Abstract This paper studies the optimal consumption-investment strategy with Heston’s stochastic volatility (SV) model under hyperbolic absolute risk aversion (HARA) utility criterion. The financial market is composed of a risk-less asset and a risky asset, whose price process is supposed to be driven by Heston’s SV model. The risky preference of the individual is assumed to satisfy HARA utility, which recovers power utility, exponential utility and logarithm utility as special cases. HARA utility is of general framework in the utility theory and is seldom studied in the existing literatures. Legendre transform-dual technique along with stochastic dynamic programming principle is presented to deal with our problem and the closed-form solution to the optimal consumption-investment strategy is successfully obtained. Finally, some special cases are derived in detail.

A new explanation for the well-known reluctance of retirees to buy life annuities is due to Milevsky and Young (2002, 2003): Since the decision to purchase longevity insurance is largely irreversible, in uncertain environments a real option to delay annuitization (RODA) generally has value. Milevsky and Young analytically identify and numerically estimate the RODA in a setting of constant relative risk aversion. This paper presents an extension to the case of HARA (or GLUM) preferences, the simplest representation of a consumption habit. The precise date of annuitization can no longer be ascertained with certainty in advance. This paper derives an approximation whereby the agent precommits. The effect of increasing the subsistence consumption rate on the timing of annuity purchase is similar to the effect of increasing the curvature parameter of the utility function. As in the CRRA case studied by Milevsky and Young, delayed annuitization is associated with optimistic predictions of the Sharpe ratio and divergence between annuity purchaser and provider predictions of mortality.

Assume that risk preference of the investor is described by hyperbolic absolute risk aversion (HARA) utility function, which includes power utility, exponential utility, and logarithm utility as special cases. The optimal investment and consumption strategy for HARA utility is explicitly obtained by applying dynamic programming principle and Legendre transform technique. This paper studied an asset and liability management problem with stochastic interest rate, where interest rate is assumed to be governed by an affine interest rate model, while liability process is driven by the drifted Brownian motion. The investors wish to look for an optimal investment strategy to maximize the expected utility of the terminal surplus under hyperbolic absolute risk aversion (HARA) utility function, which consists of power utility, exponential utility, and logarithm utility as special cases. By applying dynamic programming principle and Legendre transform, the explicit solutions for HARA utility are achieved successfully and some special cases are also discussed. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate our results.

Abstract (sommario):

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how members of Australian superannuation funds can manage risks arising from uncertain security returns and unpredictable mortality so as to ensure a steady income stream during retirement. In chapter 2 we note that the proportion of superannuation assets invested in foreign assets has increased over the past two decades, exposing investors to currency risk. Surveys of superannuation funds verify that most international bond holdings, but not equity holdings, have been hedged for currency risk. We test the mean-variance efficiency of this practice against two alternative hedging strategies: a conventional forward hedge and a selective hedge conditioned on the domestic-foreign interest differential. Implementing optimal hedging results in portfolios whose returns stochastically dominate portfolios constructed under restricted equity hedging, according to our new adaptation of Barrett-Donald (2003) tests. Selective hedging works best for equities and conventional hedging for bonds. Chapter 3 applies a discrete-time Merton (1971) model to questions of optimal decumulation and asset allocation for self-funded retirees drawing down lump-sum retirement benefits. Risk management is taken to revolve around protecting a pre-specified minimum consumption stream. Risk tolerances and lifetimes are allowed to span a range of possibilities. In the case of an agent living to age 90, ideal investment in equity-type assets increases gradually from 27-43 % over remaining life. This is much lower than the 55-60% observed among retirees. Conservative investment strategies are needed to meet consumption goals over long lifetimes. Milevsky and Young (2002, 2003) attribute the reluctance to voluntarily annuitise to a valuable real option to delay annuitisation (RODA). Chapter 4 extends the RODA analysis to the case of HARA preferences. A formula for the optimal timing of annuitisation is derived from the solution to a dynamic stochastic consumption and investment problem with uncertain lifetime. The effect of introducing a consumption floor is to reduce the delay before annuity purchase. As in the CRRA case, delayed annuitisation is associated with optimistic predictions of the Sharpe ratio and divergence between annuity purchaser and provider predictions of mortality.

Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon and Red Harvest are examples of iconic hard-boiled detective literature that reflect on the anxieties and tensions of the 1930s-1940s. With the Great Depression looming over these decades, the genre uses the hard-boiled detective as a way to communicate with and understand this time period. In our analysis of game theory, we look at how Dashiell Hammett's characters make decisions based on the actions of other players in the game, illustrating the influences of bargaining power and manipulation. With characters that oftentimes find themselves in situations where they must collude to reach maximum utility, the novels explore the various ways in which one player takes advantage of another, almost always leading towards the detective's best payoff. Game theory provides us with a unique method to looking at literature, hard-boiled fiction particularly, as a reflection of the historical period of its conception and prime.

Assume that we have an~investor who may invests in several risky assets called stocks and in one non-risky asset called bond and that the investor is interested in the expected utility of his/her wealth far in the future. In order to be able to treat the problem, we make several essential simplifying assumptions. First, we assume that the logarithm of the stock market prices is a~multidimensional arithmetic Brownian motion, that the investors pays proportional transaction costs and that the utility function is of a~HARA type. We are able to propose a~strategy that can be called almost optimal in the long run provided that the stock market prices are independent.

Plastic optical lenses replace the glass lens gradually with the rapid development of plastic photovoltaic industry, and occupy most of the global markets.Optical lenses product quality is required strictly.To achieve impact resistance and anti-wear effect, plastic optical lenses are required coatinghard film layers on its surface because of the low hardness and poor wear resistance. This study is to investigate the relationship between the surface of plastic lenses and precision optics hard coating process conditions. This is a multiple response optimization problem. This study combines the Pareto frontier, the desirability function,and cost factor to deal with multiple objective experimental designssubjected to a limited number of experiments.The design is approximated bya D-optimal algorithm. According to this design matrix, optical plastic lenses hard coating experiments were performed and analyzed. We thenidentify the design points ofPareto frontier,build approximating models of responses, and predict the responses of unexecuted design points. If fitted unexecuted design points are not dominated, we then addthem to thePareto frontier.Multiple objectives are converted to a value through desirability function and then divided by the manufacturing cost of each design points. An optimum design is the one with the maximum ratio. An optical plastic lens hard coating example is performed and presented. Our results provide decision makers a more flexible set of optimal solutions to improve the accuracy and reliability of the prediction.

The Dark Triad of personality (subclinical psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism) is associated with exploitative behavior. Although people with these traits may be perceived negatively, they often compete successfully for mates, resources, and power. Research on the Dark Triad highlights its utility for men and downplays the smaller, but still meaningful, samples of women with dark personalities. This chapter summarizes evidence about women’s antisocial behaviors and traits, and hypothesizes that we underestimate women’s ability to deceive and harm others. Women exploit others, and yet our expectations about women tend to be positive and women are generally viewed as nonthreatening. When women cause harm, it is often minimized, and women are held typically less responsible for their actions. Female criminals may have an advantage because their behavior is unexpected. This chapter outlines benefits for underestimated women and proposes additional research to clarify whether the Dark Triad is differentially adaptive for women.

Although mind-wandering and dreaming often appear as trivial or distracting cognitive processes, this chapter suggests that they may also contribute to the evaluation, sorting, and saving of representations of recent events of future value to an individual. But 50 years after spontaneous imagery—night dreaming—was first compared to concurrent cortical EEG, there is limited hard evidence on the neural processes that produce either visual dreaming imagery or the speech imagery of waking spontaneous thought. The authors propose here an outline of a neurocognitive model of such processes with suggestions for future research that may contribute to a better understanding of their utility.

The principle of “best interests” is examined and its utility and limitations described. The use of infant bioethics committees and consultants is described with examples of how they work. The chapter also covers the important role of government neonatal decision making including the President’s Commission for the Study of Ethical Problems in Medicine and Biomedical and Behavioral Research, the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act Amendments of 1984, and the Baby Doe Rules.

This article describes the link between history and various geographies. History and geography were once commonly regarded as sibling disciplines. Despite their long-recognized affinity, history and geography increasingly parted ways as academic professionalization and specialization strengthened during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historians grew skeptical of the hard linkages that geographers of the time posited between historical development and the natural landscape. They also increasingly focused on national history, regarding the territories of nation-states as holistic totalities requiring little geographical attention. Geographers, for their part, disengaged from historical concerns as they turned increasingly to theory and method. In the latter decades of the twentieth century, the two disciplines began to shown some signs of reconvergence. Most geographers now recognize the need for historical contextualization, just as many historians have rediscovered the importance of spatial relations while discovering the utility of geographical methods.

