Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The use of technology has remained a staple in modern day industry because it creates an enabling environment, which promotes innovation that has propelled globalization. Maritime and tourism are two such critical sectors that have benefited from such technology and stand to benefit more in light of the fourth industrial revolution. The handcart has been used by humans for centuries as a mode of transportation. It has remained relevant to this day, more so a positive contributor to public market experience in developing countries. Notwithstanding, this phenomenon remained largely under-explored and informal with little to no integration in the planning of public markets or market districts. As such, little study or research exists to inform policies to improve and integrate the handcart profession in the overall planning and rejuvenation of downtown Kingston, Jamaica. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to understand the characteristics and benefits of the handcart logistics by investigating the socioeconomic and spatial dynamics surrounding the operations of this mode of transportation. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative and quantitative techniques were used to completely grasp the complexity of factors that influence and sustain the handcart trade within the coronation market as well as its contribution to Jamaica’s economy. Collection of data was achieved via the administration of questionnaires supported by observations and interviews. Geographic Information System (GIS) was used along with satellite images to integrate spatial representations in the analysis and discussions of results. Findings Consistent with the reviewed literature, the results and analyses revealed that, despite the handcart’s informality and inadequate infrastructural support, handcarts are generally perceived as beneficial to market districts. They fill the transportation gaps where formal governance operations failed and contribute to the local economy by providing employment for low-skilled persons. The handcart industry has been sustained because of the need for the service by mostly vendors and shoppers but more so because of the economic benefits that have been accrued by builders, owners and operators. Research limitations/implications The research focused on handcarts used to convey goods and not carts used as mobile vending carts. In addition, the geographical scope of the research is restricted to the Coronation Market in Kingston. Obtaining knowledge about the sector poses a challenge because some or all aspects of informal activity are not recorded. Various opportunities exist for the improvement of handcarts. As such, they must be incorporated in any future transportation improvement plans in the city of Kingston, Jamaica. Practical implications Despite the attempts to regularize the handcart phenomenon in the downtown Kingston market district, the handcart operators are still not incorporated in various plans and improvement initiatives. Notwithstanding, the benefits to the transportation gap and local economy warrants the need to pay keen attention to this phenomenon and promote regularization. With the introduction of Kingston as a UNESCO Creative City in 2016 and the advent of Airbnb, the potential exists for exponential growth in cultural and community tourism in downtown Kingston. The use of the handcart can therefore be leveraged and integrated in the tourism package to facilitate the movement of tourist luggage from bus terminals and parking lots to their destination in the downtown communities. Originality/value The handcart system is a prominent feature of market districts in Jamaica and, as such, this research bears high levels of significance because it can be replicated or used as a basis to inform handcart policies and the design to improve logistics in any tourism destination. The research serves as a body of knowledge to “all and sundry” because it unearthed some of the handcart’s attributes and contribution to the local economy, can contribute to adequate layout of Market districts by government to incorporate the handcart system, facilitate their integration in cultural and community tourism and facilitate the handcart trade being viewed by society as a profession. At the advent of this Fourth Industrial Revolution, an upgraded design of the handcart may appear.

Abstract (sommario):
Background . Handling a heavy load on a handcart is common in the wholesale and retail trade markets in India and many parts of the globe. These carts transport goods between major markets, warehouses and transporters. We assessed the physiological workload among handcart pullers in terms of cardiovascular load (CVL), energy expenditure (EE), heart rate (HR), physiological cost of work and subjective rating of perceived exertion. Methods . Physiological workload was assessed with the help of HR during resting, working (15 minutes) and recovery state with a smart wearable device to extrapolate percentage of CVL, EE and physiological cost of work among handcart pullers. Subjective assessment of exertion was measured with the Borg 5-point rating scale among 35 cart pullers. Data were analysed using Microsoft Excel version 2010. Results . It was found that in handcart-pulling activity, EE was 11.706 kJ/minute, average working HR was 128 beats/minute and physiological cost of work was 89.09 beats/minute with no loads on handcart. This signifies that the activity falls under heavy physiological workload. The average percentage of CVL was found to be 50.5%, which falls under acceptable category for persons with a healthy cardiovascular system. Thirty-one (88.6%) of the participants reported the activity to be moderately heavy, whereas 4 (11.4%) participants mentioned it to be light. Conclusions . Handcart-pulling operation in this study without load on cart was found to be a heavy physiological workload. In real-time situations, the load, road conditions, long duration and traffic congestion is likely to result in a higher range of physiological workload on cart pullers.

Abstract (sommario):
An automatic feeding device for substrate filling was designed to address the challenges of difficult feeding and low efficiency in the citrus seedling pot filling and transferring machine. The device comprises a framework, tracks, overturning frame, drive system, etc. In order to ensure optimal performance, the frame’s turning angle was set at a minimum of 110° and the angle between the frame’s horizontal plane and slope was determined to be 120°. Following optimization, the number and intensity of sudden changes in velocity, angular velocity, and thrust were reduced, thereby prolonging the device’s service life. The prototype test demonstrated that the device has an average feeding time of 9.86 s, is capable of raising 0.14 m3 of substrate in a single cycle, and has a handcart turning angle of 111°. Furthermore, no residual substrate remained in the handcart, and the handcart fixing mechanism operated correctly. The torque measurement results of the motor output shaft were found to be consistent with the simulation results in ADAMS, with a maximum force difference of only 298 N. The simulation was found to be accurate, with an error rate of only 3.67%. This model can be utilized as a dependable reference for the optimization of the design of the automatic feeding device.

