Abstract (sommario):
With the popularity of new social media, automatic image annotation (AIA) has been an active research topic due to its great importance in image retrieval, understanding, and management. Despite their relative success, most of annotation models suffer from the low-level visual representation and semantic gap. To address the above shortcomings, we propose a novel annotation method utilizing textual feature generated by image captioning, in contrast to all previous methods that use visual feature as image feature. In our method, each image is regarded as a label-vector of k userprovided textual tags rather than a visual vector. We summarize our method as follows. First, the image visual features are extracted by combining the deep residual network and the object detection model, which are encoded and decoded by the mesh-connected Transformer network model. Then, the textual modal feature vector of the image is constructed by removing stop-words and retaining high-frequency tags. Finally, the textual feature vector of the image is applied to the propagation annotation model to generate a high-quality image annotation labels. Experimental results conducted on standard MS-COCO datasets demonstrate that the proposed method significantly outperforms existing classical models, mainly benefiting from the proposed textual feature generated by image captioning technology.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Social media is a communication channel that is becoming increasingly widespread. Its impact on people is gaining significance. Numerous studies have shown that social media activity can negatively affect people’s emotional states. The aim of this paper is to review the literature to examine the influence of social media on body image, which is viewed as the perception of one’s own body and the feelings and thoughts associated with it. Research review suggests that Facebook and Instagram use is associated with greater body image dissatisfaction. However, as the use of social media is not homogeneous and not all users are exposed to the same content, a more nuanced approach to measuring its use is required. If an individual follows physical appearance-based accounts on social networking platforms, their home pages will be filled with idealized representations of a human body, leading to more intense and frequent comparisons with other people. Such use unmistakably leads to negative body image, and the solution that stands out is education in media literacy which should develop critical and analytical skills in people. Keywords: body image, media, social networks, Facebook, Instagram

Abstract (sommario):
Social event detection in large photo collections is very challenging and multimodal clustering is an effective methodology to deal with the problem. Geographic information is important in event detection. This paper proposed a topic model based approach to estimate the missing geographic information for photos. The approach utilizes a supervised multimodal topic model to estimate the joint distribution of time, geographic, content, and attached textual information. Then we annotate the missing geographic photos with a predicted geographic coordinate. Experimental results indicate that the clustering performance improved by annotated geographic information.

Abstract (sommario):
In the information age, the rapid development of social media has influenced the public's views and cognition, and has directly and indirectly increased the expectations for companies to fulfill their social responsibilities. Based on a review of previous research literature, this paper argues that the impact of social media on corporate social responsibility (CSR) primarily includes motivational, operational, and effect-based impacts. The motivational impact of social media on CSR can be attributed to four factors: meeting consumer expectations and shaping brand image, reducing the pressure from social media public opinion, gaining interactive incentives from social media, and providing a transparent communication platform to capture stakeholders' attention. Social media also affects the specific practices of companies in implementing CSR activities. It offers a more effective platform for disseminating CSR information, helps establish appropriate communication methods, and enhances CSR image management on social media. Fulfilling CSR through social media can yield positive outcomes, shape corporate reputation and brand image, actively influence consumer attitudes and behaviors, and encourage companies to fulfill their social responsibilities in alignment with publicized information. Future research could focus on the differing impacts of social media on companies of various types and sizes, providing more detailed guidance and recommendations for companies.

Abstract (sommario):
Social networking sites are becoming parts and parcels of our daily life. With the increasing of its popularity, the cybercrimes, targeting these platforms are also increasing. Cybercriminals use this platform to harass the victims personally, socially and financially. Such type of crimes is performed using some of the vulnerabilities of the social networking platforms. Identity theft is one of those crimes which is increasing alarmingly. By creating a fake account, using the same information and profile picture, one can easily take disguise of another person. Hence, the criminal can chat with other persons impersonating the victim. Thus, the criminal takes the disguise of a person and starts harassing other people. The consequence of this problem is very dangerous. By doing so, the criminal ruins the image of the victim. There are so many cases where victims attempted to commit suicide after facing this type of terrible problem. All these things are occurring as the criminal can download or collect the profile picture of the victim easily and open a clone account easily. The availability of information is giving the chance to the cybercriminal to make an account exactly looks like the victim’s one. In this paper, we attempt to prevent this type of identity theft by an image based solution on the social networking platforms. The name of this model is ‘Image Based Identity Theft Prevention’.

