Fleming, Gabriel Catherine. "Rival goals and values in administrative review: a study of migration decision making". University of Sydney. Law, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/839.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Some form of administrative review of executive action is accepted in the common law world for the reason that it serves certain basic values and goals. This study draws on political, legal and management theory in considering the values that underlie administrative review. It is primarily concerned with the role of tribunal review. A full range of values are considered, including fairness, justice, consistency, rationality, dignity, respect, accessibility, equity, efficiency and economy. Some are seen as fundamental to the administrative review system while others have different purposes. There is general agreement on many of the values and goals of administrative review. In their practical application however, values compete, overlap and evolve in accordance with economic, social, political and legal change. There are value tensions in, for instance, the role of independent tribunals as a check on the power of the executive while they are also within the executive, in the extent of the obligation on administrative tribunals to apply government policy and in the setting of proper limits of judicial review. There is continuing tension in demands for individual dignity and rights to fair treatment on the one hand and notions of the 'public interest' on the other. This thesis argues that the provision of tribunal review of administrative decisions is increasingly ideologically driven and focussed on 'functional' or 'management' values. At times these have trumped other values in decisions about entitlements to procedural fairness, access to review, effectiveness in public administration and the achievement of the 'correct and preferable' decision in the instant case. The focus of this thesis is a case study of migration decision-making. The importance of this area of study is evident in the potentially devastating consequences that migration decisions can have for individuals and families. In the context of Australia's history of inadequate and racially based migration policies, independent administrative review provides security against arbitrariness and discrimination in decision-making. An analysis of administrative review of decisions made under the Migration Act 1958 (Cth) by the Migration Review Tribunal, and its predecessor the Immigration Review Tribunal, illustrates the claim that values, in their application, have real, practical and local importance. Issues of tribunal independence and accountability, the normative goal of review and procedural justice are considered in depth. It is argued that where compromises are made in administrative review, underlying values should be revealed so that their practical consequences may be better understood. The need to articulate and analyze these issues has never been greater. The Australian administrative review system is in a period of change analogous to that of the introduction of the 'new' administrative law in the 1970s. If tribunals are to continue to play an effective role then it is important to think clearly about how they can, in practice, embody the right mix of administrative law values.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the current study is to evaluate to determine whether or not two components of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, committed actions and values, would have an impact on decreasing potential academic procrastination and increasing minutes work engagement (Hayes et al., 2001). Using a concurrent multiple baseline design, three participants recorded schoolwork activity in minutes throughout the study. The two interventions consisted of one phase where participants identified and acted in accordance with their personal values. The second intervention participants identified, created and applied S.M.A.R.T. goals to their daily lives (Muñoz-Olano & Hurtado-Parrado, 2017). Two participants had recorded an increase in minutes worked daily (Covington, 2000). Implications of these results and future research is discussed. Md-Zain, Ali-Yusob. "Quality of worklife and organisational commitment : a study of non-supervisory employees in Malaysian organisations". Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 1996. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=21511.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Organisational commitment has been suggested as a function of the degree of integration and congruence of individual and organisational goals and values. The more employees can satisfy their needs through work, the more they will be committed to an organisation. The organisational conditions that influence such need satisfaction are generally known as quality of worklife (QWL). The purpose of the study was to examine the relative importance and perceived presence of factors associated with QWL, their relationships with organisational commitment (OC), and demographic patterns of their relationships for nonsupervisory employees in Malaysia. Underlying questions explored were the crosscultural universality of theories of QWL and OC and their utility for management policy and action. The research instrument employed was a survey questionnaire in the Malaysian language based on Western models of QWL and OC and using Likert scaling. Usable responses were obtained from 672 employees in 671 organisations. Statistical analysis was carried out using factor analysis, t-test, analysis of variance and multiple regressions. The Western model and measures of affective, normative and continuance commitment were generally supported, but two sub-factors emerged for continuance commitment relating to cost of leaving and lack of alternatives. The collectivist nature of Malaysian culture emerged as an important determinant of QWL and, in turn, OC. The most important QWL factors were workplace integration, work environmenta nd supervision. The first two of these were perceived as those most present. Different demographic relationships emerged between affective, normative and continuance commitment and QWL. Indicators for changing management policies and action to improve QWL and hence OC among non-supervisory employees in Malaysia concern work environment, workplace integration and the social relevance of work. The equity of pay and benefits, though itself an unimportant QWL factor, was also related to affective commitment.

Tran, Ngoc Xuan. "How Teachers Support Students' Mastery Gaol Orientations in Vietnamese Classrooms: The Significance of Relatedness". Thesis, Griffith University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/366772.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Relatedness is a basic psychological need that, when satisfied, facilitates well-being and results in higher motivation and achievement (Ryan & Deci, 2000a). In societies such as Vietnam, where individuals are influenced by Confucian cultural values that emphasise interpersonal relationships, relatedness with significant others is considered an important need for student academic motivation (Bao & Lam, 2008; Chong, Huan, Quek, Yeo, & Ang, 2010). In Vietnamese classrooms, where teachers are viewed as parents who are responsible for the development of students’ knowledge and moral behaviour, student need for relatedness to teachers is considerable. However, few studies have explored the importance of the influence of teacher-student relatedness on Vietnamese students’ learning motivation, especially in settings where student-centered models are implemented with the aim of improving student competence and skill mastery.