Abstract (sommario):
A handclap is a convenient and easily available source for room acoustic measurements. If used correctly (e.g., application of optimal hand configuration) it can provide usable results for the measurement of acoustic parameters, within an expected deviation. Its biggest drawbacks are the low sound pressure level (especially in the low frequency range) as well as its low repeatability. With this in mind, this paper explores the idea of testing a handclap with a glove in order to assess the effect on its source characteristics. For this purpose, measurements were performed with 12 participants wearing leather gloves. Sound levels were compared with simple handclaps without gloves, and between grouped results (overall A-weighted SPL, octave bands, 1/3 octave bands). Measurements were also performed several times to evaluate the effect on repeatability. Results indicate that the use of leather gloves can increase the sound levels of a handclap by 10 dB and 15 dB in the low frequency ranges (63 Hz and 125 Hz octave bands, respectively). Handclaps with leather gloves also point toward improved repeatability, particularly in the low-frequency part of the frequency spectrum. In conclusion, compared to simple handclaps without gloves, evidence from this study supports the concept that handclaps with leather gloves can be used in engineering practices for improved room acoustic measurements of room impulse response.

Clark, Judith. "To Hell in a Handcart Educational realities, teachers' work and neo-liberal restructuring in NSW TAFE". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/590.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the impact of neo-liberal economic restructuring on teachers, specifically teachers in technical and further education. Historically, there has been limited research undertaken on teachers as workers, and even less on TAFE teachers. During the period covered by the study, TAFE was buffeted by the massive changes, social, political, cultural and economic, that were occurring on a global scale. As a result, TAFE has been a system in crisis. The consequences are addressed by an empirical study that examines NSW TAFE teachers' experience of the great changes that have occurred to their work since the late 1980s. Forty-one teachers were interviewed in tape recorded sessions lasting around one hour each. The respondents were drawn from twenty-seven teaching sections across all the major industry areas represented in TAFE. Twenty of the teachers were from metropolitan locations, twenty-one were regional. Nine managers were also interviewed, from Head of Studies to senior management levels, covering those with local as well as state-wide responsibilities. The changes to TAFE have been driven by a pervasive neo-liberal ideology adopted by both major parties in Australia. This study documents the experience of TAFE teachers as that ideology led to a corporatised vocational education and training system strongly oriented to the market. It also records their responses to the narrowing of curriculum that resulted from the "industry-driven" vocational education and training policies of governments. The study gives voice to their grief, frustration and anger as their working conditions deteriorated and their commitment to quality education was undermined. The study documents the teachers' resistance to the processes of organisational fragmentation, the increasing incidence of cost-driven, rather than educational, decision-making, and the commodification of curriculum driven by a series of policy decisions taken at both national and state level. The study compares these experiences with those of the TAFE managers, whose response to the crisis, while differing from that of the teachers, supports the teachers' commitment to public education as a social good. The study concludes that the NSW TAFE teachers' resistance has continued to act as a brake on the excesses of neo-liberalism. Some possibilities for an alternative vision of technical and further education thus remain.

Abstract (sommario):
Drawing heavily on Freud and Lacans contributions psychoanalysis, this dissertation aims to explore the diagnosis of mental retardation. Therefore, beginning with an historical analysis of the construction of a social and scientific discourse of the very expression mental retardation1 we discuss whether such a diagnosis and its associated phenomena can point to some particularity that might furnish a guideline either to treatment or to some clinical direction. While we point out that neither Freud nor Lacan espoused a specific theory about mental retardation, Lacan for his part believed not only that psychoanalysis could be effective in treating the retarded but also that Freud had erred in contraindicated such treatment. However, Lacan in his oeuvre never settles on one fixed meaning for the term mental retardation but rather uses this turn of phrase in several manners and contexts, often in order to underscore some irony or to highlight certain structural aspects of mans relationship to knowledge. Therefore, this work focuses on the commentaries of Lacan, in which he carefully examines the diagnosis of mental retardation. Later, we examine three distinct analytical modes, whose authors, drawing upon the same source material (i.e., Lacans work), proposed three different definitions of this mental handicap. The first mode refers to the distinction between psychosis and mental retardation. The second mode reflects on mental retardation as a phenomenon, or defense, linked to a strategy of imaginarization this strategy in fact could be present in all three clinical structures (neurosis, psychosis, and perversion). The third mode relates mental retardation to inhibition. From this discussion and from the analysis of clinical cases, we indicate that so-called mental retardation can be a function of certain phenomena related to an imaginary inflation. On one hand, this treatment path seems interesting, because it allows us both to go beyond the concept of a deficit related to mental retardation and to consider the inclusion of a subject in this field. On the other hand, the real value of clinical treatment becomes apparent when such treatment is not reduced to a mere analysis of certain phenomena. In this sense, we must take into account: Mannonis challenge (1985), that doctors and psychoanalysts are not free from prejudice; Bruno´s consideration (1986), that the psychoanalytical treatment of the so-called mentally retarded in fact follows the guidelines of standard treatment; and Lacans speech, that we always say more than we want to say and know more than we believe we know

