Abstract (sommario):
<p>The work is aimed at clarifying the psycholinguistic mechanism of Chinese hieroglyphic writing acquisition. The psycholinguistic experiment involved a survey and questionnaire among native and non-native speakers of Chinese regarding the perception of texts in two types of writing - hieroglyphic and transcriptional &mdash; according to four criteria: 1) speed of reading texts (subjective evaluation of respondents); 2) time taken to read texts in two different types of recording (objective evaluation); 3) degree of difficulty in perceiving transcribed texts (subjective evaluation of respondents); 4) number of times reading texts in pinyin transcription required to fully understand the content of the text (objective evaluation). Eight different authentic Chinese texts of different discourses with a total of 344 words were selected for the study, with the main group of respondents being native Chinese speakers of different professions, ages and gender, with different levels of English proficiency. A total of 128 respondents took part in the survey, of whom 55 respondents were native speakers of Chinese and 73 respondents were from different nationalities learning Chinese as a foreign language. The second part of the experiment was aimed at investigating the psycholinguistic mechanism of text transcoding from pinyin transcriptional recording to hieroglyphic recording by native speakers of Chinese. The results obtained allow us to say that, on average, reading texts of different discourses in pinyin transcription is 1.7 times longer than reading texts in hieroglyphic recording, reading and understanding texts written in pinyin transcription is more difficult for native speakers than reading and understanding hieroglyphic texts, especially texts of literary (poetic), folklore and ironic discourse, and when writing hieroglyphs, semantic and graphical errors are possible.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
Summary Publication of an early Roman offering table for the woman Tasouchion. The table probably came from the Fayum and was inscribed with a rare bilingual Hieroglyphic-Greek inscription. The Hieroglyphic text contains a ritual, while the Greek text offers a Greek version of the well-known and wide-spread Latin epitaph sit tibi terra levis. Both texts are analyzed in the context of ancient funerary practices.

Abstract (sommario):
The decipherment of ancient languages and scripts was a challenging mission for linguists and philologists. There are successful and unsuccessful attempts to decipher ancient and famous languages, of which is the Egyptian hieroglyphs. In 1822, Champollion announced in the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres his innovative methodology to read ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs when he could read the three scripts of the Rosetta Stone: Hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Greek. Champollion’s theory is based on finding a multi-script or multi-script text that is used as an aiding tool to read and decipher the required scripts. Thus, this paper sheds fresh light on the role of multilingualism in decoding ancient scripts. It is worth mentioning that the “Rosetta Stone” became an equivalent term of an assistance tool to crack ancient languages and scripts, giving examples of famous texts such as the Behistun Inscription and the manuscript copy of Landa alphabet.

Abstract (sommario):
“Multimodal graphic communication in Ancient Egypt: A method for analysis”: This article presents a method to analyse Hieroglyphic-Egyptian artefacts based on the semiotic approach of multimodality. In a first step, the theoretical background of multimodality research is given and its methodological application to Hieroglyphic-Egyptian text-image-compositions is discussed. In a second step, the method is illustrated analysing a relief from an Old Kingdom mastaba in Giza – the will of Wep-em-nefert (G8882). In a third step, some graphic techniques for information structuring are compared to similar techniques that can be found in Franco-Belgian comics. In indenting semiotic methods of multimodality research with Egyptology, this article presents a new perspective for the investigation of Hieroglyphic-Egyptian artefacts, which opens new grounds for both research areas and for interdisciplinary dialog.

