Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: In 2014, only 48% of S&P companies scored high-performance band B ratings and above in their Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) reports to attract the interest of institutional investors holding U.S. $92 trillion plus assets under management. This multiple case study explored the business leaders’ strategic decisions to improve the performance band ratings in the companies’ CDP reports. The conceptual framework for this research was stakeholder theory, which suggests that businesses should incorporate the interest of institutional investors to minimize the climate-related risks that could affect their investment decisions. The target population was business leaders from S&P 500 companies in the eastern United States who have experience in making strategic decisions to improve performance band ratings in the CDP reports. Data collection included semistructured face-to-face interviews with 4 business leaders and an exploration of company archival documents related to carbon management. Using Yin’s data analysis method 5 themes emerged: governance, risk management, target and initiatives, measurement and verification, and transparency and disclosure. These themes highlighted companies’ governing strategies for better carbon management, which are essential in achieving better performance band ratings in the CDP reports to attract the interest of intuitional investors. Better carbon management by S&P 500 companies will facilitate a positive social change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions that are detrimental to human health and well-being of its stakeholders.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Emergence of new economic entities, through either integration or disintegration, always creates system inefficiencies resulting in temporary economic setbacks. At the macroeconomic level, this brings about slowdown in economic growth and delayed catching up with more advanced economies. In Europe, the turn of the century brought along political and economic disintegration, on one hand, and economic integration, on the other. Demise of planned economies across Eastern Europe caused serious economic turmoil due to market fragmentation. Meanwhile, creation of new economic architecture in the European Union (EU) has created additional challenges of economic restructuring. Therefore, achieving sustainable economic growth and high income has become the ultimate economic policy objective. Equity investment in form of foreign direct investment (FDI) has proven to be the right choice, because influx of fresh capital and know-how enabled strong economic growth and restructuring through increasing labor productivity and economic efficiency. Stronger competitive pressure through FDI contributed to dynamic restructuring, resembling in increasing exports and stronger integration into global economy. Yet, growth rates across countries were not always proportional to the volume of inward FDI, which indicates a certain level of underperformance for some countries. The aim of the paper is to closer investigate the FDI-growth nexus by differentiating between two types of FDI – mergers and acquisition (M&A) and greenfield investment. Thus, the analysis will take account of the characteristics of the FDI host economy, and those of the investing company, because we find it reasonable to assume that different forms of FDI incorporate different business dynamics and the time horizon of the investor’s expectations. In order to find out the effects of different forms of FDI on economic growth we apply panel data analysis with fixed effects and Prais-Winsten estimator on the sample of European reform countries whereby FDI, M&A and greenfield investment are considered the key variables. Analysis also includes a set of control variables, which combine standard neoclassical growth variables. Results indicate that, with reference to the level of innovativeness, different types of FDI indeed produce different effects on host countries’ economic growth.

Abstract (sommario):
Recently developed attenuation models are incorporated into standard one-dimensional (1-D) ground motion prediction equations (GMPEs), effectively making them two-dimensional (2-D) and eliminating the need to create different GMPEs for an increasing number of sub-regions. The model is tested against a data set of over 10,000 recordings from 81 earthquakes in North America. The use of attenuation models in GMPEs improves our ability to fit observed ground motions and should be incorporated into future national hazard maps. The improvement is most significant at higher frequencies and longer distances which have a greater number of wave cycles. This has implications for the rare high-magnitude earthquakes, which produce potentially damaging ground motions over wide areas, and drive the seismic hazards. Because the attenuation models can be created using weak ground motions, they could be developed for regions of low seismicity where empirical recordings of ground motions are uncommon and do not span the full range of magnitudes and distances.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper shows the process for optimization of structural design to fatigue bending aluminum wheels in a company located in the city of Manizales, Colombia. The process was conducted relating the finite element analysis with fatigue bending tests results, demonstrating that the design of aluminum wheels can be optimized by reducing the development time of each model, getting lighter wheels, which means savings cost of development and manufacturing of the product with consequent improvements in efficiency and performance of vehicles. Furthermore, if the simulation is performed early in the product development process, designs can be optimized prior to manufacture and testing of physical prototypes. The work presented shows how the finite element analysis has successfully incorporated as part of the wheels normal design process in the company, with consequent benefits in terms of reliability and productivity.

