Two decades passed by but the 1998 riot case is still remembered as a traumatic event for Chinese Indonesian people. Started from the economy crisis in July 1997 where Rupiah currency dropped and gave a huge damage to the Indonesia economy and politic section. This crisis made the poor non Chinese Indonesian envied the Chinese Indonesians. The riot reached its peak in May 1998 where Chinese Indonesians got harassed. Many Chinese Indonesians decided to leave Indonesia to live in other countries temporary or forever. Each generation keep reminding this incident made the young Chinese Indonesian generation aware of the Non Chinese Indonesian. This research aims to reveal the thoughts of Chinese Indonesian about the Indonesian government in handling the 1998 riot and examine the reason behind the Chinese Indonesian thoughts. The researcher also hoped that this research can be used as reference in other research related to this 1998 riot.Keywords : 1998 riot, Chinese Indonesians, Indonesia’s Government

In the Indonesian context, philosophy is described as human philosophy, which attempts to reflect and bring together basic and complicated concepts about humans and the surrounding life. Indonesian Philosophy is articulated by at least three meanings. To begin, Indonesian are evaluated via Western interpretations, notably colonialization, for the advantage of the West. The second perspective, views Indonesians through the lens of indigenous knowledge who develop a fighting spirit to escape oppression, this perspective has objective resistance and freedom from colonialism. The third perspective integrates Western and indigenous Indonesian philosophy, notably by integrating what is deemed beneficial in the West with indigenous Indonesian concepts. Indonesian people are viewed through their traditional lens and progress during the globalization and digitization era. Indonesian are described as imaginative individuals who possess cognitive, emotional and spiritual intelligence. The discussion of Indonesian philosophy as a separate identity involves three fundamental interconnected topics: Indonesian human conceptions, Indonesian culture, and Indonesian thoughts or souls. The description of Indonesian is the most difficult to explain because this description is not only about physical structures, the brain and intelligence, but also about how personality, life, oneness with nature, and merging chages of Indonesians can be distinguished from those of other.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to examine the contribution of multimodal resources in the Indonesian official tourism website in constructing and promoting the Indonesian national identity. Data were gathered from 7 verbal (linguistic) texts and 13 visual (nonlinguistic) texts presented in the Indonesian official tourism website. This study draws on Wodak et al’s (2009) discursive strategies of national identity construction and Kress and van Leuween’s (2006) theory of visual design. The results of the study show that the combination of verbal and visual texts in the Indonesian official tourism website contribute to the Indonesian national identity construction and promotion. The constructed and promoted Indonesian national identities are 1) Indonesia as a country with the rich natural landscape; 2) Indonesia as an archipelagic tropical country; 3) Indonesia as a maritime country; 4) Indonesia as a technologically advanced country; 5) Indonesia as a modern country; 6) Indonesia as a multicultural country; 7) Indonesia as a country with cultural richness; 8) Indonesians as people who are open to strangers or foreigners; 9) Indonesians as kind and friendly people; and 10) Indonesians as modern people.

In every culture, there is one important tradition: marriage. Marriage is important for Chinese Indonesians as it is considered to be a rite of passage. Due to globalization, many young Chinese Indonesians have little knowledge about Chinese traditions and tend to adopt Western wedding traditions as something more modern. Hence, Chinese Indonesian find new ways to convey their cultural identity as both Chinese and modern by using Chinese and Western wedding traditions. This article aims to identify the elements of Western culture that are commonly used in Chinese Indonesian weddings and the reasons they choose to use those elements. Western cultural elements commonly used in Chinese-Indonesian weddings can be seen in the wedding rituals, attire, and decorations. This article suggests that Chinese Indonesians who uses Western and Chinese wedding traditions create a new cultural identity as modern Chinese Indonesian. A hybrid culture emerges to form a contemporary or modern Chinese Indonesian wedding.

This article discusses four films entitled Ngenest (2015), Cek Toko Sebelah (2016), Susah Sinyal (2017), and Stip & Pensil (2017) in which Ernest Prakasa played a role, in the context of how the four films construct Chinese-Indonesian-ness. In the context of cinema, the appearance of Chinese-Indonesians on the screen during the New Order regime was scarce, and if there is any, the depiction was highly stereotyped. Only after Reform era in the late 1990s that Chinese-Indonesians and their culture began to re-appear on screen. Ernest Prakasa is one of few Chinese-Indonesians who publicly celebrates his Chinese-ness through entertainment platform. Ethnic identity theory applied on the discussion of the film cinematography and mise-en-scene to show what the films say about the concept of Chinese-Indonesian-ness. The findings show that Prakasa not only celebrates being a Chinese-Indonesian, but he also performs a self-mockery as Chinese-Indonesians by explicitly emphasizing the Chinese-Indonesians stereotypes. He also tries to re-establish inter-ethnic relationship and introduce contemporary Chinese-Indonesian-ness concept through his films.

The existence of Chinese descendants in Indonesia is obviously the parcel of well-nurtured pluralism and multiculturalism in this country. Chinese group in Indonesia remains minority among the population. However, this group reins around 70-80% Indonesian economic sectors. In terms of the feeling of nationalism, this group express it differently from other Indonesians. They obtained international recognition and yet they still acclaimed themselves as Indonesians. Plural Indonesian people have various responses and attitude towards this claim. Therefore, the main issue is not the type of nationalism, but is in the attitudes as Indonesian nation wherever and whenever it takes. This paper investigates some activities done by Chinese descendants through their organizations called INTI (Indonesian-Tionghoa Association).

