Abstract (sommario):
Abstract William Shakespeare’s Othello (1604) displays a critical agenda towards the emerging colonialist discourse of his time and may have encountered, or even been influenced by, African oral literature. This thesis will be probed in this article by comparing Othello with the folktale “The Handsome Stranger” and the Trickster character, well known all across Western Africa, touching lightly on Leo Africanus’s The History and Description of Africa (1550) in the process. In doing so, Othello’s most acknowledged source text, “Un Capitano Moro” by Giovanni Battista Giraldi (1565), will be involved, thus complementing earlier comparative readings of “Un Capitano Moro” and Othello. This postcolonial comparative reading will finally embrace Ahmed Yerima’s adaptation of Othello, entitled Otaelo (2002). In doing so, the article will discuss striking parallels among all four texts, as well as differences and diversions. The latter are, however, not read as counter arguments to the possibility of an encounter; rather, discursive diversions are contextualised historically and trans*textually. Before delving into this analysis, the article will explore both historical probabilities and methodological challenges of reading African oral literature as possible sources of Shakespeare’s Othello, as well as theorise trans*textuality (as related to and yet distinct from Kristeva’s intertextuality and Genette’s transtextuality). This article has developed from two papers, one held in 2015 at a symposium dedicated to Michael Steppat in Bayreuth, who, ever since, accompanied this project with most helpful critical input; I owe him my sincerest gratitude. A second workshop on this topic was held in 2016 in Berlin in the presence of Shankar Raman, Christopher Joseph Odhiambo, and a student research group from Bayreuth with Taghrid Elhanafy, Weeraya Donsomsakulkij, Samira Paraschiv, and Mingqing Yuan. Taghrid Elhanafy dedicates her MA and PhD thesis to comparing Romeo and Juliet with several Arabic and Farsi versions of Layla and Majnun (Cf. Elhanafy 2018). Moreover, this article owes sincere gratitude to a most challenging and expert editing by Shirin Assa, PhD candidate at Bayreuth University, as well as Omid Soltani. Moreover, I wish to thank Dilan Zoe Smida and especially Samira Paraschiv for supporting me while doing research and working on notes and bibliography.

Abstract (sommario):
The review is devoted to a book by the philosopher, culturologist, and literary critic René Girard, who famously devised the concept of fundamental anthropology with an emphasis on mimetic violence and scapegoating as cornerstones of social life and culture. His ‘mimetic theory’ constitutes one of the last big narratives of the humanities in the 21st c. A Theater of Envy is a must-read for those interested in Girard’s ‘canon’ and an unconventional interpretation of the English playwright’s oeuvre. The scholar is particularly interested in the Bard’s hypermimetic sensitivity. The book reveals a mimetic dimension in Shakespeare’s works, arguing that the playwright was always drawn to plots with mimetic potential. Following brilliant handling of complex structural models and paradoxical inversions, Shakespeare moved on and gradually lost interest in the mechanics of mimetic rivalry, focusing instead on ethical and human repercussions.

Abstract (sommario):
The Sound and the Fury. The Sound and the Fury.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to propose a dialogue between two dramatic works of great importance, Richard III and Trojan Women, both canonic for their authors, respectively, William Shakespeare (1564 - 1616) and Lucius Annaeus Seneca (4 BC - 65 AD). The initial premise is the traditional relationship between them, which presupposes that the Elizabethan tragedies have textual, thematic and stylistic influence of the Latin philosopher and tragedian. In order to study these relationships, restricted to the scope of the two referred plays, the dissertation was divided into three parts. The first chapter is about Seneca's influence on playwrights who wrote along the second half of the sixteenth century in England. It focuses mainly the vision and methodology used to study the issue of influence and changes of views over the years, reaching, for example, the fact that the influence was denied by some critics for some time. It also observes the outline of the object - the relation between plays - itself. Along these considerations, I was aware that I should not propose or deny the influence of Seneca in order not to incur in extremism. The second chapter, based on the results of the first chapter, seeks to read the historical interpretation of stylistic and thematic elements as derived from or influenced by Seneca. At this point, the analysis moves away from the critical discussion to approach the field of historical and literary criticism. The focused objects are exactly those that have previously been raised as "senequians", like the blank verse, the tyrant and the presence of ghosts. In the third chapter begins the interpretation of both tragedies. This preliminary approach was necessary in order to have a critical foundation for the discussion of influence, as that one produced by historical reading of Richard III. The mimetic theory of René Girard and the Crisis of Differences offered fundamental notions for the Elizabethan world, which presented interlocution between both tragedies, so that it was possible to examine approaches and distances between the two chosen plays. It was observed a very rich mythical and political relation among the plays using the known versions of history/myth