Abstract (sommario):
<p>Social media networks are an integral part of people’s daily life. Users share images and texts to express their emotions and opinions. Analyzing the image and text content published by these users can help understand and predict user behavior, so as to carry out marketing, public opinion monitoring and personalized recommendation. Weibo, Wechat and other social media are important ways of self-expression. Images are more intuitive than text. Therefore, more scholars begin to pay attention to the research of image emotion analysis. At present, image emotion analysis methods pay seldom attention to the influence of saliency object and face on image emotion expression. Therefore, we propose a multichannel fusion method based on modified CNN for image emotion recognition. Firstly, saliency target and face target region are detected in the whole image. Then feature pyramid is used to improve CNN to recognize saliency target emotion. Weighted loss CNN emotion recognition is constructed on multi-layer supervision module. Finally, the saliency target emotion, face target emotion and the directly recognized emotion on the whole image are fused to get the final result of emotion classification. Experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the accuracy of image emotion recognition.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Objective: The use of the Internet is widely increasing among the new generation, shaping an important aspect of people's lives. The use of the social media can influence body image concerns, social isolation, and social mood. The purpose of the present study is to assess body image concerns, social isolation, and mood based on the amount of social media use. Method: This study has been conducted using a descriptive method in the form of correlation. The study population was all people aged between 20 and 40 in Shiraz, among which 311 people (191 women and 119 men) has been selected by the convenience sampling method. The tools used in this study were body image concerns Inventory (BICI, 2005), Social Isolation Assessment Standard Questionnaire (SIASI, 2013), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS, 1988), and social media addiction scale (SMAS_AF, 2017). Correlation coefficients (using the SPSS software) and structural equation modeling analysis (using AMOS statistical software) were employed to investigate the variables of social isolation prediction model. Results: The results of the study showed that mood (β=0.15, p=0.007) and use of social media (β=0.19, p=0.0001) can predict social isolation with the mediating role of body image concerns(β=0.18, p=0.001). The results showed that the mood and use of social media can predict social isolation both directly and with the mediation of body image concern. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, mood and use of social media can predict social isolation with the mediating role of body image concerns. Negative mood can make people sensitive to their body image. People have a distorted perception of their body image and this concern leads to social isolation.

Abstract (sommario):
Despite considerable insight into both traditional and social media, the research on these media types is largely mutually exclusive. Consequently, it is largely not known what media tourists use before forming an image of a destination for potential visitation. To provide insight into this phenomena, this study segmented 558 tourists to South Africa based on their media usage and destination image perception. The first segment, experienced South African tourists (39%), did not use media when forming an image of South Africa, but rather focused on their frequent past experience. This segment rated cognitive and behavioral image of South Africa the highest. The second segment, friends and family orientated tourists (21%), utilized personal sources in their destination image formation of South Africa. They also rated the country's image the lowest. The third segment, multiple media usage tourists (40%), employed both traditional and social media in forming their destination image of South Africa. These tourists also rated affective image of the country the highest. While destination marketing organizations (DMOs) need to continue to employ traditional and social media to cater for different consumer learning techniques and different consumer response stages of the largest segment (multiple media usage segments), three fifths of the sample are currently being neglected. Because past experience is incredibly relevant for segment validation and representing destination image of the two smaller segments, the DMO needs to identify through in-depth interviews what South Africa's destination image means to all three segments. This process allows comparisons between the segments to be made. It can identify how these tourists' perception of the country's image has changed with experience and if their perceived image accurately represents what is currently marketed by DMOs.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined the role of corporate websites and company Facebook profiles in shaping perceptions of organizational image in the recruitment context. A primary purpose of this research was to determine whether or not perceptions of organizational image vary across different web-based recruitment methods, specifically examining corporate websites and social networking (SNW) sites, such as company Facebook profiles. A secondary goal was to determine how these perceptions of image are shaped by the objective components of websites and Facebook profiles. Finally, this study sought to determine the most influential components of websites and Facebook profiles, in terms of impacting image, to better understand how organizations can maximize their web-based recruitment efforts. A total of 102 companies selected from Fortune Magazine’s 2011 top 500 were chosen for the study. Perceptions of organizational personality as well as objective assessments of personality were gathered for each organization in a two phase approach. Results indicate that exposure to corporate websites and company Facebook profiles do influence perceptions of image in different ways. Furthermore, individual components of the websites were identified as key drivers for influencing specific image dimensions, particularly for company Facebook pages. Findings are beneficial for advising practitioners on how to best manage their web-based recruitment sources in order to maximize efficiency. The present study serves to further our understanding of the process through which perceptions of organizational image are influenced by new recruitment sources.

