Abstract (sommario):
Astral magic, the capturing of celestial spirits or rays in engraved stones at astronomically propitious times, enters the West with Adelard of Bath’s 12th century translation of Thabit ibn Qurra’s treatise on talismanic magic, Liber Prestigiorum. Derived from Greek, Babylonian, Sabian, Egyptian and Neo-Platonic magical theory and practice, astral magic requires profound knowledge of astronomy. Talismans draw down planetary spirits along stellar rays, the vehicles of transmission, following sympathetic correspondences between astronomical and terrestrial phenomena. In the 12th century works Guillaume de Palerne and Le Chevalier au Lion, magic rings and werewolves are tied to astral magic. These works were written for the English court that supported Adelard, and Gervase of Tilbury’s Otia Imperialia where ‘in England we have often seen men change into wolves according to the phases of the moon’ and ‘there is no precious stone which may not be consecrated for the exercise of its extrinsic power with the herb of the same name or with the blood of the bird or animal, combined with spells’. Adelard’s version of Thabit’s text, along with the Latin Picatrix, also derived from Thabit, had the greatest impact on learned magic in the medieval and early modern periods

Abstract (sommario):
Deshari, Bejuni, Shamanins are known as indigenous physicians or Vaidyas among the Kandhas of south Orissa. The Deshari is well acquainted with the medical effect of the roots and herbs required for curing of the diseases using charms and spells. Bejunis are experts for the treatment of mental patients. Through magical spells and charms (known as white Magic), she takes up the cases of mental illness. The services of Shamanins are requires for harming an enemy by mantras and tantras. They are expert in Black Magic. Kandhs are experts or specialists in treatment of drowned, night goblin, labour pain and pain in mother’s breast and pulta-bagha. This particular magical property enabled them to transform themselves into tigers and in this shape to attack human beings and their cattle1 . John Campbell* , a top ranking ICS officer witnessed such cases of Pulta-bagha in his own eyes. Their magical properties are amazing and tremendous. But they had no written books on this magical property. It goes from mind to mind, mouth to mouth and generation to generation. The charms, spells, magic-lores, magic cords, folk method of treatment and folk medicines are the traditional heritage of these people. If we will not collect, document or preserve in digital form, this valuable wealth of the centuries will disappear from the society very soon. An humble attempt has been made in this paper to present a vivid account of the role of Desharis, Bejuni, Shamanins and their magical property for the treatment of the diseases.

Abstract (sommario):
It is the well-known fact that most of the plants species exist in nature possess medicinal properties. Sanjeevani booti is one among such plants species, which is known for its majestic effects from ancient time. Sanjeevani (a group of herbs) is the most elusive in Indian mythology whose existence and identity are still controversial. According to Hindu mythology, Sanjeevani booti has potential of reviving a person and returning him to consciousness. In Valmiki Ramayana, it is mentioned in Yudhakandprakaran that when Lakshman got injured and fell unconscious, the Royal physician Susena asked Hanuman to step Dronagiri hills and bring four plants i.e. Mritasanjeevani, for reviving a life, Vishalyakarani, for removing arrows, Sandhanakarani, for restoring damaged skin and Suvarnyakarani for restoring skin colour. Just after smelling the revitalizing medicinal herb, Lakshmana gained consciousness. This is a majestic herb which has capability of resurrecting life. Recent research claims Saussurea gossypiphora and Pleurospermum candollei as Mritasanjeevani. Several plants those have been considered as affirmable candidates for the sanjeevani plants are including Selaginella bryopteris, Dendrobium plicatile, Cressa cretica and Rhodiola rosea. Since ages, people have been talking about the magical effects of these plants. Truly, Sanjeevani are the herbs of great importance to the society as a whole, and these should be studied thoroughly.

