Indoor air quality (IAQ) is an important issue, considering that modern people spend most of their time indoors in houses, workplaces, recreation areas. IAQ has a serious impact on human health, comfort, performance, and wellbeing. In order to minimize the negative consequences, considerable efforts are made to assure the high quality of the indoor air. In the present paper, indoor pollution is analysed in light of its effect on IAQ and human health. The indoor pollutants are due to the presence of higher concentrations of chemical species, physical processes or biologicals in the ambient air.

Abstract (sommario):
Factors affecting risk management of indoor campus recreation facilities were studied. Campus recreation directors of 4-year colleges/universities in North America who held memberships in the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) responded to a paper survey consisting of 32 dichotomous yes/no and close-ended multiple-choice questions. Questions addressed staff certification requirements, use of waivers, number of automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) in the facility, communication and security devices, health screening of participants, and in-person supervision of the facility. Results showed that facilities are open to participants extensively throughout the 7-day week, thus requiring directors to ensure their risk management procedures are up to date—most notably staff members' CPR and first aid certification, as well as AED training.

Abstract (sommario):
The range of sports and recreation facilities’ offer should be very wide in order for all social groups of the examined environment to have access to sports and recreation facilities. Therefore, Poznan City Hall should take into account all difficulties that limit the access to these facilities when preparing management policy of sports and recreation infrastructure and its functioning. That is why the main goal of this study is to recognize difficulties limiting the access to sports and recreation facilities in this city. The research carried out at indoor tennis courts (16 facilities), indoor swimming polls (12 facilities) and fitness clubs (11 facilities) in Poznan covered 1159 service recipients (using the services of a given sports and recreation facility). The author-constructed questionnaire addressed to the service recipients (residents of the city of Poznan who use the services offered at the examined sports and recreation facilities). Furthermore, the service recipients were divided into a group of people doing sports competitively and a group of recipients who have never practiced sports as professional athletes. The validated questionnaire sent to the examined service recipients included suggestions of difficulties that may limit the access to sports and recreation facilities in the city of Poznan. Further analysis of the importance of difficulties that limit the access to sports and recreation facilities may allow indicating the reason why recreational activity of residents is limited. A lower level of satisfaction and thus a lower rating of the respondents was obtained by a set of features constituting, according to the respondents, difficulties limiting the access to the use of sports and recreation facilities (high prices and too great of a distance of the sports and recreation facility from the place of residence).

Abstract (sommario):
Directors of campus recreation at NIRSA colleges and universities in the US and Canada were surveyed to determine: (a) the number of schools that have built, within the preceding three years, major indoor as well as major outdoor campus recreation facilities and the number of institutions planning to do so within the next three years; (b) the usage and scheduling priorities covering all campus recreation facilities; (c) the sources of funding for the construction of these major facilities and sites; and (d) the sources of funding for operational activities for campus recreation. The data were analyzed in terms of school size, location, and whether public or private in nature. The findings revealed that 56% of the institutions surveyed had either recently built new major indoor student recreation centers or were planning to do so, within the next three years. In terms of major outdoor facilities or sites, the percentage was 41%. The majority of construction funds for indoor and outdoor facilities/sites as well as operational funds for programs and activities came from future student fees at most of the public schools. Typically, private schools had the majority of their monies for both indoor and outdoor facilities emanating from private sources while the majority of operating costs was covered through the general fund of the institutions. The sharing of facilities continues with both physical education and with athletics; and, the directors of campus recreation, generally speaking, felt comfortable with such arrangements, even when such arrangements include having athletic and physical education activities take precedence in usage over those of campus recreation.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: Recreation is an intentional activity geared towards accomplishment of self and social gains including refurbishment and collective connectivity. The overall objective of this study was to examine influence of gender on recreational participation. A critical literature review Methodology: The paper used a desk study review methodology where relevant empirical literature was reviewed to identify main themes and to extract knowledge gaps. Findings: Music followed by singing and dancing while the least popular indoor recreational activity was aerobics and snooker/pool. The most popular outdoor recreational activity was walking while the least popular outdoor recreational activity for women was swimming and playing cards. Frequency of participation in both indoor and outdoor recreational activities by women was influenced by the age. Frequency of participation in both indoor and outdoor recreational activities was not influenced by the family size or the number of children. Frequency of participation in the indoor and outdoor recreational activities by women was not influenced by their monthly income. The family size was not a determining factor for participation in both indoor and outdoor recreational activities Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: This study recommended that the county government should set aside land for developing various recreational facilities within the informal settlement areas to be accessed by all residents to mitigate time constraints; for example, construction of swimming pools since swimming is reported as the least popular outdoor activity.

