Abstract (sommario):
Recent advances in tracer, illumination, and camera technology, paired with new processing algorithms, have been pushing the limit of scale for three-dimensional flow measurements. The present study reflects on the state-of-the-art and discusses the required steps to enable full-scale, in situ flow measurements in very large measurement volumes. In particular, we focus on industrial and environmental applications, where the measurement time, the processing time, and the costs all have to be minimized. A single-camera approach that enables measurements with natural illumination in very large volumes is presented. The required infrastructure is discussed along with experiments to quantify the experimental errors of the proposed single-camera approach.

Abstract (sommario):
Quantifying the condition of large cultural relics, such as marine archaeological shipwreck, is important to verify stability and reliability. Deformation monitoring system plays a key role in the preservation and long-term conservation of cultural relics. Two-dimensional digital image correlation (2D-DIC) method has proven its efficiency in being able to provide accurate quantitative information of structural deformations. In this study, a deformation monitoring system with four cameras based on 2D-DIC is developed to perform noncontact, optically based measurement to monitor the deformation of shipwreck in museum environment with low and varying illumination. Because the consistency of the accuracy of 2D-DIC measurements for different locations is the most basic requirement in the application of structural deformation monitoring, selecting the appropriate exposure time and quantifying the bias errors on 2D-DIC measurements should be helpful to the optimal use of this optical nondestructive testing technique. A theoretical criterion is deduced to quantitatively characterize the dependence of interpolation bias upon natural patterns and illuminations. Then, an exposure adjustment scheme is built based on the aforementioned criterion. Numerical experiments reveal that the exposure adjustment scheme is able to provide consistency interpolation error for different natural patterns even though the environmental illumination is different as well. The deformation monitoring system with the proposed exposure adjustment scheme is promising for developing flexible and robust in situ structural health monitoring for use in museum environment with low and varying illumination, making 2D-DIC technique a really useful tool for in situ long-term monitoring of large cultural relics.

Abstract (sommario):
A cost-effective and low-power-consumption underwater microscopic imaging system was developed to capture high-resolution zooplankton images in real-time. In this work, dark-field imaging was adopted to reduce backscattering and background noise. To produce an accurate illumination, a novel illumination optimization scheme for the light-emitting diode (LED) array was proposed and applied to design a lighting system for the underwater optical imaging of zooplankton. A multiple objective genetic algorithm was utilized to find the best location of the LED array, which resulted in the specific illumination level and most homogeneous irradiance in the target area. The zooplankton imaging system developed with the optimal configuration of LEDs was tested with Daphnia magna under laboratory conditions. The maximal field of view was 16 mm × 13 mm and the optical resolution was 15 μm. The experimental results showed that the imaging system developed could capture high-resolution and high-definition images of Daphnia. Subsequently, Daphnia individuals were accurately segmented and their geometrical characters were measured by using a classical image processing algorithm. This work provides a cost-effective zooplankton measuring system based on an optimization illumination configuration of an LED array, which has a great potential for minimizing the investment and operating costs associated with long-term in situ monitoring of the physiological state and population conditions of zooplankton.

Abstract (sommario):
The water oxidation reaction is considered as the bottleneck and rate-determining step in photoelectrochemical water-splitting processes. To achieve efficient water oxidation on the photoanode, sufficient built-in potential on semiconductors under light illumination needs to be maintained. Herein, we introduced the in-situ Electric Field Induced Second Harmonic Generation (EFISH) technique to probe the change of built-in potential under the water oxidation reaction process of a single-crystal rutile TiO2 photoanode. Under the dark condition, parabolic relation between the second harmonic generation signal and applied potential is observed in TiO2 depletion region. Under UV illumination, the EFISH signal decreased compared to dark at the photocurrent saturation potential region. Change in the signal is attributed to the decrease of built-in potential in TiO2. The amount of built-in potential change increased with light illumination and saturated at 520 mV under 15mW/cm2 360 nm UV illumination in an unbuffered solution. This light-induced band edge unpinning effect can be explained by the accumulation of holes at surface states and surface protons at Helmholtz layer that are generated under illumination. Kinetic isotope EFISH experiments suggest that proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) is the rate-determining step in water oxidation process. Screening of built-in potential under illumination can be mitigated by adding buffer ions, suggesting that the rate-determining step can be altered by changing the solution microenvironment.

