technique, which allows to realize a high dynamic induction motor speed control with wide speed range. The firmware implementation is very compact and occupies a low amount of program memory, comparable to volt-per-Hertz- (V/f-) based control algorithms. The novel control algorithm presents also good performance and low current ripple and can be implemented on a low-cost motion control DSP without resorting to high-frequency PWM.

The Squirrel Cage Induction Motor (SCIM) with advanced power electronic inverters presents the greater advantages on cost and energy efficiency as compared with other industrial solutions for varying speed applications. In recent, the inverter fed induction motors are being popular in the industries. These inverter fed-motors are recently gathering great recognition for multimegawatt industrial drive applications. In this present paper, a dynamic simulation model of PWM inverter fed SCIM with direct torque control jointly has been presented and analyzed in the recent MATLAB/Simulink environment. From the proposed simulation model, the transient behavior of SCIM has been analysed for healthy as well as for stator inter-turn fault condition. The dynamic simulation of induction motor is one of the key steps in the validation of design process of the electric motor and drive system. It is extremely needed for eliminating probable faults beforehand due to inadvertent design mistakes and changes during operation. The simulated model gives encouraging results with reduced harmonics [1]. By using the model, the successful detection of stator inter-turn fault of the SCIM is carried out in the transient condition. Therefore, early stator fault detection is possible and may avoid the motor to reach in the catastrophic conditions. Therefore, may save millions of dollars for industries.

Abstract (sommario):
In modern industry, majority of the mechanical elements are driven by either induction motors or special motors like servo motors, synchronous motors, BLDC motors. In order to drive the motors and to vary the speed of the motors, electronics drives are required. Since the drives are powered with three phase AC, if the power grid has power quality issue, which directly reflects on to the power electronics drives. As per Indian grid standards, power quality is defined as harmonics, surge, sag, swell, which was formulated in the year of 2003 and further revision was done in 2010. But in the recent day’s majority of the industries are constructed in same place (special economic zone), unpredicted industrial loads are increased and inserted in to existing running load, so eventually the power quality definition also changes and even sometimes connections are made as temporary for certain loads. Although these motors typically tolerate variations in utilization voltage, power quality professionals continue to spend a great deal of time answering questions about proper utilization voltage for a given motor. The voltage quality factors that create the most serious problems and confusion in the field include nominal utilization voltage that does not match the motor nameplate, proper voltage sag ride-through protection for the motor control circuitry, and phase-to-phase voltage imbalance. In review article, modern industry premises failure of components list and condition of power quality will be surveyed in various segments. Various failure of inverter drives namely, switching failure, commutation failure, common mode voltage problem, bearing current issues, harmonics etc., are discussed in details from various research article and presented in this review.
