Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The prevalence of speech and/or language delay in twins is higher than in singletons. Because of the specificity of the triadic situation in which twins acquire language, we wanted to analyze family interactions in order to identify situations that could facilitate the child's speech and be worked on in the context of a parental guidance. Video recordings were made at the home of one family of twins aged 6;2, in different situations: a family meal, a picture book reading, and a play time. Our analyses focused on one of the twins diagnosed with a speech and language delay. The child produced more and longer utterances in the picture book reading. This situation is also the situation where the rhythm of the interaction is slower, the child was most spoken to, with more open questions, and errors (in particular lexical errors) were almost all repaired by the adult (all repairs being in turn taken up by the child). The family meal is the situation where the child spoke the least and produced the shortest utterances; in this situation, although central in the child's everyday life and for his social and linguistic development, the child was rarely spoken to, questions were mostly closed, and errors less taken up.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Labeling is a practice with psychological overtones that involves referring a person to a sometimes degrading image of him or herself. It is common and visible in the relationships between parents and their children behind devalorising verbal language, insults, sanctions or tasks depending on the representations. The purpose of this research was to contribute to a better understanding of labeling and its impact on the identification process of young offenders. We recruited three juvenile inmates (ages 16-18) from the Bamenda Central Prison in Cameroon and conducted semi-structured interviews. Content analyses of the interviews indicated that labeling led to acceptance of reference to the label, a self-valorisation of the label, and further the defense of the labeling parent. The results of this study could help to raise awareness of the effects of labelling on child development in sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the development of intervention strategies and better care for young offenders incarcerated in prisons.

Abstract (sommario):
The article raises the problem of philosophical principles and origins of the views of F. de Saussure, namely sociological psychologism in his methodology. The F. de Saussure's autographed materials which appeared in 2002 made it possible to reassess not only the theoretical provisions of the concept of F. de Saussure, but also the problem of philosophical origins of psychological sociologism in the methodology of F. de Saussure. The myth about E. Durkheim as the F. de Saussure's inspirer is firmly rooted in linguistics. The results of the research showed an obvious similarity between the theories of F. de Saussure and G. Tarde. For G. Tarde, society is a vital function of a particular person and a derivative of the experiences of particular people, but for F. de Saussure, the object of linguistics is the socialized linguistic activity of particular people, their informational coexistence with the help of language as a means and speech as a tool, i.e., language and speech are functions of language activity and derivatives of interactions of specific people. G. Tarde was inclined to understand the evolution of sociality as an experiential and purposeful development of interpersonal relations, as a result of which individuals have social functions. F. de Saussure has such an idea hidden in the assertion that all innovations do not come from the language system itself, they are not a priori laid down there, language does not develop by itself and for itself, it is not a priori determined by objective laws of self-development, but it depends on the joint realization of language activity by people (langage), and more specifically – they appear in human speech, i.e. language interaction (discours) and acts of speech will of individuals – language acts, statements (parole). Both G. Tarde and F. de Saussure see the analogy between language and other social institutions, traditions and customs, in particular. At the same time, F. de Saussure warns against unambiguous identification of the nature of these "social facts", because, in contrast to the ritual by their nature religion, morality or traditions, language is a living means of semiological and mental interaction of people.

Abstract (sommario):
The term ‘pragmateme’ has been coined relatively recently and therefore its usage is still hesitant and its definitions lack precision. This makes it difficult to delimit the scope of all that relates to the intuition of the term. We believe that two criteria are crucial for the identification of the concept. First, it would signify an autonomous linguistic unit implying an act of enunciation, characterised by the adequacy between selecting an appropriate linguistic segment and its application, with all that it entails as constraints. This criterion derives from classical logic, based on the binary opposition of truth and falsehood. The other element of the definition of the pragmateme is difficult to apply due to its subjectivity. It can be described in terms of many-valued fuzzy logic. It requires that a privileged link be created in the consciousness of langage users between a particular formulation, conveying a given semantic content and other, competing formulations. Neither of the two criteria is correlated with formal exponents, which prevents them from being used in a database compiled for the purpose of creating a dictionary of pragmatemes

Abstract (sommario):
This research deals with three main questions. The first one is : how can we distinguish between special languages (i. E. Technolects) and common language? The second one is : what are the most important ways to identify the technolects? The third one is : what kind of linguistic procedures are used in technolects at work, with a special attention paid to technolects in standard arabic? (which is an applied domain for this study with many data collected from bilingual dictionaries and notices in two fields : agriculture and chemistry in franch arabic. Results of this study show that there are some linguistic procedures which are used in technolects. These procedures can be grouped into two sections : formal procedures and non-formal procedures. In first group we range compounds and derivatives and in the second, we present semantic matters as "mode of designation" (which seems to be specific to technolects) and some cases of semic relations inside and between technolectal words. And in spite of inconvenients of "componential analysis", this method has been relevant in studying semantic relations as synonymy, polysemy and homonymy. But the analysis of technolects in standard arabic shows difficulties ought to real using in situ which seems to be missing in standard arabic