Abstract (sommario):
After the discovery of oil in Masjed-Soleyman by employees of the D'Arcy Concession in 1908, the Anglo Persian Oil Company (APOC) was incorporated in London. The oil cities of Abadan, Masjed-Soleyman, and at least seven other sister towns designed and constructed by the APOC in the first quarter of the twentieth century in Khuzestan, were the first modern and industrial towns in Iran and the Middle East. This essay studies Abadan and Masjed-Soleyman – company towns with, on the one hand, a modern and authoritarian structure and organization, and on the other hand, thanks to the heterogeneity and energy of their population, as well as the forbidding scale the cities had reached despite the company's wishes, a conditional modernity. The result of these contradictions were cities and urban cultures that were energetic and dynamic, but also eclectic and hybrid.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract An integrated incineration unit was developed to handle tobacco waste within a processing plant in the Eastern Company, Egypt. In addition to the unit, subsequent utilization of the heat content of combustion gases was investigated. The incinerator design was tailored around the current process of solid waste combustion within the tobacco processing plants of the Eastern Company in 6th October City, Egypt. A feeding rate of 1 ton/hr of solid waste consisted of 50% mass of tobacco, 20% paper, and cartons, 20% wooden boxes, and 10% plastics. The volume occupied by the remaining ash after the incineration process would not exceed 5% of the feedstock. The overall material and energy balances were calculated based on a 25490 kg/hr combustion gas discharge with a heat content of 20.09 Gj/hr. Energy from flue gases would be utilized to generate saturated steam or produce hot water. The design included a fired-tube boiler capable of generating 7 ton/hr saturated steam at 185 °C and 10 bar. The temperature of the exhaust effluent combustion gases vented into the atmosphere had to stand at 200 °C to avoid penalties. Moreover, this effluent temperature is considered to be effective and efficient utilization of the heat content in the waste.

Policyholders encounter difficulties in asserting their rights when their life insurance companyis in financial straits and served with bankruptcy petition. Life insurance company and regulator have tore-regulate in detail every possible provision contained in a life insurance and ensure that each clausehas been incorporated in the policy, to protect policyholder. The society must be educated to the rightsand responsibility of the policyholder and the insurer, including the protection accorded to policyholders when the life insurance company is on the edge of financial distress or bankruptcy.

Abstract (sommario):
The Shuaiba Industrial Area (SIA) is located about 50 km south of Kuwait City. It accommodates most of the large-scale industries in Kuwait. The total area of the SIA (both eastern and western sectors) is about 22.98 million m2. Fifteen plants are located in the eastern sector and 23 in the western sector, including two petrochemical companies, three refineries, two power plants, a melamine company, an industrial gas corporation, a paper products company and, two steam electricity generating stations, in addition to several other industries. Therefore, only 30 percent of the land in the SIA's eastern sector and 70 percent of land in the SIA's western sector is available for future expansion. Presently, industries in the SIA generate approximately 204,000 t of solid waste. With future development in the industries in the SIA, the estimated quantities will reach 240,000 t. The Shuaiba Area Authority (SAA), a governmental regulatory body responsible for planning and development in the SIA, has recognized the problem of solid waste and has developed an industrial waste minimization program. This program would help to reduce the quantity of waste generated within the SIA and thereby reduce the cost of waste management. This paper presents a description of the waste minimization program and how it is to be implemented by major petroleum companies. The protocols employed in the waste minimization program are detailed.

Abstract In the present study, we examine the question of whether the cultural characteristics of the country of the parent company are related to the posting practices of the parent company. According to our hypothesis, the management culture of the sending (parent) company influences the employment of foreign expats in local subsidiaries. In this research we use interviews and multivariate statistical analysis of survey data from five CEE countries, an important but relatively less examined region for global HR mobility. We found a significant relationship between cultural differences and expatriate assignment practices of MNCs. However, based on the strength of the relationship, we can conclude that in addition to management culture, other influencing factors typically influence posting decisions. Our results support Hofstede’s suggestion about the cultural dependence of management methods from a specific, management of expatriates, perspective.