Abstract (sommario):
The research presented in this thesis manuscript is organized into two main sections. The first section investigates the photocatalytic degradation of N-methoxy-N-(trimethylsilylmethyl)benzaldehyde in the presence of rose Bengal in acetonitrile. We utilized various techniques, including 1D NMR experiments, 1H photo-CIDNP, and 2D 1H-13C HSQC and HMBC analyses, alongside both in situ and ex situ illumination. These methods enabled us to elucidate the structures of several intermediates and products formed during the reaction. Notably, ex situ illumination, executed through a continuous flow system, proved particularly beneficial for complementing our in situ results and making comparisons with synthesized products, underscoring the significant role of ex situ illumination in the study of photochemical reactions. Moreover, the 1H photo-CIDNP experiments clearly indicated that the degradation of the hemiaminal ether in the presence of rose Bengal occurs via the formation of a cation radical, without the generation of any 1,3-dipole intermediates. In the second section, we shifted our focus to the mechanism of the photo-induced alkylation reaction via an EDA complex (Katritzky salt/DIPEA), employing NMR in conjunction with in situ illumination. 1H photo-CIDNP experiments revealed the presence of two distinct EDA complexes in the reaction medium: a 1:1 complex and a 1:2 complex (Katritzky salt: DIPEA), which absorb at λ = 450 nm and λ = 520 nm, respectively. Additional 1D 1H NMR and 1H photo-CIDNP studies demonstrated the absence of leaving group diffusion from the Katritzky salt, confirming that the alkylation reaction occurs within the solvation sphere of the EDA complex. These findings, along with data obtained from 1H DOSY NMR experiments, allowed us to ascertain the nature of the aggregates (EDA complex/substrate) participating in reactivity at both wavelengths. This clearly illustrates the close relationship between the proportion of these aggregates in the reaction medium and the yield of the photo-induced alkylation reaction

Abstract (sommario):
As a critical step after the discovery of material culture in the field, archaeologists have a need to document these findings with a slew of different physical measurements and photographs from varying perspectives. 3-D imaging is becoming increasingly popular as the primary documenting method to replace the plethora of tests and measurements, but for remote areas 3-D becomes more cumbersome due to physical and environmental constraints. The difficulty of using a 3-D imaging system in such environments is drastically lessened while using the RAHAS technique, since it acquires scans untethered to a computer. The goal of this thesis is to present the RAHAS Structured Light Illumination technique for 3-D image acquisition, and the performance of the RAHAS technique as a measurement tool for documentation of material culture on a field trip to the Rio Platano Biosphere in Honduras.

Ait, Fqir Ali Fatima Zahra. "Développement et caractérisation de nouveaux procédés de passivation pour les capteurs d'images CMOS". Thesis, Lyon 1, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013LYO10186.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In order to maintain or enhance the electro-optical performances while decreasing the pixel size, advanced CMOS Image Sensors (CIS) requires the implementation of new architectures. For this purpose, deep trenches for pixel isolation (DTI) and backside illumination (BSI) have been introduced as ones of the most promising candidates. The major challenge of these architectures is the high dark current level (Idark) due to the generation/recombination centers present at both, DTI sidewalls and backside surfaces. Therefore, the creation of very shallow doped junctions at these surfaces reducing Idark and further crosstalk by drifting the photo-generated carriers to the photodiode region appears as key process step for introducing these architectures. For the backside surface passivation, a very shallow doped layer can be achieved by low-energy implantation followed by very short and localized heating provided by pulsed laser annealing (PLA). In the melt regime, box-shaped profiles with activation rates close to 100% and excellent crystalline quality have been achieved. The non-melt regime shows some potential, especially for multiple pulse conditions. In the optimal process conditions, very low level of Idark comparable to the standard reference has been achieved. In the other side, the passivation of DTI sidewalls has been performed by in-situ doped Epitaxy. Deposited layers with good uniformity and doping conformity all along the DTI cavity have been achieved. The electrical results show Idark values lower than the standard reference

