We conducted soil moisture manipulation experiments in a red pine (Pinusresinosa Ait.) plantation at the Harvard Forest (Petersham, Mass.) in August 1992 and May 1993. To manipulate soil moisture, we added 10 cm of groundwater to 1-m2 plots and allowed the soils to dry down to their pretreatment moisture contents. We measured methane (CH4) flux, soil moisture, and temperature prior to and after the water addition. Soils in both the control and watered plots were usually sinks for atmospheric CH4. Average consumption rates by control soils ranged from 0.12 to 0.17 mg CH4-C•m−2•h−1. Methane consumption rates by watered soils ranged from 0 to 0.12 mg CH4-C•m−2•h−1 and were inversely related to the moisture content of the upper 10 cm of mineral soil. Linear regression between soil moisture and CH4 consumption explained 78% of the variability (CH4 consumption = 0.001 75 (percent water filled pore space)–0.1957). Using this empirical relationship, we predicted CH4 consumption by soils at three other locations in the Harvard Forest, which agreed closely (r2 = 0.7574) with rates measured in the spring, summer, and fall of 1988–1992. Results from our study suggest that soil moisture is a good predictor of methane uptake by these forest soils and may be used to predict how future changes in soil moisture resulting from alterations in regional precipitation patterns will affect the strength of this terrestrial CH4 sink.

Strong positive correlations between the maximum rate of canopy photosynthesis, canopy-averaged foliar nitrogen concentration, and canopy albedo have been shown in previous studies. While leaf-level relationships between photosynthetic capacity and foliar nitrogen are well documented, it is not clear whether leaf-level relationships between solar-weighted reflectance and nitrogen underlie the canopy-scale patterns. Using an integrating sphere, we measured the reflectance and transmittance (350–2500 nm) of both individual leaves and multileaf stacks. Samples were collected from 12 broadleaf species at the Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts, USA. Across all species, foliar nitrogen (both mass-based nitrogen concentration and area-based nitrogen content) and leaf mass / area ratio were negatively, rather than positively, correlated with solar-weighted reflectance and transmittance in ultraviolet–visible and near-infrared wavelength bands (350–700 nm and 700–2500 nm, respectively). Leaf-level anatomy and biochemistry, therefore, do not appear to drive the canopy-level association between increasing foliar nitrogen content and increasing canopy albedo. This suggests that interactions between leaf optical properties and structural canopy-scale traits that correlate with nitrogen content (perhaps some combination of crown shape, leaf area index, leaf angular distribution, or other structural characteristics of the canopy), may instead underlie the previously observed relationship between nitrogen and canopy-level shortwave albedo.

Abstract A better understanding of forest subcanopy flows is needed to evaluate their role in the horizontal movement of scalars, particularly in complex terrain. This paper describes detailed measurements of the canopy structure and its variability in both the horizontal and vertical directions at a deciduous forest in complex terrain (the Harvard Forest, Petersham, Massachusetts). The effects of the trunks and subcanopy shrubs on the flow field at each of six subcanopy array locations are quantified. The dynamics of the subcanopy flow are examined with pragmatic methods that can be implemented on a small scale with limited resources to estimate the stress divergence, buoyancy, and pressure gradient forces that drive the flow. The subcanopy flow at the Harvard Forest was driven by mechanisms other than vertical stress divergence 75% of the time. Nocturnal flows were driven predominantly by the negative buoyancy of a relatively cool layer near the forest floor. The direction of the resulting drainage flows followed the azimuth of the longest forest-floor slope. Similar results were found at a much flatter site at Borden, Ontario, Canada. There was no clear evidence of flow reversals in the subcanopy in the lee of ridges or hills at the Harvard Forest even in high wind conditions, contrary to some model predictions.

An estimate was made of the abundance of different types of mycorrhizal associations in two plant communities of conifers and hardwoods in the Harvard Forest. Lists of plant species, the coverage of their foliage in the canopy and understorey layers, and the types of mycorrhizal associations for 45 species common in these communities are presented. Of the species examined, 91 % were mycorrhizal, representing most of the known major types, viz. ectomycorrhiza, vesicular–arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM), ericoid, and monotropoid mycorrhiza. Of the 45 species studied, 22% of the species showed ectomycorrhizal, and 71 % VAM associations. A direct spore count was a more reliable method than the most probable number method for determining VAM occurrence in the soil. Spore numbers ranged from 4.4 to 11.8 spores/g oven-dried soil. In conifer stands, ectomycorrhizae were most common, although VAM were also observed in the conifer species. In hardwood stands, VAM were more frequent than in conifer stands, but mycorrhizae were heterogeneous and included a good proportion of the ericoid type. Ectomycorrhizae were more common in communities of low diversity; VAM occurred more frequently in communities of high plant species diversity.

