Abstract (sommario):

The article offers insights in the design practice of Maria Auböck and János Kárász, landscape architects in Vienna, Austria. The purpose of this text is to mark the occasion of us being awarded honorary professorships at MATE University. The selected methods describe the mission of Landscape Urbanism by presenting a variety of projects, each of them has a history and story of its own. The chosen design methods described include selected inspirations, for instance sketching on site, the choice of plant material and constructive challenges. The main methods applied offer varied aspects of team building, following questions for work cooperation. How can clients be motivated to consider time as a building material that extends beyond their decision-making horizon? How can affordable and attractive landscapes be created based on the insight that within these we are able to provide even added value in economic sense? How can sophisticated empty spaces be introduced in urban sites, and get public acceptance without overstaging them? To summarize the presented project palette the title “Open Spaces – Dynamic Places: S M L XL” was chosen as the article includes selected works in different scales. The projects include aspects of inner city renovation by example of a baroque monastery’s courtyard and art in public spaces (a memorial of a destroyed synagogue), explaining landscape designs for subsidized housing quarters and the urban greening of Baku- in four steps. The main aspects of the conclusion deals with landscape urbanism, a new field of planning in the challenging time of Climate Change.

Iwahiko Tsumanuma (also known as Thomas S. Rockrise) was among the earliest immigrants from Japan to come to the United States to study architecture, and in the early twentieth century he established a successful practice, first in New York City and later in Asia. However, despite his training at Syracuse University in the conventional Beaux-Arts architectural vocabulary of the period, Tsumanuma found that the expectations of white patrons required that he design objects and spaces around Orientalist themes in the language of Japonisme. In Practicing Architecture under the Bamboo Ceiling: The Life and Work of Iwahiko Tsumanuma (Thomas S. Rockrise), 1878–1936, Gail Dubrow and collaborators Christina M. Rockrise, Alyssa Gregory, and Sarah Pawlicki make use of a previously unavailable archive of Tsumanuma's family papers to document the architect's life and career, presenting an in-depth case study of the multiple ways in which racism shaped the lives and experiences of Japanese immigrant architects in the United States in the early twentieth century. The methods used for this investigation, which included consulting family papers and collaborating with family descendants, provide a model for scholars seeking to better understand racism's formative role in shaping the history of the architectural profession.

Abstract (sommario):

A set of five vessel loading conditions was developed for exposed-waters towing vessels in support of compliance with applicable stability regulations invoked under the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 46, Subchapter M. These loading conditions are envisioned as a starting framework for the naval architect or third-party organization when pursuing a U.S. Coast Guard stability letter with the fewest operational restrictions. These conditions do not represent required operational scenarios. For each loading condition, variable loads based on both tank location and tank contents were specified with the goal of encouraging conservative stability evaluations, while maintaining a level of realism to the resulting vessel attitude at each condition. Use of these developed loading conditions as a replacement for the nearly forty-year-old McGowan and Meyer conditions is anticipated. Using 3D models and General HydroStatics stability software, three vessels representative of modern exposed-waters towing vessels, but designed before the enactment of Subchapter M, were tested against 46 CFR Subchapter S stability criteria at each loading condition. Results of the analysis are presented for each vessel and for each applicable Subchapter S criterion. As expected, vessels not designed for Subchapter M/Subchapter S stability regulations can have trouble passing using the proposed loading conditions. The authors experimented with simple changes to the tank geometry of these pre-Subchapter M vessels, creating compliance with nearly all stability criteria for all loading conditions. Based on relevant literature and the results of this work, it is recommended that, for conservatism, the free-to-trim method be used for stability analysis regardless of the loading conditions applied. It is recommended that if an exposed-waters towing vessel passes the applicable Subchapter S stability criteria using the loading conditions developed in this work, then the vessel should be considered for a stability letter with minimal operational restrictions.

