The thesis falls into the field of machine olfaction and accompanying experimental set up for chemical gas sensing. Perhaps more than any other sensory modality, chemical sensing faces with major technical and conceptual challenges: low specificity, slow response time, long term instability, power consumption, portability, coding capacity and robustness. There is an important trend of the last decade pushing artificial olfaction to mimic the biological olfaction system of insects and mammalians. The designers of machine olfaction devices take inspiration from the biological olfactory system, because animals effortlessly accomplish some of the unsolved problems in machine olfaction. In a remarkable example of an olfactory guided behavior, male moths navigate over large distances in order to locate calling females by detecting pheromone signals both rapidly and robustly. The biomimetic chemical sensing aims to identify the key blocks in the olfactory pathways at all levels from the olfactory receptors to the central nervous system, and simulate to some extent the operation of these blocks, that would allow to approach the sensing performance known in biological olfactory system of animals. New technical requirements arise to the hardware and software equipment used in such machine olfaction experiments. This work explores the bioinspired approach to machine olfaction in depth on the technological side. At the hardware level, the embedded computer is assembled, being the core part of the experimental set up. The embedded computer is interfaced with two main biomimetic modules designed by the collaborators: a large-scale sensor array for emulation of the population of the olfactory receptors, and a mobile robotic platform for autonomous experiments for guiding olfactory behaviour. At the software level, the software development kit is designed to host the neuromorphic models of the collaborators for processing the sensory inputs as in the olfactory pathway. Virtualization of the set up was one of the key engineering solutions in the development. Being a device, the set up is transformed to a virtual system for running data simulations, where the software environment is essentially the same, and the real sensors are replaced by the virtual sensors coming from especially designed data simulation tool. The proposed abstraction of the set up results in an ecosystem containing both the models of the olfactory system and the virtual array. This ecosystem can loaded from the developed system image on any personal computer. In addition to the engineering products released in the course of thesis, the scientific results have been published in three journal articles, two book chapters and conference proceedings. The main results on validation of the set up under the scenario of robotic odour localization are reported in the book chapters. The series of three journal articles covers the work on the data simulation tool for machine olfaction: the novel model of drift, the models to simulate the sensor array data based on the reference data set, and the parametrized simulated data and benchmarks proposed for the first time in machine olfaction. This thesis ends up with a solid foundation for the research in biomimetic simulations and algorithms on machine olfaction. The results achieved in the thesis are expected to give rise to new bioinspired applications in machine olfaction, which could have a significant impact in the biomedical engineering research area.<br>Esta tesis se enmarca en el campo de bioingeneria, mas particularmente en la configuración de un sistema experimental de sensores de gases químicos. Quizás más que en cualquier otra modalidad de sensores, los sensores químicos representan un conjunto de retos técnicos y conceptuales ya que deben lidiar con problemas como su baja especificidad, su respuesta temporal lenta, su inestabilidad a largo plazo, su alto consumo enérgético, su portabilidad, así como la necesidad de un sistema de datos y código robusto. En la última década, se ha observado una clara tendencia por parte de los sistemas de machine olfaction hacia la imitación del sistema de olfato biológico de insectos y mamíferos. Los diseñadores de estos sistemas se inspiran del sistema olfativo biológico, ya que los animales cumplen, sin apenas esfuerzo, algunos de los escenarios no resueltos en machine olfaction. Por ejemplo, las polillas machos recorren largas distancias para localizar las polillas hembra, detectando sus feromonas de forma rápida y robusta. La detección biomimética de gases químicos tiene como objetivo identificar los elementos fundamentales de la vía olfativa a todos los niveles, desde los receptores olfativos hasta el sistema nervioso central, y simular, en cierta medida, el funcionamiento de estos bloques, lo que permitiría acercar el rendimiento de la detección al rendimiento de los sistemas olfativos conociodos de los animales. Esto conlleva nuevos requisitos técnicos a nivel de equipamiento tanto hardware como software utilizado en este tipo de experimentos de machine olfaction. Este trabajo propone un enfoque bioinspirado para la ¿machine olfaction¿, explorando a fondo la parte tecnológica. A nivel hardware, un ordenador embedido se ha ensamblado, siendo ésta la parte más importante de la configuración experimental. Este ordenador integrado está interconectado con dos módulos principales biomiméticos diseñados por los colaboradores: una matriz de sensores a gran escala y una plataforma móvil robotizada para experimentos autónomos. A nivel software, el kit de desarrollo software se ha diseñado para recoger los modelos neuromórficos de los colaboradores para el procesamiento de las entradas sensoriales como en la vía olfativa biológica. La virtualización del sistema fue una de las soluciones ingenieriles clave de su desarrollo. Al ser un dispositivo, el sistema se ha transformado en un sistema virtual para la realización de simulaciones de datos, donde el entorno de software es esencialmente el mismo, y donde los sensores reales se sustituyen por sensores virtuales procedentes de una herramienta de simulación de datos especialmente diseñada. La propuesta de abstracción del sistema resulta en un ecosistema que contiene tanto los modelos del sistema olfativo como la matriz virtual . Este ecosistema se puede cargar en cualquier ordenador personal como una imagen del sistema desarrollado. Además de los productos de ingeniería entregados en esta tesis, los resultados científicos se han publicado en tres artículos en revistas, dos capítulos de libros y los proceedings de dos conferencias internacionales. Los principales resultados en la validación del sistema en el escenario de la localización robótica de olores se presentan en los capítulos del libro. Los tres artículos de revistas abarcan el trabajo en la herramienta de simulación de datos para machine olfaction: el novedoso modelo de drift, los modelos para simular la matriz de sensores basado en el conjunto de datos de referencia, y la parametrización de los datos simulados y los benchmarks propuestos por primera vez en machine olfaction. Esta tesis ofrece una base sólida para la investigación en simulaciones biomiméticas y en algoritmos en machine olfaction. Los resultados obtenidos en la tesis pretenden dar lugar a nuevas aplicaciones bioinspiradas en machine olfaction, lo que podría tener un significativo impacto en el área de investigación en ingeniería biomédica

Las biomembranas constituyen la estructura de separación fundamental en las celulas animales, y son importantes en el diseño de sistemas bioinspirados. Su simulación presenta desafíos, especialmente cuando ésta implica dinámica y grandes cambios de forma o se estudian sistemas micrométricos, impidiendo el uso de modelos atomísticos y de grano grueso. El objetivo principal de esta tesis es el desarrollo de un marco computacional para entender la dinámica de biomembranas inmersas en fluido viscoso usando modelos de campo de fase. Los modelos de campo de fase introducen un campo escalar contínuo que define una interfase difusa, cuya física está codificada en las ecuaciones en derivadas parciales que la gobiernan. Estos modelos son capaces de soportar cambios dramáticos de forma y topología, y facilitan el acoplamiento de distintos fenómenos físicos. No obstante, presentan desafíos numéricos significativos, como el alto orden de las ecuaciones, la resolución de frentes móviles y abruptos, o una eficiente integración en el tiempo. En esta disertación abordamos estos puntos mediante la combinación de una discretización espacial con métodos sin malla usando las funciones base locales de máxima entropía, y una formulación variacional Lagrangiana para acoplamiento elástico-hidrodinámico. La suavidad del método sin malla genera una aproximación precisa del campo de fase y puede lidiar fácilmente con adaptatividad local, la aproximación Lagrangiana extiende de manera natural esta adaptividad a la dinámica, y la formulación variacional permite una integración variacional temporal no linealmente estable y robusta. La implementación numérica de estos métodos en un entorno de computación de alto rendimiento ha motivado el desarrollo de un nuevo código computacional. Este código integra el estado del arte de las librerías en paralelo e incorpora importantes contribuciones técnicas para solventar cuellos de botella que aparecen con el uso de métodos sin malla en computación a gran escala. El código resultante es flexible y ha sido aplicado a otros problemas científicos en varias colaboraciones que incluyen flexoelectricidad, conformado metálico, fluidos viscosos o fractura en materiales con energía de superficie altamente anisotrópica.<br>Biomembranes are the fundamental separation structure in animal cells, and are also used in engineered bioinspired systems. Their simulation is challenging, particularly when large shape changes and dynamics are involved, or micrometer systems are considered, ruling out atomistic or coarse-grained molecular modeling. The main goal of this thesis is to develop a computational framework to understand the dynamics of biomembranes embedded in a viscous fluid using phase-field models. Phase-field models introduce a scalar continuous field to define a diffuse moving interface, whose physics is encoded in partial differential equations governing it. These models can deal with dramatic shape and topological transformations and are amenable to multiphysics coupling. However, they present significant numerical challenges, such as the high-order character of the equations, the resolution of sharp and moving fronts, or the efficient time-integration. We address all these issues through a combination of meshfree spacial discretization using local maximum-entropy basis functions, and a Lagrangian variational formulation of the coupled elasticity-hydrodynamics. The smooth meshfree approach provides accurate approximations of the phase-field and can easily deal with local adaptivity, the Lagrangian approach naturally extend adaptivity to dynamics, and the variational formulation enables nonlinearly-stable robust variational time integration. The numerical implementation of these methods in a high-performance computing framework has motivated the development of a new computer code, which integrates state-of-the-art parallel libraries and incorporates important technical contributions to overcome bottlenecks that arise in meshfree methods for large-scale problems. The resulting code is flexible and has been applied to other scientific problems in a number of collaborations dealing with flexoelectricity, metal forming, creeping flows, or fracture in materials with strongly anisotropic surface energy.

Currently, the intervention in urban excavations with greater dimension and depth is increasing in importance exponentially. The great sensitivity of the overlying buildings to the displacements and tensions produced in its foundations due to ground movements behind the retaining wall and the lack of resources and calculation criteria that the professionals who have to design these structural systems have to deal with, often produce unacceptable damage in the existing buildings. This document presents the extensive bibliography describing the research for nearly 70 years, that has been developed on this issue, from the retaining wall behavior patterns to the buildings and structures damage risk, including the analysis of the ground movements produced by the excavation adjacent to the wall. First of all (book I), present document analyzes the behavior of containment studying how different aspects impact its calculation like the characteristics of the terrain, the depth of excavation, methods of analysis, friction contention-ground and the weight of the building itself, all aspects normally covered when calculating wall retaining; but also analyzes other aspects usually dismissed as the stiffness of soil, the stiffness of containment system, the stiffness of the building and the foundation. In the final part analyzes ground movements caused by the behavior of containment studied. Secondly (book II), a parametric study is suggested to assess the buildings sensitivity to foundations movements, in order to clarify the sensitive standards about categories of damage currently existing, and to define new ones for each building type, according to the time, geometry and materials. Finally, the document attempts, by the conjunction of both studies'phases (containment - building) to provide general simplified criteria to calculate retaining walls for excavations in urban areas, and its involvement to neighboring buildings, to get an optimized contentions'design to minimize the impact on the neighboring building.<br>Actualmente la actuación en excavaciones urbanas es cada vez más importante con trabajos de más dimensión, mayor complejidad y profundidad. La alta sensibilidad de los edificios vecinos a los movimientos y tensiones producidas en su cimentación por los desplazamientos del terreno del trasdós de las pantallas, conjuntamente con la falta de medios suficientes y criterios de cálculo que sufren los profesionales que han de diseñar estos sistemas de contención, producen, cada vez con más frecuencia, lesiones inaceptables en el parque urbano edificado. El trabajo presentado estudia la extensa bibliografía que describe las investigaciones que, durante cerca de 70 años, se ha desarrollado sobre el problema, tanto del ámbito del comportamiento de la propia contención como de las reacciones sufridas por los edificios vecinos, pasando por el análisis de los movimientos inducidos por la excavación en el terreno de su trasdós. En primer lugar (libro I) se analiza el comportamiento de la contención estudiando cómo influyen diferentes aspectos como las características del terreno, la profundidad de la excavación, los métodos de análisis, el rozamiento pantalla-terreno y el peso de los edificios, aspectos todos ellos contemplados normalmente a la hora de calcular la contención; pero también otros aspectos habitualmente menospreciados como la rigidez del terreno, del sistema de contención, del edificio vecino y de su cimentación. En la parte final se realiza el análisis de los movimientos en el terreno del trasdós producidos por el comportamiento de la contención estudiada. En segundo lugar (libro II) se analiza paramétricamente la sensibilidad a los movimientos de la propia cimentación de diferentes tipologías edificatorias o arquetipos, inducidos por los movimientos en el trasdós de la contención, con el objetivo de precisar los criterios de sensibilidad de categorías de daño actualmente vigentes, para llegar a elaborar otros nuevos asociados a las diferentes tipologías edificatorias, según época, geometría y materiales. Finalmente el trabajo intenta, con la conjunción de las dos fases del estudio (contención-edificio) aportar un criterio simplificado de cálculo de las contenciones y de su afectación a los edificios vecinos para llegar a obtener un diseño optimizado de ésta para minimizar el impacto que producen en la edificación vecina.

It is well known the important role that difference equations play in several problems of the engineering or of the science. However, whereas the expression of the solutions when the coefficients of the equations are constant is widely known, the same does not happen for variable coefficients, except for the simplest case of first order equations. This work presents an analysis of the second order linear difference equations equations in the infinite, semi-infinite and finite cases. Moreover, for second order difference equations in the finite case, we study its associated boundary value problem. Our goal is to develop techniques which are analogous to those used in the analysis of the differential equations, and for the finite case, those used for boundary value problems. Although our techniques, with appropriate modifications, are also in accordance with the complex case, in this work we mainly deal the real case, i.e. the case in which all functions involved take values ​​in the field of real numbers. We study first the case of constant coefficients, showing initially the known results about second order linear diffrence equations with constant coefficients, to finish describing the multiple relationships of these equations with Chebyshev polynomials. These relationships allow us to calculate their solutions more directly and simply, without imposing conditions on the coefficients values of the equation . Another advantage of solving equations with constant coefficients using their relationship with Chebyshev polynomials is that you can extend the same approach to equations with variable coefficients and express as well their solutions in terms of functions with two arguments that we named Chebyshev functions. In this way, we get a closed formula to obtain the solutions for second order linear difference equations with variable coefficients. Given the close relationship between second order difference equations in the finite case and the inverse of tridiagonal matrices, in the last chapter we present the application of the above results to determine the invertibility of those matrices and, in that case, explicitly get its inverse.<br>Las ecuaciones en diferencias juegan un importante papel en variados problemas científicos y de ingeniería. Sin embargo, mientras que la expresión de las soluciones cuando los coeficientes de las ecuaciones son constantes es ampliamente conocida, no ocurre lo mismo para coeficientes variables, excepto en el caso mas simple de las ecuaciones de primer orden. En este trabajo presentamos un estudio de las ecuaciones en diferencias lineales de segundo orden, en los casos infinito, semi-infinito y finito. También, para las ecuaciones en diferencias de segundo orden en el caso finito, estudiamos los problemas de contorno asociados. Nuestro objetivo es desarrollar técnicas que sean análogas a aquéllas que se usan en el análisis de las ecuaciones diferenciales y, para el caso finito, las utilizadas en problemas de contorno. A pesar de que nuestras técnicas, con las convenientes modificaciones, también se ajustan al caso complejo, en este trabajo tratamos principalmente el caso real, es decir, el caso en el que todas las funciones involucradas toman valores en el cuerpo de los números reales. Estudiamos en primer lugar el caso de coeficientes constantes, presentando primero los resultados conocidos para acabar describiendo las múltiples relaciones de las ecuaciones en diferencias de segundo orden con coeficientes constantes con los polinomios de Chebyshev. Dichas relaciones nos permiten el cálculo de sus soluciones de forma más directa y sencilla, sin necesidad de imponer condiciones sobre los valores de los coeficientes de la ecuación. Una ventaja añadida de resolver las ecuaciones con coeficientes constantes utilizando su relación con los polinomios de Chebyshev, es que se puede extender la misma estrategia a las ecuaciones con coeficientes variables, pudiendo expresar también sus soluciones en términos de las que denominamos funciónes de de Chebyshev de dos argumentos. De esta forma, conseguimos una fórmula cerrada y de cálculo directo. Dada la estrecha relación entre las ecuaciones en diferencias de segundo orden en el caso finito y la inversión de matrices tridiagonales, en el último capítulo presentamos la aplicación de los resultados antes mencionados para determinar la invertibilidad de dichas matrices y, en ese caso, obtener explícitamente su inversa.

En este trabajo se ha desarrollado un cálculo vectorial sobre estructuras discretas, análogo al de los modelos continuos. Para ello se ha considerado como espacio subyacente un multigrafo finito o variedad discreta y se ha definido el concepto de espacio tangente a cada vértice. A partir de esta noción se han definido los distintos tipos de campos sobre la variedad y se ha introducido la estructura de variedad Riemanniana discreta, lo que ha posibilitado construir los operadores gradiente, divergencia y Laplaciano. La consideración de métricas generales sobre los multigrafos tiene consecuencias desde el punto de vista de las aplicaciones. Los esquemas en diferencias finitas para la resolución de problemas de contorno elípticos pueden ser vistos como problemas de contorno discretos relativos a Laplacianos asociados a determinadas métricas. A modo de ejemplo, en este trabajo se obtienen las métricas que corresponden a los esquemas en diferencias consistentes con el operador de Laplace sobre retículas uniformes.<br/><br/> Se ha desarrollado un cálculo integral sobre subvariedades discretas que incluye los análogos de las Identidades de Green. La obtención de estos teoremas integrales ha permitido plantear problemas de contorno autoadjuntos, que son la contrapartida discreta de problemas de contorno elípticos de segundo orden con condiciones de contorno mixtas. Se ha realizado un análisis de existencia y de unicidad de soluciones de tales problemas y se ha abordado también el estudio de los operadores integrales y sus correspondientes núcleos, asociados a cada uno de los problemas de contorno semihomogéneos tratados. <br/><br/> El hecho de que en un espacio finito todo operador lineal pueda interpretarse como un operador integral, nos ha permitido entender los operadores en diferencias que determinan los problemas de contorno como núcleos sobre el espacio de vértices de la variedad. Hemos demostrado que desde el punto de vista de la Teoría del Potencial estos núcleos satisfacen los principios de energía y del máximo, que son suficientes para que tenga sentido el problema de equilibrio sobre cada subconjunto. Además, las peculiaridades de estos núcleos nos han permitido probar que el soporte de la medida de equilibrio de cada subconjunto coincide con él. Esta propiedad conduce a expresar la función de Green de cada subconjunto en términos de medidas de equilibrio. <br/><br/>Finalmente, se ha generalizado el concepto de resistencia efectiva entre vértices de una variedad discreta y se ha demostrado que se satisfacen las mismas propiedades que en el caso clásico. En particular, se ha obtenido una expresión sencilla de la resistencia efectiva en términos de medidas de equilibrio.<br>In this work we have developed a vector difference calculus on discrete structures, analogous to vector differential calculus on continuous models. To this end, we consider a finite multigraph or discrete manifold as the underlying space and we define the concept of tangent space at a vertex. From this concept we define the different types of fields on a manifold and we introduce the discrete Riemannian structure, which has enable us to construct the gradient, divergence and Laplace operators. The consideration of general metrics on discrete manifolds has some consequences from the application point of view. The finite difference schemes for the resolution of elliptic boundary value problems can be seen as discrete boundary value problems with respect to the Laplace operator associated to specific metrics. As an example, in this work we obtain the metrics that correspond to consistent discrete difference schemes for the Laplace operator on uniform grids.<br/><br/>We also have developed an integral calculus on discrete manifolds that includes the analogous of the Green Identities. The obtained integral theorems allow us to raise adjoint boundary value problems, which are the discrete counterpart of second order elliptic boundary value problems with mixed boundary conditions. We have tackled an analysis of existence and uniqueness of solutions of such a problems. In addition, we have studied the integral operators and their corresponding kernels, associated with each one of the considered semihomogeneuos boundary value problems. <br/><br/>The fact that in a finite space a linear operator could be considered as an integral operator, has allow us to understand the difference operators determined by the boundary value problems as kernels on the manifold vertex space. We have proved that in the context of Potential Theory the above kernels verify the energy and maximum principles, that are enough to the resolution of the equilibrium problem on every subset. Moreover, the peculiarities of these kernels imply that the support of the equilibrium measure of a set coincides with the own set. This property leads to express the Green function of every subset in terms of equilibrium measures.<br/><br/>Finally, we have generalized the concept of effective resistance between vertices of a discrete manifold and we have proved that the properties verified in the standard case are still in force. In particular, we have obtained a simple expression of the effective resistance in terms of equilibrium measures.

Antecedentes: La evaluación de marcadores inmunohistoquímicos se realiza con fines diagnósticos, terapéuticos e investigadores de forma manual. La utilización del análisis informatizado de imágenes digitales para evaluar estos marcadores aún no es suficientemente eficaz. <br/>Objetivos: Diseñar un nuevo procedimiento informatizado para cuantificar marcadores inmunohistoquímicos nucleares y evaluar los efectos de la compresión de imágenes. <br/>Métodos: El procedimiento desarrollado consta de diferentes etapas, donde se evalúan diferentes marcadores immunohistoquímicos utilizados en cáncer de mama y en linfoma. <br/>Resultados: El análisis estadístico demostró una gran validez del método automatizado. La redondez fue el único parámetro morfológico afectado por la compresión. Unos factores correctores fueron desarrollados para corregir esta afectación y la variabilidad en la cuantificación producida por esta afectación. <br/>Conclusiones: Este nuevo procedimiento automatizado es un método objetivo, más rápido y reproducible que tiene un excelente nivel de precisión, incluso con imágenes digitales de elevada complejidad y también en imágenes comprimidas. <br/>Background: The evaluation of immunohistochemical markers is carried out manually for diagnostic, therapeutic and research purposes. The use of a computerized digital image analysis to evaluate these markers is not sufficiently effective yet.<br/><br/>Objectives: To design a new computerized procedure to quantify nuclear immunohistochemical markers and evaluate the effects of image compression.<br/><br/>Methods: The procedure developed consists of several stages which evaluate different immunohistochemical markers used in breast cancer and lymphoma.<br/><br/>Results: Statistical analysis demonstrated a high validity of the automated method. The roundness was the only morphological parameter affected by compression. Some correction factors were developed to correct this disorder and the variability in the measurement caused by this disorder.<br/><br/>Conclusions: This new automated process is objective, faster and it has also an excellent level of accuracy, even with highly complex digital images and compressed images.