Abstract (sommario):
Navajo school students, it is believed, underachieve at school in terms of school attendance, dropout rates, and standardized performance tests. Among the many reasons proposed to explain the persistent school underachievement is that school culture is largely based on individualism, interpersonal competition, and other Western norms and values. These, it is argued, are an anathema to Native Americans. Hence, school culture may predispose many Navajo High School students to failure. To test this belief I constructed a model of school achievement motivation drawn from Western conceptualizations of achievement motivation described Navajo High School students achievement motivation. Using confirmatory factor analyses tests of equivalency were conducted that contrasted non-traditional Navajo students and females with near traditional Navajo students and males. Using structural equation modeling, I examined the relations of the language, location, and gender variables on the achievement goal factors, mediated by school measures of achievement, ability beliefs, social goals and achievement goals. I concluded that non-traditional and near traditional Navajo students are more similar than dissimilar. Clearly this raises concerns regarding the making of policy based on assumptions regarding presumed differences between non-traditional and near traditional Navajo High School students. I also concluded that, school achievement measures, the ability beliefs, and the social approval and social concern goals are important factors that influence the school achievement goals Navajo students emphasize. This has implications for the manner in which schools and teachers emphasize these factors in classrooms.

Coinciding with the upsurgence of the Black Lives Matter Movement in the Summer of 2020, collegiate and professional sports teams have exhibited increased involvement in social issues. Existing research primarily analyzes the platform and visibility that athletes have to promote social agendas, but there is a gap in knowledge regarding how a sports team forms a collective identity around a social movement. This study seeks to fill this gap in research by utilizing qualitative surveying and interviewing to examine how Boston College athletes engage in the Black Lives Matter Movement. Processes of grounded theory and inductive analysis are used to understand how the Boston College Women’s Rowing Team values contribute to the team’s shared mental model to fulfill the conditions of social movement emergence and further promote team value adoption and team success. Evaluation of student-athletes across different Boston College teams through this study also offers insights to the controversy over sports teams engaging in social issues

Abstract (sommario):
As an arms-exporting state, Sweden has certain legal responsibilities to ensure that licences authorizing arms exports are in line with existing laws, policies and guidelines. Apart from that, the government has an ethical responsibility to ensure that arms are not exported to countries where they are used to oppress the population and commit human rights abuses. Despite this, questionable and unethical deals are authorized without any accountability being demanded. The main purpose of the essay is to perform a critical ethical analysis of the Swedish arms trade policy, to develop the application of policies in relation to arms trade, and to suggest additional criteria to make this trade more ethically justifiable. Among other things, it is asked whether different goals and principles come into conflict, and if they do, does the “right” goal or principle win? Also, which criteria are necessary to make arms trade ethically justifiable? The essay outlines some additional criteria which could be useful in making the trade ethically justifiable and performs a text analysis on selected documents relating to the arms trade in order to delineate where the inherent issues lie. The conclusion reached is that the different policies, mostly, harmonize, although security and human rights concerns sometimes conflict, which leads to potential serious outcomes. The existing legal and policy framework provides for a robust foundation, although inadequate as contentious arms exports are authorized. However, the imposition of the suggested criteria, especially criteria pertaining to establishing responsibility and accountability in the existing structures, should prove useful.

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis a new explanation is developed as to how corporations achieve specific effectiveness criteria through the harmonization of their financial and moral based goals. Findings are drawn from simultaneous case studies conducted over three years in two companies, one public and private. Based on the position that corporations are moral agents, a theoretical framework is developed and validated, which explains how effectiveness and goals are interrelated but separate constructs dependent on the common good of the organisation for their achievement. The thesis therefore provides a basis to understand how a corporation must not only do well but do good to be sustainable in modern society.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to find the organizational practices in place for the performance evaluation of temporary employees and how that varies from permanent employees. Method – The study takes an inductive and interpretive approach to find out the unknown practices. The study is conducted over 7 respondents from different organizations split between recruitment agencies and client organizations and represents practices maintained by both set of industries. Findings – The study identifies low standardization in performance evaluation and discusses the variance from literature over the subject matter. Also a model is drawn based on the amalgamation of literary review and empirical results. Implications – The study presents variance in the processes for temporary employees and the prime areas where the variance occurs. For the organizations to have fair and just performance management system and for equality towards temporary employees, these issues must be addressed. Limitations – Cultural practices are not taken into consideration and literature might be based on different cultural practices than the respondents country and for a wholesome study, more respondents might be needed.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the end of the Cold War, Sweden’s security strategy has undergone radical changes. Due to recent years deteriorated security situation in Europe, the debate on Swedish NATO-membership has become more prominent. Previous research has mostly focused on the practical/military implications of the choice of security strategy whereas the knowledge about the political ideas and goals that are behind the choice of security strategy is largely unknow. Based on a qualitative approach, this thesis has studied how the Swedish foreign and security policy debate has changed between 1989–2018. Targeting the Social Democratic party, the Moderate Party, the Centre party and the Liberals, this thesis has described and analyzed these parties’ fundamental goals/values and world views from the perspectives of realism and liberalism. This study finds that there has been several changes both in world views and fundamental goals/values, where the earlier period in this study was more influenced by realism, to where liberalism started to become more prominent in the debate from the late 1990s until 2018, although realism has in some degree come back during recent years.

