Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe spatial distribution of the abundance indices of the deep-water rose shrimp Parapenaeus longirostris was investigated applying geostatistical techniques on data collected in the central southern Tyrrhenian Sea from bottom trawl surveys carried out in the autumn since 1994. Experimental variograms (auto and cross) were constructed on the variable "abundance index", expressed in kg/km2, and those variogram models best describing the spatial continuity were detected and validated by the jackknife technique. The spatial structure of the "abundance index", exhibiting a similar pattern throughout the surveys, was described by a spherical model and characterized by a spatial continuity at a small scale level in the whole area. The linear geostatistical approach was applied by different kriging techniques and the estimates extended to the spatio-temporal dimension, in this case adopting the co-regionalized models and applying the cokriging technique. This method applied to the spatial dimension (abundance index and depth). Also, linking the spatial and temporal dimension of the abundance indices, measured in two different years, contributed to represent a more accurate picture of the abundance distribution, and allowed the detection of a temporal persistence of the localization of areas with higher abundance, reducing the standard deviation of the estimation error. This information, if coupled with an analysis of the geographical allocation of the fishing effort, could be of importance in stock assessment, allowing some variant application of the composite surplus production models.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2000.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The success of policies aimed at economic development cannot be monitored and evaluated without development indicators. These indicators are also crucial in comparing levels of development across time and space so as to come a greater understanding of the development process. Yet, economic development does not mean the same thing to everyone. As a result, there exists a variety of indicators of economic development. Five main classes of development indicators are distinguished on the basis of the shift over time in our understanding of economic development (Chapter 1). A distinction is drawn between indicators of national income and economic growth (Chapter 3), employment, unemployment and underemployment (Chapter 4), and poverty and inequality (Chapter 5). Social indicators (Chapter 6) and composite indices (Chapter 7) of economic development represent two futher classes of development indicators. These indicators differ in terms of their content, method and technique, comparative application, simplicity, clarity, focus, availability and flexibility. These main classes of development indicators are evaluated with reference to these dimensions of measurement which are described in detail in Chapter 2. There is no one indicator that can be described as an ideal, all encompassing measure of economic development, at least not in terms of its performance on these dimensions of measurement. Hence, the measurement of development remains imperfect, but nonetheless makes an invaluable contribution to the study of economic development. In fact, development studies will be impossible without access to such a variety of development indicators. Given the importance of development indicators in development studies, two new composite indices of development are presented here to address two specific gaps in indicator research. Indices of Human Security (HSIs) and Inefficiency ratios are developed to determine the extent to which countries have made progress on human security as defined by the UNDP (Chapter 8). Progress is assessed in terms of both effort and outcomes, as well as the extent to which efforts are actually translated into outcomes. Indices of Reconstruction and Development (RDIs) are employed to measure the extent to which the nine provinces of South Africa have made progress on the development objectives described in the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) (Chapter 9). The measurement results suggest that there remain substantial disparities in progress on both human security and reconstruction and development. These new composite indices are also employed to determine those development characteristics associated with progress on human security and reconstruction and development. So, for example, disparities in human security are associated with certain urban and population dynamics, as well as communications capacity and infrastructural development. Progress on reconstruction and development is associated with lower population pressure, higher matric pass rates, less poverty and inequality, and more political representativeness at the provincial level. The RDIs also underscore the extent to which progress on the RDP has not materialised in rural areas. Furthermore, current provincial disparities in progress on reconstruction and development appear still to be indicative of the racial dynamics of development so characteristic of the Apartheid era.