Abstract (sommario):
Indoor ski slope is an innovative type of active indoor recreation. This new urban character is simulating the concept of mountain ski resort and is considered to be a strong attraction point all year-round. Due to a big scale and complexity, sustainable integration into an urban context should be very carefully considered. Economical, social, environmental and aesthetic impact on surrounding territories is an important factor to be evaluated. International practice shows that the appropriate integration of the above mentioned typology into urban parks increase their popularity and use of the recreation zone. On the other hand, the alien architecture and egocentric dominance of complexes can cause conflict with the existing urban territories and natural environment. Having indoor ski slopes in mind at the stages of regional and town territorial planning is an important point. Only complex development can bring positive results for sustainable town development, town economy, tourism and social life.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between parental attitudes toward nature and their child's outdoor recreation and how these attitudes related to their reports of their child's health problems. The sample for this study consisted of parents of 6- to 13-year-old children from the United States, who accessed the survey from an informational website for gardeners between Mar. and Aug. 2009. Surveys were collected until 142 completed questionnaires were received. The online survey included questions about parents' attitude toward nature, parents' attitudes toward their child's outdoor recreation, an inventory of potential children's health problems, the time children spent in various indoor and outdoor activities, and demographic questions. Descriptive statistics were used to tabulate mean scores on the parental attitude toward nature (PAN) scale and parental attitude toward their child's outdoor recreation (PACOR) scale, both of which indicated overall positive views. Pearson's product–moment correlations indicated statistically significant relationships between the PAN scale, the PACOR scale, and time children spent outdoors. Relationships between time spent indoors on video games or watching television and health problems in children were identified. Time spent outdoors in free play was inversely related to reports of health problems in children.

Abstract (sommario):
Indoor group cycling (IGC) is a popular type of aerobic activity performed on a stationary bike, combining both mental and physical aspects of training through the use of imagery (Johnny G. Spinning Instructor Manual, 1999). Thompson, Durand-Bush, & O'Sullivan, (2003) investigated the different types of imagery cues provided by instructors and their effects on the overall IGC experience. However, the purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of imagery cues provided by IGC instructors, as perceived by class participants. The sample included four certified IGC instructors and 15 class participants. The instructors were videotaped while teaching their IGC class, after which class participants completed a questionnaire, took part in a stimulated recall session (Calderhead, 1981), and participated in a semi-structured interview to assess the effectiveness of the imagery cues provided by the instructors. Nine categories and three sub-categories of cues were provided in varying frequencies by the instructors however, the class participants found only certain types to be effective. They preferred simple cues that were given following a logical progression and were synchronized with the music. Several practical implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Janse, van Rensburg Philippus Jacobus. "Investigating the feasibility of an indoor aquatic centre for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/791.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of an Indoor Aquatic Centre for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole. The main problem was to establish the minimum aquatic facilities an Indoor Aquatic Centre must have, to be able to host National and International aquatic events. The sub problems identified to address the main problem were as follows: - Should accommodation be available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should medical facilities be available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should there be a gymnasium at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should there be food malls available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Will sports tourism in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole benefit from an Indoor Aquatic Centre? In this study the researcher discusses current tourism opportunities, possible sports tourism opportunities and the current aquatic facilities the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole has to offer. From the discussion regarding these issues it was found that the metropole do offer many attraction opportunities including the following: - Adventure and Sport; - Agriculture; - Arts and Culture; - Business and Conferencing; - Coastal and Beaches; - Entertainment and Shopping; - Historical; - Wild Life and Nature. Adventure and Sport attractions contribute to sports tourism in the metropole and an Indoor Aquatic Centre could enable the metropole to improve sports tourism figures to the metropole. Sports tourism is defined as any tourism that is linked with a sports event. The conclusion can be made that the main initiative for sports tourism is to host a major sporting event to attract tourists. Adding other tourist attractions makes the destination more attractive. It is also important that the community is educated and informed about sports tourism so that the tourist and the community benefits from the event. Indoor Aquatic Centres found in countries like Australia, Canada, Europe, Russia, The Far East, United Kingdom and the United States of America, were discussed to identify the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre. The literature study has shown that the Indoor Aquatic Centre should be a multi purpose centre with a minimum of two heated pools and leisure facilities included. This will enable the centre to generate different streams of income to enhance sustainability. The aquatic centre should also be designed to host National and International events, but not necessarily for Olympic Games events. An empirical study was done to see if the respondents agree on the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre, identified by the literature study and if they agree that sports tourism within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole will benefit from an Indoor Aquatic Centre. The conclusion of the empirical study is that the respondents’ view correlate with the information found during the literature study regarding the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre listed as follows: - The minimum number of heated pools are two consisting of a fifty metre ten lane pool and a twenty five metre ten lane pool; - A food mall that consists of a restaurant, fast food stalls and a food store; - Medical facilities, conference facilities, gymnasium and other leisure facilities must also be available; - Accommodation facilities must be available and consists of two and three bedroom fully serviced apartments; - The Indoor Aquatic centre must be able to have seating for 2000 people and parking for 1000 vehicles. The study has addressed the main problem and the sub problems, but further research needs to be conducted regarding the funding of the Indoor Aquatic Centre as this issue was not successfully addressed. More information is needed regarding the different ways of funding and who the stakeholders should be in this process.