Solignac, Charlotte. "« quam ampla sit via illuminativa ». L’amplitude de la lumière selon Bonaventure de Bagnoregio". Thesis, Sorbonne université, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SORUL037.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Bonaventure and light: the issue seems at first and for most medievalists resolved.Yet the establishment of the genesis of his definition of light (II Sent., d. XIII) — and in particular the way in which Robert Grosseteste's ideas reach him — is still to be determined. The idea of a metaphorical and analogical use of light and its epistemic dimension makes it possible to evaluate better the theory of knowledge as light, that is, its actual amplitude, often reduced to the divine enlightenment of Man, both intellectual and moral. This knowledge of light, which makes it possible to consider knowledge as light through metaphor and analogy, and thus a whole epistemology by light, is verified in the cosmology and in the theory of beauty of the Friar Minor in which light plays indeed a principle-like and paradigmatic role. Finally, that all these philosophical and theological implications of light are recapitulated in Christ understood according to the Scriptures as splendor, sol iustitiae, lux mundi, an understanding clearly inspired by the reading of the fourth Gospel and the Book of Wisdom by Bonaventure, bachelor of the Bible, still needs to be elucidated. It is by seeking as much on the side of studies at the Faculty of Arts of Paris from 1235 to 1243 that on the writings of Bonaventure, as baccalaureus biblicus and then baccalaureus sententiarus, that the question of light in his work can be interpreted. We therefore propose in this book to open some avenues of understanding of the bonaventurian via lucis

"A System for In Situ UV-Visible Illumination of Transmission Electron Microscope Samples". Master's thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.15192.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
abstract: A system for illuminating a sample in situ with visible and UV light inside a transmission electron microscope was devised to study photocatalysts. There are many factors which must be considered when designing and building such a system. These include both mechanical, optical, and electron optical considerations. Some of the restrictions posed by the electron microscope column are significant, and care must be taken not to degrade the microscope's electron optical performance, or to unduly restrict the other current capabilities of the microscope. The nature of these various design considerations is discussed in detail. A description of the system that has been added to the microscope at ASU, an FEI Tecnai F20 environmental transmission electron microscope is also given. The system includes a high brightness broadband light source with optical filters, a fiber to guide the light to the sample, and a system for precisely aligning the fiber tip. The spatial distribution and spectrum of the light reaching the sample has been characterized, and is described in detail.

Abstract (sommario):

New technology for ex vivo microscopy is needed to deliver point of care pathology, which can benefit margin assessment and biopsy screening for cancer management. Current permanent histopathology method requires fixation, sectioning and staining. This process is very labor intensive and time consuming which prevents pathology analysis at point of care. We believe that structured illumination microscopy (SIM) of rapidly stained ex vivo tissues can be used to address the needs in these areas. SIM is a wide-field optical sectioning technique that uses patterned illumination to preferentially modulate and retain the in-focus object information separately from the out-of-focus background. Its distinct advantage is that SIM is a wide-field technique, which is light efficient, and the speed is decoupled from the field of view. We will develop and optimize a video rate structured illumination microscope (VR-SIM) to potentially used for point of care pathology for cancer management. Cancer resection surgery remains the primary intervention for most solid tumors. The complete surgical resection of the tumors associated with cure in nearly half of all patients. Incomplete surgical resection, as determined by the presence of residual tumor cells at the surface of the excised specimen, is the primary prognostic indicator for local tumor recurrence and decreased overall survival in a number of organ sites, where positive surgical margin (PSM) rates can exceed 50% for the most advanced tumors. Providing microscopic images of the entire tissue surface to the pathologist during the operation would enable detection of the presence and location of PSMs in time to correct the surgery and significantly reduce the need for harmful and costly salvage treatments. Unfortunately, the technical barrier to progress has been that no fluorescence microscopy method yet described for this application was fast enough to cover large tissue surface areas in 20 minutes, with the resolution to resolve nuclear atypia. When a patient presented with cancer related symptoms or a tumor, the next step in the work up for diagnosis is core needle biopsy, where typically 4-14 cores are obtained in a single biopsy session. However, the current false negative rate of the initial biopsy is up to 30% due to the lack of a fast and accurate point-of-care pathology tool. Diagnostic screening of biopsy tissue is also a concern in biospecimen banking for research purposes. The objective of the biobanking technician is to selectively obtain and preserve as much diseased tissue as possible. However, current limitations in rapid histopathology result in missed opportunities due to random sampling with no immediate feedback and wasted tissue due to destructive techniques for diagnostic confirmation. The design criteria for a point of care pathology technology is: • Be able to cover large tissue area with histological sensitivity within clinical relevant time frame o Margins assessment: image large tissue surfaces ( 60 cm2) of the margin to identify PSMs o Diagnostics Biopsy: image 8-14 biopsies of varying needle size • Easy to use and non-destructive The goal of this work is to optimize VR-SIM for accurate, high-throughput, non-destructive diagnostic imaging of fluorescently stained cancer biospecimens in point-of-care timeframes. In this work, we developed a VR-SIM system to meet the needs of imaging thick tissue and validate the system with tissue-mimicking phantoms. We compared the performance of VR-SIM with confocal microscope in thick tissues, and investigated the use of different strategies to improve VR-SIM for large specimen imaging. We determined the optimal imaging parameters to achieve the optimum performance metrics (speed, resolution, and contrast) for point-of-care prostate biopsy and surgical margin imaging, and we conducted pilot clinical studies to evaluate the feasibility of VR-SIM imaging for in-procedure surgical and biopsy guidance.