La memòria recull contribucions a diversos aspectes del problema de l'estabilitat en sistemes hamiltonians quasi-integrables. Aquests aspectes inclouen resultats d'estabilitat efectiva, que comporten el confinament de trajectòries durant un interval de temps molt gran, i també resultats que estableixen l'existència de tors invariants, entre els quals distingim els tors KAM i tors de dimensió inferior.<br/><br/>Considerem un sistema hamiltonià quasi-integrable, amb <i>n</i> graus de llibertat, en el qual la mida de la pertorbació és "Epsilon". Malgrat la possibilitat de difusió en aquest tipus de sistemes, els teoremes de Nekhoroshev i KAM (Kolmogorov-Arnol'd-Moser) són resultats molt valuosos que asseguren certs tipus d'estabilitat. Amb tot, les proves habituals d'aquests teoremes no posen en relleu la profunda relació que existeix entre els diferents tipus d'estabilitat a què donen lloc. Gran part de la memòria és dedicada doncs a donar un enfocament unificat per als dos teoremes.<br/><br/>Després d'un capítol d'introducció, al capítol 2 descrivim el mètode seguit per a la prova d'ambdós teoremes, consistent a construir iterativament una transformació canònica que porti el hamiltonià de partida a una forma normal que depengui de menys angles. Per a l'obtenció de la forma normal fem ús del formalisme de les sèries de Lie, que descrivim a la secció 2.1. Aquest és un procediment molt apropiat per a aplicacions pràctiques, perquè permet dur a terme càlculs explícits en exemples concrets, i pot ésser directament implementat en ordinadors. Per tal d'evitar l'efecte causat pels petits divisors, prop de la ressonància associada a un mòdul fixat acceptem que la forma normal pugui dependre de certes combinacions d'angles. De fet només cal considerar ressonàncies fins a un ordre finit apropiat, ja que l'efecte de les ressonàncies d'ordre més alt és exponencialment petit. Basant-nos en el mètode de les sèries de Lie, construïm el procés iteratiu, el qual és finit en la prova del teorema de Nekhoroshev i infinit per al teorema KAM (en aquest darrer cas, sempre prenem el mòdul nul). De fet, descrivim un algorisme lineal i un de quadràtic. Tot i que l'algorisme lineal és d'aparença més senzilla, mostrem que el càlcul explícit de la forma normal podria ésser una mica més ràpid usant l'algorisme quadràtic.<br/><br/>A les seccions 2.3 i 2.4 obtenim les versions lineal i quadràtica del lema iteratiu, que ens donen les fites per a un pas concret del procés iteratiu en cadascun dels dos algorismes. Utilitzem una norma per a camps vectorials hamiltonians (introduïda a la secció 2.2), la qual ens permet d'optimitzar les fites respecte les d'altres autors. Duent a terme un nombre adequat de passos, i aplicant reiteradament el lema iteratiu (en qualsevol de les seves dues versions), obtenim a la secció 2.5 el teorema de la forma normal, en el qual la fita de la resta és exponencialment petita. La prova d'aquest resultat esdevé molt simple degut al fet que el lema iteratiu ha estat optimitzat.<br/><br/>Al capítol 3 obtenim, a partir del teorema de la forma normal, la prova del teorema de Nekhoroshev en el cas quasiconvex. En primer lloc, donem a les seccions 3.1 i 3.2 fites d'estabilitat vàlides sobre regions no ressonants i regions ressonants, respectivament (per al cas ressonant imposem la condició de quasiconvexitat). A la secció 3.3 recobrim tot l'espai de fases amb una família de conjunts, que reben el nom de blocs, associats a diferents mòduls de ressonàncies. Així obtenim a la secció 3.4 un temps d'estabilitat exponencialment gran en 1/Epsilon. per a totes les trajectòries, completant la prova del teorema de Nekhoroshev amb l'exponent òptim 1/2<i>n</i>.<br/><br/>Obtenim també al capítol 3 altres resultats sobre estabilitat efectiva. Hem considerat a la secció 3.1 una pertorbació d'un sistema de <i>n</i> oscil·ladors harmònics amb freqüències satisfent una condició diofàntica. En aquest cas l'exponent de les fites és 1/(Tau + 1), essent Tau l'exponent de la condició diofàntica. A la secció 3.5 veiem que podem millorar les fites de Nekhoroshev si ens restringim a un entorn de la ressonància associada a un mòdul fixat, i obtenim uns exponents d'estabilitat particulars, que depenen de la dimensió del mòdul. A més, apliquem aquestes fites al conegut exemple d'Arnol'd.<br/><br/>Al capítol 4 provem la versió isoenergèica de teorema KAM de manera directa sense usar aplicació de Poincaré) i introduïm la noció de tor quasi-invariant. Comencem veient a la secció 4.1 les dificultats que sorgeixen en el cas isoenergètic, i les resolem amb els lemes tècnics que donem a la secció 4.2. El mètode iteratiu que usem per a provar el teorema KAM isoenergètic és paral·lel, en línies generals, al que usa Arnol'd en el cas ordinari. A la secció 4.3 donem fites per a un pas concret del procés a partir del lema iteratiu. A la secció 4.4 completem la prova del teorema KAM isoenergètic, veient que les restes tendeixen ràpidament cap a zero i obtenint tors invariants <i>n</i>-dimensionals (tors KAM), però només sobre un conjunt cantorià que ve donat per freqüències diofàntiques.<br/><br/>A més, obtenim a la secció 4.5 un resultat d'estabilitat que constitueix un pont entre els teoremes KAM i de Nekhoroshev. Cal considerar les freqüències que satisfan aproximadament una condició diofàntica, fins una precisió donada <i>r</i>. Aquestes freqüències donen lloc a tors quasi-invariants, noció que expressa que les trajectòries que parteixen d'un d'aquests tors hi romanen a prop durant un temps exponencialment gran en 1/<i>r</i>. Així, la precisió <i>r</i> passa a constituir el paràmetre de pertorbació (per a <i>r</i> = 0 tenim els tors KAM). Obtenim aquest resultat dins del mateix esquema iteratiu usat per al teorema KAM però aturant-lo en el moment adequat, en comptes de dur-lo fins al límit. El resultat és molt proper, des del punt de vista quantitatiu, al teorema KAM. Qualitativament, sacrifiquem l'estabilitat perpètua dels tors KAM però, en canvi, tenim un resultat més significatiu des del punt de vista pràctic, ja que per tal d'associar un tor quasi-invariant a una freqüència donada només cal comprovar la condició diofàntica aproximadament. Aquest resultat és lleugerament diferent dels d'altres autors, que estableixen que els tors KAM són "enganxosos" (prenent com a paràmetre la distància a un tor KAM fixat). El nostre resultat és més útil a la pràctica, car no requerim l'existència prèvia d'un tor KAM.<br/><br/>Estudiem a la secció 4.6 l'existència de tors invariants per a un hamiltonià a l'entorn d'un punt fix el·líptic. Sota les condicions adequades, el teorema KAM ens diu que en un entorn de radi <i>r</i> existeix un gran nombre de tors invariants. Fins i tot, si les freqüències del punt el·líptic satisfan una condició diofàntica, llavors la mesura del complementari dels tors invariants és exponencialment petita en 1/<i>r</i>.<br/><br/>Al capítol 5 estudiem els tors invariants de dimensió inferior prop de la ressonància associada a un mòdul de dimensió <i>d < n</i>. La localització d'aquests tors, especialment els tors hiperbòlics, és important com a primer pas per a establir l'existència de difusió d'Arnol'd al llarg d'una cadena de transició. En primer lloc, posem el hamiltonià en forma normal respecte el mòdul fixat i la resta és petita. Fent un canvi canònic lineal (secció 5.2), podem suposar que la part en forma normal només depèn de <i>d</i> angles. Menyspreant la resta, fem un estudi de la forma normal, la qual constitueix un sistema intermedi entre el hamiltonià no pertorbat i el hamiltonià pertorbat. A la secció 5.1 donem condicions per tal que la forma normal tingui tors invariants de dimensio <i>n-d</i>, els quals poden ésser el·líptics, hiperbòlics i d'altres categories. Considerem a la secció 5.3 el cas d'una ressonància simple (<i>d</i>=1), en el qual la forma normal és integrable i per tant podem dur a terme un estudi complet de les varietats invariants dels tors hiperbòlics i les connexions homoclíniques que tenen lloc. Remarquem que, si bé l'existència dels tors hiperbòlics per al sistema original ha estat establerta per altres autors, cal esperar que aquests tors es trobin molt a prop dels de la forma normal si aquesta ha estat obtinguda fins un ordre prou alt. Llavors podem obtenir més informació sobre les varietats invariants.<br><i>The main results concerning stability in nearly-integrable Hamiltonian systems are revisited: Nekhoroshev theorem (effective stability) and KAM theorem (existence of invariant tori). We prove both theorems using a common method, which allows to stress the close relationship between them.<br/><br/>The method consists of bringing our Hamiltonian to normal form using an iterative procedure based on Lie series. We describe two algorithms (linear and quadratic) which can both be directly implemented in computers. To give estimates for the remainder of the normal form along the iterative process, we use a vectorfield norm which allows to optimize the estimates.<br/><br/>Iterating these estimates an appropiate (finite) number of steps, we get an exponentially small remainder. Assuming quasiconvexity, we get Nekhoroshev theorem (with the optimal exponent). Further results on effective stability are also obtained.<br/><br/>We prove the isoenergetic version of KAM theorem in a direct way (without using a Poincaré map). In this case, in order to make the remainder tend to zero, we consider an infinite iterative process. In this way the majority of trajectories lie in invariant tori, but these tori fill a Cantorian set given by Diophantine frequencies. Moreover, we introduce the notion of nearly-invariant torus by stopping the process at an appropiate step. We associate a nearly-invariant torus to the frequencies satisfying, up to a given precision, a Diophantine condition (the precision becomes the parameter of perturbation). We also prove the existence of a large number of invariant tori near an elliptic fixed point with Diophantine frequencies: we give for the complement of the invariant tori an exponentially small estimate.<br/><br/>Finally, we study low dimensional tori near resonances and the invariant manifolds of hyperbolic tori near simple resonances. This constitutes a first step towards finding Arnol'd diffusion in nearly-integrable Hamiltonian systems.</i>

Many of the problems in experimental sciences and other disciplines can be expressed in the form of nonlinear equations. The solution of these equations is rarely obtained in closed form. With the development of computers, these problems can be addressed by numerical algorithms that approximate the solution. Specifically, fixed point iterative methods are used, which generate a convergent sequence presumably to the solution of the equation or system of equations. Since J.F. Traub (Iterative methods for the solution of equations, Prentice-Hall, N.J. 1964) initiated the qualitative as well the quantitative analysis of iterative methods in the 1960s, iterative methods for nonlinear systems has been a constantly interesting field of study for numerical analysts. Our contribution to this field is the analysis and construction of new iterative methods, by improving the order of convergence and computational efficiency either of these or other known methods. To study the new iterative methods that we have proposed, we reviewed analyzed and improved classic concepts of computational order of convergence, the error equation, and the computational cost of an iterative method for both an equation and a system of nonlinear equations. Specifically, we have worked on the following points: - We computed the local order of convergence for known two-step and new multi-step iterative methods by means of expansions in formal developments in power series of the function F, the Jacobian operator, the inverse Jacobian operator and the divided difference operator and its inverse operator. - We generated some measures that approximate the order of convergence. Four new variants for computing the computational order of convergence (COC) are given: one requires the value of the root, whilst the other three do not. - We constructed families of iterative schemes that are variants of Newton’s method and Chebyshev’s method and improve the order and the efficiency. - We studied several families of the modified Secant method (Secant, Kurchatov and Steffensen), evaluated variants of these methods and chose the most efficient. - We generalized the concepts of efficiency index and computational efficiency for nonlinear equations to systems of nonlinear equations. This has been termed the computational efficiency index (CEI). - We considered that in iterative process using variable precision, the accuracy will increase as the computation proceeds. The final result will be obtained as precisely as possible, depending on the computer and the software. - We expressed the cost of evaluating elementary functions in terms of products. This cost depends on the computer, the software and the arithmetic that we used. The above numerical calculations were performed in the algebraic system called MAPLE. - We presented a new way of comparing elapsed time for different iterative schemes. This consists of estimating the time required to achieve a correct decimal of the solution by the method selected. That is, we measured the relationship between the time to fulfill the stop criterion and the total number of correct decimals obtained by method. The five papers selected for this compendium were published in scientific journals in the area of applied mathematics. The impact factor of these journals is, in all cases, in the first third according to the classification of the Journal of Citation Reports. There are four preceding papers that no are part of this report by its publication date.<br>Gran parte de los problemas en ciencias experimentales y otras disciplinas se pueden expresar en forma de ecuaciones no lineales. La solución de estas ecuaciones rara vez se obtiene en forma cerrada; con el desarrollo de los ordenadores, estos problemas pueden ser abordados por algoritmos numéricos que aproximan la solución. Concretamente, se utilizan métodos iterativos de punto fijo, que generan una secuencia convergente presumiblemente a la solución de la ecuación o sistema de ecuaciones. Desde J.F. Traub, (Iterative methods for the solution of equations, Prentice-Hall, N.J. 1964) inició el estudio cualitativo y el análisis cuantitativo de éstos métodos iterativos en la década de los sesenta, los métodos iterativos para sistemas no lineales ha sido un área de constante estudio para los analistas numéricos. La contribución que presenta este compendio en este campo es el análisis y la construcción de nuevos métodos iterativos mejorando ya sea el orden de convergencia o ya sea la eficiencia computacional de éstos o de otros ya conocidos. Para el estudio de nuevos métodos iterativos, se ha revisado, analizado y en algun caso redefinido los conceptos clásicos de orden de convergencia computacional, de ecuación del error y de coste computacional de un método iterativo, tanto para una ecuación como para un sistema de ecuaciones no linealesEn concreto, se ha trabajado en los siguientes puntos: - El cálculo del orden local de convergencia para métodos conocidos de dos pasos y para nuevos métodos iterativos multipaso se realiza haciendo uso de desarrollos formales en serie de potencias del error. Se ha desarrollado la función F, el operador Jacobiano, el operador Jacobiano inverso, el operador diferencia dividida y su operador inverso. -Se generan algunas medidas que aproximan el orden local de convergencia del método iterativo. Se presentan cuatro nuevas variantes para el cálculo del orden de convergencia computacional (COC, computational order of convergence); un parámetro que necesita el valor de la solución o raíz, y tres parámetros que no requieren de éste valor. - Construcción de familias, los esquemas iterativos de las cuáles son variantes del método de Newton y del método de Chebyshev, mejorando el orden y la eficiencia de éstos. - Estudio de diversas familias, derivadas del método de la Secante (Secante, Kurchatov y Steffensen), variantes de estos métodos y elección de los más eficientes. - Generalización de los conceptos de índice de eficiencia y de eficiencia computacional para ecuaciones a sistemas de ecuaciones no lineales. Se ha denominado índice de eficiencia computacional (CEI, Computational Efficiency Index). - Análisis y construcción de procesos iterativos de precisión variable. La precisión aumenta a medida que la computación avanza, y el resultado final se obtiene con la máxima precisión posible, dependiendo del ordenador y el software disponibles. - Expresión del coste de la evaluación de las funciones elementales en términos de productos. Este coste depende del ordinador, el software y la aritmética que se utiliza. Los cálculos numéricos mencionados se ha realizado con el sistema algebraico MAPLE. - Una nueva forma de comparar el tiempo de ejecución dedicado al cálculo por los diferentes esquemas iterativos. Consiste en calcular el tiempo necesario para conseguir un decimal correcto de la solución por el método escogido. Concretamente, se mide la relación entre el tiempo transcurrido para cumplir el criterio de parada y el número total de decimales correctos obtenidos por el algoritmo. Los cinco trabajos seleccionados para constituir este compendio fueron publicados en revistas científicas del área de matemática aplicada. El factor de impacto de éstas se encuentra en el primer tercio de acuerdo con la clasificación del Journal of Citation Reports. Además, he publicado cuatro artículos previos, que no forman parte de esta memoria por fecha de publicación, válidos para un sexenio el año 2011.

Due to the huge amount of textual data that is persintently generated, researchers are obliged to classify and analize them, even though there are different ways as well as computing tools to facilitate their study. In this thesis a procedure method as well as its computing tools are given in order to analyze chronological corpus. Our goal is focused mainly in analysing the corpus structure and clarifying the vocabulary flow. The proposed statistical methodology follows the one described by Bécue-Bertaut (2014) which allows the combination of classic multidimensional methods for data analysis with those that study the structure and evolution of corpus. In order to achieve this goal, the corpus is divided in three parts, according to the function of the words: specialized or local vocabulary, according to the addressed issue, which marks the evolutive corpus strategy; steady vocabulary, including those words used on a regular basis throughout the corpus and, random vocabulary, including those tool words like prepositions, conjunctions and so on. According to the words functions we suggest a methodology that combines the vocabulary index, the chronological characteristic words and a goodness of fit test for a Poisson distribution. After specialized vocabulary is analyzed and proposed methodology follows the idea developed by Benzécri (1973, 1981), implemented in the method of Analysis of a Data Matrix (AMADO), and incorporates a new procedure consisting of: first, order all specialized words: a) by theirs coordinates on the first dimension of a Correspondence Analysis (CA) and b) according to the document or segment documents characterized by the chronological characteristics words; second, display the vocabulary that determines the evolution through Bertin¿s Grafics and third, show the model structure or chronological evolution scheme by AC. The results obtained show the advantages of the analysis of data through a chronological approach to answer questions such as: What are the most important issues? Is there evolution in the vocabulary? What determines its evolution? The corpus is well organized? Is there thematic diversity? What role do each of the words according to their function? What are the words that allow evolve the corpus? The results are shown by analyzing a bibliographic base and a rhetorical text. The methodology was implemented in a set of functions programmed in R and can be applied to any type of corpus.<br>Debido a la gran cantidad de datos textuales que se generan constantemente, los investigadores se enfrentan con la necesidad de clasificarlos y analizarlos, aunque existen diferentes técnicas y herramientas computacionales para facilitar su estudio. En esta tesis se proporciona un procedimiento metodológico, así como su herramienta computacional para el análisis de corpus cronológicos. Nuestro interés se centra en modelizar la estructura del corpus y clarificar el flujo de su vocabulario. La metodología propuesta continúa con la linea metodológica desarrollada por Bécue- Bertaut (2014) la cual combina los métodos multidimensionales clásicos para el análisis de datos con los métodos para el estudio de la estructura y la evolución de los corpus. Para modelizar la estructura del corpus y clarificar el flujo de su vocabulario, el corpus se segmenta en tres partes, de acuerdo a las funciones que desempeñan las palabras: vocabulario especializado o local, que es inducido por el tema tratado, pero que también marca la estrategia evolutiva del corpus; vocabulario estable, conformado por las palabras utilizadas de forma regular a lo largo del corpus y, vocabulario aleatorio, formado por las palabras herramientas en general, como preposiciones y determinantes. En la descomposición del vocabulario según las funciones de las palabras, proponemos una metodología que combina el índice de reparto del vocabulario, las palabras características cronológicas y una prueba de bondad de ajuste para la distribución de Poisson. Después se analiza el vocabulario especializado y la metodología propuesta sigue la idea desarrollada por Benzécri (1973, 1981), implementada en el método de Análisis de una Matriz de Datos (AMADO), e incorpora un nuevo procedimiento que consiste en: primero, ordenar todas las palabras especializadas: a) por sus coordenadas sobre la primera dimensión de un Análisis de Correspondencias (AC) y b) de acuerdo con el documento o segmento de documentos caracterizados por las palabras características cronológicas; segundo, visualizar el vocabulario que determina la evolución a través de los gráficos de Bertin y, tercero, mostrar la estructura del modelo o esquema de evolución cronológica mediante AC. Los resultados que se obtienen muestran las ventajas que ofrece el análisis de los datos a través de un enfoque cronológico al responder a preguntas como: ¿Cuáles son los temas más relevantes? ¿Existe evolución en el vocabulario? ¿Qué es lo que determina su evolución? ¿El corpus está bien organizado? ¿Existe diversidad temática? ¿Qué papel desempeña cada una de las palabras según su función? ¿Cuáles son las palabras que permiten evolucionar al corpus? Los resultados se muestran mediante el análisis de una base bibliográfica y de un texto retórico. La metodología fue implementada en un conjunto de funciones programadas en R y puede ser aplicada a cualquier tipo de corpus.

The main object of study of this thesis is the development of artificial diffusion shock capturing techniques for continuous and discontinuous Galerkin (cG and dG) approximations of the convection-diffusion problem. Special emphasis is given to the fulfillment of the Discrete Maximum Principle (DMP). Two artificial diffusion techniques are proposed for the transport problem in cG. They scale the corresponding artificial viscosity according to the variation of the gradient of the discrete solution between elements and one of them is proven to be monotonicity preserving. Both methods are used in combination with linear stabilization to enhance its performance; in particular a novel symmetric projection stabilization technique based on a local Scott-Zhang projector is proposed. The weighting of such detector in order to preserve the monotonicity properties "including entropy stability for 1D" of the underlying methods is faced. Both shock capturing techniques are shown to outperform other methods in the literature for different sets of numerical tests. In the dG case a novel definition of the DMP has been provided. One of the gradient jump shock detectors previously used for cG methods has been adapted to this new paradigm and proved to enjoy the DMP property in the one dimensional case. A possible extension to the multidimensional case is proposed. A DMP-enjoying multidimensional dG method for the convection-diffusion equation is obtained by means of graph-viscosity techniques. The method perturbs the entries of the problem matrix to enforce some properties that lead to a DMP. Appropriate shock detectors are used to weight the perturbation of the problem matrix and the lumping of the Mass matrix, avoiding an excessive smearing of the final solution. Finally an hp-adaptive technique is proposed to solve the steady convection-diffusion problem. A novel troubled-cell detector based on the evolution of the gradient of the discrete solution along the refinement process is proposed. This troubled-cell detector is able to detect the shock layers in which linear order is enforced. Moreover the application of the artificial viscosity is restricted to such regions. At the same time, high order polynomials are reached through p-refinement in the smooth regions of the solutions. The performance of all the methods has been tested by means of various numerical tests and the results obtained are provided and commented in the document.<br>En aquesta tesi es proposen diferents eines de difusió artificial per a la captura de xocs en mètodes de Galerkin continu i discontinu (cG i dG) aplicats al problema de convecció-difusió. S’ha posat un especial èmfasi en aconseguir mètodes que satisfacin la versió discreta del Principi del Màxim (DMP). S’han proposat dos mètodes de difusió artificial per a l’equació del transport en cG. Ambdós utilitzen la variació del gradient (de la solució discreta) entre els elements per a escalar la quantitat de viscositat que afegeixen i s’ha provat que un d’ells compleix el DMP. Per tal de millorar-ne els resultats, aquests mètodes s’utilitzen en combinació amb diferents tipus d’estabilizació lineal; en particular es proposa un nova tècnica d’estabilització per projecció simètrica local basada en un projector d’Scott-Zhang. També es contempla un sistema de ponderació de l’activació dels termes d’aquest darrer mètode per tal de preservar les propietats monotòniques del mètode subjacent; incloent la convergència a la solució entròpica. S’ha proposat una nova definició de DMP per al cas discontinu. S’ha adaptat un dels detectors de xocs del cas continu per tal que la compleixi en el cas 1D i se n’ha indicat una possible extensió per al cas multidimensional. S’aconsegueix un mètode que compleixi el DMP per al cas discontinu fent ús de la graf-viscositat. Els valors de la matriu del problema es modifiquen per tal d’obtenir-ne una que es pot demostrar que compleix les propietats desitjades. Per tal de minimitzar l’impacte d’aquestes pertorbacions en el resultat final, es limita la seva aplicació als graus de llibertat on és necessària fent ús del detector de xocs prèviament proposat. Finalment, es proposa una tècnica d’hp-adaptivitat per resoldre el problema de convecció-difusió estacionari. S’ha dissenyat un marcador de cel·les conflictives que és capaç de detectar les regions amb xocs mitjantçant el seguiment de l’evolució del valor del gradient de la solució discreta amb el refinament de la malla. Aquest marcador de cel·les conflictives determina quins elements han de ser estabilitzats amb el nostre capturador de xocs i n’imposa ordre lineal. Entretant, a les regions on la solució és suau s’assoleixen polinomis d’alt ordre mitjantçant l’ús d’algorismes de p-refinament. El comportament de totes aquestes tècniques de captura de xocs ha estat posat a prova amb un seguit d’experiments numèrics el resultat dels quals acompanya la presentació de cada mètode al llarg de tot el document.

In this thesis we use analytic combinatorics to deal with two related problems: graph enumeration and random graphs from constrained classes of graphs. We are interested in drawing a general picture of some graph families by determining, first, how many elements are there of a given possible size (graph enumeration), and secondly, what is the typical behaviour of an element of fixed size chosen uniformly at random, when the size tends to infinity (random graphs). The problems concern graphs subject to global conditions, such as being planar and/or with restrictions on the degrees of the vertices. In Chapter 2 we analyse random planar graphs with minimum degree two and three. Using techniques from analytic combinatorics and the concepts of core and kernel of a graph, we obtain precise asymptotic estimates and analyse relevant parameters for random graphs, such as the number of edges or the size of the core, where we obtain Gaussian limit laws. More challenging is the extremal parameter equal to the size of the largest tree attached to the core. In this case we obtain a logarithmic estimate for the expected value together with a concentration result. In Chapter 3 we study the number of subgraphs isomorphic to a fixed graph in subcritical classes of graphs. We obtain Gaussian limit laws with linear expectation and variance when the fixed graph is 2-connected. The main tool is the analysis of infinite systems of equations by Drmota, Gittenberger and Morgenbesser, using the theory of compact operators. Computing the exact constants for the first estimates of the moments is in general out of reach. For the class of series-parallel graphs we are able to compute them in some particular interesting cases. In Chapter 4 we enumerate (arbitrary) graphs where the degree of every vertex belongs to a fixed subset of the natural numbers. In this case the associated generating functions are divergent and our analysis uses instead the so-called configuration model. We obtain precise asymptotic estimates for the number of graphs with given number of vertices and edges and subject to the degree restriction. Our results generalize widely previous special cases, such as d-regular graphs or graphs with minimum degree at least d.<br>En aquesta tesi utilitzem l'analítica combinatòria per treballar amb dos problemes relacionats: enumeració de grafs i grafs aleatoris de classes de grafs amb restriccions. En particular ens interessa esbossar un dibuix general de determinades famílies de grafs determinant, en primer lloc, quants grafs hi ha de cada mida possible (enumeració de grafs), i, en segon lloc, quin és el comportament típic d'un element de mida fixa triat a l'atzar uniformement, quan aquesta mida tendeix a infinit (grafs aleatoris). Els problemes en què treballem tracten amb grafs que satisfan condicions globals, com ara ésser planars, o bé tenir restriccions en el grau dels vèrtexs. En el Capítol 2 analitzem grafs planar aleatoris amb grau mínim dos i tres. Mitjançant tècniques de combinatòria analítica i els conceptes de nucli i kernel d'un graf, obtenim estimacions asimptòtiques precises i analitzem paràmetres rellevants de grafs aleatoris, com ara el nombre d'arestes o la mida del nucli, on obtenim lleis límit gaussianes. També treballem amb un paràmetre que suposa un repte més important: el paràmetre extremal que es correspon amb la mida de l'arbre més gran que penja del nucli. En aquest cas obtenim una estimació logarítmica per al seu valor esperat, juntament amb un resultat sobre la seva concentració. En el Capítol 3 estudiem el nombre de subgrafs isomorfs a un graf fix en classes de grafs subcrítiques. Quan el graf fix és biconnex, obtenim lleis límit gaussianes amb esperança i variància lineals. L'eina principal és l'anàlisi de sistemes infinits d'equacions donada per Drmota, Gittenberger i Morgenbesser, que utilitza la teoria d'operadors compactes. El càlcul de les constants exactes de la primera estimació dels moments en general es troba fora del nostre abast. Per a la classe de grafs sèrie-paral·lels podem calcular les constants en alguns casos particulars interessants. En el Capítol 4 enumerem grafs (arbitraris) el grau de cada vèrtex dels quals pertany a un subconjunt fix dels nombres naturals. En aquest cas les funcions generatrius associades són divergents i la nostra anàlisi utilitza l'anomenat model de configuració. El nostre resultat consisteix a obtenir estimacions asimptòtiques precises per al nombre de grafs amb un nombre de vèrtexs i arestes donat, amb la restricció dels graus. Aquest resultat generalitza àmpliament casos particulars existents, com ara grafs d-regulars, o grafs amb grau mínim com a mínim d.

The Power Flow model is extensively used to predict the behavior of electric grids and results in solving a nonlinear algebraic system of equations. Modeling the grid is essential for design optimization and control. Both applications require a fast response for multiple queries to a parametric family of power flow problems. Different solvers have been introduced especially designed for the algebraic nonlinear power flow equations, providing efficient solutions for single problems, even when the number of degrees of freedom is considerably large. However, there is no existing methodology providing an explicit solution of the Parametric Power Flow problem (viz. a computational vademecum, explicit in terms of the parameters). This work aims precisely at designing algorithms producing computational vademecums for the Parametric Power Flow problem. Once these solutions are available, solving for different values of the parameters is an extremely fast (real-time) post-process and therefore both the optimal design and the control problem can readily be addressed. In a first phase, a new family of iteratives solvers for the non-parametric version of the problem is devised. The method is based on a hybrid formulation of the problem combined with an alternated search directions scheme. These methods are designed such that it can be generalized to deal with the parametric version of the problem following a Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD) strategy. The solver for the parametric problem is conceived by performing the operations involving the unknowns in a PGD fashion. The algorithm follows the basic steps of the algebraic solver, but some operations are carried out in a PGD framework, that is requiring a nested iterative algorithm. The PGD solver is accompanied with an error assessment technique that allows monitoring the convergence of the iterative procedures and deciding the number of terms required to meet the accuracy prescriptions. Different examples of realistic grids and standard benchmark tests are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed methodologies.<br>El modelo de flujo de potencias se usa para predecir el comportamiento de redes eléctricas y desemboca en la resolución de un sistema de ecuaciones algebraicas no lineales. Modelar una red es esencial para optimizar su diseño y control. Ambas aplicaciones requieren una respuesta rápida a las múltiples peticiones de una familia paramétrica de problemas de flujo de potencias. Diversos métodos de resolución se diseñaron especialmente para resolver la versión algebraica de las ecuaciones de flujo de potencias. Sin embargo, no existe ninguna metodología que proporcione una solución explícita al problema paramétrico de flujo de potencias (esto quiere decir, un vademecum computacional explícito en términos de los parámetros). Esta tesis tiene como objetivo diseñar algoritmos que produzcan vademecums para el problema paramétrico de flujo de potencias. Una vez que las soluciones están disponibles, resolver problemas para diferentes valores de los parámetros es un posproceso extremadamente rápido (en tiempo real) y por lo tanto los problemas de diseño óptimo y control se pueden resolver inmediatamente. En la primera fase, una nueva familia de métodos de resolución iterativos para la versión algebraica del problema se construye. El método se basa en una formulación híbrida del problema combinado con un esquema de direcciones alternadas. Estos métodos se han diseñado para generalizarlos de forma que puedan resolver la versión paramétrica del problema siguiendo una estrategia llamada Descomposición Propia Generalizada (PGD). El método de resolución para el problema paramétrico calcula las incógnitas paramétricas usando la técnica PGD. El algoritmo sigue los mismo pasos que el algoritmo algebraico, pero algunas operaciones se llevan a cabo en el ambiente PGD, esto requiere algoritmos iterativos anidados. El método de resolución PGD se acompaña con una evaluación del error cometido permitiendo monitorizar la convergencia de los procesos iterativos y decidir el número de términos que requiere la solución para alcanzar la precisión preescrita. Diferentes ejemplos de redes reales y tests estándar se usan para demostrar el funcionamiento de las metodologías propuestas.