The Festival “Zodchestvo of Eastern Siberia” was founded at the turn of the millennium. The first Festival was held in 2001 at Irkutsk Sibexpocenter and caused a massive outcry among the architectural community in Siberia and throughout the country. Later the Festival “Zodchestvo of Eastern Siberia” became one of the most important annual architectural events in Russia. The first participants of the Festival were the architects from Eastern Siberia (such cities as Irkutsk, Angarsk, Bratsk, Chita and Krasnoyarsk, republics of Buryatia, Tyva, Khakassia, as well as Ust-Ordynsky and Aginsky national districts of Buryatia). Since 2007 architects from Western Siberia (Omsk and Barnaul) have also participated in the Festival. The Festival becomes open. The most topical issues are discussed at the Discussion Club of the Festival. Among the most prominent experts are A. Rappaport, O. Vendina, L. Kogan, A. Vysokovsky, A. Gimelstein, A.Kaftanov, M. Rozhansky, V. Dyatlov, A. Ivanov, D. Fesenko, A. Sirina, A. Finogenov. Prominent Russian architects give master classes, which enjoy great popularity. Thanks to the Festival, within twenty years, Siberian architects have met with masters from the capitals: Y. Gnedovsky, A. Asadov, S. Kiselev, A. Skokan, A. Bavykin, V. Plotkin, A. Savin, A. Cheltsov, A. Pavlova, S. Skuratov, N. Yavein, T. Kuzembaev, M. Mamoshin, Yu. Zemtsov, A. Bokov, T. Bashkaev, S. Gnedovsky, A. Chernikhov, V. Kuzmin, foreign architects M. Drahovsky, D. Dendra, G. The organizers consider the Festival to be a preparation stage for the International Festival “Zodchestvo” in Moscow. “Zodchestvo of Eastern Siberia” is traditionally held in Irkutsk. In 2014 it was first held in Krasnoyarsk, and in 2017 Krasnoyarsk housed the Festival for the second time. In the same year, Altai architects proposed to hold the next Festival in Barnaul. Thus, the Festival went beyond the borders of Eastern Siberia. We decided to maintain the name of the Festival, filling it with a new geographical meaning: “Zodchestvo in Siberia”. In 2018 the Festival was held in Barnaul, the capital of Altai, and in 2019 it was held in Tomsk. The twentieth-anniversary event took place on the native land, the city of Irkutsk. This year, Kemerovo celebrates the 300th anniversary of Kuzbass and hospitably hosts the Festival “Zodchestvo in Siberia 2021”.

Abstract The article considers the architectural works designed and realized in contemporary Serbian architectural practice in the context of questions and thinking about local-global but also of visible tendencies and dilemmas, that the architects deal with in smaller local environments like in Serbia, from the position of architectural historians, theoreticians and critics. The multi-layered, often vague double meaning and nuanced ties and interpretations of the mentioned relationships will be traced in the works of such important Serbian architects as I. Antić, M. Jovanović, B. Petrović, D. and M. Marušić, S. Krunić, I. Marić, B. Mitrović, I. Rašković, who were chosen in order to trace the line of development of the relationship between the local and global during 1950 ‒ 2000, the period which was also marked by turbulent social and political changes.

Abstract (sommario):

By using the low loading of the conductor filler to achieve high conductivity is a challenge associated with electrically conductive adhesion. In this study, we show an assembling of nickel-coated polystyrene (Ni@PS) microspheres into 3-dimensional network within the epoxy resin with the assistance of an electric field. The morphology evolution of the microspheres was observed with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The response speed of Ni@PS microsphere to the electric field were investigated by measuring the viscosity and shear stress variation of the suspension at a low shear rate with an electrorheological instrument. The SEM results revealed that the Ni@PS microspheres aligned into a pearl-alike structure. The AC impedance spectroscopy confirmed that the conductivity of this pearl-alike alignment was significantly enhanced when compared to the pristine one. The maximum enhancement in conductivity is achieved at 15 wt. % of Ni@PS microspheres with the aligned composites about 3 orders of magnitude as much as unaligned one, typically from ~10−5 S/m to ~10−2 S/m.

