In Los Angeles, the influence of Hollywood and the film industry, combined with a non-stop barrage of media images, has blurred the line between the real and imaged. The literature reveals a city exploding with cultural, racial and social differences, making Los Angeles a confusing and alienating place. The literature of Los Angeles reflects the changing face of the city. Los Angeles was always a city with a promising future, economic booms and optimism seemed to suggest that here was a place where the American Dream really could come true. Thousands travelled west in search of sunshine, oranges and a life that formerly, they could only dream of having. Yet, the literature of Los Angeles has highlighted the city's actual history together with a realization of undercurrents of violence, prejudice, depression and shattered dreams. The past, present and future is used to reveal a city that is in stark opposition to the Los Angeles, waves of immigrants came to find. This thesis explores the idea of the dreamer coming west to Los Angeles within the literature and the variety of ways in the travellers' romantic notions of Los Angeles as a city of promise, is betrayed, leaving a desperate people in its wake. The literature shows that beneath the shiny surface of a city founded on sunshine and prosperity, corruption reached all levels of society and the 'mean streets' abound. Later, influenced by an overwhelming feeling of powerlessness caused by Post-war nuclear depression, McCarthyism, loss of identity, and living in a city fragmented by racial tension and an ever growing gap between the very rich and the very poor, the literature of Los Angeles reflects not only the fears of that city, but of American society as a whole. The collision of technology, rapid progression and population explosion turned Los Angeles into a disconnected city, where the real and imagined merge in a cityscape that demonstrates a conflicting combination of historical replication, original design and movie-set inspiration. Nothing is ever what it appears to be in Los Angeles.

This dissertation challenges how Hollywood is typically imagined as monolithic, homogenous and homogenising, and separated from other cinemas by fixed and impermeable borders. This influential cinematic paradigm posits a centre-periphery model underpinned by binary oppositions in which most cinemas are negatively defined as Hollywood’s ‘other’ and perceived as fixed in permanent states of opposition and assimilation. It is a perception reinforced by the influential critical paradigm which focuses on the films’ formal stylistic and narrative properties. This conceptualisation ignores, or fails to observe, the larger picture, in which global, national and local cinemas relate to each other in complex and volatile ways.
My argument is that a paradigm shift is required in which the main question asked is not ‘What is Hollywood?’ but ‘Where is Hollywood?’ Location is a crux of my argument because it offers a way of questioning the widespread conception of Hollywood as bounded and fixed in a stable cultural landscape. I apply Arjun Appadurai’s framework of disjunctive global cultural flows to the analysis of cinema to show the existence of a more dynamic and chaotic screenscape than is popularly imagined. I also develop a new model of textual analysis involving traces and tracings. This troubles the notion of impermeable borders by finding the traces of global cultural flows within the film frame and tracing their trajectories outside the frame to and from their points of origin and destination. From the creative tensions caused by these asymmetrical and, multidirectional flows a previously unobserved screenscape emerges in which it is possible to see globalising processes as hybridising processes. Within this interpretive framework Hollywood is decentred and can no longer be perceived as fixed and bounded, or as the paradigm by which most cinemas define themselves and are judged. It reveals that heterogeneity and flux rather than homogeneity and fixity characterise intercinematic relations. It shows the existence of porous borders permitting transnational flows. In linking a film’s formal stylistic properties to the disjunctions in the global flows, the new model I develop for textual analysis offers a way of re-imagining Hollywood within the transnational imaginary.