Abstract (sommario):
Elaine began reviewing exhibitions for ARTnews in April 1948, working under Thomas B. Hess, with whom she had a romantic relationship. (She was also briefly involved with critic Harold Rosenberg.) Tutelage with critic Edwin Denby helped hone her craft. Her reviews ranged widely, deftly encapsulating an artist’s style and approach within the 200-word limit. In 1949, she switched to the magazine’s “X Paints a Picture” features, a detailed treatment of the featured artist’s process. The function of criticism is to “cast some light on” the work, she said, rather than to sit in judgment. But she maintained the critic’s right of interpretation, regardless of the artist’s intentions. Among the artists and writers she befriended during this period were Larry Rivers, Fairfield Porter, and Frank O’Hara. In 1955, she began writing about larger themes, beginning with “Subject: What, How or Who?” which bravely countered ideas promulgated by critic Clement Greenberg.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of East Asia to U.S. national security policy. East Asia was an important venue of contestation for the United States during World War II and the Cold War. Presently, the United States has multiple regional alliances and partnerships and is deeply integrated with the region’s political economy. The region is also the site of a number of critical interstate rivalries that directly impinge on U.S. interests. This chapter evaluates the literature on the U.S.-China relationship and territorial disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea. This chapter contends that neorealist theory offers a particularly illuminating lens in which to understand interstate rivalry in East Asia.

Abstract (sommario):
West Point is the ideal laboratory for studying the dynamics of character, honor, and leadership: first, it operates a comprehensive honor education and enforcement program that has been subjected to rigorous Congressional scrutiny; second, it builds all of its academic, athletic, and military programs on this bedrock of honor. As a result, West Point invests heavily in mentoring, training, and evaluation to ensure the leadership and character development of its 4,000 cadets. From Civil War General Robert E. Lee to astronaut Edwin E. Buzz Aldrin to basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, West Point has groomed leaders whose contributions far exceed the successful management of their immediate charges. By illuminating the principles by which West Point teaches leadership,Stand Your Groundnot only provides a unique tour behind the scenes at this revered institution, but, more generally, imparts lessons of honor and character-building that can be adopted by any aspiring leader. Management professor and West Point graduate Evan Offstein approached leaders at the U.S. Military Academy and the Department of the Army with two primary questions: (1) How does West Point develop its leaders?; (2) Can other individuals and organizations apply these methods effectively? Two years later, after conducting extensive on-site research at West Point and with business leaders in a variety of industries, he offers unprecedented access to the process of leadership development at West Point, and practical insights that can, indeed, be applied in any type of organization that strives to operate on the principle of integrity.

Abstract (sommario):
In this research, a proficient method for the synthesis of TiO2/PPy and TiO2/PPy/GO nanocomposites is explored. These nanocomposites were prepared by one-step in situ deposition oxidative polymerization of pyrrole hydrochloride using Ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidant in the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles cooled in an ice bath. The obtained nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, UV-Vis, and FTIR techniques. The obtained results showed that TiO2 nanoparticles have been encapsulated by PPy with a strong effect on the morphology of TiO2/PPy and TiO2/PPy/GO nanocomposites. The photocatalytic degradation of rose Bengal, and Victoria blue dye was done under different conditions regarding concentration of dye, time of illumination, pH, and dose of the photocatalyst. The maximum photodegradation was found at 7 pH, 20 ppm concentration of VB and 25 ppm of RB dye solution, 800 mg/L for VB and 1600 mg/L for RB amount of photocatalyst, and 120 min irradiation of visible light. Kinetics of photodegradation were investigated for Victoria blue and rose Bengal dye and found first order kinetics.