The Indonesian language faces both challenges and opportunities in the future. On the one hand, the increasing globalization and the dominance of English as a global language pose a threat to the position and function of Indonesian. The main challenge to the position and function of Indonesian is the increasing dominance of English. English is the lingua franca of the world, and it is used in many international contexts. This can make it difficult for Indonesians to compete with native English speakers in the global market. Additionally, the use of English in Indonesia is increasing, especially among the younger generation. This can lead to a decline in the use of Indonesian, and a loss of the language's unique identity. The growing national consciousness in Indonesia is leading to a renewed appreciation for the language. This is reflected in the increasing use of Indonesian in government, education, and media. The future of the Indonesian language is uncertain. However, the language has the potential to thrive if Indonesians can embrace the challenges and seize the opportunities that lie ahead.

The research aimed to investigate the changes in the request strategies of Indonesians and Americans when they spoke English and Indonesian. In cross-cultural communication, several things needed to be considered to avoid misunderstanding, such as the addressee’s knowledge, experience, culture, and value. Different kinds of request strategies in intercultural communication between Indonesians and Americans could lead to misunderstanding. The research applied a qualitative research involving five Indonesian and American speakers who speak English and Indonesian fluently. The data were collected through multiple resources such as the Discourse Completion Test (DCT) with certain situations, which was distributed to the participants, and observation and interview during the meeting with the participants. The findings show that Indonesians tend to be more direct when they make requests in Indonesian, while they change into indirect request strategies when making requests in English, while American participants tend to be indirect when making requests in English even though some of them are direct and changing into direct strategies when making a request in Indonesian. It also reveals that Indonesians tend to be more direct than Americans when they use their native language. It contradicts other studies that say Indonesians tend to use indirect requests, which also influences Americans in how they make requests in Indonesia. Therefore, it is suggested that intercultural knowledge is important in language learning to avoid misunderstanding due to the differences in norms, values, and beliefs.

The purpose of improving the function of Indonesian to become an international language is to show the nation's identity and increase the nation's competitiveness. Indonesian has the potential to become an international language because of various factors such as the positive attitude of Indonesian speakers is characterized by Indonesians' pleasure to use Indonesian and has a sense of love, pride and loyalty to the Indonesian language. The movement of the role of Indonesian in the country and the internationalization of the Indonesian language are jointly supported by the promotion of good and correct use of the Indonesian language. This promotion needs to be prioritized to maintain the existence of language as a symbol of the identity of the Indonesian nation in global life. Therefore, various efforts are made as well as hard work and cooperation between language institutions, all elements of the government and the role of the wider community are strategic steps to realize the existence and role of the Indonesian language in the international world.

Abstract In the Suharto era (1966-1998), there were eight discriminatory regulations toward regarding Chinese Indonesians that effectively banned the use of Chinese language and culture in public. For three decades, these regulations forced Chinese Indonesians to forget about Chinese language and culture and embedded anti-Chinese sentiment into non-Chinese Indonesians. After the end of the Suharto era, some regulations annulled the previous regulations, thus allowing Chinese culture including Chinese language to be practiced in public again. It created an unexpected Chinese boom. An increasing number of Indonesian students went to China to study the Chinese language. Today, many Indonesian students (Chinese Indonesians and non-Chinese Indonesians) not only study Chinese but have started to enroll in various faculties for degree programs in Chinese universities. This article uses statistical data and interviews in an attempt to explain Indonesian students’ reasons for studying in China and their degree preferences.

Background: Globalization has significantly impacted language use and identity formation worldwide. In Indonesia, the increasing prevalence of English alongside the national language, Bahasa Indonesia, has sparked a complex negotiation of linguistic identities among Indonesians. This research investigates how globalization influences English language use and its implications for Indonesian identity construction in the 21st century. Methods: This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews with 30 young adult Indonesians from diverse socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Thematic analysis was used to identify patterns and themes within the interview data, focusing on participants' perceptions of English, its role in their lives, and its impact on their sense of Indonesian identity. Findings: The findings reveal a nuanced understanding of English among young Indonesians. English is perceived as a tool for social mobility, professional advancement, and accessing global knowledge and culture. However, concerns were raised about the potential erosion of Indonesian language and cultural identity due to the dominance of English. Participants expressed a desire to maintain a strong sense of Indonesian identity while also embracing the benefits of English in a globalized world. Conclusion: This study demonstrates the complex interplay between language, identity, and globalization in the Indonesian context. The findings highlight the need for further research on language policies and educational practices that can promote multilingualism and intercultural competence, enabling Indonesians to navigate a globalized world while preserving their unique cultural heritage.

AbstractIn 1913, a new generation of Indonesians asserted their agency by publicly demanding equality in colonial society. Through four case studies—the prohibition of traditional forms of deference, the sudden popularity of Western dress, the adoption of new legal assimilation guidelines for Indonesians, and the discussion of employee rights at a railway company—we argue that this new assertiveness reflected a broad change in mentality that we consider a turning point in Indonesian history. By focusing on Indonesian agency, we challenge the Eurocentric periodization of the Indonesian past that emphasized WWI as a trigger of change.