Abstract (sommario):
Medicinal plants or medicinal herbs possess therapeutic properties or exert beneficial pharmacological effects on human. From time immemorial, people have been using various medicinal plants without even knowing their phytochemistry and pharmacological properties as a medicine for treating numerous ailments. As technology developed and upgraded, people used to screen out various phytoconstituents as well as evaluate their basic pharmacological properties. Tinospora cordifolia is a medicinal herb which is commonly known as Giloy belong to family menispermaceae. It can also be found in places like Africa, China, South-East Asia, Indo-Malaya region and Australia. Traditionally, people use this herb as prominent food materials due to their higher nutraceutical value and various healing properties. For phytochemical investigation, extraction of whole plant is preferable whereas most of the phytochemical are found to be present in leaves. Various potent phytochemicals are found in this herb such as tinosponone, tinocordiside, tinosporaside, cordifoliside, β-sitosterol, mekisterone A, etc. which are belong to class of alkaloids, sesquiterpenoids, glycosides, steroids, volatile oil, etc. Owing to the presence of these potent compounds, it exhibits wide range of large number of pharmacological activities such as antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anticancer activities, etc. In past two years, SARS-CoV-2 infections has taken life of millions of people across the globe and there were no any vaccine or proper antiviral medicine available to defend this deadly pandemic, hence people were mostly relying on herbal plant therapy. Giloy is one such magical herb which exhibit healing properties in SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. Moreover, in-silico studies have been carried out to determine the binding affinity as well as inhibiting potential of various phytoconstituents of giloy. In this review work, we compiled all the updated information about T. cordifolia as well as emphasizing more on SARS-CoV-2 inhibiting potential.

Sholto-Douglas, Alice. "“Brightly Colored Magic and Weird Worlds”: Sylvia Plath’s Creation of Personae Through Her Visual Poetics". Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31237.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation, I extend existing acknowledgments of the impact of Sylvia Plath’s visual arts training on her writing in order to argue that her painterly sensibilities are central to her character construction. Specifically, I contend that Plath draws upon a set of visual techniques, which I categorise as hallucinations, mental images, dreams, blurriness, and visual-to-verbal re-inscription. The ability to control subjective experience through the imagination, a philosophy Plath discusses in her journals, acts as a framework for her narratives, and visual techniques become, for Plath’s personae, a method of manipulating their experiences through a blurring of the divide between individual imagination and subjective reality. Plath’s visual techniques further function to represent her personae’s psychic interiority in ways that not only illustrate the limits to expression of the traditionally literary but also offer a means of overcoming these limits through an alternative system of meaning-making. Thus, her personae’s agency exists at the level of form, through self representation that is not stymied by the limitations of the written word, as well as at the level of narrative, through her personae’s control of experience. Moreover, because these visual techniques appear frequently in narratives that are preoccupied with a gendered power dynamic, I contend that we should understand Plath’s moments of resistance to textual tradition as enabling her personae’s escape from patriarchal limitations to freedom and selfexpression. While this recognition of the significance of Plath’s visual techniques should not necessarily constitute a panacea to the constraints of traditional language, it does offer a new way of reading Plath which acknowledges her painterly sensibilities as crucial to the way in which she gives her personae agency and writes back to her literary forefathers.

Rebarchik, Brittany May. "What a Dream Was Here: An Ontological Approach to Love and Magic in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2015. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/5637.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This paper takes Heidegger’s notion of world disclosure and uses it for extended thematic analyses of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. In contrast to the majority of Shakespeare critics who treat Shakespeare’s use of magic as an epistemological issue, I argue that the main action of the play develops through an inherent contradiction between the magical and non-magical ontological states of the characters and the love that results. Borrowing from German philosopher Martin Heidegger, I demonstrate magic’s role as a catalyst in giving certain kinds of love a “shift of existence.” I show that the characters come more fully into being, not because of what they know, but by means of how they love, thus answering the question of magic’s ultimate role in the play: what happens when the characters react to the idea that “the course of true love never did run smooth”? When looking at this play through Heidegger’s lens one can see that magic is the catalyst for discovering new planes of existence for the character’s to enter, each one of these planes based on love.

Developed as a dissertation of master in Religious Sciences, this theoretical research has as its theme the herbs in Umbanda, syncretic religious segment created in Brazil by adding elements of Catholicism and spiritism with African cults brought by black slaves. This dissertation is guided by the studies of anthropology, sociology and other related sciences, presenting works of scholars in this area, as Rudolf Otto, Mircea Eliade, Terrin and Gilbert Durand, witht heir theory about the imaginary. The first section provides general fundamentals on the sacred and the Umbanda, with its history and principles of their cults. The second focuses on herbs, known since ancient times for healing and ritual, used in colonial Brazil for African Americans and indigenous people for the same purposes. The third chapter presents a study of the mythology of Gilbert Durand, related to the theory of the imaginary, presenting day time and night-time regimes of the images toanalyze themy thic structure, composed of schemas, archetypes, symbols and myths; and in the final part discusses the mythological analysis of the myth of Ossaim, orisha of herb sin African religions.