Soil is Earth's largest terrestrial carbon pool (Oertel et al., 2016) and can act as a net source of greenhouse gases (GHG). However, if organic material accumulates in soils faster than it is converted to CO2 by cellular respiration, soil becomes a smaller GHG source and even has the potential to become a GHG sink. Not much is known about factors that drive soil to be a source or a sink of GHG. Soil temperature and moisture have both been shown to correlate with CH4 emissions and temperature has been shown to correlate with CO 2 emissions (Jacinthe et al., 2015). Currently these relationships are not well constrained, particularly in upland soils, which are soils found at elevations between 100 and 500 m (Carating et al., 2014). Soil from the Harvard Forest was collected and used in two in-lab flux experiments to constrain the effect that soil moisture has on i.) the rate of CH4 and CO2 production/consumption and ii.) the fraction of injected CH4 that is oxidized to CO2 by soil microbes. The first experiment involved injecting vials containing soil samples with CH4 , taking an initial measurement with a residual gas analyzer (RGA), incubating for three days, and taking final measurements using the RGA. The results of this experiment indicated that cellular respiration is an important carbon source in these soils, with more CO2 coming from cellular respiration than from the oxidation of CH4. The second experiment involved injecting vials containing soil samples with CH4 and 14CH4 as a tracer, incubating for six days, and analyzing CO2 from each sample using a scintillation counter. This experiment showed a weak trend indicating that increased soil moisture may result in decreased CH4 oxidation. Results showed that decays per minute from the samples were lower than in a control. These results indicated that not all CO 2 from each sample was successfully captured and analyzed using the methods here. So while the trend may hold true, it should be supported by reconducting the experiment using a more reliable means of CO2 capture. The unexpected results from both experiments indicated that there is still much to be learned about the reactions that occur in these soils and how to perfect laboratory methods to study them.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents the energy, water, and carbon budgets of Sitka spruce plantation forest in Scotland over the period 1997 to 2001. The site microclimate is observed to be strongly influenced by the site’s oceanic climate, and canopy development. Atmospheric structure is observed to affect temporal patterns of microclimatological variables while topography is observed to affect microclimatological and flux measurements. Eddy covariance flux measurement theory and methods are examined and specific inadequacies are addressed. Theoretical aspects of eddy covariance that were examined include signal despiking, coordinate rotation, low frequency contributions, as well as correlations for density fluctuations, angle of attack errors, and sonic temperature determination. An analysis of frequency response correction methods was used to determined if superior methods could be identified. Fluxes of momentum were used to verify existing measures of atmospheric turbulence and analysed to identify canopy structure and growth. Sensible heat fluxes were found to have an unexpected negative bias, only a portion of which can be attributed to instrument error. This bias is found to depend upon topography and wind speed but is apparently unrelated to katabatic flow. Large errors in latent heat flux were caused by enhanced tube attenuation and were corrected using improved frequency response corrections. Interannual variability of momentum and sensible heat flux were closely associated with wind speed variability, while interannual variability of NEE was attributable primarily to radiation. The source of variability of latent heat flux was not clearly identifiable. Missing values of latent heat flux were modelled using a canopy conductance model, which incorporated effects of canopy evaporation.

I present an analysis of techniques used to determine the mass power spectrum from observations of the intergalactic medium. Simple Monte Carlo simulations are presented which clarify some the problems which must be overcome when attempting any inversion process. The 1 dimensional flux power spectrum is dependent on both the clustering of the absorption features and on the scaling relations existing between the dark matter and baryon distributions. More realistic simulated spectra are used to illustrate differnces in the mean flux power spectrum for a range of cosmologies and the ratio of the 1 dimensional linear mass and flux power spectra. The mass distribution is much more dependent on cosmological parameters than the flux power spectrum, highlighting the very accurate measurements of the latter quantity required for an accurate recovery of the mass density power spectrum. These spectra are further analysed by deconvolution into Voigt profiles. This techniques is shown to be an excellent approximation, in spite of the current cosmic web paradigm of the Ly-α forest. However the power spectrum of the positions of these fitted lines is shown to be a very poor indicator of the underlying mass density field. Inferring the 3 dimensional forms of power spectra from 1 dimensional data is shown to be problematic. This, coupled with analysis of the covariance matrix of the flux power spectrum, casts doubts on the reliability of the error analysis presented in the literature.