The importance of acquiring Indonesian language as a second language underlies the research towards the Indonesian writing results of dysgraphic students at Yayasan Pantara Jakarta. It is very important for Indonesians to acquire Indonesian language because Indonesian language is used as the first language for some city dwellers and a second language for most Indonesians. The main purpose of the research is to identify the morphographemic changes that occur in dysgraphic Indonesian writing results as the second language acquisition at Yayasan Pantara Jakarta. The research used descriptive-qualitative method. The data was taken at Yayasan Pantara Jakarta Elementary School after being conducted direct field survey toward dysgraphic students. The writing analysed based on online KBBI (Indonesian Dictionary) and some theories related to the research. We used the primary theories from Bussmann (1996), Šev?íková (2018), and BOTH (2016). This research also supported by other supporting theories, such as Kidd et al. (2018), Bitchener & Ferris (2012), Sousa (2016), etc. From the analysis of the Indonesian writing results of dysgraphis students at Yayasan Pantara Jakarta, we found some types of morphographemic changes, they are prothesis, epenthesis, paragoge, syncope, apocope, metathesis, and substitution. Prothesis, epenthesis, and paragoge are parts of addition or insertion, while syncope and apocope are parts of deletion.

The use of Indonesian in outdoor media is increasingly worrying. This can be seen by the increasing number of Indonesian languages being transferred by foreign languages in public spaces. The Indonesians seem to be powerless in their own country and the substance of the Indonesians seems out of frame. By raising the case of the diversity of language use in outdoor media in the city of Palu, this study aims to describe patterns of diversity in language use, especially the use of foreign languages, regional languages, a mixture of Indonesian and foreign languages, as well as the full use of Indonesian in outdoor media in the city of Palu. The method used in this research is the listening method, the method used to obtain data by listening to the use of language that is in outdoor media in the city of Palu. The analysis shows that the pattern of diversity of language use in external media in the city of Palu is dominated by the use of foreign languages. Of the 280 data captured, 41% of outdoor media use foreign languages, mainly English. Furthermore, 34% of outdoor media use a mixture of Indonesian and foreign languages, 23% use Indonesian in full, and only 2% use local languages.keywords: language diversity, outdoor media

May 1998 saw one of the worst cases of racial violence in Indonesian history. During 13th to 15th May 1998, there were acts of expropriation, looting, arson and sexual assault targeting the Chinese community in Indonesia. Using two specimens of Indonesian post-New Order fiction, Sekuntum Nozomi 3 (SN3) by Marga Tjoa and Putri Cina (PC) by Sindhunata, this study investigates how cultural memories of the May 1998 Tragedy were shared with the post-event generation. The method employed is a qualitative narrative with a narratological approach. The results showed that literary works function as a medium for the spread of memory. Through SN3 and PC, the memory of violence against ethnic Chinese Indonesians between 12th and 15th May 1998 is transmitted, especially for the post-event generation who did not experience it firsthand. Despite the differing representation strategy, there was substantively one voice to be conveyed, namely that of “discrimination, violence and human rights violations” against Chinese Indonesians. Memories are institutionalised and distributed as part of the national memory in these works. Both works mediate the politics of cultural memory to memorialise the past “sins” of the Indonesian people. These literary works can be viewed as tools for minorities to articulate discrimination.

In this paper it is argued that economic nationalism in Indonesia, in its variousmanifestations, has been an important factor in determining particular economicpolicies since Indonesias independence up to the present. These economic policiesparticularly related to the ownership of productive assets owned by foreigners orby residents considered to be foreign, particularly Dutch business interests before1957 and the ethnic Chinese, including Sino-Indonesians, and to the economicfunctions performed by foreigners or by foreign residents. Focusing on one factoralone to understand Indonesia, specifcally Indonesias economic policies over time,is necessarily arbitrary and subjective. However, looking at Indonesias moderneconomic history since independence through the prism of economic nationalismdoes to an important degree explain or highlight the major considerations underlyingparticular economic policies of the Indonesian government because they re?ectedIndonesias national aspirations or national interests.

Horror movies in Indonesian cinemas have seen a recent surge of viewers despite being associated with exploiting sensualism under the blanket of horror. Meanwhile, the top ten viewed Indonesian horror movies in recent years managed to somewhat acquire the trust of Indonesians to come back to watch more horror movies in their favourite cinemas. This paper employs the qualitative content analysis method to better grasp what movie trailer elements are employed by the top 10 viewed Indonesian horror movies and see what are the similarities and differences in the elements of horror they present. Ultimately, as the market demands it, a natural selection for the kinds of horrors Indonesians watch is currently on going.