Altai, Mohamed. "Tumour Targeting using Radiolabelled Affibody Molecules : Influence of Labelling Chemistry". Doctoral thesis, Uppsala universitet, Enheten för biomedicinsk strålningsvetenskap, 2014. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-229090.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Affibody molecules are promising candidates for targeted radionuclide-based imaging and therapy applications. Optimisation of targeting properties would permit the in vivo visualization of cancer-specific surface receptors with high contrast. In therapy, this may increase the ratio of radioactivity uptake between tumour and normal tissues.  This thesis work is based on 5 original research articles (papers I-V) and focuses on optimisation of targeting properties of anti-HER2 affibody molecules by optimising the labelling chemistry. Paper I and II report the comparative evaluation of the anti-HER2 ZHER2:2395 affibody molecule site specifically labelled with 111In (suitable for SPECT imaging) and 68Ga (suitable for PET imaging) using the thiol reactive derivatives of DOTA and NODAGA as chelators. The incorporation of different macrocyclic chelators and labelling with different radionuclides modified the biodistribution properties of affibody molecules. This indicates that the labelling strategy may have a profound effect on the targeting properties of radiotracers and must be carefully optimized. Paper III reports the study of the mechanism of renal reabsorption of anti-HER2 ZHER2:2395 affibody molecule. An unknown receptor (not HER2) is suspected to be responsible for the high reabsorption of ZHER2:2395 molecules in the kidneys. Paper IV reports the optimization and development of in vivo targeting properties of 188Re-labelled anti-HER2 affibody molecules. By using an array of peptide based chelators, it was found that substitution of one amino acid by another or changing its position can have a dramatic effect on the biodistribution properties of 188Re-labelled affibody molecules. This permitted the selection of –GGGC chelator whichdemonstrated the lowest retention of radioactivity in kidneys compared to other variants and showed excellent tumour targeting properties. Paper V reports the preclinical evaluation of 188Re-ZHER2:V2 as a potential candidate for targeted radionuclide therapy of HER2-expressing tumours. In vivo experiments in mice along with dosimetry assessment in both murine and human models revealed that future human radiotherapy studies using 188Re-ZHER2:V2 may be feasible. It would be reasonable to believe that the results of optimisation of anti-HER2 affibody molecules summarized in this thesis can be of importance for the development of other scaffold protein-based targeting agents.

Grandma and her Ghosts (1989) directed by Wang Xiao Dee is the first animation film in Taiwan. The story is inspired by the interaction between the mother of the scriptwriter, Huang Li-Ming and Huang’s nephew. Wang further dramatizes the story with Ghost Month ceremonies and the ghosts. As a result, the protagonist Dou-Dou has reconciled with his grandma and grown up as a brave, sympathetic and caring boy under grandma’s magical guidance. In this respect, the film is regarded as a coming-of-age story. This thesis will investigate this film from the following directions: How does Director Wang represent the coexistence of various forms of life through the style of magic realism? How does Grandma guide Dou-Dou to love the land and the people through her magical practices and virtuous behaviors in daily life? How does Grandma perform the double role as of Grandma and the Taoist shaman in Ghost Month to expand Dou-Dou’s perspective of the world? How do the liminal entities bridge different worlds across the boundary between life and death, transforming Grandma and Dou-Dou into supernatural beings? In addition, Magical Grandma’s magic guides the spectators to review the custom of the Ghost Month in Taiwan and to rethink the communication between the living and the deceased. Although Grandma and her Ghosts has not won Golden Horse Awards then, the sense of nostalgia towards Taiwanese indigenous culture and generation issues in this film make it a landmark in Taiwan’s animation film. It has exerted its influence that it has been regularly broadcasted in the Ghost Month almost every year since its release.

