Abstract (sommario):
The alternative practice option of association management offers tremendous potential for professional growth and personal satisfaction. Diversity of activity and the opportunity to have a direct impact upon the future of the profession are two major dimensions associated with this growing career option. In total, more than 140 pharmacists have found rewarding career positions in the offices of pharmacy's state and national associations. These pharmacists, serving as chief executive officers and professional staff members, have chosen to serve the profession rather than pursue its actual practice. Their work is important and challenging and serves to have a significant effect on both the profession as a whole and individual pharmacists. A diversity of opportunity is available to the pharmacist aspiring a career in association work. As a chief executive, the pharmacist uses a broad range of administrative skills to help the association achieve its overall mission. Working with the association's elected leadership, the association executive helps establish goals and objectives and pursues their attainment by implementing effective strategies. As professional association staff members, many pharmacists use skills in areas related to law, clinical pharmacy, journalism, education, and public relations to help their associations serve the profession of pharmacy and their individual memberships. The revolutionary changes occurring in health care today are placing an increasing level of demand upon professional associations. Never before have these associations been confronted with more challenges and opportunities. As a result, the opportunities for pharmacist employment in this field are expected to grow. Professionally motivated pharmacists have and will continue to find this alternative practice option to be both professionally and personally rewarding.

Abstract (sommario):
Stuttering priapism entails repeated, distinct episodes of persistent penile erection despite interval periods of detumescence. While individual episodes are acutely treated, overall management of the patient with recurrent priapism focuses on prevention of future incidents. According to American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines, systemic therapy may be used for prevention of priapism — including hormonal agents, baclofen, digoxin, and terbutaline. Other methods of management include selfinjection of sympathomimetic agents and surgical intervention with placement of a penile prosthesis.1 This case report describes long-term use of hormonal therapy in the management of stuttering priapism in a young male.

Abstract (sommario):
The Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice™, created by the National Association of School Nurses (NASN), explains school nursing practice, providing guidance, organization, prioritization, and meaning. This is the second article in a series for The Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice. This article focuses on case management, one of the practice components in the principle of care coordination. Case management focuses on school nurse support of individual at-risk students and collaborative actions to reduce barriers to their academic success. This article will clarify how the terms care coordination and case management are used in context of the Framework and provide an example to help the reader apply the concept to practice. Washington’s School Nurse Case Management Program will serve as a model. The program outlines evidence for effective practice and shares practical examples of how school nurses can implement case management into their daily work. Any school nurse, no matter how large or small their workload, can provide case management.

Abstract (sommario):
Modern architecture of the world economy is determined not only by the indicators of development of individual national economies and not only by their individual efforts, but also by coordinated efforts of several countries, such as trade agreements. One of such agreements that should lead to freer market relations, fairer trade and sustainable economic growth in the region, better resolution of international disputes, environmental protection, intellectual property protection, etc., is the United States – Mexico – Canada Agreement (USMCA). The aim of this paper is an attempt to analyze the level of global competitiveness of intergovernmental associations (agreements) as influential participants in the international market. To do this, the concepts of “competitive power of the country” and “competitive power of international integration groups” are compared with the concept of firm competitiveness. The competitiveness of the country association was analyzed through the example of the USMCA based on The Global Competitiveness Report 2019 and The Global Competitiveness Index 4.0. used in it. The paper also examines the global challenges and obstacles affecting the level of competitiveness and competitive advantage that each country receives when participating in an international integration agreement. This analysis helps explain real competitive processes in the global economy.

Abstract (sommario):
School counselors are tasked with many activities, including demonstrating the effectiveness of interventions they use with students. The American School Counselor Association recommends that school counselors include assessment, appraisal, and evaluation of delivery and program management in their school counseling program. Single-case research design is a data collection and analysis strategy that can assist school counselors with this task. We developed the Impact of Intervention tool to provide school counselors a tool to streamline the data collection process.

Abstract (sommario):
55 Background: The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommends active surveillance (AS) as the primary management option for patients with very low-risk prostate cancer (VLRPC) and an expected survival of <20 years. Factors associated with selection of AS are therefore of clinical importance. We hypothesized that care at a multidisciplinary clinic (MC), where multiple physicians simultaneously review each case, will be associated with increased rates of AS in men with VLRPC, including those with limited life expectancy. Methods: Of 630 patients with low-risk prostate cancer managed at one of three tertiary care centers in Boston, MA in 2009, 274 (43.5%) had VLRPC. Patients were either seen by one or more individual providers in sequential visits (N=178) or at an MC (N=96), in which concurrent consultation with two or more of the following specialties was obtained: urology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology. Results: Patients seen at an MC were more likely to select AS than those seen by individual providers (64% vs 30%, p<.001), an association which remained significant on multivariable logistic regression (OR=4.16, p<.001), see Table. When the analysis was limited to patients with an expected survival of <20 years based on the 2007 Social Security Life Table, this association remained highly significant (OR=5.19, p<.001). Conclusions: Multidisciplinary care is strongly associated with selection of AS, adherence to NCCN guidelines, and minimization of over-treatment in patients with VLRPC. [Table: see text]

