Abstract (sommario):
"Born on 1 February 1901, the purpose of Femina was to promote a new feminine type so, they prioritized Poetry. Was it just for embellishment? An open space for creation? Comtesse de Noailles, Queen of Romania, double-barrelled names, worked towards its prestige until a poetry contest on 15 January 1903. Any female reader could enter the competition. It was a success and some new poetesses came to light: Hélène Picard got the National Poetry Award in 1907. Thanks to her book L’instant éternel, she could enter famous «salons parisiens» and approach the writer Colette. The point: what were the exact function, support and limits of Femina before the advent of Surrealism?"

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Aim To assess the feasibility and amount of cyanoacrylate glue that can be injected safely per session, complications, and long-term results in GOV1, GOV2 and IGV1 varices, using a modified method. Method All patients from October 2008 to December 2019 presenting to us with variceal bleeding were included. We injected 0.5 mL of cyanoacrylate glue followed by 1.5 mL to 3 mL distilled water in all GOV 1, GOV 2 and IGV varices. Number of glues used were not restricted. Esophageal variceal ligation (EVL) was done for esophageal varices. Follow-up was done at 4 weeks and 3 to 6 months and analyzed. Results 2299 patients received therapy. Male:female, 69%:31%. Causes of varices–cirrhosis (84.9%) and extrahepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) (15.1%). Causes of cirrhosis–alcohol (38.4%), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (29%), hepatitis B (19.9%), hepatitis C (10.1%), Wilson’s disease (1.8%), and autoimmune diseases (0.9%). As much as 41.1% had blood in stomach and 10.2% had active spurt on index endoscopy. As much as 14.5% required endotracheal intubation (active bleed [53.1%], encephalopathy [40.5%], respiratory distress [6.6%]). As much as 30.9% had GOV1 + GOV2, 1.5% had GOV2 + IGV1, 21.3% had GOV1 + IGV1 and 16.4% had GOV1 + GOV2 + IGV1. Hemostasis could be achieved in 99.2% on index endoscopy. A total of 18 (0.8%) patients had uncontrolled bleed of whom 10 (55.6%) had hepatocellular carcinoma. Ongoing bleed was treated with transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPSS) (61.1%) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided coiling (38.8%). Amount of glue required for gastric variceal obturation was 3.6 on index endoscopy, 1.6 on follow-up at 4 to 6 weeks, and 1.2 at 3 months follow up. Glue extrusion with ulcers were seen in 6.4% at 4 to 6 weeks and 4.3% at 3 months. Rebleed occurred in 2.1% and 0.7% patients before 4 weeks and 3 months follow-up, respectively. As much as 1.3% and 1.2% patients were lost to follow-up before 4 weeks and 3 months follow-up sessions, respectively. Complications include pulmonary aspiration in 0.9% and bleeding from ulcers 2.8%. No evidence of pulmonary embolism was seen. In two endoscopic procedures, glue splashing into operator’s eyes occurred. Incidents of needle getting stuck in the varix occurred in three patients. Conclusions Our modified protocol for glue in gastric varices is safe and feasible, as it has less rebleed, no pulmonary embolism and less ulcers with glue extrusion as compared with available literature.

Abstract (sommario):
At the end of the 19th century, the teaching profession was the aspiration of many peasant sons. The position of a teacher ensured a modest but quite stable income. A Lithuanian, born in 1989, Stanislaw Keturakis, was one of graduates of the Teachers’ College in Wejwery near Kaunas. This institution offered a state scholarship. In return for this financial help, its graduates had to accept posts in primary schools determined by educational authorities. A few graduates of this school, mostly Lithuanians, were sent to work in village schools of Piotrków province. One of them, Stanislaw Keturakis, began his first teaching job in a school in Jedlno. He was confronted with difficult living conditions, the school was only planned to be built. At this time, he married Józefa Birsztejn and they had two sons: Eugeniusz Józef (1901) and Zdzisław Aleksander (1904). Peasants perceived teachers as tsarist officials. In 1901, S. Keturakis was transferred to Mstów, to work as a teacher, then to Wancerzów, and again back to Jedlno. Taking over a position of a teacher in Zagórze (1907) was clearly a promotion. The school belonged to the private property of Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich of Russia, a brother of Emperor Nicholas II. The last stage of S. Keturakis’s teaching career was his work in a school in Zagórze. Working there in the years 1907–1914, he taught Russian, Polish, Arithmetic, History and Geography. At the end of the summer 1914, he got an opportunity to take over the post of the forester’s assistant in Orłow province, but the outbreak of the war made it impossible. Lack of any sources does not allow us to determine what the further life of Stanislaw Keturakis was like.

Allama Iqbal was a great thinker, philosopher, poet as well as an educationist. He started his career as McLeod Arabic reader on 13 May 1899 at the University of Punjab. As MacLeod Arabic reader he translated, compiled, and write books and research articles on different subjects. During the same period, he taught English literature in Islamia college and Govt college Lahore respectively for six months after taking unpaid leave from the university of Punjab. After expiry of his contract as Mcleod Arabic reader at Punjab University he joined Government college Lahore in June 1903 as assistant professor of Philosophy. In 1905 he went to Europe on study leave to pursue the Bar at Law and PhD. Although before he returns from Europe in 1908, he resigned from his job as a teacher. But he continued teaching students in college and universities on the requests of the institutions. He also compiled textbooks of various subjects and was associated with management committees of educational institutes. Allama Iqbal closely observed the eastern and western systems of education and criticizes both due to their shortcomings. Based on his experiences and observation he had the ideas about the education of Indians specially Muslims, which are expressed in his various writings. Iqbal’s services and ideas as an educationist have been little discussed. In this article a research and explanatory review of Iqbal’s services and concepts as an educationist have been made.