Banyaknya budaya yang ada di Indonesia sangat perlu untuk dilestarikan, terutama di Elementary School of Semarang Multinational School yang mayoritas siswanya merupakan warga negara asing, maka sekolah ini mengadakan kegiatan Indonesian Cultural Week guna melestarikan budaya Indonesia. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan pelestarian budaya Indonesia melalui kegiatan Indonesian Cultural Week yang dilaksanakan di Elementary School of Semarang Multinational School. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Elementary School of Semarang Multinational School. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah kepala sekolah, guru, dan siswa yang berjumlah 13 orang yang ditentukan dengan teknik purposive sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data menggunakan observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi dan catatan lapangan. Analisis data dilakukan melalui tahap reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pelestarian budaya lokal di Elementary School of Semarang Multinational School dilaksanakan dengan sangat baik melalui kegiatan Indonesian Cultural Week dengan dukungan dari seluruh pihak terkait yaitu kepala sekolah, guru, staff, siswa, dan juga orang tua yang ditunjukkan dengan adanya penambahan tingkat pengetahuan siswa mengenai budaya Indonesia.Simpulan dari penelitian ini adalah kegiatan Indonesian Cultural Week dapat melestarikan kebudayaan lokal di Elementary School of Semarang Multinaional School termasuk dalam kategori baik. Pelaksanaan kegiatan Indonesian Cultural Week meliputi upaya mempertahankan budaya lokal, pelestarian budaya didasarkan pada kebutuhan, serta terdapat strategi pelestarian budaya. Faktor pendukung pelaksanaan kegiatan Indonesian Cultural Week yaitu dimulai dari tahap persiapan yang meliputi penyusunan rancangan kegiatan, anggaran dana, tempat dan waktu pelaksanaan dan penyusunan kepanitiaan, sampai dengan tahap pelaksanaan kegiatan dan evaluasi pasca kegiatan
 Many cultures in Indonesia are very necessary to be preserved, especially in Elementary School of Semarang Multinational School, where the majority of students are foreign nationals, so this school holds Indonesian Cultural Week activities to preserve Indonesian culture. This research aims to describe the preservation of Indonesian culture through Indonesian Cultural Week activities held at Elemenary School of Semarang Multinational School. This research uses qualitative approach. The research was conducted at Elementary School of Semarang Multinational School. The samples in this study were principals, teachers, and students of 13 people determined by purposive sampling techniques. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, documentation and field notes. Data analysis is done through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the preservation of local culture at Elementary School of Semarang Multinational School was carried out very well through Indonesian Cultural Week activities with support from all relevant parties, namely principals, teachers, staff, students, and also parents, which was shown by the addition of students' level of knowledge about Indonesian culture.The conclusion of this research is that Indonesian Cultural Week activities can preserve local culture at Elementary School of Semarang Multinaional School in the good category. The implementation of Indonesian Cultural Week activities includes efforts to maintain local culture, cultural preservation based on needs, and there are strategies for cultural preservation. Supporting factors for the implementation of Indonesian Cultural Week activities are starting from the preparation stage which includes the preparation of the draft activities, budget funds, place and time of implementation and preparation of committee, up to the stage of implementation of activities and post-activity evaluation

The 2019 Indonesian presidential elections indicate that ideology played an important role in voting behaviour, as aggregate subnational results seem to mirror the mid-1950s, when Indonesian politics was organised around ideological and partisan groups known as aliran. However, the extent to which these macro-level patterns are rooted in real ideological divisions among Indonesian voters is an open question. This article analyses an original survey specifically designed to measure aliran identities, ideological orientations and political preferences of ordinary Indonesians. Findings indicate that aliran identities are still present and associated with party choice but only loosely connected with political ideology. Most notably, however, political Islam is associated with important political attitudes and behaviours. Islamist Indonesians are less likely to support liberal understandings of democracy, more likely to see economic issues as policy priorities and more likely to support economic redistribution and regional autonomy. This suggests that ideology should receive greater attention in the study of Indonesian politics.

The discourses related to Israel, Jews, and conflicts related to them in Indonesian media has an influence on how Indonesians view them, be it on the aspect of “Israel” as a nation, an ethnicity, or a religion. Nas Daily, a Facebook vlog account runs by an Israeli-Arab vlogger, uploaded an Indonesian version of one of his videos which talks about Jerusalem, a city part of Israel, in his Indonesian vlog Nas Daily Bahasa Indonesia.. Using Stuart Hall's theory of representation and theory of reception, this study aims to examine how Indonesian audiences respond to the representation of the city of Jerusalem in the video “Sindrom Yerusalem” produced by a Facebook vlog channel “Nas Daily Indonesia”. The analysis is done through a qualitative approach which is using the concepts in Hall’s theories in order to do in-depth analysis on the readings of the audiences based on the comments found in the comment section of the video post. The findings on the analysis show how dominant reading on the video generally agree on the representation of Jerusalem as a city of spirituality and religiosity, which is presented positively in the video. On the other hand, most comments with oppositional reading relate their opinion based on the Israel-Palestine conflict, a context which is not mentioned in the video. Despite the disagreement on the positive representation, the oppositional readings still show the leaning on viewing Jerusalem and its related conflict through religious aspect, which is not so different from the aspect agreed upon by comments with dominant reading.

This is a qualitative study investigating the strength of the proposition of Indonesian English (Indolish) as a potentially emerging English variety from the outer/expanding circle from an emic perspective. This proposed variety does not yet exist even as a de facto English variety spoken in Indonesia or elsewhere. Nonetheless, the growing spread of English used by Indonesians has frequently prompted the idea of promoting the establishment of Indolish as a new English variety in the World Englishes areas for Indonesians. To clarify this early signal, an exploratory study was conducted to investigate the perspective of Indonesian postgraduate students who pursued their higher degrees in some Australian universities and whose overseas learning and language contact experience should bring them into a direct contact with a wide range of English varieties and thereby allowing them to better reflect on the significance of creating a special type of English for Indonesians. Seven participants responded to the three open-questioned survey questionnaire sent to two mailing list groups of Indonesian Postgraduate students. Two participants prefer to have Indolish while five others disagree with the idea. Majority of the participants show a strong nationalistic identity indicating a stagnant foundation process in Schneider’s Dynamic Model in Indonesian context. Nevertheless, the participants demonstrate a strong dependence on English NS norms which confirm Kachru’s proposition and indicate their rejection of Norton’s notion of ownership of English language. In conclusion, these participants view that Indonesian English does not seem ready to launch yet.

