In this article, we investigate the geometry of 4 4 -dimensional compact gradient Ricci solitons. We prove that, under an upper bound condition on the range of the potential function, a 4 4 -dimensional compact gradient Ricci soliton must satisfy the classical Hitchin-Thorpe inequality. In addition, some volume estimates are also obtained.

Stimulated by improved oscillation estimates of the potential function and the scalar curvature on compact gradient Ricci solitons introduced in a recent study by Cheng, Ribeiro, and Zhou [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. Ser. B 10, 33–45 (2023)], we give several new sufficient conditions for compact four-dimensional normalized shrinking Ricci solitons to satisfy the Hitchin–Thorpe inequality. Our new conditions refine the validity of the Hitchin–Thorpe inequality obtained by Tadano [J. Math. Phys. 58, 023503 (2017)], Tadano [J. Math. Phys. 59, 043507 (2018)], and Tadano [Differ. Geom. Appl. 66, 231–241 (2019)].

Studying moduli spaces of semistable Higgs bundles (E, \phi) of rank n on a smooth curve C, a key role is played by the spectral curve X (Hitchin), because an important result by Beauville-Narasimhan-Ramanan allows us to study isomorphism classes of such Higgs bundles in terms of isomorphism classes of rank-1 torsion-free sheaves on X. This way, the generic fibre of the Hitchin map, which associates to any semistable Higgs bundle the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of \phi, is isomorphic to the Jacobian of X. Focusing on rank-2 Higgs data, this construction was extended by Barik to the case in which the curve C is reducible, one-nodal, having two smooth components. Such curve is called of compact type because its Picard group is compact. In this work, we describe and clarify the main points of the construction by Barik and we give examples, especially concerning generic fibres of the Hitchin map. Referring to Hausel-Pauly, we consider the case of SL(2,C)-Higgs bundles on a smooth base curve, which are such that the generic fibre of the Hitchin map is a subvariety of the Jacobian of X, the Prym variety. We recall the description of special loci, called endoscopic loci, such that the associated Prym variety is not connected. Then, letting G be an affine reductive group having underlying Lie algebra so(4,C), we consider G-Higgs bundles on a smooth base curve. Starting from the construction by Bradlow-Schaposnik, we discuss the associated endoscopic loci. By adapting these studies to a one-nodal base curve of compact type, we describe the fibre of the SL(2,C)-Hitchin map and of the G-Hitchin map, together with endoscopic loci. In the Appendix, we give an interpretation of generic spectral curves in terms of families of double covers.

AbstractThe need for massively parallel algorithms, suitable to exploit the computational power of hardware such as graphics processing units, is ever increasing. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for the on-the-fly verification of Linear-Time Temporal Logic (LTL) formulae [45] that is aimed at running on such devices. We prove its correctness and termination guarantee, and experimentally compare a GPU implementation with state-of-the-art LTL model checkers. Our new GPU LTL-checking algorithm is up to 150$$\times $$ × faster on proving the correctness of a system than LTSmin running on a 32-core high-end CPU, and is more economic in using the available memory.

This chapter presents a Hitchin connection constructed in a setting which significantly generalizes the setting covered by the first author, which, in turn, was a generalization of the moduli space covered in the original work on the Hitchin connection. In fact, this construction provides a Hitchin connection which is a partial connection on the space of all compatible complex structures on an arbitrary but fixed prequantizable symplectic manifold which satisfies a certain Fano-type condition. The subspace of the tangent space to the space of compatible complex structures on which the constructed Hitchin connection is defined is of finite codimension if the symplectic manifold is compact. It also proves uniqueness of the Hitchin connection under a further assumption. A number of examples show that this Hitchin connection is defined in a neighbourhood of the natural families of complex structures compatible with the given symplectic form which these spaces admit.

The theory of Hitchin systems is something like a ‘global theory of Lie groups’ where one works over a Riemann surface rather than just at a point. This chapter describes how one can take this analogy a few steps further by attempting to make precise the class of rich geometric objects that appear in this story (including the non-compact case) and discusses their classification, outlining a theory of ‘Dynkin diagrams’ as a step towards classifying some examples of such objects.

In the spring of 1791,Waldemar joins the French colonists already at Gallipolis, Ohio Territory, hitching a ride on the boats transporting soldiers down the Ohio River to fight the Indians. He was fortunate not to continue the journey past Gallipolis, for it would culminate in the disaster known as St. Clair's Defeat, in which 97% of the Americans are killed or wounded. Unlike the other colonists, Waldemar owns no land at Gallipolis; in fact, they only thought they had ownership, having been swindled by Joel Barlow and company back in France. He is assigned to be an "Indian spy," tasked with scouring the woods daily for signs of Indian presence. Actually, the Indians intentionally spare the French but repeatedly attack the American settlers, including Daniel Boone and his family, at nearby Point Pleasant, Virginia (now West Virginia). Life is hard for Waldemar, as he waits for Charlotte to arrive. The travails of the colony are recorded in two newspaper and magazine articles the Mentelles later wrote, one of which has remained unknown to historians until now.
