Abstract (sommario):
The occurrence of disparities in society with female characters, Disney stories told about the existence of heroine characters in the Disney renaissance era. Disney stories had become part of a show culture that has evolved into the reproduction of gender roles. This study was conducted to find the female representation as a heroine depicted in the Disney renaissance as well as to analyze the reasons how Disney heroines struggle in claiming their equality as a woman in their society. This study was categorized into qualitative and descriptive research methods. Furthermore, this study used the theory of the renowned feminist existentialism by Simone de Beauvoir, one of the Feminist icons and Philosophers of existentialism, with her book; The Second Sex, Beauvoir represented the section of the independent woman; a woman could choose independence, which means continuing to carry out the process toward freedom without having the insight of a predetermined goal. Therefore, this study aimed to elaborate how the female representation as the women to fight their equality to their desire for freedom. Thus, the heroine character was expected to be able to contribute to society in terms of gender awareness, including women.

Abstract (sommario):
<p><strong> </strong>Mrs. Gaskell is a very important woman writer in the 19th century in Britain, and she is famous for her social novels, in which she highlights complicated social conflicts. <em>North and South </em>is usually considered as the turning point of Mrs. Gaskell’s literary creation, in which she suggests for the first time that there should be a hope of a reconciliation between the working class and the bourgeoisie. Also, the author vividly depicted an independent woman with a sharp mind and a deliberate manner in the book, that is, Margaret Hale. She seems to be very special when compared with the women around her and very attractive to men for her peculiar thoughts as well as her beautiful looks. This thesis mainly analyzes the attractive heroine of the novel in three aspects: her independent character, her independent action and her independent thoughts. What’s more, the thesis aims to shed light on the characteristics a “New Woman” should be endowed with. The heroine, to some extent, is the author Mrs. Gaskell herself, rejecting inferiority to men and defending the rights to express themselves freely. All in all, this thesis tries to enlighten people on woman’s position in today’s society by deriving some inspirations from the literary work.</p>

Barova-Özcan, Pana. "From a Romantic Shōjo to an Independent Otaku: The Transformations of the Female Protagonist in the Sarashina nikki Manga". Japanese Language and Literature 55, n. 1 (21 aprile 2021): 331–71. http://dx.doi.org/10.5195/jll.2021.156.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the three manga adaptations of Sarashina nikki (The Sarashina Diary, ca. 1058) written by Sugawara no Takasue no musume (Sugawara no Takasue's daughter) (1008-1059). The three manga adaptations were created in the early 1990s and in 2014, and belong to the genre of shōjo manga. Focusing on key episodes and scenes in the three manga rewritings, I examine how each recreates the heroine and why specific images of the eleventh-century woman emerged at the time they did. I argue that the shifting representations of the female protagonist in Sarashina nikki reflect social developments in Japan since the 1970s, including the decreasing importance of patriarchal norms and traditional roles assigned to women as wives and mothers. These adaptations show how the stereotypical view of young girls and women as cute (kawaii), which implies obedience, passivity, and dependence, has shifted towards a new, modern image of Japanese women who make independent choices regarding their social roles and careers.

Abstract (sommario):
<p>The paper is devoted to the analysis of Mrs de Winter, one of the main characters from Daphne du Maurier’s <em>Rebecca</em>, as<em> </em>an example of a Gothic figure. The analysis traces the stages in the development of the heroine by demonstrating how she first becomes, through the process of <em>gothicisation</em>, “the Gothic damsel in distress.” Vulnerable and easily threatened, she is defined solely in relation to Mr de Winter, her aristocratic husband, whose status she is unable to match. As a result of her growth as an individual, Mrs de Winter is <em>degothicised.</em>We witness a change in her attitude toward her tormentors: she no longer feels intimidated; she starts developing in what we view as an identity-building process her public and personal sense of a mature and independent individual.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
Our essay continues the critical discussion of Flora Nwapa’s treatment of the Ogene family’s involvement in the slave trade and domestic slavery in Efuru, as first articulated in Taiwo Adetunju Osinubi’s 2014 article “Provincializing Slavery: Atlantic Economies in Flora Nwapa’s Efuru”. We agree with Osinubi’s reading of the compromised liberation that Efuru represents and how patriarchal structures are upheld throughout most of the novel. However, we argue that Nwapa begins to outline an important shift towards her novel’s end: from a patriarchal, colonial order back to a matriarchal, precolonial one – at least for the heroine. We support this assertion by revisiting the relationship between Efuru and Ogea to point out its ambivalences, paying close attention to their dynamic at the book’s conclusion. Moreover, we contend that this change is most evident when Efuru is chosen by Uhamiri. We maintain that the wealth Uhamiri bestows provides a way out of paternalistic structures, as it serves as an antidote to the patriarchal inheritance by ensuring that Efuru has a source of income independent from her paternal family’s blood money.

