Abstract (sommario):
“Myanmar is telling Asia ‘we are coming back!’ This is the time. Watch out! We are coming back. After the SEA Games, we will host ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations]. Big things are happening in our country.” “Kyaw,” an amiable rig coordinator in his early thirties, was relaxing on the ground drinking beer with his wife, passing the time prior to Myanmar's opening men's football match of the 2013 Southeast Asian or SEA Games. Fifteen days later—after a glorious opening ceremony, a slew of gold medals, and a celebratory closing ceremony—his assessment seemed prescient. The government newspaper,The New Light of Myanmar, boasted: “With the honor of hosting the Games that returned to the country after a 44-year long wait, Myanmar successfully hosted the biggest regional sporting event.” Thailand'sNationconcurred: “The country failed to overhaul Thailand as overall winners, but its symbolic triumph as host was far more important.” “Myanmar has basked in its host status and a rare moment in the international limelight after years in isolation under military rule,” declared Agence France-Presse in a widely syndicated article. “Some local and international observers thought Myanmar could not host the SEA Games. They were wrong,” boasted triumphant presidential spokesman U Ye Htut.

Abstract (sommario):
The Purananooru Thokai is unrivaled among the Tamil treasures compiled and preserved by ancient Tamil scholars. It describes the system of rule of the kings of the Sangam age. It makes us aware of the history and culture of the ancient Tamils. The Purananuru helps us to realize the glories of public life. A closer look helps us to understand the position of the Tamils of the time in the fields of political education, ethics, science, literature, music, and fine arts. The Purananooru beautifully highlights the excellence of the Tamils of that time in qualities such as love, grace, friendship, valour, honour, and charitableness. This book highlights the greatness of Kadayezhu Vallals, poets, crowned kings, leaders of small lands, petty chiefs, poets, brave people, etc. Many songs refer to eighteen Chera kings, thirteen Chola kings, and twelve Pandya kings. The Purananooru mentions the good social life of the Tamils, political awakening, hospitality, high morality, firm principles, wearing mangal sutra, installing the middle stone, fasting during widowhood, the shortening of the meal, the burial of the dead in the thali (pot), and the climbing of the funeral pyre of the husband.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper aimed at drawing the attention of human beings to the danger of drought to their life: experienced from time to time as a result of the attitudes of tyrant leaders, remarrying without observing the prescribed period a widow or divorcee should wait, bearing children outside wedlock, same-sex marriage, handling the glorious Qur’an in a state of impurity, leaving graves in ugly shapes, denying giving out of alms and waging wars and killings among Muslim community. Drought is meant to serve as a punishment to people for their wrongdoings. As far as people engage in doing wrongs, God may reprimand them in one way or the other for precautions. The paper is meant to serve as a reminder to desist from doing wrong. It discusses thirteen habits or instances or wrongs that bring about drought that are all human makings. Some problems were caused by the people themselves besides the ones that God sent down to his creatures.“God never changes for people unless they change for themselves (Innaallaha laa yughayyiru maa bi qaumin hatta yughayyiru maa bi anfusihim, (Quran: chapter 76, Verse 21). The paper used eleven stanzas of Gangar Wa’azu poem and discovered some instances that cause drought. There are some measures pointed out in the paper as the way out of drought Lastly, rainfall is of great importance; all people face difficulties in life without it which means the importance of rainfall cannot be overemphasized. The paper supports the Hausa saying “In kunne ya jiya jiki ya tsira” and “Tuntuɓe mai gyaran tafiya” The paper looks at the importance of rain water to human and animals’ lives and, at the same time lists problems that cause drought. In conclusion, the paper is of the view that disobedience to God is the major cause of all human problems. Again, it cautioned all to be very careful concerning the disobedience to their Creator.

Abstract (sommario):
The British vote in the June 2016 referendum to leave the European Union shook the entire European continent and beyond. It was one of the most important events in Europe since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and could very well mean the beginning of the end of the European Union as everyone knew it. On the eve of the election campaign, it was announced that the country wants to “take back control” of its borders, money and laws, which caused a resonance among voters. The vote comes after decades of growing hostility to the European project, which has ensured the supremacy of EU law in certain areas and whose principle of “freedom of movement” has led to millions of EU citizens moving to Britain to work and settle.Other contributing factors included the rise of nationalist sentiment, particularly in England, as well as austerity and disillusionment with traditional politics. The findings sparked a broader debate about the role of the nation-state and the rise of populism in an era of globalization. The vote revealed tensions between the individual countries of the UK, with England (53%) and Wales (52.5%) voting to leave the EU, while Scotland and Northern Ireland voted 62% and 56% respectively to remain. Other divisions were also revealed: for example, into megacities and small towns, as well as into different age groups and social classes. The European Union is not the powerful entity that the United Kingdom joined in 1973. At that time, the European Economic Community had the legitimacy of the powerful economic growth that characterized the years after the Second World War - the “glorious thirtieth anniversary”. The EU in 2016, on the contrary, suffered a series of extremely devastating blows, in particular: the economic crisis of 2008; self-inflicted damage from the failure to address the euro’s post-crisis weaknesses; russia’s success in disrupting the balance of power in Europe after the Cold War; terrorist attacks by ISIS and huge migration flows to the Union. All these blows have created powerful electorates against the political elite and the EU across the continent, not just in the UK.