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractProcrastination is consistently viewed as problematic to academic success and students’ general well-being. There are prevailing questions regarding the underlying and maintaining mechanisms of procrastination which are yet to be learnt. The aim of the present study was to combine different ways to explain procrastination and explore how students’ time and effort management skills, psychological flexibility and academic self-efficacy are connected to procrastination as they have been commonly addressed separately in previous studies. The data were collected from 135 students who participated in a voluntary time management and well-being course in autumn 2019. The results showed that students’ ability to organize their time and effort has the strongest association with procrastination out of the variables included in the study. Psychological flexibility also has a strong individual role in explaining procrastination along with time and effort management skills. Surprisingly, academic self-efficacy did not have a direct association with procrastination. Interestingly, our findings further suggest that time and effort management and psychological flexibility are closely related and appear to go hand in hand and, thus, both need to be considered when the aim is to reduce procrastination. The implications of the findings are further discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: Hypothyroidism is a well-documented consequence of lithium treatment. Less well known is a possible association between lithium therapy and hyperthyroidism. This may have clinical implications as rapid changes in thyroid hormones may worsen a person’s affective state, while symptoms of hyperthyroidism can mimic those of mania. We therefore systematically reviewed the published literature for evidence of lithium-induced hyperthyroidism. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase and CINAHL for articles where individuals developed biochemically confirmed hyperthyroidism (with or without clinical symptoms), while on lithium therapy for an affective illness. We included case reports, case series, cross-sectional, case control and cohort studies. Results: We included 52 studies, 39 of which were individual case reports and 3 were case series. There were 10 cross-sectional or case control or cohort studies. All the research designs suggested an association between the prescription of lithium and hyperthyroidism. However, these findings were limited by the quality of the included studies, small number of participants and the general lack of either a clear temporal relationship or dose response. Conclusion: Hyperthyroidism is an uncommon side-effect of lithium compared to hypothyroidism but may have clinical implications. However, large prospective studies are required to clarify this association and to further inform the management of patients treated with lithium where hyperthyroidism occurs.

Abstract (sommario):
There is no guarantee that people will follow their professional code of ethics. Large number of violation occurred in almost every organization. In this study we argued that commitment toward code of ethics, which is related to ethical feelings, is imperative to predict whether a person will obey their professional code. This study predicted that commitment to the code of ethics is determined by individual morality (i.e. moral judgment and moral maturity), and religious feeling. The survey was conducted through online questionnaire to Indonesian employees from various sectors and undergraduate students. The analysis revealed that moral judgment cannot predict commitment toward code of ethics. The result showed that religious feeling and moral maturity have positive association with commitment to code of ethics. In addition, these two concepts also produced favorable effect on moral judgment. Discussion, implication, and limitation are provided in the final part of article.

Alexander, Virna Greer. "A capacity building assessment of TB Care Association : a case study". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/50551.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2006.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Non-profit organisations play an increasingly important role in our society as they often represent community interests. The ability of the non-profit sector to perform effectively has become more critical. In order to maintain their value and effectiveness they require continuous renewal. The increased demand placed on this sector as it partners with government to deliver basic services to the community has amplified the need for this renewal process. The non-profit sector is constantly required to develop new ways of building its capacity in an attempt to meet its challenges. Despite the emphasis placed on the importance of capacity building, the term itse~ is frequently too expansive to be meaningful to decision makers. This paper attempts to develop a working definition of capacity building and assess the capacity building levels of TB Care Association. TB Care Association, founded in 1929, provides a service to tuberculosis patients and their families. Over the last decade, the organisation has moved from being a welfare organisation to a developmental health promotion organisation. The survey conducted on TB Care Association indicates that the scores obtained by the organisation coincide with the organisation's stage of development according to Korten (Mukasa, 2003). The results further revealed that fund raising, over dependence on government funding, lack of succession planning and human resources strategies are potential issues that could impede organisational growth and development.

