Abstract (sommario):
In the push to provide further interaction with museum and heritage exhibitions, the internet has become an established venue, offering nearly unlimited space and options for providing extensions to in-person content. These internet-based supplements in many cases outlast the physical displays they are meant to accompany. After the exhibitions have closed and the museums have moved on, the digital content remains, a static placeholder for a particular viewpoint on heritage, curation, and public outreach. Such is the case with the Interface Experience, the Web extension to the exhibition of the same name, which ran for a few months in 2015 (Bard Graduate Center [BGC] 2014a). This site, which remains largely functional, is now disconnected from the exhibition it was meant to accompany, leaving it to stand alone as a study on the connections between digital outputs and materiality.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent years, many countries around the world have been implementing their own protective practices for intangible cultural heritage under the impetus of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention. This study will conduct an in-depth investigation into the intangible cultural heritage of Kangwei paintings in Yuanping City, Shanxi Province, China, exploring the process of cultural identity formation and the role of commercialization in the context of intangible cultural heritage revitalization, an area that has not been deeply researched before.Using the systematic literature review method, a review was conducted on 102 relevant documents and journal articles sourced from China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Conduct a literature review from the perspectives of overall research characteristics, highly cited literature, theoretical foundations, and research methods. The results of the literature analysis are systematically elaborated from the aspects of the connotation and extension of Kangwei paintings, the practical mechanisms for the revitalization of Kangwei paintings as intangible cultural heritage, and related suggestions. The study found that the practical mechanisms for the revitalization of Kangwei paintings as intangible cultural heritage include institutional support mechanisms, theoretical consolidation mechanisms, collaborative mechanisms, social education mechanisms, application innovation mechanisms, and efficiency evaluation mechanisms, with no related research proposed. Therefore, based on the framework for the revitalization of Yuanping Kangwei paintings, the prospects of cultural identity and commercialization concepts are proposed: solidifying the theoretical foundation for the revitalization of Kangwei paintings as intangible cultural heritage, scientifically defining the connotations and extensions of Kangwei paintings, refining the cultural identity mechanism for the revitalization of Kangwei paintings as intangible cultural heritage, and enriching the theoretical foundation for the study of the commercialization of Kangwei paintings.

Abstract (sommario):
Compared to traditional dance, intangible cultural heritage dance often involves the isotropic extension of choreographic actions, utilizing both upper and lower limbs. This characteristic choreography style makes the remote joints lack interaction, consequently reducing accuracy in existing human motion prediction methods. Therefore, we propose a human motion prediction method based on the multi-scale hypergraph convolutional network of the intangible cultural heritage dance video. Firstly, this method inputs the 3D human posture sequence from intangible cultural heritage dance videos. The hypergraph is designed according to the synergistic relationship of the human joints in the intangible cultural heritage dance video, which is used to represent the spatial correlation of the 3D human posture. Then, a multi-scale hypergraph convolutional network is constructed, utilizing multi-scale transformation operators to segment the human skeleton into different scales. This network adopts a graph structure to represent the 3D human posture at different scales, which is then used by the single-scalar fusion operator to spatial features in the 3D human posture sequence are extracted by fusing the feature information of the hypergraph and the multi-scale graph. Finally, the Temporal Graph Transformer network is introduced to capture the temporal dependence among adjacent frames within the time domain. This facilitates the extraction of temporal features from the 3D human posture sequence, ultimately enabling the prediction of future 3D human posture sequences. Experiments show that we achieve the best performance in both short-term and long-term human motion prediction when compared to Motion-Mixer and Motion-Attention algorithms on Human3.6M and 3DPW datasets. In addition, ablation experiments show that our method can predict more precise 3D human pose sequences, even in the presence of isotropic extensions of upper and lower limbs in intangible cultural heritage dance videos. This approach effectively addresses the issue of missing segments in intangible cultural heritage dance videos.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Previous research has found that heritage speakers of Spanish sometimes extend canonically third-person singular (3PS) verbal morphology to first-person singular (1PS) subjects, a pattern that has been reported with both children and adults across a variety of different verbal paradigms (e.g., preterite). However, despite clear evidence of 3PS extensions in heritage Spanish, no previous research has systematically investigated the factors that shape this common, yet still poorly understood morphological tendency. To test whether heritage speakers’ likelihood of extending 3PS forms is shaped by paradigmatic frequency, the present study investigated adult heritage speakers’ production and comprehension of person agreement in the present perfect paradigm, which is relatively low frequency in Latin American/US varieties of Spanish, and the preterite paradigm, which is relatively much more frequent. 30 adult heritage speakers of Latin American/US Spanish completed two oral production tasks and one listening comprehension task, all of which targeted their knowledge of 1PS and 3PS morphology in both the present perfect and preterite paradigms. Results of the production experiments revealed that heritage speakers were far more likely to extend 3PS morphology to 1PS subjects in the present perfect paradigm than in the preterite paradigm, an asymmetry that we attribute to the lower relative frequency of present perfect verb forms. In the comprehension task, participants performed similarly by extending 1PS readings to canonically 3PS inflections more often in the present perfect than in the preterite. Together, these novel results indicate that heritage speakers are more likely to extend 3PS inflections in the paradigms that they use less, a finding with key implications for our understanding of how language experience shapes the variable morphological systems that heritage speakers develop.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Unrecognised Historical places, which are locations with history but lacking official recognition, particularly prevalent in Southeast Asia, often face a dearth of accessible historical information. To tackle this challenge, there is an urgent need to commence the collection and documentation of historical data concerning Unrecognised Historical places. This initiative aims to prevent the loss of history, given that such sites are frequently subjected to rapid development and commercialization. To date, City Geography Markup Language (CityGML), an Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standard 3D data format, has been developed for presenting city models along with semantic data and is often used in the heritage domain for preservation. It aids in digital infrastructure development and the conservation of urban elements. Furthermore, it provides a mechanism to extend the standard data model to meet the requirements of various purposes. While several CityGML extensions tailored to the documentation of Cultural Heritage already exist, there is currently no extension specifically designed to address the requirements of Unrecognised Historical places. The aim of this paper is to identify a suitable approach for developing a new standardised data model that integrates geometric and semantic information, which is demonstrated for the modelling of Telukbetung, an old city in Bandar Lampung through time.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents an integrated framework applied towards the design and evaluation of a virtual museum of Byzantine art that combines the theorized fields of semiotics, virtual heritage (VH), and Byzantine art. A devised semiotic model, the case study semiosphere, synthesizes important principles from the theoretical background justifying the overall design and evaluation methodology. The approach presented has theoretical extensions to the understanding of the role technology plays in promoting a consummatory aesthetic experience for Byzantine art in virtual environments, complementing the experience received from traditional Byzantine art media. Part A of the work presents the development of the semiotic foundation of the study prior to presenting the applied potential of the approach in design and evaluation of VH for Byzantine art, which appears in Part B. The final task of the proposed approach aims to support a meaningful interpretation, assisting in the promotion of the significance (value) of the virtual museum to potential interpreters/visitors.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Collecting knowledge in the form of databases consisting of images and descriptive texts that represent objects from past centuries is a fundamental part of preserving cultural heritage. In this context, images with known information about depicted artifacts can serve as a source of information for automated methods to complete existing collections. For instance, image classifiers can provide predictions for different object properties (tasks) to semantically enrich collections. A challenge in this context is to train such classifiers given the nature of existing data: Many images do not come along with a class label for all tasks (incomplete samples) and class distributions are commonly imbalanced. In this paper, these challenges are addressed by a multi-task training strategy for a classifier based on a convolutional neural network (SilkNet) that requires images with class labels for the tasks to be learned. The proposed approach can deal with incomplete training examples, while implicitly taking interdependencies between tasks into account. Extensions of the training approach with a focus on hard examples during training as well as the use of an auxiliary feature clustering are developed to counteract problems with class imbalance. Evaluation is conducted based on a dataset consisting of images of historical silk fabrics with labels for five tasks, i.e. silk properties. A comparison of different variants of the classifier shows that the extensions of the training approach significantly improve the classifier’s performance; the average F1-score is up to 5.0% larger, where the largest improvements occur with underrepresented classes of a task (up to +14.3%).