Elles imposent une relecture des rapports bipolaires qui focalisent l'attention des médias et du pouvoir politique de l'époque. La présente thèse vise à étudier l'évolution de la communauté coréenne de Los Angeles et à examiner les facteurs qui ont contribué à l'émergence des hostilités entre les entrepreneurs coréens et les Noirs américains. Après avoir retracé les débuts de l'immigration coréenne sur les îles Hawaii, l'analyse se déploie à exploiter la dimension économique de la présence coréenne pour démontrer sa forte contribution dans la montée des conflits avec les résidents noirs. Elle se termine par l'interrogation sur l'impact des émeutes sur l'avenir de la communauté coréenne<br>The urban riots of 1992 bring to the fore the growing complexity of racial relations in America. En 1941, la federation des ouvriers de l'industrie cinematographique tenta d'etablir un syndicalisme democratique qui defia les producteurs et le reste des organisations syndicales. Par sa structure, la federation se trouva depourvue de tout soutien. Ainsi, scenaristes et acteurs virent en la federation un element destabilisateur au sein de l'industrie. Les autres syndicats l'attaquerent, voyant en elle, une dangereuse rivale. In 1941, the conference of studio unions (csu), was set up as a democratic organization to challenge the hollywood establishment producers and labor organizations. By the nature of its structure, the csu isolated itself from its natural affiliates. The most important of these groups, led by these groups, led by the writers and the actors, saw the csu as a destabilizing element for the industry, and other associated labor units perceived the csu as a direct threat to their own positions within the industry. In the post world war ii period one of the most effective means of neutralizing such a threat was to denounce the csu as a communistcontrolled organization. Despite repeated denials of any such connections. The csu and its leaderships suffered increating isolation and violent repression. Cette thèse explore l'histoire du littoral de Los Angeles, et plus spécifiquement des plages qui font la renommée de la région, des années 1920 au début des années 1970. Il s'agit d'étudier les plages non pas seulement sous l'angle de l'histoire du tourisme et des loisirs, mais dans une perspective d'histoire urbaine. En effet, l'aménagement, l'accessibilité, la surveillance, la réglementation et la ségrégation raciale de ces vastes espaces publics font l'objet de multiples débats au cours du siècle. À la croisée de l'histoire environnementale et de l'histoire socio-culturelle, ce travail prend en compte les différents acteurs - ingénieurs, scientifiques, urbanistes, élus et propriétaires locaux - qui ont cherché à transformer et réguler le littoral suivant des visions concurrentes, voire contradictoires, ainsi que les hommes et les femmes qui ont fait valoir leur droit d'occuper et de s'approprier ce lieu. Trois conclusions principales se dégagent de cette étude. D'abord, les plages de Los Angeles sont aujourd'hui largement artificielles ; elles ont notamment été élargies de manière spectaculaire entre les années 1930 et 1960. Ensuite, elles sont le théâtre de multiples remises en cause des hiérarchies sociales et raciales qui prévalent en ville. Toutefois, dans l'après-guerre, un mouvement de modernisation des plages et des quartiers environnants engendre l'élimination partielle des publics et des pratiques jugés indésirables par les autorités. Enfin, les plages sont le lieu de naissance de plusieurs sous-cultures, qui contribuent à façonner un modèle balnéaire original et influencent les manières de montrer et mettre en valeur son corps, à la plage comme à la ville<br>This dissertation explores the history of the Los Angeles shoreline and, more specifically, the city's famous beaches, from the 1920s through the early 1970s. I examine Los Angeles beaches not only as tourist attractions, but as urban spaces. Indeed, as vast public accommodations which attracted millions of people every year, the beaches generated heated debates regarding their development, accessibility, policing, and racial segregation. Contributing to environmental, cultural and social history, this dissertation takes into account the multiple historical actors - engineers, scientists, urban planners, local officials and homeowners - who attempted to transform and regulate the beaches according to competing visions, as well as the ordinary men and women who claimed their right to occupy and appropriate this space. My conclusions are divided into three main categories. First, I demonstrate that the beaches of Los Angeles are today mostly artificial; between the 1930s and the 1960s, the beaches were vastly enlarged thanks to the development of new techniques. Second, I show that the beaches were a place where the traditional social and racial hierarchies could momentarily be challenged. However, the postwar modernization of the beaches and the surrounding neighborhoods led to the eviction of the so-called undesirable public from the shores. Third, the beaches were the birthplace of multiple subcultures which contributed to the emergence and diffusion of new values and bodily norms, whether at the beach or in the city