Minority groups tend to be prejudiced by other groups, including Chinese Indonesian. Chinese Indonesians have massive power in Indonesia's economy and hence are considered a threat to occupation and housing opportunities. This study aims to understand realistic threats that would predict prejudice toward Chinese Indonesian. A quantitative method with a cross-sectional survey was conducted for data collection. Sample criteria include 18 years above and belonging to several ethnicities, Javanese, Sundanese, Maduranese, Bugis, Minangkabau, Malayan, and Batavian. Two hundred forty-one respondents participated in this study. This study found realistic threat predicted prejudice toward Chinese Indonesian. Realistic threat explains 18% prejudice toward Chinese Indonesian. Practical and theoretical implications were discussed further.

The writing method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative method. Type of data, The type of data used in this research is secondary data collected from various literatures using the theoretical basis, namely national identity in strengthening the Indonesian language. Indonesian has been designated as a language of unity and a symbol of national identity in the law and national linguistic conferences. Language is one of the national identities. Indonesian is the national identity of the Indonesian people. Language is used as a means of communication between communities. Not only as a means of communication language is also made as a national identity. Although there are many languages in Indonesia, Indonesian is able to unite 1128 ethnic groups with 746 regional languages united by one language, namely Indonesian. It is hoped that the Indonesian language can foster a sense of nationalism towards the nation and state. As the phenomenon at this time a lot of use of English shows that Indonesians forget their original identity. With the growing sense of nationalism in Indonesian society with the use of Indonesian, the Indonesian language will be stronger as the national identity of the Indonesian people. National identity is a form of identity of a country to distinguish a country from other countries. Language is one of the national identities. Indonesian is the national identity of the Indonesian people. Language is used as a means of communication between communities. Not only as a means of communication language is also made as a national identity. Although different ethnicities, cultures, religions but Indonesia is united with one language, namely Indonesian. It is hoped that the Indonesian language can foster a sense of nationalism towards the nation and state. Some Indonesians in refugee camps in Syria state they want to return to Indonesia. The plan to repatriate the Indonesian ex-ISIS then raises the pros and cons. Some consider that Indonesian citizen who have joined ISIS deserve to be given the opportunity to improve themselves and have a right to be returned to Indonesia if they really want to repent. Some are worried that the repatriation of Indonesian citizen who join ISIS would create new problems in Indonesia. The problem is that among them there are dozens of children, and they are not combatants who took up arms against Iraq and Syria. They just follow where their parents go. Using the normative juridical study method, this paper explains the potential impact that can arise on national security if the Indonesian government adopts a policy of repatriating Indonesian children who used to join ISIS. The results in this study then provide a prescription that should be carried out by the Indonesian government towards Indonesian children who used to join ISIS

Abstract The comfort temperature and sleep quality of Indonesian residing in Japan during summer might be different from Japanese. As an extended previous research, this study aimed to compare the thermal comfort and sleep quality between Japanese and Indonesian students. Male Indonesian and Japanese students aged 20-35 years participated in this study. The participants completed a survey regarding thermal sensation before sleep. During sleep, actigraphy was used to monitor sleep. Additionally, the temperature and relative humidity of the participants’ bedrooms were recorded. The findings of this study indicated that Indonesian students’ bedroom temperature and relative humidity were not significantly different from those of Japanese students during the summer. Most of Indonesian students preferred neutral, like the Japanese students. According to a thermal comfort survey, Indonesians had the same sensation as Japanese (slightly comfortable). However, the Griffiths method revealed that the mean comfort temperature of Indonesian was higher than those of Japanese students. We also discovered that Indonesian students had shorter duration on bed and sleep minute than Japanese students. Furthermore, the sleep rate of Indonesian students was comparable to that of Japanese students. In conclusion, Indonesian students as tropical native became capable of adjusting to the hot and humid conditions in temperate climate, Japan.

The purpose of the article is (1) to gather empirical facts about the use of words and terms in Indonesian literatures, (2) understand implicature (aditional message) behind the the dynamic use of words and terms in Indonesian literatures. The fact about awareness of the usage of Indonesian language in literatures is expected to be supporting data in the development of Indonesian language history. The source of the data is Indonesian literatures including novels. The data are collected by reading technique, marking out, and taking notes. The data are analyzed using comparison technique, a technique that use words or terms in certain time and compared to those from another time. The result of this analysis shows that in 1980’s, many Indonesia literatures used vernacular words and terms. This period of time can be used as an alternatif to mark the development of Indonesian language, especially the development of the vocabulary. Besides, the use of words and terms in the speech of Indonesian novel characters are an implication that Indonesian society, particularly the writers are worried that traditional culture will be shifted by national culture. Horror is one of the most popular film genres, particularly among Indonesians. One of the reasons the Indonesian people love watching a horror movie is because of the sensation of a jump scare. Thus, the number of horror film watchers in Indonesia continues to grow. This condition may aid Indonesian film production, as practically everyone enjoys horror. However, it is also problematic because Indonesian film has struggled to enhance its quality. Thus, the author's objective in this study is to analyse the dilemma confronting Indonesian cinema: the trade-off between profit and quality. To assist the author in doing this analysis, Film Production Management from Bastian Cleve is applied. The findings of this study reveal that Indonesian film production faces particular challenges that must be overcome. Indonesian cinema should prioritize quality above immediate profit as improving the quality of a film can result in a higher profit. Thus, the courage to develop and compete is critical to overcome those challenges.

