AbstractIn a previous paper, the potential automorphy of certain Galois representations to GLn for n even was established, following the work of Harris, Shepherd–Barron and Taylor and using the lifting theorems of Clozel, Harris and Taylor. In this paper, we extend those results to n=3 and n=5, and conditionally to all other odd n. The key additional tools necessary are results which give the automorphy or potential automorphy of symmetric powers of elliptic curves, most notably those of Gelbert, Jacquet, Kim, Shahidi and Harris.

Abstract The aim of this paper is (1) to briefly define the essence of integrationist semiology/linguistics (especially in Roy Harris’ works – e.g. Harris 1981, 1984, 1998a) and to present a set of basic methodological beliefs that can be considered as a principal critique of traditional (so called segregationist) linguistics / semiology. Among the most important integrationist beliefs are the non-privilege of linguistic acts in human communication (the principle of contemporality), contextualism (the sign form is not independent of the sign substance) and the inseparability of rules from their application. On this basis the paper (2) outlines the basic aspects of integrationist convictions about the relationship between the sign and the text and their comparison with Rastier’s (2015) interpretative semantics. In conclusion (3) the article discusses one current form of the philosophy of language (Pettersson, 2017) that is – to a certain extent – based on integrationism. Overall, the paper attempts to draw attention to the fact that integrationist theory in many cases provides an adequate critical reflection of traditional semiological/linguistic methodology, but in a closer look it shows that it cannot offer a robust theoretical alternative.

In a recent article, Harris (2003) concluded that the data do not support the existence of evolved sex differences in jealousy. Harris' review correctly identifies fatal flaws in three lines of evidence (spousal abuse, homicide, morbid jealousy), but her criticism of two other lines of evidence (self-report responses, psychophysiological measures) is based, in part, on a mischaracterization of the evolutionary psychological theory and a misunderstanding of the empirical implications of the theory. When interpreted according to the correct criterion (i.e., an interaction between sex and infidelity type), self-report studies (both forced-choice and non-forced choice) offer strong support for the existence of sex differences in jealousy. Psychophysiological data also offer some support, although these data are weakened by validity-related concerns. In addition, some refutational evidence cited by Harris (responses to real infidelity, responses under cognitive load) actually does not refute the theory. An integrative model that describes how jealousy might result from the interaction of sociocultural variables and evolved sex differences and suggestions for future research directions are discussed.

The purpose of this research is to examine how visual communication can be interpreted in different ways and even in opposition to the creator’s intention, and to understand how different visual signs in images convey meaning to explain audience’s oppositional reading. Through a qualitative methodological approach, a semiotic comparative analysis of two covers of the fashion magazine Vogue featuring Kamala Harris will be carried out, a digital cover and a print cover. Theoretically, the analysis is grounded in postcolonialism, representation, and Stuart Hall’s encoding and decoding model of communication. The results suggest that there are signs in the photograph on Vogue’s print cover that can be interpreted from a postcolonial perspective, and both oppositional and preferred readings are discussed.

It is a central claim of modern linguistic theory that linguists do not prescribe, but describe language as it is, without pronouncing on correctness or judging one variety better than another. This attempt to exclude evaluation is motivated by a desire to be ' politically correct', which hinders objective analysis of language, and by an ill-advised imitation of the natural sciences, which obstructs the discipline's progress towards becoming a science in its own right. It involves linguists, as users of a valued variety, in self-deception and disingenuousness, distances them from the concerns of the ordinary language user, and betrays a failure to understand the involvement of social values in language, the nature of language itself, and the limits of linguistic science. On a wider scale, linguistics reflects society's devaluing and mechanisation of language. Despite growing concern expressed in the literature, and the incoherence that becomes apparent when linguists attempt to address social problems using a theory that regards language as an autonomous object, newcomers to the discipline continue to be taught that anti-prescriptivism is the natural corollary of a scientific approach to language. This thesis suggests that the way out of these difficulties is to rethink the meaning of ' theory' in linguistics. If we take the reflexivity of language seriously, building on M.A.K. Halliday's notion of 'linguistics as metaphor', we are reminded that a linguistic theory is made of language. Metalanguage must use the experiential and interpersonal meaning-making resources of everyday language. It follows that a linguistic theory cannot escape being evaluative, because evaluation is an inherent part of interpersonal meaning. If we fail to notice our own metalinguistic evaluation, this is because language disguises its evaluative meanings, or perhaps we are just not used to thinking of them as part of the grammar. To achieve clarity about the involvement of value in language, we need to turn our metalanguage back on itself - 'using the grammar to think with about the grammar' . Some ways of doing this are demonstrated here, turning the resources of systemic functional linguistics on linguists' own language. The circularity of this process should be seen not as a drawback but as a salutary reminder that linguistics is an interpretive rather than a discovery process. This knowledge should help us revalue language and make a place for evaluation in linguistic theory, paving the way for a socially responsible and productive linguistics.