Abstract (sommario):
A survey on Mycobacterium bovis and M. tuberculosis in humans has been performed in four Central European countries (Croatia, the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic and Slovenia) during the years 1990 to 1999. These countries cover an area of 204 688 km2 with 22 135 million population. During the period, new cases of tuberculosis were bacteriologically diagnosed in 47 516 patients. M. tuberculosis was detected in 47 461 (99.88%) cases, whereas M. bovis was found only in 55 (0.12%) patients. The rate of infection due to M. bovis in humans did not exceed 0.29% in the study countries. The annual incidence of bacteriological confirmed M. bovis cases did not exceed 0.1 per 100 000 inhabitants. In the Czech Republic out of 44 tuberculosis patients due to M. bovis, 32 (72.7%) were older than 61 years and originated from rural areas, where they lived during childhood and worked in agricultural occupations. These patients may have suffered a reactivation of persistent (long-standing) M. bovis infection as they got older. Bovine tuberculosis in cattle was eliminated from these countries during the second half of the 1960s (Croatia in 1966, Czech Republic and Slovak Republic – former Czechoslovakia in 1968, Slovenia in 1973) and the incidence of outbreaks of bovine tuberculosis in cattle were very low, thus the disease in humans was unexpected.

Abstract (sommario):
Background:When serum uric acid rapidly increases or decreases due to such as alcohol consumption or fasting, free urate crystals are formed, which induce an acute joint inflammation referred to as an acute gout attack. In 86.4% of patients with gout, dual energy computed tomography demonstrated the deposition of urate crystals in vasculature, and urate crystals have been observed in coronary arteries and various tissues in 10.9% of patients with a heart transplant. However, whether hyperuricemia and urate crystal directly cause cardiovascular disease is not well known. We previously reanalyzed the CARES trial to calculate the mortality rates based on the median duration of exposure to study drugs and the median follow-up duration. A sharp increase in mortality was observed after allopurinol and febuxostat were discontinued. Even in view of the Sick-Stopper Effect, for about 40-fold increase in mortality following drug discontinuation, we postulated that the sharp increase in mortality may be associated with rapid changes in uric acid level (rebound hyperuricemia), and that withdrawal of hypouricemic agent leads to an acute inflammatory response due to an abrupt increase in serum uric acid level with subsequent free urate crystal formation in the cardiovascular system (cardiovascular gout attack)(1).Objectives:Based on this hypothesis that some cardiovascular events may be cardiovascular gout attacks, we investigated the association between the cardiovascular event and initiation of hypouricemic agent, when is accompanied by acute gout attack and/or fluctuation of uric acid, in gout patients. Methods:Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service (KNHIS) database, which covers the entire Korean population, we conducted a population-based cohort study among gout patients who initiated allopurinol or febuxostat between 2012 and 2018. The initiators were defined as those who had no prior dispensing of any urate-lowering therapy for at least 60 months before the first dispensing date (i.e. index date) of either allopurinol or febuxostat. We excluded patients with a diagnosis of cancer and patients treated with benzbromarone. We investgated a composite cardiovascular event of hospitalized myocardial infarction, ischemic stroke, and cerebral hemorrhage. Results:We identified hospitalizations for cardiovascular event (acute myocardial infarction (n = 3538), cerebral infarction (n = 5127), and cerebral hemorrhage (n = 1593)) that occurred within 2 year before and 2 year after initiation of allopurinol or febuxostat. Of these, 4333 cardiovascular event (0.014 per person-time, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.014 to 0.015) occurred in 2 years before initiation of allopurinol or febuxostat, 1032 cardiovascular event (0.081 per person-time, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.076 to 0.086) occurred in 30 days before initiation of allopurinol or febuxostat. And, 83 cardiovascular event (0.030 per person-time, 95% CI, 0.024 to 0.037) occurred in 7 days after initiation of allopurinol or febuxostat. (Figure)Figure 1Conclusion:Initiation of febuxostat and allopurinol was significantly associated with acute myocardial infarction, cerebral infarction, and cerebral hemorrhage. Considering that allopurinol and febuxostat usually are initiated a few weeks after a acute gout attack. Acute gout attack and/or fluctuation of uric acid level might be significantly associated with cardiovascular event. Some of cardiovascular events might be cardiovascular gout attack.References:[1]Ghang B, Ahn SM, Kim J, Kim YG, Lee CK, Yoo B. Abstract (sommario):
The Affaire des Fiches and the Freemasons of the Grand Orient of France in Lower Normandy ; Since the Dreyfus Affair and especially under the ministry of “Republican Defence” led by Waldeck-Rousseau in 1899, the Freemasons of the Grand Orient of France (GODF) got into the habit of writing to the Order’s Council to denounce the anti-Republican attitudes of various army officers. When General André was appointed Minister of War in May 1900, with the goal of converting the army to republicanism, it was entirely natural that he turned discreetly to a few Freemasons all across France to help him build up a card-index system that noted army officers’ pro-or anti-republican opinions. This episode is very familiar, on the national level. It went down in history as “The Affaire des Fiches”, after it emerged publicly during an open session of the National Assembly in 1904 and led to the resignation of the Combes government in January 1905. But the role of the Freemasons in all this, at the local level, is much less well known. The study of the archives of the Grand Orient’s masonic lodges in Lower Normandy enables the historian to discover not just the role played by Freemasons in the affair and their supportive stance towards the government in the name of republican defence. It also allows insights as to the attacks that some of them suffered at the hands of the local press. Despite the tide of anti-masonic feeling that succeeded the scandal linked to the Affair, in the following months normal attitudes came to the fore once again with a fresh round of letters to the paperts denouncing officers of supposedly royalist and bonapartist sympathies.

