Abstract (sommario):
Kata kunci: usia tua, gerontologi kritikal, dimensi biologi, dimensi psikologi, dimensi sosial, gerontologi sastera Abstract Shahnon Ahmad is a writer who has been elevated as a National Laurate by the Malaysian government. At the same time, he is a public intellectual well-liked by his community. As evidenced by the highly controversial novel Shit (1999), in producing his works he did not consider friends or opponents, and was never afraid in expressing his ideas and conviction. His works starting from the 60s often highlight various issues plaguing the communities in the urban and rural areas. However, since the early 2000s when Shahnon was at the later stage of his life, his writing had undergone an extreme change. He started to incorporate his experience of old age in his works. In this context, this article aims to analyse a novelette titled “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” (2003), with the focus on the human condition at old age. This work is analysed based on the conceptual framework of critical gerontology by Nancy R. Hooyman and H. Asuman Kiyak. This study finds that the novelette “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” fulfils three dimensions of gerontology, namely biological, psychological, and social. In fact, this literary work shows similarities between the author’s perspectives and the views of scholars in critical gerontology. The findings of this study are important because they assert the position of “Sebuah Mimpi Buat Hari Tua” as a material for literary gerontology. Keywords: aging, critical gerentology, biological dimension, psychological dimension, social dimension, literary gerontolgy

Abstract (sommario):
This prelude to the subsequent articles sets the stage for a discussion of the topic, “Generations of Gerontology: Aging, Continuity, and Change.” The authors define gerontology as a social system through which generations of gerontologists flow. As people move through this system, gerontology evidences both continuity and change in themes, theories, and methods. The broad sociocultural context within which gerontology exists reinforces, influences, and shapes the persistence of some aspects of gerontology while changing others. The subsequent articles deal with themes, theories, and methods. A fourth article provides a description of gerontology's sociocultural context, and encourages the development and use of our gerontological imagination. The concluding article attempts to synthesize the four other articles, and presents responses to the issues and challenges raised in those articles.

Abstract (sommario):
This concluding article summarizes key points about continuity and change in gerontology as described in the four previous articles. Synthesis and discussion is focused on five major areas in which gerontological continuity and change are evidenced: 1) transformation of basic themes over time; 2) gerontology's identity crisis; 3) the social ideology of gerontology; 4) evolution and refinement of gerontological ideas and methods; and 5) temporal frameworks. The author raises questions about unsolved issues and suggests the eventual need to examine the roles of individuals in shaping the field of study called gerontology.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT This article presents the results of a research by means of interdisciplinary approach on the causes and consequences of the incipient state of the development of Brazilian educational gerontology, in its three main areas of application. A systemic review of the available literature yielded the theoretical background. I obtained the material here between 2000 and 2019, including online sources: portals of the Capes, INEP, MEC, IBGE, the Lattes platform, Domínio Público, scientific journals, etc. I conclude that some of the causes of the incipient state of the main three areas of Brazilian educational gerontology can be found in the lack of a national educational policy directed towards the Brazilian elderly population, as well as in the lack of any education on aging and in the lack of any specific education of professionals who are responsible for the several modes of elderly formal education. Several consequences result: the formal education offered to the elderly does not correspond to their educational needs; “myths” and stereotypes about old age, the elderly and aging are not questioned; preconceptions and discrimination about the elderly population continue; there is no professionalization of educational gerontology. In conclusion, educational gerontology, with its three main areas, is a necessity and exigency in contemporary societies in order to confront a rapidly ageing population. It is needed for the elaboration and implementation of public policies for the elderly as well as for the creation of specific educational policies that contribute to the empowerment of the elderly Brazilian person. Keywords: Educational Gerontology; Education; Elderly; Incipient State of Development.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIntroduction: The concept ''aging in place'' became more instructing based, in order to answer the needs of the elderly, postponing institutionalization. Such concept offers elders an opportunity to remain in their homes as well as keeping their affective bonds and meaningful routines. Objective: Objectively, this study means to explore the contribute of Occupational Therapy in Environmental Gerontology, with the aging in place theme. Method: Therefore, we resorted to an integrative literature review, in which 6 steps were developed: the definition of the theme, recognition of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, organization of pre-selected studies, categorization of analysed studies, discussion and interpretation of results, and lastly, review of the gathered knowledge. The assembly of information was done from September to December in 2019, bearing as principles the inclusion of studies from within the years of 2012 to 2020 published in Portuguese and English. Results: From the 26 selected studies, these were categorized in: i) Evaluation, following the grading methods used by Occupational Therapy, on the scope of Environmental Gerontology; ii) Intervention, with studies aimed at interventions by Occupational Therapy in a household context. Conclusion: Occupational therapists are fundamental to evaluate and intervene on the elders' household context, in order to maintain or improve their functional capabilities, besides allowing the home environment to prevail. However, there is little evidence on the types of assessment instruments in the field of Environmental Gerontology, and it is important to carry out further studies on this topic. Keywords: Gerontology. Environment. Occupational Therapy. Aging in Place. Abstract (sommario):
This paper is a personal account of five “eye-opening” career experiences in the author’s life that illustrate how biographical events shape opportunities and inspire knowledge- making in critical gerontology. Borrowing from Pierre Bourdieu’s methodological concept of “fieldwork in philosophy,” this account suggests that critical thinking only becomes eaningful in the lived contexts in which it is grounded, negotiated, transformed, and shared. Thus theoretical ideas about ageing, despite their abstract nature, have historical and unpredictable stories of their own that are worthy of a “fieldwork” approach. The paper also emphasises that the “critical” in critical gerontology includes a strong reflexive and self-critical dimension about the subjective conditions of doing gerontological research, especially in the face of gerontology’s claim to be an objective science.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Gerontology programs in the United States are on the decline despite the need for trained professionals who can serve a growing aging population (Pelham, Schafer, Abbott, & Estes, 2012). For many students, a gerontology course may be their only formal exposure to the concepts of aging. The development of gerontological pedagogy is important, but there is limited knowledge about what is being taught around the nation and to what extent course content reflects the current scope of the discipline. This symposium explores the role of individual instructors, the larger environment, and the efforts of organizational level criteria (i.e., AGHE standards to advance the field) to promote higher-quality gerontological education. The first presenter reports dissertation findings that examined college students’ self-perceptions of aging and how stereotypes impact them even after taking an introduction to gerontology course. The second presenter discusses the need for service-learning and community engagement in gerontology, while reporting on theoretical and practical suggestions, as well as potential pitfalls to avoid. The third presenter reports on student evaluations in a Master of Science program before and after the implementation of the Association for Gerontology’s proposed competencies. And our final presenter provides insights on applied perspectives and pedagogical approaches in and out of the classroom, including pitfalls and possibilities. Our discussant brings our ideas together to report on the discipline of gerontology and our potential to advance to the next level of pedagogical strategies.