Albanese, Francesca Claire. "Decision-making in the housing association sector : the case of asset management". Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2007. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/3206/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There has been a rapid expansion in the role and s1ze of the housing association sector in England since 1979, driven by changes in policy agendas. In the past ten years the problem of 'low demand' housing has also been an issue for housing providers in certain areas of the North and Midlands. Attention has been drawn to the asset management strategies of housing associations, however relatively little is known about the process by which stock investment decisions are made. This thesis investigates the decision-making behaviour of three housing associations, with a focus upon power and knowledge in the decision making process. Using the context of asset management and low demand housing it examines how and why decisions are made within the three case studies. Drawing on two decision-making models, the political-bureaucratic (Pettigrew 1973) and behaviourist (Cyert and March 1992) models, the study develops an analytical framework derived from Foucault's relational concept of power and Clegg's 'circuits of power'. By adopting a qualitative approach the research explores current decision-making practices through the use of semi-structured interviews, focus groups and documentary analysis. The empirical evidence suggests that the concept of power is integral to understanding how decisions are framed and then made. However, power is a complex concept and housing associations are devising their asset management strategies in a shifting external environment. Different agencies are significant, depending on the commercial strength, geographical base, scale and degree of maturity of the association in question. The analytical framework enables power to be traced within each case study through examining the organisational tactics and 'game playing' in place. But it also identifies constraints with the 'relational' concept of power, suggesting that where power resides is also important. Power is also closely linked to knowledge, and each case study used information selectively as an expression of power relations. In response to the greater commercialisation of the sector housing associations' approach to asset management is changing. Some are grasping at these opportunities, whereas others are finding such pressures in tension with their original mission. Some larger associations are becoming 'learning organisations' and it is anticipated that the more successful agencies in this group will become increasingly autonomous from the Housing Corporation and other regulatory bodies in their approach to asset management due to these changes.

Storman, Anders, e Elin Storman. "Inter-organizational knowledge management : A case study in a Swedish economic association". Thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Företagsekonomi, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-30405.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this case study is to understand how inter-organizational knowledge management is conducted in an economic association by analysing how different actor representatives perceive the inter-organizational collaboration. Design/methodology/approach The method of this study is qualitative, with a single case study of an economic association in Dalarna, Sweden. The interviews were of semi-structured character. A total of nine respondents were interviewed; four respondents from private member organizations, three respondents from public member organizations and two respondents employed by the economic association. Findings and conclusion Six themes were found that together answers the purpose of this study. These themes are personalization, codification, collaboration, conditions, capabilities and challenges. The personalization strategy from the knowledge management framework by Hansen et al (1999) is suggested to be the main strategy in the case of the economic association, while the codification strategy is the supporting strategy working in relation to each other. In order to use those strategies in this interorganizational context, four other themes are added in a model created by the authors of this study. The four additional themes need to be taken in consideration and as the theme capabilities points out; the inter-organizational collaboration gives not only challenges, but also opportunities for the participating organizations. Furthermore, the conditions and the reasons for collaborating can be used for improving the structure of an inter-organizational collaboration. Practical Information A Swedish economic association can be described as a legal entity which involves a minimum of three partners, with a common interest and where all members of the economic association are required to participate in the activities of the economic association. Originality/Value This study contributes to the field of inter-organizational knowledge management by providing insight from a Swedish economic association perspective. There is an apparent gap pointed out between theory driven and practical driven research, where this single case study aims to contribute to the practical field of applying inter-organizational knowledge management perspective into a real case scenario. The case is particularly interesting to study since there are 33 organizations involved in knowledge management, with knowledge bases of both private and public sectors, small- and middlesized organizations and from different branches.

Van, Huyssteen Hannes. "The influence of a performance management programme on the achievement of organisational and individual goals : a case study". Thesis, Port Elizabeth Technikon, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/63.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Many organisations are continuously searching for methods which can be used to improve performance. One such method is by means of implementing a performance management programme. This research study addresses the influence that a performance management programme has on the achievement of organisational and individual performance. To achieve this objective a comprehensive literature study was performed to determine the views on performance, and on performance management programmes. The study also included an investigation into the extent to which a performance management programme should be aligned with organisational and individual goals. Questionnaires, developed from the literature study, were distributed amongst randomly selected respondents, in order to determine the extent to which a specific organisation manages performance, in line with the guidelines provided by the literature study. The information obtained from the questionnaires were compared with the guidelines provided by the literature study in order to identify shortcomings in the influence that the performance management programme has on the achievement of organisational and individual goals at the selected organisation. The final step of this study entailed the formulation of recommendations. Three of these recommendations are regarded as critical to ensure the successful improvement of performance by means of a performance management programme: Firstly, it is of utmost importance that training and development, and the necessary resources to achieve objectives is provided. Secondly, feedback forms an integral part of a performance management programme. Those who provide feedback, need to acquire the necessary skills, so as to ensure that both positive and negative feedback is given to employees, which could ultimately enhance performance. Thirdly, the success of a performance management programme resides with both management and employees. Management need to be committed to the programme, and the well-being of their employees. Management also needs to be able to eliminate problems that negatively influence performance. On the other hand, employees need to realise that a performance management programme is not only linked to pay, but also the development of each individual, and the improvement of performance.

