Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – This paper aims to test the nine corollaries concerning the determinants of outsourcing relationship dimensions, strategic manoeuvres, clients’ and service providers’ evaluation regarding outsourcing category and outsourcing relationship types. The paper has the purpose of reviewing the concept of outsourcing in relation to FM, dealing with service providers’ performance and its effect on clients before providing a comprehensive discussion of outsourcing. Design/methodology/approach – A conceptual approach is adopted, suggesting that a study of outsourcing relationship between clients and service providers from these theoretical perspectives is used to develop corollaries about the relationships between the strategic manoeuvres identified and the different dimensions of outsourcing relationship. The corollaries are examined using non-parametric tests. Findings – The model of the facilities management (FM) outsourcing relationships presented in the paper shows performance of outsourcing services through evaluation of outsourcing categories on current and future FM contracts of clients and service providers. As a template of outsourcing relationships, the model is the context for predicting the important outsourcing categories to the future four FM outsourcing contracts, such as building maintenance, security, cleaning and catering. On prediction of those FM contracts, there is an inclination to the types of in-house and technical expertise on category of FM outsourcing relationship types from clients, whilst there is an equal inclination to the type of in-house outsourcing category from service providers. Originality/value – Management on outsourcing relationships between clients and service providers is now essential for effective outsourcing in FM. This paper provides an intriguing insight into how the effect of outsourcing relationships can be strategically implemented into the performance of service providers.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore sourcing strategies for facilities management services using core-competency theory of outsourcing. The aim is to develop a screening framework for deciding the suitability of outsourcing versus in-house delivery for these services based on three levels of managerial functions prevalent in a typical commercial organization. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey was administered for facilities managers in Sri Lanka to investigate the relative importance of these managerial functions for facilities management services and obtain their opinions on the best delivery mode. The managerial functions were derived from a literature review and verified using three semi-structured interviews prior to the questionnaire survey design. Findings The findings showed that facilities management services that are aligned to strategic functions are suitable for in-house delivery, while those that are aligned to tactical and operational functions for outsourcing. Research limitations/implications Further studies should be conducted and extended to other types of organizations beyond commercial ones. Secondly, the quantitative study employed a smaller sample (n = 40), and the survey items were based on the review of literature which was verified using a very small number of interviews (n = 3). Practical implications The proposed framework can be utilized when choosing the best facilities management approach for commercial organizations in developing countries such as Sri Lanka. Originality/value This study contributes to the body of knowledge on the subject of facilities management by exploring the context in Sri Lankan which has not previously been done.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Convective cooling is a critical management strategy for maintaining an environment that promotes production efficiency, thermal comfort, and animal well-being in commercial broiler houses. Variations in house size, design, and equipment configuration contribute greatly to the air velocity distribution within the facility. This study assessed total airflow, air velocity distribution, and quantified the floor area in three facilities experiencing insufficient air velocity for maintenance of production efficiency, thermal comfort, and animal well-being. Test facility 1 was an 18.3 × 170.7 m solid side-wall broiler house, test facility 2 was a 15.24 × 144.8 m solid side-wall broiler house, and test facility 3 was a 12.19 × 121.9 m curtain side-wall broiler house. Total airflow of each facility, measured with a Fan Assessment and Numeration System, was 512,730, 389,495, and 329,270 m3 h-1 for test facilities 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Air velocity distribution patterns were characterized in each house with a Scalable Environment Assessment System (SEAS) and spatial statistics. The air velocity distributions within the test facilities were variable, with notable maxima immediately downstream of the tunnel inlets, which serve as a well-defined vena contracta, and local minima near the leading end of the evaporative pads and the exhaust fans. Equipment within the facilities had an impact on the air velocity distribution by creating reduced cross-sectional areas that resulted in localized increases in air velocity. The percentage of total bird-level floor area in each facility experiencing air velocities below 1.5 m s-1 was 14.3%, 20.7%, and 10.0% for test facilities 1, 2, and 3, respectively. The effective design velocity (Ved) was calculated from total airflow using the measured building cross-sectional area. The Ved measured 2.97, 2.45, and 2.34 m s-1 for test facilities 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Mean cross-sectional air velocity (Vcs) was calculated from SEAS data and normalized using each facility’s Ved to account for differences in building size for comparison. Test facility 1, the largest of the three houses, generated substantially higher Vcs/Ved than test facilities 2 and 3. Test facilities 2 and 3 maintained a larger proportion of Vcs above Ved than test facility 1. Test facility 1 showed 26.5% of the total house length below Ved, while test facilities 2 and 3 had only 20.8% and 17.5%, respectively, of the total house length below Ved. The lower-velocity regions were due to the length of the evaporative cooling pad inlet and the use of tunnel doors, and the exhaust fan placement on the side-walls in test facility 1 created an additional pronounced low-velocity area. Placement of tunnel ventilation fans on the end-wall of the facility, rather than the side-wall, eliminated the low-velocity region at the exhaust end of the facility. Modifications to current practices for broiler production facility construction and evaporative cooling pad inlet installation would be required to minimize the low-velocity region at the inlet end of these facilities. Consideration of house width and physical arrangement of the air inlets, tunnel fans, and internal equipment are critical for improving the uniformity of air velocity in commercial broiler houses. Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe paper aims to investigate current approaches to the management of public sport facilities by local governments. In the Czech Republic, local clubs traditionally played a key role in providing sport to the public. With decreasing participation in organized sport, a significant number of clubs have been forced to transfer their facilities to local governments and the sport position of local authorities has strengthened considerably in recent years. In consequence, there have been alterations in the management of public sport facilities. The findings of statistical analysis emphasize an increasing role of specialized organizations at the expense of in-house management or external provision (facilities hired out to sport clubs). Moreover, local population and type of facility were found to be the possible reasons for different approaches. In-house management is associated with smaller municipalities whereas most of their facilities have the character of public goods. In contrast, publicly funded organizations and municipal enterprises appear in municipalities with larger populations providing sport facilities of regional importance in the form of mixed goods. Finally, clubs, as representatives of external provision, mostly provide sport facilities primarily intended for their own purposes - club goods. In the context of recent works and contemporary trends in sport participation, the research findings indicate that different forms of management may have significant effects not only on efficiency of public budgets but also on conditions for sport at local level - especially on targeting those who would participate in sport if they had access to new opportunities or leisure programs.

