Abstract (sommario):
In this paper we propose a non-homogeneous observer-based-output feedback scheme for the double integrator system. The control scheme is composed by two non-homogeneous structures. It resembles a non-homogeneous state feedback controller, where the unmeasurable state is replaced by the that provided by a non-homogeneous observer. Compared to other reported schemes, the closed-loop system is not homogeneous of negative degree, so it is not possible to use the results established for homogeneous systems. To overcome this problem, the finite-time stability analysis is carried out by means of (local) strict Lyapunov functions.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper addresses the problem of global output feedback stabilization for a class of inherently higher-order uncertain nonlinear systems subject to time-delay. By using the homogeneous domination approach, we construct a homogeneous output feedback controller with an adjustable scaling gain. With the aid of a homogeneous Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, the scaling gain is adjusted to dominate the time-delay nonlinearities bounded by homogeneous growth conditions and render the closed-loop system globally asymptotically stable. In addition, we also show that the proposed approach is applicable for time-delay systems under nontriangular growth conditions.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, the problem of global practical output tracking is investigated by state feedback for a class of uncertain nonlinear time-delay systems. Under mild conditions on the system nonlinearities involving time delay, we construct a homogeneous state feedback controller with an adjustable scaling gain. By a homogeneous Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional, the scaling gain is adjusted to dominate the time-delay nonlinearities bounded by homogeneous growth conditions and render the tracking error can be made arbitrarily small while all the states of the closed-loop system remain to be bounded.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper addresses the problem of global practical output control using output feedback for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems with time-varying delay. First, a homogeneous output feedback controller is designed for a nominally uncertain system by adding power integrator technology. Then, with the help of an appropriate Lyapunov-Krasovsky functional and a reduced-order observer, using the homogeneous dominance approach and adding a power integrator method, an output feedback controller is successfully designed to ensure that all states of the closed-loop system remain constrained while simultaneously making the tracking error arbitrarily small.

Abstract (sommario):
Model examples of linear wave systems are considered to illustrate the origin of feedback instability in situations involving strong transients. Two mechanisms of transient growth are addressed. The first is a spatial amplification of resonant waves propagating in the same direction. The second form of transient growth is purely temporal. It is found that under certain conditions, both forms of transients can trigger global instability in a non-homogeneous system.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective. Development of a method for organizing the process of forming flows register structure, patented by the author at the Department of DSTU, which is a cellular automaton of binary sequences with a controlled structure of "cellular" automata in homogeneous register environments. Method. To solve the set system problem, a process model was built in order to determine the factors that allow changing the sequence of flow elements. Result. When studying the most common generators of pseudo-random streams based on linear register media with modulo two adders in feedback circuits, which are "cellular" automata, it was established from the tables of environment states that the factors determining the structure of the generated streams of binary sequences are the sequence of states , are the initial state of the register of a homogeneous medium and the feedback structure determined by the transition function of the cellular automaton. Conclusion. It is shown that by varying the initial state of the cellular automaton and the structure of feedbacks as control tools, it seems possible to form binary pseudo-random streams of states with different structures, different order of flow elements, bringing their characteristics closer to random ones. Examples of the implementation of the flow structure control process are given, confirming this assumption. A typical structure of a stream shaper with a managed structure based on a homogeneous one is given.

Abstract (sommario):
Context: Excessive ground reaction force when landing from a jump may result in lower extremity injuries. It is important to better understand how feedback can influence ground reaction force (GRF) and potentially reduce injury risk. Objective: To determine the effect of expert-provided (EP), self-analysis (SA), and combination EP and SA (combo) feedback on reducing peak vertical GRF during a jump-landing task. Data Sources: We searched the Web of Science database on July 1, 2011; using the search terms ground reaction force, landing biomechanics, and feedback elicited 731 initial hits. Study Selection: Of the 731 initial hits, our final analysis included 7 studies that incorporated 32 separate data comparisons. Data Extraction: Standardized effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated between pretest and posttest scores for each feedback condition. Data Synthesis: We found a homogeneous beneficial effect for combo feedback, indicating a reduction in GRF with no CIs crossing zero. We also found a homogeneous beneficial effect for EP feedback, but the CIs from 4 of the 10 data comparisons crossed zero. The SA feedback showed strong, definitive effects when the intervention included a videotape SA, with no CIs crossing zero. Conclusions: Of the 7 studies reviewed, combo feedback seemed to produce the greatest decrease in peak vertical GRF during a jump-landing task.