This thesis is devoted to study integro-differential equations. This type of equations constitutes nowadays a very active field of research which has important applications in modeling real-life phenomena where nonlocal interactions appear. The most canonical example of integro-differential operators is the fractional Laplacian, which is the infinitesimal generator of a radially symmetric Lévy process. We are interested in the regularity and qualitative properties of stable solutions to semilinear equations. Such solutions are those at which the linearized operator associated to the equation is nonnegative. They correspond to steady states of a system which are stable under small perturbations. The thesis is divided in two parts. In the first one we study the boundedness of stable solutions to a semilinar problem for the fractional Laplacian in a bounded domain. We consider the case when the domain is a ball, and we establish a condition on the power of the Laplacian and the dimension for stable solutions to be bounded. In particular, in dimensions between 2 and 6, both included, we prove that stable solutions are bounded for all powers of the fractional Laplacian. To establish these results we use the extension problem for the fractional Laplacian. This is an important technique that relates a fractional problem with a local one in a half-space of one more dimension. In the second part of the thesis we are focused on the study of saddle-shaped solutions to the integro-differential Allen-Cahn equation. These solutions, defined only when the dimension is even, are doubly radial, odd with respect to the Simons cone, and vanish only on this set. The importance of studying saddle-shaped solutions is due to their relation with the theory of nonlocal minimal surfaces and a fractional version of a conjecture by De Giorgi. They are the simplest non 1D candidates to be global minimizers in high dimensions, a property not yet established in any dimension. First we consider the problem where the operator appearing in the equation is the fractional Laplacian, and we use the extension problem. Our results establish the uniqueness of the saddle-shaped solution in all even dimensions, and its stability in even dimensions greater or equal than 14. Before this work, it was known that these solutions are unstable in dimensions 2, 4, and 6. Thus, after our result, the stability remains an open problem only in dimensions 8, 10, and 12. In dimensions greater or equal than 14, our result leads to the stability of the Simons cone as a nonlocal minimal surface. This is the first analytical proof of a stability result for the Simons cone in the nonlocal setting. We also study, for first time in the literature, saddle-shaped solutions to more general integro-differential Allen-Cahn equations with an operator which is rotation invariant and uniformly elliptic, but not the fractional Laplacian. Since the extension problem is no longer available, some new nonlocal techniques are developed in this thesis. We establish an appropriate setting to develop a theory of existence and uniqueness for the saddle-shaped solution. More precisely, we characterize the kernels for which we can carry out such a theory, by finding a necessary and sufficient condition on the convexity of the kernel. These results are achieved by writing the operator acting on a doubly radial odd function as a new integro-differential operator acting on functions defined only at one side of the Simons cone. Under the previous assumption on the kernel, we establish existence, uniqueness, and asymptotic behavior of the saddle-shaped solution to the integro-differential Allen-Cahn equation in all even dimensions. For this, we prove, among others, an energy estimate for doubly radial minimizers, a Liouville type result, the one-dimensional symmetry of positive solutions to semilinear problems in a half-space, and maximum principles in "narrow" sets.<br>Aquesta tesi està dedicada a estudiar equacions integro-diferencials. Aquest és un camp de recerca molt actiu actualment, amb aplicacions importants en modelització de fenòmens on apareixen interaccions de tipus no local. L'exemple més canònic d'operador integro-diferencial és el laplacià fraccionari, que és el generador infinitessimal de processos de Lévy radialment simètrics. El nostre principal objecte d'estudi és la regularitat i propietats qualitatives de solucions estables d'equacions semilineals. Aquestes solucions són aquelles per les quals l'operador linearitzat associat a l'equació és no-negatiu, i corresponen a estats estacionaris d'un sistema que són estables sota petites pertorbacions. La tesi està dividida en dues parts. A la primera, estudiem la regularitat de solucions estables d'un problema semilineal amb el laplacià fraccionari a un domini fitat. Considerem el problema en una bola i establim una condició per a la dimensió i la potència del laplacià fraccionari per tal que les solucions estables siguin fitades. En particular, en dimensions entre 2 i 6, ambdues incloses, demostrem que les solucions estables són fitades per a totes les potències del laplacià fraccionari. Per tal d'establir els resultats anteriors, fem servir el problema d'extensió del laplacià fraccionari. Aquesta és una tècnica important que relaciona un problema fraccionari amb un de local en un semiespai en una dimensió superior. A la segona part de la tesi ens dediquem a l'estudi de solucions de tipus sella per a l'equació d'Allen-Cahn integro-diferencial. Aquestes solucions, definides en espais de dimensió parella, són doblement radials, imparelles respecte el con de Simons i s'anul·len només en aquest conjunt. La importància d'aquestes solucions rau en la seva relació amb la teoria de superfícies mínimes no locals i amb una versió fraccionaria d'una conjectura de De Giorgi. Primer considerem l'equació amb el laplacià fraccionari, i fem servir el problema d'extensió. Els nostres resultats estableixen la unicitat de la solució de tipus sella en qualsevol dimensió parella, així com l'estabilitat en dimensions parelles més grans o igual que 14. Abans del nostre treball, només se sabia que aquestes solucions eren inestables en dimensions 2, 4 i 6. Per tant, després del nostre resultat l'estabilitat és un problema obert només en dimensions 8, 10 i 12. En dimensions parelles més grans o igual que 14, provem també l'estabilitat del con de Simons com a superfície mínima no local. Aquesta és la primera demostració analítica d'un resultat d'estabilitat pel con de Simons en el marc no local. Després dels resultats pel laplacià fraccionari, per primer cop a la literatura estudiem solucions de tipus sella per equacions integro-diferencials de tipus Allen-Cahn on l'operador que hi apareix és uniformement el·líptic i invariant per rotacions, però no és el laplacià fraccionari. Com el problema d'extensió ja no es pot fer servir, en aquesta tesi desenvolupem algunes tècniques no locals noves. Establim un marc apropiat on desenvolupar una teoria d'existència i unicitat per a la solució de tipus sella. Més precisament, caracteritzem els operadors pels quals es pot dur a terme aquesta teoria, trobant una condició necessària i suficient sobre la convexitat del nucli de l'operador. Per provar aquests resultats, escrivim l'operador actuant sobre una funció imparella i doblement radial com un nou operador que actua sobre funcions definides només a un costat del con de Simons. Sota les hipòtesis de convexitat anteriors, provem l'existència, unicitat i comportament asimptòtic de la solució de tipus sella per a l'equació d'Allen-Cahn integro-diferencial en totes les dimensions parelles. Per fer-ho, demostrem, entre d'altres, una estimació d'energia per minimitzants doblement radials, un resultat de tipus Liouville, la simetria de solucions positives de problemes semilineals en un semiespai i principis màxims en conjunts "estrets".

This dissertation is motivated by the concept of materials by design. Focusing on structures, this states that the properties in a mechanical component are not only inherited by its constituent material, but also by the shape in which this one is distributed in space. Although this notion has been developed for thousands of years in architecture, its relevance at a smaller scale has not been conceived until the arrival of additive manufacturing technologies. The materials by design approach is certainly multidisciplinary, from the study of the shape, its representation in CAD, to the final manufacturing by 3D printing. We here assess the first one, by means of numerical simulations. These play an important role, by reinforcing our physical intuition in the resolution of the following question: which is the material structure at a small scale (meso-structure) that features some prescribed properties at a global scale (bulk material). We introduce the material meso-structure as a lattice model with a parametric shape. The mechanical properties arising at the global scale are recovered by solving an equilibrium problem. Naturally, this one acquires the parametric nature of the lattice model. The main difficulty to handle the emerging mechanical properties of the bulk parametrically, is that the computational complexity of numerical simulations increases exponentially with the number of parameters. To overcome this, we resort to the Proper Generalized Decomposition (PGD), which provides explicit parametric solutions of our equilibrium problem. As a major contribution, we obtain the parametric solutions of the algebraic equations arising from different lattice structures using the same PGD framework. In this sense, the algebraic PGD works as a non-intrusive solver, which is not limited to structural problems but in general, any discrete form of a parametrized linear PDE. The parametric mechanical properties of 2D and 3D lattice materials are explicitly represented by the PGD solutions or computational vademecums. In particular, we reproduce the response of orthotropic Poisson's ratios in terms of the design parameters. Extreme negative values are identified, a characteristic that is relevant regarding the outperforming of auxetic (or negative Poisson's ratios) properties compared to conventional materials. Moreover, these computational vademecums could be further exploited to tailor the material design through multi-objective and constraint optimizations, providing an efficient tool to browse the parametric design space. Finally, we extend our parametric analysis using geometrically nonlinear finite elements to compute equilibrium, and the algebraic PGD a posteriori to interpolate their response. This is achieved with very good accuracy, for engineering purposes, at a considerably low number of modes. The nonlinear parametric framework surely broadens the range of applications, and we highlight this in two distinctive situations. First, we demonstrate its capability to describe the loading magnitude as an extra parameter to the material properties behavior. Last but not least, we show its potential to perform buckling analysis of lattice structures, as a function of the geometric parameters and the loading magnitude itself.<br>Este trabajo está motivado por el concepto del diseño de materiales a medida. Centrándose en estructuras, esto significa que las propiedades de un componente mecánico no sólo se heredan por su material constitutivo, sino también por la forma en la que éste se distribuye en el espacio. A pesar de que esta idea se haya desarrollado hace miles de años en arquitectura, su relevancia en un tamaño de escala menor no se ha concebido posible hasta el advenimiento de las tecnologías de manufactura aditiva. El diseño de materiales a medida es ciertamente multidisciplinario, desde el estudio de la forma, su representación en CAD, hasta su fabricación por medio de impresoras 3D. Aquí nos focalizamos en el primer aspecto, utilizando simulaciones numéricas. Éstas juegan un rol esencial, ayudando a nuestra intuición física en la respuesta del siguiente interrogante: ¿cuál es la estructura de un material en un pequeño tamaño de escala (meso-estructura), que determina ciertas propiedades mecánicas deseadas en un tamaño de escala grande? En este sentido, introducimos una meso-estructura de material a través de un modelo de tipo lattice, cuya forma está parametrizada. Las propiedades mecánicas, resultantes a gran escala, se derivan resolviendo un problema de equilibrio. Naturalmente, este problema hereda la parametrización introducida para el modelo lattice. La dificultad de resolver las propiedades mecánicas resultantes, de manera paramétrica, reside en que la complejidad computacional de las simulaciones numéricas se incrementa exponencialmente con el número de parámetros. Para evitar este infortunio, nos remitimos al método PGD (Proper Generalized Decomposition), que provee una solución paramétrica explícita de nuestro problema de equilibrio en cuestión. Como contribución destacada, obtenemos la solución paramétrica del sistema de ecuaciones algebraicas, resultante de diversas estructuras de tipo lattice, utilizando el mismo algoritmo PGD. En este sentido, la PGD algebraica funciona como un solver no intrusivo, cuyo uso no está limitado sólo a problemas estructurales sino a cualquier forma discreta de una ecuación diferencial en derivadas parciales (EDP) paramétrica. Las propiedades mecánicas paramétricas de materiales tipo lattice en 2D y 3D son representadas de manera explícita por soluciones PGD, también llamadas vademécums computacionales. En particular, obtenemos la respuesta de módulos de Poisson ortotrópicos, en función de los parámetros de diseño. Valores negativos extremos son identificados, una característica que es relevante en cuanto que ciertas propiedades auxéticas, esto es, relacionadas con módulos de Poisson negativos, resultan superiores en performance en comparación a los materiales convencionales. Además, los vademécums computacionales pueden utilizarse para explotar el diseño de materiales a medida a través de optimizaciones numéricas multi-objetivo, ya que permiten explorar las diversas soluciones en el espacio paramétrico de manera eficiente. Finalmente, este análisis paramétrico es extendido a no-linealidades geométricas, utilizando elementos finitos para resolver equilibrio, y la PGD algebraica a posteriori para interpolar su respuesta. Los resultados muestran una muy buena precisión, en términos ingenieriles, para un número de modos considerablemente bajo. El análisis no lineal amplía el rango de aplicaciones, para lo cual nos centramos en dos situaciones diversas. Primero, demostramos la capacidad de describir el comportamiento de las propiedades mecánicas teniendo a la magnitud de carga como un parámetro extra. Finalmente, demostramos el potencial de realizar el análisis de pandeo de estructuras tipo lattice, en función de los parámetros geométricos y de la magnitud de carga.

This thesis covers the development of monotonicity preserving finite element methods for hyperbolic problems. In particular, scalar convection-diffusion and Euler equations are used as model problems for the discussion in this dissertation. A novel artificial diffusion stabilization method has been proposed for scalar problems. This technique is proved to yield monotonic solutions, to be \ac{led}, Lipschitz continuous, and linearity preserving. These properties are satisfied in multiple dimensions and for general meshes. However, these results are limited to first order Lagrangian finite elements. A modification of this stabilization operator that is twice differentiable has been also proposed. With this regularized operator, nonlinear convergence is notably improved, while the stability properties remain unaltered (at least, in a weak sense). An extension of this stabilization method to high-order discretizations has also been proposed. In particular, arbitrary order space-time isogeometric analysis is used for this purpose. It has been proved that this scheme yields solutions that satisfy a global space-time discrete maximum principle unconditionally. A partitioned approach has also been proposed. This strategy reduces the computational cost of the scheme, while it preserves all stability properties. A regularization of this stabilization operator has also been developed. As for the first order finite element method, it improves the nonlinear convergence without harming the stability properties. An extension to Euler equations has also been pursued. In this case, instead of monotonicity-preserving, the developed scheme is local bounds preserving. Following the previous works, a regularized differentiable version has also been proposed. In addition, a continuation method using the parameters introduced for the regularization has been used. In this case, not only the nonlinear convergence is improved, but also the robustness of the method. However, the improvement in nonlinear convergence is limited to moderate tolerances and it is not as notable as for the scalar problem. Finally, the stabilized schemes proposed had been adapted to adaptive mesh refinement discretizations. In particular, nonconforming hierarchical octree-based meshes have been used. Using these settings, the efficiency of solving a monotonicity-preserving high-order stiff nonlinear problem has been assessed. Given a specific accuracy, the computational time required for solving the high-order problem is compared to the one required for solving a low-order problem (easy to converge) in a much finer adapted mesh. In addition, an error estimator based on the stabilization terms has been proposed and tested. The performance of all proposed schemes has been assessed using several numerical tests and solving various benchmark problems. The obtained results have been commented and included in the dissertation.<br>La present tesi tracta sobre mètodes d'elements finits que preserven la monotonia per a problemes hiperbòlics. Concretament, els problemes que s'han utilitzat com a model en el desenvolupament d'aquesta tesi són l'equació escalar de convecció-difusió-reacció i les equacions d'Euler. Per a problemes escalars s'ha proposat un nou mètode d'estabilització mitjançant difusió artificial. S'ha provat que amb aquesta tècnica les solucions obtingudes són monòtones, l'esquema "disminueix els extrems locals", i preserva la linearitat. Aquestes propietats s'han pogut demostrar per múltiples dimensions i per malles generals. Per contra, aquests resultats només són vàlids per elements finits Lagrangians de primer ordre. També s'ha proposat una modificació de l'operador d'estabilització per tal de que aquest sigui diferenciable. Aquesta regularització ha permès millorar la convergència no-lineal notablement, mentre que les propietats d'estabilització no s'han vist alterades. L'anterior mètode d'estabilització s'ha adaptat a discretitzacions d'alt ordre. Concretament, s'ha utilitzat anàlisi isogeomètrica en espai i temps per a aquesta tasca. S'ha provat que les solucions obtingudes mitjançant aquest mètode satisfan el principi del màxim discret de forma global. També s'ha proposat un esquema particionat. Aquesta alternativa redueix el cost computacional, mentre preserva totes les propietats d'estabilitat. En aquest cas, també s'ha realitzat una regularització de l'operador d'estabilització per tal de que sigui diferenciable. Tal i com s'ha observat en els mètodes de primer ordre, aquesta regularització permet millorar la convergència no-lineal sense perdre les propietats d'estabilització. Posteriorment, s'ha estudiat l'adaptació dels mètodes anteriors a les equacions d'Euler. En aquest cas, en comptes de preservar la monotonia, l'esquema preserva "cotes locals". Seguint els desenvolupaments anteriors, s'ha proposat una versió diferenciable de l'estabilització. En aquest cas, també s'ha desenvolupat un mètode de continuació utilitzant els paràmetres introduïts per a la regularització. En aquest cas, no només ha millorat la convergència no-lineal sinó que l'esquema també esdevé més robust. Per contra, la millora en la convergència no-lineal només s'observa per a toleràncies moderades i no és tan notable com en el cas dels problemes escalars. Finalment, els esquemes d'estabilització proposat s'han adaptat a malles de refinament adaptatiu. Concretament, s'han utilitzat malles no-conformes basades en octrees. Utilitzant aquesta configuració, l'eficiència de resoldre un problema altament no-lineal ha estat avaluada de la següent forma. Donada una precisió determinada, el temps computacional requerit per resoldre el problema utilitzant un esquema d'alt ordre ha estat comparat amb el temps necessari per resoldre'l utilitzant un esquema de baix ordre en una malla adaptativa molt més refinada. Addicionalment, també s'ha proposat un estimador de l'error basat en l'operador d'estabilització. El comportament de tots els esquemes proposats anteriorment s'ha avaluat mitjançant varis tests numèrics. Els resultats s'han compilat i comentat en la present tesi.

This thesis investigates numerical methods that approximate the solution of compressible flow equations. The first part of the thesis is committed to studying the Variational Multi-Scale (VMS) finite element approximation of several compressible flow equations. In particular, the one-dimensional Burgers equation in the Fourier space, and the compressible Navier-Stokes equations written in both conservative and primitive variables are considered. The approximations made for the VMS formulation are extensively researched; the design of the matrix of stabilization parameters, the definition of the space where the subscales live, the inclusion of the temporal derivatives of the subscales, and the non-linear tracking of the subscales are formulated. Also, the addition of local artificial diffusion in the form of shock capturing techniques is included. The accuracy of the formulations is studied for several regimes of the compressible flow, from aeroacoustic flows at low Mach numbers to supersonic shocks. The second part of the thesis is devoted to make the solution of the smallest fluctuating scales of the compressible flow affordable. To this end, a novel algorithm for $h-$refinement of computational physics meshes in a distributed parallel setting, together with the solution of some refinement test cases in supercomputers are presented. The definition of an explicit a-posteriori error estimator that can be used in the adaptive mesh refinement simulations of compressible flows is also developed; the proposed methodology employs the variational subscales as a local error estimate that drives the mesh refinement. The numerical methods proposed in this thesis are capable to describe the high-frequency fluctuations of compressible flows, especially, the ones corresponding to complex aeroacoustic applications. Precisely, the direct simulation of the fricative [s] sound inside a realistic geometry of the human vocal tract is achieved at the end of the thesis.<br>Esta tesis investiga métodos numéricos que aproximan la solución de las ecuaciones de flujo compresible. La primera parte de la tesis está dedicada al estudio de la aproximación numérica del flujo compresible por medio del método multiescala variacional (VMS) en elementos finitos. En particular, se consideran la ecuación de Burgers unidimensional descrita en el espacio de Fourier y las ecuaciones de Navier-Stokes de flujo compresible escritas en variables conservativas y primitivas. Las aproximaciones hechas para plantear la formulación VMS son ampliamente investigadas; el diseño de la matriz de parámetros de estabilización, la definición del espacio donde viven las subescalas, la inclusión de las derivadas temporales de las subescalas y el seguimiento no lineal de las subescalas son particularidades de la formulación que se analizan para cada una de las ecuaciones consideradas. Además, se incluye la adición de difusión artificial local en forma de técnicas de captura de choque. La precisión de las formulaciones se estudia para varios regímenes del flujo compresible, desde flujos aeroacústicos a bajos números de Mach hasta choques supersónicos. La segunda parte de la tesis está dedicada a hacer asequible la solución de las escalas fluctuantes más pequeñas del flujo compresible. Con este fin, se presenta un algoritmo novedoso para el refinamiento $h$ de las mallas de física computacional usadas en computación distribuida en paralelo. Además, se demuestra la solución en superordenadores de algunos casos de prueba del refinamiento de mallas. También se desarrolla la definición de un estimador de error explícito a posteriori que se puede usar en las simulaciones adaptativas de refinamiento de malla de flujos compresibles; la metodología propuesta emplea las subescalas variacionales como una estimación de error local que induce el refinamiento de la malla. Los métodos numéricos propuestos en esta tesis son capaces de describir las fluctuaciones de alta frecuencia de los flujos compresibles, especialmente los correspondientes a aplicaciones aeroacústicas complejas. Precisamente, la simulación directa del sonido consonántico fricativo [s] dentro de una geometría realista del tracto vocal humano se demuestra al final de la tesis.