Abstract (sommario):
Among the vectorial insect pests, the domestic house fly (Musca domestica L., Diptera: Muscidae) is a ubiquitous livestock pest with the ability to develop resistance and adapt to diverse climates. Successful management of the house fly in various locations requires information about its resistance development and life table features. The status of insect growth regulators resistance and life table features on the basis of age, stage, and two sexes of the house fly from five different geographical locations of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Dirab, Al-Masanie, Al-Washlah, Al-Uraija and Al-Muzahmiya were therefore investigated. The range of resistance levels were 3.77–8.03-fold for methoxyfenozide, 5.50–29.75 for pyriproxyfen, 0.59–2.91-fold for cyromazine, 9.33–28.67-fold for diflubenzuron, and 1.63–8.25-fold for triflumuron in five populations of house fly compared with the susceptible strain. Analysis of life history parameters—such as survival rate, larval duration, pupal duration, pre-female duration, pre-male duration, adult and total pre-oviposition periods, longevity of male, oviposition period, female ratio, and fecundity female-1—revealed significant variations among the field populations. Additionally, demographic features—including the generation time, the finite and intrinsic rates of increase, doubling time, and net reproductive rate—varied significantly among the field populations. These results will be helpful in planning the management of the house fly in geographically isolated dairies in Saudi Arabia.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Nowadays healthcare waste (HCW) has become a big challenge for the hospital management, especially, in developing countries like India. Like other developing countries, Indian healthcare waste disposal (HCWD) industry is also fragmented, as some hospitals are having their own in-house waste treatment facilities and others are outsourcing the process to government authorized Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facilities. Literature also lacks the quantitative studies in selecting the HCWD strategy and, hence, the purpose of this paper is to identify and prioritize the factors, which affect the selection of HCWD strategy and to propose the model to select the HCWD strategy and to apply the proposed model to select the HCWD strategy in Uttarakhand, Northern State of India. Design/methodology/approach Grey theory-based analytic hierarchy process approach has been applied to evaluate the HCWD options and select the appropriate strategy for the healthcare facilities (HCFs). Findings From the literature, six criteria have been used to evaluate the HCWD strategies: “access to expertise,” “overdependence,” “transportation & risk associated,” “Government rules,” “environmental factors,” and “economic factors.” “Outsourcing” strategic option (0.61) got the higher desirability index than “in-house treatment” (0.39). Research limitations/implications The proposed methodology can be used by the researchers and experts in the field to evaluate the strategic options and select the appropriate strategy. Practical implications The HCFs and other generators of HCW can select the alternative, whether they should treat the infectious waste in-house or they should go for outsourcing. Originality/value In the field of HCW management, this is the first study of its kind, which helps to evaluate and select the HCWD strategies. The proposed model has been applied in Uttarakhand, Northern State of India to make the comparison between “in-house” and “outsource” strategies.