Abstract (sommario):
William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), the prominent Irish poet and dramatist was one of the foremost figures of twentieth-century literature. He was a driving force behind the Irish Revival, and together with lady Gregory and Edward Martyn established the Abby Theatre, and served as its chief playwright during its early years. He was awarded the Noble Prize in literature for his always inspired poetry which in a highly artistic form gave expression to the spirit of a whole nation. The paper aims at analyzing the poet's quest for social freedom and poet's right in the state. The King's Threshold was first performed by the Irish National Theatre Society at the Molesworth Hall, in Dublin on 7 October, 1903. It is founded upon a Midieval-Irish story of the demands of the poets at the court of King Guaire at Gort, Co. Galway; it was also influenced by Edwin Ellis's play Sancan the bard (1905) which was published ten years earlier, by Edwin Ellis.

Abstract On 31st of December 1895 Gyula Wlassics (1852-1937), minister of religion and education, published his Decree No 72 039, which allowed women to study medical science, pharmacy and humanities at universities. In Kolozsvár Gizella Kárpáti was the first woman who registered at the Faculty of Medicine of Ferenc József University. Gizella Kárpáti was born in Kolozsvár on 3rd August 1884. After finishing secondary school in June 1902, in the autumn of the same year she registered at the Faculty of Medicine. The marks she got at the university examinations in the following 10 semesters proved that she could cope with her task. In the years spent at the university she met medical student József Szabó (born in 1882) whom she married later. They both started their medical career at Károly Lechner’s Neuro-Psychiatry Institute. From 1909 Gizella Kárpáti was a payed assistant, from 1911 she became assistant lecturer. Her husband became an assistant lecturer from the year 1908, then he was appointed lecturer and then honorary lecturer. Meanwhile he had to go to the front where he was followed by his wife. In 1919, after the professors of the university refused the act of swearing the oath of allegiance, they both made their escape from Kolozsvár together with the greater part of their fellow professors. After a short time they settled in Szeged, where József Szabó was appointed university professor. Here he published his book „Elmekórtan” in 1925. In the 1927-28 academic year he became dean, then vice-dean of the Faculty of Medicine, but in the year 1929 he died unexpectedly. In Szeged, Gizella Kárpáti being engaged in bringing up her two children, did not work as a physician. One of her children, Miklós, continued his parents’ profession, and became a physician. Gizella and her children returned to Kolozsvár for a short time, between 1940-1944, then they moved to Budapest and finally they settled in Szeged again. In 1929 József Szabó and in 1953 Gizella Kárpáti were entombed in one of the graves of honour of the Szeged central cemetery.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The year 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the first article on Bose statistics. Bose breathed life into the Planck distribution of radiation by a microscopic derivation (Bose 1924 Z. Phys. 26 178), adding a new insight, namely indistinguishability into the then evolving quantum theory. Einstein recognized the importance of this article and got it published. Using Bose statistics Einstein wrote an article on the theory (Einstein 1924 Sutzungsber. Preuss. Akad. Wiss Phys.-Math Kl. 261) of an ideal Bose gas and Bose–Einstein condensation. The groundbreaking discovery of Bose, an unveiling of a secret of quantum mechanics, continues to reverberate after a century. Bose’s paper is considered the fourth important paper in old quantum theory, following Planck’s (1900) article (Planck 1900 Verh. Disch Phys. Ges. 2 202), Einstein’s (1905) photoelectric effect (Einstein 1905 Ann. Phys., Lpz. 17 132) and Bohr’s model (1913) of the atom (Bohr 1913 London, Edinburgh Dublin Phil. Mag. J. Sci. 26 1). Dirac (1926 Proc. R. Soc. A 112 661) coined the name boson for one of the two families of indistinguishable particles, the other family being fermion. The edifice of modern quantum field theory, many-body quantum theory, quantum-information and quantum-computing are built on bosons, fermions and anyons. The ever-blooming quantum garden of bosons has photons, gluons, W-bosons, mesons, Higgs-bosons, gravitons, phonons, magnons, excitons, plasmons, polaritons and so on. We present a brief historical account of Bose’s life and his discovery, followed by a bird’s eye view of the impacts of bosons in modern science and technology: from Bose’s distribution of 3-degree background radiation reaching us in the form of cosmic microwave background from the big bang era to boson sampling, a novel quantum computing method. Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the role of the Trans-Siberian Railway in the freight supplying of the Russian Far East in 1903–1913 (since the commissioning of its last section through Manchuria along the CER). Methodologically, the article is based on a comparison of various sources: customs, port, railway statistics, reports of the Dobrovolny flot (Voluntary Fleet), etc. It is concluded that the sources do generally provide a possibility to conduct a study in the period under review, and it can be based on different tables from the foreign trade yearbooks and railway statistics on transportation to the Ussuri railroad. The statistics are considered in two ways: 1) "import - transportation from Russia" and "by sea - by the railroad". This allows us to draw conclusions about where the goods mainly came from and how they got to the local market. Comparative statistics are built for the most important categories of goods: cereals, sugar, fuel, timber, metals, textile, etc. A comparison of the freight transportation by the railroad and by sea showed that, at least until 1909, the railroad supply was not significant, but began to grow later, when the railway transportation to the region helped to reduce the share of imports, especially in terms of supplying textiles and some categories of metal goods.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: This paper focuses on the peculiar model that the Italian central gov-ernment adopted in 1903-1904 to directly manage public services. Aim of the work: The aim of this work is to demonstrate how accounting and ac-countability practices introduced by the Italian central government, functioning as representational and translational technologies of government, shaped the archi-tecture of the so-called "administered decentralization". Methodological approach: This paper is based on an in-depth analysis of primary and secondary sources, including the texts of the law and the Royal Decree enact-ed by the Italian central government in addition to the related parliamentary acts. Empirical material is analyzed and interpreted in light of the Foucauldian idea of govern(mentality). Main findings: This paper highlights the role that accounting and accountability practices played in establishing and shaping power relations among central and local governments involved in the direct management of public services. Originality: Contrary to the extant literature, this paper demonstrates how ac-counting and accountability practices contributed to the establishment of a decen-tralized form of government rather than centralized models. Moreover, it explores the municipalization process in a historical period that remains hitherto unex-plored in the accounting literature.