Abstract (sommario):
The design of our cities and regions is crucial for our health and well-being. It notably impacts the quality of our living environment, the air we breathe, the water we drink, our access to green spaces, healthcare services, and employment opportunities (OMS & ONU, 2021). Indeed, our health are influenced by numerous factors that go beyond the scope of pathology alone. The focus of this thesis is to develop a decision support tool that local actors can use to better consider health in urban planning and development plans, documents, and projects. The first objective of the thesis is to characterize the environmental and social health inequalities (ESHI) at the sub-municipal level within the perimeter of the European metropolis of Lille's Territorial Coherence Scheme. A literature review and thematic workshops involving local and regional stakeholders were organized, and a methodological framework was proposed for constructing spatialized composite indices of vulnerability and resilience. Furthermore, a methodology for analyzing the profiles of territory categories resulting from the joint interpretation of the two indices was developed. The second objective is to support and promote the consideration of health issues in urban development projects by proposing an experimental approach applied to two development projects. The in-depth analysis of environmental health issues in the two neighborhoods, along with the contribution of the working group composed of the two project teams and field observations, helped to better understand the factors of vulnerability and resilience present in these neighborhoods. It also enabled the evaluation of the impact of the development project on these neighborhoods and the proposal of a theoretical modeling of improvement prospects for the two development proposals. The obtained results highlight the importance of considering not only the vulnerability and resilience factors of territories but also the spatial dimension. Dividing the European metropolis of Lille's Territorial Coherence Scheme into homogeneous zones would facilitate understanding the dynamics of ESHI at a fine scale. The use of composite indices at the scale of a development project brings to light the issue of transversality and the impact of all involved dimensions. At this scale, composite indices provide an overall vision of the issues within a neighborhood, they also reveal the limitations of development policies for reducing ESHI

Abstract (sommario):
Composite metamaterials are periodic metal-dielectric structures operating at wavelengths larger than the structure period. If properly designed these structures behave as homogeneous media described by effective permittivity and permeability parameters. These effective parameters can be designed to take values in domains that are not available in naturally occurring media; notably it is possible to design composite metamaterials with simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability, or, in other words, with a negative refractive index. However, in many experimental or numerical studies it is far from obvious that the use of a homogeneous model is justified for a given structure at a given wavelength. This issue is often glossed over in the literature.
In this work I take a detailed look at the fundamental assumptions on which effective medium models rely and put forward a method for determining frequency domains where a given structure may or may not be accurately described by homogeneous effective medium parameters. This work opens the door to a more detailed understanding of the transition between homogeneous and inhomogeneous behavior in composite metamaterials, in particular by introducing the novel notions of custom made effective medium model, and of meta-photonic crystal.

Abstract (sommario):
This work examines SW Indian Ocean tropical cyclone (TC) structure as a function of movement using ECMWF gridded data. Analyses of the mean summer climate for the period 1987 1992 shown that conditions conducive to the development ofTCs are present between the latitudes 5° and 15°S. Six westward moving TCs are selected to form the westward moving composite TC and four are used in the recurving TC composite from 3-days before the maximum surface intensity to 1 day after. The westward moving composite was found to have a steady TC signature. Comparisons were made with TC Firinga which passed near Mauritius on 29 January 1989. The recurving TC composite was found to exhibit rapid growth with sharp parameters tendencies. Interaction with a sub tropical trough is seen in both TC composites. Upper level westerly winds create effective uplift which strengthens the recurving TC on the poleward side. Spectral analysis of a rainfall index compiled from Mauritius data demonstrates spectral peaks at the seasonal and intra-seasonal scale. Three peaks were identified. one within the 40-60 day Madden Julian Oscillation. one at 23 days and one with a 16 day oscillation. The 23 day oscillation was found to have a highest spectral power. The results of TC and rainfall analyses offer useful insights to the climate and weather of the SW Indian Ocean.

Abstract (sommario):