Abstract (sommario):
The article analyzes business processes using the example of the miniresort “Lazurny Bereg”. Of the four business processes (the main one, the accompanying one, development and management), the main business process turned out to be the least problematic. At the preliminary stage of identifying problematic processes, the employees of the enterprise voiced specific shortcomings for each of the business processes that, to one degree or another, affected the development of the enterprise. Among the shortcomings were named: lack of accounting, insufficiently “transparent” scheme for the areas of responsibility, incompetence and lack of personnel, insufficiently coordinated interaction between departments and guests, chaotic actions of the management, etc. In order to properly organize business processes of economic activity, it is necessary to eliminate all the visible shortcomings. The article provides recommendations for their elimination, which consist in regulating enterprise business processes (each of them is described in a separate regulation), which will fully describe them and the procedure for interaction between employees of departments that are related to a particular process. The implementation of the proposed recommendations in the activities of the miniresort pursues the following goals: elimination of spontaneity in work and the accumulation of knowledge, full control over the passage of all stages of business processes, internal audit, reduction of work time and minimization of errors. It is proposed to evaluate the efficiency of regulation of business processes of the miniboarding house “Lazurny Bereg” using the questionnaire method. For this, a questionnaire has been developed to assess the effectiveness of business processes, which must be filled out by the manager, restaurant administrator, boarding house administrator, marketer and head of the reservation service. The requirements for the procedures within the questionnaire are set out, as well as the interpretation of the results.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of the research is aimed for a solution that is to establish the dynamic impact function of surrounding multi-attribute for house pricing. It is also able to measure the ripple effect and allows the hedonic parameter estimates to vary from point-to-point. A comprehensive literature review is carried out to obtain an adequate theoretical basis for the corresponding hypothesis and concepts. The proposed dynamic impact function for multi- attributes is then constructed based on the characteristics of surrounding facilities. Adopting the convenience sampling criteria of 95% confidence level on the data sampling and 10% limit of error in a 5−95% proportion, we collect the empirical data of 39 yearly house sales in the investigated urban areas of Taipei city focusing on housing prices and then utilize them for evaluating and adjusting the function. The actual house price and that of proposed function affected by Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations are analysed, resulting in the correlation coefficient at 0.946 (single attribute) and 0.944 (multi-attribute), respectively. The findings support that proposed function can highly represent the house pricing pattern and be an accurate tool for appraisers.

Abstract (sommario):
Asma Nadia is a reading house at Sumbang Subdistrict, Banyumas Regency, Central Java which started on May 26th , 2016. There were nine volunteers at the reading house. The objective of reading house was to increase reading interest and build mental character especially for children. In fact, the reading interest was high but it was not supported with adequate reading house facilities. The limited reading space in reading house made them to shift another area. In addition, the collection of books was limited as well. In terms of library management, there were many unrecorded and unclassified books and ability of volunteers to use information technology were relatively low. Morover, In terms of funding, there had been several efforts made by volunteers such as selling drinks or making paper flower but those were undeveloped well. So, by those problems, some programs had been created such as training Senayan Library Management System (SLIMS) software, classifying and labelling books, holding on e-commerce business communication strategies workshop and children writing competition. The generated outcome from the internal community activities were implemented for library information systems, publications on ISSN community service of scientific journal, and online publication.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the development of knowledge about facilities management (FM), in particular, the management of FM services in practice, education and research. The paper questions whether we know more about optimal models for in-house or outsourcing FM after 25 years of applied research and development of best practices. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on literature reviews, case studies and personal experiences from practice for over 25 years, concentrating on the public sector. The paper maintains an international focus on the FM development, with particular focus on the development in Norway and the Nordic countries. The knowledge development triangle, and its integration of education, research and practice, is used as an underlying theoretical framework. Findings The knowledge regarding management of FM services in both the public and private sector has been developed over the past two decades. The changes in both sectors is reflected in all the three aspects of the knowledge triangle. While the use of outsourcing increased significantly in popularity during the past 25 years, the Norwegian profile continues to have limited use of outsourcing. Research limitations/implications The paper is based on a qualified selection of doctoral theses, research reports and scientific articles published in the period 1990-2015. The explorations include limited quantitative data. Practical implications The choice for FM in practice, whether fully or partly to produce services with internal resources or to make arrangements with external suppliers, is an important strategic decision regarding the choice of a procurement strategy for the company or the organisation. This decision is not necessarily about outsourcing or in-house but rather the strategic sourcing and management of the needed services. Originality value A total of 25 years of research have shown that a simple solution and answer to the questions about in-house or outsourcing FM services is lacking. To find a good solution, it is necessary to understand the content of FM services with respect to quality and efficiency, and to understand the interaction between FM, the core activities and the users.