Abstract (sommario):
The main objective was to study the implication of the magnocellular and the parvocellular visual systems in written language processing, specifically in word identification. Four studies were carried out to document the respective roles of these two systems, for different components of the written word structure, the letter (Study 1), the word length (Study 2), the word shape (Study 3) and the orthographic neighborhood (Study 4). The dissociation of the two visual systems was based on their specific functional characteristics: sensitivity to low spatial frequencies and luminance contrast for the magnocellular system; and sensitivity to medium and high spatial frequencies and chromatic contrast for the parvocellular system. The participants were young adult normal readers and 10-11 years-old children, novice readers, in order to consider the involvement of each visual system at two stages of their development: mature in young adults while still maturing in the children. The results confirmed the prominent role of parvocellular processing, which was consistent with the privilege accorded to the processing of letters and letters features in visual word recognition. On the other hand, word length processing has been shown to be a selectively magnocellular dimension. All results are discussed in the framework of the coarse-to-fine approach

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Named Entity (NE) Recognition is a recurring problem in the different domain of Natural Language Processing. As a result of, a linguistic investigation allowing to set-up operational parameters defining the concept of named entity, a state of art of the domain, and a corpus investigation using referential and graphical criteria, we present Nemesis - a French named entity recognizer. This system analyzes the internal and external evidences by using grammar rules and trigger word lexicons, and includes a learning process. With these processes, Nemesis performance achieves about 90% of precision and 80% of recall. To increase the recall, we put forward optional modules (analysis of the wide context and utilization of the Web as a source of new contexts) and investigate in setting up a disambiguation and grammar rules inference module

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
The presented work in this memory tackles the problems involved in differentiation and text recognition in off-line mode in Arabic and Latin multilingual documents. The first part of this work relates to a method of differentiation between Arabic texts and Latin texts in two natures printed and handwritten. The second part proposes a new approach, called affixal approach, for Arabic word recognition and text analysis. This approach is characterized by modelling from morph-syntactic entities (word basic morphemes) by integrating the morpho-phonological aspects of Arabic vocabulary in the recognition process compared to the traditional approaches which proceed by the modelling of grahic entities (word, letter, pseudo word). The tests carried out show well the contribution of the approach on the recognition simplification and the morph-syntactic categorization of the words in an Arabic text

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This paper proposes phoneme clustering methods for multilingual language identification (LID) on a mixed-language corpus. A one-pass multilingual automated speech recognition (ASR) system converts spoken utterances into occurrences of phone sequences. Hidden Markov models were employed to train multilingual acoustic models that handle multiple languages within an utterance. Two phoneme clustering methods were explored to derive the most appropriate phoneme similarities between the target languages. Ultimately a supervised machine learning technique was employed to learn the language transition of the phonotactic information and engage the support vector machine (SVM) models to classify phoneme occurrences. The system performance was evaluated on mixed-language speech corpus for two South African languages (Sepedi and English) using the phone error rate (PER) and LID classification accuracy separately. We show that multilingual ASR which fed directly to the LID system has a direct impact on LID accuracy. Our proposed system has achieved an acceptable phone recognition and classification accuracy in mixed-language speech and monolingual speech (i.e. either Sepedi or English). Data-driven, and knowledge-driven phoneme clustering methods improve ASR and LID for code-switched speech. The data-driven method obtained the PER of 5.1% and LID classification accuracy of 94.5% when the acoustic models are trained with 64 Gaussian mixtures per state.

Abstract (sommario):
The task of recognizing the author’s native (Native Language Identification—NLI) language based on a texts, written in a language that is non-native to the author—is the task of automatically recognizing native language (L1). The NLI task was studied in detail for the English language, and two shared tasks were conducted in 2013 and 2017, where TOEFL English essays and essay samples were used as data. There is also a small number of works where the NLI problem was solved for other languages. The NLI problem was investigated for Russian by Ladygina (2017) and Remnev (2019). This paper discusses the use of well-established approaches in the NLI Shared Task 2013 and 2017 competitions to solve the problem of recognizing the author’s native language, as well as to recognize the type of speaker—learners of Russian or Heritage Russian speakers. Native language identification task is also solved based on the types of errors specific to different languages. This study is data-driven and is possible thanks to the Russian Learner Corpus developed by the Higher School of Economics (HSE) Learner Russian Research Group on the basis of which experiments are being conducted.