A. Sagner. 1998. The 1944 Pension Laws Amendment Bill: old-age security policy in South Africa in historical perspective, ca. 1920–1960. Southern African Journal of Gerontology7, 1, 10–14.S. van der Berg. 1998. Ageing, public finance and social security in South Africa. Southern African Journal of Gerontology7, 1, 3–9.The latest issue of Southern African Journal of Gerontology traces the origins of the South African social pensions system and addresses contemporary issues. In her editorial, Monica Ferreira (1998) notes that South Africa is one of only two countries in Africa that operates a social old-age system. Although the value of the South African social pension system is low in terms of real income (R490 in July 1998 – approximately US$100), the pension is generous in comparison with other developing countries. The take-up rate of the pension is virtually 90 per cent in the case of Africans, who historically were the most disadvantaged group under apartheid.

Abstract (sommario):
In this essay, we argue that gerontologists should increase their engagement with anthropologists to increase transdisciplinary collaboration, fulfill the interdisciplinary promise of gerontology as a field, and to ensure the work of anthropologists is formed by, and employed in, situations where meaningful engagement with practitioners and policymakers can lead to social change. Anthropology is the study of human societies in historical, biological, and sociocultural context, comprising a holistic field of study that can contribute unique methods, approaches, and theories to the field of gerontology. Although increasing amounts of anthropological scholarship have focused on older adulthood, this critical work of anthropologists still needs to be utilized by those in positions of power to enact change. Furthermore, the work conducted by anthropologists of aging has not consistently been recognized as anthropological scholarship. Therefore, a notable gap exists between the promise of the anthropology of aging and the utilization of the field, its findings, and engagement with the broader gerontological academy. As such, the contributions of anthropology to aging scholarship and the resulting reduction in inequities in the aging experience are not always adequately recognized. By examining the history of anthropology’s engagement with aging and the lifecourse, we argue for a more applied anthropological gerontology. We conclude with a call to action to ensure that anthropological gerontology is seen as a fundamental branch of scholarship, both within anthropology and gerontology, which can be used to improve the lived experiences of older adults globally.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract There are two universities that offer Gerontology curriculum and confer Gerontology degrees in Japan, including J.F. Oberlin University and The University of Tokyo. J.F. Oberlin University started its Master’s program in 2002 and its doctoral program in 2004. The University of Tokyo endowed a Gerontology Research Division in 2006 and started its cross-departmental program in Gerontology in 2008. The endowed Gerontology Research Division was elevated to the Institute of Gerontology (IOG) in 2009. From April 2014 through March 2021, the Gerontology program, known as the Global Leadership Initiative for Age-Friendly Society (GLAFS) at The University of Tokyo, was funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Today, The University of Tokyo now funds the program which was renamed World-leading Innovative Graduate Study Program in Gerontology: Global Leadership Initiative for Age-Friendly Society (WINGS-GLAFS). This paper first presents a brief history of Gerontology-related events in Japan, including foundational education proposals of The Science Council of Japan, then introduces Japan’s leading Gerontology education programs offered by J.F. Oberlin University and The University of Tokyo in detail. Finally, it presents other gerontology related activities including the Gerontology Literacy Test started by the IOG in 2013.

Abstract (sommario):
The goal of the article is to provide an extended definition and in-depth description of literary gerontology as a branch of humanities. Contemporary world witnesses how the number of elderly people increases that makes the research relevant. Literary gerontology forms in the mid-1970s in the framework of age studies. Scholars of literary gerontology examine the gerontological markers in fictional texts. Unlike sociologists or medical gerontologists who regard biological aging as involution of the body/brain and degradation of the individual, the literary scholars consider fictional representations of late adulthood in a much more contrastive and tragic focus: elderly people are forced to deal with numerous negative stereotypes of old age in a youth-oriented culture. Therefore the key concept of literary gerontology studies is ageism which etymology is traced in the lexical unit of “age”. Its initial meaning “lifetime; maturity; vital force” is lost over time, acquiring the connotation of “decline” (feebleness; senility). One of the problems of literary gerontology studies is the widespread use of ageist euphemisms in fiction. The methods used in the paper are mixed: historical data processing, analyses of interdisciplinary resources (literary gerontology, social gerontology, age studies). The results can be practical for classes of theory of literature and social gerontology. The findings of the paper inform of the origin of literary gerontology studies, its key concept of ageism and a set of semantic and poetic tools for further research.