Abstract (sommario):
Cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) has rapidly expanded with the introduction of direct electron detectors, improved image-processing software and automated image acquisition. Its recent adoption by industry, particularly in structure-based drug design, creates new requirements in terms of reliability, reproducibility and throughput. In 2016, Thermo Fisher Scientific (then FEI) partnered with the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, the University of Cambridge Nanoscience Centre and five pharmaceutical companies [Astex Pharmaceuticals, AstraZeneca, GSK, Sosei Heptares and Union Chimique Belge (UCB)] to form the Cambridge Pharmaceutical Cryo-EM Consortium to share the risks of exploring cryo-EM for early-stage drug discovery. The Consortium expanded with a second Themo Scientific Krios Cryo-EM at the University of Cambridge Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. Several Consortium members have set up in-house facilities, and a full service cryo-EM facility with Krios and Glacios has been created with the Electron Bio-Imaging Centre for Industry (eBIC for Industry) at Diamond Light Source (DLS), UK. This paper will cover the lessons learned during the setting up of these facilities, including two Consortium Krios microscopes and preparation laboratories, several Glacios microscopes at Consortium member sites, and a Krios and Glacios at eBIC for Industry, regarding site evaluation and selection for high-resolution cryo-EM microscopes, the installation process, scheduling, the operation and maintenance of the microscopes and preparation laboratories, and image processing.

Abstract (sommario):
The sharp increase in refugee numbers arriving in the European Union has recently caused major and manifold challenges for the member states and their administrative services. Location based situation reports and maps may support the refugee management from local to European level. The first support is mapping of the geographical distribution of migrating people which needs more or less real time data. The actual data sources are location related observations along the routes of refugees, actual satellite observations and data mining results. These tools and data are used to monitor spatial distributions as well as extrapolate the arrival of refugees for the subsequent weeks. The second support is the short term update of the location of initial registration facilities and first reception facilities, their capacities, and their occupancy. The third management level is the systematic inquiry for unoccupied housing facilities and for empty places within build-up areas. Geo-coded data sets of house numbers have to be cross-referenced with city maps and communal inhabitants address data. The legal aspects of data mining and secured access to personal data are strictly controlled by the administration allowing only limited access and distribution of data and results. However, the paper will not disclose scientific progress in Earth Observation and GIS, but will actually demonstrate an urgently needed new combination of existing methods to support actual needs. The societal benefits of EO/GIS are no longer just potential possibilities, but actual results in real political, administrative and humanitarian day to day reality.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The house fly is a ubiquitous pest commonly associated with animal facilities and urban waste. When present in large numbers, house flies can negatively impact humans and animals through nuisance and the transmission of pathogens. Since the development of fly traps and sticky papers to capture flies in the late 1800s, these and other methods have been used as a means to monitor change in house fly density or fly activity over time. Methods include substrate sampling to record density of immature flies, visual observations of adult fly activity, instantaneous counts of landing or resting flies, accumulation of adult flies on/in traps, or accumulation of fly fecal and regurgitation spots deposited by flies onto white cards. These methods do not estimate true house fly density, but rather provide an index of house fly activity that is related to both fly density and the frequency of individual fly behavior (e.g., frequency of flight, landing events) and which is likely more predictive of negative impacts such as nuisance and pathogen transmission. Routine monitoring of house fly activity is a critical component of a house fly management program. Fly activity should be held to a level below a predetermined activity threshold ('action threshold') above which negative impacts are anticipated to occur. This article is a review of methods utilized for monitoring house fly (Diptera: Muscidae) activity.

Abstract (sommario):
Over a decade has now elapsed since the last national guidelines from Government health departments about the management of deliberate self-harm, although the scale of the problem has remained unchanged. Three years ago the Royal College of Psychiatrists issued a consensus statement which set standards for suitability of staff, particularly with regard to training, experience and supervision, the available facilities for assessment, the range of appropriate management options, communication of these and management of services. This postal questionnaire study in one health region of England of all senior house officers and registrars working in psychiatry found that levels of training and supervision varied widely and often fell below those suggested.

