Abstract (sommario):
DANGEMANNING Farm is a cereal, pulse and sheep property in the central wheatbelt of Western Australia with a 325 mm annual rainfall which falls mainly in winter. The farm was first settled in the early 1900s and has evolved, both in design and farm practice, in response to the effects of past practices on production and land degradation. It is now a farm in its early stages of a modern holistic development, with an emphasis on the integration of agricultural systems, Landcare and nature conservation. The long-term goal for the farm is to achieve sustainable farming in a non-degraded landscape.

Kouanchao, Ketmani. "Lao American college students' holistic identity development". Thesis, California State University, Fullerton, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3570185.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Lao American college students' holistic identity development was examined in this study. The research utilized modified grounded theory methods to generate a model of holistic identity development for Lao American students whose families immigrated to the United States after 1978 as a part of the third wave of Laotian immigrants. Chickering and Reisser's (1993) psychosocial identity development theory and Kodama, McEwen, Liang, and Lee's (2002) negotiating identity and development task model for Asian Americans were utilized as an a priori theoretical foundation. Interviews explored participant perceptions and lived experiences as related to the elements of these two theories. Grounded theory development techniques were utilized in the analysis to explore the nature and interactions of various elements of the a priori theories. Data were collected using one exploratory focus group followed by in-depth interviews. Each participant was a child of parents who were refugees; all but one was born in the U.S. Findings center around three themes related to Lao American college students' holistic identity development: (a) the enmeshment of purpose and identity, (b) the influence and integration of family and culture influences, and (c) the fluidity of community influence. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of implications for theory, policy, and practice.

Freudenberg, Joachim. "Towards a holistic lean product development framework". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7920/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Companies consider product development (PD) their competitive lever to survive in a technology-fuelled and fast-paced environment. Lean Product Development (LPD) is a promising concept currently being adopted by companies focusing on maximising customer value, shortening lead times, and reducing costs in PD. This research initially concentrates on developing a comprehensive LPD framework which subsumes existing concepts and supersedes them by including findings from the wider PD research area. The investigation then leads into understanding the highly-interwoven, yet underinvestigated, character of LPD to pave the way for its implementation into the complex knowledge-based PD environment. The deduced systematic implementation plan, which both provides an appropriate level of detail and accounts for the inherent complexities of LPD, supports companies in their struggle to embrace Lean practices in PD. The LPD framework is developed by employing a content analysis of existing concepts and integrating insights from the wider PD environment. The relationships between the framework’s elements are investigated using the results of a self-administered questionnaire embedded in a cross-sectional research design and complemented by the fruitful discussions found in literature. The insights into the inner workings of the framework are subsequently appropriated to formulate general recommendations and an effective implementation plan.

Yodha, Aditya. "Sustainable development in Indonesia : holistic assessments and pathways". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/118620.

This thesis assesses the status of sustainable development in Indonesia, identifies the systemic barriers, and offers holistic development pathways toward sustainability. The framework employed in this research looks at the interactions between the economy, employment, and environment while taking into account the forces of technology and globalization. It concludes that the development in Indonesia is not yet on a sustainable path. The economy is performing well and unemployment is low, but inequality is very high, capacity to adapt is low, and the environment is quickly degrading. The major barrier towards sustainability are fundamentally politics: messy decentralization, pervasive corruption, and persistent elite capture. Other systemic barriers are the low level of education, fragmented innovation system, and low awareness of sustainability issues. To make progress towards sustainability, the systemic barriers must be cleared. Local governments need to be made clean and competent; lifelong learning systems established; local innovations boosted; pollutions prevented at the source using technological or organizational innovations; and awareness of sustainability issues raised. The findings in this thesis are summarized and mapped to the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the concluding chapter.