Abstract (sommario):
This research investigates boys' masculine appearance-work on image-based social media through a collaborative project involving twenty-six participants aged fifteen to twenty. Feminist ethnography and institutional socio-clinic form the two methodological approaches of this study. Using a (net)ethnographic method involving online immersion and in-depth individual and group interviews conducted in person or remotely, the research examines practices ranging from capturing to editing and sharing self-images. The research design incorporates the use of gatekeepers, photo elicitation, and the sharing of self-narratives. Participants revealed differences in their approach to appearance-work based on the social media platform, the affordances of each, and the recipients identified. The image grammar described by the participants on Snapchat and Instagram, the two image-based social media they use most, is interwoven with the technical skills they demonstrate in producing and interpreting images. Snapchat is perceived as a social camera that fosters the capturing of instant, humorous, and ephemeral images, primarily shared with strong ties. Instagram is described as a showcase for aesthetic self-images, shared in various formats with a broader circle of sociability, primarily composed of weak ties. Boys tend to adopt a spectator posture toward the images they share, particularly those of girls, who, in their view, reproduce aesthetic expectations in the way they present their bodies. The rapid institutionalisation of image-based social media appears to reinforce established forms of domination, particularly regarding gender and sexuality

Abstract (sommario):
Problem definition: The emergence of social media has resulted in that companies to a bigger extent uses them as brand management tools. The increased commercialization in professional team sports led to the fact that professional sports clubs aim to strengthen their brands. Previous research shows that professional sports clubs should take advantage of social media to promote and strengthen relationships with fans and customers, since it will result in increased revenues for the club in the long term. In a Swedish context, however, the research about professional sports clubs’ brand management in social media is extremely limited. Due to this research gap, further research studying Swedish professional sports club’s brand management in social media is eligible. Aim and research questions: The purpose of this study is to examine how and why Swedish professional sports club use social media as a brand management tool. What are the purposes of using social media as a brand management tool for a Swedish professional sports club and how are they fulfilled? What benefits and challenges entails he use of social media as brand management tool in the context of professional Swedish sports? What content is published by professional Swedish sports club on social media and how does it affect its fans? Methodology: This study has combined a quantitative and qualitative research strategy. Content analysis of a case organization's material published on social media, as well as qualitative semi-structured interviews have been conducted to fulfil the purpose of this study. Findings: Social media are important tools for building and deepening the relationship, as well as creating loyalty, between the club and its fans and customers. Social media also fills direct economic purposes. This study has also highlighted clear challenges that sports clubs face when using social media. These challenges are to a big extend due to lack of unanimous views on how and why social media should be used.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of the study was to explore and to understand woman's models with which tune two groups: "Standard" (general population; studied by questionnaires administered to young people at institutes and university), and, "Study" (self-styled anorexic/bulimic young women; studied by the images and comments that published on social networks online –Facebook-). It has also collected information concerning to female models offered by the Mass Media. The interpretation of the results has allowed us to analyze how the models of beauty proposed by Mass Media relate to the ideal self-image of both groups, and how it affects the self-styled collectives of anorexia/bulimia. It follows that the scope of these models in the elaboration of some imaginary ideals is common in young population, but, not in the specifically related to the construct anorexia/bulimia. The research design responds to the qualitative paradigm with interpretative approach, and ethnographic design and Image Based Research (IBR).