Abstract (sommario):
There is increasing attention to information users' feedback comments as they can be used to improve information resources. In contexts where information resources are rich in knowledge, optimal user feedback management is crucial for the information provider to make sure that users' information needs are met.In this dissertation, I worked with the Canadian Pharmacists Association (CPhA), which regularly uses health professionals' feedback to improve its publications. The CPhA wants an appropriate process to enable user feedback management in an effective and efficient manner. Thus, the present research addresses the overarching question "How can user feedback management be optimized for the CPhA?" The problem of how to optimize the management of user feedback was conceptualized in three parts: (1) the feedback comments, (2) the feedback management process, and (3) the factors affecting the development and implementation of optimal user feedback management in the organizational setting. The conceptual framework is derived from information studies, management science and organizational studies. A participatory action research approach was taken to conduct an organizational case study, using qualitative methods such as interview, observation, and document analysis.Research findings provide empirical evidence revealing four types of value of pharmacists' feedback comments to the CPhA, nine key issues in its user feedback management process, and twenty six factors affecting the innovation of user feedback management. Main contributions of this dissertation are as follows: this study empirically examined the usefulness of user feedback comments based on a value perspective in philosophy; two conceptual frameworks were proposed and demonstrated as relevant to studying information use and the related innovation in an organizational setting; and lessons have been learned from a comprehensive examination of the factors that affect innovation processes related to organizational information use.

Riechman, Jesse Avery. "The Southeastern Illinois Prescribed Burn Association: Spearheading Land Management Coalitions in the Midwest". OpenSIUC, 2012. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/894.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Fire in Midwestern ecosystems historically has provided many benefits, including promoting forest succession, maintaining wildlife habitat and reducing fuel loads. The Southeastern Illinois Prescribed Burn Association (SIPBA) is the only association of its kind in southern Illinois, designed to reintroduce prescribed fire to landowners in a practical context. The objectives of this research project were: 1) Interview members and crewpersons to collect data on the formation, maintenance, and future of SIPBA, 2) Outline the most common/salient issues driving landowners and stakeholders concerning the use of prescribed fire on their land in southern Illinois, and 3) Provide a conceptual model of the results to serve as a guide for future development of publicly conducted and implemented prescribed burning activities across southern Illinois and, ultimately, the Midwest. This study was implemented by semi-structured interviews of 28 key members of SIPBA. The responses from this population were collected and coded using NVivo 9 qualitative analysis software (NVivo 9 2011). Results indicate that challenges include stubborn remnants of the "Smokey Bear" attitude from the U.S. Forest Service anti-fire campaign, and that liability for an escaped wildfire is a reality for both the individual and for the association. In spite of these and other challenges identified by participants, landowners see SIPBA as a cost-effective solution to their land management needs. The results were interpreted as guidance for future dialogue between landowners and stakeholders and state and federal agencies in implementing prescribed burning programs. Implications include: "fire sells itself." Relatively little effort is needed to attract interest and recruit membership, and the benefits of a prescribed burn are easily evident. Alleviating concerns of the risks associated with fire is a primary objective for the organization, and there is a feeling of "safety in numbers" among membership. Finally, outside funding appears to be the limiting factor for both the capacity and potentially the longevity of the association, meaning that the development of a sustainable funding scheme could allow prescribed burn associations to remain in the Midwest. This case study of SIPBA membership is intended to facilitate cooperation between landowners and local burn associations, and also to serve as a model for the formation of future associations in similar areas of the Midwest.

Abstract (sommario):
Almost every day, we see and hear about disasters impacting individuals and households in communities worldwide. Impacts experienced include loss of life and injury, loss of property, and more. Disasters are often devastating for those who experience them. It is for this reason that preparedness is advocated by national and international organizations such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the United Nations. And, it is for this reason that researchers have often attempted to assess how prepared people are. Yet, what is this thing they call preparedness? What does it look like? What is involved in becoming a wholly prepared person? One might have assumed that organizations like FEMA and researchers would have addressed these fundamental questions prior to recommending that people become prepared or measuring how prepared people are, but that is not the case. The absence of an understanding of what preparedness is and entails is a critical theoretical gap with significant practical implications. This research explored the basic issue of what preparedness means and entails to people in Fako Division, Cameroon?a place threated by many hazards and which has experienced many disasters. From the analysis of the 33 interviews conducted in this study, the researcher found that preparedness is a dynamic state of readiness that is dependent on context, a social process, and a process of completing activities to save lives and minimize the effects of disasters. In addition, the researcher found that Cameroonians view a wholly prepared person as a) one who would have knowledge about hazards and what to do about them, b) one who would engage others, including their families and neighbors, in discussions about activities related to hazards and what to do about them, and c) one who would engage in activities to minimize loss from hazards, sustain themselves in the face of hazards, and flee from hazards. The findings from the interview data synch to a large extent with what is implied, but not clearly stated, in the existing research literature. The researcher address this synchrony and posit a definition of preparedness and identify the theoretical components of preparedness.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn the current age of innovative business financing opportunities available from fintech apps, social media crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and RocketHub, et.al., and friends and family private equity investors, start-up firms can strategically source their venture capital funds from many globally disperse organizations and individuals. As the firm in this case learned, the benefit of alternative investing sources comes with a critical hidden risk for corporate governance. After a financial restructuring, a typical Silicon Valley software start-up found itself with close to 300 external individual shareholders, some of whom had not been documented as accredited investors. The regulatory agency could decide that the prior actions of the founders and the decisions of the board had been prejudicial to the interests of the minority investors. The management of this small private company faced an atypical investor relations dilemma, before its initial public offering (IPO).