For cost-effectiveness and efficiency, many large-scale general-purpose cohort studies are being assembled within health-care providers who use electronic health records. Two key features of such data are that incident disease is interval-censored between irregular visits and pre-existing (prevalent) disease is left-censored. Because prevalent disease is not always immediately diagnosed, some disease diagnosed at later visits are actually undiagnosed prevalent disease. I consider prevalent disease as a point mass at time zero for clinical applications where there is no interest in time of prevalent disease onset. I demonstrate that the naive Kaplan-Meier cumulative risk estimator underestimates risks at early time points and overestimates later risks. I propose a general family of mixture models that we call prevalence-incidence models. Parameters for parametric prevalence-incidence models, such as the logistic regression and Weibull survival (logistic-Weibull) model, are estimated by direct likelihood maximization or EM algorithm. Non-parametric methods are proposed to calculate cumulative risks for cases without covariates. I compare naive Kaplan-Meier, logistic-Weibull, and non-parametric estimates of cumulative risk in the cervical cancer screening program at Kaiser Permanente Northern California. Kaplan-Meier methods provided poor estimates while the logistic-Weibull model was a close fit to the non-parametric. My findings support use of logistic-Weibull models over Kaplan-Meier methods to develop risk estimates for informing U.S. risk-based cervical cancer screening guidelines. Harrell's c index is widely used to measure the accuracy in predicting univariate survival outcomes. However, survival outcomes relating to a disease of interest may show up in multiple endpoints of interest. I propose two extensions of Harrell's c index for composite survival outcomes that account for frequencies of occurrences and the severity/importance of the outcomes. A weighted C index is proposed for a disease process with multiple equally important endpoints, and a most severe comparable C index is proposed for a disease process with a rare primary outcome and a correlated secondary outcome. Asymptotic properties are derived based on theorems for U-statistics. In the simulation studies, my extensions gain efficiency and power in identifying true prognostic variables. I illustrate these novel concordance indices using the Epidemiology of Diabetes Intervention and Complications (EDIC) and the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) trials. In EDIC, the prognosis of diabetes patients at risk for multiple equally important microvascular complications are evaluated using the weighted C index. In DPP, patients with impaired glucose resistance (IGR) who may either progress to type II diabetes or regress to normal glucose resistance (NGR). The proposed most severe comparable index better evaluates the accuracy in predicting diabetes risk with the help of auxiliary NGR outcomes.

By spectroscopic ellipsometry, we study the optical properties in the range of UV-Visible-Infrared of composites films made of polymer and gold nanoparticles. We study the relation between these measurement and the structure of the nanocomposites, that we study by atomic force microscopy in particular. We distinguish the analysis of thicks films (tridimensionals) and thins (quasi-bidimensionals). In both of case, we confronte these experimentals results to the theoric models of effectives medium derivated for Maxwell-Garnett in particular

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract It is known that Shor’s algorithm can break many cryptosystems such as RSA encryption, provided that large-scale quantum computers are realized. Thus far, several experiments for the factorization of the small composites such as 15 and 21 have been conducted using small-scale quantum computers. In this study, we investigate the details of quantum circuits used in several factoring experiments. We then indicate that some of the circuits have been constructed under the condition that the order of an element modulo a target composite is known in advance. Because the order must be unknown in the experiments, they are inappropriate for designing the quantum circuit of Shor’s factoring algorithm. We also indicate that the circuits used in the other experiments are constructed by relying considerably on the target composite number to be factorized.

Abstract (sommario):
Components such as bladed rings, and bladed disks fabiricated out of titanium matrix composites were extensively explored in the two decades since about 1990 as light weight replacements for conventional superalloy blades and disks in the intermediate hot stages of gas turbines. One of the challenges, which has hindered their adoption is the relative unreliability of the composite components; nominally identical Ti composite specimen display a much larger variability in strength than their superalloy counterparts. In the present work, we have quantified the reliability of Ti matrix composites by developing a detailed micromechanical-statistical model of their failure. The micromechanical model resolves fibres, matrix, and the interface, and accounts for such failure modes as fibre breakage, matrix cracking, matrix plasticity, interfacial sliding, and debonding. It also accounts for mechanical interaction between these various failure modes. The mechanical model’s predictions are validated against synchotron X-ray measurements reported in the literature, both after loading, and unloading. Using the detailed micromechanical model, Ti matrix composite was simulated following a Monte Carlo framework. These simulations yield the empirical strength distribution of the Ti matrix composite, and insights into the dominant failure mode. The latter allows the construction of a stochastic model of composite failure. The stochastic model can be used to determine safe working loads as a function of composite size for any desired reliability level.

Abstract (sommario):
This study details the synthesis and characterization of composites and composite foams of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT). LDPE-MWCNT composites were prepared by melt blending the components in a twin screw compounder and their foams were produced by batch foaming using CO2 as the blowing agent. The composites were characterized for dispersion using SEM and image results indicate good dispersability of MWCNT in LDPE with the formation of a MWCNT network in the LDPE matrix. Thermal and rheological properties of the composites were characterized and results indicate that even a small amount (1 wt.%) of MWCNTs can significantly affect the crystallization kinetics and the rheological behavior. Batch foaming results of the composites depict MWCNTs as heterogeneous nucleation sites for gas bubbles as indicated by the increase in cell density of the composite foams when compared to LDPE foams.