Abstract (sommario):
The overarching question of this dissertation is in what ways complementary currencies (CC) systems can contribute to environmental sustainability from an institutional and ecological economics perspective. More particularly, the research focuses on household energy consumption, as it is an important target for policy makers in the EU. The first three chapters focus on the emerging trend of using CC systems as top-down instruments for environmental sustainability. Our findings relate to developing a taxonomy of these systems, designing new top-down CC systems adapted to the context of energy savings in the household sector, exploring the influence of these new systems on the quality of motivation in the light of Self-Determination Theory and investigating the acceptability and effectiveness of these systems. In the fourth and last chapter of this dissertation, we approach our research question from a bottom-up angle and, using an inductive methodology, we explore how community currencies could act as an organising instrument capable of helping cohousing communities achieve their energy-efficiency potential. Finally, we conclude by highlighting our contributions regarding the structure and important features of these systems, how they can be used in an ecological economics paradigm, and how they can set rules for collective action in an institutional perspective.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Statistics on the professional integration of disabled people in society suggest that this category of population is particularly vulnerable. The requirements for this category of workers, perceived as wanting in productivity and autonomy, far exceed what is expected of a valid candidate, even when it comes to positions where disability is not an objective barrier (Louvet, 2007). However, disabled people are credited with greater personal qualities than valid workers: in particular, they tend to be considered as more "deserving" (Louvet, Rohmer, & Dubois, 2009). To sum up, attitudes and behaviours towards people with disabilities range from benevolent attitudes about their "personal qualities" to very negative prejudices about their actual skills. In this respect, the stereotype can be considered as ambivalent. The consequences of this ambivalence are at the heart of this doctoral work. The main aim of this PhD is to show that this image of disability widely impacts the self-presentation strategies of disabled people in a recruitment context and also their actual performance. It is also shown that preliminary briefing of valid individuals regarding the social category of disability could lead to an effect of assimilation, that is to say behaviours corresponding to the existing stereotypes. In a theoretical perspective, this PhD tries to demonstrate the interest of decomposing social utility, so as to apply it to this field of study but also to that of motivation. Overall, results suggest that people with disabilities may focus essentially on producing efforts and mastering tasks, and that their performance consequently differs qualitatively from that of valid persons

Abstract (sommario):
This study analyzes and discusses sustainability reporting at Arlacompany which is one of the largest organic dairy producer in the world. Geographically its operations span across Europe, North America, North and West Africa and Asia. This study evaluates the company’s communication of its shared value creation and how it contributes towards the accomplishment of the Sustainable Development Goals. In order to do so, it analyzes two of the company’s annual Corporate Social Responsibility reports (2016 and 2019). A theoretical framework, combining Corporate Social Responsibility, Creating Shared Value, Triple Bottom Line and Legitimacy Theory is synthesized and applied to the subject matter. This research is a holistic single-case study, employing continuous literature review and a qualitative content analysis. The results of the research are presented discussing the merits and shortcomings of the company’s sustainability communication practices. It finds that Arla’ssustainability communication is heavily based on societal and environmental topics. Its main strategies of shared value creation operationalize the expansion and strengthening of markets and product quality assurance. The study also concludes that Arlaavoids the communication of sensitive issues such as animal welfare or greenhouse gas emissions emerging from farms. Finally, the study advocates for the benefits of failure reporting, both in terms of compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals and sustainability practices, arguing that this might lead to greater legitimacy and possible support from other stakeholders.

Abstract (sommario):
In today’s dynamic and often unstable business environment, Information technology (IT) and how IT is controlled has become pervasive due to the high dependency of IT within organizations. The IT-investments are increasingly becoming more important within the overall budget for many organizations today and are distributed all over the organizations. This dependency requires the importance of aligning between IT units and how the strategy for business direction can be realized. Thus, the alignment between IT and business is the primary goal of IT. A clear and well-defined structure of what factors affect the organization to ensure control over IT is utterly important. Today, no straightforward structure of factors to ensure successful achievement of IT governance goals within organizations exists. This thesis aims to assess and analyze the importance of IT governance factors to successfully achieve IT governance goals. The survey data gathered from 40 IT governance experts are presented in this thesis. The results show that there exist differences on how factors affect, with factors concerning the boards’ responsibility being the most important and critical factors for successfully achieving IT governance goals. This thesis also identifies and discusses some of the factors that may be less important and hence seldom prioritized within organizations.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of business-IT alignment is to optimise the relation between business and IT in order to maximise the business value of IT. Successful business-IT alignment can be enabled by business processes and e-processes functioning as adaptive mediators between business and IT systems. Business processes are the ways actors work in enterprises and collaborate in value networks, while e-processes support a flexible flow of information between IT systems and business processes. The overall goal of this thesis is to propose methods for business process and e-process design and evaluation for achieving alignment between enterprise goals and IT systems. The methods are based on model-driven approaches, using enterprise and software models. More precisely, the proposed methods can be used for designing models of business processes supporting the fulfilment of enterprise goals in the setting of a value network; for designing models of generic and reusable business processes that support the fulfilment of enterprise goals; for designing models of e-processes that support a flexible alignment of IT systems with business processes; and for evaluating the extent to which business processes are aligned with enterprise goals and IT systems. The result of the thesis can be used to support business and system designers with practical knowledge on how to align business and IT systems in order to create efficient, high-quality, flexible and innovative organisations. The research presented in this thesis has been carried out following the design science paradigm. This paradigm is characterised by the creation of new and innovative artefacts for solving general problems, and the evaluation of their benefits and drawbacks.