Abstract (sommario):
The Supervisory organ is a compulsory element in the governance structure of the European Structures for Business Association, namely the European Company (Societas Europaea) and the European Cooperative Society (Societas Cooperativa Europaea) that have chosen a two-tier system for their organizations. The organ under consideration presents a hybrid regulatory framework. On the one hand, these are the provisions in the regulations of the European Union, and, on the other, the national law regulations. The organ in question has specific characteristics. Its members are elected by the General meeting. The staff of the first supervisory board may be appointed in the statues. This should apply without prejudice to any employee participation arrangements determined pursuant to Directive 2003/72 / EC. The members of the Supervisory organ are elected for the term specified in the Statute of the association. Their maximum term of office after the expiry mandate date may not exceed six months. The package of powers includes constitutional, authoritative and controlling rights and obligations. The supervisory organ shall elect and dismiss members or an individual member of the management organ. In cases explicitly provided for in the statute of the association, a certain category of legal transactions cannot be concluded by the management organ without the permission of the supervisory organ. Its controlling functions are particularly important. The supervisory organ shall supervise the duties performed by the management organ. It may not itself exercise the power to manage the associations. The supervisory organ may not represent the associations in dealings with third parties. It shall represent the associations in dealings with the management body, or its members, in respect of litigation or the conclusion of contracts. The management organ shall report to the supervisory body at least once every three months on the progress and foreseeable developments of the association’s business, taking into account any information relating to undertakings controlled by the association that may significantly affect the progress of the association business. The members of the Supervisory organ are holders of Civil liability. Its legal basis is the relevant rules in the national law relating to joint stock companies or cooperative organizations in the Member States in which they have registered their office. This liability is based on the possible damage caused by illegal or incorrect acts or actions.

Abstract (sommario):
Project schedule forecasting is a core enabler of successful project management. Accurate schedule prediction leads to better resource management and ultimately, more value gained from the investment made for the project. The higher the complexity of the project, the higher the importance of having an accurate schedule prediction to minimize the risks associated with the project. The Field X Expansion Project of Company Y provided an excellent case study of the successful pilot implementation of supervised machine learning to predict the completion of the project tasks, which gave more precise results compared to the existing conservative approach. The Field X Expansion Project was designed to increase the total daily production from the gigantic Field X reservoir. The project’s cost was in the multi-billion dollars range, making it one of the highest investments of the decade in the oil and gas industry. Therefore, it is crucial to complete the project on schedule and within the budget to maintain its economic value. However, there were multiple challenges in the project that brought uncertainties and complexities to the schedule prediction, which cannot be solved using the conservative approach, such as the challenges in the project terrain and geography, the weather, and the mobilization of project logistics from around the globe. The conservative approach utilizing the off-the-shelf project management software has attempted to forecast past projects schedule more accurately. With this software, each project task and its estimated duration serve as inputs for the software to calculate the estimated project completion. To the team’s disappointment, the result showed overall schedule accuracy of only 40%. Moreover, using this method, the software can only calculate the estimated completion of the whole project, not the completion of the individual tasks. Although useful, it can still be improved. The software has been able to accumulate historical data from many previous projects utilizing this approach to be used as a data source for further improvement. With the advancement of data science technology and the immense amount of accumulated data from previous projects, there is an opportunity to leverage more advanced analytics methods such as big data analytics and machine learning to predict task completion with higher accuracy. This paper discusses the big data analytics approach to predicting individual project task completion. The method involved pulling the task data from the project management software database and analyzing the impact of various variables and features of the project on the completion of the individual project tasks that ultimately affected the project schedule. The features with the most significant impact were then used as predictors to forecast the completion of each project task. Applying this method to the Field X Expansion Project, the task completion can be predicted with 98.6% accuracy and 90% Receiver Operating Characteristic Area Under Curve (ROC AUC). This result is higher than the baseline accuracy of 40% applying the conservative approach. With the new accuracy, the project quality is improving, thus avoiding the loss of millions of dollars from poor project management.