Depuis quelques années de nouveaux vocables sont inventés par les urbanistes pour décrire au mieux la ville en mutation. L'un deux est l'adjectif "post-moderne" qui fait référence à une nouvelle ère dans laquelle serait entrée la ville. Pour de nombreux urbanistes et géographes urbains, la ville qui caractérise le mieux la post-modernité est Los Angeles et serait à l'instar de Chicago dans les années 20, un nouveau laboratoire, un nouveau prototype de la ville américaine. Alors que l'on parle souvent d'américanisation et parfois même de los angélisation des villes américaines ou européennes pour mettre en avant leur étalement urbain ainsi que l'émergence de nouveaux centres, on observe au contraire à Los Angeles, le retour d'un urbanisme à l'"Européenne". Cette nouvelle tendance est représentée par le mouvement du New urbanism qui participe actuellement à la construction de Playa Vista. Ce nouveau quartier situé à l'ouest de la ville répond à des critères bien particuliers dont : la mixité fonctionnelle de l'espace qui intègre le piéton et une densité du bâti supérieure au reste de la ville. One of them is the adjective "postmodern" which refers to a new era which the city is supposed to have entered. For many planners and urban geographers, the city which best illustrates postmodernity is Los Angeles. Just like Chicago in the twenties, it is said to be a laboratory and a new prototype of American city. Whilst the "Americanisation" and "los angelisation" of American and European cities is often mentioned, Los Angels shows evidence of a return to European types of planning. This trend is reflected in the New Urbanism movement, which is currently involved in the Playa Vista development. This new area, located to the West of the city, is based on a specific set of criteria, including mixed-use, the integration of pedestrians and a higher density than that of the rest of the city. The aim of this thesis is to ask the following questions : how and why does this new area blend into Los Angeles’cityscape when it in fact appears to be a variance with it

Une nouvelle conceptualisation du terme « star system » propose une solution à ce conflit : une qui différencie entre un « star system classique » et un « néo-star system ». Autre aspect central relié à ce phénomène : la relation entre la mode et la beauté d'un côté, et le fonctionnement du star system de l'autre. Apparue dans les années 1970, l’expression disaster movie désigne d’abord un cycle de fictions hollywoodiennes, comme L’Aventure du Poséidon, 747 en Péril ou La Tour Infernale, qui racontent les aventures de personnages confrontés à un désastre ou sa menace : crash aérien, incendie, naufrage, tremblement de terre. Dans les années 1990, un second cycle de films-catastrophe se constitue, dont le succès culmine avec le Titanic de James Cameron. Inspirée par les travaux de Rick Altman, notre étude cherche à cerner l’identité synchronique du genre, puis à faire son histoire. Les films-catastrophe prolongent, en les reconfigurant, plusieurs traditions hollywoodiennes : le spectacle de la destruction, le mode mélodramatique et l’exhibition du corps performant. Dans ces fictions de la communauté en crise, le récit thérapeutique de la catastrophe donne lieu à une surenchère spectaculaire où s’exprime la logique de puissance d’un nouveau «cinéma des attractions»<br>First coined in the 1970s, the term disaster movie was primarily used to refer to a cycle of Hollywood fictions such as The Poseidon Adventure, Airport 1975 or The Towering Inferno, that recount the adventures of characters who are faced with a catastrophe, or the threat of one : plane accident, fire, shipwreck, or earthquake. A new cycle of disaster movies then developed in the 1990s, culminating with the unprecedented success of James Cameron’s Titanic. Inspired by Rick Altman’s work, our study sets out to detail the synchronic identity of the genre, before charting its history. Disaster movies prove to be a continuation, and at the same time a reorganization, of several Hollywood traditions : spectacles of destruction, melodramatic mode and exhibitions of the performing body. These are fictions about communities in crisis, in which the therapeutic disaster narrative is conducive to an escalation of spectacle, thus allowing a new « cinema of attractions » to demonstrate its power