El Atlas interactivo de leishmaniasis en las Américas: aspectos clínicos y diagnósticos diferenciales es una publicación innovadora en la que se abordan los principales conceptos, conocimientos y diferencias clínicas de las leishmaniasis en distintos países endémicos de la Región de las Américas. Además, presenta las principales enfermedades de la piel y las mucosas que deben considerarse en el diagnóstico diferencial de las diversas manifestaciones clínicas de las leishmaniasis, lo cual representa uno de los principales desafíos para los profesionales responsables del diagnóstico de la enfermedad.Esta publicación es el resultado de un trabajo conjunto de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS) con expertos y colaboradores en el tema, que ha contado con el apoyo del Hospital Universitario Centro Dermatológico Federico Lleras Acosta de Colombia y de los Ministerios de Salud de los Estados Miembros de la OPS. El objetivo de esta obra es facilitar a los profesionales de salud la posibilidad de buscar, conocer y analizar de forma interactiva las 1.029 fotografías e ilustraciones de leishmaniasis y de las 55 principales enfermedades que se consideran en el diagnostico diferencial. La obra que hoy ve la luz es el producto del trabajo conjunto de todos los docentes que integran la Cátedra 2 de Derecho Administrativo, Segunda Parte de nuestra Facultad. Desde mi ya muy lejana época de estudiante la dispersión bibliográfica dificultaba el estudio de nuestra disciplina y, en no pocas oportunidades, la necesidad de asumir la lectura parcial de decenas de libros contribuía a que el Derecho Administrativo fuera catalogado como una cuestión árida y poco menos que inabordable. De allí que el proyecto de editar un trabajo de estas características haya estado rondando desde hace décadas para finalmente concretarse a impulsos de un hecho trascendente: la puesta en vigencia de un nuevo programa que viene a reemplazar al que se utiliza desde la década de 1970. La obra se ajusta puntualmente a sus contenidos con el objetivo de que los estudiantes cuenten con un volumen que les permita conocer acabadamente toda la materia, sin necesidad de peregrinar por numerosos libros y artículos sueltos no siempre disponibles en las bibliotecas donde resulta clásico que la demanda supere a la oferta. En la tradición marxista el desocupado integra el ambigüario que conocemos con el nombre de lumpenproletariado; ese lugar de la desorganización, de la espontaneidad pero también de la irascibilidad, lo instintivo, lo irracional, lo inconsciente, lo insolidario, del sálvese quien pueda, la pasividad, de la inacción; un lugar que les cabe a los “pueblos sin historia”. Y cuando el lumpenaje se digna a actuar, el sentido que asume su acción sirve a los intereses de la burguesía o de la clase enquistada en el gobierno. Por esta lectura del asunto, el lumpenproletariado ha sido una categoría menor en la teoría social; una categoría cargada de connotaciones despectivas a la cual antes que comprenderla se la utilizó para juzgar y descalificar a la masa que no tenía la oportunidad de encontrarse. El lumpenproletariado ha sido aquella masa informe difusa y errante, una masa desarticulada, fragmentada. Con el paso del tiempo el lumpenproletariado dejó de ser un calificativo despectivo para transformarse en una herramienta teórica que contribuye con más preguntas que las que puede aportar el propio proletariado. Aunque no haya desaparecido aún el proletariado, sostendremos que el lumpenproletariado colabora mejor con algunos interrogantes sobre esta época porque es una categoría que nos permite echar luz sobre los procesos de heterogenización social e identificación fetichizante; sobre los procesos de lumpenproletarización que se han actualizado en el neoliberalismo. En Vida lumpen, bestiario de la multitud, el lumpenproletariado es una promesa, aunque al mismo tiempo sigue siendo un callejón sin salida, una fatalidad, algo que se sigue experimentando con pesimismo. La lumpenproletarización es la imposibilidad de la acción colectiva pero también, al mismo tiempo, constituye un nuevo punto de partida para pensar la acción colectiva; una acción más radical, más democrática, más horizontal.

