Abstract (sommario):
The role of the nurse in geriatrics has been discussed for more than fifty years. As early as 1965, Doreen Norton, a well-known nursing theorist, wrote that no nurse in the world should start their career without a background in geriatrics that should be in the training structure. In Russia, currently there is a significant lack of qualified nursing staff in the field of geriatric care. Besides, there is still no such specialty as geriatric nurse. The aim is to consider the degree of definition and understanding of the role of the geriatric nurse in addressing the challenges associated with the aging of the population and the expansion of the group of older people with increased demands on social and medical services Methods: Analysis of the scientific papers for the period from 2015 to 2020 published on the CyberLeninka website. CyberLeninka is the scientific electronic libraries based on the Open Science paradigm, aiming at, in particular, popularization of science and scientific activities. Results: Cyberleninka revealed 14 articles met the criteria of inclusion in to the paper by titles. By content there was included 7 articles. In Russia, "geriatric nurse" means activity profile, not a specialty. There is no any special professional training courses in geriatrics, nurses mainly learn from the conferences on geriatrics in terms of the nursing sections or schools provided by NCO. Nursing beds are being run by nurses qualified as general practitioners. There is still evidence of misunderstanding of the geriatric nurses' role, nursing training in geriatrics at the college level is reported to be poor. Conclusions: Despite a number of the arguments supporting the importance of the geriatric nurse role and the need for its development in Russia, this issue remains undeveloped. It remains unclear why after having run 26-year history of Geriatrics in St.Petersburg geriatric nursing as a specialty has not been introduced officially and is waiting for being acknowledged.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim: The study was conducted to define the effects of a geriatric nursing course on nursing students’ attitudes towards the elderly. Method: The study was conducted in a quasi-experimental design with second-year students studying in the Department of Nursing of a university. A total of 92 people participated in the study. Data were collected online. SPSS 21 statistical software was used in the analysis of the data. Results: Before taking the geriatric nursing course, 75% of the students stated that old age started over 65 years of age, while 87% stated that they started over 65 years of age after taking the geriatrics course (p<0.05). At the same time, it was determined that 27% of the students had difficulty communicating with elderly individuals before taking the geriatric nursing course, while only 17% had difficulty communicating with elderly individuals after taking the geriatrics course (p<0.05). It was determined that the average pre-test score of the students taking the geriatric nursing course was 123.55±15.86, the average post-test score was 127.00±16.40, and the average scores between the pre-test and post-test showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: Geriatric nursing course strengthens students' communication with the elderly. It is recommended to include geriatric nursing courses in all university curriculum in order to increase knowledge skills and positive attitudes towards the elderly in nursing students. Thus, students who start working as nurses can play an active role in improving patient outcomes such as hospital stays, reduced readmission rates, and patient satisfaction in hospitalisations due to old age.

Abstract (sommario):
The increase in the elderly population has implications for increasing access to health services by this group. The unpreparedness and misunderstanding of nurses in health services can lead to ineffective nursing care provided to elderly patients. The purpose of implementing basic geriatric nursing training activities is to improve and/or develop the knowledge and skills of nurses within the scope of geriatric nursing. The implementation of Basic Geriatric Nursing Training for nurses was held by the Indonesian Gerontology Nurses Association (PP IPEGERI) from 7 to 11 February 2022. The total training participants were 17 people with education level from diploma III to Masters in nursing. Analysis of the training implementation showed an increase in the results of the participants' pretest-posttest scores by (+) 28.09 points (from a scale of 100 points) with an increase in the average pretest score of 42.35 to 70.44 in the posttest which could be interpreted as a positive benefit from the implementation of basic geriatric nursing training activities carried out by PP IPEGERI for nurses at Pasar Minggu Hospital. The importance of the role of geriatric nurses in health services needs to be supported by an increase in the competence of nurses, one of which can be implemented through the provision of geriatric nursing training carried out by professional organizations. In addition to providing training, support and making policies that are able to support the implementation of effective geriatric nursing services for elderly patients in health services, it is also important to consider.