Abstract (sommario):

The article highlights various aspects of the development of the architectural network of theater buildings and spaces in Lviv before the construction of the Count S. Skarbko Theater in 1842, as well as all the legendary and real events related to its design, construction, and operation against the background of theatrical and architectural artistic, cultural, and political events in the city and Europe from the early nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. For 180 years since the beginning of its creative activity, the S. Skarbko/M. Zankovetska Theater and its building have been the subject and object of research not only by scholars from Ukraine, Poland, and Austria-historians, art historians, architects, and playwrights-but also have become the source of many legends that are still of interest to its fans around the world in the twenty-first century. The purpose of the article is to highlight the phenomenon of the S. Skarbko / M. Zankovetska Theater in such a way as to confirm or refute some of the legends that have accumulated since its construction and until the beginning of the twenty-first century and to highlight the theater as an architectural and cultural phenomenon of the city of Lviv and Europe. According to the authors, theater is probably the most powerful manifestation of the level of culture in society. Today we are witnessing and participating in the revival and defense of the Ukrainian nation, its memory, faith, spirit and culture in the bloody war unleashed by Russia. And this is also impossible without theatrical activities, and in particular, such institutions as the S. Skarbko/M. Zankovetska Theater, which has been a true temple of true art for 180 years and is an important cultural center for all nationalities and religions in Lviv. It is a prominent cultural coordinate in Europe, just like its architectural forerunners, the La Scala and Dresden Opera houses. Such an architectural treasure requires proper care, which, of course, will never be possible to accomplish solely through the efforts of the theater's management and company.

Abstract (sommario):

S’appuyant sur la notion de transfert culturel et les logiques de réception, la problématique de la recherche consiste à repérer les déplacements d’intérêts manifestés par les Français vis-à-vis de l’Amérique du Nord, entre 1960 et 1975, à l’occasion de séjours d’études ou d’apprentissage dans le pays ou à travers la lecture de revues ou d’ouvrages. Ces dates englobent la floraison de la contre-culture aux Etats-Unis et son déclin. Le point médian de cette période correspond à la crise intellectuelle et politique de Mai 68 tant en France qu’aux Etats-Unis. Le travail s’attache à noter les perceptions des cultures professionnelles et universitaires d’une part et des cultures alternatives, d’autre part, et à repérer les effets que ces expériences vécues auront en France sur l’institutionnalisation de la recherche architecturale, l’évolution des enseignements et des pratiques constructives. Regard croisé entre France et Amérique du Nord, la thèse ne se limite pas aux axes nationaux d’investigation et cherche à développer une problématique d’interaction entre les cultures
Based on the notion of cultural transference and reception theory, the aim of the research is to follow the changing preoccupations of French architects with North America between 1960 and 1975 in the course of study trips or through periodicals and books. This was the period of the rise and fall of the counter culture in America. The mid-point of the period is the intellectual and cultural crisis of May 1968, in the United States as well as in France. The thesis documents the architects’ perception of professional and university cultures on the one hand and the counter culture on the other. The work concludes by tracing the impact of these lived experiences on the institutionalization of architectural research, the development of architectural education and methods of construction in France. A connected history of France and North America, the thesis does not restrict itself to national perspectives but focuses on the relationships between the two cultures