Abstract The article analyzes the requirements for employee resourcing of human recourses management in the countries of Western, Central and Eastern Europe and the USA. It is found that the set of documents which create the regulatory, methodological and legal support for the functioning of human resources management as a system is incorporated into the regulatory framework of human resources management. In turn, the regulatory and methodological support of the human resources management system is a set of organizational, organizational and methodological, organizational and managerial, technical, regulatory and technical, technical and economic and economic documents, as well as reference documents, which establish norms, rules, requirements, characteristics, methods and other data used in organizing workplace and human resources management and are approved in due course by the competent authority or the leadership of the company. The employee resourcing of the human resources management system is viewed as the necessary quantitative and qualitative composition of human resources employees in the company. It is specified that considerable attention should be paid to the legal support of the human resources management system, that is, the use of means and forms of legal influence on the bodies and objects of human resources management to achieve the effective functioning of the company. It is clarified that the models of social partnership in different countries differ in the organizational mechanism, norms and rules on the regulation of social and employment relations, the level of the procedure centralization and the participation of the state in social dialogue. It is concluded that the main objectives of the legal support for the human resources management system include the legal regulation of business relations which are formed between employers and employees, the protection of the rights and legitimate interests of employees arising from employment relations.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper identifies the concern factors of private investors associated with Public-Private Partnership (PPP) transportation projects in Vietnam. The concern factors are incorporated into four main groups: (1) company profile; (2) finance; (3) opportunities; and (4) risk perceptions. The paper examines the different perceptions by the public and private sectors about these concern factors adopted by experienced professionals related to PPP transportation projects. Based on a questionnaire survey in Vietnam, the most concern factors of private investors are their own capacity, demand issues, legal and political risks, long-term income, and financial sources issues of the PPP project. Moreover, five factors that represent the significant differences between the private and public sectors including political risks, enhancement of company’s strength in its industry, construction risks, demand issues, and financial viability of the company are also discovered. Addressing the different perceptions is indispensable to ensure the public sector can establish necessary policies that appeal to both domestic and foreign private investors. The paper at the same time hopes to provide some of lessons for the private sector.

This paper describes the current Master Scheduling approach used at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego. Master schedules at NASSCO focus on key interim products involved in ship construction: units, blocks, (on-board) zones, and tests. Network scheduling algorithms (that is, Critical Path) are used. Each interim product has an associated subnet. Categorization by type is used to simplify the task of developing and maintaining activity lists, dependencies (predecessor/successor relationships) and durations for the thousands of activities. Manual level-loading of critical resources is incorporated into and supported by the overall scheduling process. The paper includes some discussion of problems encountered in the implementation of this scheduling approach.

Abstract (sommario):
Highways are important in the growth of the economy of the nation. Pavement distributes and reduces the loads to the subgrade so as not to destruct the pavement foundation and subgrade. Thermal stresses are more vulnerable and to be included as the ability to contract and expand concrete is very less. The roads provide vehicle access to various points in all weather conditions and provide road users with a clean, smooth, and comfortable ride without unnecessary delay or excessive wear and tear. Since the UP eastern region faces tremendous temperature differences, load variations, and moisture conditions. This paper puts an attempt to identify the optimum thickness of the rigid pavement to sustain these extreme temperature variations, high humidity, and various load configurations. In this paper the various configurations of the loads are taken from the IRC 6: 2016 along with the various moisture and temperature data are taken from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) ministry of Earth and Science government of India. The paper gives a brief idea of pavement thickness selection. This paper utilizes Finite Element Method (FEM) based Software’s KENPAVE along with ANSYS 12.1 for a better understanding of the critical stress and its positions where the pavement needs attention in the design. All these varying conditions are incorporated in these software’s and the results obtained were in the form of figures, graphs, and deflected shapes. Parametric variation in the pavement section (i.e. variation in thickness of PQC, DLC layer, and in Modulus of Elasticity), variation in poisons ratio and temperature by using these results and doing cost analysis the optimum pavement thickness was obtained.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In recent years the effectiveness and reliability of “dilute and disperse” type landfills has been the subject of much debate. Much research has been reported which supports the view that intergranular unsaturated zones beneath sites can provide a high degree of aquifer protection, although detailed and continuing monitoring of such zones has been extremely rare. Aspinwall and Company are carrying out a major research project on behalf of the UK Department of the Environment at a landfill site in Southern England, which is operated by ARC South Eastern. The design of this landfill was produced by Aspinwall and Company, and is innovative in that it has incorporated an engineered, semi-permeable, attenuation blanket, using locally-available calcareous sands and silt, emplaced to a minimum height of 6 m above the water table. The site has a licence to deposit up to 1300 tonnes per day of domestic wastes derived from London. In early 1982 one portion of the quarry floor was selected for a programme of research, and over 100 instruments and sampling devices were installed before waste disposal began. A drilling programme during the summer of 1984 allowed further sampling, and the installation of more instruments within the wastes themselves, now about 2b to 30 m deep. This paper summarises and describes data obtained over the 3-year monitoring period to early 1985. The performance of the unsaturated zone is assessed, in terms of the attenuation of inorganic ions such as ammonia and chloride, and degradation of organic compounds such as fatty acids, which have occurred as leachate and gases have migrated from the wastes.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractZbąszynek (Neu Bentschen), a German border post, with accommodation for railway workers, customs officials, postmen and border guards, was established primarily between 1923 and 1930. It was built in the middle of the countryside, designed according to the garden city concept and provided with an urban technical infrastructure. In the years 1932 to 1945, the town had the status of a rural parish. The majority of the houses and civic buildings (railway station, school, town hall, Protestant church, Catholic church, inn) were designed by Wilhelm Beringer from the Deutsche Reichsbahn administration in Frankfurt (Oder). He incorporated neo-baroque and expressionist motifs. The monumental and expressionist water tower, designed by Bruno Möhring from Berlin, is also worth noting. The town comprised two parts. The eastern part contained housing for company workers and officials, a school at the main town square and an inn; the western part was intended – though the idea was short-lived – to comprise privately owned houses, both churches and the town hall. By design, the slaughterhouse, sewage treatment plant and cemetery were all placed on the periphery of the town. The two parts were, and still are divided by ul. Wojska Polskiego, Zbąszynek’s main street. Its southern end is the imposing pl. Dworcowy, the Station Square, taking the form of a cour d’honneur.

