In order to solve the problem of data integration and sharing for heterogeneous database at various departments from enterprises, this paper analyses thoroughly how to use the XML technology to mask differences between the heterogeneous databases. This paper designs an integration model based on the various heterogeneous databases by using the XML database as the middle database. The integration model is applied in the fault diagnosis system, and a data-exchange platform based on BizTalk is designed. On the heterogeneous database model, the fault diagnosis system can meets the need of multiple heterogeneous databases.

Many organizations invest heavily in heterogeneous databases according to organizational functions. These heterogeneous databases are stand-alone systems that do not interact with one another. The objective of this paper is to introduce a multi-database system (MDBMS) that interacts with other heterogeneous DBMS within the organization to integrate information processing. In this paper, we discuss the potential inconsistencies in integrating heterogeneous databases. We further extend to include issues in designing a MDBMS. With a MDBMS, data sharing across organization reduces overheads and costs, thus, provides a competitive advantage to the global firms.

As a part of the scientific database research underway at the Oregon Graduate Institute, we are collaborating with materials scientists in the research and development of an extensible modeling and computation environment for materials science. Materials scientists are prolific users of computers for scientific research. Modeling techniques and algorithms are well known and refined, and computerized databases of chemical and physical property data abound. However, applications are typically developed in isolation, using information models specifically tailored for the needs of each application. Furthermore, available computerized databases in the form of CDs and on-line information services are still accessed manually by the scientist in an off-line fashion. Thus researchers are repeatedly constructing and populating new custom databases for each application. The goal of our research is to bridge this gulf between applications and sources of data. We believe that object-oriented technology in general and data-bases in particular, provide powerful tools for transparently bridging the gap between programs and data. An object-oriented database that not only manages data generated by user applications, but also provides access to relevant external data sources can be used to bridge this gap. An object-oriented database for materials science data is described that brings together data from heterogeneous non-object-oriented sources and formats, and presents the user with a single, uniform object-oriented schema that transparently integrates these diverse databases. A unique multilevel architecture is presented that provides a mechanism for efficiently accessing both heterogeneous external data sources and new data stored within the database.

Medical digital image information storage standard and existing heterogeneous database technology were analyzed with view to the particularity of the standard for medical images; data in medical images were organized according to data organizational hierarchy in the DICOM standard and sophisticated relational databases were utilized to store medical images. Using XML as a middleware to connect medical image database to HIS and then through relational databases and XML transformation rules to complete the conversion of the two databases into XML document. The study indicated that the method is able to achieve the purpose of the connection of heterogeneous databases.

The technique of collaborative design and manufacture is not only very important, but also urgent necessary for space antenna. Building on unicode, XML provides the standard format describing data in various types, so it has the virtue of integrating heterogeneous databases. In this paper, the elementary research has been done on XML-based integrating technique for heterogeneous databases of space antenna. Firstly, the overall flow for collaborative design and manufacture of space antenna shows that five databases should be integrated. Secondly, a XML-based integration system frame is conceived for space antenna databases. Thirdly, an effective XML-based transformation mechanism is proposed for the data integration process between relational database and document-based database. Finally, the implement of XML-based database integration is demonstrated in a space antenna design.

In the process of data integration among heterogeneous databases, it is significantly important to analyze the identical attributes and characteristics of the databases. However, the existing main data attribute matching model has the defects of oversize matching space and low matching precision. Therefore, this paper puts forward a heterogeneous data attribute matching model on the basis of fusion of SOM and BP network through analyzing the attribute matching process of heterogeneous databases. This model firstly matches the heterogeneous data attributes in advance by SOM network to determine the centre scope of attribute data to be matched. Secondly, the accurate match will be carried out through BP network of the standard heterogeneous data various attribute center. Finally, the matching result of the relevant actual database shows that this model can effectively reduce the matching space in the case of complex pattern. As for the large-scale data matching, the matching accuracy is relatively high. The average precision is 89.52%, and the average recall rate is 100%.

Traditionally, applications have used a single database to fulfill their storage requirements. However, limiting storage to a specific type of database system may result in a compromise in some functionalities of the application due to database features. This paper proposes an architectural framework for an application to exploit heterogeneous databases with a polyglot approach. A working application to demonstrate the use of different databases for various modules of an application is presented. Two instances of MongoDB and a single instance of MySQL have been used in the proposed application. Container technology is used to deploy the application's services like databases and web server. The use of microservices has resulted in a completely flexible and scalable application that utilizes the desired features of heterogeneous databases for its constituent modules. The proposed architecture is validated and compared with existing models. The performance comparison results are tabulated for six crucial parameters listed in the ISO/IEC 25010 standard.