Abstract (sommario):
Companies’ entrepreneurial actions entail all sorts of conquences among these ethical consequences. While the media reports on unethical activities and blames companies for those actions, the global market economy, with few exceptions, does not value ethical behavior. Consequently, businesses continue to prioritize the pursuit of profits over the consideration of ethical issues. Research suggests that this situation together with traditionally vertical leadership structures produces conflicts in decision-making processes between profit and ethical value goals. New styles of leadership and decision-making are needed to overcome this conflict. Thus, the aim of this project is to identify the characteristics of shared leadership that are perceived as positively influencing corporate decision-making processes with regards to the integration of ethical considerations. A case study approach is chosen to study the phenomenon in a real-life context. A German small-size company practicing shared leadership funcions as the case study. The report presents a framework to analyze various factors regarding. Empirical data from interviews and on-site observations are analyzed using a framework created based on previous research, highlighting inputs, processes and outputs of the decision-making processes in shared leadership. The findings show that individuals’ personalities, intra-team relations, organizational culture, rules and the use of a decision-making tool aiming at consent are important influencing factors of decision-making in shared leadership.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Software and ICT companies fail due less to technological factors than socioorganizational factors, among which the most common is unrealistic goals and objectives. The socioorganizational factors are present in companies and organizations of all sizes. Organizations need to know whether their goals and strategies are working and whether the strategies are effectively providing a reasonable return on investment for the effort that is being applied, i.e. to understand how valuable they are for the organization. In addition, organizations need to recognize what the risks are in achieving those goals and evaluate their probability. And, when goals are set properly then they have directive and energizing functions, they tend to utilize available resources better and serve as activators of cognitive processes and knowledge sharing cycles. In this dissertation the GQM+Strategies approach was used. The approach was designed to help organizations to align goal-driven measurement schemes, i.e. GQM, with organizational goal hierarchy. The extensions developed in this dissertation (i.e., the solution proposed here) evolve the GQM+Strategies approach by providing an organization with capabilities to: (1) apply the work of value-based software engineering to directly address the return on investment (ROI) of their goals and strategies via evaluation of the costs and benefits of the goals and strategies chosen, (2) calculate a set of earned value metrics that allows organizations to effectively monitor the implementation of the organizational goals and strategies, (3) identify the risks associated with not achieving various sub-goals in a grid by analyzing goal risk exposures and acceptable risk levels, and (4) assess the threats of risky goals on other goals in the grid via evaluation of goal dependencies using the formal goal-strategies-goals models. The GQM+Strategies approach was piloted in four different organizations involving more than 60 participants. The feedback from the participants was used to identify the research questions posed in this dissertation. The research approach (solution development process) adopted the design science framework and utilized analytical and empirical paradigms in different phases of the solution development. The analytical paradigms were used for solution development and evaluation, while empirical paradigms where used for evaluating certain aspects of the solution
Näistä sosio-organisationaalisista tekijöistä yleisin on epärealististen tavoitteiden asettaminen.

Abstract (sommario):

Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become a hot topic in higher education and have undergone rapid growth. More than 800 MOOCs have been offered to the public from more than 200 of the most well known universities in the world, with millions of learners taking them. While many elite universities have developed MOOCs, their motivations have not been entirely clear. This qualitative case study research explores what three early adopter universities, Columbia University, Duke University, and Harvard University, hope to achieve by becoming involved and investing in MOOCs, how they are assessing progress toward goals, and what value proposition they seek as a return on their investment. The findings of this research suggest that the studied universities have several goals in common and a few that differ, and importantly, that several of their goals do not directly align with the public narrative around MOOCs in the press. In particular, while the goals of the studied universities do include expanded access to education, their goals may have even more to do with promoting teaching innovation and providing benefits for their residential education. None of the studied universities were focused on improvements to higher education completion challenges through pursuit of MOOC credit, or the use of MOOCs as a way to control higher education costs—both of which are major elements of the public dialogue on MOOCs. Other goals of the early adopters studied included providing more visibility for some of their educational programs and their faculty, and enabling more evidence-based education research. This study concludes that the value proposition for early adopter universities is the ability to simultaneously pursue the goal of improving on-campus teaching and learning while also promoting the university and its faculty and connecting through educational outreach with the public—all while showing leadership in an emerging higher education learning technology.

On April 20, 2010, an explosion in the rig Deepwater Horizon performing drilling operations on the Macondo Prospect Well, in the Gulf of Mexico, led to the largest oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. Eleven crewmembers lost their lives and around 4.9 million barrels of oil were discharged into the ocean until the continuous subsea blowout of the well was contained in September 19, 2010. Given the magnitude and the complexity of the accident, several safety analyses have been proposed by the international community at different levels of the system involved in the accident. Most of these studies use accident analysis techniques based on chain-of-event models, whose main objective is to identify root-causes. However, while this approach describes physical phenomena accurately, it does not explain the role of organizational and socio-economical factors, human decisions, or design inaccuracies in accidents in complex, adaptive, and tightly coupled systems like Macondo. In response to this need, N. Leveson developed the new accident-analysis technique Causal Analysis Based on System Theory (CAST), based on her model System-Theoretic Accident Model and Processes (STAMP). In STAMP accidents are not treated as chain of failure events, but as complex processes that result from a large variety of causes including component failures and faults, system design errors, unintended and unplanned interactions among system components, human operator errors, flawed management decision-making, inadequate controls and oversight, and poor safety culture. This thesis presents management recommendations based on a CAST analysis of the Macondo Accident. The goal is to help the oil and gas offshore drilling community achieve safer operations and understand the value of systems safety in achieving organizational goals.