Abstract (sommario):
Inaccurate bus arrival time predictions are counterproductive to changing transport habits and promoting public transport use. This research sought to improve the bus passenger experience in terms of bus arrival time prediction by investigating various time series and regression-based techniques suitable for bus arrival time modeling. The models developed in the current study included: random walk with drift, multivariate linear regression, decision tree, artificial neural networks, and gene expression programming models. Historic automatic vehicle location and passenger flow data obtained for four bus routes spanning Auckland city, in both travel directions, were used as model inputs. Specifically, 10 independent variables were incorporated in the regression models, with distance between bus stops being the most significant predictor for bus travel time. Research results indicated that time series models outperformed regression techniques, with the time series artificial neural network being the most successful of the seven models developed. Moreover, the alternative models all performed significantly better than the prediction engine currently utilized by an Auckland bus company for arrival time prediction. However, these results require corroboration with manually collected field data, on account of the quality concerns afflicting the raw data reported by the transport company.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper presents an auto-ethnographic account of a personal socio-psychological ‘journey’ from work in a modern ‘progressive’ oil company in south-eastern England to the engineering industry in the Coventry district. The role of the association in industrial relations, in which the author was involved, is described in a series of vignettes. The paper presents detailed observations regarding the extant culture of that area and industrial relations in the companies represented by the Coventry and District Engineering Employers’ Association from the point of view of a quasi-independent but participant observer.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) is supposed to improve transparency by increasing the quality and the comparability of financial information. Qualitative financial information plays an important role in describing the position of a company and its financial performance, which are relevant to the investors in the decision-making process. At European level, the appearance of Regulation no.1606/2002 stimulated the implementation process by requiring to each listed company from European capital markets to prepare consolidated financial statements in accordance with IFRS for each fiscal year beginning with 1st January 2005. The main purpose of this research is to investigate the link between foreign direct investment (FDI) in 4 countries from Central and Eastern Europe and the IFRS adoption. The FDI inflows are a key factor in the economic development of a country due to their long term commitment in the business of the host country. In the present study, net inflows of FDI were analyzed in the period of 1990-2020 based on the data collected from the World Bank website. Even if we cannot draw a direct line between IFRS implementation and the increase of FDI, we cannot fail to notice that in the years when there have been changes in the legislation on convergence to IFRS there have been significant increases in the attracted FDI.

Abstract (sommario):
This article highlights the striking facts about rapid prototyping; a process that fabricates physical objects directly from computer-aided design sources. The use of rapid prototyping as a replacement for injection molding is still the overwhelming exception and may always be limited to a very narrow niche. Three-dimensional printing has also seen the introduction of materials that improve the durability and appearance of conceptual prototype parts. Z Corp. of Burlington is incorporating new pigments into its binders for its starch- and plaster-based materials. The pigments result in truer and brighter colors and replace the dyes that were previously incorporated into the liquid binders. The company has recently introduced a urethane infiltrant that increases part strength significantly and allows parts with delicate geometries to be.

Abstract (sommario):
The author presents “Existential Technology” as a new category of in(ter)ventions and as a new theoretical framework for understanding privacy and identity. His thesis is twofold: (1) The unprotected individual has lost ground to invasive surveillance technologies and complex global organizations that undermine the humanistic property of the individual; (2) A way for the individual to be free and collegially assertive in such a world is to be “bound to freedom” by an articulably external force. To that end, the author explores empowerment via self-demotion. He has founded a federally incorporated company and appointed himself to a low enough position to be bound to freedom within that company. His performances and in(ter)ventions over the last 30 years have led him to an understanding of such concepts as individual self-corporatization and submissivity reciprocity for the creation of a balance of bureaucracy.