Jennings, Joshua Kerby. "On Making a Difference: How Photography and Narrative Produce the Short-Term Missions Experience". UKnowledge, 2017. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/cld_etds/32.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Short-term missions participants encounter difference in purportedly captivating ways. Current research, however, indicates the practice does not lead to long-lasting, positive change. Brian M. Howell (2012) argues the short-term missions experience is confined to the limitations of the short-term missions narrative. People who engage in short-term missions build assumptions, seek experiences, understand difference, and convey meaning, as a result of this narrative. The process of telling and retelling travel stories is integral to the short-term missions experience. Drawing upon literature on tourism, narrative, development, and photography, this study intends to evaluate the inefficacy of short-term missions through the stories which produce and are produced by photography. Through storytelling and photography from 21 short-term missions participants who have served in Ouanaminthe, Haiti, this project deconstructs the short-term missions narrative to understand, what is the relationship between the use of photography and the short-term missions experience? The results indicate a unique relationship between people, photography, and experiences within the framework of short-term missions.

"Image Based Social Media and The Tourist Gaze A Phenomenological Approach". Master's thesis, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.53453.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
abstract: The emergence of social media in concert with improved camera and cell phone technologies has helped usher in an age of unprecedented visual communication which has radically changed the tourism industry worldwide. Serving as an important pillar of tourism and leisure studies, the concept of the tourist gaze has been left relatively unexamined within the context of this new visual world and more specifically image based social media. This phenomenological inquiry sought to explore how image based social media impacts the concept of the tourist gaze and furthermore to discover how the democratization of the gaze in concert with specific features of image based social media applications impacts the hermeneutic circle of the tourist gaze. This in-depth analysis of the user experience within the context of travel consisted of 19 semi-structured photo elicitation interviews and incorporated 57 participant generated photos. Six salient themes emerged from the study of this phenomenon; 1) sphere of influence, 2) exchange of information, 3) connections manifested, 4) impression management and content curation, 5) replicated travel photography, and 6) expectations. Analysis of these themes in conjunction with examples from the lived user experience demonstrate that the tourist gaze is being accelerated and expanded by image based social media in a rapid manner. Furthermore, democratization of the gaze as enabled by technological developments and specialized social media platforms is actively shifting the power role away from a small number of mass media influencers towards a larger number of branded individuals and social media influencers. Results of this inquiry support the theoretical assertions that the tourist gaze adapts to social and technological developments and demonstrates that the concept of the tourist gaze is increasingly important within tourism studies. Practical implications regarding the prevalence of real-time information, site visitation, and “taking only pictures” as sustainable touristic behavior are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
With the convenient, constantly updating presence of social media, people are consuming a flood of images daily. Visual material is now available at a user’s fingertips and the nature of this material has evolved; not only featuring models and celebrities, but friends, peers, and ‘influencers’. The detrimental effects of idealised traditional media on wellbeing (particularly body dissatisfaction) are well documented. A growing body of literature has emerged to address social media’s place in this theoretical landscape, with recent research beginning to consider the effects associated with Instagram – an image-based social media platform. Early findings suggest links between Instagram use and body dissatisfaction, however many of the nuances of this platform, including the perception of ‘influencer’ status, have yet to be considered. In this context, the aim of my thesis was to explore some of the complexities associated with the Instagram platform, with a view to defining the mechanisms that potentially underlie the negative effects associated with viewing some Instagram images on factors such as mood, body dissatisfaction and self-esteem. To this end, my thesis firstly comprises a narrative review (Chapter One). Here I, along with my co-authors, trace media effects from traditional to social media; our discussion culminating in an agenda for future research. From this agenda we distilled two core areas for focus in this thesis: firstly, a need for greater understanding of the key image-based behaviours users engage in on social media (namely image-editing, posting, and ‘liking’), with a focus on self-presentation; and secondly, providing an initial examination of the role of ‘influencers’ in the effects of Instagram use informed by our understanding of social comparison theory. The following chapters are presented in two parts, aligning with our two central themes. In Part One (Chapters Two and Three) we sought to investigate the way social media users engage with image-based content. We identified three key behaviours central to interaction with image-based content: editing, posting, and ‘liking’. Our initial focus was broad, either examining social media more generally, or examining the most popular and