Abstract (sommario):

This chapter focuses on a new feature of paternalism: responsibility transfer. Responsibility transfer means holding an individual liable for a perfectly licit action, on the grounds that this action has initiated a chain of events that had led to harm inflicted by another individual. Responsibility transfer not only originates from the will to allocate responsibility to those who are rational; it is also determined by the relative capacity to pay of the various actors involved. This partly explains why there is a tendency to take into account not only the person's presumed cognitive capacity to act responsibly but also his financial capacity to pay the damages. In a world with limited liability, it is more efficient to allocate responsibilities to those individuals or entities that can pay: this allows one to increase the penalties and get better incentives.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) lists both suicidal behavior disorder and nonsuicidal self-injury as conditions for further study. The essential feature of suicidal behavior disorder is that the individual has at least some intent to die. The essential feature of nonsuicidal self-harm is that the individual repeatedly inflicts superficial injuries to the body. Controversy continues to exist about whether the proposed disorders are part of a continuum of self-harm or distinct categories. Suicidal behavior is growing fastest in pre- and early adolescent girls. Nonsuicidal self-injury should be distinguished from stereotypic self-injury. Screeners can help to identify students who need a thorough assessment. Full assessments should utilize a crisis team. Recommendations are made for each tier using a multitiered system of supports framework. A case example illustrates school-based intervention for nonsuicidal self-injury.

This chapter discusses how machine learning works and, as a result, how decisions are made by modern intelligent algorithms or ‘classifiers’. It critically evaluates a real-world ‘classifier’, the Harm Assessment Risk Tool (HART)—an algorithmic decision-making tool employed by the Durham police force to inform custody decisions concerning individuals who have been arrested for suspected criminal offences. It evaluates the tool by reference to four normative benchmarks: prediction accuracy, fairness and equality before the law, transparency and accountability, and informational privacy and freedom of expression. It argues that systems which utilize decision-making (or decision-supporting) algorithms, and have the potential to detrimentally affect individual or collective human rights, deserve significantly greater regulatory scrutiny than those systems that use decision-making algorithms to process objects.

This chapter explores the theory that, to avoid the ‘tyranny of the majority’, we should be given the liberty to act just as we wish, provided that we do no harm to others. The focus is on John Stuart Mill's Liberty Principle (also known as the Harm Principle), according to which you may justifiably limit a person's freedom of action only if they threaten harm to another. The chapter considers Mill's arguments based on the Liberty Principle, including his claim there should be complete freedom of thought and discussion, and that harming another's interests is not a sufficient condition to justify constraint. It also discusses justifications for the Liberty Principle by focusing on issues of rights and utility, individuality and progress, and liberty as an intrinsic good. It concludes with an analysis of some of the problems of the kind of liberalism espoused by Mill's Liberty Principle.

We consider the differentially private sparse learning problem, where the goal is to estimate the underlying sparse parameter vector of a statistical model in the high-dimensional regime while preserving the privacy of each training example. We propose a generic differentially private iterative gradient hard threshoding algorithm with a linear convergence rate and strong utility guarantee. We demonstrate the superiority of our algorithm through two specific applications: sparse linear regression and sparse logistic regression. Specifically, for sparse linear regression, our algorithm can achieve the best known utility guarantee without any extra support selection procedure used in previous work \cite{kifer2012private}. For sparse logistic regression, our algorithm can obtain the utility guarantee with a logarithmic dependence on the problem dimension. Experiments on both synthetic data and real world datasets verify the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm.

Abstract This paper discusses the utilization of a specifically designed magnetic media defect plotting utility. This utility provides the analyst with the ability to view the physical locations of data errors on the disk drive and identify damage to magnetic media. With the failure signature understood, the analyst can now go on to isolate the underlying failure mechanism, without electrical analysis. Further, with the failure mechanism identified critical feedback can be provided to appropriate engineering areas so that the cause of failure can be limited at its source.

The utility of the Haar function wavelet has long been dismissed due to its inability to transpose between the time domain and the frequency domain. However, the Haar function possesses attributes that make it an ideal wavelet for certain applications. In this paper, we explore the use of the Haar function as a means to expose aspects of musical tone that are not available through other sound analysis techniques. Specifically, the method presented here was used to identify the differences in the tone of the French Horn created by different acoustically reflective surfaces placed in the near field of the horn bell. The fundamentals of the Haar function wavelet are described and its use as a signal analyzer is explained. Results are shown that demonstrate the effect of two different kinds of sound reflectors constructed for a major North American concert hall.

Bayesian games offer a suitable framework for games where the utility degrees are additive in essence. This approach does nevertheless not apply to ordinal games, where the utility degrees do not capture more than a ranking, nor to situations of decision under qualitative uncertainty. This paper proposes a representation framework for ordinal games under possibilistic incomplete information (π-games) and extends the fundamental notion of Nash equilibrium (NE) to this framework. We show that deciding whether a NE exists is a difficult problem (NP-hard) and propose a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) encoding. Experiments on variants of the GAMUT problems confirm the feasibility of this approach.