Abstract (sommario):
Natural fiber reinforcements have attracted interest in sustainable manufacturing as a replacement for synthetic fibers in polymer composites. In this study, two natural fibers – jute and ramie were reinforced in three different proportions with epoxy resin and hardener to fabricate polymer matrix composites. Silicon Carbide (SiC) was used as a filler material in the three different compositions with jute and ramie fibers. All the composite specimens were fabricated using the hand-lay-up technique. The water absorption property of the fabricated composites was examined. Test results indicate that jute and ramie fiber composite with epoxy resin possesses high water absorption properties; further addition of SiC as filler material into the composite fabrication shows a decrease in water absorption percentage. The work also presents linear regression models (LRA) for forecasting the natural composites' water absorption behavior.

Abstract (sommario):
Several procedures were developed that predict maturity (stability) of composts prepared from municipal solid wastes (MSW). A respirometry procedure, based O2 uptake by compost, predicted (R2=0.90) the growth response of ryegrass in composts and an acceptable level of maturity. Spectroscopic methods (CPMAS13-NMR and DRIFT spectroscopy) showed that the stabilizing compost contained increasing levels of aromatic structures. All procedures predicted acceptable plant growth after approximately 110 days of composting. MSW compost suppressed diseases caused by a broad spectrum of plant pathogens including Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium aphanidermatum and Fusarium oxysporum. A strain of Pantoea agglomerans was identified that caused lysis of hyphae of R. solani. Evidence was obtained, suggesting that thermophilic biocontrol agents also might play a role in suppression. 13C-NMR spectra revealed that the longevity of the suppressive effect against Pythium root rot was determined by the concentration of readily biodegradable carbohydrate in the substrate, mostly present as cellulose. Bacterial species capable of inducing biocontrol were replaced by those not effective as suppression was lost. The rate of uptake of 14C-acetate into microbial biomass in the conducive substrate was not significantly different from that in the suppressive substrate although specific activity was higher. The suppressive composts induced systemic acquired resistance in cucumjber roots to Pythium root rot and to anthracnose in the foliage. Composts also increased peroxidase activity in plants by the conducive substrate did not have these effects. In summary, the composition of the organic fraction determined bacterial species composition and activity in the substrate, which in turn regulated plant gene expression relative to biological control.

Abstract (sommario):
Induced Systemic Resistance (ISR) is a highly variable property that can be induced by compost amendment of potting media and soils. For example, previous studies showed that only 1 of 79 potting mixes prepared with different batches of mature composts produced from several different types of solid wastes were able to suppress the severity of bacterial leaf spot of radish caused by Xanthomonas campestris pv. armoraciae compared with disease on plants produced in a nonamended sphagnum peat mix. In this project, microbial consortia in the rhizosphere of plants grown in ISR-active compost-amended substrates were characterized. The plants used included primarily cucumber but also tomato and radish. Rhizosphere microbial consortia were characterized using multiple molecular tools including DGGE (Israel) and T -RFLP (Ohio) in both ISR-active field plots and potting media. Universal as well as population-specific bacterial and fungal PCR primers were utilized. T -RFLP analyses using universal bacterial primers showed few significant differences in overall bacterial community composition in ISR-active and inactive substrates (Ohio). In addition, the community members which were significantly different varied when different ISR-activecomposts were used (Ohio). To better characterize the shifts in microbial community structure during the development of ISR, population specific molecular tools were developed (Israel, Ohio).-PCR primers were designed to detect and quantify bacterial groups including Pyrenomycetes, Bacillus, Pan toea, Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas and Streptomyces as well as Trichoderma and Fusarium; two groups of fungi that harbor isolates which are ISR active (Isreal and Ohio). Bacterial consortia associated with cucumber plants grown in compost-amended potting mixtures were shown to be dominated by the phylogenetic taxon Bacteroidetes, including members of the genus Chryseobacterium, which in some cases have been shown to be involved in biocontrol (Israel). Nested-PCR-DGGE analyses coupled with long l6S rDNA sequencing, demonstrated that the Chryseobacteriumspp. detected on seed and the root in compost-amended treatments were derived from the compost itself. The most effective ISR inducing rhizobacterial strains were identified as Bacillus sp. based on partial sequencing of l6S rDNA. However, these strains were significantly less effective in reducing the severity of disease than Trichoderma hamatum382 (T382). A procedure was developed for inoculation of a compost-amended substrate with T -382 which consistently induced ISR in cucumber against Phytophthora blight caused by Phytophthora capsiciand in radish against bacterial spot (Ohio). Inoculation of compost-amended potting mixes with biocontrol agents such as T -382 and other microbes that induce systemic resistance in plants significantly increased the frequency of systemic disease control obtained with natural compost amendments.