Abstract (sommario):
This article focuses on the relationship of Zahra; the heroine of the novel, The story of Zahra by Hanan al-Shaykh with "male" community. Zahra is not only the victim of her family but of an entire society also. Her father who is always cynical of her face which is full of pimples and expected spinsterhood, to her mother and her betrayal of her husband with her lover, to her spoiled and failed brother, her family friend who raped her and forced her to abort twice. Her failed marriage to a friend of her uncle and her return to her homeland, which seemed to be suffering from the scourge of war, and her belief in her ability to distract the mind of the sniper by establishing a relationship with him. Zahra couldn't be an independent individual in her society, but a tool that everyone can see from his perspective. Zahra suffered from the oppression of the patriarchal society, which gave the man the oppression and abuse of women without any deterrent or a pretext for their oppression. Hanan al-Shaykh The Story of Zahra is a real example of what most women in the Third World suffer from the dominance of male society and their control over women, spiritually and physically.

Abstract (sommario):
The re-writing of a fairy tale caters for characters, settings and values that have undergone changes, be it explicit or implicit. In Juliet Marillier’s Wildwood Dancing, the main female character Jena is transformed from the passive and obedient Twelfth/Youngest Princess of Grimm’s The Worn-Out Dancing Shoes into a brave and sensible figure. She challenges the oppression of patriarchal rules by taking control of her household in her father’s absence, securing her four sisters’ welfare, and keeping secret of their nocturnal dancing trips in the Other Kingdom despite being threatened by her domineering male cousin. In this way, Gerard Genette’s Hypertextuality strives to investigate the underlying patterns manifested in both literary works by applying the Re-vision element. Through it, Jena’s and the Twelfth/Youngest Princess’ sensibility trait and the socio-cultural settings surrounding them are highlighted in order to determine the importance of the overall hypertextuality process that takes place between the two. Later, Jena emerges as the more influential heroine than her predecessor character because she does not stop struggling to be regarded as an independent young woman who can always give advice and make decisions for her family affairs sensibly. Also, it is eventually proven that sensibility is indeed a strong weapon to be possessed by women in order to empower themselves against the conventions of a patriarchal world.

Abstract (sommario):
The denouement of Charlotte Brontë’sJane Eyrecontains multiple happy rewards for its heroine: a fortune, strangers turned friends turned cousins, the self-elimination of Bertha, and a Rochester still alive, still in England, and now free to marry. The hefty twenty-thousand-pound legacy (of which Jane only keeps one-fourth) bequeathed to her by her late uncle John Eyre allows Jane to return to the maimed Rochester and gleefully proclaim, “I am an independent woman now” (Brontë 501; ch. 37). Citing such financial independence, Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar briefly mention Jane's inheritance as the event that allows Jane to “follow her own will” and marry Rochester on terms of equality (367). Similarly, Nancy Armstrong writes that “[m]ore so perhaps than her virtue or passion, it is an endowment from Jane's wealthy uncle that makes her happiness possible” (47). Other critics, such as Elaine Freedgood and Susan Meyer, focus on the origin of the fortune – Madeira – and suggest that such a colonially associated locale implicates Jane in the finances of colonialism and even of slavery. Unlike those critics, however, I will claim that Jane's complicated relationship to the inheritance distances her from the problematic taint of the money's colonial associations and marks her non-conformity with and resistance to the economic practices of the British Empire.

Abstract (sommario):

Nyh, Johan. "From Snow White to Frozen : An evaluation of popular gender representation indicators applied to Disney’s princess films". Thesis, Karlstads universitet, Institutionen för geografi, medier och kommunikation, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-36877.