Abstract (sommario):
As hieroglyphic languages, such as Chinese, differ from alphabetic languages, researchers have always been interested in using internal glyph features to enhance semantic representation. However, the models used in such studies are becoming increasingly computationally expensive, even for simple tasks like text classification. In this paper, we aim to balance model performance and computation cost in glyph-aware Chinese text classification tasks. To address this issue, we propose a lightweight ensemble learning method for glyph-aware Chinese text classification (LEGACT) that consists of typical shallow networks as base learners and machine learning classifiers as meta-learners. Through model design and a series of experiments, we demonstrate that an ensemble approach integrating shallow neural networks can achieve comparable results even when compared to large-scale transformer models. The contribution of this paper includes a lightweight yet powerful solution for glyph-aware Chinese text classification and empirical evidence of the significance of glyph features for hieroglyphic language representation. Moreover, this paper emphasizes the importance of assembling shallow neural networks with proper ensemble strategies to reduce computational workload in predictive tasks.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractWe describe a remarkable artifact discovered during our 2015 excavations at the Maya site of Nim li Punit, Belize. It is a T-shaped jade pectoral worn on the chest by ancient Maya kings during rites in which they scattered copal incense (Figure 1). These rituals are described or depicted on six carved stone monuments (stelae) at the site. What is more, two stelae at the site depict rulers wearing the pectoral. The reverse side of the jade contains a long historical hieroglyphic text. Had the piece been recovered by illegal means and ended up in a private collection, much of the text would make little sense and it could not possibly be ascribed to Nim li Punit. The priceless worth of the Nim li Punit pectoral, therefore, lies not only in its hieroglyphic inscription but also in its known archaeological context and contemporary images of its use. We briefly describe that context and present a translation of the important text on the jade pectoral, which we interpret as a “wind jewel.”

Abstract (sommario):
Karkemish is located on the West bank of Euphrates River, about 60 kilometres southeast of Gaziantep, Turkey, and 100 kilometres northeast of Aleppo, Syria. Ruins of the city, over 90 hectares, of which over 55 lie in Turkey and around 35 in Syria. Since 2011 Karkemish has been newly explored by a joint Turco-Italian Archaeological Expedition. During the 2016 excavation campaign by the Turco-Italian Archaeological Expedition at Karkemish, a fragment of a funerary stele bearing a Hieroglyphic Luwian text was unearthed in the Lower Palace area. The stele probably dates to the early eighth century BCE (reign of Yariri/Yarri) and belonged to the wife of a cultic official. In this article, after presenting an edition of the inscription in question, new values for the Anatolian hieroglyphic sign L375 (which is attested on the stele in the writing PURUS-L375-sá of the word *kummayalli(ya)s, “sacred priest”) and related signs such as L375, L144 (= *521), L74, L129, and L398 are suggested while reinterpreting several passages of hieroglyphic Luwian inscriptions from both the Empire and Late Hittite periods.

Abstract (sommario):
Results of fi eld surveys of an inscription on a rock near the Arkhara River, carried out in 2003 and 2014–2018, are outlined. Some graphemes of which it consists are written in red, others in black. The black ones, fi rst discovered in 2003, make up a coherent whole—a hieroglyphic text arranged in three columns consisting of 7, 10, and 7 signs. In 2004, a suggestion was made that the text is written in Jurchen hieroglyphic script. In 2014, this hypothesis, based on historical and archaeological evidence, received a linguistic support, and the text was translated. Judging by the available data, it was written on December 1, 1127, and is demonstrated to be the earliest Jurchen inscription known to date. The text mentions the author’s name—Shin Terin, and says that he had arrived in the Targhando mouke (military-administrative region). Apart from the text written in black, certain graphemes written in red are arranged in a linear sequence, suggesting that this is a text too. For the fi rst time, one of the “red” graphemes is published and shown to belong to Jurchen script. The results suggest that the Arkhara rock gallery includes Jurchen inscriptions that are highly relevant to Jurchen linguistics, toponymy, social and cultural history.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe article publishes an unprovenanced fragment of a stele housed in the Haluk Perk Museum in Istanbul. Palaeography and manner of inscription suggest an origin in the eighth century BC in the region known to the Neo-Assyrians as Tabal. The new text is largely incomprehensible due to its fragmentary state, as well as the fact that it contains otherwise unattested words and signs. However, in one case, a rare combination of signs persuades us to revise the reading of part of another recently published hieroglyphic document from the same period and area. The Istanbul text appears to contain a historical narrative relating to a warlike encounter. The article presents the text in hand-copy, photo, transliteration and translation, as well as supplying a detailed philological commentary.