Matteoni, Francesca. "Blood beliefs in early modern Europe". Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/4523.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis focuses on the significance of blood and the perception of the body in both learned and popular culture in order to investigate problems of identity and social exclusion in early modern Europe. Starting from the view of blood as a liminal matter, manifesting fertile, positive aspects in conjunction with dangerous, negative ones, I show how it was believed to attract supernatural forces within the natural world. It could empower or pollute, restore health or waste corporeal and spiritual existence. While this theme has been studied in a medieval religious context and by anthropologists, its relevance during the early modern period has not been explored. I argue that, considering the impact of the Reformation on people’s mentalities, studying the way in which ideas regarding blood and the body changed from late medieval times to the eighteenth century can provide new insights about patterns of social and religious tensions, such as the witch-trials and persecutions. In this regard the thesis engages with anthropological theories, comparing the dialectic between blood and body with that between identity and society, demonstrating that they both spread from the conflict of life with death, leading to the social embodiment or to the rejection of an individual. A comparative approach is also employed to analyze blood symbolism in Protestant and Catholic countries, and to discuss how beliefs were influenced by both cultural similarities and religious differences. Combining historical sources, such as witches’ confessions, with appropriate examples from anthropology I also examine a corpus of popular ideas, which resisted to theological and learned notions or slowly merged with them. Blood had different meanings for different sections of society, embodying both the physical struggle for life and the spiritual value of the Christian soul. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 develop the dualism of the fluid in late medieval and early modern ritual murder accusations against Jews, European witchcraft and supernatural beliefs and in the medical and philosophical knowledge, while chapters 5 and 6 focus on blood themes in Protestant England and in Counter-Reformation Italy. Through the examination of blood in these contexts I hope to demonstrate that contrasting feelings, fears and beliefs related to dangerous or extraordinary individuals, such as Jews, witches, and Catholic saints, but also superhuman beings such as fairies, vampires and werewolves, were rooted in the perception of the body as an unstable substance, that was at the base of ethnic, religious and gender stereotypes.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter describes seventeenth century plays about the revolt. It ranges across scripts by the Englishman known as T.B., by the Netherlander Thomas Asselijn, and by the German Christian Weise, each adapting the story to his ends. In such works, we can speak of a ‘Giraffi effect’, given the influence of the account most often translated, and read, in Europe. It surfaces in the extraordinary dialogue in the Afterlife, between William Tell and the Neapolitan capopopolo, by David Faßmann.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Ona Blustery Sunday afternoon early in March 1842 a funeral cortege set off from a house on Third and Lombard in Philadelphia’s New Market Ward. It wound its way up Lombard to Fifth and then along Fifth to a church on Adelphi Street, within sight of Independence Hall. Behind the hearse walked the family of the deceased, his servants, his apprentices, his journeymen, and his closest friends. Behind them walked hundreds of ordinary citizens. Several thousand more stood in the streets and on the side walks to watch the solemn procession pass by. Such public displays of respect were hardly commonplace in Philadelphia. They were reserved for those individuals who had distinguished themselves in one way or another and won the admiration of their fellow citizens. Financier and city benefactor Stephen Girard had received this mark of honor, as had Episcopal bishop William White. And when Benjamin Franklin’s funeral took place the entire city had come to a halt. But this funeral procession was different. Girard, White, Franklin, and the other Philadelphians who had been ac corded a public funeral like this were all white men.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter surveys the place of animal sacrifice in later Christian and European culture. The first section concerns the scholarly tendency to treat animal sacrifice as a marker of primitive culture, starting with E. B. Tylor and William Robertson Smith and extending down to Walter Burkert and René Girard. The second section examines animal offerings within the Christian tradition, from late antiquity down to the present day, which are understood by those who make them as acts of charity rather than animal sacrifices. The third section analyzes some Christian transformations of sacrifice, including the ritual of the Eucharist, the conduct of a virtuous life, and the martyr’s death. These reconceptualizations completely remove the idea of sacrifice from the sphere of ritual and instead redefine it in relation to a person’s actions more generally. In recent centuries, they have become increasingly independent of a specifically Christian worldview, so that for many people in the contemporary world, the term “sacrifice” refers primarily to self-sacrifice, the action of a person who voluntarily gives up something of value for the sake of something else, whether an individual, a group, or a cause.