Abstract (sommario):
The determinants of residential location choice have not been investigated in many developing countries. This paper examines this topic, including the influence of urban travels on house location decision-making in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Based on 8284 face-to-face interviews in Istanbul, Tehran, and Cairo, the dummy variable of residential location choice, including two categories of mobility reasons and other factors, was modeled by binary probit regression modeling. By means of receiver-operating characteristic analysis, the cutoff value of commuting distance and the time passed from the last relocation was estimated. Finally, the significant difference between the value of these two variables for people with different house location reasons were tested by Mann–Whitney U-test. The results show that the eight variables of shopping-entertainment mode choice in faraway places, frequency of public transit trips, neighborhood attractiveness perception, age, number of driving licenses in household, commuting distance, number of accessed facilities, and the (walkable) accessibility of facilities influence the residential self-selections. People who chose their current home based on mobility commute a daily mean distance of 8596 m and relocated less than 15.5 years ago, while those who chose their home based on other reasons, such as socioeconomics or personal reasons, commute longer and moved to a new house more than 15.5 years ago. This shows how the attitudes of people about residential location have changed in the MENA region, but there are still contextual differences to high-income countries.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of a study undertaken in Germany was to provide a comprehensive picture and a comparative analysis of existing and planned education and training facilities in relation to hazardous wastes, and to identify educational and training needs of personnel working at hazardous waste facilities or involved in the transportation of hazardous wastes. The educational level of management and supervisory personnel is high. Most operatives have completed little more than basic schooling and have not received any prior training in the handling of hazardous wastes. Training provision varies considerably between works. A high proportion of training is undertaken in-house by training-on-the-job. The educational background of most drivers of hazardous wastes (road transport) is limited to basic school education. A special certificate is necessary for drivers. Most training relates to hazardous substances in general and there is only little training relating to the specific problems of hazardous wastes.

Abstract (sommario):
For a house that is in a tourism location, the house not only functions as a residence, but also has a high economic value, which can be rented and combined with other businesses so as to maximize profits. Nevertheless, the customs and traditions of Balinese Culture and local wisdom must still be preserved. Sanur Village is one of the tourist destinations in Bali which is very well known to foreign countries with its traditions and natural beauty. Sanur is a tourist area where most of the local people become tourism operators. The houses where people live are traditional and religious places of activity, as well as being a place of business in tourism or supporting tourism facilities. For example, it is used for homestays including supporting facilities, such as restaurants, spas, loundries, bicycles or motorbike rental, and also cooperation as promotion agents for other tourist attractions. For this reason, a planned arrangement is needed in the form of a master plan from the area of the resident's house so that it remains private to be occupied with the family, that is, as a place to live as well as a place to perform traditional ceremonies /events, and also to have privacy for guests who stay overnight. Sanur Homestay is one of the many homestays in Sanur that is owned and managed by the local community. With a fairly large area of land like most house land in the village, the arrangement of the building is still not optimal, where the owner's activity and circulation still mingle with the guests' activities and circulation. Likewise for the standard of accommodation facilities it still needs to be added to maximize services. Planning is done by collecting site and existing buildings data, then grouping which buildings are permanent and which ones are suitable for renovation. Then designed new facilities in the form of buildings for homestays, restaurants, spas, front offices, service areas, and site management in the form of swimming pools and open spaces. The design is carried out with the concept of applying the principles of Traditional Balinese Architecture, namely the application of the Nawa Sanga concept on site zoning and the application of the Tri Angga concept to the appearance figure of the building, which is combined with Modern Tropical Architecture.

Abstract (sommario):
A LCC Analysis of Rainwater Management VariantsThe paper presents results of the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis carried out for several variants of rainfall water management in a newly designed multi-family dwelling house. According to the LCC methodology, calculations were performed for the whole undertaking life cycle with both investment outlays and operation/maintenance costs taken into account. The LCC analysis was carried out, in particular, for a variant assuming that the rainwater collected from the roof will be entirely discharged to the sewage system. On the other hand, the second variant provided for replacement of traditional building roof with a green one. Facilities of that type, thanks to their retention properties, may delay runoff of rainwater and reduce the overall quantity of water discharged from roof surface and therefore can be classified as Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems. In the third case considered, rainwater is to be utilised in the building. It was assumed that precipitation water will be stored in a tank and used in the sanitary water supply system for flushing toilets, thus reducing the overall tap water purchase costs.