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: The growing number of older adults has placed unprecedented demands on the healthcare system while the number of geriatric nurses has not kept pace, and the gap is expected to widen. Simultaneously the older adult population is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse while the nursing workforce lacks diversity. Given the urgent need to increase and expand the number of diverse geriatric trained nurses, an innovative sustainable nursing program, Enhancing Diversity in Geriatric Nursing (EDGE) was implemented to train diverse nursing students in geriatrics thereby expanding the workforce and meeting the needs of underserved older adult populations. Methods: An Integrated Geriatric Training Program was implemented to provide didactic education through established online geriatric training modules, experiential learning through geriatric clinical placements, and telehealth training. EDGE supported students with stipends. Retention was enhanced via workshops and a combined mentorship program with peer tutoring to achieve a synergistic approach. Strategies were implemented to connect EDGE scholars to employment opportunities with underserved populations. Program impact was examined with a mixed-methods approach utilizing both quantitative and qualitative data to evaluate satisfaction and inform program refinement. Data were analyzed and Rapid Cycle Quality Improvement was utilized for monitoring and quality improvement. Results: EDGE resulted in the recruitment, enrollment, and geriatric training of 40 nursing students. EDGE scholars indicated program satisfaction. Conclusions: Disadvantaged nursing students benefitted from the EDGE Program. Longer term, the impact of the EDGE program has a strong likelihood for improving the care of underserved older adults by a diverse geriatric-trained nursing workforce.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective. Aging is a growing public health concern for people, organizations, and governments. The current study was undertaken to provide insights into the global research output on geriatric nursing. Methods. A bibliometric study was implemented using the WoS database for the period from 1900 to 2020. Various tools and measures were used to analyze and visualized. Results. The search strategy found 4923 papers. The oldest paper was written by Beverly C. Andre in 1953. As team size increases, so does the number of citations. The USA was the active country and the highest number of coauthors. New York University was an active institution. Stig Karlsson was the most active author in Geriatric Nursing with 28 articles from Sweden, followed by Koen Milisen and Sandman, with 26 articles each from Sweden and Belgium. The most frequent words in this field were depression, malnutrition, education, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia. The latest research themes in this field were COVID-19, interprofessional locomotive syndrome, emergency nursing, and public health. The most influential papers were specified. Journal of the American Geriatrics Society was the most active journal. Conclusions. Geriatric nursing is a rooted field and has received special attention in the last decade. Policymakers, especially in developing countries, should pay attention to geriatric nursing as a specialty of nursing to solve aging issues they would face considering the increasing elderly population.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate whether empathy and resilience moderate the relationship between geriatric care-related stress and geriatric nursing practice among secondary hospital nurses. Methods: Data were collected from three secondary hospitals in J province from July 20, 2022, to August 10, 2022. Nurses with at least three months of employment were convenience sampled, and a structured questionnaire was used. A total of 218 questionnaires were included in the analysis. The collected data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0 software. Results: Geriatric nursing practice was significantly positively correlated with geriatric care-related stress, empathy, and resilience. Empathy moderated the effects of geriatric care-related stress on geriatric nursing practice, and this moderating effect was re-moderated by resilience (moderated moderation effect). In other words, nurses with high resilience and empathy tended to show stronger geriatric nursing practice even with elevated geriatric care-related stress. Conversely, nurses with high resilience and low empathy tended to show weaker geriatric nursing practice with increasing geriatric care-related stress. Conclusion: These results highlight the need for multilateral efforts to reduce nurses’ stress related to geriatric care and enhance their empathy and resilience, ultimately promoting geriatric nursing practice. This study has important implications for nursing practice. Specifically, it is the first to confirm a moderated moderation effect of empathy and resilience on the relationship between geriatric care-related stress and geriatric nursing practice among nurses. Subsequent studies should identify whether other factors moderate the relationship between geriatric care-related stress and geriatric nursing practice.

Abstract (sommario):
The National Bureau of Statistics of China shows that the population over 65 years old in China exceeds 166 million accounting for 11.93% of the total population by the end of 2018. The importance and severity of taking care of the elderly are becoming increasingly prominent. High-quality and meticulous care for the daily life of the elderly needs helpful and advanced sciences and technologies. Smart geriatric nursing is a must. Basing on the professional knowledge of geriatric nursing, this paper proposes a framework of smart geriatric nursing which consists of three aspects of smart nursing: smart geriatric nursing in physical health using biosensor and advanced devices, smart geriatric nursing in mental health based on user profile, and smart geriatric nursing for daily life based on big data in health. The deployment of the proposed method relies on the technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT), user profile system, big data, and many other advanced information technologies. The framework of methods can provide a useful reference for the systematic technical scheme of smart geriatric nursing in an aging society.