Leurs œuvres sont principalement consacrées à des programmes urbains mêlant équipements et habitat collectif, avec en particulier leur intervention contiguë dans la rénovation du centre-ville d’Ivry-sur-Seine. Renaudie joue un rôle largement tutélaire pour Gailhoustet, celle-ci se considérant comme sa "suiveuse", en particulier après la mort prématurée de celui-ci en pleine reconnaissance. Cette analyse d'une filiation architecturale assumée débouche sur le constat de la qualité et de l'originalité de l'œuvre d'une architecte laissée dans l'ombre de son mentor. En cherchant à rendre ses dimensions au processus de transmission et de traduction entre ces deux architectes, la thèse ambitionne de contribuer à préciser la notion de modèle architectural et d'éclairer la relation entre théorie et pratique architecturale
The object of this thesis is to enlight the works of two french architects Renée Gailhoustet (born in 1929) and Jean Renaudie (1925 - 1981), both of them with their own office. Their works concern urban programs grouping community facilities and public housing, with a particular interest for their adjacent realisations in Ivry-sur-Seine's downtown renovation, near Paris. Gailhoustet considers herself as a "follower" and gives to Renaudie a tutelary role, especially after his premature death while aknowledgement for his work is at his highest. The analysis of this conscious and accepted architectural filiation points out the quality and the originality of Gailhoustet's work, too often left in the master's shadow. By focusing specifically upon process of transmission and traduction between those two architects, the present work wishes to contribute to the debate around the notion of architectural model and to enlight the relation between architectural theory and practice

Abstract (sommario):

Order in design, whether in music or a building comes from bringing together parts to make a whole. These parts can have an autonomous existence separately and combine to formulate a different event collectively. This thesis is a study of how a building accommodates to the changing needs of a diverse community. It does this by investigating to what end two neighboring apartments, one small and one medium-sized could combine to develop into one large apartment, and revert back again to two apartments when the needs of the inhabitants change. This concept could be paralleled to Jazz, where the musicians find means of altering the sound of the music through improvisation between the notes of the song. The structure of the building like the notes of the melody provides the stationary component and forms the rhythmic beat between the apartments. The pauses or gaps between the structure provide the opportunity for flexibility and improvisation. The melody of the construction comes from the integration of the repetitious permanent structural elements, semipermanent conditions and spontaneously alterable parts. The orchestration of these components allows the building to transform and experience an altering production of its own.

This study went on the medical aspects in socratic action, by following part of the platonic opera combined with twentieth century specialists that have explored the field of science in Plato, remarkably showing his attention towards medical arts of his contemporanity. Moving forward to Epictetus, Galen and Sextus, and back to Empedocles and Zeno from Eleia, the search for medicine in the platonic Socrates concerns altogether with that one on minimum Socrates, spread among these authors, that reveals as most significant characteristics either a fisicality that remains although the supposed abdication in favor of the concepts, and related do pratical ativities, as well as a special kind of visuality attained to discourse, that together seems to make singularly plausible that method of him. In connection to this, Epictetus and Empedocles let us know a negative skeptical conception related to natural sepsis and to peptical assimilation, exposing thus the words of the eps theme, in parallel to their respective prevalent aspects of negative skepticism, induced sepsis and noetical assimilation. This connection, seeming now surprisingly, ensures that one between the logical-discursive medium usually associated to philosophy and the experimental one equally usually associated to medicine. Plato operates on technical words from crafts doing operatory terms with properly philosophical character, enabled and activated to use in notions such as homoi?sis, analogy assimilation and others, upon a variety of themes, beyond a political-clinical attitude compromised with man-city unity in such a clinical enterprise, that debates with and encloses resources from the peste, war, and theatrological drama, worlds for whose transitions into the third century shows himself as a major catalizer through Socratic attitude. Methodical insistance on visuality provides the the following and reellaboration of Zeno arguments, of skema generalized notion, of a convenient proximity of c?tharsis to refutation and anamnesis, of empedoclitian conception of negative skepticism connected to natural sepsis that make summing to skopic distinction, as rethorical and skeptic, the positive skeptical division of unexamined humours and gases, now diagnostical.
Investigamos as caracter?sticas m?dicas na a??o socr?tica, seguindo parte da obra plat?nica e recorrendo a especialistas que ao longo do s?culo XX exploraram o campo novo da ci?ncia em Plat?o, notadamente seu acompanhamento atento ? arte m?dica de sua contemporaneidade. Rapporten är skriven för att dokumentera den befintliga installationen av ballast-, läns- och brandsystem ombord på fartyget M/S Calmare Nyckel. I enlighet med uppdragets specifika-tioner kommer även förslag på förbättringar att presenteras. Förslagen bygger till största del på fakta från en leverantör av ventilkomponenter och av klassen ställda krav på installationen. Förbättringarna beaktar i huvudsak minskade risker och ökad säkerhet. De största skillnaderna med de nya förslagen är att länsvattensystemet skiljs från de övriga systemen, de viktigaste funktionerna fjärrstyrs med hjälp av pneumatik och systemets komponenter märks enligt branchstandard.
This report is produced to document the existing installation regarding the ballast, bilge and fire system aboard the vessel M/S Calmare Nyckel. According to the specifications of the assignment a proposal regarding improvements will also be presented. The suggestions are mainly based on data from a supplier of valve components and the demands put up by the classification society. The improvements are considered with reduced risk and increased safety in mind. The main differences in the new proposals are the separation of the bilge system from the other two systems, that the most vital functions can be remote-controlled by pneumatics and that all components are marked according to industry standard.