Scheepers, Janine. "Reverberating Architecture Outdoor Recreational Equipment Centre". Diss., 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29810.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Reverberating architecture exists through the echoes of its creative or architectural image. It is an architecture where the being of that architectural image reverberates and is felt throughout the whole transformative process until its echoes engage with the inner experience of the onlooker. These reverberations might impact the onlooker in such a way that it provokes a new architectural image within him or her. My design thinking was very much influenced by this thesis theme, as well as the concept of an indoor-outdoor system that intertwines. The concept is to design an outdoor recreational equipment centre with speciality shops for mountain biking, kayaking and canoeing, hiking and climbing. This retail complex varies from conventional retail centres in that it is an interactive retail store. This implies that the equipment can be tried before purchasing it. The architecture and the extreme sport activities [climbing, the mountain bike track and the kayak and canoe channel] would be used as communicating devices for specific brands. A precarious balance was needed between the plan, the architecture and the extreme sports existing within the architecture. Therefore a language was developed where by architecture not only responded to the site, but also with the movement happening in and around the site.

Abstract Potent though it was, baseball’s widespread public appeal, presented in the preceding chapters and to be further elucidated in succeeding ones, cannot be completely appreciated without grasping the eager acceptance of the game’s lusty offspring, eventually to be known collectively as softball. in effect, baseball became the mother of invention, for the inability to satisfy the well-nigh insatiable demand for regulation baseball because of lack of space in the congested urban areas, combined with the want of baseball equipment in recreation centers, YMCAs, schools, colleges, and Turnvereins, inspired invention of a facsimile of the national game suitable for playing in limited space, indoor or out, even all year round.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter focuses on the air in surroundings where everyone lives and breathes and the concerns that should be considered as we continue to work and engage in recreational activities. It describes the principal atmospheric pollutants in the urban environments where most people spend the majority of their time. It also reviews the fundamental factors that affect indoor air quality and discusses some common indoor air contaminants. The chapter investigates the air quality in major urban areas around the world, revealing serious problems in some cities that are a direct consequence of the use of energy in all its traditional and modern applications. It highlights the combustion of fossil fuels in motor vehicles, in space heating and cooling, in power generation and industrial processes, and the incineration of waste materials as major contributors to atmospheric pollution.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract FieldTurf Inc.’s rise as a major player in artificial turf for athletic playing surfaces came from its innovative and aggressive competitive moves. In 1997, Field Turf, led by a skillful, innovative, and experienced founder, “revolutionized” the artificial turf industry with entrepreneurial actions. FieldTurf’s actions included developing a new turf made of long synthetic fibers woven into a base made of sand and recycled rubber pellets-giving it the look, feel, and drainage of real grass and causing fewer injuries-and targeting it to low-profile fields (e.g., indoor soccer and high school fields). Gradually, the new turf started to sell itself, including to high-profile fields (e.g., college and professional football fields). It was a significant improvement over the traditional AstroTurf, sold by the industry leader Southwest Recreational Industries, Inc., which had dominated with about three-fourths of the U.S. market. Shortly, Southwest responded and introduced its own version of the new turf but was slowed considerably by FieldTurf’s legal actions citing patent infringement. Southwest and other rivals, who were blind to and uncertain of the wisdom of FieldTurf’s entrepreneurial moves, were somewhat slow to respond at first, providing a window of opportunity for FieldTurfto become one of the industry leaders.