Abstract (sommario):
Dragutin Dj. Tufegdzic (1881-1960), a teacher, priest and writer, was Janko Veselinovic's son-in-law. After graduation from Sabac Grammar School (in 1897) and Teacher Training School in Aleksinac (in 1900), he first found employment as a teacher. In 1906 Tufegdzic married Persida, Janko Veselinovic's daughter, and in 1908 he was ordained priest. He served in Badovinci in Macva District, and beginning in 1936, at St Mark's Church in Belgrade, where he was dean (1941-1954). During 1931 he visited the holy places in Palestine and became a pilgrim (hajji). Tufegdzic was a prolific writer, contributor to Orthodoxy, The Voice of the Church, The Wreath, The Bosnian Fairy, The Wheel Dance, The New Spark (Pravoslavlje, Glas crkve, Venac, Bosanska vila, Kolo, Nova iskra) and other journals, the author of a brochure, two novellas and a short story collection. As the heir to Veselinovic?s manuscript legacy, during his lifetime D. Tufegdzic took meticulous care of his father-in-law?s heritage. In The Wreath during 1913 and 1914 he published four notes from Veselinovic?s life (?Janko and the Operator?, ?Janko and the Animal Doctor?, ?Janko?s Lottery Ticket? and ?Janko Responds to the Sergeant?), and they resemble the notes we present here: ?From Janko?s Childhood?, ?Janko?s Last Christmas?, ?Janko?s Gallantry? and ?Janko?s Last Living Moments?). The manuscripts are preserved in the Intermunicipal Historical Archives in Sabac within the Presents and Purchases Collection. The notes were edited according to their date of origin and their call numbers in the Sabac Archives: ?From Janko?s Childhood?, Belgrade, February 9, 1950, Collection (No. 18), ?Janko?s Last Christmas?, Belgrade, February 9, 1950 (No. 19), ?Janko?s Gallantry?, Belgrade, February 12, 1950 (No. 20), and ?Janko?s Last Living Moments?, Belgrade, February 13, 1950 (No. 21). The notes were written on chequered paper 21x33,5 cm in size. Although Tufegdzic wrote his memoirs of Janko Veselinovic from a considerable time distance, his testimonies can be considered authentic, because he got them directly from Janko?s daughter and his wife Persida.

Abstract (sommario):
Collection of A. Baitursynov "Forty fables", in which the fables of the Russian poet I. Krylova, is one of the most striking works of educational literature of the early twentieth century, a separate spiritual phenomenon in Kazakh spirituality. I. Krylov's fables are widely spread in the Kazakh steppe due to the teaching of subjects of the educational process of Russian-Kazakh schools opened in military fortresses and trading cities, as well as the educational activities of democratic poets and scientists deported to the Kazakh steppes from Central Russia, who were subjected to political repression. The poet's fables arethe basis of the work of such poets-writers as Ybyrai Altynsarin, Abai Kunanbayev, who in the 2nd half of the XIX century spread the ideas of Enlightenment. The author prepared his translation of the collection for publication in 1903, but did not publishit in print for many years due to censorship. One of the first who got acquainted with the handwritten version of the collection "Forty Fables" –A. Bokeikhan. He admired A. Baitursynov's fables as "wonderful poems" and worked hard to publish the collection in print. Thanks to the tireless search of A. Bokeikhan's publishing house, the collection "Forty Fables" was published in St. Petersburg in 1909. The leader of Alash evaluates translated poems as a sublime expression of artistic creativity in the satirical genre.

Abstract (sommario):
Morphostructural characterization can be used to identify unique characteristics in different animal breeds and an essential tool for the identification and classification of these breeds. The objective of this study was to characterize four Indonesian goat breeds based on their morphostructural traits. A total of 315 female goats (does) at 2.5 - 3.5 years of age were used currently and consisted of 28 Boer, 118 Boerka, 141 Kacang and 28 Ettawa cross. Total eleven body measurements and ten body conformations were measured to describe the morphostructure of goats. Two statistical methods of canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were used to differentiate goat breeds. Body measurement and body index were able to discriminate goat breeds with canonical correlation (Function 1) of 0.81 and 0.77, respectively. According to HCA of morphostructural traits, Boerka and Kacang does are classified into similar cluster. Body measurement is better for discriminating goat breeds rather than body conformation.