La notion d'enclave est un des modèles dominants de la compréhension des modes d'installation des immigrés en ville aux États-Unis. Définie par une surface continue nettement délimitée, l'enclave serait la condition spatiale de la reproduction identitaire et de la constitution d'une conscience collective. Or, la multiplicité des espaces d'installation et de représentation des individus s'auto-déclarant arméniens dans l'agglomération de Los Angeles témoigne d'une nébuleuse, irréductible à un modèle centré. Le constat de cette multiplicité n'est pas suffisant ; s'y ajoutent des revendications de structures spatiales communautaires, matérialisées notamment par la création en 2000 du quartier de Little Armenia. Je propose de comprendre ce paradoxe entre une nébuleuse d'espaces et la revendication d'une centralité unique, à partir du modèle du kaléidoscope. Instrument d'optique, il est composé d'une diversité de petits objets, qui, mis en mouvement, composent des images à l'infini, non pas indistinctes, mais structurées géométriquement. Ainsi, les espaces multiples de représentations des Arméniens à Los Angeles sont structurés par des relations de pouvoir et notamment par des normes communautaires. Ces structures ne sont pas fixes, elles sont en mouvement tendues vers des horizons utopiques. A partir du modèle du kaléidoscope, je réexamine la notion de territoire, définie comme tentative de délimitation symbolique de l'espace par des lignes d'horizon<br>The enclave theory is generally used to describe urban immigrant settlements in American cities. Understood generally as a bounded and fixed place, the enclave is supposed to be the necessary condition for the production of identity and community belonging. However the multiple and heterogeneous places of Armenian immigrants settlement in the Greater Los Angeles area show that the enclave model is not relevant. In addition to these multiple settlements, Armenian immigrants claim a right to build a distinctive and centered place. This claim succeeded in 2000 with the creation of an official area called Little Armenia in the city of Los Angeles. To understand the coexistence of polycentric Armenian settlements and the community claim to build a unique center, I propose to use the model of a kaleidoscope. As an optical instrument, the kaleidoscope is made of multiple bits of glass which create -when moving- changing images which are geometrically structured. Similarly we can consider that the multiple Armenian places in Los Angeles are spatial fragments structured by community claims. These claims are never completely fixed or satisfied since they can be understood as utopian. Thus I propose to redefine the term of enclave as a symbolic and utopian framework built by an immigrant community to structure and control the multiplicity of its settlement places

Costume designer Orry-Kelly has a unique place in Hollywood history as one of the few designers to win three or more Academy Awards and one of the few Australians to succeed in
the Hollywood studio system. His work was a major factor in the success of Bette Davis at Warner Bros. However, Orry-Kelly and his work have received little critical attention.
This study examines the function of Orry-Kelly's costumes in a selection of Bette Davis vehicles produced at Warner Bros. between 1938 and 1942. In order to assess the value of Orry-Kelly's contributions, the thesis charts the development of the role of the Hollywood studio costume
designer and summarises theories relevant to the function of costume in classical Hollywood narrative.
Films analysed are Jezebel, Dark Victory, The Letter, The Little Foxes, Now, Voyager, The Great Lie and In This Our Life. Sources consulted for background to Orry-Kelly's life and career include records in the Orry-Kelly File in the Warner Bros. Archives at the University of Southern
California, and material gathered in Australia which has not been previously presented in an academic study.
The study concludes that Orry-Kelly's costume concepts display an intuitive understanding of processes of human perception and behaviour, and knowledge of the requirements of the film medium, to convey the preferred meanings about characters and aid in story-telling.