Kuck, Joha-Mari. ""Until the crows came to collection their souls": re-vissioning the fantacy hero in selected fiction by Steven Erikson". Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/6080.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In the course of this dissertation, I will interrogate traditional representations of the heroic figure within the fantasy genre. I will argue that the tropes established by some of the most renowned fantasy texts are undergoing a process of evolution and that Steven Erikson (who is the special focus of my discussion) seeks to revision the heroic mould through his construction of Coltaine of the Crow Clan in Deadhouse Gates (2001). Deadhouse Gates centres on Coltaine, who is tasked with escorting tens of thousands of refugees across four hundred leagues of hostile territory. This re-evaluation of fantasy modes has significant ramifications for the future development of the genre as a whole. In order to explore how Erikson interrogates heroic representation, I briefly establish some of the distinctive characteristics of fantasy. I then explore how some major fantasy texts represent heroism, before investigating Erikson’s particular response to these traditions.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores how a group of 17 male youth athletes, and their families, experience competitive hockey. Many of the youths seem to forge fantasy relationships with hockey celebrities, heroes, and stars -- e.g. Sidney Crosby -- emulating them with regard to the "best" attitudes, equipment, and styles of play to have or use. Their parents invest considerable amounts of money and time into their sons' participation in hockey, not because they necessarily share their sons' dreams of athletic stardom, but because they hope that it will help instill community-defined "positive" values into their sons--tools needed to become "successful" youths and, eventually, adults.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract When Empedocles’ biographers presented him as always going around wearing sandals of bronze, they were generalizing falsely from some much more specific data. As so often, they were falling in with the tendency among Greek writers to rationalize and so misinterpret the details of magic, ritual, and myth. Again, when they turned the detail about the discovery of the single bronze sandal-symbol of Hecate, magical sign of the ability to descend to the underworld-into a proof that Empedocles was a fraud they either did not understand the ritual symbolism or, for the sake of their parody, deliberately chose to ignore it.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The relationship between magic and religion has long been a problem widely discussed among historians of religion. Opinions ranged from the one extreme position that magic is different from and in strict opposition to religion if not its most dangerous opponent to the other where the term magic is denounced as a semantic trap and altogether expelled from scientific vocabulary. Rather than revive this debate here, I propose to survey some prayers contained in the collection of the Papyri Graecae Magicae and ask in what respect, if at all, they are different from prayers in contexts traditionally regarded as non-magical. I shall also ask whether, such differences as can be detected confirm the most widespread theory about the difference between magic and religion (at least among classicists), the one made famous by Sir James Frazer, namely, that the magician constrains, coerces, and forces the divinity to do his will, whereas religious man meekly submits himself to God’s overpowering will. (The slight denigration of religion is Sir James’s.) Among anthropologists, this Frazerian dichotomy is long dead and buried. In classical scholarship however, it loomed very large and still is among us, explicitly or, more often nowadays, implicitly. I choose prayer as the focus of interest because it was, and still is, regarded as the quintessence of religion. Its occurrence in a magical context is liable to pose some problems to those who support the traditional dichotomy.

Abstract (sommario):
The process of locating and evaluating historical data sources is presented here as a prelude to the analysis of the detailed magical references abstracted from historic archives. The sources are divided into primary and secondary general historical sources including letters, diaries, magical treatises and compilations, sermons, magical symbolism, and herbal collections and the documentary evidence from the Salem witch trials and other court proceedings. These sources provide the first glimpse into concerns over threshold permeability and the use of gender related magic as a crisis response to protect those domestic boundaries.

Abstract (sommario):
The process of locating and evaluating folkloristic data sources is presented here as a prelude to the analysis of the detailed magical references abstracted from those sources. The sources include multiple folklore collections gathered in Britain and New England. These sources provide at times a repetition of information from the historic sources, like the rationale of the Doctrine of Signatures, and in other instances references to beliefs, objects, and practices not noted in any historic documents including ideas about magical plants and some supernatural beings. These examples provide an additional layer of information into who was using magic during this period, why they used it, and how it manifested, specifically the use of gender related magic as a crisis response to a host of perceived dangers.