Abstract (sommario):
Self-organized spatial vegetation patterning is widespread and has been described using models of scale-dependent feedback between plants and water on homogeneous substrates. As rainfall decreases, these models yield a characteristic sequence of patterns with increasingly sparse vegetation, followed by sudden collapse to desert. Thus, the final, spot-like pattern may provide early warning for such catastrophic shifts. In many arid ecosystems, however, termite nests impart substrate heterogeneity by altering soil properties, thereby enhancing plant growth. We show that termite-induced heterogeneity interacts with scale-dependent feedbacks to produce vegetation patterns at different spatial grains. Although the coarse-grained patterning resembles that created by scale-dependent feedback alone, it does not indicate imminent desertification. Rather, mound-field landscapes are more robust to aridity, suggesting that termites may help stabilize ecosystems under global change.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractWe present coupled radiation hydrodynamical simulations of the epoch of reionization, aimed at probing self-feedback on galactic scales. Unlike previous works, which assume a (quasi) homogeneous UV background, we self-consistently evolve both the radiation field and the gas to model the impact of previously unresolved processes such as spectral hardening and self-shielding. We find that the characteristic halo mass with a gas fraction half the cosmic mean, Mc(z), a quantity frequently used in semi-analytical models of galaxy formation, is significantly larger than previously assumed. While this results in an increased suppression of star formation in the early Universe, our results are consistent with the extrapolated stellar abundance matching models from Moster et al. 2013.

Abstract (sommario):
Based on stochastic time-delay system stability criterion and a homogeneous domination approach, the output-feedback stabilization problem for a class of more general stochastic upper-triangular systems with state and input time-delays has been solved in this paper. Firstly, the initial system is changed into an equivalent one with a designed scalar by introducing a set of coordinate transformations. After that, by designing an implementable homogeneous reduced-order observer, and tactfully selecting a suitable Lyapunov–Krasoviskii functional and a low gain scale, a delay-independent output-feedback controller is explicitly constructed. Finally, the globally asymptotically stability in probability of the closed-loop system is ensured by rigorous proof. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed design scheme.

Abstract (sommario):
Generalization provides a window into the representational changes that occur during motor learning. Neural network models have been integral in revealing how the neural representation constrains the extent of generalization. Specifically, two key features are thought to define the pattern of generalization. First, generalization is constrained by the properties of the underlying neural units; with directionally tuned units, the extent of generalization is limited by the width of the tuning functions. Second, error signals are used to update a sensorimotor map to align the desired and actual output, with a gradient-descent learning rule ensuring that the error produces changes in those units responsible for the error. In prior studies, task-specific effects in generalization have been attributed to differences in neural tuning functions. Here we ask whether differences in generalization functions may arise from task-specific error signals. We systematically varied visual error information in a visuomotor adaptation task and found that this manipulation led to qualitative differences in generalization. A neural network model suggests that these differences are the result of error feedback processing operating on a homogeneous and invariant set of tuning functions. Consistent with novel predictions derived from the model, increasing the number of training directions led to specific distortions of the generalization function. Taken together, the behavioral and modeling results offer a parsimonious account of generalization that is based on the utilization of feedback information to update a sensorimotor map with stable tuning functions.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article, we study the local boundary stabilization of the non-homogeneous Navier–Stokes equations in a 2d channel around Poiseuille flow which is a stationary solution for the system under consideration. The feedback control operator we construct has finite dimensional range. The homogeneous Navier–Stokes equations are of parabolic nature and the stabilization result for such system is well studied in the literature. In the present article we prove a stabilization result for non-homogeneous Navier–Stokes equations which involves coupled parabolic and hyperbolic dynamics by using only one boundary control for the parabolic part.