Abstract (sommario):
Patient satisfaction is acknowledged as an important outcome measure for aesthetic surgery. However, knowledge of the relationship between psychosocial variables and satisfaction is limited. In the area of bilateral breast reduction (BBR), there has been research showing high satisfaction rates alongside improvements in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and appearance-related quality of life (ARQOL). Furthermore, in other surgical disciplines, achievement of patient self-selected goals has positively correlated with patient satisfaction. This study, therefore, investigates HRQOL, ARQOL and patient goals in relation to satisfaction following BBR surgery. Data was collected from 49 participants over four time-points; two prior to surgery and two post-surgery. The Short-Form 36 health survey measures HRQOL and the Derriford Appearance Scale 24 measures ARQOL. Patient goals were collected using a semi-structured interview and rated out of 100% for achievement post-BBR. The study adopts a single item measure of postsurgery satisfaction, rated from 0 - 100%. Content analysis of patient goals reveals eight categories. High frequencies of 'pain' goals are noted, but there was no significant difference between the frequency of pain compared to clothes, appearance, activity or emotional goals. Importance ratings suggest equal value is given to all goal categories. This appears to contrast with previous research and the dominant discourses surrounding BBR surgery. Consistent with previous findings, HRQOL and ARQOL are shown to improve significantly at 6 - 8 weeks and 3-4 months post-surgery. Multiple regression analyses suggest a possible role for achievement of patient self-selected goals and post-surgery ARQOL for predicting satisfaction at 6 - 8 weeks post-BBR. Methodological difficulties are acknowledged and thus the conclusions provided are tentative. Provisional implications are suggested for audit, clinical and research purposes.

Abstract (sommario):
This master thesis in geography investigates how remote sens- ing can be used in Transnational Corporations (TNC) global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. The study aims to delineate an accurate method in remote sensing to be used to monitor deforestation in global value chains. Research questions asked are 1) What are the current monitoring practises used by TNCs to monitor global value chains? 2) Which is the most user-friendly and accurate remote sensing technique to map deforestation? 3) How can remote sensing successfully be implemented in TNCs CSR-initiatives? The study is approached from two perspectives, building on theories of value chains, and qualitative methods to answer the first research question. While the second question is a method study, investigating how well a spectral approach versus a contextual approach can map deforest- ation in Landsat scenes. The results are compared with Global Forest Watch (GFW), and the highest accuracy were acquired from the WICS (Window Indipendent Context Segmentation) technique. Conclusions includes that remote sensing can be used in CSR initiatives, to establish a baseline level or as a fifth dimen- sion in a score sheet approach. However, inconclusive mapping of value chains are a big hinder today.

Abstract (sommario):
The challenges of developing the information systems (IS) that support modern enterprises are becoming less about engineering and more about people. Many of the technical issues of the past, such as hardware size and power, connectivity, and robust software, are engineering problems that have largely been solved. In the next stage of computing, the human factor will be far more important than it has been in the past: the colors of an interface or the shape of an icon are the engineering problems of the past, and the availability and usefulness of such basic solutions is rapidly coming to a close. A new paradigm is needed that provides a roadmap of higher level conceptions and values, one about humane computing. A part of this older, mechanistic approach are quantitative, economic values whose impact on IS are readily visible and acknowledged within software engineering. However, qualitative values, and in particular consumer preferences, have been researched to a lesser degree, and there has been very little direct application.  To create the next-generation information systems, requirements engineers and systems developers need new methods to capture the real preferences of consumers, conceptualize these abstract concepts, and then relate such preferences to concrete requirements for information systems. To address this problem, this thesis establishes a conceptual link between the preferences of consumers and system requirements by accommodating the variations between them and expressing them via a conceptual model. Modeling such preferences and values so that they can be used as requirements for IS development is the primary contribution of this work. This is accomplished via a design science research paradigm to support the creation of the works’ primary artifact—the Consumer Preference-aware Meta-Model (CPMM). CPMM is intended to improve the alignment between business and information systems by capturing and concretizing the real preferences of consumers and then expressing such preferences via the requirements engineering process, with the eventual output being information systems. CPMM’s development relies on theoretical research contributions within three areas in information systems—Business Strategy, Enterprise Architecture, and Requirements Engineering—whose relationships to consumer values have been under-researched and under-applied. The case studies included in this thesis each demonstrate the significance of consumer preferences to each of these three areas.  In the first, a set of logical mappings between CPMM and a common approach to business strategy (strategy maps/balanced scorecards) is produced. In the second, CPMM provides the conceptual undergirding to process a massive amount of unstructured consumer-generated text to generate system requirements for the airline industry. In the concluding case, an investigation of foreign and domestic students at Swedish universities is structured through CPMM, one that first discovers the requirements for a consumer preference-based online education and then produces feature models for such a software product line-based system. The significance of CPMM as a lens for discovering new concepts and highlighting important information within consumer preference data is clearly seen, and the usefulness of the meta-model is demonstrated by its broad and beneficial applicability within information systems practice and research.

Abstract (sommario):
This case study has been about the attitudes and values of a group of participants in a specific workplace. The aim has been to try and ascertain if the identified attitudes and values of the participants have had any influence on career development. There were 12 participants involved and at the time of this project they were either in permanent part or full time employment with ‘The Company’. ‘The Company’ is a pseudonym given to the business where the participants worked and the setting for this research project. The workplace is situated in a remote location on an industrial work site in New Zealand. Each participant engaged in the research voluntarily. They completed a questionnaire and took part in a semi-structured interview. Confidentiality and anonymity of all participants had been respected and maintained throughout the entire project. Results show that there were three principle influences that could be attributed to the ways that participants perceived the workplace and personal career development. They were workplace values, workplace training, and workplace goals. These attributes are influenced in different ways and hold divergent meaning for individual participants. The most highly rated value, as identified by participants in this project has been variation of tasks undertaken in the workplace. This was not challenged by any of the indicators used to consider opinions and values expressed by participants; education, generational groupings, career type and work streams. Seven of the twelve participants desired promotion within ‘The Company’. The ways that participants hoped to achieve promotion was often unspecified. Participants did not articulate specific planning methods. Future research is recommended such as focusing on how employees can develop career goals that fit with the goals of their workplace.