Abstract (sommario):
The heritage of Yogyakarta and other urban centres throughout Java, Indonesia, is such that their religions have become highly syncretic (Geertz). Here, animism, Hindu roots, and Islam, have been mixed to fashion modern spiritual practices. One of these is the Japa Mantra, a type of prayer used as a spell as white (and sometimes black) magic. The practitioners of the Japa mantra employ Javanese poetics to shape its poetics, in the belief that these mantras are magical and convey the will of deities and other spirits, who empathie with people and whose will allows these spiritual requests to amterialize. This paper presents an early stage in describing the symbolisms and poetics of the Japa Mantra, through the documenting of several hundred practitioners, priests, and others, in Yogyakarta and other urban centres. The analaysis of the poetics of the Japa Mantra practiced by these communities draws on symbolic anthropology, and describes junctures between spiritual speech communities and symbolic representations of a modern Java guided by a sustained heritage, in the face of an institutionalized Islam.

Abstract (sommario):
Harry Potter is a blockbuster. Reading the books from the series, one can find challenges and problems every adolescent confronts with. Harry faces real-world challenges, such as: racism, status in society, corruption. Reading about Harry Potter’s experiences, the choices he faces and the dilemmas he has empowers the reader (the learner) to find a way through his/her own choices and dilemmas. Education through active citizenship means empowering the learners to take part actively in society and to think critically about certain issues in society. Harry Potter books are a good resource for educators in attaining active citizenship skills.

Goodarzi, Avesta, Amir Soltani e Ebrahim Esmailzadeh. "Active Variable Wheelbase as an Innovative Approach in Vehicle Dynamic Control". In ASME 2011 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences and Computers and Information in Engineering Conference. ASMEDC, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/detc2011-48036.

Abstract (sommario):
Active variable wheelbase (AVW) has been introduced here as an innovative vehicle dynamic control method in which, the position of the front or rear axle relative to the vehicle C.G. can be actively varied. An attempt has been made to show the potential capabilities of this method in improving the road handling and stability of vehicles regardless of its embedded technical difficulties. For this purpose the proposed method has been conceptually studied in the first step and has been shown that one can generate the stabilizing yaw moment by changing the distance of the vehicle C.G. from the front or rear axles. Then the proposed concept has been theoretically studied using a simple vehicle dynamic model incorporated with the Magic Formula tire model. A comprehensive nonlinear 8 DOF vehicle model and a ‘model following control strategy’ have been used to evaluate the performance of AVW systems. The vehicle dynamic behavior when it is either uncontrolled or equipped with an AVW system has been simulated. Simulation results show that AVW can be considered as an innovative method for vehicle dynamic control in future.

Rocha, Allan, Usman Alim e Mario Costa Sousa. "Visualization of Multivariate Data on Surfaces". In Conference on Graphics, Patterns and Images. Sociedade Brasileira de Computação, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5753/sibgrapi.est.2020.12995.

Abstract (sommario):
This research builds upon ideas introduced and discussed many years ago that focus on the problem of visualizing multiple attributes on surfaces in a single view. Here we present a new perspective to this problem as well as a solution that allows us to design, visualize and interact with multivariate data on surfaces. Building upon multidisciplinary aspects, we present a new way to visualize multivariate data on surfaces by exploiting the concept of layering. First, we introduce a new real-time rendering technique and the concept of Decal-Maps, which fills a gap in the literature and allow us to create 2D visual representations such as glyphs that follow the surface geometry. Building on this technique, we propose the layering framework to facilitate the multivariate visualization design on surfaces. The use of this concept and framework allows us to connect and generalize concepts established in flat space, such as 2D maps, to arbitrary surfaces. Decal-maps opens up other new possibilities such as the use of interaction techniques. Here we demonstrate this potential by introducing a new interaction technique that allows us to explore multivariate data and to create customized focus+context visualizations on surfaces. This is achieved by introducing a new category of lenses, Decal-Lenses, which extends the concept of magic-lenses from flat space to general surfaces. Finally, this thesis showcases the process of multivariate visual design and data exploration through a series of examples from several domains such as Medicine and Geology.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of sleep is to help children grow and develop, which is why many parents try to lull their children to sleep. The present paper investigates what types of feelings, desires, blessings and expectations from a childare contained in lullabies sung by different nations, as well as what perspectives on sleep and lulling a child to sleep there are. The corpus consists of 120 lullabies published in Milutin Đuričković‟s book “Zvezdice sna: uspavanke naroda sveta” (2021). The content analysis technique and descriptive method are used in analyzing the corpus. The obtained results show that the blessings and desires in the lullabies are concerned with the child‟s health, happiness and long life. They are related to dreams that come to life, which provides evidence for lullabies having a magic function. The expectations from a child show that the child was raised to fulfill the expectations of his/her family and the community. The analysis of the perspectives on sleep and lulling a child to sleep shows that emphasis is placed on the quality of sleep, the things that help the child go to sleep and the role of family, primarily that of mother, in creating optimum conditions for going to sleep and removing sleep distractions. The analyzed lullabies also contain a model of raising a child – encouraging the desired behavior (sleeping) by rewarding a child or punishing a child for misbehavior by frightening him/her as a means of reactive discipline. The analysis shows that the lullabies belonging to different nations have many elements in common. The fact that the lullabies used to have other functions besides the basic one suggests the need for further research.