Abstract (sommario):
In the Military Museum in Belgrade there are two prototypes of military flags. Those flags, according to the regulation of 1904, were never appointed to the Serbian Army. Based on the details on one of the flags, it was determined that the canvas belonged to a flag from the earlier regulation, dating from 1884. It is the canvas of the flag of the 7 th Infantry Regiment called "King Alexander I", which was previously considered destroyed in 1903. Bearing in mind that there are no preserved flags from the period of this regulation, it was concluded that the Military Museum safeguards the only testimony of this flag model, remade in 1904. Flags, made according to the regulation of 1884, were appointed to the Army in 1886, on the Obrenović's holiday "Cveti". The names of the Obrenović Dynasty were inscribed on the canvas, and some of the regiments were named after them. Although they did not take part in the war with Bulgaria in 1885, these flags were presented as war flags in artworks. When the Karadjordjević Dynasty came to power, military flags with names of the Obrenović Dynasty were probably withdrawn or remade, and other flags got new ribbons, with the monogram of the new king. Other elements of the flags were not disputable for the Karadjordjević Dynasty. The regulation on flags was adopted in 1904, but the changes were not drastic, thus it happened that for the creation of a flag prototype, the canvas of the flag from earlier regulation was used. Flags were replaced shortly before the Balkan wars, in 1911. Before that, they had been used for almost seven years under the Obrenović Dynasty, plus eight years under the Karadjordjević Dynasty. Firstly, they were celebrated as the symbols of the Serbian Royal Army, and since 1904 they were a temporary solution until the definition of flag symbols that would have wider mobilization potential. Not crowned with war glory and being witnesses of politically unstable period, their lives after 1911 were not considered a significant testimony of the military history

Abstract (sommario):
The study was undertaken in Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia laying between Baltic and Adriatic seas on 610 402 km2. Mycobacterium bovis infection was diagnosed in 70 animals belonging to 17 species other than cattle. The set of wild animals comprised 12 European bison (Bison bonasus), one red deer (Cervus elaphus), five wild boars (Sus scrofa), and one European wild goat (Capra aegagrus) bred in a game park. Further positive animals included two farmed red deer (Cervus elaphus) and one bactrian camel (Camelus ferus) owned by a circus. The infection was also demonstrated in 18 domestic animals belonging to 3 species living on farms where bovine tuberculosis was diagnosed in cattle. This set included 12 domestic pigs (Sus scrofa f. domestica), two domestic sheep (Ovis ammon f. aries), and four dogs (Canis lupus f. familiaris). The set of animals bred in zoological gardens consisted of 30 animals belonging to 9 species as follows: three bison (Bison bison), four tapirs (Tapirus terrestris), one cassowary (Casuarius casuarius – isolate identified by the biological assay in guinea pigs only), eight sitatungas (Tragelaphus spekei), three elands (Taurotragus oryx), one gnu (Connochaetes taurinus), eight reticulated giraffes (Giraffa cameloparadlis reticulata), one puma (Puma concolor), and one Vietnamese pot-bellied pig (Sus bucculentus). Although, considering the population sizes, absolute numbers of the infected individuals are rather low, wild animals or such animals bred in captivity should be regarded as possible reservoirs of the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis. Tests for bovine tuberculosis are therefore necessary before transportation of all wild animals. Any lesion arousing suspicion of tuberculosis found on necropsy of wild animals must be laboratory examined for the presence of mycobacteria.

Abstract (sommario):
Why do economic crises sometimes lead to democratic breakdown and sometimes not? To answer this question, we bring in a new conditioning factor. We propose that bureaucracies of higher quality – implying more competent, efficient and autonomous employees – to a greater extent shield the masses from impoverishment and unjust distribution of resources. This dampens anti-regime mass mobilization, which decreases elite incentives and opportunities for toppling the democratic regime. Statistical analyses of democracies globally from 1903 to 2010 corroborate that the impact of economic crises on the risk of democratic breakdown is suppressed when democracies have a bureaucracy of higher quality. The results are robust to alternative model specifications, including a battery of ‘good governance’ indicators. The effect of bureaucratic quality is not driven by bureaucracies’ ability to hinder crisis onset or shorten crisis duration but rather their ability to decrease domestic upheavals during crises.