Abstract (sommario):
Context: In the literature, there are few cases of Guillain Barré syndrome (GBS) in association with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). There is description of 19 neuropsychiatric syndromes associated with SLE, 12 of the central nervous system (CNS) and 7 of the peripheral nervous system (PNS). 10% of the patients with SLE and neurological manifestations have PNS complications. SLE is considered to have a late onset when it starts above 50 years of age and it consists in, on average, 26% of the total of individuals with SLE, however, in contrast to juvenile lupus, the number of studies is scarce. Case report: A patient diagnosed with late onset SLE who came to the emergency department due to seizure crisis and during the management, the patient developed an atypical form of GBS (motor, facial and bulbar), requiring mechanical ventilation and gastrostomy. The patient obtained a favorable outcome after pulse therapy and plasmapheresis. Conclusion: The atypical form of GBS is a very rare complication in patients with SLE, more studies need to be done for a standardized approach.

Abstract (sommario):
The occupational stress of the working-woman in a specific orthodox socio-cultural milieu and the effects of personality traits, which are considered as preventive, protective as well as assailing factors, that influence the stress in the workplace, is now a burning issue in organizational sectors. Thus the study sought to examine the relationship of personality attributes on the management of occupational role stress in the working woman(N=550) from 11 occupational groups varying in age, level of employment and working hours in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. For each subject, data were collected on 10 measures of occupational stress, 4 measures of coping resources, and 5 measures of big five personality traits by using Occupational Stress Inventory-R and NEO Personality Inventory-3. Findings of the study revealed that four groups of women employees, namely police professionals, bureaucrats, corporate engineers and employees in the unorganized sector, have both strong maladaptive role stress as well as psychological stress and strain. Bank employees and Government Engineers have mild maladaptive role stress and psychological stress and strain. All other groups namely, doctors, nurses, administrative staff, school-teachers, and college teachers have both normal adaptive role stress and psychological stress and strain. It was concluded that occupational stress and the coping resources of women employees were significantly influenced by their types of jobs, and factors of individual differences. Each of the Big Five Personality Traits have significant influence on occupational stress and coping resources of the employees. While four of the traits namely openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, and agreeableness helped to control and manage occupational stress by enhancing coping resources. Neuroticism increased the stress and decreased coping resources. The study implicates - exploring, prohibiting and managing the cause and effect relationship of occupational role stress of women in a workplace situation.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most prevalent cancers and considered one of the main causes of death among women worldwide. The genetic contribution to the incidence of BC is of great relevance, however, modifiable risk factors seem to be related to the development of this neoplasm. Several studies have provided evidence on the role of blood pressure (BP) levels in the carcinogenesis process. Goals assess the association between BP levels and the occurrence of BC. Methods: This is a case-control study nested in a cohort conducted between December 2013 and August 2014 in a municipality in the south of Brazil. Patients referred to oncology referral centers before starting adjuvant or neoadjuvant therapy for BC participated in the study. The control group was composed of women who visited the gynecology clinic during the same period. For each newly diagnosed case of BC, a control matched for age (±5 years) and menopausal status was included. Data were obtained through measurements with standardized techniques of BP levels and waist circumference (WC) measurement. Individuals with systolic BP ≥ 130 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ≥ 85 mmHg were considered to have altered blood pressure. Results: Eighty two patients with BC and 82 controls (n=164) were evaluated. Slightly different characteristics were found between the two groups: skin color (p=0.097), months of breastfeeding (p=0.185) and physical activity (p=0.160). These variables were included in the adjusted analysis. Regarding the BP measurement, patients with SBP ≥130 mmHg and with DBP ≥85 mmHg were 7.30 and 4.56 times more likely to have MF (Malignant), respectively (95%CI 2.43–21.91, p <0.001 and 95%CI 1.82–11.44, p=0.003). This relationship remained significant after adjustment for WC ≥80 cm (OR = 6.75, 95%CI 2.22–20.54 and OR=6.75, 95%CI 1.67–10.81). Conclusions: The results of this study corroborate the current findings in the literature, showing evidence of an association between BP and BC levels. BP assessment, already incorporated into clinical practice and considered a predictor of several comorbidities, may gain additional importance in the female population as a modifiable risk factor for the prevention of BC. Thus, the importance of interventions in the management of BP levels in this population is elucidated.