Abstract (sommario):
A 4-year retrospective study was conducted regarding the donor potential, consent rates, and organ recovery at a large 500-bed public trauma hospital. An independent organ procurement organization hired two in-house coordinators, one white and one black, to work exclusively in the hospital. The duties of the in-house coordinators included the following: working with nurses, physicians, and residents to identify donors; closely managing and coordinating the consent process; and assisting organ procurement coordinators in donor management. Following the program's implementation and the use of race-specific requesters, a 64% increase in consent rate resulted along with an overall increase of 94% in the number of organ donors. The consent rate of blacks increased 115%, whereas the number of black organ donors increased 154%. The Hispanic consent rate increased 48% with a corresponding increase of 83% in the number of Hispanic organ donors. In addition, the white consent rate increased from 55% (the 3-year average from 1993 to 1995) to 75% in 1996, resulting in a 36% increase following the implementation of the program. The investment of dedicated race-sensitive personnel in large urban county trauma facilities can result in a significant increase in donor conversion rates.

Abstract (sommario):
Background and Aim: The National Institute of Veterinary Epidemiology and Disease Informatics is an animal science research institute under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. The intellectual property management system (IPMS) of the institute oversees technology creation, protection, and transfer/commercialization. This study reviews the effectiveness of the IPMS using traditional strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) evaluation. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive repository was developed to compile the SWOT pertaining to the IPMS based on relevant document reviews and the inputs of experts and stakeholders. The repository was shared among scientists of the institute for rating. The rating process revealed the top ten key SWOT associated with the structure and operation of the IPMS. The weighted SWOT matrix technique was used to identify the best strategies to improve and develop the IPMS further. This included strategies derived from the best combinations of key strengths and opportunities (S-O strategies), key weaknesses and opportunities (W-O strategies), key strengths and threats (S-T strategies), and key weaknesses and threats (W-T strategies). Results: The top-ranked strengths included "possession of patented technology" and "state-of-the-art biosafety laboratory facilities," while "lack of in-house faculty with legal expertise in intellectual property rights (IPR)"" and "lack of technology incubation facilities" were the key weaknesses. The key opportunities included "external funding for research projects" and "market demand for onsite diagnostic tools." The major threats were "lack of market for veterinary diagnostics" and "broadbased patents on research tools and technologies." Conclusion: The strengths of the system, such as a state-of-the-art biosafety laboratory and technology-marketing collaboration with Agrinnovate India Ltd., could be employed effectively to gain from the opportunities tendered by the market demand for on-site disease diagnostic tools (S-O strategies). The limitation arising from a dearth of technical staff could be overcome by technological backstopping through international linkages in the area of disease monitoring and surveillance. Funding from externally supported projects could also be utilized for recruitment of personnel (W-O strategies). Limitations arising from the combination of inadequate in-house IPR expertise and the threat arising from broadbased patents on research tools warrant vigilance (W-T strategies).

Objective. To document successful substantial increases in healthcare worker influenza vaccination rates and to identify reasons for success and failure.Design.(1) Four-year longitudinal characterization of facility vaccination rates, (2) Web-based facility-level questionnaire for influenza coordinators to identify success factors in year 3, and (3) semistructured telephone interviews of influenza coordinators at facilities with substantial increases or declines in year 4.Setting.National single-payer hospital (healthcare) system with 153 hospitals in 5 levels of complexity.Patients.Facility leadership staff.Methods.(1) Vaccination data collected from management sources (doses from pharmacies, denominator data from payrolls); (2) a Web-based survey aligned with a previously administered instrument (Wisconsin Health Department), piloted in-house, modified to reflect national strategies and improvements; and (3) semistructured telephone interviews with influenza coordinators at facilities that improved or worsened by more than 20% between the 2007–2008 and 2008–2009 influenza seasons.Results.Vaccination acceptance rates improved from 45% of healthcare workers in 2005–2006 to 66.5% in 2008–2009. Facilities with lower complexity had higher vaccination rates. No individual factors were associated with improved performance.Conclusions.Sustained management attention can lead to improvements in healthcare worker influenza vaccination rates. Wavering of attention, though, may lead to rapid loss of effectiveness. Declination statements in this system did not contribute to vaccine acceptance.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: In small medical institutions in Japan, red blood cell (RBC) solutions are commonly stored in household refrigerators because of the high cost of blood-only refrigerators. Therefore, we assessed and compared the methods used for preserving the RBC solutions in an active transport refrigerator (ATR), a blood-only refrigerator, and a household refrigerator. Materials and Methods: Irradiated RBC solution samples (280 mL) supplied by the Japanese Red Cross Society (experiments 1–8) and in-house whole blood waste (experiments 9–10) were each divided into two bags. The quality of blood stored in an active transport refrigerator was compared with that of blood stored in a blood-only refrigerator or a household refrigerator. We tested the hemolytic effects of storage and filtration through a transfusion set on the lactate dehydrogenase ratio (LDR) of the RBC solutions. Results: Although the LDR of the RBC solutions stored in the ATR was similar to that of the RBC solutions stored in the blood-only refrigerator, the LDR of the RBC solutions stored in the household refrigerator was significantly higher than that of the RBC solutions stored in the ATR. Conclusion: Temperature management using an ATR is critical for the maintenance of the quality of the RBC solution, which is not achieved by a household refrigerator.