AbstractThis article examines a formative episode in the history of both the United Nations Security Council and Indonesian decolonisation. In August of 1947, Council members authorised an ad hoc delegation from the Republic of Indonesia to participate in its discussions concerning the ongoing Dutch–Indonesian conflict. Focusing on the series of developments that led to the Indonesians taking their seats at the table, this article reveals how Security Council procedures and practices could be used to facilitate the decolonisation process. The Council's involvement in the Dutch–Indonesian conflict—and, in particular, the decision to allow the Indonesians to present their case in this international arena—demonstrates that Europeans’ claims of “domestic jurisdiction” over their colonial territories remained subject to negotiation, and that non-European actors could successfully contest these claims in Council chambers.

<p>The purpose of this study is to explain about women’s positions and roles that are represented in films as agents who frame identity and ethnical stereotype of “the East”. By using intersectional feminist perspective, the study analyse texts from three Indonesian films which using film sets in the regions of Eastern Indonesia as follows: <em>Aisyah: Let Us Be a Family </em>(2016), <em>Salawaku </em>(2016), and <em>Marlina, the Murderer in Four Acts</em> (2017). Findings show that films about Eastern Indonesia still embed with the perspectives of orientalism and colonialism. Women from non-Eastern Indonesia are commonly represented to having superior positions and important roles in educating and spreading the feeling of nationalism. On the other hand, Eastern Indonesian women are mostly represented inferior and alienated from their communities and nature. </p><p> </p>

This study aims to identify and describe: 1) the development of Arab-Indonesian and Indonesian-Arab literacy in Indonesia, 2) the Arab-Indonesian and Indonesian-Arab literacy system in Indonesia. This study is a historical study, with a qualitative approach. The data collection in this study uses the technique of documentation. The data analysis used in this study used qualitative descriptive analysis, with the focus of the study being the development of Arab-Indonesian and Indonesian-Arab studies in Indonesia. The results of this study indicated that the development of lexicography Arabic-Indonesian and Indonesian-Arabic in Indonesia can be summed up as follows: First, a) The initial phase of lexicography Arabic-Indonesian begins with the rise of Arab-Malay dictionary Idris Al-Marbawi in 1927. The dictionary is the beginning of the development of the Indonesian-Indonesian dictionary in Indonesia. Once the presence of Arab-Malay dictionary Idris Al-Marbawi then comes the Arabic-Indonesian dictionary compiled by Mahmud Yunus in 1972. The initial phase-Indonesian Arabic lexicography is followed by a phase of development of lexicography Arabic-Indonesian dictionary Al-Munawwir in 1984, then Dictionary Contemporary Arabic-Indonesian 1996, Al-Bisri Arabic-Indonesian Dictionary 1999, Al-Mutahar Arabic-Indonesian Dictionary, Al-Azhar Arabic-Indonesian Dictionary 2009, Al-Kamal Arabic-Indonesian Dictionary 2010. (b) Early phases of Indonesian-Arab practice in The introduction of the Indonesian-Arabic Dictionary was compiled by Asad M. Kalali in 1981. It is the forerunner of the Indonesian-Arabic dictionary in Indonesia. The early phases of the Arabic-Indonesian dictionary continue with the developmental phase of the Indonesian-Arabic dictionary of the Indonesian-Arabic Al-Bisri dictionary in 1999, the Indonesian-Arabic dictionary Al-Munawwir in 2007, the Indonesian-Arabic dictionary of Al-Mufied in 2010, the Indonesian- Arabic KABA 2013. Second, the Arabic-Indonesian and Indonesian-Arabic system of learning is still dominated by a special alphabetical system, where users (users) of these dictionaries need to know the basic grammar of a word, of course this system is very difficult to use for them who is not yet familiar with sharf and narcissism. But in the development phase there is also an Arabic-Indonesian dictionary using the articulation system, where the user (user) does not have to change or find the word pattern they want to look for, but instead refers to the first letter of a word. Indonesian is one of the many dialects of Malay. Therefore, High Malay (Melaka/Riau) is used as the basic language of Indonesia. Even though more than 90% of Indonesians are able to understand and speak the language, most Indonesians do not regard their mother tongue as Indonesian. The most common "Indonesian" idiom is associated with situations where a standard variety of Indonesian is spoken official. The local dialect is the language most commonly used in daily interactions among native speakers. People in the Medan area, like other cities, usually speak a dialect of Indonesian which is called the dialect, and the phonological system has recently undergone some changes. This study aims to analyze and display the system of lexical changes in Indonesian spoken by the people of Medan.This paper uses descriptive-quantitative methodology and generative phonological theory in its preparation. The data for this study came from written sources such as journals and articles about the history of changes in phoneme systems, as well as oral sources such as those written by native speakers of the Medan language. The results of this study indicate that generationally, the people of Medan generally remove or change certain phonemes in the words they speak, such as the a and u phonemes in the word "chaotic" which disappear and become o. in the word "kaco." The word "ask" finally develops into the word "ask" by adding the last word as a phoneme. This indicates that many words in Indonesian have different pronunciations when spoken by the people of Medan, and this will be analyzed and presented in more detail in the following sections.