Abstract (sommario):
This case is developed to discuss options related to strategy in general and marketing strategy in particular that were implemented by an iconic brand—Old Monk—in the compelling attempt to revive the its brand value and relevance. The protagonist in the case is Mr Hemanth Mohan, the Director of this brand who is faced with serious challenges in resurrecting the brand in a hypercompetitive, ever-changing lifestyle alcoholic beverages market in India. The most significant of the challenges faced by Mr Mohan are changing tastes and preferences of the consumer, new foreign brands entering into the market, strong regulation, close monitoring from the government, and the monopoly of state-managed liquor retail chains. This case addresses and provides for the evaluation of various strategic options available for the brand in terms of repositioning itself in the relevant markets. The case presents questions related to how effectively a traditional brand can carry forward the legacy to redeem its brand value in the light of changing tastes and customer preferences. The case proposes to bring to light the importance of strategic decisions to be made around managing brand extensions in addressing the dilemma of brand value being spread too thin versus capitalizing on the past glory of the brand in finding life for the newly launched products under the known umbrella. This case is developed with an intent to be discussed among students pursuing undergraduate and/or graduate education in management discipline. The case is well aligned to be relevant for discussing concepts related to brand management, marketing strategy, strategic management, and consumer behavior. The content of this case is designed to be discussed and delivered in a typical 90-min class session, allowing students 120 min of pre-reading time and 120 min of post-discussion report preparation.

The hydrological environment must be understood before water flow can be adequately controlled to prevent slope failure without impacting unduly on the hydrological mountain slope environment. We conducted field studies to determine current sites and measurement of ground temperature 1 meter deep to clarify groundwater flow passageways on the slope behind the cultural heritage temple Kiyomizudera in Kyoto. Results showed anomalous temperature 1 meter deep bands on the slope and several springs that are extensions of these bands. Several of these bands coincide with terrain deformations such as gullies and slope failure scars indicating the probability of relationships between groundwater flow and topological deformation.

Abstract (sommario):
Australia has one of the highest rates of biodiversity loss globally. Both a lack of long-term monitoring and inefficient management have been identified as major contributing factors. Reviewing national and international reports, perspectives and scientific studies on Australia’s biodiversity management, I propose five steps to promote more effective management and monitoring of protected biodiversity assets by utilising available resources more efficiently. These steps involve: (1) better promotion of existing legislative instruments to protect biodiversity on private land; (2) creating strategic buffer zones around Australia’s World Heritage Areas (WHAs) – such buffer zones would provide opportunities to reduce threats to the biological assets of WHAs that emanate from adjacent areas; (3) better engagement with stakeholders of the buffer zones in managing WHAs through their participation in evidence-based monitoring and early-threat detection (e.g. as ‘Buffer-based Heritage Watch’); (4) targeted and coordinated restoration of native habitats adjacent to WHAs that are supported by effective carbon sequestration schemes; and (5) periodic integration of private protected areas within buffer zones into adjacent WHAs in accordance with the guidelines for extensions of WHAs by the World Heritage Committee. I demonstrate and justify the proposed steps using a spatial analysis of protected areas in Far North Queensland, but the proposed steps have relevance to protected areas in other Australian jurisdictions. The proposed steps would make current efforts of biodiversity protection and monitoring more efficient and would thus contribute to Australia’s response to its current loss of biodiversity.