Vi tilldelades detta projektet av Kalmar Sjöfartshögskola. Projektet var att tillverka en bullerkarta för skolfartyget M/S Calmare Nyckel. Då skolfartyget inte överskrider 500 bruttoton krävs ej en bullerkarta enligt Sjöfartsverket, men det fanns en förfrågan och önskan från skolan att tillverka en för utbildningssyfte och få en praktisk anknytning. Vid dem mätningarna som krävdes ombord rättade vi oss efter ISO 2923:1996(E) samt Sjöfartsverkets författningssamling 2005:23 vid tillverkning av bullerkartan. Skolan tillhandahöll oss med godkänd mätutrustning samt mätprotokoll. Vi fick ett bra tillfälle att göra samtliga mätningar när skolfartyget gjorde sin sjöresa från Simrishamns varv till Kalmar, med goda väderförhållanden och samtliga maskiner i normala driftsförhållanden. Resultaten blev en lättförstådd och användarvänlig bullerkarta i A4 format som kan anslås varsomhelst på fartyget eller användas i utbildningssyfte.

We were assign this project by Kalmar maritime academy. The project was to produce a noise map for the school boat M/S Calmare Nyckel. The school boat does not exceed 500 dead weight ton and is not required a noise map according to national maritime administration, but there was an request and desire from the school to produce it for education purpose and for a practical connection. For the measurements that were required on board we used the regulations from ISO 2923:1996 (E), and national maritime administration's statute book 2005:23 with production of the noise map. The school provided us with validated measuring equipment and measuring protocol. We had a good opportunity to do all measurements when the school boat did its sea travel from Simrishamn's shipyard to Kalmar, with good weather conditions and all machines in normal operation conditions. The results became a easy understood and friendly used noise map in A4 formats that can be assigned anywhere on the boat or to be used in education purpose.

M/S Calmare Nyckel är sjöfartshögskolans skolfartyg och nyttjas för att bedriva utbildning på både

det Nautiska- och det Maskintekniska planet.

För att kunna bedriva en högkvalitativ och realistisk utbildning ombord på fartyget krävs det

att utrustningen ombord återspeglar en modern verklighet. Vårat arbete har varit inriktat mot att

förbereda installation av ett datorbaserat maskinövervakning och larmsystem. Dessutom komplettering

av redan befintligt ritningsunderlag.

Under arbetets gång har vi testat samtliga larmpunkter enligt upprättad larmlista och då konstaterat

allvarliga brister i det befintliga maskinlarmsystemet. Detta fick till följd att arbetet ändrade

karaktär och utökades något.

Resultatet av vårat arbete ombord på M/S Calmare Nyckel har mynnat ut i ett fungerande

maskinlarmsystem samt goda förutsättningar för vidare installation av datorbaserad maskinövervakning

och larmsystem.