Abstract (sommario):
Poliomyelitis, the dreaded cause of lameness, was ravaging the world in 1988; when more than 125 countries were endemic with the disease and about 350,000 new cases were reported every year. It could have been fanciful to consider eradicating the disease in any future. It was a resolve bold enough at the 41st World Health Assembly then to do it. The disease did provide epidemiological opportunities to make it a possible candidate for eradication and the idea was first realized soon in 1997; when the American region was certified as polio free; the last case being reported from Peru in 1994 (Louis Fermin Tenorio). Other regions did not fall short much; Mum Chanty of Cambodia was the last case from Western Pacific region in 1997 and the region was certified as polio free subsequently in the year 2000. Europe was the third region in the list; Melik Minas from Turkey had the disease in 1999; and the region got the same certificate in 2002.Meanwhile the story in India and South East Asian region was more protracted. Of the three types of polio viruses, the weakest one, wild type 2 was reported last from Aligarh in India in 1999. But it took another thirteen years to put a stop to the next type, wild type 3 (Pakistan in 2012). The last wild polio virus case of India and South East Asia region (onset on January 13) was found at Howrah in 2011 when poor Ruksar Khatun had contacted the disease. In 2012 India was declared no longer a polio endemic country. Later on the South East Asian region was certified as polio free on March 27, 2014. But in Africa and two countries of Eastern Mediterranean region ( Pakistan and Afghanistan ) transmission of wild polio virus continued. On July 24, 2014 last wild polio virus of Africa was detected in Nigeria. Subsequently the country interrupted wild polio virus transmission and was declared non endemic in 2015 leaving only two countries from the 125 when the journey had started. The latest of such glorious milestones was achieved when WHO certified that type 2 wild polio virus has been eradicated on September 20, 2015. The success story in India has been lauded greatly by the international community as technically speaking; the scenario had been most challenging in this country. But elsewhere, like in Afghanistan and Nigeria, things still pose problem – a huge number of children are still unreachable and the health workers being targeted with physical assaults even in 2012 and 2013.

Abstract (sommario):
This PhD thesis aims to pursue the historical research carried out over the last twenty years on the economy of Marseille in the contemporary era. The changes that took place in the second half of the twentieth century (1945-1992) led to the gradual disappearance of a centuries-old system that combined the import of raw materials from colonial overseas, processing in coastal areas, and then re-exporting the resulting products to the hinterland or foreland. At the same time as the iconic branches of this system were weakening – oil and soap, mineral chemicals, food processing activities – some companies resisted the wave of closures, while other sectors were emerging – oil, steel, container logistics – in connection with the western expansion of port infrastructures towards Lavéra from 1952, then towards the Gulf of Fos-sur-Mer from 1968.Without easy access to the documents of the period in public archives, the causes, rhythms, stakeholders and precise details of these phenomena remain unknown. The files of the Port autonome de Marseille (Autonomous Port of Marseille) created in 1966, supplemented by the archives of the port authorities that preceded it, have shed new light on the situation since the end of the Second World War. Containing rich documentation on the strategies, discourses and representations of the stakeholders as well as unpublished quantitative data, they also allow an examination of the environmental issues raised by the creation of the Fos complex, symbol of a productivistic, polluting and energy-consuming model of development at the very heart of the "Glorious Thirties"

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter looks into the nostalgia of the Glorious Thirty. It starts with the power of nostalgia and the way it fades through time. Glorious Thirty was believed to be an economic miracle that far exceeded reasonable expectations since it was the result of the convergence of an extraordinary set of economic circumstances. The reasons for the growing inequality of income and wealth are complex, highly contested, and, politically charged. The chapter notes the mainstream, dominant culture should recognize that there is an alternative class culture that it dominates unintentionally. It also includes how Glorious Thirty's reputation of steady across-the-board increases in discretionary income and time, instead of taken-for-granted racism and sexism.

Abstract (sommario):
Giovanni Arrighi ends The Long Twentieth Century with a vision of “capitalism burning up humanity ‘in the horrors (or glories) of…escalating violence’” (Chakrabarty 200). This is a tidy summary of the worldview shared by the texts studied in this book. Thirteen years later, in Adam Smith in Beijing...