Abstract (sommario):
Three-dimensional digital technology is important in the maintenance and monitoring of cultural heritage sites. This study focuses on using a combination of terrestrial laser scanning and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photogrammetry to establish a three-dimensional model and the associated digital documentation of the Magoksa Temple, Republic of Korea. Herein, terrestrial laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry was used to acquire the perpendicular geometry of the buildings and sites, where UAV photogrammetry yielded higher planar data acquisition rate in upper zones, such as the roof of a building, than terrestrial laser scanning. On comparing the two technologies’ accuracy based on their ground control points, laser scanning was observed to provide higher positional accuracy than photogrammetry. The overall discrepancy between the two technologies was found to be sufficient for the generation of convergent data. Thus, the terrestrial laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry data were aligned and merged post conversion into compatible extensions. A three-dimensional (3D) model, with planar and perpendicular geometries, based on the hybrid data-point cloud was developed. This study demonstrates the potential for using the integration of terrestrial laser scanning and UAV photogrammetry in 3D digital documentation and spatial analysis of cultural heritage sites.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes a mapping of linked data vocabularies in the area of person-related information. Aligning vocabulary terms may help curb the problem of property proliferation that occurs in linked data environments. It also facilitates the process of choosing semantics for vocabulary extensions and integration in the context of linked data applications. Although a work in progress, this investigation would provide support for semantic integration and for knowledge sharing and reuse in the area of personal information representation. It also offers an opportunity to reflect on a new generation of knowledge organization systems such as linked data vocabularies that have started to populate the web and are converging with new representation models and discovery tools in libraries and other cultural heritage institutions.

Abstract (sommario):
This article addresses an important aspect of the built heritage documentation, which concerns encoding information about a building in a formal way, making it available for reuse by the research community. Formal ontologies allow structuring and integrating information from heterogeneous sources without loss of semantic information. In the field of Cultural Heritage (CH), the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) ontology is well known and widely accepted as it provides definitions and a formal structure to describe the implicit and explicit concepts and relationships used in the CH documentation. One of its extensions, the CRMba model, has been specifically designed to document information on a built structure and its components. In this work, we have applied the CRMba model to the documentation of Roman architectures, in particular, Roman amphitheatres, demonstrating how the semantic model allows encoding information about the structure of the building and its evolution over time and space, stressing on the concepts of “empty spaces” and “functional spaces” defined by form, and focusing on the relationship between form and function. The aim of the work is to explore the potentiality of the model and to provide, through a series of examples supported by graphs, standard encoding procedures to be reused by scholars dealing with similar case studies.

Abstract (sommario):
Adapting outdated building stocks’ operations to meet current environmental and economic demands poses significant challenges that, to be faced, require a shift toward digitalization in the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation sectors. Digital tools capable of acquiring, structuring, sharing, processing, and visualizing built assets’ data in the form of knowledge need to be conceptualized and developed to inform asset managers in decision-making and strategic planning. This paper explores how building information modeling and building performance simulation technologies can be integrated into digital decision support systems (DSS) to make building data accessible and usable by non-digital expert operators through user-friendly services. The method followed to develop the digital DSS is illustrated and then demonstrated with a simulation-based application conducted on the heritage case study of the Faculty of Engineering in Bologna, Italy. The analysis allows insights into the building’s energy performance at the space and hour scale and explores its relationship with the planned occupancy through a data visualization approach. In addition, the conceptualization of the DSS within a digital twin vision lays the foundations for future extensions to other technologies and data, including, for example, live sensor measurements, occupant feedback, and forecasting algorithms.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the Architectural Heritage field is constantly proving to be a fertile ground for the experimentation of innovative systems for the enhancement and management of cultural heritage. Regarding to the management of the entire process, the building field is increasing in efficiency from the construction to the management phase; conversely, the approach to historical buildings opens up interesting and heterogeneous scenarios, according to different levels of complexity. The presented work is the result of a collaboration between the Politecnico di Torino and the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura of Granada: the main scope was to create an historic building information model (H-BIM) of the building that today hosts the Faculty of Architecture (ETSAG), taking into account its historical past from the sixteenth century up to the present day, as the result of many modifications, extensions and different use classifications over time. According to this, the BIM methodology can be considered as a bridge between the archive documentation and the digital model, proving to be an effective tool as a data repository, semantically oriented, not only constituted by geometry, but also by alpha-numerical attributes, improving in effectiveness if it is directly related to formal language object oriented.</p>

The wealth of data available to the researchers and to the curious citizen seems limitless today. For this reason tools able to retrieve and put together pieces of useful data are in growing need. This study is looking into Application Programming Interfaces as means to establish an ecosystem fostering data interoperability for persons and machines. The research and culture landscape is in a continuous need for accessing to data and metadata. For this reason, a set of the most representative service providers were investigated through the filter of data accessibility, and how the data provided fit the needs of possibly machine-assisted tools. The providers are well established actors in the scholarly communication arena with a host of some from the culture heritage field. A supplementary set of trusted repositories which are recipients of CoreTrustSeal (CTS) were investigated in searching for interoperability extensions via APIs.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper is principally concerned with native title issues as they affect oil and gas exploration and production. However, it also reviews Aboriginal heritage laws and practices because they have the potential to be just as disruptive to an expeditious exploration program or to the construction of a production facility as do native title claims. The paper focusses on onshore petroleum exploration and production because the right to negotiate under the Native Title Act (NTA) does not apply offshore. However, the paper does consider offshore because the NTA can still affect offshore petroleum explorers and producers; either because their area of interest could include an island within a State or Territory jurisdiction or because the facilities to treat the offshore oil and gas could be located onshore. The paper examines the key provisions of the NTA which are relevant to petroleum explorers and producers, principally the subject of tenure to ground. It considers the validity of already granted titles. It then examines the process of application for new titles.Although the NTA is the common source of problems throughout Australia, it is necessary for the paper to consider the situation in each State and Territory, since the titles are different and the government processes of dealing with native title issues differs in each jurisdiction.Although the focus of the paper is on how to cope with the right to negotiate, the paper considers some of the categories of future acts in respect of which the right to negotiate does not apply (specifically, procedures for infrastructure titles, renewals and extensions of titles, the expedited procedure, indigenous land use agreements, reserve land and approved exploration etc acts). The paper mentions the Federal Court decisions in the Miriuwung Gajerrong and Croker Island native title claims and ponders the options for the High Court in deciding the recent appeals. The paper’s conclusion is that a negotiated agreement is the only way to cope with native title issues. The contents of such an agreement are considered.