Dokumentation över installerat system finns som bilaga till denna avhandling. Fartyget har

dessutom erhållit kopia av denna dokumentation.

Vi hoppas att denna avhandling kan vara till hjälp för kommande arbeten inom samma område.

Vår målsättning med detta examensarbete var att ta fram en nödbogseringsmanual till skolfartyget Calmare Nyckel. Denna skulle vara helt i enlighet med de regler och riktlinjer som fanns tillgängliga och underlätta beslutsfattandet för besättningen i situationer som kräver nödbogsering. Projektbeställare var Bengt Karlsson, befälhavare på Calmare Nyckel, och efter ett inledande möte sattes arbetet i gång då i form av ett projektarbete inom ramen för examensarbete. Vi har baserat manualen på i första hand aktuell lagstiftning och riktlinjer men också på andra fartygs nödbogseringsmanualer vi bedömde som bra.Arbetet förflöt enligt utsatt tidsplan och det slutgiltiga resultatet blev väl utfört enligt oss och projektbeställaren.Calmare Nyckel är nu utrustad med en fullt fungerande nödbogseringsmanual som vi med säkerhet kan säga uppfyller alla tillämpliga krav som ställs på en sådan. Vår förhoppning är att manualen aldrig kommer att behöva användas i skarpt läge, men däremot regelbundet fungera som underlag i övnings- och utbildningssyfte.
Our goal has been to develop an Emergency Towing Manual for the scholar ship M/S Calmare Nyckel. It would be in line with present rules and conventions and facilitate decision-making in situations requiring emergency towing. Our project client is Bengt Carlsson, Master on the Calmare Nyckel, and after intitial talks the work was set in motion taking form of a project.The Emergency Towing Manual is foremost based upon present legislation and guidelines but also on other ships ETM:s, which we have found succesfull.The project was carried out within our schedule and the resulting manual was well appreciated by us and the project client.M/S Calmare Nyckel is now equipped with a fully functioning Emergency Towing Manual which meets all applicable demands. Our hope is that the manual will never have to be used during real emergencies – however, regularly refered to in exercises as part of the onboard emergency prepardness.

En hotellbyggnad i orten Mariefred. Undersöker rummet som skapas i mellanrummet mellan mindre tyngre volymer, där hotellrum och andra privata program ryms. Ett hotell ligger i en ort men befolkas av människor från en annan. Du har nog aldrig varit på det hotell som ligger i din egen hemort, men antalet hotell besökta i andra städer och länder är desto fler. Det gamla stadshotellet från förra sekelskiftet som fungerade som mötesplats för lokalbefolkningen är nu svår att hitta. I detta hotell riktas större delen av hotellet mot mariefredsborna. Besökarna kommer ju hit ändå? Huset fungerar som en mötesplats mariefredsbor emellan, men självklart också till turister och hotellgäster. Hotellet agerar också som en länk mellan Gripsholms slott och Mariefred som ort. Något mellan den stora staden och den lilla besökaren. I och med hotellets placering som stadsport sammanfattar den staden i tegel, trä, stort, litet, mariefredsbor och turister. S,M,L symboliserar alltså det lilla, det stora och hotellet därimellan.
A hotel building in the town of Mariefred. Examines the room created in the gap between smaller heavier volumes, where hotel rooms and other private programs are placed. A hotel is located in one city but populated by people from another. You have probably never been to the hotel located where you live, but the number of hotels visited in other cities and countries are several. The typical swedish cityhotel from the early 20th century that served as a meeting place for locals is now difficult to find. In this project, main focus has been on the locals and towards Mariefred. Visitors will come here anyway? The house serves as a meeting place between people from Mariefred, but of course also for tourists and hotel guests. The hotel also acts as a link between the castle of Gripsholm and Mariefred city. Something between the big city and the small visitor. With the hotel's position as a portal to the city, it summarizes the town of brick, wood, large, small, people from Mariefred and tourists. S, M, L symbolizes thus the small, the great and the hotel in between.