well-researched platform, Facebook. Taking this approach allowed us to define the aspects of social media use that warranted further investigation in Part Two’s localised examination of Instagram. Part One, Chapter Two presents a study that utilised the Theory of Planned Behaviour model to predict image-editing intentions, controlling for previous editing platform use, Facebook Intensity, and age, and with the inclusion of Narcissism. Analysis of survey data from participants of a variety of ages indicated that editing application use, Facebook Intensity, attitudes, subjective norms, and Narcissism were all significant predictors of intentions to post digitally altered self-images. Attitudes had the strongest association with intentions, while the contribution made by subjective norms likely speaks to the importance of approval and belongingness on social media. Interestingly, perceived behavioural control was not a significant predictor, with our findings suggesting that users experience a great sense of control over whether their posts are edited or not, and that editing-decision making might be unique from other image-based behaviours. The contribution of Narcissism, albeit small, provided support for the prevailing understanding of photo-based activities as self-promoting and superficial. To complete our general investigation of key behaviours we enquired about the factors that adult users of a broad range of ages consider prior to posting or ‘liking’ an image on social media. In Chapter Three we took a qualitative approach, analysing open-ended responses using thematic analysis. Interestingly, egoistic motivations and considerations of the audience were at the forefront of peoples’ minds when posting and ‘liking’ on social media, supporting early suggestions that ‘likes’ may also be a tool for self-presentation. The results culminated in our understanding of posting and ‘liking’ as complex, multi-factored behaviours, which users do not engage in flippantly. This complexity suggests that engaging with images on social media is stressful, particularly when users are invested in the content (i.e., their own image) and anticipating a good response from the audience. Informed by our greater understanding of key image-based behaviours from Part One, in Part Two we aimed to determine the psychological effects of engaging with Instagram images on mood and body dissatisfaction in adult Instagram users. Addressing the possible stress that may be associated with Instagram use (Chapter Three), and the role that investment in one’s content may play, in Chapter Four we developed a set of items to operationalise a new construct: Instagram investment. This construct describes the emotional connection that users have with the content they post and the response they anticipate from the audience. Using these items, we examined the relationships between Instagram investment and a selection of psychological variables, discovering small, though significant, links with negative psychological outcomes including depression and stress. Additionally, Chapter Four examined a mediation model, whereby Instagram investment mediated the relationship between number of followers and low self-esteem. Though small, this effect suggests that popularity is more important to a user’s self-esteem when they are highly invested in their Instagram use. Chapter Five details a follow-up of the Instagram investment construct, exploring its personality predictors in order to identify adult users who may be prone to greater investment in their Instagram content and response. Instagram investment was predicted by higher neuroticism and lower honesty/humility. The link found here between neuroticism and Instagram investment provided support for our initial suggestions that there may be negative implications associated with being highly emotionally invested in your posts to Instagram. Part Two culminates with Chapter Six. Here we detail the first experimental investigation to manipulate ‘likes’ and ‘follow’ statistics to examine the effect of ‘influencer’ status on adult female viewers’ mood, body dissatisfaction, and self-esteem. In doing so, we contribute finer detail to the broader media effects literature. Participants exposed to the same images alongside either ‘influencer’ (high) or ‘peer’ (low) level statistics experienced significantly greater negative mood than those in a nature control group. No differences were found between the influencer and peer groups, suggesting that popularity is not critical to determining image-effects. Instead, it appears that idealised female content has negative implications for the viewer regardless of perceived status. Overall, the findings of my thesis contribute to the broader understanding of media effects by helping to define the mechanisms by which social media influences the user. My studies present the complex underpinnings of image-based behaviours and suggest that these behaviours are much more than simply ‘clicking a button’. The findings help to define the circumstances under which a user can exert control over their online self-presentation and propose Instagram investment as a potential means of detrimental Instagram effects. Our understanding of social comparison theory as it pertains to Instagram is also extended through this research, with perceived target proximity of little importance and the image itself as the key determiner for effects. This thesis sparks broader questions for social media effects and image-based content, as well as conceptualisation of online identity and self-presentation. For example, in the context of selective self-presentation and image-editing, are there ramifications for how users perceive their actual ‘offline’ selves? In the interests of preserving well-being, users may be best served by limiting the amount of idealised content they view on Instagram, however longitudinal methods are the necessary next-step for painting a complete picture of the impact of Instagram on the viewer.