Abstract (sommario):
Nowadays, following the increased interest and need for the issue of sustainability, tourist destinations are called upon to promote sustainable tourism development through the implementation of investments and initiatives. Despite the investments by the destinations, how are these perceived by tourists and residents? Based on this, this paper aims to assess the perception of sustainable investments in a coastal area located in Tuscany, through the administration of a questionnaire among 750 people, including both tourists and house owners. The study adopted statistical logit and probit models to detect the perception of sustainable initiatives in relation to beach satisfaction. Moreover, this research developed a model for understanding if there are substantial differences in perception between Italian and foreign beach users and at the same time between residents/house owners and tourists. The findings reveal that those who perceive investments in sustainability are more than satisfied with beach and facilities. The model shows that foreigners and residents/house owners perceive sustainable investments implemented in the destination more than tourists and Italian respondents. This research can provide support to local operators and policymakers in defining the destination image in relation to sustainability.

Abstract (sommario):
Most of the residents in high-rise housing do not realise the importance of proper building management until the physical buildings and shared facilities have deteriorated. Accordingly, this paper identified the factors for effective repair and maintenance services in a housing setting by utilising a systematic literature review method. Relevant information was analysed through content analysis techniques across various peer-reviewed journal articles. The results yielded the potential factors for effective repair and maintenance services in high-rise housing. This study thus contributes to the field by deriving valuable reference for property management companies tasked with managing such houses in consideration of the factors necessary for effective repair and maintenance towards building quality and sustainability. Keywords: high-rise housing; house; effective repair and maintenance serviceseISSN 2514-751X © 2020 The Authors. Abstract (sommario):
Background: Incessant, COVID-19 outbreaks occurring in nursing and adult care homes are a serious public health concern that continues to create significant healthcare crisis management challenges. Adult care facilities often lack in-house capacity and capability to safely treat its ill residents, while hospitals are strained to balance the influx of patients, allocate scarce resources and protect healthcare workers. Objectives: This project sought to implement a regional, community engaged, intervention model to assist nursing and adult care homes in reducing or preventing outbreaks and risks associated with COVID-19 in rural eastern North Carolina (N.C.).Methods: Design/Setting: Through collaborations between Vidant Health (VH), health departments and a network of community partners, a shared intervention plan was created and implemented to monitor nursing and adult care homes for COVID-19-related outbreaks across 29 counties in rural eastern N.C. A “Strike” team or “Swarm (SWARM) approach was developed as an operationalized concept for rapidly responding to nursing and adult care home outbreaks while providing an array of services and interventions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Comparative analysis was conducted between the mean number of COVID-19-related cases, deaths and length of outbreak time in VH service contracted, SWARM facilities (n = 12) and all other non-service contracted, or non-SWARM facilities (n = 155) in N.C.Results: Nursing and adult care homes under service contract using our SWARM approach experienced fewer average number of COVID-19-related resident ill cases (24.4 vs 29.0), and deaths (1.2 vs. 3.9). The length of outbreak recovery time was far less among SWARM facilities than non-participating, non-SWARM facilities (17.1 vs. 25.4; p < .034).Conclusions: By actively monitoring key indicators, engaging in daily communication with local partners and providing rapid response, VH’s SWARM approach provides a proactive method for preventing further spread of COVID-19 in adult care facilities and communities.

Abstract (sommario):
Helix Nebula Science Cloud (HNSciCloud) has developed a hybrid cloud platform that links together commercial cloud service providers and research organizations’ in-house IT resources via the GEANT network. The platform offers data management capabilities with transparent data access where applications can be deployed with no modifications on both sides of the hybrid cloud and with compute services accessible via eduGAIN [1] and ELIXIR [2] federated identity and access management systems. In addition, it provides support services, account management facilities, full documentation and training. The cloud services are being tested by a group of 10 research organisations from across Europe [3], against the needs of use-cases from seven ESFRI infrastructures [4]. The capacity procured by ten research organisations from the commercial cloud service providers to support these use-cases during 2018 exceeds twenty thousand cores and two petabytes of storage with a network bandwidth of 40Gbps. All the services are based on open source implementations that do not require licenses in order to be deployed on the in-house IT resources of research organisations connected to the hybrid platform. An early adopter scheme has been put in place so that more research organisations can connect to the platform and procure additional capacity to support their research programmes.