Abstract (sommario):

The main aim of the article is to determine how the bankruptcy filing announcement of a stock listed company affects the market valuation of its competitors, depending on the sector characteristic. An event study was conducted on the example of returns to shares of companies comprised in the WIG index and operating in 9 sectors. It is indicated that the bankruptcy filing announcement is quickly (within one day) incorporated into the share prices of competitors of the announcing firm. It is confirmed that the direction of market reaction toward share prices of competitors is differentiated by the characteristics of the sector. Averaged results show that the competitive effect occurs in the sectors with a high level of concentration, while the contagion effect is noted in sectors with low concentration. Companies from sectors characterized by low leverage experience the competitive effect. No information transfer was found for a group of companies in sectors characterized by high leverage.

This paper develops one method to characterize nano dimension standards using Scanning White Light Interference Sensor (SWLIS) based on Nano Measurement Machine (NMM). The experimental results show the average value of SHS8-440 low step height standard is 44.15 nm and SHS8-100.0 high step height standard is 100.29 μm, with a standard deviation of 0.30 nm and 0.03 μm, respectively. Also, SWLIS is performed to measure and characterize step height standards, which cover most of the conventional step height standards produced by VLSI Standards Incorporated (VLSI). Additionally, atomic force microscope (AFM) is used as a beneficial supplement due to low lateral resolution of optical methods. The average value of TGZ1_PTB 1D grating from NT-MDT Company is 3000.2 nm with a standard deviation of 0.3 nm by AFM.

During 2017–2018, the National Seismic Hazard Model for the conterminous United States was updated as follows: (1) an updated seismicity catalog was incorporated, which includes new earthquakes that occurred from 2013 to 2017; (2) in the central and eastern United States (CEUS), new ground motion models were updated that incorporate updated median estimates, modified assessments of the associated epistemic uncertainties and aleatory variabilities, and new soil amplification factors; (3) in the western United States (WUS), amplified shaking estimates of long-period ground motions at sites overlying deep sedimentary basins in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Salt Lake City areas were incorporated; and (4) in the conterminous United States, seismic hazard is calculated for 22 periods (from 0.01 to 10 s) and 8 uniform VS30 maps (ranging from 1500 to 150 m/s). We also include a description of updated computer codes and modeling details. Results show increased ground shaking in many (but not all) locations across the CEUS (up to ~30%), as well as near the four urban areas overlying deep sedimentary basins in the WUS (up to ~50%). Due to population growth and these increased hazard estimates, more people live or work in areas of high or moderate seismic hazard than ever before, leading to higher risk of undesirable consequences from forecasted future ground shaking.

Abstract (sommario):
This article builds and evaluates a business sustainability model for a manufacturing industry in which indicators of sustainable development are incorporated. The construction and analysis of the model is based on the system dynamics methodology. This methodology begins with the characterization of business sustainability and its indicators, models and applied methodologies are then reviewed, the production process of the analyzed company described, and the model is finally elaborated integrating the environmental, economic and social dimensions. The simulations of the model showed that the inventory of finished products accumulates over time and that the incorporation of energy saving technology is one that has a more effective impact on consumption, and the proportion of waste generated grows as the production order’s size increases. Finally, it is concluded that the designed model is useful for the evaluation of strategies and the definition of sustainability actions.

Sediment samples from the Săsar River and its main tributaries were analyzed for their potentially toxic elements at the site of the Romplumb metallurgical company and near the well-known Pb-Zn-Cu epithermal deposit of Baia Sprie located in the Neogene volcanic chain of the Eastern Carpathians, Romania. The average metal concentrations arranged in order of decreasing abundance are as follows (mg·kg−1): Mn (4098) > Zn (2093) > Pb (918) > Cu (489) > As (160) > Cr (37.51) > Ni (30.25) > Co (28.13) > Cd (9.72) > Hg (1.81). Several pollution indices were successfully used to assess the degree of contamination and ecological risk. The majority of sampling sites indicate high degrees of pollution, with two major hotspots identified. There are further sources, such as the Șuior (Pb-Zn-Au) and Săsar (Au-Ag) epithermal deposits, Cuprom company, and Bozânta tailing ponds, identified as contaminants. The Baia Mare mining district is causing a serious threat to the aquatic systems in the region, and it can be taken as a reference area for the human impact derived from the mining of mineral deposits of Au-Ag-Cu-Pb-Zn. It is imperative to reduce ecological risks and thereby protect the population living within this abandoned mining area.