In this Thesis we consider problems concerning brain oscillations generated across the interaction between excitatory (E) and inhibitory (I) cells. We explore how two neuronal groups with underlying oscillatory activity communicate much effectively when they are properly phase-locked as suggested by Communcation Through Coherence Theory. In Chapter 1 we introduce the Wilson-Cowan equations (WC), a mean field model describing the mean activity of a network of a single population of E cells and a single popultation of I cells and review the bifurcations that give rise to oscillatory dynamics. In Chapter 2 we study how the oscillations generated across the E-I interaction are affect by a periodic forcing. We take the WC equations in the oscillatory regime with an external time periodic perturbation. We consider the stroboscopic map for this system and compute the bifurcation diagram for its fixed and periodic points as the amplitude and the frequency of the perturbation are varied. From the bifurcation diagram, we can identify the phase-locked states as well as different areas involving bistablility between two invariant objects. Chapter 3 exploits recent techniques based on phase-amplitude variables to describe the phase dynamics of an oscillator under different perturbations. More precisely, the applications of the parameterization method to compute a change of variables that describes correctly the dynamics near a limit cycle in terms of the phase (a periodic variable) and the amplitude. The computational method uses the Floquet normal form to reduce the computational cost. This change provides two remarkable manifolds used in neuroscience: the sets of constant phase/amplitude (isochrons/isostables). Moreover, we compute the functions describing the phase and amplitude changes caused by a perturbation arriving at different phases of the cycle, known as Phase and Amplitude Response Curves, PRCs and ARCs, respectively. The computed parameterization provides also the extension of these curves outside of the limit cycle, defined as the Phase and Amplitude Response Functions, PRFs and ARFs, respectively. We compute these objects for limits cycles in systems with 2 and 3 dimensions. In Chapter 4 we apply the parameterization method to compute Phase Response Curves (PRCs) for a transient stimulus of arbitrary amplitude and duration. The underlying idea is to construct a particular periodic perturbation consisting of the repetition of the transient stimulus followed by a resting period when no perturbation acts. For this periodic system we consider the corresponding stroboscopic map and we prove that, under certain conditions, it has an invariant curve. We prove that this map has an invariant curve and we provide the relationship between the PRC and the internal dynamics of the curve. Moreover, we link the existence properties of this invariant curve as the amplitude of the perturbation is increased with changes in the PRC waveform and with the geometry of isochrons. Furthermore, we also provide algorithms to obtain numerically the PRC and the ARC. In Chapter 5 we study the dynamics arising when two identical oscillators are coupled near a Hopf bifurcation, where we assume the existence of a parameter uncoupling the system when it is equal to zero. Using a recently derived truncated normal form, we perform a theoretical dynamical analysis and study its bifurcations. Computing the normal form coefficients in the case of 2 coupled Wilson-Cowan oscillators gives an understanding of different types of behaviour that arise in this model of perceptual bistability. Notably, we find bistability between in-phase and anti-phase solutions. Using numerical continuation we confirm our theoretical analysis for small coupling strength and explore the bifurcation diagrams for large coupling strength, where the normal form approximation breaks down. We finally discuss the implications of this dynamical study in models of perceptual bistability.<br>Aquesta Tesi estudia problemes relacionats amb les oscil·lacions de l'activitat cerebral. Explorem com dues poblacions neuronals en activitat oscil·latòria es comuniquen més efectivament quan estan lligades en fase, tal com suggereix la teoria de 'Comunicació a Través de la Coherència'. Al capítol 1 introduïm les equacions de Wilson-Cowan (WC), un model de camp mitjà que descriu l' activitat d'una xarxa de neurones excitatòries (E) i inhibitòries (I) i calculem les bifurcacions que generen cicles límit. Al capítol 2 estudiem com un cicle límit generat a través d'aquesta interacció E-I respon a un forçament periòdic. Considerem el model de WC en règim oscil·latori amb una pertorbació externa periòdica en el temps. Considerem el mapa estroboscòpic d'aquest sistema i calculem el diagrama de bifurcació dels seus punts fixos i òrbites periòdiques en funció de l'amplitud i la freqüència de la pertorbació. El diagrama de bifurcació ens permet identificar les àrees amb lligadura de fase, axí com diferents àrees on tenim coexistència de dos objectes invariants estables. Al capítol 3 utilitzem tècniques recents basades en les variables fase-amplitud per a descriure la dinàmica de fase d'un oscil·lador sota diferents pertorbacions. En particular, utilitzem el mètode de la parametrització per a calcular un canvi de variables que descriu correctament la dinàmica prop del cicle límit en termes de la fase (variable periòdica) i l'amplitud. Aquests càlculs estan basats en la forma normal de Floquet que en redueix el cost computacional. Aquest canvi de variables ens permet calcular dos varietats importants en neurociència: els conjunts de fase/amplitud constant (les isòcrones/isostables). A més a més, calculem les funcions que descriuen els canvis de fase i amplitud causats per una pertorbació que arriba a diferents fases del cicle, les Corbes de Resposta de Fase i Amplitud, (PRCs i ARCs), respectivament. El canvi de variables calculat proporciona també l'extensió d'aquestes corbes fora del cicle límit, definides com les Funcions de Resposta de Fase i Amplitud, (PRFs i ARFs). Calculem tots aquests objectes per a cicles límit en 2 i 3 dimensions. Al capítol 4 ens centrem en les aplicacions del mètode de la parametrització per calcular PRCs per a estímuls de duració i amplitud arbitraria. La idea bàsica del mètode és construir una pertorbació periòdica particular que consisteix en la repetició d'un estímul transitori seguit d'un període de relaxació en el qual no actua cap pertorbació. Per a aquest sistema periòdic considerem el seu corresponent mapa estroboscòpic i demostrem que sota certes condicions, té una corba invariant. Demostrem que aquesta aplicació té una corba invariant i donem la relació entre la PRC i la dinàmica interna d'aquesta corba. A més a més, relacionem les propietats d'existència d'aquesta corba quan l'amplitud de la pertorbació augmenta, amb els canvis a la PRC i a la geometria de les isòcrones. Finalment, presentem algoritmes per obtenir numèricament la PRC i la ARC. Al capítol 5 estudiem la dinàmica emergent quan s'acoblen dos oscil·ladors idèntics prop d'una bifurcació de Hopf, pels quals suposem l'existència d'un paràmetre que desacobla el sistema quan s'anul·la. Utilitzant una forma normal derivada recentment per a 2 sistemes idèntics prop d'una bifurcació de Hopf, fem una anàlisi teòrica i estudiem les seves bifurcacions. Identificant els coeficients de la forma normal per a un model de dos oscil·ladors de tipus WC acoblats, il·lustrem els resultats obtinguts en l'anàlisi teòrica en un model amb moltes aplicacions al camp de la percepció biestable. The thesis is devoted to the analysis of elliptic PDEs and related problems. It is mainly focused on the study of qualitative and regularity properties of solutions to integro-differential equations. The study of such equations has attracted much attention recently since they arise naturally in different areas when dealing with processes where long range interaction phenomena appear. The canonical example of integro-differential operators is the fractional Laplacian, which is translation, rotation, and scale invariant. The thesis is divided into three parts. Part I concerns the study of uniqueness and regularity properties of solutions to integro-differential linear problems. First, we prove, by following a nonlocal Liouville-type method, the uniqueness of solutions in the one-dimensional case, in the presence of a positive solution or of an odd solution vanishing only at zero. As an application, we deduce the nondegeneracy of layer solutions (bounded and monotone solutions) to semilinear problems of Allen-Cahn type. Next, we establish the first boundary regularity result for the Neumann problem associated to the fractional Laplacian. We prove that weak solutions are Hölder continuous up to the boundary by developing a delicate Moser iteration with logarithmic corrections on the boundary. We also establish a Neumann Liouville-type theorem in a half-space, which is used together with a blow-up argument to show higher regularity of solutions. Part II of the thesis is focused on the study of the saddle-shaped solution to the integro-differential Allen-Cahn equation. These solutions, whose zero level set is the Simons cone, are expected to be the simplest minimizer which is not one-dimensional to the local and nonlocal Allen-Cahn equation in high enough dimensions. It plays, thus, the same role as the Simons cone in the theory of minimal surfaces. First, we study the saddle-shaped solution for the fractional problem by using the extension problem. We establish its uniqueness and, in dimensions greater or equal than 14, its stability. As a byproduct, we give the first analytical proof of a stability result for the Simons cone in the nonlocal setting for such dimensions. The key ingredient to prove these results is a maximum principle for the linearized operator. Next, we study saddle-shaped solutions for any rotation invariant and uniformly elliptic integro-differential operator. In this scenario, we need to develop some new nonlocal techniques since the extension approach is not available. In this respect, our main contribution is a characterization of the kernels for which one can develop a theory of existence and uniqueness of saddle-shaped solutions. Under these assumptions, we establish an energy estimate for doubly radial odd minimizers and some properties of the saddle-shaped solution, namely: existence, uniqueness, asymptotic behavior, and a maximum principle for the linearized operator. Finally, in Part III we develop a nonlocal Weirstrass extremal field theory. In analogy to the local theory, we construct a calibration for the nonlocal functional in the presence of a foliation made of solutions when the nonlocal Lagrangian satisfies an ellipticity condition. The model case in our setting corresponds to the energy functional for the fractional Laplacian, for which such a calibration was still unknown. The existence of such a calibration allows us to prove that any leaf of the foliation is automatically a minimizer for its own exterior datum, with no need to have an existence result of minimizers, neither to know their regularity.<br>La tesis está dedicada al análisis de EDPs elípticas y problemas relacionados. Se centra principalmente en el estudio de propiedades cualitativas y de regularidad de soluciones de ecuaciones integro-diferenciales. El estudio de estas ecuaciones ha recibido mucho interés en los últimos tiempos, ya que aparecen de forma natural en diferentes áreas cuando se tratan fenómenos que involucran interacciones de largo alcance. El operador integro-diferencial canónico es el laplaciano fraccionario, que es invariante por traslaciones, rotaciones y cambios de escala. La tesis se divide en tres partes. La primera trata el estudio de propiedades de unicidad y regularidad para soluciones de problemas lineales integro-diferenciales. En primer lugar, probamos, siguiendo un método no local de tipo Liouville, la unicidad de soluciones en el caso unidimensional, en presencia de una solución positiva o de una solución impar que se anula solo en el origen. Como aplicación, deducimos la no degeneración de soluciones 'layer' (soluciones acotadas y monótonas) de problemas semilineales de tipo Allen-Cahn. A continuación, establecemos el primer resultado de regularidad en la frontera para el problema de Neumann asociado al laplaciano fraccionario. Demostramos que las soluciones débiles son Hölder continuas hasta el borde mediante una delicada iteración de Moser con correcciones logarítmicas en la frontera. También establecemos un teorema de tipo Liouville con condiciones de Neumann en un semiespacio, que se usa junto con un argumento de 'blow-up' para demostrar regularidad de orden superior para las soluciones. La parte II de la tesis se centra en el estudio de la solución de tipo silla para la ecuación integro-diferencial de Allen-Cahn. Juegan, por tanto, el mismo papel que el cono de Simons en la teoría de superficies mínimas. Primero, estudiamos la solución de tipo silla para el problema fraccionario utilizando el problema de extensión. Establecemos su unicidad y, en dimensiones mayores o iguales a 14, su estabilidad. Como consecuencia, damos la primera prueba analítica de un resultado de estabilidad para el cono de Simons en el marco no local para tales dimensiones. El ingrediente clave para probar estos resultados es un principio del máximo para el operador linealizado. A continuación, estudiamos soluciones de tipo silla para cualquier operador integro-diferencial que sea invariante por rotaciones y uniformemente elíptico. En este escenario necesitamos desarrollar nuevas técnicas no locales, ya que el problema de extensión no está disponible. En este sentido, nuestra principal contribución es la caracterización de los núcleos para los que se puede desarrollar una teoría de existencia y unicidad para las soluciones de tipo silla. Bajo esa condición, establecemos una estimación de energía para minimizantes impares y doblemente radiales así como algunas propiedades para la solución de tipo silla, como existencia, unicidad, comportamiento asintótico y un principio máximo para el operador linealizado. Finalmente, en la Parte III desarrollamos una teoría de campo de extremales de Weirstrass nolocal. En analogía con la teoría local, construimos una calibración para funcionales no locales en presencia de una foliación por soluciones cuando el lagrangiano no local satisface una condición de elipticidad. El caso modelo en este marco es el funcional de energía asociado al laplaciano fraccionario, para el cual aún se desconocía tal calibración. The thesis contains a study of two problems of combinatorial statistics. The first one is structure learning for partial correlation graphs and the second one is the broadcasting problem on certain families of random recursive trees. In a precise language, the structure recovery problem that we study is the following: given access to individual entries of a covariance matrix S, learn the support of the inverse of S (let us denote this matrix by K) using only a small fraction of S. We call this problem ‘structure recovery’ since the zero-entries of K define the adjacency matrix of a graph (called partial correlation graph). As an example of why this is an important graph to learn, consider that S corresponds to a Gaussian random vector (X1, ..., Xn). Then an entry sij is zero if and only if Xi and Xj are independent given the rest of the random variables. A series of algorithms is proposed to address the aforementioned question, assuming that our graphs satisfy certain sparsity conditions. The sparsity that is assumed is related to how much our graph resembles a tree; in particular we deal with trees, graphs of small 2 connected components, and graphs of small treewidth. The proposed algorithms can also be used to estimate K and not only learn the partial correlation graph. Moreover, they can be used to invert any symmetric positive definite matrix since the analysis can be detached from its statistical connection and impact.The motivation for the use of covariance entries is that S might be too large to even store, as it often happens in statistical settings. In fact, our goal is to learn the partial correlation graph using sub-quadratic number of queries, since quadratic time is needed just to write down and store the covariance matrix – this is the starting point for a big part of the literature. The desired complexity bounds are achieved through our analysis. Moving to the second problem under study, we consider a broadcasting process on a graph to be the propagation of a message (let us say a bit value in {0, 1}) from one node to all the rest, possibly corrupted. Our goal is to guess the initial message. We consider that our graph is a tree and is created dynamically in times 0, 1..., n, in a way that at time i the i-th vertex enters the system and attaches with an edge to an existing vertex j (we then write i ~ j). We are interested in the case where i attaches uniformly at random to an existing vertex (uniform attachment) or where i attaches to a vertex with probability proportional to the outdegree of an existing vertex, plus some parameter ß > 0. The broadcasting process we consider is one where vertex 0 (the root) has a bit value that is propagated correctly to its neighbours with probability 1 - q and incorrectly with probability q. The broadcasting problem under study can be formulated in this way: given access to a random tree produced by either uniform attachment or preferential attachment and the bit values of the vertices, but without observing the time labels of the vertices, recover the bit of vertex zero. In a more difficult variant, we answer the same question given only the bits of vertices with outdegree zero (the leaves). In both variants of the problem in both models, we characterize the values of q for which the optimal reconstruction method has a probability of error bounded away from 1/2. We also show that the probability of error is bounded by a constant times q. Two simple reconstruction rules are analyzed in detail. One of them is the simple majority vote, the other is the bit value of the centroid of the tree (or the closest leaf to the centroid). We also analyze a third reconstruction rule which is more complex but works for all q where reconstruction is theoretically possible.<br>Aquesta tesi estudia dos problemes d'estadística combinatòria: l'aprenentatge d'estructura per a grafs de correlació parcial, i el problema de difusió en famílies d'arbres recursius aleatoris. Proposem una sèrie d'algorismes per estudiar la pregunta esmentada, assumint que els nostres grafs satisfan certes condicions de densitat. La densitat que s'assumeix està relacionada amb quant s'assembla el nostre graf a un arbre; en particular, tractem amb arbres, grafs amb components connexes suficientment petites, i grafs de petita amplada d'arbre. Els algorismes proposats també es poden utilitzar per estimar S i no només per aprendre el graf de correlació parcial. Finalment, les tècniques també es poden utilitzar per invertir qualsevol matriu simètrica definida positiva, ja que l'estudi es pot separar de la seva connexió estadística. La motivació per a l'ús d'entrades de covariància és que S pot ser massa gran per emmagatzemar-la, com passa sovint en configuracions estadístiques. De fet, el nostre objectiu és aprendre el graf de correlació parcial utilitzant el nombre subquadràtic de consultes, ja que el temps quadràtic és necessari només per a escriure i emmagatzemar la matriu de covariància: aquest és el punt de partida per a una gran part de la literatura. Els límits de complexitat desitjats s'aconsegueixen a través de la nostra anàlisi. En quant al segon problema, considerem que un procés de radiodifusió sobre un graf és la propagació d'un missatge (diguem un valor de bit a {0,1}) d'un node a tota la resta, possiblement corromput. El nostre objectiu és esbrinar el missatge inicial. Considerem que el nostre graf és un arbre i es crea dinàmicament en temps 0, 1, ..., n, de tal forma que en el temps i el vèrtex i-èssim entra al sistema i s'uneix amb una aresta a un vèrtex j existent (escrivim i~j). Estem interessats en el cas en què i s'adhereixi uniformement a l'atzar a un vèrtex existent (adjunt uniforme) o on s'hi connecti a un vèrtex amb probabilitat proporcional al grau de sortida d'un vèrtex existent, més algun paràmetre ß > 0. El procés de radiodifusió que considerem és un en què el vèrtex 0 (l'arrel) té un valor de bits que es propaga correctament als seus veïns amb probabilitat 1-q i incorrectament amb probabilitat q. El problema de la radiodifusió es pot formular d'aquesta manera: donat l'accés a un arbre aleatori produït per un adjunció uniforme, o per adjunció preferencial i els valors de bits dels vèrtexs, però sense observar les etiquetes de temps dels vèrtexs, recupereu el bit del vèrtex zero. En una variant més difícil, també es pretén estudiar-lo donat només els bits dels vèrtexs amb grau de sobre zero (les fulles). En les dues variants del problema, caracteritzem els valors de q per als quals el mètode de reconstrucció òptim té una probabilitat d'error limitat a 1/2. També demostrem que la probabilitat d'error està limitada per un múltiple constant de q. S'analitzen detalladament dues regles de reconstrucció senzilles: una d'elles és el vot per majoria simple, l'altre és el valor de bit del centroide de l'arbre (o la fulla més propera al centroide). Modelling of granular materials, soils and rocks has been a challenging topic of investigation for decades. Classical continuum mechanics has been used to idealize soils and rocks, and numerical solution techniques such as finite element method (FEM) has been used to model these materials. Considering the idealization of the material, continuum mechanics allows the analysis of phenomena with discontinuous nature such as fracture in rock or soil via damage models. However, in more complex processes like rock milling or crushing, this kind of models are usually not suitable. Discrete models are more appropriate for problems with multiple discontinuities and particulate materials. The discrete element method (DEM) has been gaining popularity in analysis of granular materials, soils and rocks. Many aspects of this method still require more profound investigation. This thesis presents new developments of the discrete element method improving effi ciency and accuracy of modelling of rock-like materials, especially in excavation processes. All the numerical algorithms has been implemented in an in-house software, which was then used to run numerical examples. The basic formulation of DEM with linear elastic-perfectly brittle contact model is presented. The main di erence with other models found in the literature is the consideration of global sti ness and strength parameters that are constants in the whole model. The result of a simulations is strongly related with the con guration of the particle assembly used. Particle assemblies should be su ciently compact and ensure the isotropy to reproduce the physical properties of the modelled material. This thesis presents a novel technique for the generation of highly dense particle assemblies in arbitrary geometries, satisfying all the requirements for accurate discrete element simulations. One of the key issues in the use of the DEM is the estimation of the contact model parameters. A methodology is proposed for the estimation of the contact model parameters yielding required macroscopic properties of the material. The relationships between the contact model parameters and the mechanical properties of brittle materials, as well as the influence of the particles assembly con guration on the macroscopic properties, are analysed. A major di culty in the application of the DEM to real engineering problems is the high computational cost in simulation involving a large number of particles. The most common way to solve this is the use of parallel computing techniques, where multiple processors are used. As an alternative, a coupling scheme between DEM and the finite element method (FEM) is proposed in the thesis. Within the hybrid DEM/FEM model, DEM is only used in the region of the domain where it provides an advantage over a continuum-based approach, as the FEM. The coupling is dynamically adapted, starting with the whole domain discretized with FEM. During the simulation, in the regions where a high stress level are found, a change of modelling method from continuum FEM to the discrete DEM is employed. Finally, all the developments are applied to the simulation of a real excavation process. An analysis of the rock cutting process with TBM disc cutters is performed, where DEM and the DEM/FEM coupling technique presents an important advantage over other simulation techniques.<br>La modelación de materiales granulares, terrenos y rocas ha sido un desafío para la investigación por décadas. La mecánica del continuo clásica ha sido utilizada para idealizar terrenos y rocas, y técnicas numéricas de solución, como el método de los elementos finitos (FEM), han sido usadas para modelar estos materiales. Considerando la idealización del material, la mecánica del continuo permite el análisis de fenómenos de naturaleza discontinua como la fractura en rocas y terreno mediante modelos de daño. Sin embargo, en procesos mas complejos como la molienda o trituración de roca, este tipo de modelos no suelen ser adecuados. Los modelos discretos son mas apropiados para problemas con múltiples discontinuidades y material particulado. El método de los elementos discretos (DEM) ha ido ganando popularidad en el análisis de materiales granulares, terrenos y rocas. Sin embargo, muchos aspectos de este método todavía requieren una investigación mas profunda. Esta tesis presenta nuevos desarrollos del método de los elementos discretos para mejorar su eficiencia y precisión en el modelado de materiales como roca, especialmente para procesos de excavación. Todos los algoritmos numéricos se han implementado en el programa propio, que ha sido utilizado para probar distintos ejemplos. La formulación básica del DEM, con un modelo lineal de contacto elástico perfectamente frágil ha sido utilizado en el presente trabajo. La principal diferencia con otros modelos de la literatura es la consideración de que los parámetros de rigidez y fuerzas máximas son valores globales y constantes en todo el modelo. El resultado de la simulación está fuertemente relacionado con la configuración del ensamblaje de partículas utilizado. El ensamblaje de partículas debe ser suficientemente compacto y asegurar la isotropía de las propiedades físicas del material modelado. La tesis presenta una nueva técnica para la generación de ensamblajes de partículas de alta densidad para geometrías arbitrarias, satisfaciendo todos los requisitos para una simulación con elementos discretos correcta. Uno de los temas clave en el uso del DEM es la estimación de los parámetros del modelo de contacto. Se propone una metodología para la estimación de los parámetros del modelo de contacto siguiendo las propiedades macroscópicas requeridas en el material Las relaciones entre los parámetros del modelo y las propiedades mecánicas de materiales frágiles, así como su la influencia de la configuración del ensamblaje de partículas son analizadas. Una gran dificultad en la aplicación del DEM en problemas reales de ingeniería es el alto costo computacional de simulaciones que consideran un gran número de partículas. La solución mas común para resolver esto es el uso de técnicas de computación paralela, donde se utiliza un gran número de procesadores. Como vía alternativa, un esquema acoplado entre el DEM y el FEM expuesto en la tesis. Con el modelo híbrido DEM/FEM, el DEM es usado solo en las partes del dominio donde presenta ventajas sobre el enfoque continuo del FEM. El acoplamiento puede ser adaptado dinámicamente, comenzando con todo el dominio discretizado con FEM, y durante la simulación, en las regiones donde se encuentran altos niveles de tensión, se emplea un cambio del método de simulación de continuo (FEM) a discreto (DEM). Finalmente, todos los desarrollos son aplicados a la simulación de un proceso excavación real. Se realiza un estudio del proceso de corte de roca con discos costadores, utilizados en tuneladoras, donde el DEM y la técnica de acoplamiento presentan una importante ventaja sobre otras técnicas de simulación.

DE LA TESIS:<br/><br/>El contenido de esta tesis se enmarca dentro del Análisis Real. En particular, trata del estudio de ciertos problemas de la teoría de pesos, (una referencia clásica sobre esta teoría es el libro de J. García-Cuerva y J.L. Rubio de Francia [GR]). Nosotros consideramos, por este orden, tres problemas clásicos diferentes, que abarcan buena parte de la teoría de pesos:<br/><br/>(i) Estudio de las inclusiones para espacios con pesos y acotación de operadores integrales entre estos espacios.<br/><br/>(ii) Estudio de propiedades funcionales de espacios con pesos asociados a una reordenada decreciente de funciones.<br/><br/>(iii) Estudio de la acotación de operadores maximales asociados a regiones de aproximación entre espacios con pesos.<br/><br/>Todos estos problemas han sido tratados extensamente en la literatura. Nuestro enfoque ha sido el de extender estos resultados a espacios con la mínima estructura necesaria. Concretamente, hemos trabajado respectivamente en cada capítulo en los siguientes contextos:<br/><br/>(i) Espacios de medida arbitrarios.<br/><br/>(ii) Árboles.<br/><br/>(iii) Espacios de tipo homogéneo.<br/><br/>Puesto que un árbol puede ser a su vez un espacio de medida, o puesto que su frontera puede ser un espacio de tipo homogéneo, algunos resultados para espacios de medida y espacios de tipo homogéneo han sido aplicados a los árboles (véanse los capítulos primero y tercero). En cambio, en el capítulo segundo trabajamos exclusivamente en árboles.<br/><br/>Los espacios donde hemos desarrollado nuestra teoría no poseen, en general, ningún tipo de estructura algebraica. Por tanto, todos los resultados persiguen un objetivo común: la extensión de la teoría de pesos a espacios no euclidianos.

The first contribution of this Thesis is the creation of a new risk measure that allows to classify the clients according to the risk that they bring to the company. This measure defined from the aggregate information at the client level is easy to understand, implement and also takes into account the propensity to renew, the claims and the relationship between the different policies subscribed by the insured. Subsequently we focus on one of the factors that affect the risk measure defined previously, specifically in the analysis of the propensity to renewal, which is the second contribution of this work. First, from an univariate point of view and for two different lines of business, which are assumed independent of each other - Home and Motor -, the predictive capacity of different alternative churn prediction models is evaluated according to different adjustment criteria ("churn models" are those that allow evaluating the probability that clients cancel their policies and leave the company). A comparative analysis is established between a classic univariate regression model and two machine learning models. The adjustment criteria proposed in this part represent a simple and practical tool in order to choose the threshold from which it is possible to classify clients according to their propensity for renewal. The joint modeling for customer lapses (in more than one type of policy) can be considered as our third contribution. In this part we analyze the propensity to renew the policies of customers with two types of insured risks simultaneously. That is, we take into account the existence of dependence between lines of business and show how the existence of dependence affects decisions about renewal in both types of policy - Home and Motor. Our fourth contribution raises several reflections about the change that supposes for the insurance companies the digitalization of the information. In addition, we propose a practical application where, from the use of multinomial models, we obtain the simultaneous propensity to renew or not the policies that the same client has underwritten in the same company. The following contributions correspond to the second part of the Thesis and are directly related to the risk quantification in finance and insurance. In this sense, a first contribution consists of analyzing the effect that the selection of the dependency model has on the estimation of value at risk. In the same vein, the second contribution in this part analyzes the weaknesses and strengths of nonparametric methods in the quantification of risk.<br>La primera contribució d'aquesta Tesi és la creació d'una nova mesura de risc que permet classificar als clients en funció del risc que aquests aporten a la companyia. Aquesta mesura definida a partir de la informació agregada a nivell client és fàcil d'entendre, implementar i a més, té en compte la propensió a la renovació, la sinistralitat i la vinculació existent entre les diferents pòlisses contractades per l'assegurat. Posteriorment ens centrem en un dels factors que afecten la mesura de risc definida, concretament en l'anàlisi de la propensió a la renovació de les pòlisses, fet que suposa la segona contribució del treball. En primer lloc, des d'un punt de vista univariant i per a dues línies de negoci diferents, que s'assumeixen independents l'una de l'altra - Llar i Auto -, s'avalua la capacitat predictiva de diversos models de deserció alternatius en funció de diferents criteris de ajust (s'anomenen `` models de deserció '' a aquells que permeten avaluar la probabilitat que el client cancel¿li les seves pòlisses i abandoni la companyia). S'estableix una anàlisi comparativa entre un model clàssic de regressió univariant i dos models d'aprenentatge de màquines o machine learning. Els criteris d'ajust proposats en aquesta part representen una eina senzilla i pràctica per a l'elecció del nivell o threshold a partir del qual és possible classificar els clients segons la seva propensió a la renovació o no de les seves pòlisses. La modelització conjunta de la deserció (en més d'un tipus de pòlissa) pot ser considerada com la nostra tercera contribució. En aquesta part analitzem la propensió a la renovació de les pòlisses de clients amb dos tipus de riscos assegurats simultàniament. És a dir, tenim en compte la dependència que hi ha entre línies de negoci i mostrem l'efecte que suposa l'existència de dependència sobre les decisions de renovació en tots dos tipus de pòlissa -Llar i Auto-. La nostra quarta contribució planteja diverses reflexions sobre el canvi que suposa per a les companyies asseguradores la digitalització de la informació. A més, plantegem una aplicació pràctica on, a partir de l'ús de models multinomials, s'obté la propensió simultània a la renovació o no de les pòlisses que un mateix client té assegurades amb la mateixa companyia. Les contribucions següents corresponen a la segona part de la Tesi i estan directament relacionades amb la quantificació del risc en finances i assegurances. En aquest sentit, una primera aportació consisteix a analitzar l'efecte que té sobre l'estimació del valor en risc la selecció del model de dependència. En la mateixa línia, la nostra altra aportació en aquesta part analitza les debilitats i fortaleses dels mètodes no paramètrics en la quantificació del risc.<br>La primera contribución de esta Tesis es la creación de una nueva medida de riesgo que permite clasificar a los clientes en función del riesgo que ´estos aportan a la compañía. Esta medida definida a partir de la información agregada a nivel cliente es fácil de entender, implementar y además, tiene en cuenta la propensión a la renovación, la siniestralidad y la vinculación existente entre las diferentes pólizas contratadas por el asegurado. Posteriormente nos centramos en uno de los factores que afectan a la medida de riesgo definida, concretamente en el análisis de la propensión a la renovación de las pólizas, lo que supone la segunda contribución del trabajo. En primer lugar, desde un punto de vista univariante y para dos líneas de negocio diferentes, que se asumen independientes la una de la otra - Hogar y Auto -, se evalúa la capacidad predictiva de diversos modelos de deserción alternativos en función de distintos criterios de ajuste (se denominan “modelos de deserción” a aquellos que permiten evaluar la probabilidad de que el cliente cancele sus pólizas y abandone la compañía). Se establece un análisis comparativo entre un modelo clásico de regresión univariante y dos modelos de aprendizaje de máquinas o machine learning. Los criterios de ajuste propuestos en esta parte representan una herramienta sencilla y practica para la elección del threshold a partir del cual es posible clasificar a los clientes según su propensión a la renovación o no de sus pólizas. La modelización conjunta de la deserción (en más de un tipo de póliza) puede ser considerada como nuestra tercera contribución. En esta parte analizamos la propensión a la renovación de las pólizas de clientes con dos tipos de riesgos asegurados simultáneamente. Es decir, tenemos en cuenta la dependencia existente entre líneas de negocio y mostramos el efecto que supone la existencia de dependencia sobre las decisiones de renovación en ambos tipos de póliza -Hogar y Auto-. Nuestra cuarta contribución plantea diversas reflexiones sobre el cambio que supone para las compañías aseguradoras la digitalización de la información. Además, planteamos una aplicación práctica donde, a partir del uso de modelos multinomiales, se obtiene la propensión simultánea a la renovación o no de las pólizas que un mismo cliente tiene aseguradas con la misma compañía. Las contribuciones siguientes corresponden a la segunda parte de la Tesis y están directamente relacionadas con la cuantificación del riesgo en finanzas y seguros. En este sentido, una primera aportación consiste en analizar el efecto que tiene sobre la estimación del valor en riesgo la selección del modelo de dependencia. En la misma línea, nuestra otra aportación en esta parte analiza las debilidades y fortalezas de los métodos no paramétricos en la cuantificación del riesgo.