Abstract (sommario):
The author analyzes the reconstruction of the historical buildings of Kyiv in the 1920s – 1930s. The causes and consequences of such reconstructions on the preservation of the authentic appearance of the historical and cultural heritage of the city are researched. Particular attention is focuses on the classification of resonstruction types. Each of the types of such reconstructions is analyzed, its characteristics, causes, consequences and specific examples are given. There are four such types in the article. The first type includes buildings superimposed on the upper floors (floor). This was the most common way of reconstruction of Kyiv buildings of the 19th – early 20th centuries. Excluding a few successful examples of such reconstructions, most of them had detrimental effects on the architecture and had low aesthetics. The second type includes a rather rare type – extensions of buildings. The quality of such reconstruction examples is pretty different, but it did not improve the architecture of reconstructed buildings. The third type is a cardinal reconstruction, which provided not only an extension or superstructure but also a complete change of facade decor and architectural style. As a result of such reconstructions, many valuable examples of the architecture of the past were lost. The value and architectural aesthetics of the reconstructed buildings were different. There were examples when the rebuilt buildings did not yield to the beauty of the previous ones, but often such reconstructions led to the architectural degradation of buildings. The fourth type of reconstruction was to deprive buildings of certain decorative and structural elements without replacing them with new ones. Such works were aimed at simplifying the further repair and maintenance of the building in conditions of total nationalization.

Abstract (sommario):
Batik is one of the works and cultural heritage of Indonesia which is a combination of art and technology by the ancestors of the Indonesian nation. Batik has various types and various ways of making such as written, stamped, dyed, and many more. With so many existing batik-making processes, the scope of human movement is certainly very broad. This can cause various complaints, especially in the lower extremity body because the position of the body when working is not in an ergonomic position. In this case, of course, the role of physiotherapy is needed to provide direction and solutions to complaints that occur. This is what happened to the batik craftsmen of Nur Hasida who felt a complaint in the form of achy pain in the lower extremities of the body. Therefore, several exercises were carried out such as warming-up (sprinting in place and jumping jacks), strengthening (squats, split squats, side leg raises and reverse lunges), and stretching (quad stretches, inner thigh stretches, and toe extensions). to strengthen the muscles of the lower extremities as well as education about ergonomic positions while working.

Abstract (sommario):
Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) reflects a region’s history and culture, serving as a significant indicator of regional identity and cohesion. The Grand Canal Basin in China is rich in historical traditions, containing a rich array of ICH resources. Analyzing the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics and influencing factors of ICH within the Grand Canal Basin of China can provide a scientific basis for developing cultural industries and promoting sustainable regional economic growth. This study employed GIS-based spatial analysis methods, including kernel density estimation, the mean nearest neighbor index, and standard deviation ellipse, to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of 504 national-level ICH items (including extensions) in the Grand Canal Basin of China. The results demonstrate the significant spatial clustering of ICH, with concentrations in high-density regions, particularly at the northern and southern ends of the canal. There is significant regional disparity in the distribution of ICH, with an uneven quantity and structure, predominantly featuring traditional skills and traditional drama categories. The average centroid shift of ICH exhibits a north-to-south oscillatory trajectory. However, overall, it demonstrates a southward-moving trend. This study also underscores the impacts of urbanization, population density, economic development, and transportation infrastructure on ICH distribution. Among these factors, urbanization exerts the strongest influence on the spatial distribution of ICH. The impact of the natural environment is relatively minor; however, it remains a significant element that cannot be overlooked during development. This research offers valuable data and insights for local governments and institutions to formulate evidence-based strategies for the protection and sustainable utilization of ICH resources, promoting sustainable cultural and economic development in the Grand Canal Basin.

Abstract (sommario):
Completed in 2009, the European Proximity Operations Simulator 2.0 (EPOS 2.0) succeeded EPOS 1.0 at the German Space Operations Center (GSOC). One of the many contributions the old EPOS 1.0 facility made to spaceflight rendezvous is the verification of the Jena-Optronik laser-based sensors used by the Automated Transfer Vehicle. While EPOS 2.0 builds upon its heritage, it is a completely new design aiming at considerably more complex rendezvous scenarios. During the last ten years, GSOC’s On-Orbit-Servicing & Autonomy group, who operates, maintains and evolves EPOS 2.0, has made numerous contributions to the field of uncooperative rendezvous, using EPOS as its primary tool. After general research in optical navigation in the early 2010s, the OOS group took a leading role in the DLR project “On-Orbit-Servicing End-to-End Simulation” in 2014. EPOS 2.0 served as the hardware in the loop simulator of the rendezvous phase and contributed substantially to the project’s remarkable success. Over the years, E2E has revealed demanding requirements, leading to numerous facility improvements and extensions. In addition to the OOS group’s research work, numerous and diverse open-loop test campaigns for industry and internal (DLR) customers have shaped the capabilities of EPOS 2.0 significantly.

Abstract (sommario):
Through his compositional contributions, Ferdo Wiesner Livadić enriched the Croatian (sacral) musical creativity of the age of Romanticism, realizing – alongside thirty church/sacral »small form« pieces – also one mass in Latin (Missa in C), and one in Croatian, with the title (Missa croatica pastoralis) as well as the titles of its parts/movements in Latin. By observing the autographical scores of the two Livadić’s masses, certain reflections regarding their similarities and differences had resulted; first of all, in terms of textual and language base, composition structure, performers’ ensamble, composing procedures and use of musical expression elements, their purpose, and finally, their artistic range and significance. Created at the time of predominance of small, chamber music forms, especially solo songs, piano miniatures and reveilles, Livadić’s masses, among a multitude of works of the composers of the time, and especially within the Croatian church musical heritage, mean the continuity of a multi-Century tradition of that music genre. While Missa croatica pastoralis is related to the pastoral (folk) one voice masses with the organ accompaniment (with inserted text/extensions of the Kajkavian dialect), the concerto vocal-orchestral Missa in C, with its musical features and its base on the international music vocabulary, manifests a compound of Classicist simplicity and early Romantic lyricism, representing the essence of Livadić’s creativity in the area of sacral music.