Quantitative MRI combines non-invasive imaging techniques to reveal alterations in muscle pathophysiology. Creating muscle-specific labels manually is time consuming and requires an experienced examiner. Semi-automatic and fully automatic methods reduce segmentation time significantly. Current machine learning solutions are commonly trained on data from healthy subjects using homogeneous databases with the same image contrast. While yielding high Dice scores (DS), those solutions are not applicable to different image contrasts and acquisitions. Therefore, the aim of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of automatic segmentation of a heterogeneous database. To create a heterogeneous dataset, we pooled lower leg muscle images from different studies with different contrasts and fields-of-view, containing healthy controls and diagnosed patients with various neuromuscular diseases. A second homogenous database with uniform contrasts was created as a subset of the first database. We trained three 3D-convolutional neuronal networks (CNN) on those databases to test performance as compared to manual segmentation. All networks, training on heterogeneous data, were able to predict seven muscles with a minimum average DS of 0.75. U-Net performed best when trained on the heterogeneous dataset (DS: 0.80 ± 0.10, AHD: 0.39 ± 0.35). ResNet and DenseNet yielded higher DS, when trained on a heterogeneous dataset (both DS: 0.86), as compared to a homogeneous dataset (ResNet DS: 0.83, DenseNet DS: 0.76). In conclusion, a CNN trained on a heterogeneous dataset achieves more accurate labels for predicting a heterogeneous database of lower leg muscles than a CNN trained on a homogenous dataset. We propose that a large heterogeneous database is needed, to make automated segmentation feasible for different kinds of image acquisitions.

Heterogeneous DNA methylation patterns are linked to tumor growth. In order to study DNA methylation heterogeneity patterns for breast cancer cell lines, we comparatively study four metrics: variance, I2 statistic, entropy, and methylation state. Using the categorical metric methylation state, we select the two most heterogeneous states to identify genes that directly affect tumor suppressor genes and high- or moderate-risk breast cancer genes. Utilizing the Gene Set Enrichment Analysis software and the ConsensusPath Database visualization tool, we generate integrated gene networks to study biological relations of heterogeneous genes. This analysis has allowed us to contribute 19 potential breast cancer biomarker genes to cancer databases by locating “hub genes” – heterogeneous genes of significant biological interactions, selected from numerous cancer modules. We have discovered a considerable relationship between these hub genes and heterogeneously methylated oncogenes. Our results have many implications for further heterogeneity analyses of methylation patterns and early detection of breast cancer susceptibility.

In data sharing systems, peers are acquainted through pair-wise data sharing settings/mappings for sharing and exchanging data. Besides query processing, supporting update exchange for interchanging data between peers is one of the challenging problems in data sharing systems. In update exchange, an update action posed to a peer is applied to the peer's local database instance and then the update is propagated to the related peers. Previous work on update exchange have considered update propagation considering schema-level mappings between peers, which are conceptually similar to the view maintenance problem. However, there are data sharing systems, where peers are acquainted by instance-level mappings. In such a system, peers use different schemas and data vocabularies to represent semantically same real world entities. The instance-level mappings express how data in one peer relate to data in another peer. One of the problems in exchanging updates in instance-mapped data sharing systems is to translate updates correctly between heterogeneous peers. The translation should be such that insertions, deletions, and modifications of the tuples made by an update in a peer and by the translated version of the update in an acquainted peer are related through the mappings between them. In this paper, we investigate such a mechanism for translating update actions between heterogeneous peer data sources. Before discussing the translation mechanism, the paper first formalize the notion of update translation and derive conditions under which the translation mechanism will produce correct translations of updates.

AbstractIntegrating heterogeneous data in distributed databases has been a research issue for many years. In this paper, we discuss some of these problems and propose a solution using a semantic model. This semantic model is built upon the semantic relationships between existing data. Applying these semantics enables us to take into account different dimensions of user queries and find the best possible answer for them. The proposed approach leads us to introducing "a common language that is understandable for all databases". We use such a common language in order to return an effective response to the user’s query, as well as reducing the problems of integration.
