Testo completoThe purpose of this thesis is to analyze the mother-daughter relationship in a corpus composed of thirteen works, mainly novels, published between 1962 and 2015, by seven Catalan authors. The latter write in Castilian (Esther Tusquets, Ana María Moix and Milena Busquets), in Catalan (Mercè Rodoreda, Carme Riera and Maria Mercè Roca) or in both languages (Jenn Díaz). The mother is linked to origins and identity and, in fact, the mother-daughter relationship is often a ravaged, conflicting, at least complex, area, which makes it an extremely rich subject for writing. We thus propose an analysis at the crossroads of history, sociology, psychology, psychoanalysis and literature which offers a new approach to the relationship of mother to daughter and of daughter to mother. This comparative work allows us to establish similarities between the representations of the maternal figure, typologies of mothers, while noting the diversity and complexity of the mother-daughter relationships in these works and their literary treatment. The mother becomes under the pen of these seven authors a central character, both real and symbolic, who is revisited, reinvented and transmitted through the pages of the literary work. Through this process, writing becomes a means of perpetuating the presence of the mother, of making her exist immortally in the collective memory

Testo completoThe aim of our study is to show evolution of a character, of an image, that of the mother, through novels, poetry and theatre, deeply influenced by the philosophical speech - which includes a medical, a demographic and a political approach. Under the cover of an innovating appearance it results in a increased deep- rootedness of the most conservative functions and images of the mother. The approach marks out three historical periods corresponding to stages, which differ in their intensity to represent motherhood - 1690-1729, 1730-1759, 1760-1790. And important out put of works about motherhood is noticeable in the last period. Concurrently it opens the way to the beaming image of the father confirmed in his powers as head of the family. The approach of the revolutionary period reveals a family that became the XIXth century family - the mother keeping central position, at least in certain precise fields, i. E home and young children's education - such philosophers as Rousseau and Diderot, such moralists as Marmontel and Florian such realistic writers as Retif de la Bretonne and Mercier place her within a constellation - like family where her part appears as more important although it remains a secondary one. The study of the different literary genres shows a certain lack in poetry because poetry had not yet started its evolution and remained tied to a descriptive type of speech that could not allow a possible evocation of intimist scenes imposing the character of the mother. Theatre and comedy in particular, also remained tied to conventions, although some bold prospects appeared with plays such as la mere confidente by marivaux or l'ecole des meres by nivelle de la chaussee. Only novels, a new and promissing genre in the XVIIIth century, seemed to be able to offer new looks on the character of the mother

Testo completoThe mother, more than any other character, is present in history, micro-history and the history of mentalities. Through its various evocations, in its very recurrence, she is a meaningful character. At first, we have confronted the romantic image of the mother with her social representation, we have focused on the middle class, the peasant and the working-class mothers, we have confronted legitimate and illegitimate motherhood, voluntary and compulsive motherhood. But analysing the mother character means concentrating on a romantic case, alchemy of numerous representations which participate in both the temporal and the timeless, the collective and the individual unconscious. We have studied the maternal declension from the glorious mother to the seven grieves blesses virgin, from the madonna to the scapegoat, until Colette tells us the story of Sido, until Cybele - the mother - goddess - dispenses death, until Mauriac gives birth to Genitrix, the mortiferous mother who condemns the king-child

Testo completoThe subject will be looked at through a combined study of her novels, and correspodance, as well as writings by members of her family. The novels chosen all feature the family prominently. The others writings include little known papers, that are likely to refine the image of the mother among Sand's descendants. The concept of "image" , not necessarly a reproduction of the Real, was of special interest here. The study revolves around Lacan's three concepts of the Real, the Imaginary and the Symbolic. First, the study of the Real is based on biographical writings. Some of the doubts that remain as to certain aspects of her life have been underscored thanks to a critical study of the sources. Secondly, we pondered about the passage from the image to the Imaginary - how is it performed ? Another interrogation was about the influence of the mother along Sand's artistic career, whose writting is both a means of escape and a form of sublimation. In the autobiographical writings, the description of the mother opens out on the exaltation of the father ; this is much less the case in novels, which include autobiographical remembrances, but are much more influenced by imagination, an ability which Sand inherited from her mother. Finally, the Symbolical will focus on the three recurrent metaphors of water, caves, and birds, which are all endowes with maternal qualities. Ultimately, the adoption of a psychoanalytical viewpoint seems to be the best way to capture the image of the mother in Sand's novels

Testo completoThe study of woman adultery representation in woman litterature allows to explain her subversive function and tobring some permanent facts of female sexuality to light. The analysis of six excepts (from "guigemar" of marie de france, "la princesse de cleves" of mme de la fayette, "valen tine" of g sand, "l'ingenue libertine" of colette, "les mandarins" of s. De beauvoir and "la chambre des dames" of j. Bourin) is made with the concepts of greimas' semiotique. The mother image, hidden under the one of the lover, correpondsto the most repressed part of woman psychoanalytic history : her love for her mother, and tokes its roots in the most primary narcissism. This repression explains the way of functionning of feminine desire as it is represented : her desire is maintened secret and lays on a splitting body mind. It is linked to a seduction model which recalls the primary seduc -tion excerced by the mother during the bodycare. The present sentimental litterature obeys the same requirements, even if the adultery lover gives his place to a pre-marital lover ; despite of the emergence of love mariage, only the lover and not the husband can sustain this love figure, merged and mystical, which is based on an ideal image of mother daughter relationship

Testo completoIn the works of marguerite duras, the mother-daughter relationship indicates not only one of her central themes but il also determines the meaning of writing itself. Il order to make the act of writing possible, the daughter has to deprive herself of the mother. To achieve the separation, there in no other way but the act of writing. The difficulty involved in the process makes her work more than a simple description of the mother-daugter relationship. The act of writing transforms and recreatres this relationship. The act of writing transforms and substitute to each other. This reciprocal reference also affects the rapport between the writing and the mothe-daugter relationship. The writing and this relationship give birth to each other and transform each other, of which process problematizes the dichotomous framework created between the copy and the originel, the fusion and the separation, or the one and the other

Testo completoThis thesis, which deals with the representation of women in Alain Robbe-Grillet’s work, aims at studying the essential place occupied by women in in his different novels. Naturally, women play an essential part in the life of men. They represent the essence of life. For centuries, she is artistic source of inspiration and place of controversy. That is why the role played by women in Alain Robbe-Grillet’s work seems to us particularly important. [...]

Testo completoThis thesis examines maternal figures in two novels and twenty-five short stories by Kate Chopin (1850-1904). It uses biographical, feminist, historical, psychoanalytical and structuralist approaches and is largely based on close literary analysis of the texts. Kate Chopin's fictional mothers overturn, in varying degrees, the traditional image of the nurturing, ever-present, protective mother. Motherhood is rarely complete, often distorted, always somehow failing. In these stories, the missing mother, repeatedly cut off by mourning, madness, separation or death, leaves a central gap. However, this absence is, paradoxically, essential to the narrative. Maternal lack literally generates the texts. Each story owes not only its drama but its very existence to the missing mother who, never quite present, is never explicitly expressed as such. In this way, the narrative process revolves around the unattainable "real" mother who resists the text, despite Chopin's repeated attempts to write her into this cycle of stories which, it becomes apparent, are woven around a series of repeated failures. The "real" mother, in Chopin’s work, lies elsewhere