The problem of computing the strategy to commit to has been widely investigated in the scientific literature for the case where a single-follower is present. In the multi-follower setting though, results are only sporadic. In this paper, we address the multi-follower case for normal-form games, assuming that, after observing the leader’s commitment, the followers play pure strategies and reach a Nash equilibrium. We focus on the pessimistic case where, among many equilibria, one minimizing the leader’s utility is chosen (the opposite case is computationally trivial). We show that the problem is NP-hard even with only two followers, and propose an exact exponential-time algorithm which, for any number of followers, either finds an equilibrium when the game admits a finite one or, if not, an α-approximation of the supremum of the leader’ utility, for any α > 0.

This paper presents the results of a study conducted by Itron, Sustainable Conservation and Bowen & Associates for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) to investigate the status and costs of controls for reducing emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from small (100 to 300 kW) reciprocating engines operating on biogas from dairy digesters. During the course of the study, it became apparent that simultaneous environmental policies have created a fundamental “catch 22” situation for California’s biogas industry. On one hand, California air quality regulations require distributed generation (DG) technologies to achieve aggressive emission limits for control of oxides of nitrogen (NOx). At the same time, California’s Governor and Legislature have passed landmark legislation calling for GHG emissions to be reduced by twenty-five percent to 1990 levels by no later than 2020. A “catch 22” occurs because while DG technologies, particularly biogas fueled technologies, can play a key role in reducing GHG emissions, NOx control technologies needed to meet the required NOx levels have not matured to commercial readiness. This requires project developers to take substantial risks on both the financial and technical front without the likelihood of recouping their investments. The result creates an impasse that potentially deprives California not only of forward progress in reducing GHG emissions but forestalls significant interim NOx reductions that could otherwise be achieved. However, the situation highlights a problem that extends beyond California’s borders and the biogas industry: how to simultaneously achieve aggressive air quality targets while making significant reductions in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This paper presents the findings of an investigation into proposed NOx emissions limits for biogas to energy applications and how those requirements interact with policies to reduce GHG emissions.

Owing to the recent developments in the field of industrial automation, assembly lines have played an integral role in the economic uplift of the industrial units. Mixed Model Assembly Lines are the answer to a variety of scenarios which involve customized production following a particular ‘product mix’, i.e., several models of a product are jointly processed on a line, in an increased quantity, quality and productive environment. Hence, to determine the optimal operating schedule/sequence of the operations along with other impacting factors such as total utility work, setup cost, part consumption rates, etc., still remains a widely researched topic today. Moreover, sequencing problems are termed as NP-hard and a variety of sequencing heuristics have been applied in literature to solve them. The heuristic, Genetic Algorithm, was formulated based on binary encoding/decoding, two point cross over and uniform mutation, and applied in this paper to optimize two objectives; one, to minimize total utility work and two, to generate sequence of the models as per the first goal. A methodology was hence, developed to test and analyze the impact of factors such as number of stations, length of stations, conveyor speed, time of operations, number of primary models, and Minimum Part Set on the concerned objectives. An attempt was also made to model the entire process with IDEF0 modeling technique. Industry-oriented problems were then presented to test the algorithm in real world conditions. Finally, the results were critically examined and respective improvement measures were stated.

A 46 MW 5,500 rpm multistage single casing utility steam turbine experienced strong subsynchronous rotordynamic vibration of the first rotor mode; preventing full load operation of the unit. The root cause of the vibration stemmed from steam whirl forces generated at secondary sealing locations in combination with flexible rotor-bearing system. Several attempts were made to eliminate the subsynchronous vibration by modifying bearing geometry and clearances, which came short of enabling full load operation. The following paper presents experimental tests and analytical results focused on stabilizing a 46 MW 6,230kg utility steam turbine experiencing subsynchronous rotordynamic instability. The paper advances an integral squeeze film damper (ISFD) solution, which was implemented to resolve the subsynchronous vibration and allow full load and full speed operation of the machine. The present work addresses the bearing-damper analysis, rotordynamic analysis, and experimental validation through waterfall plots, and synchronous vibration data of the steam turbine rotor. Analytical and experimental results show that using ISFD improved the stability margin by a factor of 12 eliminating the subsynchronous instability and significantly reducing critical speed amplification factors. Additionally, by using ISFD the analysis showed significant reduction in interstage clearance closures during critical speed transitions in comparison to the hard mounted tilting pad bearing configuration.

For hydrogen to make an impact, it needs to expand its utility beyond its existing applications.