Abstract (sommario):
The Turtle dove (Javanese: perkutut) is one of most popular pets of the Javanese people. Here, they aim to have high quality turtle doves, either in the way that it chirps or in the luck that it may bring. The selection process is quite complex and extensive, one method of which is to carefully observe the physical characteristics of the bird. Accordingly, the community of turtle dove fans and experts has become enriched with a variety of turtle dove registers (words, phrases, idioms, etc.), many of which are metaphorical. This paper intends to study the metaphorical expressions used by the Javanese to compare the body characteristics of turtle doves with various natural and mythical realities surrounding the doves. The study will focus on how Javanese people associate the shapes of turtle dove body parts (the target domain) and natural objects used as a comparison (the source domain) for yielding metaphorical names of the turtle dove, either for obtaining a high quality sound or magical powers that the animal can bring to its owner.

Worden, Matt, Hongbo Wang, Anant Paravastu e William S. Oates. "NMR Characteristics of Photomechanics and Thermomechanics of Azobenzene Polymer Networks". In ASME 2012 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/smasis2012-8076.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Azobenzene polymer networks have drawn interests in the area of adaptive materials and structures due to their novel photo-responsive material coupling. These materials undergo a complex light driven molecular conformation change of the azobenzene chromophore when the material is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) or blue-green light. This photoisomerization process is characterized by a molecular conformation change from a rod shaped molecule to a strongly kinked molecule, also known as trans-cis photoisomerization under UV light exposure. Exposure to blue-green light can lead to a trans-cis-trans photoisomerization or a relaxation from the kinked cis state back to the trans rod state. The latter process is of strong interests for adaptive structure applications because the relaxation back to the trans state can be controlled by the orientation of polarized light. When these azobenzene molecules undergo this process in a polymer network, bending and twisting deformation can be controlled by the polarization orientation of the blue-green light. To better understand the distribution of the molecular conformation changes that influences macroscopic polymer deformation, we have conducted solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (ss-NMR) tests on fluorine doped azobenzene polymer networks. Here, we illustrate measurable chemical shifts due to blue light exposure near the 450 nm wavelength using a static ss-NMR probe. The results are compared to ss-NMR at different temperatures using Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR to understand any potential influences of heat relative to photoisomerization.

Abstract (sommario):
In the Hohlenstein-Stadel Cave in 1939 excavators uncovered nearly 200 mammoth ivory fragments, which were refitted as a therianthrope figurine with the head and torso of a cave lion but with the legs of a human being. It was thus named the Lion Man. During recent excavations in the Stadel Cave between 2008 and 2013, a stratigraphic sequence was discovered that extended from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Aurignacian. It became clear that the location of the Lion Man during the excavations of 1939 corresponded to layer Au of the recent 2008-2013 excavations part of the excavation back dirt from 1939 was also uncovered. Here, 575 fragments of mammoth ivory were found that partially belonged to the Lion Man figurine that was carved from a complete tusk. In 2012/2013 the Lion Man was therefore newly restored. The figure was completed to the greatest possible extent. It became apparent that the Lion Man represents a male. We also obtained new perpectives on the position and the sinistral ornamentation of the figurine. The snout, the back and the right side were refitted and the Lion Man also gained volume due to the refitted pieces. New insight underlines the intentional deposition of the formerly complete figurine during the Aurignacian. Wehrberger, K. (Ed.) (2013). The Return of the Lion Man. History Myth Magic.