Abstract (sommario):
Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods.

Abstract (sommario):
During the 24-year Indonesian occupation of East Timor, thousands of people died, or were killed, in circumstances that did not allow the required death rituals to be performed. Since the nation’s independence, families and communities have invested considerable time, effort and resources in fulfilling their obligations to the dead. These obligations are imbued with urgency because the dead are ascribed agency and can play a benevolent or malevolent role in the lives of the living. These grassroots initiatives run, sometimes critically, in parallel with official programs that seek to transform particular dead bodies into public symbols of heroism, sacrifice and nationhood. The Dead as Ancestors, Martyrs, and Heroes in Timor-Leste focuses on the dynamic interplay between the potent presence of the dead in everyday life and their symbolic usefulness to the state. It underlines how the dead shape relationships amongst families, communities and the nation-state, and open an important window into — are in fact pivotal to — processes of state and nation formation.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The paper centers around the methodological question of whether “open texts” could be viewed as representing an image of extra-textual reality at a certain point in time. Assuming a positive answer to the question, it then proceeds to investigate, as a case study, the role of three women in the Alexander Romance, namely that of Olympias, Rodogoune and Candace. Curiously enough, the representation of Olympias in the work is in stark contrast with her depiction in historiographical sources (e.g. Plutarch, Arrian, Diodorus, Justin), as well as with the representation of the other two female characters of the Romance. One way to interpret this incongruity is to attribute it to a narrative technique aiming to present Alexander as a completely independent heroic character, without human weaknesses. On the other hand, the depiction of women in the Romance can be related to the assumed author’s social standing and stereotypes, and probably reflects quite faithfully the reality of the majority of women of the period.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter analyzes Jane Austen's six novels, arguing that each is a chronicle of how a heroine learns to think strategically. For example, in Northanger Abbey, Catherine Morland must learn to make her own independent choices in a sequence of increasingly important situations, and in Emma, Emma Woodhouse learns that pride in one's strategic skills can be just another form of cluelessness. In Pride and Prejudice, people's strategic abilities develop the least. Sense and Sensibility explores through the sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood how strategic thinking requires both thoughtful decision-making and fanciful speculation. The chapter also examines Persuasion and Mansfield Park. In all six novels, Austen theorizes how people, growing from childhood into adult independence, learn strategic thinking.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Drawing on queer and feminist critiques of prescriptive forms of human flourishing, this chapter analyzes films by Greta Gerwig, Dee Rees, and Desirée Akhavan about young female selves at odds with social expectations. Women directors of independent films in the United States are increasing in numbers and earning wider recognition as mainstream Hollywood is scrutinized for its lack of diverse stories and storytellers. But their careers are often limited by a narrative that favors “coming of age,” both as subject matter of their films and as a script for their own emergence. This chapter shows how the thwarted heroine of Ladybird and the persecuted queer protagonists of Pariah and The Miseducation of Cameron Post engage and complicate developmental narratives of happiness and adjustment. It extends that reading to the filmmakers’ own professional strategies.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter discusses a controversial icon of women in Tunisia, Selma Baccar, Tunisia’s first lady of filmmaking, an instigator and a fiercely independent woman still celebrated for her films and politics. Her first film Fatma 75 (1975) carried an intricately political statement of feminist defiance. The film looks at the time of independence and the subsequent struggle for women to gain their rights under the first president, Habib Bourguiba. Tunisia was a land of fictions, and even though Baccar roots her films in the reality of everyday life, most of them are essay films, due to restrictions put on the filmmaker by the Tunisian censor. Baccar, an intellectual artist, identifies strongly with her heroine and places her in a detailed historical context in order to analyse and critique Tunisian attitudes. She looks at past revolutions and women’s issues and in doing so, has served as women’s national memory. Her importance as documenter of the past has become central to 2011’s so-called ‘Jasmine Revolution’, as she now sits on the Assemblée constituante (Constitution Assembly) composed of elected members who are making an attempt at re-writing the Tunisian constitution.