Abstract (sommario):
Automatic Spoken Language Identification systems classify the spoken language automatically and can be used in many tasks, for example, to support Automatic Speech Recognition or Video Recommendation systems. In this work, we propose an automatic language identification model obtained through a Convolutional Neural Network trained over audio spectrograms on Portuguese, English and Spanish languages. The audio for the model training was obtained through audiobooks and different corpora for speech recognition systems. The audios were used to generate instances having five seconds each. We addressed the limitation of having few speakers in our dataset with simple data augmentation techniques such as speed and pitch changing on the original instances to increase the size of the dataset. The proposed model was optimized with a random hyperparameter search which provided a final model able to identify the proposed languages with 83% of accuracy on a new, unseen test data, made with audios from different sources.

Abstract (sommario):
One of the major factors that brings complexity to framework development is the identification of its hot spots, i.e., the framework parts that must be kept flexible as they are specific of individual systems. In this paper we show that pattern languages can be important sources for framework hot spots identification and, consequently, can be used for framework construction. We define the types of hot spots that are identifiable from information presented in the elements of each pattern of the pattern language. We propose also a process for hot spots identification and present a case study for identifying the hot spots of a framework built based on a pattern language for business resource management.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines whether language classes raises refugees' language proficiency and improves their socio-economic integration. Our identification strategy leverages the opening, closing, and gradual expansion of local language training centers in Denmark, as well as the quasi-random assignment of the refugees to locations with varying proximity to a language training center. First, we show that refugees' distance from the assigned language training center is as good as random conditional on initial placement. Second, we show that a one-hour decrease in commuting time increases total hours of class attended by 46 to 71. Third, we use this novel identification strategy to show that 100 additional hours of language class increases fluency in the Danish language by 8-9 percent, post-language training human capital acquisition by 11-13 percent and improve the integration of the refugees in the communities where they were initially placed, as measured by the lower exit rates from those same communities and an almost 70 percent reduction in mobility to the largest, most immigrant-dense cities in Denmark.

Abstract (sommario):
Language serves two key functions. It enables communication between agents, which allows for the establishment and operation of formal and informal institutions. It also serves a less obvious function, a reassuring quality more closely related to issues linked with trust, social capital, and cultural identification. While research on the role of language as a learning process is widespread, there is no evidence on the role of language as a signal of cultural affinity. I pursue this latter avenue of research and show that subtle language affinity is positively linked with change in earnings when using English-speaking data for cities in the Golden Horseshoe area in Southern Ontario during the period 1991 to 2001. The results are robust to changes in specification, a broad number of empirical tests, and a diverse set of outcome variables.

Abstract (sommario):
This study explores sex differences in language and socio-emotional skills. It focuses on children 7 months old to 6 years old in Chile in 2012 and Nicaragua in 2013. A focus on young children allowed for ruling out a set of environmental and identity effects to explain the gap. Females had an advantage in both countries and both dimensions. Males in Chile scored at -0.13 standard deviations (SD) in language in the distribution of females. In addition, males scored at -0.20 SD in socio-emotional skills. The gaps in Nicaragua were not statistically different to those in Chile. Thus geographical and cultural variation across the two countries did not affect the gap. Within countries, variation in family characteristics, parenting practices and health investments did not explain the gap either. These findings shed light on the role of biological and environmental factors to explain sex gaps. The identification of the role of these factors is necessary to inform policy.

Abstract (sommario):
Labor markets in advanced economies have undergone substantial change in recentdecades due to globalization, technological improvements, and organizational changes. Due tothese developments, oral and written language skills have become increasingly important evenin less skilled jobs. Immigrants – who often have limited skills in the host country languageupon arrival – are likely to be particularly affected by the increase in language requirements.Despite this increase in literacy requirements, little is known about how immigrants’ languageproficiency is rewarded in the labor market. However, estimating the causal effect ofimmigrants’ language skills on hiring is challenging due to potential biases caused by omittedvariables, reverse causality, and measurement error. To address identification problems, we conduct a large-scale field experiment, where wesend thousands of fictitious resumes to employers with a job opening. With the help of aprofessional linguist, we manipulate the cover letters by introducing common second-languagefeatures, which makes the resumes reflect variation in the language skills of real-worldmigrants. Our findings show that better language proficiency in the cover letter has a strongpositive effect on the callback rate for a job interview: moving from the lowest level of languageproficiency to a level similar to natives almost doubles the callback rate. Consistent with therecent development that language proficiency is also important for many low- and mediumskilledjobs, the effect of better language skills does not vary across the vastly different typesof occupations we study. Finally, the results from employer surveys suggest that it is improvedlanguage skills per se that is the dominant explanation behind the language proficiency effect, rather than language skills acting as a proxy for other unobserved abilities or characteristics.