Abstract (sommario):
The rapid transformation of Kuala Lumpur conurbation has seen a rise in the demand for private vehicle ownership among commuters, thus leading to an increase in the overall level of congestion within the city center. Towards reducing such issues and focusing on the significance of travel demand management, this study examined the willingness of private vehicle users in using the park and ride facilities. A convenience survey was conducted on 199 respondents through multiple linear regression. It was found that socioeconomic, trip, and technology characteristics have a significant relationship with a willingness to park and ride. The result may assist future transport planners in improving the overall parking management strategies of the city centre. Keywords: Willingness, park and ride, Kuala Lumpur conurbation, regressioneISSN: 2398-4287 © 2019. Abstract (sommario):
The Marshall and Vera Lea Rinker Welcome Center is a US$7.634 million budgeted new building that was opened in August 2016 to house various administrative and student-related functions at Stetson University in Florida. Al Allen, the University’s Vice President of Facilities Management, was the point person entrusted with not only completing the project on time and on budget but also ensuring that the building received external certification that validated its sustainability standards. Allen’s task was not an easy one because he had to address the often-conflicting demands of the project’s stakeholders, many of whom, although well meaning, had no knowledge of how the building’s architectural details related to sustainability. Freeman’s [1] idea of stakeholders affecting an organization’s actions come into play in this case. This paper examines Allen’s path as the project leader and the choices that he confronts via the lens of stakeholder theory as it impacts a sustainability initiative. As a result of engaging in the analysis of this case, the reader should have a fine-grained perspective on how organizations confront the trade-offs between the financial and the sustainability sides of a decision, particularly when these sides may not be completely convergent.

Abstract (sommario):
PurposeGiven the premise of de facto universal standards for FM, this paper aims to investigate development of facilities management (FM) at an Albanian and a Norwegian university hospital through examination of two hypotheses: the university hospital has recognised FM and established a designated FM organisation (H1) and the university hospital provides adequate food and catering services at ward kitchens and buffets (H2). Design/methodology/approachThis is an exploratory and descriptive comparative case study based on a diverse cases’ designs. FindingsThere is limited and strong support for H1 at the Albanian and Norwegian university hospitals, respectively. Both the Albanian and the Norwegian university hospitals rely on in-house production of facilities services, but the Albanian university hospital has outsourced food and catering services. FM and provision of facilities services are deeply integrated within the Norwegian university hospital’s core activities. There is also limited and strong support for H2 at the Albanian and Norwegian university hospitals, respectively. Hence, the Albanian Ministry of Health and the Albanian university hospital’s top management have a comprehensive, but not impossible, task, if the aim is to catch up with the Norwegian university hospital concerning FM. Research limitations/implicationsThis is an exploratory and descriptive comparative case study. Large N studies should be carried out both in Albania and Norway and preferably also in other countries to corroborate and develop the findings. Originality/valueThis is the first comparative study of FM at an Albanian and a Norwegian university hospital.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The House Calls and Behavioral Health Integration project was an inter-agency collaboration to address depression in the older adult population by increasing knowledge and awareness of the condition and providing better access to care. Rowan Medicine, New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging (NJISA) and Jewish Family and Children Services (JFCS) partnered to deliver a comprehensive education, screening and referral program for residents of 3 senior housing facilities serving an estimated 300 elderly and disadvantaged residents. The goal of this year long project was to provide depression education for both housing residents and staff; offer on-going access to free depression screens (using PHQ-9) for residents; and refer residents to an appropriate resource (counseling/case management/house calls) depending on depression screen outcome. Depression education was provided to 15 housing staff and 78 older adult residents. A total of 34 depression screens were completed (82% female, average age=82 years); further evaluation of symptoms was indicated for 59% (n=20) of those screened. Seventeen of the 20 residents accepted a recommendation for a referral to supportive counseling; 3 declined. The average PHQ-9 score was 8.45 (SD=4.42; Range 1-24). Referrals to case management and house calls (n=4) were also made. Feedback from both housing residents and staff was positive and the project team learned valuable lessons about serving older adults in congregate living settings which has informed other programming. The project was successful in providing education, screening and referrals to residents who might not otherwise have access to specialized geriatric behavioral health interventions.