Abstract (sommario):
Modifying a simple-cycle gas turbine to include heat exchangers can improve its thermal efficiency significantly (as much as 20 percent). Advanced regenerative and intercooled regenerative gas turbines for marine application have recently been the subject of numerous studies, most of which have shown that lower fuel consumption can be achieved by adding heat exchangers to existing simple-cycle gas turbines. Additional improvements in thermal efficiency are available by increasing the efficiency of the turbomachinery itself, particularly that of the gas turbine’s air compressor. Studies by Caterpillar Tractor Company and Solar Turbines Incorporated on a recuperated, variable-geometry gas turbine indicate an additional 8 to 10 percent improvement in thermal efficiency is possible when an improved higher efficiency compressor is included in the gas turbine modification. During these studies a novel compressor, the Axi-Fuge, was devised. This paper discusses the Axi-Fuge concept, its origin, design criteria and approach, and some test results.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract. Fire insurance maps produced by the American firm the Sanborn Map Company have long served as cartographic guides to understanding the history of urban America. Primarily used by cultural and historical geographers, historians, historic preservationists, and environmental consultants; historians of cartography have little explored the history of this company. While this scholarship has addressed various facets of Sanborn’s history (Ristow, 1968), no scholarly piece has explored the lived experience of being a Sanborn surveyor. This lack of scholarship comes not from any significant oversight but rather from the fact that the contributions of most Sanborn surveyors were anonymous and little recorded on the maps themselves. Moreover, the company itself has done little to save its own history, thus little is known of their individual stories and experiences. The exception to this is perhaps the most famous Sanborn surveyor of all: Daniel Carter Beard.

Over the course of his nine-decade life, Daniel Carter Beard held several prominent positions including the co-founder of the Boy Scouts of America and the lead illustrator for many of Mark Twain’s novels. However, he got his start as a surveyor for the Sanborn Map Company in the 1870s, just a few years after its founding. His papers, housed at the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, includes a variety of ephemera from his time with the Sanborn Map Company.

Trained in civil engineering, Beard got his start as a surveyor for the Cincinnati (Ohio) Office of Platting Commission, creating the first official plat map for the city. He was hired by Sanborn in 1874 and served as a surveyor until 1878, traveling extensively over the eastern half of the United States, parlaying his skills into creating fire insurance maps for Sanborn. Thus, this paper speaks to two main themes. The first theme traces the route of Beard during his early years with the company across the eastern half of the United States, documenting both the places he visited and the challenges he faced as a Sanborn surveyor. The second theme, interwoven through the paper, is an analysis of the innerworkings of Sanborn’s administrative structure and its relationship with the larger fire insurance market during the 1870s. Altogether, these documents present unique insight into the organization of the Sanborn Map Company and how it produced its maps during the second-half of the 19th century.