Abstract (sommario):
The facades of buildings stand as one of the most influential aesthetic elements in urban and rural districts, serving as a boundary between exterior and interior while historically expressing various cultural and climatic functions. In Mazandaran Province, Iran, historical and rural areas have often been overlooked, leading to inappropriate approaches in reusing and renovating these buildings without considering their values. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the facades of various historical and rural houses to provide a solid foundation for architects dealing with their reuse and renovation or the design of extensions to the existing buildings. In addition to discussing practical applications, this paper offers a methodological approach for scholars active in the field of rural architecture. The research method includes an analysis of several historical houses, drawing from both literature and field studies. The formal approach has been chosen to align with the research goal. The sixteen selected cases are situated in the historical and rural districts of Alasht, Lafour, Qaemshahr, each built in different historical periods of Iran. Given that many historical houses in this area are not officially listed as heritage buildings and no data regarding them are available, the researchers conducted field surveys and interviews with residents to collect the necessary information. The investigation focused on facade elements, including the pattern of openings and the materials used in the selected houses. This research led to the documentation of the facade shapes in the rural areas of Mazandaran Province, highlighting the necessity of documentation to establish a knowledge base before reuse, renovation, or design within these historic regions. This approach could serve as a model for other regions and countries.

Abstract (sommario):
The rapid advances in learning technologies, computer modeling, multimedia and spatial sciences, as well as the availability of many powerful graphics PCs and workstations, make 3-D modeling-based methods for personalized e-learning with eCAD (modeling) functionality feasible. Personalized eCAD learning is a new term in engineering, environment and architecture education, related to the development of learning educational units (3-D learning objects) with re-usable digital architecture functionality, and introduced to literature for the first time within this paper. In particular, for university education courses in eCAD, digital architecture, design computing and CAAD (reagarding spatial information systems, architectures, monuments, cultural heritage sites, etc.), such a e-learning methodolgy must be able to derive spatial, pictorial, geometric, spatial, topological, learning and semantic information from the target object (a 3-D model) or scene (a 3-D landscape environment) or procedure (a 3-D simulation approach to a phenomenon), in such a way that it can be directly used for e-learning purposes regarding the spatial topology, the history, the architecture, the structure and the temporal (time-based) 3-D geometry of the projected object, scene or procedure. This paper is about the system design of such a e-learning method. For this purpose, the requirements, objectives and pedagogical extensions are presented and discussed. Finaly, a practical project is used to demonstrate the functionality and the performance of the proposed methodology in architecture

Abstract. In Europe and beyond, the cultural and archaeological heritage may have considerable extensions of hundreds of square metres if not kilometres. It is then necessary to study highly efficient techniques able , at the same time, to maintain centimetric accuracy. In these contexts, the SLAM technique can be an efficient solution. We tested the latter in a survey of a portion of the so-called Roman Villa of Caposele, also known as Villa Rubino in Formia, (Italy): the “Ninfeo Maggiore” and “Ninfeo Minore” (Major and Minor nymphaeum). The two structures had to be surveyed for both conservation and study purposes and to allow a virtual visit, which is particularly important since they are located inside a private property. The structure is complex, with a succession of rooms and environments in an archaeological complex extending approximately 480 metres in an east-west direction and approximately 50 metres in a south-north direction. We decided to survey both nymphaea with the “GEOSLAM Zeb Horizon”, also surveying all the internal connecting rooms and corridors between them. Both nymphaea were also surveyed with a “Faro” terrestrial laser scanning, to allow comparison. To verify the validity of the SLAM on the outside, a survey was carried out using a DJI Matrix drone with laser scanning. The comparison showed very limited deviations whose statistical validation is in progress, demonstrating that the SLAM technique can advantageously be used in such vast archaeological complexes where the efficiency and completeness of the survey is more important than the millimetric accuracy.

Abstract (sommario):
Khnefiss National Park has a very unique advantage of presenting three landscape morphologies of high quality: the coastal band, where the sea, dunes and cliffs mix; the lagoon zone, with its multiple interlacing water, algae and sand; and the vast desert, with its regs, hamadas, krebs, and dune extensions. It is unique and original at the world level for a protected area to retain in a single perimeter these three major ecosystems, which therefore gives this national park an exceptional quality. Khnefiss national park faces numerous natural, human-induced, institutional, organizational, and legal constraints. Hence, there is a need for a practical tool that would reconcile the imperatives of conservation, the demands of the local population, and tourism, and at the same time positively address the constraints that hamper the management of this geosite. Indeed, we will highlight a reflection that aims at clarifying the sense of this new trajectory in which Morocco is positioned in terms of interest development of geological heritage, the emergence of consumption of natural assets, and potentialities phenomenon according to regions. Therefore, all actions are based on values of citizenship, participative, responsibility, ethicality, and fairness. Indeed, the geosites have small to large scale characteristics (from ten meters to more than 10 km). The geosite inventory is based on the geoconservation strategy. Qualitative and quantitative assessments were carried out on the basis of geoheritage values of international significance. Thene, geoconservation efforts should be made in all these geosites for many reasons, such as valorization of academic research, preservation of natural resources, and promotion of geotourism in Khnefiss national park.