Abstract (sommario):
Irodion Evdoshvili’s life and literary works were complex, fascinating and contradictory. His first poem appeared in the newspaper “Kvali” in 1893 and since 1895 he was regularly published in literary magazine “Iberia” edited by Ilia Chavchavadze. The poet was acknowledged as a brave freedom-loving singer, who felt deeply for the suffering of the oppressed and tried to make his poetic word to be a beacon for men, a guide for liberation. Evdoshvili thereby not only echoed Ilia’s concept, but also expanded and strengthened it. This was also dictated by the voice of the time, the epoch. Irodion Evdoshvili began his literary activity in the early years of the twenties century, at a time when class tensions were at their peak, and the Social Democratic Party, a generation known as Mesame Dasi (third group) entered the arena of political struggle. His poems full of passionate pathos were sung and recited everywhere during the fiery days of the 1905 revolution: on the tribunes, on the barricades... Evdoshvili’s poem “To the Friends” (1895) especially stood out for its appeal to self-sacrifice in the name of freedom. It seemed well suited for the 1990s, capturing the revolutionary spirit of the time. This pathos distinguishes his poems “Song”, “To My Friends”, “Amirani”, “Fight Song” and others. Irodion Evdoshvili was arrested in 1909 and exiled to Vologda prison for three years, where he fell ill with tuberculosis. The poet expresses the sadness of separation from his homeland in the poem “Farewell to the Exile”, which is classified as a piece of poetrybelonging to the “Valletta” genre in Europe. Poems written on a marine theme are fascinating in Irodion Evdoshvili’s poetry. Georgian poetry of the early years of the twentieth century was not as rich in this sense. Evdoshvili’s poem “Georgian Mother” which addresses the theme of the First World War is also noteworthy. It is hard to find thematically similar poems in Georgian poetry. Many were frustrated by the 1905 revolution’s failure, the carnage, the tactics of battle, and the questionable direction of the revolutionary doctrine, particularly Irodion Evdoshvili.Things got worse with IIia Chavchavadze’s assassination, which was clearly inspired by the Social Democrats. For Evdoshvili, the murder of Ilia became a source of sadness and disappointment. This is the beginning of the most challenging creative period for Evdoshvili – awareness and revaluation of reality, which is vividly expressed in his poem “Diary” (1909). However, in this regard, especially important is the postcard secretly sent to Sandro Shanshiashvili from exile, in which he expresses the bitter mental pain of about the murder of Ilia and blames the Social Democrats for this. “This bullet hit me like a mournful sadness,” he wrote to his friend. Evdoshvili did not swing off the road which he had chosen, but in relation to the Social-Democrats, he clearly revised his ideology, and the “enthusiastic tribune” toward the end of his life suffered “mourning sadness.”

Abstract (sommario):
The principles that represent the basics of the work of the high voltage and high frequency generator with oscillating circuits will be discussed. Until 1891, Tesla made and used mechanical generators with a large number of extruded poles for the frequencies up to about 20 kHz. The first electric generators based on a new principle of a weakly coupled oscillatory circuits he used for the wireless signal transmission, for the study of the discharges in vacuum tubes, the wireless energy transmission, for the production of the cathode rays, that is x-rays and other experiments. Aiming to transfer the signals and the energy to any point of the surface of the Earth, in the late of 19th century, he had discovered and later patented a new type of high frequency generator called a magnifying transmitter. He used it to examine the propagation of electromagnetic waves over the surface of the Earth in experiments in Colorado Springs in the period 1899-1900. Tesla observed the formation of standing electromagnetic waves on the surface of the Earth by measuring radiated electric field from distant lightning thunderstorm. He got the idea to generate the similar radiation to produce the standing waves. On the one hand, signal transmission, i.e. communication at great distances would be possible and on the other hand, with more powerful and with at least three magnifying transmitters the wireless transmission of energy without conductors at any point of the Earth surface could also be achieved. The discovery of the standing waves on the surface of the Earth and the invention of the magnifying transmitter he claimed his greatest inventions. Less than two years later, at the end of 1901, he designed and started to build a much stronger magnifying transmitter on Long Island near New York City (the Wardenclyffe tower) wishing to become a world telecommunication center. During the tower construction, he elaborated the plans for an even stronger transmitter based on new principles. Due to lack of the funds Tesla was forced to sell or to return the devices and apparatus, he gathered in the Wardenclyffe tower facility, which intended to use to operate the tower. He left the tower in 1907 and since then he was mainly engaged in inventions that were not directly related to the electrical engineering. The unfinished magnifying transmitter on Long Island was demolished in June 1917 by the American government.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Zsigmond Purjesz (1846–1918) was born at Szentes (Hungary), and he became MD at Budapest in 1870. In 1880 he applied for and won by competition the professor’s chair of Internal Medicine at Cluj/Kolozsvár University. He taught there for three decades, and founded a medical school. In 1911 he retired and moved to Budapest. According to his wish, he was buried at Kolozsvár. The first part of our study presents the preliminaries of Purjesz’s appointment to Kolozsvár, based on the documents of the Kolozsvár Medical Faculty kept in the State Archives at Marosvásárhely/Târgu Mureş. Endre Takács from Budapest and Ignác Büchler from Kolozsvár were the other two applicants. A board of three university professors proposed Purjesz on the first, Takács on the second and Büchler on the third place to be appointed as professor. On ministerial proposal the king decided to appoint Purjesz on the 2nd of May, 1880. In the second part of the study we take into account the recognitions and decorations Purjesz got. In 1893 for his activity during the cholera epidemic he was awarded with the Iron-Crown Order, 3rd class. In 1901 he got the title of Court councilor, which implied the form of address “Right Honorable”. In 1906 at the 25th anniversary of his professorship his students and colleagues compiled a memorial volume dedicated to him. In 1910 the Royal City of Kolozsvár declared him Honorary Citizen. Following his retirement his bust made by György Vastagh was unveiled at the courtyard of the hospital. In 1911, the king recognizing his healing and teaching activity raised him to the rank of Hungarian nobility.

Abstract (sommario):
The article reconstructs N. P. Agafonov’s life story. It aims at determining the relationship between the individual and the social in a person’s biographical trajectory, analyzing ego-transformation process in a specific historical context. The research methodology involves the use of autobiographical narrative, formed in the process of investigative actions, carried out by the organs of OGPU–NKVD in 1929 and 1937. N. P. Agafonov’s fate is of special interest for historians because during a third of a century he changed his identity three times: at the beginning of the century N. P. Agafonov realized himself as a social democrat, an active participant of the revolutionary underground in St. Petersburg and Perm in 1905–1907. After its defeat, he chose a musical and dramatic career. During the Civil War, he got a haircut as a monk. In the pre-Soviet era, Agafonov behaves like a conformist, whose inner evolution is congenial to the changes taking place in the social circle of democratic youth. The turbulent nature of the events of the Civil War does not allow him to make an artistically reasonable and socially conditioned choice. During the Soviet regime he denounced the collective farm system as a hieromonk, called on parishioners to be strong in faith and expressed hope for the return of the good old times, for which he was subjected to repression by the punitive authorities.