Abstract (sommario):
In many contexts, belonging to a group impacts the pursuit of one's goals. Research on motivation has shown that both the value that one personally attributes to a goal and the personal expectancy of attainment of that goal predict successful goal-oriented behaviour. Building on expectancy-value theories of motivation, I introduce the notions of collective value and collective expectancy. Two experiments were designed to test: (1) whether collective value and expectancy regarding a goal (in this case, initiating a romantic relationship) could predict goal-oriented behaviour (in this case, leaving contact information to be paired with a partner) and (2) if a collective/personal discrepancy in value or expectancy would lead to poorer affect. Experiment 1 (n = 69) tested the effect of collective and personal values, whereas Experiment 2 (n = 71) tested the effect of collective and personal expectancies. The first hypothesis – which stated that collective value and expectancy would predict goal-oriented behaviour, even when considering personal value and expectancy – was not supported. The second hypothesis, which stated that a collective/personal discrepancy value or expectancy would lead to poorer affect, received support, as participants in discrepant conditions experienced significantly lower positive affect. The contribution of both experiments is discussed, in terms of their implications for research on the academic underperformance of certain minority groups, the social dysfunction that characterizes certain Native communities in Canada and the influence of group-based perceptions on pursuing romantic relationships.

Calnan, Joshua. "DETERMINATION OF EXPLOSIVE ENERGY PARTITION VALUES IN ROCK BLASTING THROUGH SMALL-SCALE TESTING". UKnowledge, 2015. http://uknowledge.uky.edu/mng_etds/24.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Blasting is a critical part of most mining operations. The primary function of blasting is to fragment and move rock. For decades, attempts have been made at increasing the efficiency of blasting to reduce costs and increase production. Most of these attempts involve trial and error techniques that focus on changing a single output. These techniques are costly and time consuming and it has been shown that as one output is optimized other outputs move away from their optimum level. To truly optimize a blasting program, the transfer of explosive energy into individual components must be quantified. Explosive energy is broken down into five primary components: rock fragmentation, heave, ground vibration, air blast, and heat. Fragmentation and heave are considered beneficial components while the remaining are considered waste. Past energy partitioning research has been able to account for less than 30% of a blast’s total explosive energy. The purpose of this dissertation was to account for a greater percentage of the explosive energy available during a blast. These values were determined using measurement techniques not previously applied to energy partitioning research. Four small-scale test series were completed, each designed to isolate individual energy components. Specific energy components measured include borehole chambering, elastic deformation (ground vibration), translational and rotational kinetic energy (heave), and air overpressure (air blast). This research was able to account for 73% of the total explosive energy. Borehole chambering (13%), rotational kinetic energy (25%), translational kinetic energy (5%), and air overpressure (28%) were determined to be the largest components. Prior research efforts have largely ignored rotational kinetic energy and have only been able to offer predictions for the values of borehole chambering and air overpressure energies. This dissertation accounted for a significantly higher percentage of total available explosive energy than previous research efforts using novel measurement techniques. It was shown that borehole chambering, heave, and air blast are the largest energy components in a blast. In addition to quantifying specific energy partitions, a basic goal programming objective function was proposed, incorporating explosive energy partitioning and blasting parameters into a framework that can be used for future energy optimization.

Abstract (sommario):
Shortage of quality feed is the major constraint in livestock production, particularly under smallholder subsistence farmer s conditions in sub-Saharan Africa. Livestock production under smallholder subsistence farmers depends predominantly on communal grazed natural pastures, which are often inadequate in both quantity and quality, particularly during the dry season. In order to improve livestock production in these areas, shortage of feed must be addressed in terms of quantity and quality. Stylosanthes scabra (Vog.) accessions were evaluated for adaptability, agronomic performance, persistency and nutritive value in subtropical climate of Pretoria as potential forage source for ruminant animals. Several experiments (including field trials, laboratory experiment and stall feeding trials) were conducted at Hatfield Experimental Farm, University of Pretoria, South Africa. In the field trial, 15 accessions of Stylosanthes scabra were evaluated for adaptability and agronomic performance. The persistence of Stylosanthes scabra accessions under rain-fed conditions over three years showed their adaptability to the study area. However, three of the accessions, namely 9281, 11595 and 11604, were consistently superior in terms of biomass yield over the three-year period (2012 to 2014). Thus, from the biomass production point of view, these three accessions are recommended for future use as legume forage. Promising accessions identified in terms of adaptability and productive parameters were further evaluated for nutritive value parameters by determining their chemical composition, phenolic compound concentration, in vitro organic matter digestibility and in vitro gas production characteristics. Generally, the adaptable accessions have more than 17% DM crude protein (CP) content with relatively low neutral detergent fibre (NDF) ranging from 29.9 to 70.1% DM and very low total phenols ranging from 5.5 to 11.4 g kg-1 DM, total tannins ranging from 2.4 to 8.4 g kg-1 DM and total condensed tannins ranging from 0.3 to 3.4 g kg-1 DM. Thus, they were highly digestible with the range of 66 to 79%. This indicates that these accessions can be utilized as supplementary forage and nitrogen sources to complement poor-quality forage. Five Stylosanthes scabra, selected from the promising accessions, were in a preference and palatability study using Saanen goats. Generally, the five accessions were acceptable and palatable to goats. However, there was a significant (P < 0.05) difference in terms of intake and preferences. Accession 11604 was the most preferred, while accession 11255 was the least preferred. Five accessions that were used in palatability study were further used to evaluate their effect to poor-quality grass hay when supplemented at two levels (15% and 30%). The response to supplementation was measured by monitoring in vitro ruminal fermentation, associative effects and degradability of NDF. Supplementing poor-quality grass hay with Stylosanthes scabra accessions improved grass hay fermentation. This study showed that 30% supplementation level with accession 11604 led to a positive associative effect with grass hay and also improved NDF degradability. Consequently, this accession was recommended for future use as a forage supplement to poor-quality basal diet. The inclusion of Stylosanthes scabra forages in total mixed rations (TMR) for Saanen goats as a partial replacement of lucerne (alfalfa) forage did not significantly (P > 0.05) affect the nutritive value; nor did it affect the animals performance in terms of intake, nutrient digestibility and nitrogen retention. This means that Stylosanthes scabra can be used to partly replace alfalfa without compromising the nutritive value of the TMR diet. The overall outcome is that accession 11604 is recommended for use as supplementary feed resource. However, further study is required to determine suitable means of integrating this accession in the farming system in order to converts this forage into high-quality animal products (meat, milk, wool, etc).