Dans le contexte des neurosciences mathématiques, le modèle Intègre et Tire jouit sans aucun doute d'une grande renommée et d'une vaste littérature. Cependant, sa structure mathématique particulière, avec des termes non locaux, des mécanismes de sauts ou de diffusion partielle, combinée à la coprésence possible de différentes échelles temporelles, rend l'étude de cette équation difficile et toujours ouvert. Le modèle classique consiste en une équation qui décrit la dynamique d'un réseau neuronal en fonction du potentiel de membrane des cellules. Un réseau peut être interconnecté par des liens excitateurs ou inhibiteurs, ou déconnecté, auquel cas l'équation sera linéaire. Nous nous intéressons au comportement asymptotique de ces réseaux dans le cas linéaire, où des outils mathématiques tels que les méthodes d'entropie et integrale et la théorie de Harris ont été utiles pour démontrer la convergence vers l'état stationnaire. Dans la première extension du modèle classique d'Intègre et Tire que nous proposons, nous remplaçons la condition de bord ponctuelle par un terme non local, en introduisant un paramètre aléatoire. Pour ce nouveau système, nous prouvons la convergence en temps long au moyen de la théorie de Harris et de l'entropie relative avec une inégalité de Poincaré indépendante du paramètre aléatoire. In the context of mathematical neuroscience, the Integrate and Fire model undoubtedly enjoys great fame and a vast literature. Yet, its peculiar mathematical structure, with non-local terms, jumps or partial diffusion mechanisms, combined with the possible co-presence of different time scales, make the study of this equation challenging and always open-ended. The classical model consists of an equation that describes the dynamics of a network of neurons based on the membrane potential of the cells. A network can be interconnected with excitatory or inhibitory linkages or disconnected, in which case the equation will be linear. Our interest is in the asymptotic behaviour of such networks in the linear case, wheremathematical tools such as the entropy and integral method and Harris theory have been useful in proving the convergence to the steady state. In the first extension of the classical Integrate and Fire model we propose, we replace the pointwise boundary condition with a non-local term, introducing a randomness parameter. For this new system, we prove long-time convergence via Harris theory and relative entropy with Poincaré inequality independent of the random parameter. Furthermore, we study the asymptotic convergence of the solutions of this model to those of the classical one. In the second extension, we dealwith the incorporation of a variable for the adaptation current. First, we study the dynamics of this last variable alone, analysing the regularity of the stationary solution in dependence on the parameters and the asymptotic behaviour by means of the different methods of relative entropy with compactness argument and integral method. We then investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the two-dimensional model through numerical simulations and we make comparison with a similar Fokker-Planck equation with partial diffusion and nonlinearity. A number of numerical simulations accompany the study of each analysed model, allowing its theoretical results to be supported or anticipated
Nel contesto delle neuroscienze matematiche, il modello di Integrate and Fire gode indubbiamente di grande fama e di una vasta letteratura. Eppure, la sua peculiare struttura matematica, con termini non-locali, meccanismi di salto o di diffusione parziale, unita all’eventuale compresenza di differenti scale temporali, rendono lo studio di questa equazione stimolante e sempre aperto. Il modello classico consiste in un’equazione che descrive la dinamica di una rete di neuroni in funzione del potenziale di membrana delle cellule. Una rete può essere interconnessa con legami eccitatori o inibitori o disconnessa, nel qual caso l’equazione sarà lineare. Noi siamo interessati al comportamento asintotico di tali reti nel caso lineare, dove strumenti matematici come l’entropia relativa, il metodo integrale e la teoria di Harris si sono rivelati utili per dimostrare la convergenza verso lo stato stazionario. Nella prima estensione del modello classico di Integrate and Fire che proponiamo, sostituiamo la condizione al bordo puntuale con un termine non locale, inserendo un parametro di casualità. Sara Payson Willis Eldredge Farrington Parton, more famously known as the elusive Fanny Fern, employs three autobiographical personae mediated by fiction in her debut novel, Ruth Hall: (1) Ruth Hall, the novel's protagonist; (2) Floy, the fictional Ruth's pseudonym; and (3) Fanny Fern, Parton's real-life pseudonym and the name under which Ruth Hall was published. Together these personae assert a fragmented presence that incorporates various voices and lives, allowing for exploration, growth, and interactivity.Philippe Lejeune's autobiographical contract outlines three specific guidelines for autobiography—that it be a narrative, that it explore personal history, and that it link author and protagonist. Ruth Hall participates in two-thirds of Lejeune's contract, though Parton's conscious fictionalization demands a revisiting of the autobiographical contract, revealing the impossibility of recording truth as well as the impracticality of a unitary self.Through her use of autobiographical personae in Ruth Hall and in her personal life, Parton succeeds in rewriting the narrative of domesticity for the nineteenth-century American woman. Her self-conceptualization embraces multiplicity as she demands to be seen as "more than."