Il s'est alors agi de déterminer si, durant deux décennies charnières, les années 30 et les années 90, Hollywood a développé une vision homogène de l'idéal national. Ainsi, malgré l'existence de nombreux débats concernant la forme de l'Etat fédéral ou la définition de la citoyeneté, la démocratie de l'homme du peuple paraît avoir été érigée en un absolu politique et social par le cinéma des années trente. De la même manière, alors qu'ils sont souvent décrits comme ne possédant aucune cohérence thématique ou stylistique, les films hollywoodiens de la dernière décennie du vingtième siècle se sont révélés porteurs d'une image unifiée de la société idéale, essentiellement définie par les caractéristiques idéales typiques d'un modèle technocratique<br>Cinema here is considered as a social event and as a cultural product liable to convey ideological stances. Moreover, as regards the United States, an intimate connection between film and nation emerges from the very story of the country. Thus, in spite of the existence of numerous debates concerning the form of the federal state or the definition of citizenship, the democracy of the common man seems to have been raised to the status of a political and social absolute by the cinema of the 30's. As an African American woman born in Watts, Los Angeles in 1946, Coleman is the author of a significant literary oeuvre. Whether regarding the urban evolution and construction of the city, its ethnic composition, its socioeconomic conditions or its cultural development, the megalopolis can be read explicitly and implicitly throughout the author’s work, which started in 1979 and ended with the posthumous co-publication of The Love Project in 2014.Post World War II Los Angeles and the great mutations that the territory has been undergoing are, for Coleman, an unending source of material that are both motivating her writing and influencing her craft. The privileged witness of a city under the firm grasp of postmodern ideology of which Los Angeles seems to be the epicenter, Coleman’s work shows the ever-growing gap between an everyday life that is getting more and more brutal and an idealized imagery of the city that imposes itself as the American Way of Life par excellence. That unreachable goal for a disadvantaged and disenfranchised portion of society (about to become the majority of the Los Angeles population), is projected in a perpetual renewal of the American Dream, maintained within reaching distance, as an obscene strategy serving social appeasement. Wanda Coleman thus intends to unsettle an illusion that has been perpetrated and widely distributed through and by Hollywood whose influences, in a mass-media transmission era, cannot be under-estimated. Ces projets immobiliers sont présentés, par les promoteurs immobiliers ainsi que les autorités locales comme plus « durables » que l’urbanisme traditionnel de la région. Ces affirmations sont contestées par de nombreux opposants, pour qui l’immobilier actuel est semblable aux pratiques habituelles de la région, notamment par sa surconsommation d’eau et d’autres atteintes à l’environnement. Ces controverses interviennent alors que les ressources en eau de la région semblent plus menacées que jamais par une conjonction de facteurs politiques, environnementaux et économiques. Nous analysons les positions des promoteurs, autorités, fournisseurs d’eau et leurs opposants afin de nous demander si l’urbanisme qui s’impose actuellement dans la métropole va plus dans le sens de la continuité que des ruptures, ainsi que les conséquences environnementales, politiques et sociales des évolutions en cours. Nous construisons ainsi une critique des notions de «durabilité » et de « protection de l’environnement », en montrant comment elles sont construites socialement et politiquement dans un contexte géographique donné<br>This dissertation analyzes the current debate in Southern California on water supply and land use planning in major development projects. Developers and local authorities claim that these developments are more “sustainable” than the traditional urbanism of the region. Numerous opponents, who argue that current practices are still characterized by excessive water use and other environmental damages, contest these claims. These controversies take place against the backdrop of perceived growing political, environmental and economic threats to the region’s water supply. We discuss the changes and elements of continuity in the current evolutions, and analyze their environmental, political and social consequences. We thus build a critique of “sustainability” and “environmental protection”, by showing how these notions are socially and politically shaped in given geographical contexts

Cette thèse consiste en une sociologie des films américains des réalisateurs de cinéma d’origine européenne expatriés aux États-Unis entre 1900 et 1945. Le corpus, exhaustif, a été établi à partir d’une population d’étude circonscrite à 77 réalisateurs, et comprend 2657 films. Ce travail renseigne un aspect particulier du transfert culturel transatlantique : la socialisation professionnelle à Hollywood par le biais du système de catégorisation de la production cinématographique en « genres ». Le genre est envisagé comme produit d’une construction sociale, dans une perspective pragmatique. C’est donc en sociologie des arts que nous inscrivons nos travaux et à l’histoire du cinéma et que nous empruntons ses objets d’étude. Deux approches sont combinées. La première est microsociologique, en cela que les films du corpus donnent lieu à une analyse qualitative, cherchant à les inscrire dans un contexte de! production et à retracer leur processus interprétatif. La seconde est macrosociologique, car les films sont ensuite analysés de façon quantitative, notamment au moyen d’outils statistiques. L’ambition n’est pas d’offrir une comparaison de la socialisation par le genre entre les