Abstract (sommario):
The study of human evolution has been revolutionized by inferences from ancient DNA analyses. Key to these studies is the reliable estimation of the age of ancient specimens. High-resolution age estimates can often be obtained using radiocarbon dating, and, while precise and powerful, this method has some biases, making it of interest to directly use genetic data to infer a date for samples that have been sequenced. Here, we report a genetic method that uses the recombination clock. The idea is that an ancient genome has evolved less than the genomes of present-day individuals and thus has experienced fewer recombination events since the common ancestor. To implement this idea, we take advantage of the insight that all non-Africans have a common heritage of Neanderthal gene flow into their ancestors. Thus, we can estimate the date since Neanderthal admixture for present-day and ancient samples simultaneously and use the difference as a direct estimate of the ancient specimen’s age. We apply our method to date five Upper Paleolithic Eurasian genomes with radiocarbon dates between 12,000 and 45,000 y ago and show an excellent correlation of the genetic and 14C dates. By considering the slope of the correlation between the genetic dates, which are in units of generations, and the 14C dates, which are in units of years, we infer that the mean generation interval in humans over this period has been 26–30 y. Extensions of this methodology that use older shared events may be applicable for dating beyond the radiocarbon frontier.

Abstract (sommario):
From the point of view of semiotics, the essential contribution of John Deely consists in having made us all aware of the richness of the Scholastic heritage, and to have explained it to us latter-day semioticians. Even for those, who, like the present author, think that semiotics was alive and well between the dawn of the Latin Age, and the rediscovery of Scholastic realism by Peirce, the notions coined by the Scholastic philosophers are intriguing. To make sense of scholastic notions such as ens reale and ens rationis is not a straightforward matter, but it is worthwhile trying to do so, in particular by adapting these notions to ideas more familiar in the present age. Starting out from the notions of Scholastic Realism, we try in the following to make sense of the different meanings of meaning, only one of which is the sign. It will be suggested that there are counterparts to ens rationis, not only in the thinking of some contemporary philosophers, but also, in a more convoluted way, in the discussion within cognitive science about different extensions to the mind. The recurrent theme of the paper will be Deely’s musing, according to which signs, unlike any other kind of being, form relations which may connect things which are mind-dependent (ens rationis) and mind-independent (ens reale). The import of this proposition is quite different if is applied to what we will call the Augustinian notion of the sign, or to the Fonseca notion, which is better termed intentionality. In both cases, however, mind-dependence will be shown to have a fundamental part to play. Following upon the redefinition of Medieval philosophy suggested by Deely, we will broach a redefinition of something even wider: meaning even beyond signs.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. In the last decades, surveys produced with geomatic techniques are increasingly used for the study and conservation of the built heritage because they automatically collect large amounts of data with an accuracy and objectivity that could not be achieved with traditional techniques. As in other fields of digital and spatial humanities, the combination of spatial data with archival and secondary sources provides new tools for reconstructing the history, construction, and transformation of a historic architecture. The new digital survey of Pitti Palace, which was carried out between 2019 and 2021, has revealed aspects neglected by previous surveys and historical studies. Pitti Palace is the largest historical civil building in Florence. In the 16th century, Bartolomeo Ammannati carried out important extensions, including the so-called "spiral staircase", one of the most important staircases in the palace. This staircase, of which there is little documentation, although it is considered a masterpiece, was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century by Pasquale Poccianti to make way for the "New Secondary Staircase", on which previous studies have focused mainly on stylistic and decorative aspects.Using digital spatial data as a primary source, the research aimed to explain the construction history of the new staircase built by Poccianti, allowing a precise comparison between the archive documents and the actual geometry of the building elements. It also highlights previously undocumented features, including the evidence for the Ammannati staircase and the important changes made during the construction of the new staircase. The article shows how the insertion of the new staircase profoundly altered the design, structure and layout of a wing of the Pitti Palace. It also suggests how a more transdisciplinary and holistic approach helps the study of historical architecture.

Nowadays, built heritage condition assessment is realized through on-site or photo-aided visual inspections, reporting pathologies manually on drawings, photographs, notes. The knowledge of the state of conservation goes through subjective and time or cost consuming procedures. This is even relevant for a historic building characterized by geometrical and morphological complexity and huge extension, or at risk of collapse. In this context, advancements in the field of Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence provide an opportunity to address these criticalities. The proposed methodology is based on a Mask R-CNN model, for the detection of decay morphologies on built heritages, and, particularly on historic buildings. The experimentation has been carried out and validated on a highly heterogeneous dataset of images of historic buildings, representative of the regional Architectural Heritage, such as: castles, monasteries, noble buildings, rural buildings. The outcomes highlighted the significance of this remote, non-invasive inspection technique, in support of the technicians in the preliminary knowledge of the building state of conservation, and, most of all, in the decay mapping of some particular classes of alterations (moist area, biological colonization).

Abstract (sommario):
Heritage tourist attractions are important in the diversification of tourism product offers for any competitive tourist destination. The current status of domestic heritage tourism in Kenya remains under-researched leaving many critical areas of interest requiring more research attention and redress. These needs also have to be examined in the Kenyan domestic heritage tourism context with a view to creating and satisfying higher demand for tourists. This research expands the widespread theory of planned behavior (TPB) by adding motivation and perceived safety and security as predictors of visit intention. In total, 802 respondents filled out the structured questionnaire, of which 693 questionnaires (86%) were found to be valid. The findings of this study validated the TPB with respect to heritage visitation in a domestic tourism context. It was further established that the expanded TPB model and its variables were applicable and more efficacious in directly predicting visit intention to historical heritage attractions. These results reveal the key determinants of the willingness of domestic tourists to visit historical heritage sites. Destination marketers and managers should endeavor to enhance the five psychographic aspects considered in the current study, in order to cultivate higher intentions towards visiting historical heritage sites among domestic tourists.