We live in a complexand interconnected world which permeates ditterent scales. sectors or decision problems. This fact is acknowledged by the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which underscores current global challenges, recognizes their interconnectivity and calls for international action. lt is recognized that the connected nature of the issues we currently face have been tackled by "silo" approaches, separating the complexities ofthe real-world into specialized disciplines. fields of research, institutions and ministries, each one focused on a fraction of the overall truth. Similarly, it is widely recognized the need of a major shift in decision-making processes towards more holistic and integrated approaches. Evidence-based decrsion-making involves complexprocesses ofconsidering a wide range of information of different nature. Nowadays, available data can support these processes, but methodologies to effectively integrate these data are lacking. With the aim to contribute in this direction, this thesis focuses on the increasing use of Bayesian Networks (BNs) modelling as an approach to accom m odate com plex problem s and to support decis ion-making. Com mon practica em ploys separately expert knowledge and empirical data to build and apply associated models. Des pite of the demonstrated utility of this practica, in an era where the data are bigger, faster and more detailed than even before, there is still room for further exploration. Thus, this dissertation proposes a data-driven Bayesian Networks approach to combine expert opinion and quantitative data to support informad decision-making. We propose two systematic methods to this end. First. we use our approach to replicate composite indicators (Cl)-based conceptual frameworks, which represent expert knowledge. through the use of structure learning algorithms, which characterizes this data-driven Bayesian Networks approach. Second, we use our approach to identify interlinkages associated with a complex context, coupled with a statistical technique (i.e. bootstrapping) to reduce results uncertainty and with a comprehensive result robustness analysis (i.e. expert knowledge). For testing and validating the proposed approach, this thesis takes the Sustainable Development Goal 6 embedded on the 2030 Agenda as a reference point, with particular attention to the water, sanitation and hygier:ie sector. Our results emphasize the likely utility of the data-driven Bayesian Networks approach adopted. First. it allows the integration of both expert knowledge and data availability when dealing with BNs modelling, and it accurately replicates (Cl)-based conceptual frameworks. As added values, this combination improves model inference capacity, it reduces and quantifies the key variables that explµin a pre-defined objective variable (implying important advantages in data updating), and it identifies the interlinkages among the variables considerad (which might enhance more integrated actions). Second, the approach adopted is useful to accommodate a thorough analysis and interpretation of the complexities and interdependencias of any context at hand. As added values, interlinkages identification is spurred on by the available data and this identification makes the approach more suitable than the use of composite indicators. Third, the systematic nature of the methodological contributions associated with the proposed approach can be adapted to different complexproblems. Thus, it might expand and deepen the knowledge about the validity, reliability and accuracy of using BNs modelling.<br>Vivimos en un mundo complejo e interconectado que impregna diferentes escalas. sectores o problemas de decisi ón. Por otro lado. es ampliamente reconocido que la naturaleza conectada de los problemas a los que nos enfrentamos actualmente se ha abordado mediante enfoques "estancos". separando las complejidades del mundo real en disciplinas especializadas. campos de investigación, instituciones y ministerios. cada uno centrado en una parte de la verdad. De igual manera. es reconocida la necesidad de un cambio de paradigma en los procesos de toma de decisiones hacia enfoques m ás holísticos e integrados. La toma de decisiones basada en evidencias lleva implícita procesos complejos en los que se integran una amplia gama de información de diferente naturaleza. Hoy en día, los datos cuantitativos disponibles pueden respaldar estos procesos. pero faltan metodologías para integrar estos datos de manera efectiva. Con el objetivo de contribuir en esta dirección, esta tesis se centra en el uso de modelos de Redes Bayesianas (BNs), como un enfoque válido para abordar problemas complejos y, en última instancia, para apoyar la toma de decisiones. En la práctica, se emplea comúnmente por separado el conocimiento de expertos y los datos empíricos para construir y aplicar estos modelos. A pesar de la utilidad de esta práctica, en una era en la que los datos son má¿ numerosos, más rápidos y más detallados que antes, hay espacio para explorar hasta dónde pueden llegar estos datos. En este sentido, esta tesis propone un enfoque de Redes Bayesianas basadas en los datos que permite combinar el conocimiento experto y la información cuantitativa existente para, en última instancia, apoyar la toma de decisiones. Se proponen dos métodos sistemáticos para tal fin. En primer lugar, se emplea dicho enfoque para replicar marcos conceptuales basados en indicadores compuestos (IC), que representan el conocimiento experto, mediante el uso de algoritmos de aprendizaje de estructuras, que caracteriza este enfoque de Redes Bayesianas basado en datos. En segundo lugar, se utiliza el enfoque propuesto para identificar las interrelaciones existentes dentro de un contexto complejo, junto con una técnica estadística (bootstrapping) para reducir la incertidumbre de los resultados y con un análisis bibliográfico exhaustivo (conocimiento experto) para demostrar la robustez de los resultados obtenidos. Para testear y validar el enfoque propuesto, esta tesis toma como punto de referencia el Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible 6 que forma parte de la Agenda 2030, con especial atención al sector del agua, saneamiento e higiene. Nuestros resultados ponen de manifiesto la potencial utilidad del enfoque adoptado. Primero, este enfoque permite la integración de conocimiento experto y de información cuantitativa a la hora de construir las RBs, y replica con precisión los marcos conceptuales basados en IC. Como valor añadido, esta combinación mejora la capacidad de inferencia del modelo, y reduce y cuantifica las variables clave que explican una variable objetivo predefinida. En segundo lugar, el enfoque adoptado es útil para dar cabida a un análisis e interpretación exhaustivos de las complejidades e interdependencias de cualquier contexto en cuestión. Como valor añadido, la identificación de las interconexiones se realiza exclusivamente en base a los datos disponibles. Considerar dichas interconexiones hace que este enfoque sea más adecuado que el uso de IC. En tercer lugar. la naturaleza sistemática dé las contribuciones metodológicas asociadas al enfoque propuesto puede adaptarse a diferentes problemas complejos. En este sentido, se considera que se contribuye a ampliar el conocimiento sobre la validez, fiabilidad y precisión del uso de modelos de Redes Bayesianas.<br>Enginyeria ambiental

In the last decades, the problem of the vibrations and the noise generated by the rolling and the undulatory wear has been approached by multiple research groups. These groups have developed studies with the intention of understanding and characterizing the vibrations problem, and its presented different analytical models. These models, for straight track sections, usually consider only half a track (single rail) in contact with a wheel suspended from the bogie through the primary suspension. Analytical models of half a track, although widely used, have the inconvenience of not considering the interaction between rails; that is to say the influence of the fluctuating contact force generated in a rail on the other rail vibration. Such interaction may occur through both the track structure and the axle of both wheels. Nowadays, and thanks to the computing power provided by the computers, research are leading to the development of numerical models enabling us to expand the fields of study such as the interaction between rails, the behavior of the wheel-rail contact in curved sections and the propagation in the surroundings. The main objective of the here presented thesis is to provide knowledge about the wheel-rail contact problem and the generation of vibrations that it causes, developing numerical models based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). Therefore we have used the ANSYS 13 program, analyzing all its capacities and using some of them in new ways. In order to analyze in detail the behavior of the interaction between a track and a railway vehicle, in the first part of this thesis we have developed and validated diverse numerical models of a railway track based on the finite elements method, oriented toward characterizing the vibrations generation. In the second part of the thesis we have developed a numerical model for the characterization of the set railway axle-primary suspension, meaning by railway axle the one composed of two wheels fixed to their axle. We have sought the simplest possible model fulfilling the necessary requirements to reproduce the set vibratory behavior. In the last part of the work, we combine the track numerical models with the model of the set axle-primary suspension to create a global model that allows simulating the mechanism of the wheel-rail contact force generation. To describe the contact we have used nonlinear Hertz theory. The results obtained when numerically integrating the equations of the global model using ANSYS transient analysis, are compared with the results provided by the analytical models of half a track in contact with a single wheel attached to the primary suspension. The comparison of these results for two types of tracks shows a very good conformity. With the numerical global model, we have analyzed the vibratory behavior of a classical ballasted track and two types of slab track, the DFF railway track and the Stedef twinblock railway track, all of them railway track types widely used in the Metropolitan Railroad of Barcelona. Finally, thanks to the results provided by the global model of contact, we conclude that the interaction between the mechanisms of the contact force generation present in both rails is significant, the interaction occurring mainly through the axle-wheels set. This result by itself justifies the need for numerical modeling of full track-railway axle contact. As a general conclusion we can say that the results demonstrate that the developed methodology is able to predict the time history of the normal contact force in different locations of the various studied track types.<br>En las últimas décadas, el problema de las vibraciones y el ruido generados por la rodadura y el desgaste ondulatorio ha sido abordado por múltiples grupos de investigación. Estos grupos han desarrollado estudios con la intención de comprender y caracterizar el problema de las vibraciones, y han presentado diferentes modelos analíticos. Dichos modelos, para tramos de vía rectos, suelen considerar solo media vía en contacto con una rueda suspendida del bogie por medio de la suspensión primaria. Los modelos analíticos de media vía, si bien han sido ampliamente utilizados, presentan el inconveniente de no considerar la interacción entre carriles; es decir la influencia de la fuerza fluctuante de contacto generada en un carril sobre la vibración en el otro carril. Esta interacción se puede producir tanto a través de la estructura de la vía como a través del eje de ambas ruedas. En la actualidad, y gracias a la potencia de cálculo que proporcionan los ordenadores, las investigaciones se dirigen al desarrollo de modelos numéricos que permitan ampliar los campos de estudio como por ejemplo la interacción entre carriles, el comportamiento del contacto rueda-carril en tramos curvos y la propagación al entorno. El objetivo principal de la tesis que se presenta es aportar conocimiento sobre el problema del contacto rueda-carril y la generación de vibraciones que comporta, desarrollando modelos numéricos basados en el Método de Elementos Finitos (FEM). Para ello se ha utilizado el programa ANSYS 13, analizando todas sus capacidades y utilizando algunas de ellas de forma novedosa. Con el fin de analizar con más detalle el comportamiento de la interacción entre una vía completa y un vehículo ferroviario, en la primera parte de esta tesis se han desarrollado y validado diversos modelos numéricos de vía completa basados en el método de elementos finitos, orientados a la caracterización de la generación de vibraciones. En la segunda parte de la tesis se ha elaborado un modelo numérico para la caracterización del conjunto eje ferroviario-suspensión primaria, entendiendo por eje ferroviario el formado por dos ruedas unidas con su eje. Se ha buscado el modelo más simple posible que cumple con los requerimientos necesarios para reproducir el comportamiento vibratorio del conjunto. En la última parte del trabajo, se combinan los modelos numéricos de vía con el modelo del conjunto eje-suspensión para crear un modelo global que permite simular el mecanismo de generación de la fuerza de contacto rueda-carril. Para describir el contacto se ha utilizado la teoría no lineal de Hertz. Los resultados obtenidos al integrar numéricamente las ecuaciones del modelo global mediante el análisis transitorio de ANSYS, se comparan con los resultados que proporcionan modelos analíticos de media vía en contacto con una única rueda sujeta a la suspensión primaria. La comparación de estos resultados para dos tipos de vía, muestra una muy buena concordancia. Con el modelo numérico global, se ha analizado el comportamiento vibratorio de una vía clásica sobre balasto y dos tipos de vía en placa, la vía DFF y la vía bibloque con riostra, todos ellos tipos de vía ampliamente utilizados en el Ferrocarril Metropolitano de Barcelona. Finalmente, gracias a los resultados proporcionados por el modelo global de contacto, se llega a la conclusión que la interacción entre los mecanismos de generación de la fuerza de contacto presentes en ambos carriles es significativa, produciéndose la interacción principalmente a través del conjunto eje-ruedas. Este resultado justifica por sí solo la necesidad de utilizar modelos numéricos de contacto vía completa-eje ferroviario. Como conclusión general cabe decir que los resultados obtenidos demuestran que la metodología desarrollada es capaz de predecir la historia temporal de la fuerza normal de contacto en diferentes localizaciones de los diversos tipos de vías estudiados<br>Depuis leurs débuts, les chemins de fer ont présenté le problème des vibrations et du bruit générés par le roulement. Ce problème trouve son origine principalement dans les fluctuations de la force de contact roue-rail, les fluctuations générées par les irrégularités que présente la bande de roulement des roues et par les irrégularités des rails, telles que la présence de joints et l'usure ondulatoire. Dans le cas des chemins de fer métropolitains, les vibrations et le bruit produisent un impact environnemental significatif en raison de leur proximité aux zones habitées. Les vibrations se propagent de la voie à la structure du tunnel, et de là vers les bâtiments voisins provoquant des nuisances, et dans des cas extrêmes, des dommages dans les bâtiments. En outre, il faut aussi garder à l'esprit que les vibrations provoquent aussi des problèmes de fatigue et d'usure dans le matériel roulant, un facteur critique pour la sécurité des voyageurs. Au cours des dernières décennies, le problème cité ci-dessus a été abordée par de nombreux groupes de recherche. Ces groupes ont mené des études dans le but de comprendre et caractériser le problème des vibrations générées par le roulement, et ont présenté divers modèles analytiques. Ces modèles, pour des sections de voies droites, ne considèrent généralement que demi-voie (un rail) en contact avec une roue suspendue du bogie au moyen de la suspension primaire. Les modèles analytiques de demi-voie, bien que largement utilisés, présentent l'inconvénient de ne pas considérer l'interaction entre les rails; à savoir l'influence de la force fluctuante de contact générée dans un rail sur la vibration dans l'autre rail. Cette interaction se produit tant à travers la structure de la voie comme à travers l'axe des deux roues. Actuellement, et grâce à la puissance de calcul que fournissent les ordinateurs, les recherches se dirigent vers le développement de modèles numériques qui permettent d'agrandir les champs d'étude comme par exemple l'interaction entre des rails, le comportement du contact roue-rail dans des tronçons courbes et la propagation à l'environnement.<br>Des de els seus inicis, els ferrocarrils han presentat el problema de les vibracions i el soroll generats pel rodolament. Aquest problema es produeix principalment per causa de les fluctuacions de la força de contacte roda-carril, fluctuacions generades per les irregularitats del perfil de les rodes i per les irregularitats del cap dels carrils, com ara la presència de juntes i el desgast ondulatori. En el cas dels ferrocarrils metropolitans, les vibracions i el soroll produeixen un impacte ambiental significatiu per la proximitat a zones habitades. Les vibracions es propaguen de la via a la infraestructura, que pot ser una base o un túnel, i d’ella als edificis propers causant molèsties i, en casos extrems, desperfectes en els edificis. A més, cal pensar que les vibracions originen problemes de fatiga i desgast en el material mòbil, factor a tenir en compte de cara a la seguretat dels passatgers. En les darreres dècades, el problema esmentat ha estat tractat per molts grups de recerca. Aquests grups han desenvolupat estudis per tal d’entendre i caracteritzar el problema de les vibracions generades pel rodolament, i han presentat diferents models analítics. Aquests models, pensats per a trams de via rectes, acostumen a considerar només mitja via en contacte amb una roda suspesa del bogie per mitjà de la suspensió primària. Els models analítics de mitja via, si bé han estat àmpliament emprats, presenten l’inconvenient de no considerar la interacció entre carrils; es a dir la influència de la força fluctuant de contacte generada en un carril sobre la vibració en l’altre carril. Aquesta interacció es pot produir tant a través de l’estructura de la via com a través de l’eix de les rodes. Actualment, i gràcies a la potència de càlcul que proporcionen els ordinadors, la recerca s’orienta cap el desenvolupament de models numèrics que permeten ampliar els camps d’estudi como ara la interacció entre carrils, el comportament del contacte roda-carril en trams en corba i la propagació a l’entorn. L’objectiu principal de la tesi que es presenta és aportar coneixement sobre el problema del contacte roda-carril i la generació de vibracions que comporta, desenvolupant models numèrics basats en el Mètode dels Elements Finits (FEM). Per això s’ha emprat el programa comercial ANSYS 13, analitzant totes les seves capacitats i fent servir algunes d’elles de forma inèdita. Amb la intenció d’analitzar en detall el comportament de la interacció entre una via sencera i un vehicle ferroviari, en la primera part de la tesi es desenvolupen i validen diversos models numèrics de via sencera basats en el Mètode dels Elements Finits, enfocats a la caracterització de la generació de vibracions. Els resultats obtinguts amb els models numèrics, presentats en forma de resposta freqüencial de la via, es comparen amb resultats de models analítics desenvolupats amb anterioritat, i també amb resultats experimentals obtinguts per a dos tipus de via. Per a la comprovació experimental, s’ha disposat de la col·laboració de l’empresa del Ferrocarril Metropolità de Barcelona. En la segona part de la tesi s’ha elaborat un model numèric per a la caracterització del conjunt eix ferroviari-suspensió primària, entenent com a eix ferroviari el conjunt format per dues rodes amb el seu eix. S’ha cercat el model més simple possible que compleix amb els requeriments necessaris per a reproduir el comportament vibratori del conjunt. En la darrera part del treball, es combinen els models numèrics de via amb el model del conjunt eix-suspensió per a obtenir un model global que permeti simular el mecanisme de generació de la força de contacte roda-carril. Per a descriure el contacte, s’ha emprat la teoria no lineal de Hertz. Els resultats obtinguts quan s’integren numèricament les equacions del model global mitjançant l’anàlisi transitori d’ANSYS, se comparen amb els resultats que proporcionen models analítics de mitja via en contacte amb una única roda fixada a la suspensió primària. Aquests models han estat desenvolupats per altres membres del grup de recerca GREVTAM del Departament d’Enginyeria Mecànica de la UPC dins del qual s’inscriu aquesta tesi. La comparació d’aquests resultats per a dos tipus de via mostra una molt bona concordança. Amb aquest model numèric global, s’ha analitzat el comportament vibratori d’una via clàssica sobre balast i dos tipus de via en placa, la via DFF i la via bibloc amb riosta, tots ells tipus de via molt emprats en el Ferrocarril Metropolità de Barcelona. Finalment, gràcies als resultats obtinguts amb el model global de contacte, s’ha arribat a la conclusió que la interacció entre els mecanismes de generació de la força de contacte presents en ambdós carrils és significativa, produint-se la interacció principalment a través del conjunt eix-rodes. Aquest resultat justifica per sí mateix la necessitat d’emprar models numèrics de contacte via sencera-eix ferroviari. Com a conclusió general cal dir que els resultats obtinguts demostren que la metodologia desenvolupada permet preveure la història temporal de la força normal de contacte en diferents localitzacions dels diferents tipus de via estudiats.

We present a cell-centred model for the simulation of multicellular soft tissues that takes into account the underlying active process at the cytoskeletal level, and allows for active and passive cell-cell reorganisation and intercalation. In the cell centred model, each cell is treated as a discrete entity and adjacent cell centres are connected by bar elements holding the rheological properties of cell-cell interactions. Cell-cell connectivity is determined with Delaunay triangulation of the cell-centres (nuclei). We use Voronoi tessellation and barycentric tessellation in order to represent the cell domains. We develop a viscoelastic bar element that can handle multiple rheological laws with non-linear elastic and non-linear viscous material models. The bar element is built by joining in series an elastic and viscous bar, constraining the middle node position to the bar axis with a reduction method, and statically condensing the internal degrees of freedom. Also, we develop a new rheological model based on dynamical changes of the resting length which mimics the viscoelastic response. It has been experimentally observed that cells exhibit a fluidisation process when subjected to a transient stretch, with an eventual recovery of the mechanical properties upon removal of the applied deformation. This fluidisation process is characterised by a decrease of the stored modulus and an increase of the phase angle. We propose a rheological model which is able to reproduce this combined mechanical response. The model is described in the context of continua and adapted to a cell-centred particle system that simulates the cell-cell interaction. Mechanical equilibrium is coupled with two evolution laws: (i) one for the reference configuration, and (ii) another for the porosity or polymer density. The first law depends on the actual elastic strain of the tissue, while the second assumes different remodelling rates during porosity increase and decrease. The theory is implemented on the particle based model and tested on a stretching numerical simulation, which agrees with the experimental measurements for different stretching magnitudes. The rheological law is also applied to simulate the stress relaxation that suspended monolayers undergo when subjected to a constant stretch. The numerical model is here applied on in multiple branches, so that the response with different characteristic times is reproduced. By using Delaunay triangulations and Voronoi tessellations, the model presented in this thesis also opens the possibility to test different combined rheological laws in cytoskeletal and cortical regions of cellular networks.<br>Los tejidos activos muestran un comportamiento poroelástico, reblandecimiento, endurecimiento y fluidización reversible. El resultado de este comportamiento no lineal es debido a los múltiples procesos que tienen lugar a distintas escalas: proteínas motoras activas que actúan sobre la estructura polimérica de la célula, (de-)polimerización y remodelado del citoesqueleto, cambios en el volumen del citoplasma y cambios de la conectividad entre células a nivel del tejido. El objetivo principal de esta tesis es entender las propiedades mecánicas de los tejidos blandos al estar sometidos a un proceso de fluidización y relajación. Para conseguir este objetivo, se desarrolla una teoría matemática y métodos de simulación que reproducen las observaciones experimentales. Se presenta un modelo centrado en la célula par la simulación de tejidos multicelulares blandos que tiene en cuenta los procesos activos en el citoesqueleto, y permite la reorganización e intercalación activa y pasiva entre células. En el modelo centrado, cada célula se considera una entidad discreta a la cual las células adyacentes se conectan mediante elementos barra que contienen las propiedades reológicas de la interacción celular. La conectividad entre células se determina per medio de una triangulación de Delaunay de los núcleos de los centros celulares (núcleos). Se recurre a un teselado de Voronoi y a uno usando los baricentros de la triangulación para representar los dominios de las células. Se desarrolla un elemento de barra viscoelástico que puede incorporar múltiples leyes reológicas con modelos elásticos y viscosos no lineales. El elemento se construye a partir dela unión en serie de elementos elásticos y viscosos, restringiendo la posición del nodo interno a estar en el eje de la barra, y recurriendo a la condensación estática de los grados de libertad internos. Además, se desarrolla un nuevo modelo reológico basado en los cambios dinámicos de la longitud de reposo que mimetiza la respuesta viscoelástica. Se ha observado experimentalmente que las células muestran un proceso de fluidización cuando están sujetas a un estiramiento transitorio, y que recobran sus propiedades mecánicas al desaparecer la deformación impuesta. Este proceso de fluidización se caracteriza por una reducción del módulo de rigidez elástico (stored modulus) y un incremento del ángulo de fase. Se propone un modelo reológico que permite reproducir esta respuesta mecánica combinada. El modelo se describe en el contexto del medio continuo y adaptado al sistema de partículas centrado en las células que simula la interacción intercelular. El equilibrio mecánico se acopla con dos leyes de evolución: (i) una para la configuración de referencia, y (ii) para la porosidad o densidad polimérica. La primera ley depende en la deformación elástica del tejido, mientras que la segunda sume distintas velocidades de deformación durante el incremento y decremento de porosidad. La teoría se implementa en el modelo de partículas y aplicado en una simulación numérica. Los resultados se ajustan a las medidas experimentales para distintos valores del alargamiento máximo. La ley reológica es utilizada también para simular la relajación de tensiones de una monocapa creada en suspensión y sujeta a una deformación constante. El modelo numérico se aplica a distintas ramas para reproducir la respuesta con distintos tiempos característicos. Mediante el uso de triangulaciones de Delaunay y teselados de Voronoi, el modelo presentado en esta tesis abre la posibilidad de combinar distintas leyes reológicas en regiones del citosequeleto y del córtex celular.