Abstract (sommario):
The best way to judge the quality of a new company law is to test it against real-life problems. This article attempts to do that by placing the concept of control in the center of its observations, posing related questions, and offering food for thought for the drafters of company laws. The concept of control in the context of corporations with highly dispersed shareholders holding atomized stakes (‘quasi-public corporations’) was first dissected by Adolf A. Berle (lawyer) and Gardiner C. Means (economist) in their 1932 classic The Modern Corporation and Private Property. Their conceptualization and classification of control serves as the basis for the analysis herein, even though interest in control has lately been overshadowed by novel schools of thought based on agency theory and the like. With that in mind, the central thesis of this article is that control is the ultimate ‘invisible hand’ of company law because it is unparalleled in importance, omnipresent, and – due to its multifaceted nature – inherently difficult to grasp, especially insofar as its precise essence or its manifestation in real life circumstances is concerned. Secondly, using examples from recent cases from Central and Eastern Europe (‘CEE’), this article aims to show that the crucially important concept of control is still not fully understood. Unfortunately, but perhaps unsurprisingly, empirical evidence readily proves that simple formulas for “taming” control do not exist. Instead, eternal vigilance, as well as regular re-evaluation of governance and oversight solutions, is needed not just by the boards and corporate officers in charge of oversight, but also by shareholders if control of corporate officers is at stake. Thirdly, the article demonstrates that control plays a similarly important role for small and mid-sized businesses (‘SMEs’) countering a burning set of problems that SMEs are doomed to face at some point in their existence: the issues corollary to the inter-generational transfer of the control and ownership of successfully operating companies. This topic is tackled through the prism of the milestone case of Galler v. Galler from Illinois, United States (US), which gave the green light to a peculiar but flexible set of solutions to these governance-related issues. I argue that the Galler formula, or at least parts of it, could be adapted elsewhere to serve similar ends. As the case studies offered in this article will demonstrate, these are living problems, especially insofar as they concern jurisdictions which are still yet to settle on wholly-adequate solutions, such as the post-socialist states of Central and Eastern Europe, China, and other fledgling legal systems across the globe.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Industry 4.0 is a rapidly evolving concept that has received attention in recent years and aims to achieve a higher and more efficient production rate through automation. Because its implementation involves the improvement of business processes, this concept is inextricably linked to Business Process Management. Business Process Modeling is a Business Process Management tool that can be used to describe an organization's processes in order to elaborate and improve them. As a result, models are widely used for the better comprehension of processes and as a first step in introducing new concepts, such as Industry 4.0, into an organization. Hence, a comprehensive framework of a modeling architecture is required for an organization that desires a holistic transmission to new concepts based on its needs, operations, and structure. In this paper, a holistic enterprise architecture, along with an instance of it, which is proposed in a company that manages the high and medium-pressure natural gas network is presented, encompassing the appropriate models for the recording and detailed presentation of business processes and how Industry 4.0 principles and applications could be incorporated to them. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Fabric production companies place great emphasis on quality control, recognizing its crucial role in their operations. Failure to identify defects in fabrics exposes these companies to the risk of financial losses and damage to their reputation due to the sale of flawed products. Typically, traditional inspection systems exhibit an accuracy range of 60-75%. This paper proposes a solution to reduce costs by introducing a fast and automated defect detection system, complemented by human operator decision-making. The system employs a specialized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for defect detection. The training process involved the utilization of over 50 defect types to achieve a well-generalized system. Moreover, given that undetected defects (False Negatives - FNs) are more costly to the company than erroneously classifying a non-defective fabric as defective (false positives), FN reduction methods were incorporated into the proposed system. During testing, the automatic mode of the system achieved an average accuracy of 75%.

The authors sought to determine whether energy companies disclosed risks in non-financial annual reports in 2011–2020 (e.g., CSR, integrated, and board activity reports), and whether one can assess threats, including business activity risks and SD, based on these reports. We assessed the reports of all large Polish energy companies on a three- and five-degree scale to develop a model for risk information disclosures. We have three key empirical findings. Only half the analysed companies disclose annual financial data, threats, and risks. Less than half have implemented and operate enterprise risk management systems. The current ‘soft’ regulatory solutions give energy companies appreciable risk disclosure options, which often is counterproductive. We suggest developing a single integrated European Union (EU) regulation (e.g., directives, standards, or official principles) for non-financial risk disclosures. Our model classifies Polish energy company risks to business activity operations and risk management systems. Other sectors can use this universal model. Our results constitute progress in identifying company risks and may encourage continuing studies of other energy companies, especially in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), which should be intensively developed. Research should also occur in other strategic sectors.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to develop new soft contact lens (SCL) materials which would, after recommended and existing machining processes, improve surface roughness. Nanomaterials (fullerene, fullerol and methformin hydroxylate fullerene) were incorporated into commercial material for SCL (SL38) based on PHEMA, which were derived by the technology in the production lab of the company Soleko (Milan, Italy). Nanophotonic SCLs (SL38-A, SL38-B, SL38-C, respectively) were produced in the company Optix (Belgrade, Serbia) from the obtained materials. For the surface characterization of SCLs, AFM analysis and lacunarity method were performed. The results showed that for the SL38-B average roughness value is lower than those of SL38-A and SL38. The topography parameters of SL38-C were between the parameters of SL38-A and SL38-B. Lacunarity analysis of AFM images confirmed that SCLs surface state should belong to either group of adequate (slanted p-diagram) or inadequate (contorted p-diagram) roughness concerning tear film stability. Nanophotonic SCL SL38-C exibits more acceptable performance considering SCL surface functional behavior as compared to other SCLs. The positive result of incorporating nanomaterials into basic material for SCL is better quality of the nanophotonic SCLs surfaces. On the bases of these experiments, the assumption that incorporation of fullerene derivate will not increase surface roughness parameters is confirmed.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper aims to propose a decision tool that helps estimate the risk probability in the petroleum sector in Iraq, which has many benefits for identifying the most important factor. This model was developed by using the relative importance index (RII) method incorporated into fuzzy Logic. An extensive literature review was conducted, and a questionnaire was distributed to the private and government sectors to scan all possible risks in the petroleum sector. As a result, forty–eight risks in the petroleum sector were identified and categorized into four groups: operational risks, financial and administrative risks, economic and political risks, and potential risks. Over 170 questionnaire forms have been distributed to engineers, managers, experts, and technicians, and 153 forms have been adopted for the analysis. The SPSS software was used to execute the statistical analysis concerning statical mean and relative important index. Also, the questionnaire results were analyzed using the relative importance index. The ranking of the groups and factors was demonstrated according to their level of effect on risk. Finally, a fuzzy assessment model was constructed and tested being appropriate to identify the probability of risk in the Iraqi petroleum sector to assess and estimate risk. Oil exploration company, one of the associations of the ministry of oil in Iraq, has been taken as a case study of this research to determine the risks and validate the model. This paper will seek the best solution to eliminate or minimized risks in the Iraqi patrolmen sector, especially at the Iraq oil exploration company as it has been taken as a case study. Three types of risk solutions were tested and optimized and those solutions are the avoid, the mitigate, and the transfer of the risks. The ANP mothed was used to determine the priority or the effectiveness of each type of solution to find the best alternative option for each risk factor. The result shows that the best way to deal with oil and gas risks in the Iraq petroleum sector is to avoid these risks. Because the solutions belonging to this group have an effective value of 65.4 %. The other two groups of mitigation and transfer have less effectiveness of 19.8 % and 14.8 % respectively. Moreover, the local and global priorities of the most important risk factor are also determined to validate and optimized the result. Finally, a list of alternative solutions recommended by the experts has been illustrated.