Abstract (sommario):
Composite materials continue to gain wider acceptance in the pipeline industry for repairing a range of pipeline anomalies. This success is due in large part to two factors. The first contributor is the execution of comprehensive research programs such as the first PRCI MATR-3-3, State of the Art Assessment of Composite Repair Systems and this second program contained herein focused on evaluating composite materials to repair damaged pipelines. The second factor associated with the widespread use of composite materials is the successful two-decade history that composite materials have had in repairing pipelines. While there have been a few unfortunate incidents in the field (primarily related to poor installation), composite materials have proven themselves to be well suited for repairing high pressure gas and liquid pipelines. The need existed for a set of integrity assessment procedures and guidelines to ensure proper use and application of composite repair materials for mechanically-damaged pipes. The results of this program indicate that when properly designed and installed, composite repair systems are able to restore integrity to mechanically-damaged pipes to a state that makes them fit for continued use at their normal design conditions. When composite materials are used for repairs, whether the repair involves corrosion, dents, or other anomalies, an integrity assessment should be completed. The integrity assessment procedures and guidelines presented in this report include an estimate of the future operating conditions to ensure that the design is adequate for the intended service.

Abstract (sommario):
Original objectives: Our initial project objectives were to 1) Determine and compare the composition of seed-colonizing microbial communities on seeds, 2) Determine the dynamics of development of microbial communities on seeds, and 3) Determine and compare the composition of seed-colonizing microbial communities with the composition of those in the soil and rhizosphere of the plants. Revisions to objectives: Our initial work on this project was hampered by the presence of native Pythium species in the soils we were using (in the US), preventing us from getting accurate assessments of spermosphere microbial communities. In our initial work, we tried to get around this problem by focusing on water potentials that might reduce damage from native Pythium species. This also prompted some initial investigation of the oomycete communities associated seedlings in this soil. However, for this work to proceed in a way that would allow us to examine seed-colonizing communities on healthy plants, we needed to either physically treat soils or amend soils with composts to suppress damage from Pythium. In the end, we followed the compost amendment line of investigation, which took us away from our initial objectives, but led to interesting work focusing on seed-associated microbial communities and their functional significance to seed-infecting pathogens. Work done in Israel was using suppressive compost amended potting mix throughout the study and did not have such problems. Our work focused on the following objectives: 1) to determine whether different plant species support a microbial induced suppression of Pythium damping-off, 2) to determine whether compost microbes that colonize seeds during early stages of seed germination can adequately explain levels of damping-off suppression observed, 3) to characterize cucumber seed-colonizing microbial communities that give rise to the disease suppressive properties, 4) assess carbon competition between seed-colonizing microbes and Pythium sporangia as a means of explaining Pythium damping-off suppression. Background: Earlier work demonstrated that seed-colonizing microbes might explain Pythium suppression. Yet these seed-colonizing microbial communities have never been characterized and their functional significance to Pythium damping-off suppression is not known. Our work set out to confirm the disease suppressive properties of seed-colonizing microbes, to characterize communities, and begin to determine the mechanisms by which Pythium suppression occurs. Major Conclusions: Compost-induced suppression of Pythium damping-off of cucumber and wheat can be explained by the bacterial consortia colonizing seeds within 8 h of sowing. Suppression on pea was highly variable. Fungi and archaea play no role in disease suppression. Potentially significant bacterial taxa are those with affinities to Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Current sequencing efforts are trying to resolve these taxa. Seed colonizing bacteria suppress Pythium by carbon competition, allowing sporangium germination by preventing the development of germ tubes. Presence of Pythium had a strong effect on microbial community on the seed.