Abstract (sommario):
Post-stroke rehabilitation is important for them to regain back the mobility and fitness to do the things they did previously. Post-stroke rehabilitation process may include physical activity which requires extensive exercise plus patient's self motivation to complete the process. Recent studies have shown that intensive and repetitive training may be able to modify neuronal organization and facilitate the recovery of functional motor skills using a motricity recovery platform. The most important cause of long-term morbidity and disability in Europe is stroke, according to the European Stroke Association (ESO); not less than 40% of patients need active rehabilitation. From the perspective of modern stroke management, patients should be transferred as soon as possible to their home, monitored daily and stimulated in a multidisciplinary and motivational atmosphere. The aim of this project is to develop and implement a complex system of medical rehabilitation of patients using a system with different sensors placed on a platform for the recovery of fingers after a stroke. The developed platform is based on 5 weight sensors distributed each for one finger with an amplifier and an analogue-to-digital converter located at each sensor. These sensors will measure the degree of flexion/flexion of your fingers. So that a sufficient number of values and good accuracy can be determined to assess the subject's affection. The higher the sensor's sensitivity will change its electrical resistivity. The recorded signals will be sent to the AVR central unit (Arduino Studio), which will monitor the values obtained. We will return the data in a GUI to the computer via the Bluetooth connection on each individual sensor. This will monitor the patient's progress after each session.

Outcome Measure Harmonization and Data Infrastructure for Patient-Centered Outcomes Research in Depression: Final Report. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), giugno 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.23970/ahrqepcwhitepaperdepressionfinal.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Objective. The objective of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility and value of collecting harmonized depression outcome measures in the patient registry and health system settings, displaying the outcome measures to clinicians to support individual patient care and population health management, and using the resulting measures data to support patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR). Methods. The harmonized depression outcome measures selected for this project were response, remission, recurrence, suicide ideation and behavior, adverse effects of treatment, and death from suicide. The measures were calculated in the PRIME Registry, sponsored by the American Board of Family Medicine, and PsychPRO, sponsored by the American Psychiatric Association, and displayed on the registry dashboards for the participating pilot sites. At the conclusion of the data collection period (March 2020-March 2021), registry data were analyzed to describe implementation of measurement-based care and outcomes in the primary care and behavioral health care settings. To calculate and display the measures in the health system setting, a Substitutable Medical Apps, Reusable Technology (SMART) on Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resource (FHIR) application was developed and deployed at Baystate Health. Finally a stakeholder panel was convened to develop a prioritized research agenda for PCOR in depression and to provide feedback on the development of a data use and governance toolkit. Results. Calculation of the harmonized outcome measures within the PRIME Registry and PsychPRO was feasible, but technical and operational barriers needed to be overcome to ensure that relevant data were available and that the measures were meaningful to clinicians. Analysis of the registry data demonstrated that the harmonized outcome measures can be used to support PCOR across care settings and data sources. In the health system setting, this project demonstrated that it is technically and operationally feasible to use an open-source app to calculate and display the outcome measures in the clinician’s workflow. Finally, this project produced tools and resources to support future implementations of harmonized measures and use of the resulting data for research, including a prioritized research agenda and data use and governance toolkit. Conclusion. Standardization of outcome measures across patient registries and routine clinical care is an important step toward creating robust, national-level data infrastructure that could serve as the foundation for learning health systems, quality improvement initiatives, and research. This project demonstrated that it is feasible to calculate the harmonized outcome measures for depression in two patient registries and a health system setting, display the results to clinicians to support individual patient management and population health, and use the outcome measures data to support research. This project also assessed the value and burden of capturing the measures in different care settings and created standards-based tools and other resources to support future implementations of harmonized outcome measures in depression and other clinical areas. The findings and lessons learned from this project should serve as a roadmap to guide future implementations of harmonized outcome measures in depression and other clinical areas.

Abstract (sommario):
Individual species are intricate parts of complex ecosystems; when one is threatened, others may be put in danger as well. While many countries have basic laws that aim to protect threatened species, endangered species management attempts to work with various groups to preserve biodiversity and maintain viable ecosystems. There are numerous approaches to endangered species management that differ by species and by country. This module explores the basic steps—identifying status, examining threats and planning recovery—with examples covering varied ecosystems and challenges. Through a case study and accompanying modeling exercise, students apply endangered species management techniques to the case of California condors.

Beck, Tanya, e Ping Wang. Morphodynamics of barrier-inlet systems in the context of regional sediment management, with case studies from West-Central Florida, USA. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), settembre 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41984.

Abstract (sommario):
The temporal and spatial scales controlling the morphodynamics of barrier-inlet systems are critical components of regional sediment management practice. This paper discusses regional sediment management methods employed at multiple barrier-inlet systems, with case studies from West-Central Florida. A decision-support tool is proposed for regional sediment management with discussion of its application to barrier-inlet systems. Connecting multiple barrier islands and inlets at appropriate spatio-temporal scales is critical in developing an appropriately scoped sediment management plan for a barrier-inlet system. Evaluating sediment bypassing capacity and overall inlet morphodynamics can better inform regional sand sharing along barrier-inlet coastlines; particularly where sediment resources are scarce and a close coupling between inlet dredging and beach placement is vital to long-term sustainable management. Continued sea-level rise and anthropogenic activities may intensify the need for investigating longer-term processes and expanding regional planning at a centennial timescale and are acknowledged as challenging tasks for RSM studies. Specifically, we suggested that a regionally focused, multi-inlet study was necessary for management plan of individual inlet for the west-central Florida case studies. Key recommendations based on the case studies are included.