Abstract (sommario):
Existing accounts of the early history of Alzheimer’s disease have focused on Alois Alzheimer’s (1864–1915) publications of two ‘peculiar cases’ of middle-aged patients who showed symptoms associated with senile dementia, and Emil Kraepelin’s (1856–1926) discussion of these and a few other cases under the newly introduced name of ‘Alzheimer’s disease’ in his Textbook of Psychiatry. This article questions the underpinnings of these accounts that rely mainly on publications and describe ‘presenility’ as a defining characteristic of the disease. Drawing on archival research in the Munich psychiatric clinic, in which Alzheimer and Kraepelin practised, this article looks at the use of the category as a diagnostic label in practice. It argues that the first cases only got their exemplary status as key referents of Alzheimer’s disease in later readings of the original publications. In the 1900s, the published cases rather functioned as material to think about the limits of the category of senile dementia. The examination of paper technologies in the Munich psychiatric clinic reveals that the use of the clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease was not limited to patients of a certain age and did not exclude ‘senile’ cases. Moreover, the archival records reflect that many diagnoses of Alzheimer’s disease were noted in the medical records as suspicions rather than conclusions. Against this background, the article argues that in theory and practice, Alzheimer’s disease was not treated as a well-defined disease entity in the Munich clinic, but as an exploratory category for the clinical and histopathological investigation of varieties of organic brain diseases.

Abstract (sommario):
In recent decades, the construction of reservoirs (Small Hydroelectric Centrals and Hydroelectric Power Plants) in hydrographic basins has caused several changes in the landscape, making it necessary to evaluate the synergistic and cumulative effects resulting from the environmental impacts caused by the set of hydroelectric projects. Changes in natural components can result in a loss of system functionality and disruption of its state of balance, which can be assessed through environmental fragility. In this sense, the present work aimed to identify and evaluate the areas with the highest and lowest degree of Potential Fragility and Emerging Fragility, in a delimitation of the influence area of the Espora Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) located on the border of the municipalities of Serranópolis and Aporé/GO, Brazil . The methodological procedure adopted is that of environmental fragility through the relationship between soil factors, declivity, geology/geomorphology, precipitation and land use. As a result, the predominance of Laterite, sandy and medium texture soils was detected in lands that went from flat to wavy, occupied by extensive pastures and monoculture. The study area was classified for potential fragility in 3.1% - very low, 46.8% - low, 49.5% - average and 0.6 as high potential fragility based on the relationship of soil, slope and climate factors. However, the emerging fragility showed that the use of land had a significant impact on the rates, mainly in agricultural areas, increasing the fragility, characterized in 19.9 - low, 42.4% - average, 17.6 - high fragility. It was noted also that very low emergent fragility increased due to the presence of vegetation cover highlighted in the land use map.

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with the latter stage of creative career of one of the top Soviet architects, Ivan Zholtovsky (1867–1959). In the 1950s, this master, who had the status of the patriarch of the Soviet architectural school and the leader of his own workshop-school, was in charge of the designing several large buildings in which monumental classical forms got a strongly marked crisis character. Perhaps the main work in a number of Zholtovsky’s later pieces is the reconstruction of the Central Moscow Hippodrome (1951–1955), which clearly embodied literary centrism as well as some obsession with decorative in late Stalinist architecture. Solving a major urban planning problem, Zholtovsky used a non-standard composition of the building. In such a case he rejected the canons of classicism and renaissance, which he usually sacredly honored. Instead, he apparently considered ensembles of the Hellenistic era as sources of compositional logic, and such a choice is stunningly accurate for a conclusion opus of the grand Stalinist style. Along with that, the building of the hippodrome can be described as a kind of compendium of quotes taken from earlier buildings of Zholtovsky, including the first one – the nearby mansion of the Racing Society (1903–1905). Loquacious pomposity and a tendency to self-repetition are symptoms of decline, but this final phase of style and its specific manifestations in the work of the architect are certainly worth research attention.