Abstract (sommario):

This dissertation analyses the survival strategies that wealthy people in Mexico City have designed and implemented to protect themselves from kidnapping with special focus on household employment relationships. This particular crime has demonstrated a particular evolution in the last 20 years that deserves analysis. Once a political crime, it became an economic crime that at first only targeted wealthy individuals and then over time began targeting working class victims. Based on extensive qualitative fieldwork in Mexico City which included a year in the field, 78 interviews with employers, employees, kidnapping victims and members of the police forces and justice system and the creation of a news reports database this thesis presents a detailed history of the evolution of kidnapping in the period 1968-2009. This is followed by an in depth analysis of the strategies elites use to protect themselves from this crime. Special attention is focused on the hiring process of household employees, namely drivers, as evidence suggests that most kidnappings are organized or facilitated in some way by a close collaborator of the victim. The hiring process is approached as a problem of trust. Signaling theory is the main framework used for the solving of this problem, as well as some ideas found in transaction cost economics, namely vertical integration. The results point towards strategic behavior from the actors involved that seeks to minimize the risk of being kidnapped for the employer. Signaling helps us uncover the specific mechanisms by which employer establish their prospective employees’ trustworthiness. The use of informal social networks made up of strong ties is one of the most salient mechanisms used to guarantee honest employees and this, together with a composite set of properties is signaled throughout. This thesis contributes to the literature on crime in Latin America as well as to the sociological literature on signaling, a branch of analytical sociology.

Abstract (sommario):

The values of residual stresses resulting from a heavily stressed contact are numerically evaluated by employing a three-dimensional strain deformation analysis model. The model is developed in the frame of the incremental theory of plasticity including the von Mises yield criterion, Prandtl-Reuss equations, and Ramberg-Osgood stress-strain equation. Two groups of cylindrical specimens were subjected to rolling contact fatigue, one as the reference group and the other with an induced residual stresses state. To obtain theoretical lives of the tested groups the von Mises equivalent stress is used in Ioannides-Harris rolling contact fatigue model. Both, the experimental data and theoretical analysis reveal more than two times greater fatigue life for the group with induced residual stresses versus the life of the reference group.

Socio-economic aspects are nowadays one of the most important factors for the safety and stability of society. According to them, the possibility of the emergence of pathogenic anomalies threatening the stability of society can be predicted. Based on this fact, it is possible to implement preliminary measures to prevent the occurrence of extraordinary events well in time´s advance. The given theory can be demonstrated on the models of E.W. Burgess concentric zonal structure of the city and on Harris & Ullman multi-core model of the city. Thanks to knowledge from sociology and safety engineering we can to present, how the security and stability of society in a given location can be moved to a higher level, if we know very wel socio-economic aspects of society.

The cam fatigue life of the translating roller-follower system is studied for polynomial and cycloidal displacement functions. The stress distribution in the contact zone between the cam and the roller-follower is determined by using a computer program. The “volume under risk” where the stress field is higher than the endurance limit is determined. Ioannides-Harris (IH) theory is used on the ‘volume under risk’ and the expected fatigue life is calculated. The effects of cam base circle radius, follower offset, follower total lift and cam angular velocity on the fatigue life are studied. The primary design parameter governing the cam fatigue life is found to be the base circle radius. The fatigue life curve shows an improvement in the life up to a critical base circle radius value. Any further increase in the base circle radius appears as a decrease in the fatigue life.