Abstract (sommario):
Let’s start with the ‘ionization’ of an atom, the formation of an ion by the ejection of an electron when the atom is struck by a sufficiently energetic photon. This kind of process is the basis of the operation of early versions of photochromic glasses, which darken when exposed to bright sunlight, specifically in response to the high-energy ultraviolet component of sunlight that is present outdoors. That kind of photochromic glass was made by adding silver and copper nitrates to molten glass. As the glass cools, small crystallites of the salts form. The crystallites are too small to scatter or absorb visible light, so the glass appears transparent. Now we step into the solid glass and watch what happens when we step outside and ultraviolet photons rain down on us. We see a photon plunge into the glass and strike a copper ion, Cu+. The photon has enough energy to expel an electron from the ion, so forming Cu2+. We see the ejected electron wander off through the solid. Almost immediately, however, it is captured by a silver ion, Ag+, converting it to a silver atom, Ag. (Recall that Ag is the chemical symbol for silver, from the Latin argentum.) Sunlight has induced a redox reaction, an electron transfer reaction (Reaction 5). Now, as we continue to watch, several Ag atoms cluster together to give a microscopic dot of silver metal. These little clusters act like tiny shutters to block some of the light passing through the glass, and the image is dimmed. The clusters of atoms survive for a short time, but inevitably break up and release the additional electron back into the solid. It finds its way back to the strongly attracting double positive charge of a Cu2+ ion and attaches to it, so recreating the original Cu+ ion. However, if you stay outside in the sunlight, ionization and Ag atom formation continue, and your glasses stay dimmed. Only when you come back indoors and the ultraviolet radiation no longer reaches you do the ionization processes cease, and the glass reverts to being fully transparent.

This article develops an analysis on the history of educational spaces in São Paulo, based on contemporary issues involving the Centro Educacional Unificado (CEU, Unified Educational Center) a complex of educational, cultural and recreational institutions, deployed by the city of São Paulo(2002-2004), in the low-income areas that showed a lack of social facilities, public spaces and urban infrastructure. CEUs were hailed by their developers and specialized media as urbanity inductors because they create a distinctive public space, which referred to the formal city, serving both the public and the local school community. This historical analysis is read from three points of view: the school is at the same time a public policy, an architectural typology and an urban intervention.Studying that analytical framework, this work sought the understanding on how the regular public schools ended up becoming this multi-proposal facility which groups a series of institutions that were traditionally distributed through the city, equalizing the provision of services to underserved populations, however stresses the relation between the school and the city.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Introduction: Paneurhythmy is a unique Bulgarian and European recreational physical activity, appropriate for a proactive approach in maintaining and improving health. The aim of the present study is to find out if there are changes in the affective balance and the feeling of happiness with adults practicing Paneurhythmy. Method: The subjects (n=155) of the experimental study were adults (18-69 years old), divided into two groups: an experimental group (EG, n=77, mean age 41.7), participating in a course of Paneurhythmy, and a control group (CG, n=78, mean age 41.8). Paneurhythmy courses were held indoors in the evening during the autumn-winter season. The experimental group subjects conducted an average of 22 Paneurhythmy lessons (SD 7.23). The following questionnaires were used to measure the effect of the experiment: 1) Fordyce Emotions Questionnaire (FEQ) – Fordyce, 1988, Bulgarian adaptation by Zsheliaskova-Koynova & Ianovska (2008). 2) PANAS (Watson, Clark & Tellegen, 1988), Bulgarian version by Yordanova (2006). Results: Comparing the results of the EG and the CG, we found the following significant differences: higher positive emotions (t152=2.67, p=.008), lower negative emotions (t152=2.15, p=.033) and stronger feeling of happiness (t146=2.65, p=.009) with the EG after the Paneurhythmy training period. No changes were found in the CG for the same period. Conclusions: Paneurhythmy training significantly improved the affective balance and the feeling of happiness in adults who trained indoors during the autumn-winter season.