Abstract (sommario):
The present work had as objective to verify the genetic diversity among strains of Trypanosoma cruzi isolated in chronic chagasic patients in the Paraná state. Fifty patients with compatible clinical symptoms were selected (cardiopathy, megacolon and/or megaesophagus) and that presented positive serological reaction to T. cruzi. Six strains of the protozoan were isolated in hemoculture and identified by electrophoresis in starch thick gel with aid of 14 isoenzymes (6PGD; G6PD; ME¹; ME²; ICD; PGM; GPI; GOT¹; GOT²; NP¹; NP²; DIA; MPI and FH). The statistical analysis were accomplished by the softwares NTSYs and UPGMA. Eighty-four electromorphs were individualized and four isoenzymes (ICD, GPI, 6PGD, e PGM) showed compatibility for heterozygosis. The phenetic analysis evidenced the hypothesis of constant evolution (genetic distances = 0.0536 to 0.1429, Hardy-Weinberg = 1.0000 to 0.0769 and differentiation for exact tests = 1.0000 to 0.0658). A great intra-specific genetic diversity in T. cruzi was verified in the isolates obtained in humans and it indicates that the clonet II is associated to the domestic cycle of transmission.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is devoted to the history of the study of the Kiev Church of the Savior on Berestovo. The beginning of the fundamental complex architectural and archaeological research of this temple was the work carried out by the outstanding scientist, the founder of the modern method of studying ancient Russian architecture, academician P. P. Pokryshkin during the overhaul and restoration of the church in 1909-1914. However, data on the excavations of P.P. Pokryshkin (diaries, reports, measurements) are absent, since the work was interrupted due to the outbreak of the First World War and all materials, with the exception of photographs, were lost. In this work, on the basis of all available data, including unpublished archival sources with which we got acquainted, a picture of architectural and archaeological research and repair and restoration work of the Church of the Savior on Berestovo in 1909-1914, carried out under the guidance of an employee of the Imperial Archaeological commission, academician of architecture P.P. Pokryshkin. A number of methodological principles and measures are given that were developed and applied by P.P. Pokryshkin at this monument, which made it possible to significantly increase the degree of scientific reliability of the restoration of the monument. As a result of the study, it is shown what role the restoration of this temple played in the formation of the modern initial principles of the scientific restoration of architectural monuments.

Abstract (sommario):
The article focuses on the representation of Ukrainian topics in Slovak journals, mainly in “Hlas” (‘Voice’). This periodical had a subtitle “Mesačník pre literatúru, politika a sociálne otázky” (Monthly on literature, politics and social issues) and appeared in 1898–1904. “Hlas” is considered to be the publishing platform of liberally oriented Slovak youth, who opposed the conservative policy of the Center of National Life in Martin, led by S. H. Vajanský. Just as with other key ideological issues (Czechoslovakism, Russophilism, political activity), Vajanský’s reception and understanding of Ukrainian issues significantly differed from those of the younger generation. ‘Ukrainian theme’ usually got into the journal “Hlas” indirectly, through the links to ‘Slovanský přehled’ (‘Slavic Review’) journal. “Hlas” paid considerable attention to social problems. Such issues as migration, the influence of magyarization on the educational system and level of literacy among ‘rusyns’ were often addressed with a help of statistical data. The periodical provided information on the current challenges of Ukrainian students and some translations of works by Ukrainian authors. For instance, in 1903 “Hlas” published “Nastia” by B. Lepkyi. The translator of the text F. Votruba was among the most active promotors of Ukrainian literature. The references to outstanding Ukrainian cultural figures, such as Taras Shevchenko, Ivan Franko, Volodymyr Hnatiuk, etc., are also worth to mention. A detailed analysis of the content of “Hlas” revealed that the journal gave a low priority to ‘Ukrainian issues’. Most of the relevant information was taken from the other journals. The appearance of original material or translations to a large extent was driven by the personal interests of individual authors.

Abstract (sommario):
The novel by Volodymyr Vynnychenko I want! (1915) was, on one hand, his literary answer to the discussion on the national question in Ukrainian society, and, on the other, it was his reaction to the accusations of him being a renegade resulting from his shift towards Russian literature. In 1907-1908, after the publication of his dramas and novels which were impregnated with the idea of “being honest with oneself” (it implied that all thoughts, feelings, and acts were to be in harmony), his works could be more easily published in Russian than in Ukrainian. This situation was taken by his compatriots as a betrayal against his native language and the national cause. In the novel I want! the problem of language identity is directly linked with national identity. In the beginning of the novel the main character, poet Andrey Halepa, despite being ethnic Ukrainian, spoke, thought, and wrote poems in Russian, and consequently his personality was ruined and his actions lacked motivation. It seems that after his unsuccessful suicide attempt and under the influence of a “conscious” Ukrainian, Halepa got in touch with his national identity and developed a life goal (the “revival” of the Ukrainian nation and the building of a free-labour enterprise). However, in the novel, national identity turns out to be incomplete without language identity. Halepa spoke Ukrainian with mistakes, had difficulty choosing suitable words, and discovered with surprise the meaning of some Ukrainian words from his former Russian friends. The open finale emphasises the irony of the discourse around a fast national “revival” without struggle and effort, and which only required someone’s will.

Abstract (sommario):
Summary When mention is made of Brazil in connection with American linguistics, it usually amounts to a reference to the Linguistic Circle of New York, where Roman Jakobson (1896–1982) and Claude Lévi-Strauss (b.1908), who had come from Brazil where he had done ethnological work, met and exchanged ideas. This singular event has cast a shadow on other contacts between Brazil and American linguistics, of which, the one between Jakobson and the Brazilian linguist Joaquim Mattoso Câmara (1904–1970) was much more consequential, at least as far as the implementation of structural linguistics in Brazil and in South America generally during the 1950s and the 1960s is concerned. Mattoso Câmara came to the United States and spent most of his time in New York City (September 1943 till April 1944), where he got exposure to Praguean type structuralism, notably through Jakobson’s lectures he attended at Columbia University and at the École Libre of New York, which had been established by European refugees at the time. He also participated in the first meetings of the Linguistic Circle of New York in 1943 as one of its co-founders. Following his return to Rio de Janeiro, Mattoso Câmara proposed, in 1949, as his doctoral thesis a phonemic description of Brazilian Portuguese. The work was published a few years later, in 1953. His most influential work, Princípios de Lingüística Gerai, first published in 1954, had two more revised and updated editions (1958, 1967) and served to introduce several generations of Brazilian as well as other South American students to structural linguistics during the 1950s and 1960s.