Abstract (sommario):
Understanding how historical events influenced current events is made feasible through learning about the past. Heritage Masjid is essential for preserving history and establishing a sense of roots in society. It is crucial for future usage of cultural diversity, education, tourism, and sustainable development. As cities expand, the Negeri Sembilan Heritage masjid's disappearance highlights the need to safeguard cultural heritage by considering history, social culture, and architectural influences. This study provides suggestions to assist future architects and conservators in managing heritage masjid conservation initiatives. Additionally, it helps non-specialists and traditional carpenters restore historic buildings while supporting authority oversight. The research also encourages tourism by highlighting national treasures and fostering a sense of community among the "adat perpatih" community in Negeri Sembilan. The study aimed to explore the Negeri Sembilan Heritage Masjid's architectural evolution while contributing to sustainable development. The aim can be achieved with several objectives: to identify the existing condition of the selected heritage Masjid, to determine the original and extension of the layout design, and to investigate the evolved architectural evolution. The study will involve on-site observation and interviews with the local communities and authorities. This study examined three buildings representing the architectural evolution of heritage masjids over a century old, particularly in Negeri Sembilan. Data was collected as artifact-based evidence gathered on-site, strengthened with academic research and documentation, and the results were contextualized and corroborated with the evolved layout design. Initial findings have shown that heritage masjid evolution and transformation exhibit the characteristics and different concepts of extension and highlight the existing historical approaches. Finally, critical issues in the studies of heritage masjid evolution in Negeri Sembilan will be foregrounded in the hope that it will shift the focus toward sustainable cities and communities.

Abstract (sommario):
The article raises some topical issues of preservation and regeneration of the historical environment of residential complexes of the avant-garde modernism period in Ukraine, in particular the deplorable condition of multi-story apartment buildings of the 1920s and 1930s. The reasons for the disfigurement of their authentic appearance by residents (extensions, glazing of balconies, partial "insulation" of facades, etc.) are revealed. Even houses that are included in the register of immovable monuments and have protective signs are undergoing significant transformations. Two essential aspects of the problem: legislative and value ones are highlighted by the author of the article. An analysis of the relevant articles of the Laws and State Building Norms of Ukraine showed that unauthorized actions to change the appearance of a house by the owners of individual apartments and premises are formally illegal, since the facades, adjacent territory, non-residential premises are the common property of all residents. But in fact, the residents are not united legally, have no interest in preserving the authenticity of the historic building. As the experience of advanced European countries, such as Germany, where the 1998 privatization of apartments was carried out, shows, residents' associations and other public organizations play an essential role in preserving the historical residential buildings of the modernist period. The experience of advanced European countries is of interest. In Germany, for example, as in Ukraine, apartments were privatized in 1998. It complicated the task of preserving historic residential buildings. However, society was already prepared to realize the value of the modernist heritage. It is considered prestigious to live in houses of this period. Inhabitants form associations whose purpose, along with the management of the joint property, is also to preserve the authenticity of the building. Great support and assistance to public initiatives is rendered by ICOMOS Germany. Awareness of the value of the house by its residents and owners is an important condition for the preservation of the historical environment and Ukrainian cities today. This was taken into account by the organizers of the workshop with the participation of German and Ukrainian students-architects, which was held in autumn 2017 in Zaporizhzha. An integral part of their project was a detailed plan to involve the residents of the quarter, erected in the late 1920s and early 1930s, in the process of its revitalization.

Abstract (sommario):
With the development and utilization of resources, mineral-resource cities face the dilemma of resource depletion, the environmental restoration of mines, and industrial transformation. Reusing their mining heritage is a good way for these cities to change their mono-industrial structure and vigorously develop successor industries. Due to the complexity of reusing mining heritage, introducing the “Public–Private-Partnership” (PPP) mode can be a good solution to the problems of the government’s mining heritage reuse, such as large capital investment and a long construction-cycle time. To accurately classify the risk of reuse of mining heritage in the PPP mode, 26 indicators are selected to construct the evaluation index system of mining heritage reuse in the PPP mode based on five aspects: social capital-side, contractor-side, government-side, civilian-side, and the natural environment. The path coefficients of the structural equation model are used to calculate the weights of the indicators. The improved matter–element extension model is constructed to evaluate the reuse of mining heritage in the PPP mode. The Jiaozuo-Centennial Mining Heritage Park project is the object of research for applying the model. The results show that the risk evaluation index system combines the risk factors from the stakeholders’ perspective. The risk-evaluation model of the mining heritage reuse PPP project is constructed based on the combination of the improved matter–element extension model, the calculation of the asymmetric closeness, and the structural equation modeling method, which solves the drawbacks of the traditional model, such as the difficulty of determining the weights of the indicators, the incomplete scope of the material element domains, and the poor calculation of the comprehensive correlation degree. The case analysis shows that the risk level of the Jiaozuo-Centennial Mining Heritage Park project is Level II. This aligns with the actual situation and verifies the feasibility of the risk-evaluation model applied to the actual project. The research in this paper fills the gap in the risk model of mining heritage reuse in the PPP mode, enriches the theoretical system of risk evaluation of mining heritage reuse projects, and provides reference significance for similar mining heritage development projects in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper concerns the definition of a novel ontology for cultural heritage based on the concept of digital twin. The ontology, called Heritage Digital Twin ontology, is a compatible extension of the well-known CIDOC CRM ISO standard for cultural heritage documentation and incorporates all the different documentation systems presently in use for cultural heritage documentation. In the authors’ view, it supports documentation interoperability at a higher level than the ones currently in use and enables effective cooperation among different users.