Abstract (sommario):
In September 2015, the world leaders gathered to endorse 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), demonstrating a paradigm shift for people and the planet build on shared values, principles, and priorities for a common destiny. In the process of consolidating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) consultations with business representatives raised two issues related to the potential success of the goals. The first issue was to better measure and value true performance of business preconditioned by identifying the most significant impact areas. The second issue was concerned with integration of sustainability into core business strategies. Both issues lead back to the proclaimed paradigm shift built on shared values for a sustainable future as demonstrated by the SDGs and demonstrate challenges with implementation of the SDGs. Although comprehensive frameworks to help business integrate the goals have been developed, the complexity and sheer volume of the various targets and indicators hinder many companies from reporting on their performance and contributions. The textile and apparel industry, while endowed with enormous potential related to development of countries has drawn increased attention to its negative impacts along the value chain. The industry is also one of the first to integrate the SDG into their sustainability reports. However, critics point to the fact that simply linking sustainability activities to the SDGs is not enough and cherry-picking the goals that have the easiest business case will be insufficient. Thus, to address this potential discrepancy between communication and action, the aim of this study has been to investigate the perceived value of SDGs integration in sustainability reporting within the apparel industry. Through a critical discourse analysis, the study has reviewed six sustainability report by two Swedish apparel companies, Lindex and Filippa K, from 2015 to 2017. conceptual framework has been developed according to the SDG compass including two variables; communicated motives for SDG integration and methods to measure and report on goal fulfilment. The findings show that both companies are using the SDGs as a communicative tool to point to the conceptual motives which drives the sustainability work. Discursive strategies to frame the companies’ sustainability methods are made by utilizing the concept of “circularity”. The level of SDG integration differs between the companies. Lindex show discursive developments between 2015 to 2015 reflecting extended responsibility with correspondence between communication and action. While Filippa K does not show the same level of discursive maturity in terms of motive, the methods to address the sustainability issues related to circular fashion has accelerated significantly over the years comparatively to Lindex. The lack of communicated methods to address social issues is however evident. The findings further show that there is a correspondence between level of SDG integration and SDG contribution. This study corroborates with previous research arguing that the business world is more complex than something that can be assessed in a black and white dichotomy of hypocrisy versus sincerity and needs a much more sophisticated approach to the gap between promise and performance and that the SDGs have a transformative potential. It also provides insights on how the application of the SDGs can be seen through a spectrum between weak and strong sustainability depending on the maturity of a company’s sustainability management.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was twofold: first, to investigate the effect of grade level on students&rsquo
motivational beliefs (self-efficacy, intrinsic value, mastery goals and performance goals) in science, and second to examine the relationships between students&rsquo
motivational beliefs and their science grades. The Turkish version of the Approaches to Learning Instrument (mastery goals and performance goals) and the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (self-efficacy and intrinsic value) were used as data collection instruments. The Turkish version of the Approaches to Learning Instrument (ALI) was adopted into Turkish and pilot tested with 390 elementary school students. The main study was applied to 900 elementary school students in Grades 6 through 8 from 5 randomly selected schools in Bolu. The data obtained from the measuring instruments were analyzed by using Multivariate Analyses of Variance (MANOVA) and correlation analyses. Results of the analyses revealed that grade level has a significant effect on students&rsquo
motivational beliefs and as grade level increases student motivation in science declines. Accordingly, 6th grade students are found to be more self-efficacious in science and they show more intrinsic interest in science and study science course for the reasons of learning and mastering as well as showing their abilities to others compared to 7th grade and 8th grade students. Concerning the motivational level of 7 and 8 graders, results also showed that 7 graders&rsquo
motivational beliefs are more favorable than 8 graders. Moreover, results revealed significant positive relationships between all motivational belief variables and science grade in all grade levels except for the performance goal orientation. Additionally, significant positive relationships were found among all motivational belief variables.