This study assesses the empirical relevance of the Harris-Todaro model at high levels of urbanization a feature that characterizes an increasing number of developing countries, which were largely rural when the model was created 50 years ago. Using data from Brazil, the paper compares observed and model-based predictions of the equilibrium urban employment rate of 449 cities and the rural regions that are the historic sources of their migrant populations. Little support is found in the data for the most basic version of the model. However, extensions that incorporate labor informality and housing markets have much better empirical traction. Harris-Todaro equilibrium relationships are relatively stronger among workers with primary but no high school education, and those relationships are more frequently found under certain conditions: when cities are relatively larger; and when associated rural areas are closer to the magnet city and populated to a greater degree by young adults, who are most likely to migrate.

This report highlights the current state of educational inequities and national efforts to address them through policy, resources, tools, and technical assistance. Based on our review of over sixty equity-centered resources, we find that few toolkits are explicitly designed for K-12 schools and districts. We make a case for practical tools and resources, such as the EET™, to support education leaders in their equity work. Finally, based on our analysis of federal efforts to advance equity and a new administration that is prioritizing racial justice, we outline immediate action steps the Biden-Harris administration can take on this matter.

Objectives. To evaluate the effectiveness and harms of pain management programs that are based on the biopsychosocial model of care, particularly in the Medicare population. Data sources. Electronic databases (Ovid® MEDLINE®, PsycINFO®, CINAHL®, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) from 1989 to May 24, 2021; reference lists; and a Federal Register notice. Review methods. Given lack of consensus on terminology and program definition for pain management, we defined programs as integrated (based in and integrated with primary care) and comprehensive (referral based and separate from primary care) pain management programs (IPMPs and CPMPs). Using predefined criteria and dual review, we selected randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing IPMPs and CPMPs with usual care or waitlist, physical activity, pharmacologic therapy, and psychological therapy in patients with complex acute/subacute pain or chronic nonactive cancer pain. Patients needed to have access to medication support/review, psychological support, and physical function support in programs. Meta-analyses were conducted to improve estimate precision. We classified the magnitude of effects as small, moderate, or large based on predefined criteria. Strength of evidence (SOE) was assessed for the primary outcomes of pain, function, and change in opioid use. Results. We included 57 RCTs; 8 evaluated IPMPs and 49 evaluated CPMPs. Compared with usual care or waitlist, IPMPs were associated with small improvements in pain in the short and intermediate term (SOE: low) and in function in the short term (SOE: moderate), but there were no clear differences at other time points. CPMPs were associated with small improvements in pain immediately postintervention (SOE: moderate) but no differences in the short, intermediate, and long term (SOE: low); for function, improvements were moderate immediately postintervention and in the short term; there were no differences in the intermediate or long term (SOE: low at all time points). CPMPs were associated with small to moderate improvements in function and pain versus pharmacologic treatment alone at multiple time frames (SOE: moderate for function intermediate term; low for pain and function at all other times), and with small improvements in function but no improvements in pain in the short term when compared with physical activity alone (SOE: moderate). There were no differences between CPMPs and psychological therapy alone at any time (SOE: low). Serious harms were not reported, although evidence on harms was insufficient. The mean age was 57 years across IPMP RCTs and 45 years across CPMP RCTs. None of the trials specifically enrolled Medicare beneficiaries. Evidence on factors related to program structure, delivery, coordination, and components that may impact outcomes is sparse and there was substantial variability across studies on these factors. Conclusions. IPMPs and CPMPs may provide small to moderate improvements in function and small improvements in pain in patients with chronic pain compared with usual care. Formal pain management programs have not been widely implemented in the United States for general populations or the Medicare population. To the extent that programs are tailored to patients’ needs, our findings are potentially applicable to the Medicare population. Programs that address a range of biopsychosocial aspects of pain, tailor components to patient need, and coordinate care may be of particular importance in this population.

This report consists of the second phase of a social network analysis of researchers in the United Kingdom who have authored gambling harm studies. Phase 1 was focused on researchers with an institutional affiliation in the UK and their connections to other UK-based researchers. In Phase 2, the analysis is extended to include their coauthors affiliated with research institutions in other countries. The goal is to better understand the strength of existing links among researchers nationally and internationally with expertise in specific areas of gambling harm. The analysis is based on the Framework of Harms, outlined in Measuring gambling-related harms: A framework for action (Wardle et al, 2018). To advance the UK National Strategy to Reduce Gambling Harms effectively, a strong evidence base is required to support each of the three primary factors and eight related subfactors in the Framework.