The research examines how linguistic and cultural strategies, including Arabic loanwords, bilingual code-switching, religious hashtags, and visual symbols such as traditional attire, calligraphy, and cultural practices, are used to articulate identity in digital spaces. Findings highlight the strategic use of Arabic phrases such as Alhamdulillah (praise be to God) and InshaAllah (God willing) alongside Indonesian language, reflecting linguistic hybridity and cultural pride. Code-switching between Arabic and Indonesian in captions and comments serves as a dynamic tool for expressing dual cultural affiliations. Additionally, hashtags such as #ArabIndonesian and #TradisiArab amplify representation and foster community solidarity. Learning Korean as a foreign language requires accurate pronunciation. Korean language has 3 characteristics of consonants, namely basic consonants, fortic consonants, and aspirate consonants. This study aims to describe the phonological interference of consonants that occurs from Indonesian to Korean. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method to find out what phonological transfers are found when Indonesian speakers pronounce words with three types of consonants in Korean. The subjects of this study were 5 Indonesian speakers who studied Korean. The five subjects were given a short story containing words with various consonants to read, and their voices were recorded. Analysis of the data showed that there were differences in the pronunciation of some Korean and Indonesian consonants in the phonological transfer when Korean was spoken by Indonesian speakers. There are 3 weak affirmative consonants in Korean /ㅈ j /, strong affirmative /ㅉc'/ and aspirational affirmative /ㅊ t h /, while in Indonesian there are 2 affirmative consonants, namely voiceless consonants /c/ and affirmative consonants /j/. This causes interference in the pronunciation of Korean by Indonesians. This research leads to the conclusion that factors causing mispronunciation include the application of Indonesian pronunciation rules when pronouncing Korean, because the sound of Korean phonemes are equated with similar Indonesian phonemes, and the lack of student training.

This study is concerned with the effect of globalization on language usage, especially in the context of the Indonesian workplace. Within the context of international workplaces where employees often use English to communicate with their foreign colleagues, the researchers found that Indonesian addressing terms such as Pak or Bu are often mixed in with English. This study considers this phenomenon typical in high language contact situations; and sees the mixing of some Indonesian in the English spoken in Indonesia as a distinct characteristic of the localized English used in the country. Specific patterns and motivations for such mixing of the Indonesian addressing terms in the local English may uncover certain identity expressions by Indonesians as a reaction to globalization. To explore these issues, interviews were conducted with employees of international workplaces in Indonesia to determine: (i) different motivations for mixing Indonesian addressing terms in the local English, and (ii) what the different motivations may reveal about the identities of different Indonesian speakers. Results from the interview reveal that the use of Indonesian addressing terms and the related speakers’ identities are largely dependent on social class.

Today, the domination of Chinese Indonesian entrepreneurs in Indonesia economy is not questionable. This research aims to understand the entrepreneurial culture of Chinese Indonesian entrepreneurs that are believed to be one of their success factors. This research used in-depth interview and successfully conducted interviews with 12 successful Chinese Indonesian entrepreneurs who understand about Chinese cultural values. The result revealed that some unique characteristics of their entrepreneurial culture differentiate themselves from other entrepreneurs such as believe in regeneration since childhood, it however brings positive impact to their children who already get used to the work environment before they finally become matured and independent. Chinese Indonesian entrepreneurs have a strong principle in cash management and love to have long term planning completed with the contingency plan. They cursed debt, it is perceived as a disgrace and it becomes the last option in looking for financial resources. The empathy between Chinese Indonesians is strong and especially because they believe that Chinese Indonesian has a competitive trait at trading, their business style is flexible and they still hold high value in respect for parents and teachers.

The thesis focuses on how Chinese Indonesians are constructed in Ngenest and why they are constructed that way. Chinese Indonesians become a scapegoat and considered bad ethnic group since they are the minority. By using the Ethnic Construction and Stereotype theory it helps me to reveal the constructions of Chinese Indonesians in Ngenest, and also why they are constructed that way. I would analyze the Chinese Indonesian major and minor characters in Ngenest. This can be revealed from the way they interact with the society in Ngenest. In conclusion, Chinese Indonesians are not accepted as one’s own in their land because of their construction as perpetual foreigners, being loyal to Chinese traditions which makes them different from the rest of the Indonesian society, and being rich by exploiting non-Chinese Indonesians. Since the Chinese Indonesians are the minority, they become a scapegoat and target of non-Chinese Indonesians in the society. The purpose of this study is to find out the forms and functions of interrogative sentences in Arabic and Indonesian, discuss the similarities and differences between the two languages, and explain the methods used in both languages. This study also aims to contribute to overcoming language difficulties and errors that are often experienced by Indonesian students when learning Arabic, especially in the form of interrogative sentences. The method used in this study is a descriptive method of comparison between the two languages, which consists of three stages: (1) description of the language of inquiry in both languages, (2) discovery of similarities and differences between the two languages, and (3) prediction of possible difficulties experienced by Indonesians in learning Arabic. Some of the results of this study are: (1) there are several similarities in the use of interrogative tools in Arabic and Indonesian, whether original or not, singular or plural, and both languages ​​have an important role in the form of interrogative sentences; (2) the word order in the use of question tools and interrogative sentences between Arabic and Indonesian is almost the same, and the two have a close relationship; and (3) the time in interrogative sentences in both languages, which can be used to ask about the past, present, or future. However, there are some differences in the form of interrogative sentences between Arabic and Indonesian, such as: (1) in Arabic, interrogative sentences are used to ask for confirmation and descriptions, whereas in Indonesian, interrogative sentences are only used to ask for descriptions; (2) in Arabic, interrogative sentences are carried out using a questioning tool and emphasis on voice, whereas in Indonesian, interrogative sentences can be carried out in three ways, namely only voice emphasis, using question tools and voice stress, and using question tools, voice stress. , and affixes. These differences can be difficult for Indonesians learning Arabic.