Talpur, Anmoila. "Mining Tourist Behavior: A study of Tourist Sequential Activity Pattern through Location Based Social Networks". Thesis, 2019. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/40555/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Much of the current research in tourism has focused on tourists’ behavior analyses in order to help management constructing effective tourism policies and strategic planning to cater for a diverse range of tourists. Insight into tourist movement and activity patterns is deemed beneficial for the tourism sector in many ways, such as designing better travel packages for tourists, maximizing the tourist activity participation and meeting the tourist demands. Existing works in this field have only focused on finding tourists’ travel trajectories; however, they have not been able to provide comprehensive and complete information about the actual anticipated activities at visited locations. This is probably due to the limitation of traditional data collection and analysis approaches. This research proposes to adopt mobile social media data for effective capturing of tourist activity information and utilizes advanced data mining techniques for extracting valuable insights into tourist behavior. The proposed methods and findings of the study have the potential to support tourism managers and policy makers in making better decisions in tourism destination management.

Abstract (sommario):
With the rapid growth of users in Social Networking Services (SNSs), data is generated in thousands of terabytes every day. This data contains lots of hidden information and patterns. The analysis of such data is not a trivial task. A great deal of effort has been put into it. Analysing users' behaviour in social networks can help researchers to better understand what happens in the real world and create huge commercial value for social networks themselves.

Abstract (sommario):
At the end of the nineteenth century, the Balkans were animated by cultural movements and socio-political turmoil with the onset of the collapse of the empires. Around the same period, the proliferation of print media and the arrival of moving images gradually transformed urban life, and played an important role in the creation of national and regional cultures. Based on archival research that explores previously overlooked footage and early press materials, Early Cinema, Modernity and Visual Culture: The Imaginary of the Balkans is the first study on early cinema in the region from a transnational and cross-cultural perspective. This book investigates how the unique geopolitical positioning of the Balkan space and the multicultural identity of its communities influenced and shaped visual culture and the development of early cinema until World War I. It highlights how early moving images and foreign film productions contributed to the construction of Balkanist and semi-colonial discourses. Building on approaches such as ‘new cinema history’, ‘vernacular modernity’ and ‘polycentric multiculturalism’ to counter Eurocentric modernity paradigms and to reframe hierarchical relations between centres and peripheries, this monograph adopts an alternative methodology for interstitial spaces. Using the notion of the haptic, it examines the relationship between the new medium and regional visual culture. By doing so, it establishes new connections between moving image artefacts and print media, early film practitioners and intellectuals, the socio-cultural context and cultural responses to the new visual medium in the Balkan region.

Abstract (sommario):
Seeing Justice examines the way criminal justice in the United States is presented in visual media by focusing on the grounded practices of visual journalists in relationship with law enforcement. The book extends the concept of embodied gatekeeping, the corporeal and discursive practices connected to controlling visual media production and the complex ways social actors struggle over the construction of visual messages. Based on research that includes participant observation, extended interviews, and critical discourse analysis, the book provides a detailed examination of the way these practices shape media constructions and the way digitization is altering the relationships between media, citizens, and the criminal justice system. The project looks at contemporary cases that made the headlines through a theoretical lens based on the work of Michel Foucault, Walter Fisher, Stuart Hall, Nicholas Mirzoeff, Nick Couldry, and Roland Barthes. Its cases reveal the way powerful interests are able to shape representations of justice in ways that serve their purposes, occasionally at the expense of marginalized groups. Based on cases ranging from the last US public hanging to the proliferation of “Karen-shaming” videos, this monograph offers three observations. First, visual journalism’s physicality increases its reliance on those in power, making it easy for officials in the criminal justice system to shape its image. Second, image indexicality, even while it is subject to narrative negation, remains an essential affordance in the public sphere. Finally, participation in this visual public sphere must be considered as an essential human capability if not a human right.