Abstract (sommario):
The ongoing interest in Jane Eyre and its various adaptations, appropriations, mash-ups and sequels are indicative of the fact that the story and the main character have loosened themselves from literary forms and have become transmedia phenomena. Taking into consideration the independent web series The Autobiography of Jane Eyre, and the media discussion it generated among online communities, this chapter argues that in contrast to popular screen adaptations of the novel, the web series disentangles the heroine from the romantic plot and re-positions her within a network of relationships that encourage her growth. In this way, the series bypasses gender critiques levelled at Charlotte Brontë’s text and the majority of its mainstream adaptations. The web series’ media format and exploration of authorship enables its viewers to treat it both as an adaptation and a fictional vlog, highlighting the complex ways in which this classic of Victorian literature continues to matter today.

Abstract (sommario):
Uzbekistan's journey toward independence prompted a profound reevaluation of its social, political, and spiritual landscape. This era witnessed a redefinition of literary concepts and criteria, leading to a more precise portrayal of history in literary works. Notably, these changes also influenced the storytelling genre, catalyzing its evolution. During this transformation, themes of freedom, national liberation, resistance against colonialism, and unwavering faith emerged as central narratives, previously considered too risky to explore in Uzbek literature. Instead, they became emblematic of national heroism. Understanding history became synonymous with self-awareness, with “Baburnama” by Babur, the founder of the Babur dynasty, serving as a faithful historical account. Inspired by “Boburnoma” Uzbek writers crafted unique narratives that continue to captivate readers. This study explores Uzbek historical narratives, drawing from the rich records within “Boburnoma”.

Abstract (sommario):
The most relevant and useful for today's Russia and its historical heritage is, first of all, the tradition of the organic unity of our peoples, which was developed and postponed in the course of our history as a result of everyday exercises in justice, mutual respect and harmony. Despite the fact that every Russian people has its own traditions, customs, languages, and heroic past – together they make up a common heritage. To revive it, to always remember it – and not lose sight of it – is the urgent task of time. We must believe that the troubled times, poverty and disenfranchisement of ordinary people-workers, disrespect for the moral and legal norms of human society are a temporary phenomenon. Its elimination consists in a good, comprehensive preparation of every young person entering an independent life. Our research has confirmed the assumption that in the conditions of today's acute ideological struggle for the minds and hearts of young people, it is necessary to turn to the her

Abstract (sommario):
This paper discusses the vocational roles constructed by Najib Razak, the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia for himself, the government, and the relational identities for the people and others in nine Supply Bills (2010 – 2018). I have modelled this study on Charteris-Black’s Critical Metaphor Analysis (CMA) and Sack’s Membership Categorisation Analysis (MCA) as frameworks. The findings indicate that Najib Razak and the government played a role as medical doctor while the people and others have been conceptualised as patients and pre-term babies, experiencing a global economic downturn, an Asian Financial Crisis, poverty, and bribery. The people and others as patients must depend on the government for health and recovery. This experience emphasises the independent, heroic role enacted by the government, and the weak, subjugated role expected of the people and others. Through these metaphors, the people were reminded of the fact that, without the government to heal the people, the country cannot develop its metaphorical health. As such, the use of metaphors in the Supply Bills serves predicative, empathetic, ideological, and mythical purposes.