Ellis-Braithwaite, Richard. "Modelling the instrumental value of software requirements". Thesis, Loughborough University, 2015. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/21803.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Numerous studies have concluded that roughly half of all implemented software requirements are never or rarely used in practice, and that failure to realise expected benefits is a major cause of software project failure. This thesis presents an exploration of these concepts, claims, and causes. It evaluates the literature s proposed solutions to them, and then presents a unified framework that covers additional concerns not previously considered. The value of a requirement is assessed often during the requirements engineering (RE) process, e.g., in requirement prioritisation, release planning, and trade-off analysis. In order to support these activities, and hence to support the decisions that lead to the aforementioned waste, this thesis proposes a framework built on the modelling languages of Goal Oriented Requirements Engineering (GORE), and on the principles of Value Based Software Engineering (VBSE). The framework guides the elicitation of a requirement s value using philosophy and business theory, and aims to quantitatively model chains of instrumental value that are expected to be generated for a system s stakeholders by a proposed software capability. The framework enriches the description of the individual links comprising these chains with descriptions of probabilistic degrees of causation, non-linear dose-response and utility functions, and credibility and confidence. A software tool to support the framework s implementation is presented, employing novel features such as automated visualisation, and information retrieval and machine learning (recommendation system) techniques. These software capabilities provide more than just usability improvements to the framework. For example, they enable visual comprehension of the implications of what-if? questions, and enable re-use of previous models in order to suggest modifications to a project s requirements set, and reduce uncertainty in its value propositions. Two case studies in real-world industry contexts are presented, which explore the problem and the viability of the proposed framework for alleviating it. The thesis research questions are answered by various methods, including practitioner surveys, interviews, expert opinion, real-world examples and proofs of concept, as well as less-common methods such as natural language processing analysis of real requirements specifications (e.g., using TF-IDF to measure the proportion of software requirement traceability links that do not describe the requirement s value or problem-to-be-solved). The thesis found that in general, there is a disconnect between the state of best practice as proposed by the literature, and current industry practice in requirements engineering. The surveyed practitioners supported the notion that the aforementioned value realisation problems do exist in current practice, that they would be treatable by better requirements engineering practice, and that this thesis proposed framework would be useful and usable in projects whose complexity warrants the overhead of requirements modelling (e.g., for projects with many stakeholders, competing desires, or having high costs of deploying incorrect increments of software functionality).

This dissertation aimed to propose a career-goal framework of professional fulfillment, besides investigating professional fulfillment motivations and consequences. Professional fulfillment is defined as the perception of having attained, or being on the right track for attaining, one's most important career goals. The concept is composed of two dimensions: 1) Importance and achievement of career goals (goal content); 2) Evaluation of goal progress. The first study aimed to propose professional fulfillment construct both theoretically and empirically. Professional Fulfillment Scale (PFS) was developed in order to operationalize and capture the construct, being tested across three sub-studies, which comprised (1a) development of PFS, (1b) test of the model proposed, and (1c) analysis of test-retest reliability of the scale. Results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis have presented adequate validity evidence. Further analysis indicated that the scale presents evidence of construct and divergent validity, as well as test-retest reliability. The second study aimed to analyze how achievement goal orientations could motivate professional fulfillment, considering that the former represents distinct motives people may have to achieve goals. Therefore, it was investigated whether achievement goal orientation predicted professional fulfillment dimensions, being this relationship moderated/mediated by self-esteem. Results indicated that only mastery goal orientation predicts professional fulfillment, being this relationship moderated by self-esteem when mastery avoidance orientation and goal content part of PFS were considered, and mediated when mastery approach orientation and goal progress part of PFS were considered. Study 3 aimed to investigate the impact of professional fulfillment on positive psychology aspects, such as subjective well-being (SWB) and flourishing at work. Results of multiple regressions indicated that both dimensions of professional fulfillment predicted the affective component of SWB, but only the goal progress dimension of professional fulfillment predicted the satisfaction with life component of SWB. Additionally, results evidenced that both dimensions of professional fulfillment predicted flourishing at work. It concludes that the initial effort to propose and investigate professional fulfillment as a career-goal concept was a successful endeavor for initiating a challenging line of research.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this research project is to evaluate the impacts of the policies of the Emilia-Romagna region to encourage the development and internationalization of entrepreneurship. The study beyond this paper, aims to understand and identify the benefits of these programs for the regional ecosystem. and how the transversal competences affects entrepreneurship behaviour. This explorative research was conducted through the combination of three different approaches: 1. Data, theories and solutions collected on the field through the direct experience in Silicon Valley; 2. Qualitative and quantitative analysis using interview protocols and survey addressed to different actors involved in the ecosystem studied; 3. Support from literature. Time spent in San Francisco gave me the possibility to better understand the dynamics behind the Silicon Valley work environment and to go into the flow of this unique and inimitable reality. All this was possible thanks to the university of Bologna and in particular the professor and relator Sobrero Maurizio for the opportunity, support and collaboration during the whole project; the help of Dr. Luppi Elena in the survey construction; Dr. Mattarelli Elisa for the analysis of literature and the precious tips during the study of interview protocols; the collaboration of the regional consortium Art-ER, with the key figures of Mingozzi Irene (Silicon Valley hub manager) and D’Attorre Sara (Europe and international Dept); the availability of USmac and the two co-CEO Alfredo Coppola and Chris Burry for giving me the opportunity to attend the activities during the program in Silicon Valley; least but not last EIT Digital and in particular the CEO Eric Thelen, for the concession of a desk in San Francisco’s offices.