Abstract (sommario):
An in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigation has revealed that silver metal clusters (Ag-NCs) can enhance the redox property of cerium oxide (CeO2) at relatively lower temperatures by oxidizing Ag-NCs to Ag2+ and Ag3+ states. Strong metal support interaction (SMSI) effect at the interface is indicated by a specific interaction seen in high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images of CeO2/Ag-NCs, confirming Ag-NC encapsulation by deposited CeO2 layer after heating. Through chemisorption processes, the SMSI effect aids in the release of oxygen from the ceria surface by making a bond of Ag, O, and Ce. Consequently, employing silver as a supporting novel metal improves the redox behaviour of CeO2 at nearly 100°C. The band gap of cerium is modified because of this interaction as shown by UV-vis spectroscopy, influencing the electronic charge transport property of ceria. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics in silver cluster supported ceria thin film verify the significant increase in current under visible light illumination as compared to the current in dark conditions. This renders that Ag-NCs supported CeO2 is suitable for photocatalysis and the capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristic confirms the enhanced storage capacity of Ag-NCs /CeO2-based metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices qualifies it for use as non-volatile memory (NVM) devices.

Abstract THIS paper examines three pairs of passages in Herodotus which sit right next to each other in the text and seem to be about quite different things. I hope to show that these contiguous sections are in fact intimately linked-whether by what used to be called ‘ar chaic logic’, or some other mechanism of association-in a kind of symbiotic relationship. The juxtaposed elements turn out in each case to be complementary, or paraphrastic, or to provide reciprocal illumination in some way; they seem to mirror each other.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter reviews the spectroscopic properties of metalloproteins that are vital for their monitoring and for their illuminating of the details of the metal site. The chapter mentions properties that are directly related to the function of the metalloprotein, which are distributed between those that originate from polypeptide from those arising from the metal ion. It also analyses the artificial division of metalloprotein that act synergistically, which results in a unique entity. The chapter talks about protein, which imposes a rigid and often unusual arrangement of ligands around the metal ion. It explains how protein provides a pathway for the protected or guided entry of substrates to the metal site.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose shows us simultaneously a twentieth-century library and a medieval one, while presenting readers with the trope of the library as physical and ideological battle-site that has featured in earlier chapters of Libraries in Literature. Alert to ways in which Eco’s crime novel draws on Borgesian visions of the library as labyrinth, this chapter shows how in its presentation of library and scriptorium The Name of the Rose is deeply attuned to medieval culture and actual medieval libraries. At the same time, the novel presents both library and scriptorium in terms of mirroring, reflection, and refraction, implying that learning and book culture involve not only illumination but also opacity and confusion. Ultimately, presenting a spectrum of ideas about the role of reading and knowledge, Eco’s library represents at once the sum of a living civilization’s values and, ironically, the potential enemy of civilized life.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The deposition efficiency (DE) of a particular powder for a particular thermal spray process is very important factor when coating economics is being considered. There are many coating applications, however, where it is also important to know how the deposition efficiency changes during a longer coating process. Normally the DE is determined as mass ratio of powder fed into the process and corresponding weight gain of the sample. In this work the deposition efficiency has been determined for aluminum oxide powder in atmospheric plasma spraying using different spray parameters and electrode wear states. The coating process and in-flight particles were monitored using a fast non-intensified CCD-camera. Using digital image analysis the relative hot particle concentrations and velocity distributions were calculated from images. The possibility to use a CCD camera based monitoring system for in-situ measurement of DE is discussed. Additional laser illumination and PTV measurements were performed to verify the cold particle flux unseen by the plain CCD camera.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) is a promising technology to manufacture complex geometry in a layer wised manner. Shifting from low volume prototyping to high volume production the demand for quality assurance and reliability of additive manufacturing systems increases hence in-situ monitoring systems are required to monitor process anomalies as input for further process control. Optical based monitoring systems, such as CMOS and CCD camera, are proved as an effective way to monitor layer wise geometrical distortion during manufacturing process. However, due to complex illumination condition in the process chamber, geometries of the printed parts are hard to distinguished and extracted from powder bed properly. In this study, we propose a novel method for an illumination setup by using polarized light sources to improve the distinguishability of printed parts compared to the powder bed on the layer wised monitoring images. In the proposed setup LED light sources are installed on each side of the optical camera with polarizing filters. For every printed layer, two images of powder bed are captured using each light source before recoating. The images are calibrated and stacked afterwards to get the polarized monitoring image at the current layer. The polarized image made in the new setup shows significant improvement of contrast between printed part and powder. The illumination setup was tested on an EOS M290 LPBF machine with AlSi10Mg powder. Polarized monitoring images were compared with images under original machine illumination. The result shows the distinguishable difference between grey values of printed parts and powder bed, where the geometry of the printed part can be extracted with F1 score = 0.977 using Otsu binarization algorithm.