Abstract (sommario):
In this paper, the position tracking control problem of pneumatic servo systems is investigated. These systems usually have high nonlinearities and unmeasurable piston velocities. Firstly, by using adding a power integrator technique, a global finite-time state feedback controller is proposed. Secondly, based on homogeneous theory, a nonlinear observer is developed to estimate the piston velocity. Finally, the corresponding output feedback controller is derived, which local finite-time stabilizes the position tracking error system. Compared with the conventional backstepping output feedback control scheme, the developed nonsmooth output feedback control scheme offers a faster convergence rate and a better disturbance rejection property. Numerical simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper further discusses the state feedback stabilization for stochastic high-order feedforward nonlinear systems with input time delay. By constructing the appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, and using the variable transformation technique and the homogeneous domination idea, a state feedback controller is designed to ensure that the closed-loop system will be globally asymptotically stable in probability. Finally, an example is given to verify the effectiveness of the obtained analytical results.

Abstract (sommario):
Feedback is a critical component of teamwork regulation. Research underscores the importance of feedback processes for its effectiveness in teams and further notes how individual differences can affect these processes. Nonetheless, few have theorized on the cultural dimensions associated with feedback to specify how these can attenuate such processes. We contend that research can be advanced by specifying how cultural dimensions may shape individual perception and processing of feedback and team processing of feedback in homogeneous and heterogeneous teams with respect to cultural dimensions. To address this foundational question, we review and integrate the literature on feedback in teams and culture in teams by (a) incorporating the role of culture in team feedback models, (b) discussing how cultural dimensions could influence the perception and processing of feedback, and (c) highlighting important directions for future inquiries at the intersection of feedback and cultural theories. We discuss the links between cultural dimensions derived from the field of intercultural communication and feedback behaviors and processes and provide propositions concerning culturally informed differences in specific feedback responses at individual and team levels.

Abstract (sommario):
The problem explored in this article concerns the stability of the state feedback control of the upper-triangular stochastic nonlinear systems whose control coefficients are time-varying. First, the state feedback control of the corresponding nominal system is carried out by utilizing the backstepping technique combined with the appropriate Lyapunov function. Then, low-gain homogeneous domination technology and the efficient coordinate transformation method are adopted to realize the state feedback control of the original system and ensure the global asymptotic stability (GAS) in probability of the system. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the feasibility and correctness of the method.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper addresses the problem of the partial eigenvalue assignment for second-order damped vibration systems by static output feedback. The presented method uses the combined acceleration, velocity and displacement output feedback and works directly on second-order system models without the knowledge of the unassigned eigenpairs. It allows the input and output matrices to be prescribed beforehand in a simple form. The real-valued spectral decomposition of the symmetric quadratic pencil is adopted to derive a homogeneous matrix equation of output feedback gain matrices that assure the no spillover eigenvalue assignment. The method is validated by some illustrative numerical examples.

Abstract (sommario):
We report a construction of distributed-feedback (DFB) optical microcavities, which is realized through mechanical contact between a high-quality planar thin film of a polymeric semiconductor and a large-area homogeneous nanograting. Using poly[(9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-(benzo[2,1,3] thiadiazol-4,8-diyl)] (F8BT) as the active medium for the planar layer, we achieve strong amplified spontaneous emission from such a microcavity with a low threshold. This not only simplifies largely the fabrication techniques for DFB microcavities, but also avoids the unexpected chemical interactions during solution processing between the organic semiconductors and the nanograting materials. Furthermore, high-quality polymer thin films with high surface smoothness and high thickness homogeneity are employed without any modulations for constructing the microcavities. This also suggests new designs of microcavity light-emitting diodes, or even for realizing electrically pumped polymer lasers, simply by metallizing the dielectric nanogratings as the electrodes.