Nederhof, Mark-Jan. "OCR of hand-written transcriptions of hieroglyphic text". Universitätsbibliothek Leipzig, 2016. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:15-qucosa-201704.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Encoding hieroglyphic texts is time-consuming. If a text already exists as hand-written transcription, there is an alternative, namely OCR. Off-the-shelf OCR systems seem difficult to adapt to the peculiarities of Ancient Egyptian. Presented is a proof-of-concept tool that was designed to digitize texts of Urkunden IV in the hand-writing of Kurt Sethe. It automatically recognizes signs and produces a normalized encoding, suitable for storage in a database, or for printing on a screen or on paper, requiring little manual correction. The encoding of hieroglyphic text is RES (Revised Encoding Scheme) rather than (common dialects of) MdC (Manuel de Codage). Earlier papers argued against MdC and in favour of RES for corpus development. Arguments in favour of RES include longevity of the encoding, as its semantics are font-independent. The present study provides evidence that RES is also much preferable to MdC in the context of OCR. With a well-understood parsing technique, relative positioning of scanned signs can be straightforwardly mapped to suitable primitives of the encoding.

The door is an important element of the egyptian tempel architecture. It is an independant edifice from the hall when it lies. It is constructed in a more resistant matter than the reste of the wall. We have studied, in the architectural part, the elements, that constitute the door : the threshold ; the posts, and the lintel. As about the door typology, we have distinguished three kinds : the monumental doors, the doors with opend lintel and the lateral doors. The decoration is conditioned by the composition of the door. So, the posts are divised in superposed registers, the lintel is occupied by symetrical tableau. The splaies are decorated by prophylactic signs. The essential part of our work concerns the door texts of the tempels of edfu and dendara. The the texts of the axial doors of the two tempels are translated in an exhaustive way. As for the lateral doors, we choised the most significant texts. The translations are followed by a philological and theological commentary and a conclusion upon the contents of the texts. In the general conclusion, we demonstrated the important role of the door in the egyptian tempel. By the choice of its texts and representations, the door summarizes which happens in the next hall of the tempel. A separated volume is reserved for the bibliography and indexes

Alvarez, Christelle. "Inscribing the pyramid of king Qakare Ibi : scribal practice and mortuary literature in late Old Kingdom Egypt". Thesis, University of Oxford, 2018. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:91f5c89d-1c1e-47e2-9780-1136e4b3b10c.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates how the burial chamber of the 8th Dynasty pyramid of king Qakare Ibi at Saqqara in Egypt (c. 2109-2107 B.C.) was inscribed. It uses a holistic approach to focus on the textual programme and its unusual aspects in comparison to older pyramids. In doing so, it addresses issues of textual transmission and of scribal practice in the process of inscribing the walls of subterranean chambers in pyramids. The aim is to contextualise the texts of Ibi within the Memphite tradition of Pyamid Texts and the development of mortuary literature on different media from the late third millennium BCE Old Kingdom to the Middle Kingdom in the early second millennium BCE. The first chapter presents the background to this research and information on king Ibi and his pyramid. The second chapter treats research on the arrangement of the texts on the walls of subterranean chambers of royal pyramids of kings and queens and compares the layout of the texts in the pyramid of Ibi with older pyramids. It then discusses in detail one section on the east wall of Ibi, where the order of spells diverges from other transmitted sequences. The unusual combination of spells and the practice of shortening spells is investigated further in the third chapter, where two sections of texts on the south wall are analysed. The fourth chapter explores garbled texts and discusses processes of copying and inscribing the texts onto the walls of pyramids. The fifth chapter analyses the modifications of the writing system in pyramids, especially the mutilation of hieroglyphs, and how this practice relates to the tradition of altering signs in pyramids. Finally, the sixth chapter synthesises the results of the preceding chapters in two sections. The first section summarises the process of inscribing pyramids and contextualises aspects of scribal practices within it. The second section concludes the thesis with a discussion of the features of the textual programme of Ibi and of how it relates to the broader transmission of mortuary literature.