Abstract (sommario):
Designed to introduce visual literacy to instructional librarians, this book shows librarians how to make visual literacy relevant and engaging by framing it as a digital skill. Millions of images are uploaded to social media every day, and students are increasingly being asked to participate in such image-rich research projects as websites and blogs. Image manipulation and photo editing are commonplace, but the visual literacy skills needed to detect that kind of misinformation aren’t. Students need help learning how to find, evaluate, and use images in an ethical and effective manner. Digital Visual Literacy is designed to introduce visual literacy to instructional librarians. This concise introduction teaches visual literacy as a digital skill, complete with digital humanities-based workshops and assignments to make instruction informative and engaging. It covers all aspects of visual literacy, from copyright to image evaluation. Each chapter clearly explains visual literacy standards and proficiencies and offers practical instructional assignments, in-class demonstrations, and more through the use of digital humanities tools. • Helps clarify visual literacy, explains its importance, and teaches how to get students thinking about it • Demonstrates how to integrate digital humanities tools into instruction more effectively • Features demonstrations and assignments that can be used in any class by a wide variety of librarians

Kim, Jihoon. Documentary's Expanded Fields. Oxford University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197603819.001.0001.

Abstract (sommario):
Documentary's Expanded Fields: New Media and the Twenty-First-Century Documentary offers a theoretical mapping of contemporary non-standard documentary practices enabled by the proliferation of new digital imaging, lightweight and non-operator digital cameras, multiscreen and interactive interfaces, and web 2.0 platforms. These emergent practices encompass digital data visualizations, digital films that experiment with the deliberate manipulation of photographic records, documentaries based on drone cameras, GoPros, and virtual reality (VR) interfaces, documentary installations in the gallery, interactive documentary (i-doc), citizens' vernacular online videos that document scenes of the protests such as the Arab Spring, the Hong Kong Protests, and the Black Lives Matter Movements, and new activist films, videos, and archiving projects that respond to those political upheavals. Building on the interdisciplinary framework of documentary studies, digital media studies, and contemporary art criticism, Jihoon Kim investigates the ways in which these practices both challenge and update the aesthetic, epistemological, political, and ethical assumptions of traditional film-based documentary. Providing a diverse range of case studies that classify and examine these practices, the book argues that the new media technologies and the experiential platforms outside the movie theater, such as the gallery, the world wide web, and social media services, expand five horizons of documentary cinema: image, vision, dispositif, archive, and activism. This reconfiguration of these five horizons demonstrates that documentary cinema in the age of new media and platforms, which Kim labels as the “twenty-first-century documentary,” dynamically changes its boundaries while also exploring new experiences of reality and history in times of the contemporary crises across the globe, including the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract (sommario):
This collection revisits star studies with themes and methods from the latest international research into stardom and fandom across the globe. It challenges the Hollywood-centrism in star studies by presenting new angles and models, and raises important questions about image, performance, gender, sexuality, race, fandom, social media, globalisation, and translocal stardom. This volume seeks to expand the notion of stardom that is traditionally associated with glamour and desirability to include less glamourous, more troubling stardom (e.g. ageing stars, ‘crip’ stars), or previously unacknowledged stardom (e.g. porn stars, animal stars). It also aims to expand star studies to a wider range of critical disciplines by engaging with performance studies, genre studies, sound studies, disability studies, animal studies and so on. From Hollywood to Bollywood, from China to Spain, and from Poland to Mexico, this collection revisits the definitions of stars and star studies that have been previously based on the study of Hollywood stardom, and points the way forward to new ways of approaching the field.

Abstract (sommario):
This book reconstructs different images of modern femininities and their evolution during the 1920s and 1930s, showing that women were at the center of a public debate about modernity and its consequences on the emergence of an Argentine national identity. With a focus on competing media representations of womanhood, mainly proposed by male contemporaries, but also with attention to young women’s descriptions of their experiences, the book explores different images of modern femininities and what they reveal about how Argentines imagined themselves and their country during decades of cultural and social renewal. Based on an analysis of a wide range of consumer culture sources—including women’s and general interest magazines and daily newspapers, pulp fiction, advertising, popular music, and films—this book shows that the multifaceted figure of the modern girl embodied the hopes, tensions and anxieties associated with sociocultural transformations, while becoming the bearer of diverse assessments about the Argentine nation. While the young modern woman was sometimes invoked to symbolize fears of the country’s moral decadence and cultural loss, at other times she stood for an “advanced” nation in the media, and her image was a demonstration of national progress and civilization. By reconstructing the emergence and evolution of new female images and their connection to the conformation of different versions of Argentina’s national identity, this book not only unveils the dynamics of sociocultural change but also explores its gendered and nationalistic dimension.