ABSTRACT The present study investigates the similarities and differences between Australian English and Indonesian speakers on paying compliments. A total of 50 university-student informants participated in the study: 25 Indonesian native speakers and 25 Australian English native speakers. The data were collected through a written Discourse Completion Task (DCT) which consists of eight situational settings. The results showed some similarities and differences between Australian English and Indonesian speakers on paying compliment. The similarities included the fact that ability was the most frequently preferred topic for both Indonesians and Australians, both Indonesians and Australians were more likely to give explicit verbal compliment, and compliments occurred mostly from males to females. The differences were: firstly, Australians used implicit compliment as their second preference, while Indonesians used ‘no-response’ type. Secondly, Australian females gave more explicit verbal compliment than the males did, whereas Indonesian females and males gave almost equal amount of explicit verbal compliment. Thirdly, the second most frequent positive semantic carriers were adverbs in Indonesian, but verbs in Australian English. ABSTRAK Penelitian ini menyelidiki persamaan dan perbedaan antara Australia dan Indonesia dalam memberikan pujian. Sebanyak lima puluh mahasiswa yang terdiri dari 25 mahasiswa Australia dan 25 mahasiswa Indonesia terlibat dalam penelitian ini sebagai informan. Data dikumpulkan melalui instrument tertulis (DCT) yang terdiri dari delapan seting. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan beberapa persamaan dan perbedaan antara Australia dan Indonesia dalam memberikan pujian. Persamaannya meliputi kemampuan (ability) menjadi topik yang paling disukai oleh keduanya, baik Indonesia dan Australia lebih senang memberikan pujian lisan secara eksplisit, dan pujian terjadi sebagian besar dari laki-laki ke perempuan. Adapun perbedaannya antara lain: pertama, Australia menggunakan pujian implicit sebagai preferensi kedua sementara Indonesia menggunakan tipe ‘no response’. Kedua, wanita Australia memberi pujian lisan secara eksplisit lebih daripada laki-laki lakukan, sedangkan wanita dan pria Indonesia memberi jumlah yang hampir sama dari pujian lisan eksplisit. The article analyzes the features of development and the main vectors of transformation of the Chinese part of the modern Indonesian Ummah. It is shown that historically a unique community of ethnic Chinese and Indonesians of Chinese origin, who belong to the Muslim Ummah, emerged in Indonesia. The author analyzes the ideological and or-ganizational mutations and changes in the Muslim Chinese com¬munity, represented by the "Indonesian Chinese Islamic Brotherhood" ("Per-saudaraan Islam Tionghoa Indonesia"), the largest organization in Indo-nesia that unites Muslim Chinese and their descendants. Particular at-tention is paid to the current ideological preferences of Chinese Muslims in Indonesia. Their place in the Ummah and their subordinate, auxiliary role in the political system which distinguishes them from Indonesian Muslim organizations are also shown in the article. The article shows how and why activities of Chinese Muslims in Indonesia are limited mainly to preaching and spreading Islam among their compatriots, which became the result of a long period of discrimination, as well as the tendency of a part of Indonesian society to accept anti-Chinese phobias, extending them to Muslims, who formally, like the majority Indonesians, belongs to the Muslim Ummah.

Background. Pancasila is the basic ideology of the Indonesian nation. Pancasila consists of two Sanskrit words: panca which means five and sila which means principle. Purpose. The purpose of this research is that Pancasila itself is a settlement and guidelines for the life of the nation and the state of selirih Indonesian citizens. Method. Data was obtained by giving teacher performance scales, teacher digital literacy, and online learning implementation scales. Results. Here are the five precepts that are in the body of Pancasila, namely: divinity that is the one, fair and civilized humanity, Indonesian unity, democracy led by wisdom and wisdom in representative deliberation, social justice for all Indonesian people. The application of Pancasila must be familiarized from an early age, either through the family or community environment in order to create a safe and peaceful and prosperous environment. In the third precept, it is clear about unity in Indonesia, but there are still many Indonesians who ignore this precept. Conclusion. Of course this case is very detrimental to those who become victims of racism, this action greatly affects a person's mentality for that we as Indonesians must emphasize the values of Pancasila to prevent such cases.

Abstract This study explicates discourse on Indonesian social media pertaining to Chinese Indonesians by analyzing comments posted on Facebook. Using Cultural Discourse Analysis (CuDA), we show how Chinese are depicted as the “other” in Indonesian discourse. We also unpack persuasive efforts to convince readers of Chinese Indonesians’ other-ness through such rhetorical terms as cina (racial slur against Chinese Indonesians) and pribumi (native, indigenous, non-Chinese). The functional accomplishment of such discourse works to (1) exert the power to determine indigeneity and inclusivity; and (2) solidify Chinese Indonesians’ position as non-native, and a scapegoat for problems in Indonesia. Findings from this study further our understanding of ways to analyze and unpack discursive construction in online communication. They also demonstrate how social media may amplify and/or construct social and political discourses.

This study aims to elaborate on the findings of the utterances of the bilabial letters B and Syafatain huruf Ba spoken by Indonesians as non-Arabic speakers in the context of differences in pronunciation between Arabic and Indonesian letters. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach using participant speakers. Three Indonesian participants recited Surah Al-Fatihah in the mosque environment. Data collection techniques are listening techniques using audio, observation, and interviews. Data analysis used is data reduction with raw data in the form of audio recordings and using a Praat Analysis Computer. This study obtained data on the characteristics and factors that influence the speech articulation of letters B and Ba spoken by Indonesians as non-Arabic speakers. Furthermore, this research has practical implications for the treasures of Arabic-Indonesian phonetic knowledge, also empirically as material for field-based learning studies.