Abstract (sommario):
Covid-19 and restrictions intended to curb the pandemic have affected all areas of human life, but in particular physical activities and exercise habits. Reduction in the time devoted to physical activities have been reported in all demographic groups in various countries, leading to both physical (excessive weight, deterioration of posture, decreased eyesight, increased blood pressure, etc.) and psychological problems (depressive mood). Equestrians were less susceptible to certain restrictions because they could exercise outdoors and individually. Also, horse owners are more likely to regularly spend time with their equine sporting partners. It remains to be determined if and to what extent the pandemic has affected the physical activities of equestrians and whether equestrian physical activities provide a sustainable source of exercise during Covid-19 pandemic. In order to determine this, empirical evidence was collected using a questionnaire that was distributed among the multinational base population of equestrians. The working hypothesis is that patterns of physical activity while working with horses and taking care of the animals had to be adjusted due to restrictions, but overall equestrian activities were sustained and, in some cases, might have even increased. At the same time, the nature of activities is more likely to have been changed: for instance, privileging individual outdoor trainings over group indoor ones and non-competitive recreational riding over competitive activities.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Child cannabis exposure has increased in recent years – a trend that parallels changes to cannabis legality. Yet, little is known about household cannabis practices in the US. To address this gap, this study aims to examine household cannabis practices among a geographically diverse sample of US women of reproductive age. We also examine variations in household cannabis practices across states with varying cannabis policies. Methods: The study sample (N=114) included pregnant women and women with children in their home. In Spring of 2021, participants completed a single cross-sectional online survey that included demographic information and asked about cannabis use, household cannabis practices (e.g., indoor smoking, cannabis storage), and cannabis use risk perceptions. We analyzed data in March 2022 using descriptive statistics. Results: A total of 69.23% and 42.98% of participants reported cannabis products were allowed in their home and that smoking cannabis was permitted in one or more rooms of their home, respectively. Although not statistically significant, more women residing in states with recreational cannabis more frequently reported that smoking cannabis was allowed in one or more rooms of their home than women residing in states yet to legalize (47.73% vs. 40.00%, respectively). Conclusions: Amid rapidly shifting cannabis policies, further examination of household cannabis practices is needed. Public heath efforts should focus on reducing in-home cannabis exposure and promote safe storage and smoking practices for families with children in the home.

Abstract (sommario):
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Modern advances in the technical developments of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have elevated autonomous vehicle (AV) operations to a new height. Vehicles equipped with sensor based ADAS have been positively contributing to safer roads. As the automotive industry strives for SAE Level 5 full driving autonomy, challenges inevitably arise to ensure ADAS performance and reliability in all driving scenarios, especially in adverse weather conditions, during which ADAS sensors such as optical cameras and LiDARs suffer performance degradation, leading to inaccuracy and inability to provide crucial environmental information for object detection. Currently, the difficulty to simulate realistic and dynamic adverse weather scenarios experienced by vehicles in a controlled environment becomes one of the challenges that hinders further ADAS development. While outdoor testing encounters unpredictable environmental variables, indoor testing methods, such as using spray nozzles in a wind tunnel, are often unrealistic due to the atomization of the spray droplets, causing the droplet size distributions to deviate from real-life conditions. A novel full-scale rain simulation system is developed and implemented into the ACE Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel at Ontario Tech University with the goal of quantifying ADAS sensor performance when driving in rain. The designed system is capable of recreating a wide range of dynamic rain intensity experienced by the vehicle at different driving speeds, along with the corresponding droplet size distributions. Proposed methods to evaluate optical cameras are discussed, with sample results of object detection performance and image evaluation metrics presented. Additionally, the rain simulation system showcases repeatable testing environments for soiling mitigation developments. It also demonstrates the potential to further broaden the scope of testing, such as training object detection datasets, as well as exploring the possibilities of using artificial intelligence to expand and predict the rain system control strategies and target rain conditions.</div></div>