Abstract (sommario):
Entrepreneurship and startups are widely studied themes that have been the focus of plenty of literature in the last years. In this sense, different methodologies have been proposed in order to ensure a successful market entry for startups, being the lean startup concept considered as the most useful and promising. Almost all of the studies on market entry for startups have been developed focusing on the business-to-consumer market, especially on the information and communication technologies. An almost complete lack of studies covering product development and market entry was found in the conventional industrial business-to-business market. In order to solve such a problematic, this master thesis has found its motivation. The present thesis introduces a literature review on methodologies used for product development and market entry for startups, i.e. using the concepts of lean startup, market analysis, minimum viable product, prototyping and business modelling. Afterwards, a methodology is proposed to increase market entry success’ possibilities for startups venturing in the conventional industrial business-to-business market. Finally, the methodology is used in a case study involving a young German start-up. By using the methodology proposed, an optimal product configuration with its corresponding draft design and business model was obtained. The methodology achieved to solve critical sub-systems’ bottle necks through iterative design, while at the same time delivering a business model that will be considered by the startup for its initial market entry strategy. Finally, it can be concluded that the methodology proposed is a success, as by using it the process of product and business development had results that correctly fit into the reality of the business. An invitation is left open to finish the design process of the non-critical sub-systems, as well as to keep developing in the customer-feedback iterations for both the product and business development.

Salter, Edward Robert Edmund. "Holistic environmental assessment of oil and gas field development". Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/1228.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study has developed a new life-of-field, goal orientated process of analysis called Holistic Environmental Assessment (HEA). HEA assesses the total environmental risk associated with a proposed oil and gas field development. It prioritises environmental risks and identifies cost effective strategies to reduce them. For the first time the process was applied to a real 'case study' field development programme to test its effectiveness. The application identified that it is a useful tool to help design eco-efficient and costeffective oil and gas field developments. Furthermore, it was discovered that much of the information required by HEA could be obtained in a quick and user-friendly format. The new assessment process was developed after a review of the interaction of the offshore oil and gas industry with the environment, and techniques employed to evaluate this interaction. The review identified that the industry interacts with the environment in a number of different ways, and that the level of interaction transgresses the boundaries of sea, air and land locally, regionally and internationally. Legislation and public concern demand no damage to the environment from offshore oil and gas field exploration and development. UK environmental legislation and people's expectations for environmental performance are in a state of change. This change, coupled with the uncertainty over how resilient the environment is to perturbation, and the increasing risk of environmental liability presents a need for operators to clearly manage environmental information and assess total environmental risk. It was discovered that Environmental Assessment, Lifecycle Analysis and Cost Benefit Analysis, when used separately, failed to assess total environmental risk, but when used in combination under the HEA process could. Many organisations, such as the British Medical Association, European Oilfield Speciality Chemicals Association, the Royal Ministry of Petroleum and Energy (Norway) and Shell Expro, now recognise that a holistic approach is essential to assess total environmental risk. The author proposes that HEA would be effective as a software tool to analyse different environmental risk mitigation systems. This would facilitate the identification of a system that steers an operator towards the triple bottom line of Sustainable Development.

Veneracion, April Ann 1974. "Holistic development : supporting businesses in the Dudley Street neighborhood". Thesis, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1721.1/70730.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (M.C.P.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Urban Studies and Planning, 2000.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 54-55).
Current models of inner city economic development overlook the social function of businesses. These models when applied to the neighborhood level are limited by the fact businesses do not serve a solely economic function. If economic development practitioners are concerned about alleviating poverty in inner cities, then practitioners should include an assessment of the social functions of business as well as the economic functions. As the literature and empirical findings show, businesses help to build social capital in the community through their relationships with customers and other organizations both inside and outside the neighborhood. Social capital generation of small businesses is a necessary but not sufficient condition for poverty alleviation. Social capital needs to be channeled towards a collective goal of community change or poverty alleviation. Community building organizations like the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative have created a resident led process and mechanism for building social capital towards the goal of enhanced quality of life in the neighborhood. Business development practitioners interested in poverty alleviation strategies can draw upon these community-building institutions to do what I refer to as "holistic development" in the neighborhood. This is a case study of how a neighborhood planning organization view businesses in the context of the community building activities. This thesis attempts to understand the possibilities of small businesses as community-building institutions.

Abstract In 2020 the Australian Institute of Management conducted a Leadership Survey and the "most important finding was that poor leadership is a major contributing factor to employee attrition." "75.55 % of respondents stated that they had left an organisation in their last three roles because of the leadership team, their direct manager, or a combination of both. Nearly half (42.32%) had left more than one of their previous roles." We can clearly see that "poor leadership will simply not be tolerated by employees, and this is a rising trend."