The need of ensure the proper performance of the structures in service has made of structural health monitoring (SHM) a priority research area. Researchers all around the world have focused efforts on the development of new ways to continuous monitoring the structures and analyze the data collected from the inspection process in order to provide information about the current state and avoid possible catastrophes. To perform an effective analysis of the data, the development of methodologies is crucial in order to assess the structures with a low computational cost and with a high reliability. These desirable features can be found in biological systems, and these can be emulated by means of computational systems. The use of bio-inspired algorithms is a recent approach that has demonstrated its effectiveness in data analysis in different areas. Since these algorithms are based in the emulation of biological systems that have demonstrated its effectiveness for several generations, it is possible to mimic the evolution process and its adaptability characteristics by using computational algorithms. Specially in pattern recognition, several algorithms have shown good performance. Some widely used examples are the neural networks, the fuzzy systems and the genetic algorithms. This thesis is concerned about the development of bio-inspired methodologies for structural damage detection and classification. This document is organized in five chapters. First, an overview of the problem statement, the objectives, general results, a brief theoretical background and the description of the different experimental setups are included in Chapter 1 (Introduction). Chapters 2 to 4 include the journal papers published by the author of this thesis. The discussion of the results, some conclusions and the future work can be found on Chapter 5. Finally, Appendix A includes other contributions such as a book chapter and some conference papers.<br>La necesidad de asegurar el correcto funcionamiento de las estructuras en servicio ha hecho de la monitorización de la integridad estructural un área de gran interés. Investigadores en todas las partes del mundo centran sus esfuerzos en el desarrollo de nuevas formas de monitorización contínua de estructuras que permitan analizar e interpretar los datos recogidos durante el proceso de inspección con el objetivo de proveer información sobre el estado actual de la estructura y evitar posibles catástrofes. Para desarrollar un análisis efectivo de los datos, es necesario el desarrollo de metodologías para inspeccionar la estructura con un bajo coste computacional y alta fiabilidad. Estas características deseadas pueden ser encontradas en los sistemas biológicos y pueden ser emuladas mediante herramientas computacionales. El uso de algoritmos bio-inspirados es una reciente técnica que ha demostrado su efectividad en el análisis de datos en diferentes áreas. Dado que estos algoritmos se basan en la emulación de sistemas biológicos que han demostrado su efectividad a lo largo de muchas generaciones, es posible imitar el proceso de evolución y sus características de adaptabilidad al medio usando algoritmos computacionales. Esto es así, especialmente, en reconocimiento de patrones, donde muchos de estos algoritmos brindan excelentes resultados. Algunos ejemplos ampliamente usados son las redes neuronales, los sistemas fuzzy y los algoritmos genéticos. Esta tesis involucra el desarrollo de unas metodologías bio-inspiradas para la detección y clasificación de daños estructurales. El documento está organizado en cinco capítulos. En primer lugar, se incluye una descripción general del problema, los objetivos del trabajo, los resultados obtenidos, un breve marco conceptual y la descripción de los diferentes escenarios experimentales en el Capítulo 1 (Introducción). Los Capítulos 2 a 4 incluyen los artículos publicados en diferentes revistas indexadas. La revisión de los resultados, conclusiones y el trabajo futuro se encuentra en el Capítulo 5. Lipid membranes are thin objects that form the main separation structure in cells. They have remarkable mechanical properties; while behaving as a solid shell against bending, they exhibit in-plane fluidity. These two aspects of their mechanics are not only interesting from a physical viewpoint, but also fundamental for their biological function. Indeed, the equilibrium shapes of different organelles in the cell rely on the bending elasticity of lipid membranes. On the other hand, the in-plane fluidity of the membrane is essential in functions such as cell motility, mechano-adaptation, or for the lateral diffusion of proteins and other membrane inclusions. The bending rigidity of membranes can be motivated from microscopic models that account for the stress distribution across the membrane thickness. In particular, the microscopic stress across the membrane is routinely computed from molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how different microscopic features, such as the addition of anesthetics or cholesterol, affect their effective mechanical response. The microscopic stress bridges the gap between the statistical mechanics of a set of point particles, the atoms in a molecular dynamics simulation, and continuum mechanics models. However, we lack an unambiguous definition of the microscopic stress, and different definitions of the microscopic stress suggest different connections between molecular and continuum models. In the first Part of this Thesis, we show that many of the existing definitions of the microscopic stress do not satisfy the most basic balance laws of continuum mechanics, and thus are not physically meaningful. This striking issue has motivated us to propose a new definition of the microscopic stress that complies with these fundamental balance laws. Furthermore, we provide a freely available implementation of our stress definition that can be computed from molecular dynamics simulations (mdstress.org). Our definition of the stress along with our implementation provides a foundation for a meaningful analysis of molecular dynamics simulations from a continuum viewpoint. In addition to lipid membranes, we show the application of our methodology to other important systems, such as defective crystals or fibrous proteins. In the second part of the Thesis, we focus on the continuum modeling of lipid membranes. Because these membranes are continuously brought out-of-equilibrium by biological activity, it is important to go beyond curvature elasticity and describe the internal mechanisms associated with bilayer fluidity. We develop a three-dimensional and non-linear theory and a simulation methodology for the mechanics of lipid membranes, which have been lacking in the field. We base our approach on a general framework for the mechanics of dissipative systems, Onsager's variational principle, and on a careful formulation of the kinematics and balance principles for fluid surfaces. For the simulation of our models, we follow a finite element approach that, however, requires of unconventional dicretization methods due to the non-linear coupling between shape changes and tangent flows on fluid surfaces. Our formulation provides the basis for further investigations of the out-of-equilibrium chemo-mechanics of lipid membranes and other fluid surfaces, such as the cell cortex.<br>Las membranas lipídicas son estructuras delgadas que forman la separación fundamental de las células. Tienen propiedades físicas notables: mientras que se comportan como láminas delgadas sólidas frente a curvatura, presentan fluidez interfacial. Estos dos aspectos de su mecánica son interesantes desde un punto de vista físico e ingenieril, pero además son fundamentales para su función biológica. Las formas de equilibrio de diferentes organelos celulares dependen de la elasticidad frente a curvatura de la membrana lipídica. Por otro lado, la fluidez interfacial es esencial en funciones como la movilidad celular, la adaptación mecánica a deformaciones, o para la difusión lateral de proteínas. La elasticidad frente a curvatura de las membranas lipídicas puede motivarse a través de modelos microscópicos que tienen en cuenta la distribución de esfuerzos a lo largo del espesor de la membrana. En particular, el tensor de esfuerzos microscópico se calcula habitualmente en simulaciones de dinámica molecular a lo largo del espesor de la membrana para investigar cómo diferentes características microscópicas, como la adición de anestésicos o colesterol, afecta la respuesta mecánica efectiva. El tensor de esfuerzos microscópico tiende un puente entre la mecánica estadística de un conjunto de partículas puntuales, los átomos de una simulación de dinámica molecular, y modelos de mecánica de medios continuos. Sin embargo, no disponemos de una definición única del tensor de esfuerzos microscópico, y diferentes definiciones dan lugar a diferentes interpretaciones de la conexión entre modelos moleculares y continuos. En la primera parte de la tesis, mostramos que muchas de las definiciones del tensor de esfuerzos microscópico no satisfacen las leyes más básicas de la mecánica de medios continuos, y por tanto no son físicamente relevantes. Este problema nos ha motivado a proponer una nueva definición del tensor de esfuerzos microscópicos que cumpla las leyes fundamentales de la mecánica de medios continuos por construcción. Además, hemos desarrollado (y puesto a disposición del público libremente) una implementación numérica de nuestra definición del tensor de esfuerzos microscópico que puede calcularse mediante simulaciones de dinámica molecular (mdstress.org). Nuestra definición del tensor de esfuerzos, así como nuestra implementación del mismo, proporcionan una base sólida para el análisis de simulaciones de dinámica molecular desde un punto de vista continuo. Además de membranas lipídicas, mostramos la aplicación de nuestro método en otros sistemas relevantes, como cristales con defectos o proteínas fibrosas. En la segunda parte de esta tesis nos hemos focalizado en el modelado continuo de membranas lipídicas. Ya que estas membranas están constantemente sufriendo actividad biológica que las lleva fuera de equilibrio, es importante tener en cuenta no sólo la elasticidad de curvatura, sino también los grados de libertad internos asociados a la fluidez de la membrana. Para ello, desarrollamos un nuevo marco teórico y computacional general, tridimensional y no-lineal, para la mecánica de membranas lipídicas. Nuestro enfoque se basa en un marco general para la mecánica de sistemas disipativos, el principio variacional de Onsager, y en una formulación cuidadosa de la cinemática y las ecuaciones de balance para superficies fluídas. Para la simulación de nuestros modelos, seguimos una aproximación basada en elementos finitos que, sin embargo, requiere de métodos no convencionales debido al acoplamiento no-lineal entre cambios de forma y los campos de velocidad tangentes en superficies fluídas. Nuestra formulación proporciona la base para futuras investigaciones de la quimiomecánica fuera de equilibrio de membranas lipídicas y otras superficies fluídas, como el cortex celular

The main object of study of this thesis is the development of scalable and robust solvers based on domain decomposition (DD) methods for the linear systems arising from the finite element (FE) discretization of transient and electromagnetic problems. The thesis commences with a theoretical review of the curl-conforming edge (or Nédélec) FEs of the first kind and a comprehensive description of a general implementation strategy for h- and p- adaptive elements of arbitrary order on tetrahedral and hexahedral non-conforming meshes. Then, a novel balancing domain decomposition by constraints (BDDC) preconditioner that is robust for multi-material and/or heterogeneous problems posed in curl-conforming spaces is presented. The new method, in contrast to existent approaches, is based on the definition of the ingredients of the preconditioner according to the physical coefficients of the problem and does not require spectral information. The result is a robust and highly scalable preconditioner that preserves the simplicity of the original BDDC method. When dealing with transient problems, the time direction offers itself an opportunity for further parallelization. Aiming to design scalable space-time solvers, first, parallel-in-time parallel methods for linear and non-linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are proposed, based on (non-linear) Schur complement efficient solvers of a multilevel partition of the time interval. Then, these ideas are combined with DD concepts in order to design a two-level preconditioner as an extension to space-time of the BDDC method. The key ingredients for these new methods are defined such that they preserve the time causality, i.e., information only travels from the past to the future. The proposed schemes are weakly scalable in time and space-time, i.e., one can efficiently exploit increasing computational resources to solve more time steps in (approximately) the same time-to-solution. All the developments presented herein are motivated by the driving application of the thesis, the 3D simulation of the low-frequency electromagnetic response of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS). Throughout the document, an exhaustive set of numerical experiments, which includes the simulation of a realistic 3D HTS problem, is performed in order to validate the suitability and assess the parallel performance of the High Performance Computing (HPC) implementation of the proposed algorithms.<br>L’objecte principal d’estudi d’aquesta tesi és el desenvolupament de solucionadors escalables i robustos basats en mètodes de descomposició de dominis (DD) per a sistemes lineals que sorgeixen en la discretització mitjançant elements finits (FE) de problemes transitoris i electromagnètics. La tesi comença amb una revisió teòrica dels FE d’eix (o de Nédélec) de la primera família i una descripció exhaustiva d’una estratègia d’implementació general per a elements h- i p-adaptatius d’ordre arbitrari en malles de tetraedres i hexaedres noconformes. Llavors, es presenta un nou precondicionador de descomposició de dominis balancejats per restricció (BDDC) que és robust per a problemes amb múltiples materials i/o heterogenis definits en espais curl-conformes. El nou mètode, en contrast amb els enfocaments existents, està basat en la definició dels ingredients del precondicionador segons els coeficients físics del problema i no requereix informació espectral. El resultat és un precondicionador robust i escalable que preserva la simplicitat del mètode original BDDC. Quan tractem amb problemes transitoris, la direcció temporal ofereix ella mateixa l’oportunitat de seguir explotant paral·lelisme. Amb l’objectiu de dissenyar precondicionadors en espai-temps, primer, proposem solucionadors paral·lels en temps per equacions diferencials lineals i no-lineals, basats en un solucionador eficient del complement de Schur d’una partició multinivell de l’interval de temps. Seguidament, aquestes idees es combinen amb conceptes de DD amb l’objectiu de dissenyar precondicionadors com a extensió a espai-temps dels mètodes de BDDC. Els ingredients clau d’aquests nous mètodes es defineixen de tal manera que preserven la causalitat del temps, on la informació només viatja de temps passats a temps futurs. Els esquemes proposats són dèbilment escalables en temps i en espai-temps, és a dir, es poden explotar eficientment recursos computacionals creixents per resoldre més passos de temps en (aproximadament) el mateix temps transcorregut de càlcul. Tots els desenvolupaments presentats aquí són motivats pel problema d’aplicació de la tesi, la simulació de la resposta electromagnètica de baixa freqüència dels superconductors d’alta temperatura (HTS) en 3D. Al llarg del document, es realitza un conjunt exhaustiu d’experiments numèrics, els quals inclouen la simulació d’un problema de HTS realista en 3D, per validar la idoneïtat i el rendiment paral·lel de la implementació per a computació d’alt rendiment dels algorismes proposats

This works has been organized in three parts. The first (Chapter 1 to 5) is dedicated to the development and study of a procedure for the accurate computation of frequencies, as well ans the related Fourier coefficients, of a quasi-periodical funcition. The second part of the work (Chapters 6 to 7) is devoted to the study to the dynamics in the vicinity of the collinear equilibrium points of the three-dimensional RTBP fo the Earth-Moon mass parameter. The third part consists in several appendices, which give some additional results that have been taken apart from the main text in order to improve its readability.

Se consideran familias de difeomorfismos con un punto fijo parabólico para el valor cero del parámetro y un punto fijo hiperbólico para valores mayores que cero que tengan en este caso puntos homoclínicos asociados a las variedades invariantes del punto hiperbólico. Para estas familias se estudia la separación máxima entre estas variedades en una región fijada la cual da una medida cuantitativa de la falta de integrabilidad del difeomorfismo. En el caso diferenciable se obtiene que la separación es del orden de una potencia adecuada del parámetro (que se explicita). En el caso infinitamente diferenciable es del orden de cualquier potencia del parámetro y en el caso analítico conservativo es menor que una función exponencialmente decreciente cuyos parámetros se relacionan con singularidades complejas.<br/><br/>Además se hace un estudio del comportamiento de las variedades invariantes de un punto fijo hiperbólico de difeomorfismos diferenciables cercanos a la identidad y se da un tratamiento uniforme de la forma normal de Birkmoff alrededor de un punto fijo hiperbólico para familias de difeomorfismos conservativos analíticos que contengan la identidad.

In this work we study several topics concerning quasi-periodic time-dependent perturbations of ordinary differential equations. This kind of equations appear as models in many applied problems of Celestial Mechanics, and we have used, as an illustration, the study of the behaviour near the equilateral libration points of the real Earth-Moon system. Let us introduce this problem as a motivation. As a first approximation, suppose that the Earth and Moon arc revolving in circular orbits around their centre of masses, neglect the effect of the rest of the solar system and neglect the spherical terms coming from the Earth and Moon (of course, all the effects minor than the above mentioned) as the relativistic corrections, must be neglected). With this, we can write the equations of motion of an infinitesimal particle (by infinitesimal we mean that the particle is influenced by the Earth and Moon, but it does not affect them) by means of Newton's Jaw. The study of the motion of that particle is the so-called Restricted Three Body Problem (RTBP). Usually, in order to simplify the equations, the units of length, time and mass are chosen so that the angular velocity of rotation, the sum of masses of the bodies and the gravitational constant are all equal to one. With these normalized units, the distance between the bodies is also equal to one. If these equations of motion are written in a rotating frame leaving fixed the Earth and Moon (these main bodies are usually called primaries), it is known that the system has five equilibrium points. Two of them can be found as the third vertex of equilateral triangles having the Earth and Moon as vertices, and they are usually called equilateral libration points.<br/><br/>It is also known that, when the mass parameter "mi" (the mass of the small primary in the normalized units) is less than the Routh critical value "mi"(R) = 1/2(1 - square root (23/27) = 0.03852 ... (this is true in the Earth-Moon case) these points are linearly stable. Applying the KAM theorem to this case we can obtain that there exist invariant tori around these points. Now, if we restrict the motion of the particle to the plane of motion of the primaries we have that, inside each energy level, these tori split the phase space and this allows to prove that the equilateral points are stable (except for two values, "mi" = "mi"2 and "mi"= "mi"3 with low order resonances). In the spatial case, the invariant tori do not split the phase space and, due to the possible Arnold diffusion, these points can be unstable. But Arnold diffusion is a very slow phenomenon and we can have small neighbourhoods of "practical stability", that is, the particle will stay near the equilibrium point for very long time spans.<br/><br/>Unfortunately, the real Earth-Moon system is rather complex. In this case, due to the fact that that the motions of the Earth and the Moon are non circular (even non elliptical) and the strong influence of the Sun, the libration points do not exist as equilibrium points, and we need to define "instantaneous" libration points as the ones forming an equilateral triangle with the Earth and the Moon at each instant. If we perform some numerical integrations starting at (or near) these points we can see that the solutions go away after a short period of time, showing that these regions are unstable.<br/><br/>Two conclusions can be obtained from this fact. First: if we are interested in keeping a spacecraft there, we will need to use some kind of control. Second: the RTBP is not a good model for this problem} because the behaviour displayed by it is different from the one of the real system.<br/><br/>For these reasons, an improved model has been developed in order to study this problem. This model includes the main perturbations (due to the solar effect and to the noncircular motion of the Moon), assuming that they are quasi-periodic. This is a very good approximation for time spans of some thousands of years. It is not clear if this is true for longer time spans, but this matter will not be considered in this work. This model is in good agreement with the vector field of the solar system directly computed by means of the JPL ephemeris, for the time interval for which the JPL model is available.<br/><br/>The study of this kind of models is the main purpose of this work.<br/><br/>First of all, we have focused our attention on linear differential equations with constant coefficients, affected by a small quasi-periodic perturbation. These equations appear as variational equations along a quasi-periodic solution of a general equation and they also serve as an introduction to nonlinear problems.<br/><br/>The purpose is to reduce those systems to constant coefficients ones by means of a quasi-periodic change of variables, as the classical Floquet theorem does for periodic systems. It is also interesting to nave a way to compute this constant matrix, as well as the change of variables. The most interesting case occurs when the unperturbed system is of elliptic type. Other cases, as the hyperbolic one, have already been studied. We have added a parameter ("epsilon") in the system, multiplying the perturbation, such that if "epsilon" is equal to zero we recover the unperturbed system. In this case we have found that, under suitable hypothesis of non-resonance, analyticity and non-degeneracy with respect to "epsilon", it is possible to reduce the system to constant coefficients, for a cantorian set of values of "epsilon". Moreover, the proof is constructive in an iterative way. This means that it is possible to find approximations to the reduced matrix as well as to the change of variables that performs such reduction. These results are given in Chapter 1.<br/><br/>The nonlinear case is now going to be studied. We have then considered an elliptic equilibrium point of an autonomous ordinary differential equation, and we have added a small quasi-periodic perturbation, in such a way that the equilibrium point does not longer exist. As in the linear case, we have put a parameter ("epsilon") multiplying the perturbation. There is some "practical" evidence that there exists a quasi-periodic orbit, having the same basic frequencies that the perturbation, such that, when the perturbation goes to zero, this orbit goes to the equilibrium point. Our results show that, under suitable hypothesis, this orbit exists for a cantorian set of values of "epsilon". We have also found some results related to the stability of this orbit. These results are given in Chapter 2.<br/><br/>A remarkable case occurs when the system is Hamiltonian. Here it is interesting to know what happens to the invariant tori near these points when the perturbation is added. Note that the KAM theorem can not be applied directly due to the fact that the Hamiltonian is degenerated, in the sense that it has some frequencies (the ones of the perturbation) that have fixed values and they do not depend on actions in a diffeomorphic way. In this case, we have found that some tori still exist in the perturbed system. These tori come from the ones of the unperturbed system whose frequencies are non-resonant with those of the perturbation. The perturbed tori add these perturbing frequencies to the ones they already had. This can be described saying that the unperturbed tori are "quasi-periodically dancing" under the "rhythm" of the perturbation. These results can also be found in Chapter 2 and Appendix C.<br/><br/>The final point of this work has been to perform a study of the behaviour near the instantaneous equilateral libration points of the real Earth-Moon system. The purpose of those computations has been to find a way of keeping a spacecraft near these points in an unexpensive way. As it has been mentioned above in the real system these points are not equilibrium points, and their neighbourhood displays unstability. This leads us to use some control to keep the spacecraft there. It would be useful to have an orbit that was always near these points, because the spacecraft could be placed on it. Thus, only a station keeping would be necessary. The simplest orbit of this kind that we can compute is the one that replaces the equilibrium point. In Chapter 3, this computation has been carried out first for a planar simplified model and then for a spatial model. Then, the solution found for this last model has been improved, by means of numerical methods, in order to have a real orbit of the real system (here, by real system we mean the model of solar system provided by the JPL tapes). This improvement has been performed for a given (fixed) time-span. That is sufficient for practical purposes. Finally, an approximation to the linear stability of this refined orbit has been computed, and a very mild unstability has been found, allowing for an unexpensive station keeping. These results are given in Chapter 3 and Appendix A.<br/><br/>Finally, in Appendix B the reader can find the technical details concerning the way of obtaining the models used to study the neighbourhood of the equilateral points. This has been jointly developed with Gerard Gomez, Jaume Llibre, Regina Martinez, Josep Masdemont and Carles Simó.<br/><br/>We study several topics concerning quasi-periodic time-dependent perturbations of ordinary differential equations. This kind of equations appear in many applied problems of Celestial Mechanics, and we have used, as an illustration, the study of the behaviour near the Lagrangian points of the real Earth-Moon system. For this purpose, a model has been developed. It includes the main perturbations (due to the Sun and Moon), assuming that they are quasi-periodic.<br/><br/>Firstly, we deal with linear differential equations with constant coefficients, affected by a small quasi-periodic perturbation, trying to reduce then: to constant coefficients by means of a quasi-periodic change of variables. These tori come from the ones of the unperturbed system whose frequencies are non-resonant with those of the perturbation, adding these perturbing frequencies to the ones they already had.<br/><br/>Finally, a study of the behaviour near the Lagrangian points of the real Earth-Moon system is presented. The purpose has been to find the orbit replacing the equilibrium point. This computation has been carried out first for the model mentioned above and then it has been improved numerically, in order to have a real orbit of the real system. Finally, a study of the linear stability of this refined orbit has been done.

Since ancient times, the ports have had an irreplaceable role as places of material displacement and cultural contact. First, because there were no means far air transportation, which even today day is teasible only for high value and low volume commodities, and second, because the cities area of influence servad as key element in the interaction and integration of an articulated development plan between the port and the city. Over eighty percent of international trading of imports and exports is mobilized by seaway, which explains the importance and significance of ports as interface nades between the terrestrial and marine environments, primarily for transfering people and commodities, as well as the need far adequate infrastructure and means of communication to articulate en efficient multimodal transportation, along with supporting the production and distribution chains. This research focuses on the link between the logistics chain of the Callao Peruvian port as a keyforeign trading element in the national economy, and the influence over the city for the integrated development in the social and economical aspects. Given the experienced growth by the constitutional province of Callao, and in particular its port, the problem al hand has referred to the deficiency on the interconnectivity of the city's area of influence and port of Callao. This has been further exacerbated in the last years, generating high levels of congestion by the scarcity of accessible roads to the port, as well as poor existing spatial arrangement caused by inadequate territorial planning. To address the identified problems and design the model analysis, research has been used to generate systems' dynamics to create causal diagrams that will identify the relevant factors, and structural equations to demonstrate the hypothesis through confirmatory factor analysis. The designad model on the basis of the methods has shown that there is a relationship between the supply chain and competitiveness of port services, and the connectivity between the city's area of influence and the port, likewise, the influence of the parts that shape in the port community with the necessary port and city development. This, along with providing efficient, timely and sale services, will contribute to increasing port competitiveness, strengthening foreign trade, and thus, the national economy.<br>Desde tiempos remotos, los puertos, por un lado, han tenido un rol insustituible como lugares de desplazamiento (material) y de contacto (cultural), debido, entre otras razones, a que no existia el medio de transporte aéreo, que incluso hoy en dia es viable solo para mercancías de alto valor y poco volumen; de otro lado, las ciudades y su área de influencia como elementos claves en la interacción e integración para el desarrollo articulado entre el puerto y la ciudad. Más del ochenta por ciento del comercio internacional -exportaciones e importaciones- en el mundo se moviliza por vía marítima, ello explica por sí mismo la trascendencia e importancia que tienen los puertos como nodos de interfaz entre el medio terrestre y marítimo principalmente para las transferencias de mercancías y personas, así como la necesidad de contar con infraestructuras y vías de comunicación adecuadas que permitan articular un transporte multimodal eficiente como soporte a las cadenas productivas y de distribución. La presente investigación se enfoca en la articulación entre la cadena logística del puerto del Callao como eslabón clave del comercio exterior peruano en la economía nacional y el área de influencia de la ciudad para el desarrollo económico y social integrados. En esa línea y dado el crecimiento que ha experimentado la provincia constitucional del Callao y en particular su zona portuaria, el problema a tratar se ha referido a la deficiencia en la interconectividad entre el área de influencia de la ciudad y el puerto del Callao, lo cual se ha agudizado aún más en los últimos años, generando altos niveles de congestión por la falta o escasas vias de acceso al puerto, así como el deficiente ordenamiento espacial existente producto de un inadecuado planeamiento territorial. Para abordar la problemática identificada y diseñar el modelo de análisis, la investigación ha utilizado la Dinámica de Sistemas para generar los diagramas causales, los cuales permitirán identificar los factores relevantes (constructos); y, las Ecuadones Estructurales para la demostración de la hipótesis a través del análisis factorial confirmatorio. El modelo elaborado sobre la base de los métodos indicados, ha permitido comprobar que hay una relación entre la cadena logística y la competitividad de los servicios portuarios con la conectividad entre el área de influencia de la ciudad y el puerto; asimismo, la influencia de los actores que conforman la comunidad portuaria con el necesario desarrollo del puerto y la ciudad. El lograr la deseada conectividad y a su vez brindar servicios eficientes, de calidad, oportunos y seguros coadyuvará al incremento de la competitividad portuaria fortaleciendo el comercio exterior y en consecuencia la economía nacional.