Vegetation plays an important role in the partitioning, transport and fate of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) in the environment. This thesis aimed at addressing two key knowledge gaps in our understanding of how plants exchange HOCs with the atmosphere: (1) To improve our understanding of the uptake of HOCs into, and transfer through, leaves of different plant species which can significantly influence the transport and fate of HOCs in the environment; and (2) To evaluate an experimental approach to measure fluxes of HOCs in the field. The methods presented in papers I, II and III contribute to increasing our understanding of the fate and transport of HOCs in leaves by offering straightforward ways of measuring mass transfer coefficients through leaves and partition ratios of HOCs between leaves, leaf lipids and lipid standards and reference materials like water, air and olive oil. The passive dosing study in paper III in particular investigated the role of the composition of the organic matter extracted from leaves in determining the capacity of the leaves to hold chemicals and found no large differences between 7 different plant species, even though literature data on leaf/air partition ratios (Kleaf/air) varies over 1-3 orders of magnitude. In paper IV we demonstrated that the modified Bowen ratio method can be extended to measure fluxes of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) if the fluxes do not change direction over the course of the sampling period and are large enough to be measured. This approach thus makes it possible to measure fluxes of POPs that usually require sampling times of days to weeks to exceed method detection limits. The experimental methods described in this thesis have the potential to support improved parameterization of multimedia models, which can then be evaluated against fluxes measured in the field using the modified Bowen ratio approach.

AbstractBark beetles often feed on dead or dying plant tissues, serving as primary decomposers. However, some bark beetle species kill healthy trees, although at the time of attack, these healthy trees are often experiencing stressful conditions, such as drought or lightning strikes. Populations of tree-killing bark beetles can increase in size to a level where they can overcome the resistance of healthy trees and cause mass destruction of forests resulting in tremendous economic and ecological damage. This chapter introduces the reader to bark beetle natural history, diversity, evolution and management. Natural history is organized by feeding ecology, mating strategies, and intra– and interspecific interactions. Evolution and diversity of bark beetles includes discussion of phylogeny, timing of evolutionary events and an annotated and illustrated list of bark beetle genera important to forest entomologists. Management and control covers efforts to reduce losses to bark beetle destruction of forests and plant products. Finally, we present case studies, including outbreak events, which have resulted in vast economic and ecological loss.

Global greenhouse gas emissions, combined with local deforestation and forest degradation, are pushing the Amazonian system closer to a tipping point. A large-scale Amazon tipping point may trigger the collapse of most forests and consequently: (1) accelerate global warming, hindering efforts to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement; (2) reduce moisture flow across South America, threatening water security for basic socioeconomic activities, such as agriculture; (3) increase temperatures across the Amazon region that may become unbearable for humans living in urban and rural areas; (4) cause mass species extinctions; and (5) compromise the biological and cultural assets that represent key solutions to the current and future challenges of humanity. Synergies between disturbances may cause unexpected tipping behaviour, even in forest regions previously considered as resilient to climate change, such as the central or western Amazon.

Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-Descendant Peoples (IP, LC & ADP) — roughly 2.5 billion people — customarily manage over 50% of the global land mass, but governments currently recognize their legal ownership to just 10% (RRI, 2015). Fortunately, there has been progress in addressing this historic injustice in recent years as governments have begun to pass legislation and achieve court decisions to recognize the historic and customary use and ownership of these lands. A recent stock-taking finds that since 2002, at least 14 additional countries have passed legislation that require governments to recognize these rights. Similarly, there have been positive national and regional level court decisions in numerous countries supporting the formal recognition of the collective land and forest rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant Peoples. RRI research demonstrates that if only 7 countries implemented these new laws, policies, and court decisions, over 176 million hectares would be transferred from government to Indigenous, local community, and Afro-descendant ownership, benefitting over 200 million people (RRI, 2018). The focus of this report, and the Framework itself, is limited to formal recognition of land and forest rights (i.e. delimitation, mapping, registry, etc.). It does not assess the important and subsequent steps of strengthening community or territorial governance, the enforcement of these rights by governments, or the capacities necessary to enable Indigenous, local community, and Afro-descendant organizations to manage or exploit their resources or engage in enterprises or economic development activities – all of which are essential for sustained and self-determined conservation and development. This Framework focuses on the first step in this longer process.