Abstract (sommario):
1.Objective: Dual diagnosis patients perpetrate crime more often than healthy individuals and is of great importance for forensic mental health services. However, in dual diagnosis patients, very little is known about factors explaining criminal behavior. This work aims to summarize the epidemiological and clinical approach of dual diagnosis patients, focusing on the Iberian Peninsula scope. Aditionaly, it aims to analyse the state of the art regarding associations between demographic and clinical factors and perpetration of crime in dual disorder patients. 2. Method: A non-systematic review of the literature is presented. Bibliographic selection was carried out through keyword research in MEDLINE and Google Scholar. 3. Results and conclusions: Perpetration of violence was independently associated with younger age, severity of alcohol use problems, lifetime trauma exposure, and higher manic symptom scores. The three drugs most commonly associated with the drugs–crime connection are heroin, crack and cocaine. A study conducted in penitentiary centers of the Interior in Spain found a high percentage of dual pathology (81.4%) In the portuguese largest security ward, in Coimbra, 40.5% of the sample had dual diagnosis disorders. Forensic units must take an integrated approach to addressing substance-use disorders. It is needed to consider not only the complexities of the substance misuse and the mental disorder, but also the offending behaviour that brought them into the forensic services. Also, social skills can effectively be improved in dual diagnosis patients. Further research is required to identify additional risk factors, such as individual substances of abuse, and establish a causal model leading to criminal perpetration.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: Elderly people face health problems associated with reduced health and increased disability. Dependent elderly on caregivers who cause a burden affecting the quality of life of caregivers. The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between the burden and quality of life among dependent elderly caregivers. Subjects and Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out in Pakuncen Village, Yogyakarta. The study subjects were 30 informal caregivers who cared for their family member aged ≥ 60 years with moderate dependence. Instruments used to screen dependent elderly included Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and Instrument Activities of Daily Living (IADL) to measure level of independence, MMSE and AD-8 to assess cognitive function of elderly. Caregivers aged ≥ 60 years underwent MMSE and those with scores <24 was excluded. Caregivers’ burden ware measured using The Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) and Caregiver Reaction Assessment (CRA). Measurements of quality of life among caregivers was conducted by WHOQOL-BREF. Data were analyzed using Spearman-rank correlation. Results: Out of 30 caregivers, 24 were female and 6 were male with an average age of 49 years. Most respondents had light to moderate burden (Mean= 34.27; SD=18.94). Caregivers’ quality of life were low (<60) in psychological (Mean= 58.17; SD= 12.31), social relation (Mean= 59.77; SD= 9.04), and the environment domains (Mean= 51.90; SD= 10.00). Caregivers’ quality of life was high (≥60) in physical health domain (Mean= 63.30; SD=12.83). There were negative correlations between caregiver burden (ZBI and CRA) and the quality life of caregivers (WHOQOL-BREF). Conclusion: In Yogyakarta, the burden of caregivers (ZBI and CRA) and the quality of caregivers’ lives (WHOQOL-BREF) are negatively correlated. Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this research was to examine fifth-grade students’ reactions to a fairy tale which contains a non-normative gender characterization, entitled Cinderella Liberator by Rebecca Solnit. The research is based on a whole series of similar qualitative research studies that have been conducted in different parts of the world since 1980s. The research was inspired by the feminist movement, especially Marcia Lieberman, who drew attention to classical fairy tales as a very important factor in preserving the normative gender key (Lieberman 1972). As a result, pure feminist fairy tales have been written, stories in which independent and stroThe researchers have used these stories to test whether children accept non-normative gender discourse. Their studies have shown that resistance to alternatives increases with children’s age, that boys are more conservative while girls are more open to new ideas. Furthermore, the studies have shown that even a non-sexist and non-normative school curriculum can not encourage children to use gender equality discourse. The deconstruction of classical stories was highlighted as a very important factor. In order to investigate how ten-year-olds in Montenegro react to an alternative story, we conducted a survey with a total of 52 students from two urban schools. The students’ task was to read the story at home, and they were given a printed illustrated version of the text along with research questions. Having read the story, the students participated in focus group discussions. They were divided into six focus groups: two focus groups were made of girls, two other were made of boys, and the remaining two groups were mixed. Focus group interviews took approximately one hour, and the main goal of the interview was to determine how students reacted to atypical gender roles in the fairy tale they had read. The results of the research were grouped into three themes: whether children preferred the classic story or the new one; children’s attitude towards the relationship of the protagonist and the antagonist in both stories; children’s attitude towards the ending of the story. More than half of the respondents (32 students) pointed out that they preferred the new version because it differed from classic fairy tales, had more events and it was more interesting. Twenty students (15 male and 5 female) remained absolutely committed to the classic version of the text. The relationship between the protagonist and the antagonists was correctly understood by the students – there are no negative characters in the new version and all the characters eventually become friends. Most of the students liked the end of the story, but some of them thought that the story should have had a typical fairy tale happy ending. It can be concluded that in order to provide gender equality discourse among students it is necessary: to include alternative stories in the curriculum, to apply methods based on literary reception theory and to continuously train teachers to deconstruct classical texts and encourage children to critically evaluate gender equality discourse.ng heroines occurred (Zipes 1986).