réalisateurs d’origine européenne et « les autres », mais bien d’opérer une comparaison interne, soit de mesurer les similitudes et divergences entre les nombreux réalisateurs de la population d’étude, aux parcours et carrières variées. Cette thèse fait ainsi apparaître le caractère déterminant de certains éléments dans la dynamique de socialisation à Hollywood. Il en est ainsi du statut professionnel lors de l’expatriation américaine, que nous démontrons être un facteur prévalent<br>This thesis consists of a sociology of American films by European émigré directors expatriated to the United States between 1900 and 1945. The corpus, exhaustive, has been elaborated from a group delimited to 77 directors, and includes 2657 films. This work informs a particular aspect of the transatlantic cultural transfer : professional socialization in Hollywood through the categorization system of movie industry into « genres ». Genre is viewed as a product of social construction, in a pragmatic way. Thus, our research falls within sociology of arts and borrows its subject from the film history. Two approaches are mixed. The first is microsociological, meaning films of the corpus are analyzed using a qualitative method, seeking to investigate their production context and reception process. The second is macrosociological, for films are next analyzed using a quantitative method, particularly by having recourse to statistic tools. Our a! mbition is not to offer a comparison of socialization through genre between the European émigré and « the others », but definitely to conduct an inner one, by measuring similarities and differences between the group’s numerous directors, these having varied careers and trajectories. This thesis brings into light the effective impact of a certain number of things on socialization dynamic in Hollywood. We demonstrate therefore that professional status at the time of American expatriation is a prevalent factor

This dissertation uses quantitative data on city cinematography and the morphological study of filming locations to identify how differences in ways of seeing cities, as shaped by cinematographic choices, are anchored both in differences in what is physically present as well as in differences in frameworks and expectations about what might be interesting or important to see.
Four films are evaluated that are set in Los Angeles and New York, two cities recognized as paradigms in American urbanism: The Naked City (1948), The Long Goodbye (1970), Goodfellas (1990), and Pulp Fiction (1994). In general, the New York movies suggest the embeddedness of the individual in the city and its social life in ways tied closely to urban form, with the visual presentation of the street acting as an index to the position of the individual within the narrative. Los Angeles, by contrast, presents the city as a series of enclaves linked by infrastructure. The street as a sociologically relevant entity hardly exists, with the exception of a handful of chase scenes, as though only crisis can catalyze direct encounters with the streets of Los Angeles.
Within individual movies, the depiction of city form reveals directorial idioms in the presentation of the narrative. The Naked City exploits corner shots to impart greater visual interest to the presentation of activity in the streets. The Long Goodbye shows the degradation of the distinction between public and private space as concurrent with a city form and culture that resists decoding. Goodfellas develops a grammar of views on the street that corresponds to the relationships of individual characters to overlapping social groups over time. Pulp Fiction mainly presents city locations as decontextualized to focus on dialogue and relationships, to sculpt urban form to meet the exigencies of the narrative, and to all the more powerfully introduce surprise.
In the concluding chapter, the qualities of the city as presented in Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction and both of the cities are diagrammed and discussed relative to architectural precedents and ideas that might inform architectural design.

L'etude de l'ellipse constitue une etape de cette entreprise. L'ellipse, figure determinante du langage comme du recit litteraire, figure-cle dans la rhetorique narrative du film, l'est encore plus dans une cinematographie hollywoodienne qui manifeste un talent naturel pour une vision elliptique du monde. Cette vision sera abordee, dans une premiere partie d'analyses, a travers quatre variations sur l'ellipse temporelle classique: le systeme narratif du melodrame, le montage frequentatif ou sommaire, l'ouverture et l'ellipse de metamorphose. The study of ellipsis represents a forward step in this enterprise. Ellipsis, a key element both of language and of literary narration, is also a keystone to the rhetorical narrative of any film, and even more so within hollywood film-making, which displays a natural ability to shape an elliptical world vision. This vision will be treated, first, through analyses of four variations on the classic temporal ellipsis : the narrative structure of melodrama, the + montage sequence ; or summary, the overture, and, finally, the ellipsis as it shelters a wide range of physical and psychological character metamorphoses. The second group of analyses considers the larger subject of the elliptical work as it affects the representation of space and of the actor, as well as the style of film-makers known for their sense of abbreviation. The ellipsis governs not only the efficiency of the narration but also its moral weight. Thus studying the elliptical influence represented by the production code means reflecting upon that which was at play in the crucial dramatic articulations of the sexual moment and the mortal moment, the capture of which, either in images or non-images, expresses in many ways an option that is not only ideological but also philosophical