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, Europe has been moving towards a concept of inclusivity as highlighted by the sixteenth goal of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals Agenda that promotes peaceful and inclusive societies. (UN Dept. of Global Communications, 2015). The increasing awareness of social diversity has attracted the attention of designers who started to adopt an inclusive design approach and design products or services to be usable by as many people as reasonably possible, without the need for specialised adaptions. The inclusive design approach has been largely applied in adaptive sports to improve levels of functioning and independence in daily living activities and increase physical capability, physiological capacity, social status, and sense of belonging. Adaptive sports can become a way to promote involvement as an active part of the rehabilitation exercise to stimulate neuromotor recovery, particularly in children with disabilities (Canina et al., 2020). Recent research has demonstrated that climbing could be an excellent rehabilitation tool that involves the child with disabilities in a natural way. This sport exploits the propensity to play, to sport, to compete, to stimulate the execution of specific exercises, can transform this effort into a game and multiply the effectiveness of the rehabilitation process (Reljin, V., 2019). An intensive rehabilitation from an early age guarantees the recovery of part of their neuromotor abilities. In order to achieve better results in rehabilitation, adaptive sports must adopt a holistic approach to the user considering both the physical and the psycho-perceptual aspects, i.e. the ability to do it but also the feeling of fulfilment in doing it. However, current climbing walls do not include these aspects of the adaptive sport. An adaptive climbing wall design requires identifying a methodology that could lead to a coherent and effective solution, using explicit attention for inclusiveness. The paper describes the Design for Sustainable Behaviour (DfSB) approach adopted to design an adaptive climbing wall as a tool for the rehabilitation of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) by identifying the sustainable, inclusive requirements that consider children’s diversity. The DfSb approach, as user- and use-centred design that create preconditions for a sustainable everyday life, considers the sustainability aspects from two essential points of view. The user's sustainable behaviour, in which inclusiveness is a fundamental part of these attitudes, and the product's sustainability that uses new recycled materials create a more natural environment (similar to climbing in natural environments). Indeed, the project considers first the sustainable behavioural aspects, spreading climbing as a tool to improve the health conditions of CP children, introducing them to climbing by making it accessible and inclusive, intending to help children with different abilities to build trust and awareness of their potentialities, and a sense of accomplishment while training problem-solving and decision-making skills. As a second point of DfSB, the climbing wall and holds are designed with sustainable materials (waste material content) that provide the feeling of natural stone considering the entire product lifecycle. This paper shows how the DfSB approach can support the definition of design requirements of a training tool introducing children with CP to climbing as a natural approach to rehabilitation, making it accessible and inclusive. The project brings children with disabilities closer to the adapted sport through an indoor and democratic recreational activity. Bibliography 1. AA.VV. (2020). What is inclusive design? Abstract (sommario):
This project focused on forecasting freight logistics needs and developing and analyzing capacity plans for INDOT to consider. The forecast timeframe ranges from the 2020 to 2045; the commodities considered are those used in the FHWA framework. We considered five SSP (Shared Socio-Economic Pathways) scenarios that are in sync with those used by the IPCC (International Protocol for Climate Change). We also use the IPCC forecasts of world GDP and FHWA forecasts to develop county-level freight forecasts by commodity. A survey of industry participants, primarily in manufacturing, suggests that Indiana industries are tied to the rest of the country and the world for supply of inputs as well as for demand markets. Finally, we focus on three different industries—the recreational vehicle (RV) industry in Elkhart County, the furniture industry in Dubois County, and the Honda plant in Decatur County—to illustrate the impact of bill of materials and growth forecasts on forecasted congestion and potential capacity mitigation. Our results suggest that proactive capacity planning can enable INDOT to anticipate and ease congestion and ensure continued economic competitiveness for Indiana industries.