Context: Probabilistic selling is the strategy that the seller creates an additional probabilistic product using existing products. The exact information is unknown to customers until they receive the probabilistic products. This strategy is still a relatively new area for both researchers and practitioners. Many of the corresponding operations problems need to be solved to take full advantage of the opportunity of this innovative marketing strategy. However, limited attention has been paid to examining the inventory management of probabilistic selling from the perspective of Operations Management, which cannot meet the needs of decision-making in reality. Objectives: Considering different characteristics of the probabilistic product, the buyer, and the seller involved in probabilistic selling, i.e., the probabilistic product form, the buyers’ behaviours of demand switch and barter exchange, and the seller's product allocation behaviour, we establish models and solve the decision problems of pricing, inventory, joint decision of pricing-inventory, and product allocation, etc. Based on the analysis of optimal decisions and strategy comparison results, we shed some lights on the effectiveness of probabilistic selling on managing uncertainty, and its profitability. Method: First, we analyze the practice scenarios of probabilistic selling. Next we mainly use newsvendor inventory model, hotelling model, and optimization theory to model, solve, and analyze the operational problems. Then we give some analytical results. Next we conduct the numerical analysis using softwares of Matlab and Mathematica. Finally, we provide insightful managerial implications for the practice of probabilistic selling. Results: The thesis derives the optimal operational decisions of inventory order, pricing, inventory allocation, and product line design in probabilistic selling. Overall, the analysis of the results show that probabilistic selling can benefit the seller with higher expected profit by reducing demand/supply uncertainty and improving inventory efficiency. The performance of probabilistic selling is closely dependent on customers' price sensitivity, product similarity, and uncertainty level, etc. Main results considering different research scenarios are as follows: 1) When the price for the probabilistic product is independent on demand reshape, a proper cannibalization can benefit the retailer in terms of yielding a higher expected profit. Probabilistic selling is more profitable with relatively lower product similarity and higher price-sensitive customers, while inventory substitution strategy outperforms probabilistic selling with higher product similarity. 2) When the price for the probabilistic product is dependent on demand reshape, probabilistic selling can benefit the seller with higher expected profit and lower inventory. Probabilistic selling is more profitable with lower product differentiation, higher customers' price sensitivity, and higher demand uncertainty. Improper pricing would undermine the seller's profit. 3) When the seller offers physical probabilistic product, he can benefit from two effects, namely the risk pooling effect due to demand reshape and the risk diversification effect due to inventory flexibility. 4) When the seller offers barter choice in probabilistic selling, he may benefit from the marketing effect in the barter process. Offering barter choice can broaden the application range of probabilistic selling, which will increase with successful barter probability. Conclusions/Implications: First, the thesis helps sellers understand how to manage their inventory, pricing and related implementation issues to take full advantage of probabilistic selling. Second, this thesis explores the mechanism of this innovative marketing strategy as an inventory management tool to combat uncertainty which also riches the literature on Operations Management, especially inventory management.<br>Antecedentes: Los productos probabilísticos son productos adicionales creados por un proveedor que combina productos existentes y oculta parte de la información del producto. Es decir, cierta información de atributos de los productos probabilísticos es opaca para el cliente. El cliente que compra el producto probabilístico obtiene una de las combinaciones de productos con una cierta probabilidad. Las ventas probabilísticas son una estrategia de ventas que permite la venta de productos probabilísticos. Todavía es un modelo de ventas relativamente nuevo para empresas e investigadores. La implementación de ventas probabilísticas es diversa y aún no se ha verificado la rentabilidad de las diferentes formas de ventas probabilísticas. Se deben abordar las situaciones de inventario y fijación de precios que tengan en cuenta las diferentes realidades. Por el momento, desde la perspectiva de la gestión operativa, existen pocos estudios sobre la toma de decisiones de inventario y fijación de precios bajo el modelo de ventas probabilísticas, que no puede satisfacer las necesidades de las empresas para tomar decisiones científicas en el proceso de implementación. Objetivo: Este documento se centra en los tres actores principales en el proceso de venta probabilística: los productos probabilísticos, compradores y vendedores. Considere el afecto de las diferentes realidades y circunstancias (en concreto, la forma de productos probabilísticos, la demanda de transferencia y el comportamiento de intercambio del comprador, y si el vendedor reemplaza el producto en el proceso de distribución de los productos) sobre la fijación de precios y las decisiones de inventario. Al establecer un modelo que considera los factores realistas antes mencionados, se resuelve el problema de fijación de precios, la decisión conjunta de inventario- precios y la asignación de productos bajo el modelo probabilístico de ventas. Finalmente, a través del análisis de las decisiones y la comparación de estrategias, se obtendrá sugerencias de gestión para la implementación de ventas probabilísticas. Método: En primer lugar, este documento analiza los escenarios de diferentes ventas de probabilidad. En segundo lugar, utilizando el modelo de vendedor de periódicos, el modelo de Hotelling y la teoría de optimización, se intenta resolver y analizar la fijación de precios, el inventario, la toma de decisiones conjunta de inventario-precios y los problemas de decisión de asignación de productos. Luego, da el teorema y analízalo. Finalmente, proporcione asesoramiento de gestión de inventario- precios para los comerciantes que implementan ventas probabilísticas. Conclusión: Este documento ha encontrado las decisiones operativas óptimas para el inventario, fijación de precios, asignación de inventario y diseño de línea de producto en ventas probabilísticas. Los resultados generales muestran que las ventas probabilísticas pueden aumentar la eficiencia del inventario al reducir la incertidumbre de la demanda / oferta, lo que permite a los vendedores obtener mayores ganancias esperadas. El rendimiento de las ventas probabilísticas está estrechamente relacionado con factores tales como la sensibilidad del precio del cliente, la similitud y la incertidumbre del producto. Aquest treball es situa dintre del marc dels sistemes dinàmics hamiltonians de tres graus de llibertat. Allà considerem famílies d'òrbites periòdiques amb una transició estable-complex inestable: sigui L el paràmetre que descriu la família i suposarem que per a valors del paràmetre més petits que un cert valor crític, L', els multiplicadors característics de les òrbites periòdiques corresponents hi són sobre el cercle unitat, quan L=L' aquests col·lisionen per parelles conjugades (òrbita ressonant o crítica) i per L > L', abandonen el cercle unitat cap al pla complex (col·lisió de Krein amb signatura oposada). El canvi d'estabilitat subseqüent es descriu a la literatura com "transició estable a complex inestable". Tanmateix, a partir d'estudis numèrics sobre certes aplicacions simplèctiques (n'esmentarem D. Pfenniger, Astron. Astrophys. 150, 97-111, 1985), és coneguda l'aparició (sota condicions d'incommensurabilitat) de fenòmens de bifurcació quasi-periòdica, en particular, el desplegament de famílies de tors 2-dimensionals. A més aquesta bifurcació s'assembla a la (clàssica) bifurcació d'Andronov-Hopf, en el sentit de què hi sorgeixen objectes linealment estables (tors-2D el·líptics) "al voltant" d'objectes inestables de dimensionalitat més baixa (òrbites periòdiques), i recíprocament, n'apareixen tors inestables (hiperbòlics) "al voltant" d'òrbites periòdiques linealment estables.<br/> Nostre objectiu és entendre la dinàmica local en un entorn de l'òrbita periòdica ressonant per tal de provar, analíticament, l'existència dels tors invariants bifurcats segons l'esquema descrit dalt. Això el portem a terme mitjançant l'anàlisi següent: <br/> (i) Primer de tot obtenim d'una manera constructiva (això és, donant algorismes) una forma normal ressonant en un entorn de l'òrbita periòdica crítica. Aquesta forma normal la portem fins a qualsevol ordre arbitrari r. Així doncs, mostrem que el hamiltonià inicial es pot posar com la suma de la forma normal (integrable) més una resta no integrable. A partir d'aquí, podem estudiar la dinàmica de la forma normal, prescindint dels altres termes i, amb aquest tractament (formal) del problema, som capaços d'identificar els paràmetres que governen tant l'existència de la bifurcació com la seva tipologia (directa, inversa). Cal, remarcar que el que es fa fins aquí, no és només un procés qualitatiu, ja que a més ens permet derivar parametritzacions molt acurades dels tors no pertorbats.<br/> (ii) A continuació, calculem acotacions "òptimes" per a la resta. D'aquesta manera, esperem provar que un bon nombre de tors (en sentit de la mesura) es preserven quan s'afegeix la pertorbació.<br/> (iii) Finalment, apliquem mètodes KAM per establir que la majoria (veure comentari dalt) dels tors bifurcats sobreviuen. Aquests mètodes es basen en la construcció d'un esquema de convergència quadràtica capaç de contrarestar l'efecte dels petits divisors que apareixen quan s'aplica teoria de pertorbacions per trobar solucions quasi-periòdiques. En el nostre cas, a més, resulta que alguna de les condicions "típiques" que s'imposen sobre les freqüències (intrínseques i normals) dels tors no pertorbats, no estan ben definides per als tors bifurcats, de manera que ens ha calgut desenvolupar un tractament més específic. <br/><br/>keywords: Bifurcation problems, perturbations, normal forms, small divisors, KAM theory. <br/>Classificació AMS: 37J20, 37J25, 37J40<br>This work is placed into the context of the three-degree of freedom Hamiltonian systems, where we consider families of periodic orbits undergoing transitions stable-complex unstable. More precisely: Let L be the parameter of the family and assuming that, for values of L smaller than some critical value say, L', the characteristic multipliers of the periodic orbits lie on the unit circle, when L=L' they colllide pairwise (critical or resonant periodic orbit) and, for L > L' leave the unit circle towards the complex plane (Krein collision with opposite signature).<br/> From numerical studies on some concrete symplectic maps (for instance, D. Pfennniger, Astron. Astrophys. 150, 97-111, 1985) it is known the rising (under certain irrationality conditions), of quasi-periodic bifurcation phenomena, in particular, the appearance of unfolded 2D invariant tori families. Moreover, the bifurcation takes place in a way that resembles the classical Andronov-Hopf one, in the sense that either stable invariant objects (elliptic tori) unfold "around" linear unstable periodic orbits, or conversely, unstable invariant structures (hyperbolic tori) appear "surrounding" stable periodic orbits.<br/> Our objective is, thus, to understand the (local) dynamics in a neighbourhood of the critical periodic orbit well enough to prove analytically, the existence of such quasi-periodic solutions together with the bifurcation pattern described above. This is carried out through three steps:<br/> (i) First, we derive, in a constructive way (i. e., giving algorithms), a resonant normal form around the critical periodic orbit up to any arbitrary order r. Whence, we show that the initial raw Hamiltonian can be casted --through a symplectic change--, into an integrable part, the normal form itself, plus a (non-integrable) remainder. From here, one can study the dynamics of the normal form, skipping the remainder off. As a result of this (formal) approach, we are able to indentify the parameters governing both, the presence of the bifurcation and its type (direct, inverse). We remark that this is not a merely qualitative process for, in addition, accurate parametrizations of the bifurcated families of invariant tori are derived in this way.<br/> (ii) Beyond the formal approach, we compute "optimal" bounds for the remainder of the normal form, so one expects to prove the preservation of a higher (in the measure sense) number of invariant tori --than, indeed, with a less sharp estimates--.<br/> (iii) Finally, we apply KAM methods to establish the persistence of (most, in the measure sense) of the bifurcated invariant tori. These methods involve the design of a suitable quadratic convergent scheme, able to overcome the effect of the small divisors appearing in perturbation techniques when one looks for quasi-periodic solutions. És difícil dibuixar una frontera, dins la Teoria de Sistemas Dinàmics, entre lleis de conservació i simetries doncs, sovint, les seves característiques es confonen. Un clar exemple d'aquest fenómen el constitueixen els sistemes Hamiltonians i els sistemes reversibles.<br/><br/>Breument, un sistema dinàmic es diu temps-reversible (o, per nosaltres, simplement reversible) si és invariant sota l'acció d'un difeomorfisme involutiu a l'espai i una inversió en el sentit del temps. és en aquest marc on cal situar aquesta memòria. Concretament, ens centrem en dos punts molt particulars: la Teoria de Formes Normals i el fenómen del trencament de separatrius, tots dos introduïts per Poincaré a la seva tesi (1890).<br/><br/>Respecte al primer d'aquests punts, en aquesta tesi s'introdueix el concepte de Pseudo Forma Normal (breument PNF), inspirat en idees d'en Moser, i que permet transformar, sota certes hipotesis, un sistema analític en un d'equivalent d'aspecte el més simple possible. Aquesta PNF és una generalització de la coneguda Forma Normal de Birkhoff amb la qual coincideix si el sistema considerat és Hamiltonià o reversible. Com a conseqüència, s'obté, en determinats casos, l'equivalència local entre aquests dos tipus de sistemes. Aquesta PNF pot esdevenir una eina útil per estudiar la dinàmica d'un sistema analític a l'entorn d'un equilibri (un punt, una òrbita periòdica o un tor).<br/><br/>El segon punt, l'escissió de separatrius, fa referència a l'intersecció transversal de varietats invariants procedent del trencament d'una certa connexió homoclínica a l'afegir al sistema una petita pertorbació. Un dels motius d'interés sobre aquest fenòmen és que és un dels principals causants de comportament estocàstic en sistemes Hamiltonians.<br/><br/>Un problema relacionat amb aquest trencament de separatrius és el de mesurar-lo, sigui a partir del càlcul de l'angle amb el que es troben aquestes varietats per primer cop, per l'àrea que tanquen entre elles, etc. El mètode habitualment utilitzat per a estimar-lo és l'anomenat mètode de Poincaré-Melnikov. Malhauradament, si la pertorbació és ràpidament oscil-latòria els termes que proporciona aquest mètode són exponencialment petits en el paràmetre pertorbador, fet que dificulta el seu càlcul. En aquesta tesi s'ha demostrat, tal i com passa en el cas Hamiltonià, que en el cas d'un sistema reversible, respecte a una involució lineal, 2-dimensional i pertorbat de manera ràpidament periòdica i reversible, el mètode de Poincaré-Melnikov és correcte i dóna en primer ordre l'anomenada funció de Melnikov.<br>It is difficult, in the Theory of Dynamical Systems, to draw a boundary line between conservation laws and symmetries because often their effects on the dynamics are very similar. This is the case of the Hamiltonian and the Reversible systems.<br/><br/>Briefly, a dynamical system is called time-reversible (or, simply, reversible) if it is invariant under the action of an involutive spatial diffeomorphism and a reversion in time's arrow. This is the frame where this work must be placed. Precisely, we focus our attention in two particular points: the Theory of Normal Forms and the phenomenon of the splitting of separatrices, both introduced by Poincare in his thesis (1890).<br/><br/>Regarding the first one of this topics, we introduce the concept of Pseudo-normal Form (PNF in short). It comes from ideas of Moser and allows to transform, under suitable conditions, an analytic system around an equilibrium in another equivalent one having a quite simple form. This PNF is a generalization of the celebrated Birkhoff Normal Form and both coincide if the system is Hamiltonian or reversible. Consequently, the local equivalence between both types of systems is derived in some cases. This PNF can become a useful tool to study the dynamics of an analytic system in a neighborhood of an equilibrium (a fixed point, a periodic orbit or a torus).<br/><br/>The second topic, the splitting of separatrices, is related to the transversal intersection of invariant manifolds derived from the splitting of a given homoclinic connection when some small perturbation is considered. One of the reasons that makes this phenomenon interesting is that it seems to be one of the main causes of the stochastic behavior in Hamiltonian systems.<br/><br/>One problem related to this splitting of separatrices becomes to measure it, studying, for instance, some angle the form when they meet for the first time, the area of the first lobe, etc. The standard method to estimate this size is the celebrated Poincaré-Melnikov method. Unfortunately, if the perturbation oscillates rapidly the terms provided by this method are exponentially small in the perturbation parameter, and this fact makes this computation more involved. In this work we prove, like it happens in the Hamiltonian case, that in the case of a 2-dimensional analytic reversible system (reversible with respect to a linear spatial involution) perturbed by a rapidly periodic reversible perturbation, the Poincaré-Melnikov method works and it provides, at first order, the well known Melnikov Function.

L'objectiu d'aquesta tesis és el desenvolupament de mètodes analítics per a la determinació i control d'un grup d'alteradores endocrins en mostres aquoses mediambientals. <br/><br/>Els mètodes desenvolupats es basen por una banda en la utilització de la cromatografia de gasos amb l'espectrometria de masses (GC-MS) amb diferents tècniques d'extracció, com són l'extracció en fase sòlida (SPE) i una tècnica de recent aparició, l'extracció amb barres magnètiques agitadores (SBSE). Aquests mètodes utilitzen tècniques d'injecció de grans volums (LVI) recentment desenvolupats per introduir l'extracte al sistema cromatogràfic. La SPE s'ha acoblat en línia a la GC utilitzant la interfase on-column i el vaporitzador a temperatura programada, aconseguint mètodes amb un elevat grau d'automatització i millor sensibilitat. La SBSE, s'ha utilitzat amb desorció líquida, en lloc de la desorció tèrmica àmpliament utilitzada en combinació amb la GC, per estudiar l'aplicabilitat de les tècniques de LVI en cas de no disposar d'un desorbidor tèrmic. <br/><br/>Per una altra banda, amb l'objectiu d'ampliar el número de compostos estudiats, s'han desenvolupat mètodes basats en la cromatografia de líquids d'alta resolució (HPLC) utilitzant la SPE com a tècnica de preconcentració. S'ha utilitzat el detector UV-Visible, obtenint un mètode ràpid i de fàcil aplicació en els laboratoris com a mètode de control pel grup de compostos estudiats en mostres aquoses mediambientals, i la MS utilitzant la interfase d'electroesprai. <br/><br/>Amb alguns dels mètodes desenvolupats s'han portat a terme estudis de monitorització de diferents grups d'alteradors endocrins en aigües mediambientals procedents de riu i mar i en aigües d'entrada i sortida d'estacions de depuradores. Aquestes mostres han estat recollides en la zona de Tarragona, on fins l'actualitat no existien estudis de control d'aquests contaminants.<br>The scope of this thesis is to develop analytical methods to determine endocrine disruptors and to control their presence in environmental water samples. <br/><br/>Some methods are based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) using several extraction techniques such as solid-phase extraction (SPE) and the novel technique, stir-bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). These methods have been developed by using large volume injection (LVI) techniques to introduce the extract into the GC system. The SPE has been coupled to GC using the on-column interface and a programmable temperature vaporizer (PTV), to increase both automation and sensibility. SBSE with liquid desorption has been used, instead of thermal desorption (the most used in combination with GC) to study its applicability with LVI.<br/><br/>Methods based on high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) combined with SPE as a preconcentration technique, have been developed to increase the number of analytes studied. In these methods UV detector has been used to obtain a rapid method that can be easily applied as a control method in the routine laboratories. MS with electrospray interface has also been used. <br/><br/>Some of the developed methods have been used to monitor several groups of endocrine disruptors in environmental water samples from river, sea and influent and effluent sewage treatment plants. These samples have been collected in Tarragona, where no studies related to the control of these compounds have been done.

Avui en dia la conversió DC-AC té una important aplicació pràctica en el camp dels sistemes de potència ininterrompuda (SPI). Els convertidors commutats bàsics (el buck, lineal, i el boost i el buck-boost, no lineals) presenten una estructura molt simple, i al llarg dels últims quinze anys s'ha estudiat la possibilitat d'usar-los en esquemes de conversió DC-AC. <br/><br/>L'objectiu de la tesi és aconseguir que els convertidors DC-DC de potència bàsics puguin seguir referències alternes mitjançant el voltatge de sortida. També es desenvolupen esquemes robustos per tal d'eliminar l'efecte de possibles pertorbacions en la tasca de seguiment. Els modes de lliscament s'usen com a tècnica de control, i es presenten resultats de simulació.<br/><br/>La tesi s'organitza en capítols. El primer i el segon contenen una introducció i una revisió de la literatura existent. Els continguts i distribució de la resta de capítols segueix a continuació. <br/><br/>El capítol 3 tracta el seguiment exacte i asimptòtic d'una referència variable en el temps per part del voltatge de sortida d'un convertidor reductor, controlat indirectament via el corrent d'entrada. A partir de l'estudi del problema del seguiment en sistemes lineals amb guanys fixos -mitjançant la teoria de mòduls- s'obtenen restriccions sobre els possibles senyals a seguir. A més, es proporciona una estratègia de control lliscant per aconseguir el seguiment, consistent en un procediment per modificar una superfície de lliscament inicialment bona en tasques de regulació i una llei de control. Una adequada elecció de variables d'estat permet que les possibles pertorbacions de la resistència de càrrega satisfacin la condició de superposició. <br/>En el capítol 4 s'usa un procediment basat en inversió per aconseguir el seguiment exacte de referències periòdiques amb la resistència de càrrega dels convertidors no lineals boost i buck-boost. També s'obtenen condicions suficients per a possibles senyals a seguir. Es presenta també un marc general per a un tractament via inversió del problema de seguiment exacte en una certa classe de sistemes bilineals de segon ordre: aquells en els quals el problema d'inversió dóna lloc a una EDO del tipus Abel. <br/><br/>El capítol 5 estudia l'ús del mètode de Galerkin -una generalització del mètode del Balanç Harmònic- en la solució aproximada del problema invers aparegut al capítol anterior, així com l'efecte que té la seva utilització en el control del sistema. Es demostra l'existència d'una successió de solucions aproximades de l'EDO que representa l'esmentat problema invers. També es prova que aquesta successió convergeix uniformement cap a la solució periòdica de l'EDO, i s'obté una cota d'error. La sortida del sistema presenta un comportament periòdic i asimptòticament estable quan es fa anar la successió d'aproximacions de Galerkin en el control del sistema. A l'hora, la successió de sortides periòdiques presenta convergència uniforme cap a la funció desitjada sota una hipòtesi raonable. També s'obtenen en aquest cas cotes d'error. <br/><br/>En el capítol 6 s'aconsegueix seguiment asimptòtic aproximat per a convertidors no lineals bàsics que presenten pertorbacions de càrrega. Això es fa mitjançant un control adaptatiu que estima el paràmetre pertorbat i una aproximació de Galerkin de primer ordre que incorpora l'actualització on-line a una superfície de lliscament apropiada. <br/><br/>El capítol 7 proposa exercir un control directe del voltatge de sortida en convertidors boost i buck-boost bidireccionals, tot aprofitant la robustesa davant pertorbacions externes que ofereix aquest tipus de control. Es segueixen referències periòdiques mentre el voltatge de sortida es regula independentment a un nivell prefixat.<br>Nowadays, DC-to-AC conversion has an important practical application in the field of uninterruptible power systems (UPS). Basic DC-to-DC switch mode power converters (the buck, which is linear, and the boost and buck-boost, which are nonlinears) possess a very simple structure, and during the last fifteen years the possibility of using them in DC-to-AC conversion schemes has been studied. <br/><br/>The aim of this thesis is to achieve that the output voltage of the DC-to-DC buck, boost and buck-boost power converters can track periodic references. Robust schemes to eliminate disturbance effects in the tracking task are also developed. Sliding modes are used as the control technique, and the obtained results are validated by numeric simulation.<br/><br/>The thesis is organized in chapters. The first and the second one contain an introduction and a review of the existing literature. The contents and contributions of the other chapters follow below. <br/><br/>Chapter 3 deals with the exact and asymptotic tracking of a time varying reference by the load voltage of a step-down converter, indirectly controlled through the input current. Departing from the study of the tracking problem in linear systems with fixed gains with the aid of module theory, conditions over possible reference signals have been obtained. Moreover, a sliding mode strategy to achieve the control target, consisting in a procedure to modify a switching surface initially good for regulation tasks and a control law, is provided. An approppriate choice of state variables allows possible load perturbations to satisfy the matching condition. <br/><br/><br/>In chapter 4, an inversion-based indirect control is used to reach exact tracking of periodic references with the load resistance of nonminimum phase, nonlinear boost and buck-boost converters. Sufficient conditions for candidate references are also obtained. A general frame for an inversion-based treatment of the perfect tracking problem in a certain class of nonminimum phase, second order bilinear systems is proposed: those in which the inversion problem gives raise to an ODE of the Abel type. <br/><br/>Chapter 5 studies the use of the Galerkin method -a generalization of the Harmonic Balance method- in the approximate solution of the inverse problem stated in the former chapter, as well as the effect of its use on the control of the system. The existence of a sequence of approximate solutions for the ODE that represents the quoted inverse problem is proved. This sequence is also proved to converge uniformly to the periodic solution of the ODE, and an error bound has been derived. The system output exhibits a periodic and asymptotically stable behavior when the indirect control using the sequence of Galerkin approximations is performed. In turn, the sequence of periodic outputs is shown to exhibit uniform convergence to the original target function under a reasonable hypothesis. Error bounds have also been obtained. <br/><br/>In chapter 6, approximate asymptotic tracking is achieved for load perturbed, basic, nonlinear power converters. This is done by means of an adaptive control that estimates the perturbation parameter and a first order Galerkin approximation that incorporates the on-line updating into an appropriate sliding surface. <br/><br/>Chapter 7 propounds to exert a direct control of the output voltage in bidirectional boost and buck-boost converters, thus taking advantage of the insensitiveness to external disturbances offered by this type of control. Periodic references are followed, while the unstable inductor current is independently regulated at a prescribed level.

Turkey and Spain experienced drastic changes after Second World War. Turkey started the occidentalization process, with the reforms made by Atatürk but today the country still has continued struggle somewhere between full democracy and authoritarianism. On the other hand Spain stands as a solid example of democratic consolidation. Turquía inició el proceso de occidantalisation por las reformas hechas por Atatürk. Hoy en día, el país aun continua su lucha entre la plena democracia y el autoritarismo. Por otro lado, España se erige como un sólido ejemplo de la consolidación democrática. Esta tesis se enfoca en analizar los efectos de la transición y la consolidación de la democracia en la toma de decisiones en la política exterior. Se pretende investigar casos similares de ambos estados y ver los resultados en la toma de decisiones. En particular, el objetivo principal es estudiar en profundidad la política exterior de Turquía hacía el Medio Oriente después de 2002. Principalmente, la perspectiva de la investigación se basa en las relaciones de Turquía con los países del Medio Oriente tales como Irán, Irak, Siria, Israel así como Chipre. L'Espagne s'érige au contraire comme un exemple de la consolidation démocratique.Cette thèse se propose d'analyser les effets de la transition et de la consolidation de la démocratie sur les prises de décisions au sein de la politique extérieure, et ce, en travaillant sur des cas similaires au sein des deux pays, la Turquie et l'Espagne. En esta tesis abordamos tres aspectos importantes de los espacios de funciones difusas que son continuas respecto a la métrica supremo cuando están dotados de las topologías más habituales en este contexto. Estudiamos su completitud, metrizabilidad y compacidad. Este último concepto está claramente relacionado con el teorema de Ascoli cuyo resultado generalizamos a un marco más amplio. Por otra parte, estudiamos los problemas de aproximación en los espacios de funciones difusas continuas, no solo utilizando redes neuronales, sino probando resultados más generales, tipo Stone-Weierstrass. Cabe destacar que estos resultados se prueban para funciones difusas que son continuas tanto respecto a la métrica supremo como respecto a la topología de la convergencia de nivel.<br>In this thesis we deal with three important aspects of the spaces of diffuse functions that are continuous with respect to the supreme metric when they are endowed with the most common topologies in this context. We study its completeness, metrizability and compactness. This last concept is clearly related to the Ascoli theorem whose result we generalize to a wider framework. On the other hand, we studied the problems of approximation in the spaces of continuous diffuse functions, not only using neural networks, but testing more general results, such as Stone-Weierstrass. It should be noted that these results are tested for fuzzy functions that are continuous both with respect to the supreme metric and with respect to the topology of the level convergence.

El sistema de les marques s'enquadra dins del camp de l'anàlisi intervalar modal. <br/>En aquest context la tesi aporta un estudi de les operacions lineals, de la seva semàntica i sobretot de la seva operativitat quan les operacions es fan en un context no exacte com en el cas de les aritmètiques digitals. Aquest estudi de la operativitat conclou amb la necessitat d'establir un nou sistema intervalar que resolgui la problemàtica de la truncació en les operacions lineals, sistema que a la vegada resoldria el problema de la interpretació semàntica quan una mateixa variable apareix amb doble modalitat.<br/>El sistema que ens resol aquesta situació l'hem anomenat sistema de les marques i el mètode utilitzat ha sigut considerar els elements de qualsevol escala digital com intervals d'indiscernibilitat al voltant d'un punt: les marques.<br/>Sobre el conjunt de les marques es refineixen les relacions d'igualtat i desigualtat i es fa un estudi de les operacions elementals entre marques i també de la semàntica que es desprén de les operacions. <br/>El fet de poder considerar els elements de qualsevol escala digital com un interval d'indiscernibilitat ens ha permès també, que poguessim considerar qualsevol element d'una escala de mesura com una marca i que aquest nou sistema ens permetés de representar de forma fiable aquests elements.<br/>A la vegada obrim la porta a un nou tractament intervalar: el de la indiscernibilitat. Aquest nou tractament complementa la teoria intervalar modal.<br/>Finalment s'ha completat el conjunt dels intervals modals considerant que els seus extrems podíen ser marques, construint els que hem anomenat intervals de marques, dels que n'hem estudiat les relacions i la seva operativitat.<br/>Amb els intervals de marques es resol el problema que ens plantejava el context lineal i a la vegada ens obre la possibilitat d'efectuar els càlculs intervalars sense els problemes habituals que comporta la truncació.

L'Ecoparc 2 és una empresa que es dedica al tractament de diferents residus sòlids urbans (fracció orgànica, envasos i resta). Es troba en funcionament des de l'any 2004 i es troba constantment en millora, innovant i optimitzant els seus processos. Disposa d'una planta de tractament d'aigües residuals MBR, que va ser dissenyada per concentracions més baixes de les que està tractant actualment. Encara que es va ampliar, el seu rendiment ha de ser revisat i optimitzat per assegurar una operació fiable. La digestió anaeròbia contribueix a més del 75 % del total de les aigües residuals produïdes i té una elevada concentració de DQO i amoni (40.000 mgL de DQO i 4.500 mg/L de N-NH4). S'estudia la possibilitat de separació de sòlids mitjançant centrifugació y separació per membranes per disminuir la viscositat del llot. Per altra banda, també s'estudia l'hidròlisis tèrmica i el stripping per millorar la biodegradabilitat de les aigües residuals de digestió anaeròbia i disminuir la carrega de nitrogen de la planta MBR. Finalment, amb l'objectiu de reduir el consum d'aigua potable i la quantitat total d'aigües residuals produïdes, s'avalua la reutilització d'aigües residuals en el procés.<br>El Ecoparc 2 es una empresa dedicada al tratamiento de diferentes residuos sólidos urbanos (fracción orgánica, envases y resto). Está en funcionamiento desde el año 2004 y se encuentra constantemente en mejora, innovando y optimizando sus procesos. Dispone de una planta de tratamiento de aguas residuales MBR, que fue diseñada para concentraciones más bajas que las que está tratando actualmente. Aunque se amplió, su rendimiento debe ser revisado y optimizado para asegurar una operación fiable. La digestión anaerobia contribuye a más del 75 % del total de aguas residuales producidas y tiene una alta concentración de DQO y amonio (40.000 mgL de DQO y 4.500 mg/L de N-NH4). Se estudia la posibilidad de separación de sólidos mediante centrifugación y separación por membranas para disminuir la viscosidad del lodo. Por otro lado, también se estudia la hidrólisis térmica y el stripping para mejorar la biodegradabilidad de las aguas residuales de digestión anaerobia y disminuir la carga de N de la planta MBR. Por último, con el fin de reducir el consumo de agua potable y la cantidad total de aguas residuales producidas, se evalúa la reutilización de aguas residuales en el proceso.<br>Ecoparc 2 is a company dedicated to the treatment of different types of municipal solid waste (kitchen waste, packaging waste and non recyclable mixed waste). It has been in operation since 2004 and is constantly improving, innovating and optimising its processes. The site has a MBR wastewater treatment plant, which was designed for lower concentrations than those that it is currently treating. Although it was expanded, its performance needs to be revised and optimized to assure a reliable operation. Anaerobic digestion contributes more than 75% to the total wastewater produced, and it has a high COD and N-NH3 concentration (40.000 mg/l COD and 4.500 mg/l N-NH3). The possibility of solids separation by centrifugation and membranes will be studied to reduce the sludge viscosity. On the other hand, also thermal hydrolysis and stripping will be studied to improve the degradability of the anaerobic digestion wastewater and to decrease the N load to the MBR plant. Finally, in order to reduce the drinking water network consumption and the total amount of wastewater produced, the internal recycling of wastewater will be evaluated.