Abstract (sommario):
This case study was developed to inform subsequent research and analysis of local government leadership and prioritisation of sanitation and hygiene (S&H) in East Africa. Consolidated learning from across the three countries involved can be found in the Sanitation Learning Hub (SLH) Learning Brief: Strengthening sub-national systems for area-wide sanitation and hygiene. From late 2020 to early 2021, the SLH collaborated with local government actors and development partners from three subnational areas to explore ways of increasing local government leadership and prioritisation of S&H to drive progress towards area-wide S&H. For some time, local government leadership has been recognised as key to ensuring sustainability and scale and it is an important component of the emerging use of systems strengthening approaches in the sanitation sector. It is hoped that this work will provide practical experiences to contribute to this thinking. Three case studies were developed to capture local government and development partners’ experiences supporting sub-national governments increase their leadership and prioritisation of S&H in Siaya County (Kenya), Nyamagabe District (Rwanda), and Moyo District (Uganda), all of which have seen progress in recent years. The development partners involved were UNICEF in Kenya, WaterAid in Rwanda, and WSSCC/ Uganda Sanitation Fund in Uganda. The cases were then analysed through three online workshops facilitated with staff from the local governments, central government ministries and development partners involved to explore them in further detail, review experiences and identify levers and blockages to change. Lessons from the workshops are documented in the SLH learning brief mentioned above. This is the case study developed by Moyo District and WSSCC/Uganda Sanitation Fund documenting their experiences and reflections from working together to increase prioritisation of S&H in Moyo District, Uganda.

Morgan, Jonathan, e Jamie McCall. COVID-19 and North Carolina’s Economic Development Organizations: Perspectives on Response, Recovery, and Shifting Priorities. UNC Chapel Hill School of Government, luglio 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46712/edo.covid.recovery.

Abstract (sommario):
The consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic will reverberate across North Carolina’s local economy for many years. We surveyed the state’s local economic development organizations (EDOs) in the fall of 2021 about how they responded to (1) the pandemic’s immediate crisis period as well as (2) their strategies for long-term recovery. The results show the uneven and bifurcated nature of the recovery process. While some communities have enjoyed a robust “return to normal,” for many the pandemic remains a serious and enduring threat to economic prosperity. We recommend that policymakers leverage proven EDO approaches, including collaborations with local nonprofits and service providers, as part of a more holistic and equitable pandemic recovery strategy.

Abstract (sommario):
Existing research on students’ socio-emotional learning and social support for learning in the Global South is limited and most scales that have been developed to measure these aspects of students’ learning and development originate in the Global North. We outline our emerging strategy for capturing student socio-emotional learning and social support for learning in the context of Ethiopia, which may have relevance for other researchers seeking to explore this area of study in Ethiopia or in other related contexts. We propose that considering aspects of students’ socio-emotional learning and social support for learning—in addition to foundational skills of numeracy and literacy—can help to move towards a more expansive and holistic understanding of learning.

Williams, Teshanee, Jamie McCall, Natalie Prochaska e Tamra Thetford. How Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) are shaped by Funders through Data Collection, Impact Measurement, and Evaluation. Carolina Small Business Development Fund, novembre 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.46712/cdfi.evaluation.pressures.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) are grassroots organizations that provide equitable access to financial capital. While a robust body of evidence supports the ability of CDFIs to promote holistic and sustainable development, attempts to systematically evaluate the industry have yielded disparate and often confounding results. We apply an institutional theory lens to examine challenges to meaningful data collection, impact measurement, and program evaluation. Our data show how regulators, major funders, and third-party rating organizations have applied indirect and direct pressures that have systematically lowered the capacity of nonprofit CDFI loan funds. This combination of coercive, mimetic, and normative isomorphic forces has (1) hampered meaningful data collection, (2) created a lack of staff expertise in these areas, (3) raised the cost and complexity of utilizing technology systems to improve evaluation processes, and (4) fostered industry norms which de-prioritize meaningful evaluation. The data suggest several ways for stakeholders to improve these trends. For example, funders might consider providing support which builds organizational capacity via unrestricted operating grants and recurring financial commitments.

Abstract (sommario):
This report employs an intersectional feminist framework to identify and analyze key trends related to gender and technology. It aims to provide a holistic picture of how gender and technology are embedded in and influenced by a myriad of intersecting issues and challenges that complicate how ICT for development (ICT4D) initiatives concretely impact women’s lives. Based on synthesized research, the report provides recommendations for relevant stakeholders on how to approach the field of international development using technology as a tool for social good in ways that benefit the most marginalized members of our global community.