Abstract The Papyrus that has preserved this story was given to Lepsius, over fifty years ago, by an English lady, Miss Westcar, who had brought it from Egypt. Acquired by the Berlin Museum in 1886, it was first made known by a summary analysis of it published by A. Erman, Einneuer Papyrus des Berliner Museums, in the National-Zeitung of Berlin (May 14, 1886), and has been reproduced by A. Erman,.£gypten und.£gyptisches Leben imA!tertum, 8vo, Tubingen, 18851, pp. 498-502; Ed. Meyer, Geschichte des alten.£gyptens, 8vo, Berlin, 1887, pp. 129-131. The translation given by me in the second edition of these tales was not so much a literal version as an adaptation, founded partly on a German translation, partly on a transcription in hieroglyphic characters communicated to me by Erman. Since then an English paraphrase has been inserted by W. M. Flinders Petrie in his Egyptian Tales, 1895, London, 12mo, vol. i, pp. 91142, and the text itself has been published in facsimile and in a hieroglyph transcription, and also translated into German by A. Erman, die Miirchen des Papyrus Westcar (forming vols. v-vi of the Mittheilungen aus den Orientalischen Sammlungen), 1890, Berlin, 4to, who has since reproduced his translation with various corrections in his pamphlet, Aus den Papyrus der Koniglichen Museen, 1899, Berlin, 8vo, pp. 30-42, and has introduced several passages of his transcription into hieroglyphs in his .£gyptische Chrestomathie, 1904, Berlin, 12mo, pp. 20-27.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter presents two examples that illustrate basic mathematical concepts used during the New Kingdom: Papyrus Harris I and Papyrus Wilbour. Papyrus Harris I is primarily a political document, documenting the relation between Ramses III and the temples of Egypt. It includes illustrations accompanied by hieroglyphic texts. The hieratic parts consist of lists of temple endowments and a brief summary of the entire reign of King Ramses III. The topic of the Wilbour papyrus is the administration of arable land, and thus this text is one of the sources one should take into account when reading the famous statement of Herodotus that geometry was invented in Egypt and then passed into Greece.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Ancient Egypt has widely caused fascination across different time periods and various cultures. Its reception can be traced back to antiquity and has never ceased since. The most recent modern outbursts of “Egyptomania” took place around key events such as the decipherment of the hieroglyphic script in 1822 and the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb a hundred years later. The main difference between the reception of ancient Egypt in general and the Book of the Dead is that, even before the decipherment of the hieroglyphs, the ancient Egyptian visual culture offered many subjects to be referenced in modern culture. As the chapters of the Book of the Dead are one of the most attested sources of the ancient Egyptian language, it is not surprising that they have received a fair amount of attention within the modern resurgence of interest in Egypt known as “Egyptomania.” However, this applies to only a few aspects of the corpus. Nevertheless, this text and its illustrations have experienced some obscure and, in some cases, even unintended reception in Western visual and performing arts (including movies) as well as in belles-lettres which this chapter aims to unravel.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 6 focuses on Laura Mulvey’s theoretical writings on film and her essay film Riddles of the Sphinx (1977), which it reads in relation to the feminist collaboration between Kelly and Mulvey that took place at the height of Women’s Liberation in Britain. Like Post-Partum Document, Riddles of the Sphinx creates a hieroglyphic aesthetic that mines the feminist possibilities of repressed maternal desires and draws out their connections to British colonial history. Replete with images of writing, the consistent attention to text in Riddles is the means by which Mulvey represents the pleasures of the maternal bond and transfers them into a form of fetishisation that opens onto collaborations between women that move across the lines of race and class. By placing the hieroglyph and the colonial extractions for which it figures in the context of women’s atomised struggles with reproductive labour in late capitalism, Riddles writes collective feminist reading practices that might allow women to correspond across the divisions created by colonial, racial, and class hierarchies and therefore create what Mulvey identifies in ‘Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema’ (1975), as a ‘new language of desire.’

Abstract (sommario):
Recently, Chinese event detection has attracted more and more attention. As a special kind of hieroglyphics, Chinese glyphs are semantically useful but still unexplored in this task. In this paper, we propose a novel Glyph-Aware Fusion Network, named GlyFN. It introduces the glyphs' information into the pre-trained language model representation. To obtain a better representation, we design a Vector Linear Fusion mechanism to fuse them. Specifically, it first utilizes a max-pooling to capture salient information. Then, we use the linear operation of vectors to retain unique information. Moreover, for large-scale unstructured text, we distribute the data into different clusters parallelly. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments on ACE2005 and large-scale data. Experimental results show that GlyFN obtains increases of 7.48(10.18%) and 6.17(8.7%) in the F1-score for trigger identification and classification over the state-of-the-art methods, respectively. Furthermore, the event detection task for large-scale unstructured text can be efficiently accomplished through distribution.