This project was part of technical cooperation ME-T1254, financed by the Knowledge Partnership Korean Fund for Technology and Innovation of the Republic of Korea. At KRIHS, the National Infrastructure Research Division coordinated the project and the Global Development Partnership Center (GDPC) provided the funding. The case of Santander as an object of study in the field of smart cities and as an international reference is known for the widespread deployment of devices, which makes it unique in the world as a testing ground. This, coupled with the diversity of services that are integrating technology throughout, means that today, the city, through its council, the university, and the successful tenderers for municipal services, is participating in more than 15 international projects. The next step, already underway, will be the integration of all smart services (e.g., water supply, solid waste collection, street lighting, and public transportation) into a single smart platform that will allow them to interact with each other and represents a step toward efficiency and smart city management.

Anyang, a 600,000 population city near Seoul is developing international recognition on its smart city project that has been implemented incrementally since 2003. This initiative began with the Bus Information System to enhance citizen's convenience at first, and has been expanding its domain into wider Intelligent Transport System as well as crime and disaster prevention in an integrated manner. Anyang is evaluated as a benchmark for smart city with a 2012 Presidential Award in Korea and receives large number of international visits. Anyang's Integrated Operation and Control Center (IOCC) acts as the platform that gathers, analyzes and distributes information for mobility, disasters management and crime. Anyang is currently utilizing big data for policy development and is continuing its endeavor to expand its smart city services into areas such as waste and air quality management. Anyang's success factors are the government officials' continuous willingness towards service development and the establishment of cooperation system among the smart city-related organizations.

As an international destination for theme parks, sporting events and conventions, Orlando approaches the smart city operation through Orlando Operations Center (OOC), an integrated facility established in 2001 by the Mayor after the 1997 hurricane. The major features of the integrated operation include the sharing of fiber optic networks and CCTV cameras, and close cooperation between transport, police and fire departments for road, criminal and disaster incident, and the emergency operation center within the OOC taking the lead in case of special event management and large-scale natural disasters. Along with the OOC, the city hall also utilizes smart city functions such as red light violation enforcement through detectors, bus management through AVL technology, GPS garbage truck tracking, and GIS water management. Orlando has experienced significant benefits in terms of shortened decision-making and response time, reduced operation cost, and improved environmental impacts, as well as enhanced service quality and communication with citizen.

Pangyo is a new city built from 2003 onwards near Seoul with a vision to become the Silicon Valley of Korea. Approximately 75 million USD of the development gain was allocated to smart city implementation, which took place in one shot within 3-4 years along with the city construction. Pangyo classifies its services into smart portal, facility management, security, disaster, and environment. Interesting aspects of Pangyo are the use of smart kiosk media boards for information provision and real-time management of street lights and waterworks. Key advantage of Pangyo is the low concern for investment overlap from simultaneous development of new city and smart city system, which also enabled high degree of integration of various functions in a spacious smart city operation center as well as utilization of fiber-optic network. Pangyo is currently making various attempts to generate revenue to cover maintenance cost through attracting advertisement on media boards and kiosks, and providing education contents to citizens at low charge.

Abstract (sommario):
Doing development differently rests on deliberate efforts to reflect and learn, not just about what programmes are doing and achieving, but about how they are working. This is particularly important for an action research programme like Child Labour: Action- Research-Innovation in South and South-Eastern Asia (CLARISSA), which is implemented by a consortium of organisations from across the research and development spectrum, during a rapidly changing global pandemic. Harnessing the potential of diverse skills and complementary strengths across partners in responding to the complex challenge of the worst forms of child labour, requires capacity to work together in novel ways. This Research and Evidence Paper documents how CLARISSA approached capacity development, and what we learnt from our challenges and successes. From the start, the programme incorporated a capacity development strategy resting on self-assessment of a wide range of behavioural and technical competencies that were deemed important for programme implementation, formal training activities, and periodic review of progress through an after-action review (AAR) process. An inventory of capacity development activities that took place during the first year of implementation reveals a wide range of additional, unplanned activities, enabled by the programme’s flexibility and adaptive management strategy. These are organised into eight modalities, according to the individual or collective nature of the activity, and its sequencing – namely, whether capacity development happens prior to, during, or after (from) implementation. We conclude with some reflections on the emergent nature of capacity development. Planning capacity development in an adaptive programme provides a scaffolding in terms of time, resources, and legitimacy that sustains adaptiveness. We also recognise the gaps that remain to be addressed, particularly on scaling up individual learning to collective capabilities, and widening the focus from implementation teams to individuals working at consortium level.