Abstract (sommario):
To meet new Department of Defense (DoD) energy standards, buildings are being constructed, and existing buildings are being retrofitted with tighter envelops. These new standards can reduce operational costs significantly but also limit fresh outdoor air coming into the built environments. This can result in the accumulation of harmful substances within buildings, which can have adverse effects on its occupants. New photocatalytic coatings may be a solution to this ever-increasing problem as they have the ability to destroy both chemical and biological toxins when activated with light. This work evaluated a novel indoor-light-reactive photocatalytic coating for its ability to eliminate or reduce microbial contamination un-der in situ test conditions. However, air and surface sampling revealed no reduction in either viable fungi and bacteria or total airborne mold spores. Additionally, no significant differentiation could be made in the composition of volatile organics between the treated and untreated areas. How-ever, testing the photocatalytic activity of the coating with standardized test methods and increased illumination, revealed the coating did exhibit antimicrobial activity against mold, bacteria, and viruses. This suggested that there may be limited benefit to using the indoor-light-reactive photocatalytic coating to inhibit microbial contamination unless specific lighting conditions can be met.

Abstract (sommario):
Commercial agriculture has come under increasing pressure to reduce nitrogen fertilizer inputs in order to minimize potential nonpoint source pollution of ground and surface waters. This has resulted in increased interest in site specific fertilizer management. One way to solve pollution problems would be to determine crop nutrient needs in real time, using remote detection, and regulating fertilizer dispensed by an applicator. By detecting actual plant needs, only the additional nitrogen necessary to optimize production would be supplied. This research aimed to develop techniques for real time assessment of nitrogen status of corn using a mobile sensor with the potential to regulate nitrogen application based on data from that sensor. Specifically, the research first attempted to determine the system parameters necessary to optimize reflectance spectra of corn plants as a function of growth stage, chlorophyll and nitrogen status. In addition to that, an adaptable, multispectral sensor and the signal processing algorithm to provide real time, in-field assessment of corn nitrogen status was developed. Spectral characteristics of corn leaves reflectance were investigated in order to estimate the nitrogen status of the plants, using a commercial laboratory spectrometer. Statistical models relating leaf N and reflectance spectra were developed for both greenhouse and field plots. A basis was established for assessing nitrogen status using spectral reflectance from plant canopies. The combined effect of variety and N treatment was studied by measuring the reflectance of three varieties of different leaf characteristic color and five different N treatments. The variety effect on the reflectance at 552 nm was not significant (a = 0.01), while canonical discriminant analysis showed promising results for distinguishing different variety and N treatment, using spectral reflectance. Ambient illumination was found inappropriate for reliable, one-beam spectral reflectance measurement of the plants canopy due to the strong spectral lines of sunlight. Therefore, artificial light was consequently used. For in-field N status measurement, a dark chamber was constructed, to include the sensor, along with artificial illumination. Two different approaches were tested (i) use of spatially scattered artificial light, and (ii) use of collimated artificial light beam. It was found that the collimated beam along with a proper design of the sensor-beam geometry yielded the best results in terms of reducing the noise due to variable background, and maintaining the same distance from the sensor to the sample point of the canopy. A multispectral sensor assembly, based on a linear variable filter was designed, constructed and tested. The sensor assembly combined two sensors to cover the range of 400 to 1100 nm, a mounting frame, and a field data acquisition system. Using the mobile dark chamber and the developed sensor, as well as an off-the-shelf sensor, in- field nitrogen status of the plants canopy was measured. Statistical analysis of the acquired in-field data showed that the nitrogen status of the com leaves can be predicted with a SEP (Standard Error of Prediction) of 0.27%. The stage of maturity of the crop affected the relationship between the reflectance spectrum and the nitrogen status of the leaves. Specifically, the best prediction results were obtained when a separate model was used for each maturity stage. In-field assessment of the nitrogen status of corn leaves was successfully carried out by non contact measurement of the reflectance spectrum. This technology is now mature to be incorporated in field implements for on-line control of fertilizer application.