Abstract (sommario):
This article focuses on trade unions as important stakeholders in the system of labour relations in the countries of Central East and Southeast Europe, namely Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia – now North Macedonia, Albania and Kosovo. Our hypothesis is that the development of trade unions in these regions, with their traditional company-centred organisation (syndicalism), is embedded in a discrete Central Eastern and South Eastern European type of neo-liberal economy. The cleavage of the EU in the East and West goes far beyond labour relations and the development of trade unions and determines other societal fields as well. This empirical evidence comes from a multi-level evaluation of a prolonged consultancy project (1998–2013) involving German, Dutch, European and global trade unions and political foundations and aimed at modernising selected trade unions in the CEE and SEE countries. Beyond the necessary analysis of documents, 92 expert interviews with trade unionists, representatives of employers’ associations and politicians were carried out between 2009 and 2013. The results were presented and discussed in five regional conferences involving different country groupings; these discussions influenced the final results by way of a reflexive process. In summary, because of the faltering process of modernising trade unions in these regions, the trade unions are endangered and may sink into insignificance.

Abstract (sommario):
Six sigma is understood as a technique for the continuous improvement in process quality; however, it has been rarely scientifically analysed in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs representthe vast majority of enterprises throughout economies and contribute to automotive supply chains in various tier ranks. As SMEs are known to lack resources and skills while focusing on short-term benefits rather than on long-term gradual improvements, the aim of of this paper is to analyse the perception of six sigma process capabilities in automotive supply chains assuming differences in company size, supply chain rank and six sigma duration. This was tested with Fisher’s exact test. Companies with less than 1000 employees, subsuppliers and companies with a six sigma implementation in the last 3 years struggled to meet six sigma principles, suggesting that mainly small companies inhibit a risk for the supply chain. These findings contribute to the existing theoretical body of knowledge by identifying a three-to-five-year period for six sigma implementations until six sigma maturity. Practically, the findings contribute to the research by explaining the need for a continuous supplier development over a three-to-five-year period until the company meets its performance requirements, with a supply chain risk incorporated in lower-tier ranks and with small companies.

Abstract (sommario):
The importance of performance based benchmarking has become a necessity in a modern construction company and presents a constant challenge for the construction industry. The aim of this paper is to elaborate significance, role and types of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) in the construction industry and show how different management perspectives perceive the indicators. A literature review was carried out in order to generate a listing of KPIs, used among academe and the industry. Afterwards, using surveys and semi‐structured interviews, the data was gathered from more than 30 South‐East European construction companies. Results were analyzed, producing a final set of 37 indicators. This study identified a low level of awareness of KPI models and performance management processes among the companies. Furthermore, the analysis showed a substantial difference in perception of KPIs among investors, consultants and contractors, which consequently led to a compiling list of KPIs. The top ten KPI's are: Quality, Cost, Number of investor interferences, Changes in project support, Time increase, Client satisfaction, Employees’ satisfaction, Innovation and learning, Time and Identification of client's interest. The paper concludes with final remarks and guidelines for the implementation of KPIs in practice.