Abstract (sommario):
<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The need to share information about architectural heritage effectively after a disaster event, in order to foster its preservation, requires the use of a common language between the involved actors and stakeholders. A database able to connect the architectural heritage representation with the data useful for hazard and risk analysis can thus be a powerful instrument. This paper outlines a methodology to represent 3D models of the architectural heritage, according to some existing standards data models, and relate their geometric features to the damage mechanisms that could occur after an earthquake. Among all the existing standard to represent cartographic, cultural heritage and hazard/risk information, respectively INSPIRE, CityGML, UNESCO, CIDOC-CRM, its extension MONDIS and the Getty Institute vocabularies, compliant to the CIDOC-CRM, have been taken into account. An INSPIRE extension has been proposed for increasing the level of detail (LoD) of the representation and improving the description of heritage buildings, adding some macro-elements and elements “feature types” connected with the damage mechanisms, identified in structural studies. The suggested method allows to archive, in a multi-scale database, 3D information with a very high level of detail about architectural heritage and can help structural engineers and conservator-restorers in preventing further damages through individuating useful targeted actions.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
This research deals with the issue of the recovery of the historic urban fabric with a view towards ecological transition, nowadays considered the preferable direction of sustainability for the reform of the house–city–landscape system. The massive incentives provided by the Italian government for sustainable building, in view of the post-pandemic economic recovery, risk being reduced to mere support for the real estate sector, which turns the financial transfer from the public into an increase in asset value for the private sector. Such an incentive system could contradict the original function of the city, which is to be the privileged place for social communication and the creation of the identity of settled communities. A process of property development that disregards the distribution of income favors the most valuable property, thus increasing the socioeconomic distance between centrality and marginality. The latter is a condition that often characterizes the parts of the historic city affected by extensive phenomena of physical and functional obsolescence of the built heritage, and it is less capable of attracting public funding. The increase of building decay and social filtering-down accelerates the loss and involution of neighborhood identities; the latter constitutes the psycho-social energy that helps preserve the physical, functional and anthropological integrity of the city, due to the differences that make its parts recognizable. This study, with reference to a neighborhood in the historic city of Syracuse (Italy), proposes a model of analysis, evaluation and planning of interventions on the buildings’ roofs, aimed at defining the best strategy for ecological–environmental regeneration. The model presented allows one to generate a multiplicity of alternative strategies that combine different uses of roofs: from the most sustainable green roofs, but that are less cost-effective from the identity and landscape point of view; to the most efficient photovoltaic roofs from the energy–environmental point of view; and up to the most cost-effective ones, the vertical extensions with an increase in building volume. The proposed tool is an inter-scalar multidimensional valuation model that connects the multiple eco-socio-systemic attitudes of individual buildings to the landscape, identity, energy–environmental and economic overall dimensions of the urban fabric and allows one to define and compare multiple alternative recovery hypotheses, evaluating their potential impacts on the built environment. The model allows the formation of 100 different strategies, which are internally coherent and differently satisfy the above four perspectives, and it provides the preferable ones for each of the five approaches practiced. The best strategy characterizes most green roofs, 427 out of 1075 building units, 277 blue roofs, 121 green–blue roofs and 46 grey roofs.

Abstract (sommario):
The Romantic vision of ancient architecture, together with the evaluation of the said architecture as historical legacy, have contributed to the extensive path followed by the discipline of architectural restoration towards its consolidation as a scientific method along the 19th and the 20th century. During the Renaissance, when attention was turned to Classic Architecture, the study of the construction methods became the first germ for recognising the value of ancient architecture, in its many styles, as historical heritage. The scientific analysis that then took place in the 19th century, framed in the philosophical trend of Positivism, was also be reflected in architectural restoration: an appropriate intervention had to begin with learning about of the history of the construction. This can easily be understood considering that the term restoration includes many medieval constructions being completed or reconstructed introducing large additions or extensions, which were done taking as reference the use of traditional construction materials with their corresponding traditional technology and the study of agreements and manuscripts. These documents were unveiled by research, in parallel to the development of the formulation of a theoretical structural model, bearing in mind that, initially, masonry, timber and cast iron were the main construction materials, and their properties dictated the nature of structural forms (Charlton 1982). The debate about architectural restoration begun in the 19th century has gone on to history mainly thanks to names like Viollet-le-Duc, Ruskin, Morris or Pugin. However, behind these names, a series of prominent figures can be recognized. The group was comprised of individuals of all filiations who were developing and bringing together the theory and the scientific practice originated in the twilights of the 18th century in the newly established French Republic. The innumerable positions, schools, trends and declarations that have developed since then, have today a point in common: the valuation and the respect for ancient architectural monuments, a living testimony for learning about the societies who constructed them. The present work focuses on the figure of the Englishman George Edmund Street (1824-81), whose work is not as well known as that of some of his contemporaries named above, but is not less important for that reason. Street contributed to the restoration of many architectural monuments; his experience allowed him to device certain approaches to this discipline that yielded numerous restoration interventions, both inside and outside England. His work has not received as much attention as that of Butterfield, and his name is certainly not as well known as Scott's. Yet he has hardly been altogether forgotten (Hitchcock 1960).

Abstract (sommario):
The nature-culture dichotomy inherent in the World Heritage Convention seemed to be overcome but incomplete when cultural landscapes were introduced as a new type of World Heritage in 1992. In recent years, IUCN and ICCROM, the World Heritage advisory bodies, are actively promoting an integrated nature-culture management approach through ‘Connecting Practice’, ‘Nature-Culture Journey’, World Heritage Capacity Building Program, and ‘Panorama Solution’. The integrated nature-culture management approach encompasses the wider environment, culture and local community surrounding the heritage site, which is equivalent to a place-centered approach. The extension of the world heritage, Røros Mining Town and the Circumference, not only contributes to recognizing and preserving the entanglement and coexistence of nature and culture, but also provides an opportunity to recognize another humanity, Sámi and their sustainable way of managing nature in the Antropocene era.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper concerns the extension of the Heritage Digital Twin Ontology introduced in previous research to describe the reactivity of digital twins used for cultural heritage documentation by including the semantic description of sensors and activators and all of the process of interacting with the real world. After analysing previous work on the use of digital twins in cultural heritage, a summary description of the Heritage Digital Twin Ontology is provided, and the existing applications of digital twins to cultural heritage are overviewed, with references to reviews summarising the large production of scientific contributions on the topic. Then, a novel ontology named the Reactive Digital Twin Ontology is described, in which sensors, activators, and the decision processes are also semantically described, turning the previous synchronic approach to cultural heritage documentation into a diachronic one. Some case studies exemplify this theory.