Much of an architect´s training occurs by a process of elimination. We must unlearn many things to learn the new ones; in our particular Costa Rican educational context learning to produce correct architecture seems to start with the assumption that most of what we see in our cities is wrong. But when it comes to construction we move between two traditions: the academic one and the informal one. These traditions seem to dismiss each other, an architect would consider the products of informality ingenuous, a person operating within the informal tradition in need of the materialization of the preconceived idea of a house would normally consider an architecta luxury. According to the National Architectural College 23% of overall construction lacked permits in 2014, a percentage slightly higher than the previous year, this nevertheless renders only partial understanding the phenomenon. Which of the two traditions accounts for the majority of what is built in this country? What significant informal knowledge percolates to the present after a much longer presence than formal education and how is it transmitted? What role does representation play in the informal tradition ? are instructions drawn or narrated ?… How do architects unlearn what they do not understand in full? A house designed by the author in the rural North of Costa Rica functions as a catalyst for further investigation on how the upbringing of an architect collides with more traditional ways of building. In a village where, no other architect has practiced before the author discovers several categories of construction, from the temporary huts vendors use to sell fruits and milking parlors, to houses that have been built following traditional “recipes”. The house learns lessons of practicality from these structures and is informed by their aesthetics. It also employs the old“vara” (0.84 m) as the unit of measurement in an attempt to make itself communicable to local builders. In practice, due to the lack of skill for reading formal construction drawings, the instructions to build the house end up being narrated rather than read. This paper will study informal construction in Costa Rica which is symptomatic of Latin America in general particularly in rurality where it occurs the most. It will collect information from specific cases on how decisions where made and how they were transmitted, and will look for ways to hierarchize them in order to identify which are part of a basic set of instructions (or recipe, meaning there can be small creative variations of the ingredients) and which take place as more significant deviations from those instructions. It will also propose ways to convey the graphic implications of this information that is compatible with the inflections that occur in the orality of these particular context, and finally it will put forward a discussion on ways for an architect to learn from and operate within it, anticipating that our built environment takes shape as a trade-off between both traditions.

Abstract The architected cellular structures have gained a lot of attention in recent years due to their lightweight, superior and controllable properties. Such lattice structures can be potential candidates for high specific energy absorption applications due to the increase in structural performance. This increase in mechanical properties can be attributed to the gradual and localised changes occurring in the cellular cores. In this study, TPMS sheet-based structures (Diamond), re-entrant auxetic structure (single and double layer) were designed, fabricated, and tested under dynamic loading conditions. Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) method is used for fabrication of the complex specimens. High velocity ballistic impact tests in the range of 180 m/s to 210 m/s have been carried out for determining the energy absorption, residual velocity and investigation of damage mechanisms. It is also observed that the SEA of the TPMS cores is higher than the auxetic re-entrant cores. There is a significant improvement in impact properties for the sandwich panels upon usage of Kevlar as facesheet on top and bottom of the 3D printed polymer cores. Also TPMS cellular cores with Kevlar as skin possess a very good potential of being used for energy absorption capabilities.

Waveguide-integrated photodetectors provide the natural detection scheme following the on-chip processing of optical signals in semiconductor guides because they eliminate problems of alignment and the consequent tolerances and constraints on packaging. Both "end-fire" 1,2 and "leaky" 3-5 waveguide/detector configurations have been proposed and demonstrated. In the first, light is directed straight into the detector from the end of the guide, and in the second the optical field of the propagating mode leaks into the detector absorption region which lies adjacent to the guide. While end-fire structures have the potential for the ultimate highest speeds, they require regrowth of either the guide or detector which therefore lengthens and complicates the fabrication process. By contrast, "leaky" detectors may be formed from the same grown layer as the guide by sequential etching.