This dissertation´s objective is to investigate, within the psychoanalytical clinic practice, the possible effects that physical handicap may have on childreen, in their psychic constitution process as well as determine to what extent such an experience may effect their parent´s psychic and their relacionship wiyh their child. This research is based on Freud´s psychoanalysis and Piera Aulagnier´s meta-psychological findings. It also the results of my study on clinic practices with handcapped childreen and their parents. It argues that, at the time of these childreen´s birth, the presence of a particular deficiency may, in some cases, trigger a nesting trauma when the mother does not manage to project on the infant´s proper body the expected image wich she had before the birth. The development of such trauma wil depend on the psychic mechanisms the mother may have at hand. The psychoanalytical intervention aims at working strategies for dealing with the mourning for the child that was expected but did not happen, and to enable the mother to dedicate herself to the child as so, as an autonomous and unique new being

"An Ethnography of Moving in Nairobi: Pedestrians, Handcarts, Minibuses and the Vitality of Urban Mobility". Doctoral diss., 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.41272.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
abstract: This ethnography follows mobile trajectories on roads in Nairobi to investigate how the transformation of transport infrastructure has affected people’s everyday mobility. I follow diverse mobile actors, including pedestrians, handcart (mkokoteni) workers, and minibus (matatu) operators, whose practices and ideas of moving are central to understand the city’s ordinary mobility. I also situate their everyday ways of moving in the rules, plans and ideas of regulators, such as government officials, engineers and international experts, who focus on decongesting roads and attempt to reshape Nairobi’s better urban mobility. Despite official and popular aspirations for building new roads and other public transport infrastructure, I argue that many mobile actors still pursue and struggle with preexisting and non-motorized means and notions of moving that are not reflected in the promise of and plans for better mobility. This ethnography also reveals how certain important forms of ordinary mobility have been socially marginalized. It explores what kinds of difficulties are created when the infrastructural blueprints of road “experts” and the notions that politicians promote about a new urban African mobility fail to match the reality of everyday road use by the great majority of Nairobi residents. By employing mobile participant observation of the practices of moving, this study also finds important ethnographic implications and suggestions for the study of mobile subjects in an African city where old and new forms of mobility collide.

Abstract (sommario):
Col. William Shepperd Ashe, President of the Wilmington and Weldon railroad, is called on by Jefferson Davis to create a unified rail system for the Confederacy-as the Union states have done. He tries but fails-a confederation built on disdain for central authority defeats his effort. When he learns that his son has ben captured in battle, fate unknown, he hurries home from Wilmington to Rocky Point-a distance of twenty miles-on a handcar propelled by two employees. But he never makes it-an oncoming train, running ahead of schedule and with no headlight, smashes into the handcar, mortally injuring him. His captured son, Samuel A’Court Ashe, is exchanged and returns to duty as second in command of the Fayetteville Arsenal.

Abstract Believers requested the song “Föl, barátim!” (Forward, My Friends) at almost every midweek service of the IG that I attended in Pees, where many elderly Magyars were present. It is a translation of Philip Bliss’s “Hold the Fort.” Although no one used a musical score, the singers interspersed dotted and even rhythms in a way that was nearly congruent with Bliss’s original.1 They used heavy accents and handclaps, emphasizing many consonants and alliterative “z” sounds in the refrain line.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter deals with samba in Rio de Janeiro at the turn of the twentieth century. At the time, samba was practiced primarily at parties, at the homes of Bahian immigrant families, similar to the way in which samba de roda is practiced in Bahia today. At the parties of these Bahian tias (or aunts) in Rio de Janeiro—such as the famous Tia Ciata—samba was danced in the backyard and in the dining room, to the sound of songs and handclaps, while in the drawing rooms it was a different genre of music and dance that was predominant: choro, instrumental music where people such as the great flutist and composer Pixinguinha, among others, made their mark.

Abstract (sommario):
Counting out, or choosing who’s it, is as much a part of most games as the game itself. This chapter begins by discussing twenty-nine examples of counting-out formulas. A transcript of a recording follows, featuring counting out and other games, illustrating third grade girls’ and boys’ speech patterns and uses. Girls and boys verbally jostle to dominate the recording session. The girls then introduce other games, like handclaps and freeze tag. The bell rings and the session ends. Toward the end of the chapter, Ruthanna, a nineteen-year-old student from Tulane University, recalls counting-out formulas she and her friends used when playing in Cooperstown, New York. The items she remembered were almost identical to those collected in Lafayette, La., and other south Louisiana cities. This illustrates the range and staying power of these simple choosing formulas.