El subcontinent indi ofereix un gran potencial per contribuir als debats en curs sobre dispersions d’hominins i transicions tecnoculturals. Els jaciments de la vall de Malaprabha, al sud de l’Índia peninsular, proporcionen una perspectiva regional sobre els processos de transició entre el Paleolític inferior i el Paleolític mitjà. Es van triar tres conjunts, des del final de l'Aixelià fins al Paleolític mitjà, com a col·leccions clau i després es van comparar amb dos dels seus homòlegs del sud-est. Aquests conjunts, excavats o recollits en superfície, es troben en diversos Museus de l'Índia, França i el Regne Unit. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi doctoral és rastrejar els canvis tecnològics i tipològics dels Large Cutting Tools (LCT: Grans Eines Tallants, bifaços i fenedors) en la transició del Paleolític inferior al Paleolític mitjà. Un segon objectiu era discernir els efectes de les matèries primeres sobre la variabilitat de formes dels LCT. La combinació de l’anàlisi tecnotipològica clàssica i l’anàlisi Geomètrica-Morfomètrica (2D i 3D) ens permet obtenir resultats holístics precisos i reversibles. Els LCT inclouen més bifaços que fenedors. Es fabriquen constantment a partir de quarsita local en diversos tipus de suports amb un ús creixent de les ascles com a suport. Los yacimientos del Valle de Malaprabha, en el suroeste de la India, proporcionan una perspectiva regional sobre los procesos de transición entre el Paleolítico Inferior y Medio. Se eligieron tres conjuntos, del Achelense tardío hasta el Paleolítico medio local y luego se compararon con dos de sus homólogos. Estos conjuntos, excavados o procedentes de recogidas de superficie, se encuentran en varios museos de India, Francia y Reino Unido. El objetivo era trazar los cambios tecnológicos de los Large Cutting Tools en la transición del Paleolítico Inferior al Medio. Un segundo objetivo es discernir la influencia de las materias primas y los tipos de soporte en las variabilidades de forma de los LCTs. La combinación del análisis tecno-tipológico y el enfoque de la morfometría geométrica (2D y 3D) nos permite obtener resultados holísticos precisos. Los LCTs de Malaprabha incluyen más bifaces que hendedores. Se fabrican casi exclusivamente en cuarcita local en varios tipos de soportes con un uso progresivo de lascas. Su variabilidad de forma se encuentra en la periferia y no está influenciada por los soportes.<br>The Indian sub-continent, midway between Africa and South-east Asia, offers great potential to contribute to the ongoing debates of hominin dispersals and techno-cultural transitions. The Malaprabha Valley sites, in south-western Peninsular India, provides a regional perspective on the transitional processes between Lower and Middle Palaeolithic. Three assemblages, from local Late Acheulean to Middle Palaeolithic were chosen as the key collections and then compared to two of their south-eastern counterparts. These assemblages, excavated or collected from surface, are housed in various museums in India, France and UK. The aim of this PhD was to trace the technological and typological changes of the Large cutting tools (LCTs: handaxes and cleavers) at the transition from Lower to Middle Palaeolithic. A second objective was to discern raw material and blank effects on the shape variabilities of the LCTs. Combining the classical techno-typological analysis and Geometric Morphometric approach (2D and 3D) allow us to get accurate, reversible holistic results. LCTs in Malaprabha Valley always include more handaxes than cleavers. They are constantly made from local quartzite on various types of blanks with gradual increasing use of the flakes. Their shape variability is mostly located on their periphery and is not influenced by the blank types. Whatever variability occurred it seemed to result from varying relative width and thickness.

En aquesta present tesi doctoral s’han desenvolupat diferents mètodes analítics per a la determinació de la radionúclids individuals en mostres ambientals. Aquestes mostres estudiades són riques en radionúclids naturals i principalment, descendents de la cadena de decaïment del 238U, degut a que són subproductes o estan sota la influència de la indústria NORM. Aquest tipus de indústria treballa a partir de matèries primeres riques en radionúclids naturals, generant residus amb concentracions de radionúclids que poden augmentar de forma considerables les activitats de radiació naturals en el medi ambient de forma nociva per als éssers vius que l’habiten. Dintre del desenvolupament d’aquests mètodes necessaris per a realitzar un pretractament previ a la mesura de la mostra, per tal aconseguir els radionúclids individuals lliures de interferents, trobem diferents tècniques manuals i automatitzades. Aquests mètodes inclouen una combinació de tècniques de preconcentració i extracció selectives dels radionúclids d’interès que seran mesurats en diferents equips d’emissions radioactives.<br>In this present thesis I have developed different analytical methods for the determination of the individual radionuclides in environmental samples. These samples studied are rich in natural radionuclides and mainly descendants of the decay chain of 238U, because these samples are byproducts or are under the influence of the industry NORM. This type of industry works on the basis of raw materials rich in natural radionuclides, generating waste with concentrations of radionuclides that can increase considerably the natural radiation activities on the environment that can be harmful to living beings that inhabit it. Moreover in these methods developed in this thesis was included a pre-treatment prior to the measurement of the sample in order to achieve the individual radionuclides free of interference elements. We find the development of different classical and manual and automated techniques in all experimentation articles. These methods included a combination of preconcentration techniques and selective extraction resin of radionuclides of interest that will be measured in different radioactive emissions measure equipments.

L'hoquei sobre patins és un esport d'equip amb una llarga tradició històrica i reconegut èxit esportiu en el nostre territori, però amb escassa literatura científica. L'anàlisi de les variables de rendiment és cada vegada més utilitzat i acceptat pels entrenadors i esportistes. Per aquest motiu, conèixer els diferents indicadors i variables de rendiment de cada esport, i la seva influència en el resultat final, és de gran utilitat. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi doctoral és analitzar la influència de les variables contextuals i de joc en l'hoquei sobre patins. Per assolir-ho, s'han estudiat diferents variables a partir de l'anàlisi de les classificacions dels equips, de les actes dels partits i del visionat de partits. Els resultats obtinguts han permès efectuar 11 publicacions en revistes, que constitueixen el cos principal de la tesi, i s'han dividit en quatre blocs temàtics. El primer bloc (Estudis I, II, III, IV i V) tracta sobre les variables contextuals i la seva influència en el rendiment dels equips. En aquests treballs s'analitzen aspectes com el fet de jugar a casa, marcar el primer gol del partit, anar guanyant a la mitja part, així com el nivell del rival o jugar sense públic a les grades. De la mateixa manera, també es mostra el poder predictiu independent de cadascuna d'aquestes variables i quan es complementen entre elles. De forma genèrica, es demostra que les variables contextuals influeixen en el resultat dels partits, essent el nivell dels equips i el resultat a la mitja part les variables predictives més potents. El segon bloc (Estudis VI, VII i VIII) analitza les accions a pilota parada (penals i faltes directes) i la seva influència en el resultat dels partits. Els resultats obtinguts confirmen que el rendiment de les accions a pilota parada té una gran rellevància en el resultat final, i de forma més global en el rendiment dels equips a final de temporada. El tercer bloc (Estudis IX i XI) quantifica l'equilibri competitiu de les principals lligues europees d'hoquei sobre patins, mostrant que de forma genèrica hi ha més desigualtat que en altres esports. Finalment, en el quart bloc (Estudis X i XI) es comparen alguns dels aspectes analitzats en aquesta tesi com el fet de jugar a casa o l'equilibri competitiu segons el gènere de la competició, trobant algunes diferències rellevants entre les lligues masculines i femenines. En conclusió, hi ha variables contextuals i de joc que influeixen en el rendiment i en el resultat final en els partits d'hoquei sobre patins. Conèixer adequadament els factors estudiats pot ajudar als entrenadors i jugadors a adaptar millor les seves estratègies i objectius d'entrenament abans de cada competició, establint un millor coneixement i comprensió de el joc, i així poder aconseguir un millor rendiment esportiu.<br>El hockey sobre patines es un deporte de equipo con una larga tradición histórica y reconocido éxito deportivo en nuestro territorio, pero con escasa literatura científica. El análisis de las variables de rendimiento es cada vez más utilizado y aceptado por entrenadores y deportistas. Por este motivo, conocer los distintos indicadores y variables de rendimiento de cada deporte, y su influencia en el resultado final, es de gran utilidad. Esta tesis doctoral tiene como objetivo analizar la influencia de las variables contextuales y de juego en el hockey sobre patines. Para ello, se han estudiado distintas variables a partir del análisis de las clasificaciones de los equipos, de las actas de los partidos y del visionado de partidos. Los resultados obtenidos han permitido efectuar once publicaciones en revistas, que constituyen el cuerpo principal de la tesis, y se han dividido en cuatro bloques temáticos. El primer bloque (Estudios I, II, III, IV y V) trata sobre las variables contextuales y su influencia en el rendimiento de los equipos. En estos trabajos se analizan aspectos como el hecho de jugar en casa, de marcar el primer gol del encuentro, de ir ganando a la media parte, así como el nivel del rival o jugar sin público en las gradas. Asimismo, también se muestra el poder predictivo independiente de cada una de estas variables y cuando se complementan entre ellas. De forma genérica, se demuestra que las variables contextuales influyen en el resultado de los partidos, siendo el nivel de los equipos y el resultado a la media parte las variables predictivas más potentes. El segundo bloque (Estudios VI, VII y VIII) analiza las acciones a pelota parada (penaltis y faltas directas) y su influencia en el resultado de los partidos. Los resultados obtenidos confirman que el rendimiento de las acciones a pelota parada tiene una gran relevancia en el resultado final, y de forma más global en el rendimiento de los equipos a final de temporada. El tercer bloque (Estudios IX y XI) cuantifica el equilibrio competitivo de las principales ligas europeas de hockey sobre patines, mostrando que de forma genérica hay más desigualdad que en otros deportes. Finalmente, en el cuarto bloque (Estudios X y XI) se comparan algunos de los aspectos analizados en esta tesis como el hecho de jugar en casa o el equilibrio competitivo según el género de la competición, encontrando algunas diferencias relevantes entre las ligas masculinas y femeninas. En conclusión, existen variables contextuales y de juego que influyen en el rendimiento y en el resultado final en los partidos de hockey sobre patines. Conocer adecuadamente los factores estudiados puede ayudar a los entrenadores y jugadores a adaptar mejor sus estrategias y objetivos de entrenamiento antes de cada competición, estableciendo un mejor conocimiento y comprensión del juego, y así poder conseguir un mejor rendimiento deportivo.<br>Rink hockey is a team sport with a historical tradition and recognised success in our territory, but is rarely featured in scientific literature. However, because the analysis of performance variables is increasingly used and accepted by coaches and athletes, knowing the different performance indicators and variables of each sport and their influence on competitive outcomes can be quite useful. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to analyse the influence of contextual and game variables in rink hockey. Different variables have been studied in the analysis of the teams’ rankings, official scoresheets and scouting reports from recorded matches. The results obtained have been reported in 11 journal publications, which constitute the main body of the thesis, divided into four thematic sections. The first section (Articles I, II, III, IV and V) analyses the influence of contextual variables on teams’ performance. In those articles, aspects such as the game location, first goal, halftime status, the opponent’s level and playing without spectators are analysed. Likewise, the independent predictive power of each variable alone and in interaction with each other is reported. As a general trend, contextual variables influence the outcomes of matches, with the level of the teams and the halftime status as the most powerful predictive variables. The second section (Articles VI, VII and VIII) analyses the influence of individual set-pieces (i.e. penalties and free direct hits) on the outcome of matches. The results confirmed that individual set-pieces greatly influence the outcomes and, more globally, teams’ performance at the end of seasons. The third section (Articles IX and XI) quantifies the competitive balance in major European rink hockey leagues and shows that there is more inequality in rink hockey than in other sports. Last, in the fourth section (i.e. Articles X and XI), some topics analysed in the thesis, including the fact of playing at home and the competitive balance, are compared according to the gender of the league, which reveals some relevant differences between men’s and women’s leagues. In conclusion, some contextual and game variables influence teams’ performance and the outcome of matches in rink hockey. Knowing the factors studied can help coaches and players to better adapt their strategies and training objectives before each competition, to have a better understanding of the game and, as a result, to improve their performance.

El diagnóstico rápido de la mayoría de las enfermedades tiene una importancia vital para proporcionar el remedio adecuado y, por lo tanto, el control de problemas de salud. La detección rápida y selectiva de biomoléculas grandes, específicamente proteínas, es uno de los objetivos importantes en este campo. Las técnicas basadas en inmunoensayos son las más comúnmente utilizadas, aunque requieren un marcaje específico. Por lo general, estos métodos también requieren personal altamente capacitado y equipos complejos que se traduce en una metodología relativamente cara y lenta. En la presente tesis aportamos por primera vez un nuevo tipo de aptasensores potenciométricos de estado sólido basados en nanotubos de carbono que pueden detectar analitos grandes, como por ejemplo proteínas, de manera rápida (casi instantánea), selectiva, y sensible sin necesidad de marcaje químico. Los sensores desarrollados responden correctamente a la proteína analito (α-trombina humana) dentro de los niveles fisiológicos en el suero humano.<br>Rapid diagnosis of most illnesses has a vital importance for providing the appropriate cure and hence controlling public health concerns. Fast and accurate detection of large biomolecules, specifically proteins, is one of the major steps regarding the subject. Over recent years, several detection methodologies have been developed. However, almost all of the developed methods either required very complex techniques to be applied, or a long time to obtain the results. The most commonly used techniques were specific label requiring immunoassays. They generally require highly trained staff and complex equipment which results in an expensive and relatively slow methodology. With the present thesis we report a new type of label-free potentiometric solid state carbon nanotube based aptasensors that can detect large analytes, as case example proteins, in a rapid (almost instantaneous), selective and sensitive way, for the first time. The developed sensors successfully responded to analyte protein (human α-thrombin) within physiological human serum levels.

Nowadays, thanks to the increase of computers capability to solve huge and complex problems, and also thanks to the endless effort of the geotechnical community to define better and more sophisticated constitutive models, the challenge to predict and simulate soil behavior has been eased. However, due to the increase in that sophistication, the number of parameters that define the problem has also increased. Moreover, frequently, some of those parameters do not have a real geotechnical meaning as they just come from mathematical expressions, which makes them difficult to identify. As a consequence, more effort has to be placed on parameters identification in order to fully define the problem. This thesis aims to provide a methodology to facilitate the identification of parameters of soil constitutive models by backanalysis. The best parameters are defines as those that minimize an objective function based on the differences between measurements and computed values. Different optimization techniques have been used in this study, from the most traditional ones, such as the gradient based methods, to the newest ones, such as adaptive genetic algorithms and hybrid methods. From this study, several recommendations have been put forward in order to take the most advantage of each type of optimization technique. Along with that, an extensive analysis has been carried out to determine the influence on soil parameters identification of what to measure, where to measure and when to measure in the context of tunneling. The Finite Element code Plaxis has been used as a tool for the direct analysis. A FORTRAN code has been developed to automate the entire backanalysis procedure. The Hardening Soil Model (HSM) has been adopted to simulate the soil behavior. Several soil parameters of the HSM implemented in Plaxis, such as E_50^ref, E_ur^ref, c and f, have been identified for different geotechnical scenarios. First, a synthetic tunnel case study has been used to analyze all the different approaches that have been proposed in this thesis. Then, two complex real cases of a tunnel construction (Barcelona Metro Line 9) and a large excavation (Girona High-Speed Railway Station) have been presented to illustrate the potential of the methodology. Special focus on the influence of construction procedures and instruments error structure has been placed for the tunnel backanalysis, whereas in the station backanalysis, more effort has been devoted to the potential of the concept of adaptive design by backanalysis. Moreover, another real case, involving a less conventional geotechnical problem, such as Mars surface exploratory rovers, has been also presented to test the backanalysis methodology and the reliability of the Wong & Reece wheel-terrain model; widely adopted by the terramechanics community, but nonetheless, still not fully accepted when analyzing lightweight rovers as the ones that have been used in recent Mars exploratory missions.<br>Actualmente, gracias al aumento de la capacidad de los ordenadores para resolver problemas grandes y complejos, y gracias también al gran esfuerzo de la comunidad geotécnica de definir mejores y más sofisticados modelos constitutivos, se ha abordado el reto de predecir y simular el comportamiento del terreno. Sin embargo, debido al aumento de esa sofisticación, también ha aumentado el número de parámetros que definen el problema. Además, frecuentemente, muchos de esos parámetros no tienen un sentido geotécnico real dado que vienen directamente de expresiones puramente matemáticas, lo cual dificulta su identificación. Como consecuencia, es necesario un mayor esfuerzo en la identificación de los parámetros para poder definir apropiadamente el problema. Esta tesis pretende proporcionar una metodología que facilite la identificación mediante el análisis inverso de los parámetros de modelos constitutivos del terreno. Los mejores parámetros se definen como aquellos que minimizan una función objetivo basada en la diferencia entre medidas y valores calculados. Diferentes técnicas de optimización han sido utilizadas en este estudio, desde las más tradicionales, como los métodos basados en el gradiente, hasta las más modernas, como los algoritmos genéticos adaptativos y los métodos híbridos. De este estudio, se han extraído varias recomendaciones para sacar el mayor provecho de cada una de las técnicas de optimización. Además, se ha llevado a cabo un análisis extensivo para determinar la influencia sobre qué medir, dónde medir y cuándo medir en el contexto de la excavación de un túnel. El código de Elementos Finitos Plaxis ha sido utilizado como herramienta de cálculo del problema directo. El desarrollo de un código FORTRAN ha sido necesario para automatizar todo el procedimiento de Análisis Inverso. El modelo constitutivo de Hardening Soil ha sido adoptado para simular el comportamiento del terreno. Varios parámetros del modelo constitutivo de Hardening implementado en Plaxis, como E_50^ref, E_ur^ref, c y f, han sido identificados para diferentes escenarios geotécnicos. Primero, se ha utilizado un caso sintético de un túnel donde se han analizado todas las distintas técnicas que han sido propuestas en esta tesis. Después, dos casos reales complejos de una construcción de un túnel (Línea 9 del Metro de Barcelona) y una gran excavación (Estación de Girona del Tren de Alta Velocidad) se han presentado para ilustrar el potencial de la metodología. Un enfoque especial en la influencia del procedimiento constructivo y la estructura del error de las medidas se le ha dado al análisis inverso del túnel, mientras que en el análisis inverso de la estación el esfuerzo se ha centrado más en el concepto del diseño adaptativo mediante el análisis inverso. Además, otro caso real, algo menos convencional en términos geotécnicos, como es la exploración de la superficie de Marte mediante robots, ha sido presentado para examinar la metodología y la fiabilidad del modelo de interacción suelo-rueda de Wong y Reece; extensamente adoptado por la comunidad que trabajo en Terramecánica, pero aún no totalmente aceptada para robots ligeros como los que se han utilizado recientemente en las misiones de exploración de Marte.

The finite element method is a valuable tool for simulating complex physical phenomena. However, any finite element based simulation has an intrinsic amount of error with respect to the exact solution of the selected physical model. Being aware of this error is of notorious importance if sensitive engineering decisions are taken on the basis of the numerical results. Assessing the error in elliptic problems (as structural statics) is a well known problem. However, assessing the error in structural transient dynamics is still ongoing research. The present thesis aims at contributing on error assessment techniques for structural transient dynamics. First, a new approach is introduced to compute bounds of the error measured in some quantity of interest. The proposed methodology yields error bounds with better quality than the already available approaches. Second, an efficient methodology to compute approximations of the error in the quantity of interest is introduced. The proposed technique uses modal analysis to compute the solution of the adjoint problem associated with the selected quantity of interest. The resulting error estimate is very well suited for time-dependent problems, because the cost of computing the estimate at each time step is very low. Third, a space-time adaptive strategy is proposed. The local error indicators driving the adaptive process are computed using the previously mentioned modal-based error estimate. The resulting adapted approximations are more accurate than the ones obtained with an straightforward uniform mesh refinement. That is, the adapted computations lead to lower errors in the quantity of interest than the non-adapted ones for the same number of space-time elements. Fourth, a new type of quantities of interest are introduced for error assessment in time-dependent problems. These quantities (referred as timeline-dependent quantities of interest) are scalar time-dependent outputs of the transient solution and are better suited to time-dependent problems than the standard scalar ones. The error in timeline-dependent quantities is eficiently assessed using the modal-based description of the adjoint solution. The thesis contributions are enclosed in five papers which are attached to the thesis document.<br>El mètode dels elements finits és una eina valuosa per a simular fenòmens físics complexos. Tot i això, aquest mètode només proporciona aproximacions de la solució exacta del model físic considerat. Per tant, quantificar l'error comés en l'aproximació és important si la simulació numèrica s'utilitza per a prendre decisions que poden tenir importants conseqüències. Actualment, les eines que permeten avaluar aquest error són ben conegudes per a problemes estacionaris, però encara presenten importants limitacions per a problemes transitoris com la dinàmica d'estructures. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és contribuir a millorar les tècniques existents per estimar l'error en dinàmica d'estructures i proposar-ne de noves. La primera contribució és una nova metodologia per a calcular cotes de l'error en una quantitat d'interès del problema. Les cotes proposades són més precises i proporcionen una millor estima de l'error que les cotes calculades amb tècniques prèvies. La segona contribució és una una nova tècnica que proporciona aproximacions de l'error en una quantitat d'interès utilitzant càlculs eficients. La novetat principal d'aquesta proposta és aproximar la solució del problema adjunt associat a la quantitat d'interès utilitzant l'anàlisi modal. El resultat és un estimador de l'error indicat particularment per a problemes transitoris, ja que el cost de calcular l'estimador a cada pas de temps és molt baix. La tercera contribució és una tècnica que permet construir de manera adaptada tant la discretizació temporal com espacial amb l'objectiu de millorar l'eficiència de la simulació. Aquesta tècnica es basa en la informació proporcionada per l'estima de l'error amb anàlisi modal. Les aproximacions calculades utilitzant les discretitzacions adaptades són més precises que les obtingudes amb un simple refinament uniforme de la malla de càlcul. És a dir, les discretitzacions adaptades proporcionen un error en la quantitat d'interès menor que les discretizacions no adaptades per al mateix nombre d'elements espai-temps. Finalment, la quarta contribució és un nou tipus de quantitats d'interès especialment indicades per a estimar l'error en problemes transitoris. Aquest nou tipus de quantitats són funcions escalars dependents del temps que proporcionen una informació més completa sobre l'error en problemes transitoris que les quantitats d'interès estàndard. L'error en aquestes noves quantitats és estimat eficientment utilitzant la descripció modal de la solució del problema adjunt. Les contribucions d'aquest treball es troben recopilades en cinc articles que s'inclouen adjunts en el document de la tesi.

This thesis examines the response of stainless steel members when subjected to transverse and normal forces triggering the instability phenomena called web crippling and local buckling, respectively. Currently, the part of Eurocode dealing with stainless steel, EN 1993-1-4 (2006) misses design provisions for web crippling and the applicability of some of its aspects is yet to be fully verified especially for application to ferritic stainless steel. The first part of the thesis laid in the development of design equations for the treatment of web crippling in stainless steel sections which are currently designed following specifications given in EN 1993-1-3 (2006) for cold-formed carbon steel. Two design approaches were derived covering austenitic and ferritic stainless steels: an empiric equation, in line with the current provisions for web crippling design given in EN 1993-1-3 (2006); and an alternative semi-empiric design method based on strength curves which enables a better understanding of the phenomenon and showed to significantly improve web crippling predictions. For the second part of the thesis, the applicability of the local buckling design provisions given in EN 1993-1-4 (2006) to ferritic stainless steel was examined giving focus to the slenderness limits and the effective width equations. The results showed that EN 1993-1-4 (2006) can safely be applied to ferritic stainless steel, though the code is rather conservative in comparison with other methods. Finally, a modification of the effective width equation incorporating element interaction effects was proposed which allows an improvement of cross-section capacity predictions and enables to amend the effective width method to the same level of alternative design approaches but promoting the use of the concepts currently considered in Eurocode.<br>Esta tesis estudia la respuesta estructural de elementos de acero inoxidable sometidos a fuerzas transversales i normales que desencadenan los fenómenos de inestabilidad llamados web crippling y local buckling, respectivamente. Actualmente, la parte de Eurocódigo que contempla los aceros inoxidables, el EN 1993-1-4 (2006) carece de ecuaciones de diseño para web crippling y la aplicabilidad de algunas de sus especificaciones necesita ser validada especialmente para los aceros inoxidables ferríticos. La primera parte de esta tesis se focaliza en el desarrollo de ecuaciones de diseño para el tratamiento del web crippling en secciones de acero inoxidable que actualmente se diseñan siguiendo las especificaciones dadas en EN 1993-1-3 (2006) para acero al carbono conformado en frío. Dos métodos de diseño para los aceros inoxidables austeníticos y ferríticos: una ecuación empírica en línea con la actual dada en EN 1993-1-3 (2006); y un método de diseño semi-empírico basado en curvas de resistencia que permite entender mejor el fenómeno y muestra una mejora importante de las predicciones a web crippling. Para la segunda parte de la tesis, se ha estudiado la aplicabilidad de las actuales especificaciones para el diseño a local buckling dadas en EN 1993-1-4 (2006) a los aceros inoxidables ferríticos focalizándose en los límites de esbeltez y las ecuaciones de ancho eficaz. Los resultados mostraron que EN 1993-1-4 (2006) puede ser aplicado a los aceros inoxidables ferríticos, aunque el código es bastante conservador en comparación con otros métodos de diseño. Finalmente, se propuso una modificación de la ecuación del ancho eficaz que incorpora la interacción entre los elementos de la misma sección y que permite, además de mejorar las predicciones de la resistencia seccional, llevar el método del ancho eficaz hasta el mismo nivel que otros métodos de diseño pero ensalzando el uso de los conceptos actualmente considerados en Eurocódigo