On October 24, 2002, the Second Senate of theBundesverfassungsgericht(German Federal Constitutional Court) issued its ruling in theGeriatric Nursing Actcase. The eagerly expected judgment not only puts an end to the discussion on the Federation's legislative powers in the field of geriatrics, which has occupied German politicians and constitutional scholars since the mid-1980s, when the drop in the number of applicants for geriatric nursing jobs and the steady growth of the elderly population have led to calls for a standardization of the education for geriatric nurses at Federal level. More importantly, the decision brings clarity to the question of the justiciability of the so-calledErforderlichkeitsklausel(“necessity clause”) laid down in Article 72 para. 2 of the Basic Law.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Older adults living in rural areas have limited access to geriatrics interprofessional team care. In the Veteran healthcare system, geriatric teams such as geriatricians, nursing professionals, social workers, pharmacists and psychologists, located in urban areas link up with rural clinics to provide geriatric consultation remotely through clinical video telehealth and other means in the project GRECC Connect. Since its inception in 2014, the service has now grown to 16 geriatric teams offering consultation to over 100 clinic sites serving older rural Veterans. GRECC Connect delivered over 2,000 consultations in 2019, meeting complex care needs by identifying and linking geriatric services and management to patients with geriatric syndromes. The network of established geriatric teams, local champions and a shared Electronic Health Record facilitated the spread, while ongoing effort to build and maintain relationships between consultants and local rural provider teams and other community based services are important for ongoing success.

Evidence on geriatric nursing practice environments, obtained from studies of registered nurses (RNs) in American teaching hospitals, may have limited applicability to Canada, where RNs and registered practical nurses (RPNs) care for older people in predominantly nonteaching hospitals. Purpose This study describes nurses’ perceptions of the overall quality of care for older people and the geriatric nursing practice environment (geriatric resources, interprofessional collaboration, and organizational value of older people’s care) and examines if these perceptions differ by professional designation and hospital teaching status. Methods A cross-sectional survey, using Dillman’s tailored design, that included Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile subscales, was completed by 2005 Ontario RNs and registered practical nurses to assess their perceptions of the quality of care and geriatric nursing practice environment. Results Scores on the Geriatric Institutional Assessment Profile subscales averaged slightly above the midpoint except for geriatric resources which was slightly below. Registered practical nurses rated the quality of care and geriatric nursing practice environment higher than RNs; no significant differences were found by hospital teaching status. Conclusions Nurses’ perceptions of older people’s care and the geriatric nursing practice environment differ by professional designation but not hospital teaching status. Teaching and nonteaching hospitals should both be targeted for geriatric nursing practice environment improvement initiatives.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract To move forward in the field of Geriatrics in Health professions education (HPE), we must understand its conception and recognize current trends and future directions. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric and network analysis of all studies indexed in the Scopus Database related to Geriatrics and HPE from 1953 to 2022. We retrieved 2940 studies comprising 7344 authors and 618 journals; these were imported to bibliometrics (RStudio) and Vos Viewer. To understand the intellectual structure, we employed a co-citation analysis; we identified 5 clusters that described fundamentals in geriatrics, nursing education, needs assessment, and interprofessional education (IPE). Furthermore, six topics were placed in the keyword co-occurrence, ranging from medical, nursing, dental, social workers, and interprofessional education. Consequently, we identified geriatrics education for medical students and interprofessional education between 2004 and 2016; furthermore, clinical competence was the most recent trending topic, accompanied by end-of-life care and geriatric psychiatry. In the evolution map, three topics emerged in the last ten years: IPE, online learning, and geriatric dentistry. These findings were confirmed in the bibliographic coupling analysis. Four major themes emerged among 13 clusters: IPE, Attitudes and career orientation to geriatrics, innovative educational methods such as gamification, and geriatric undergraduate education. Although we identified several studies, this barely represents the 1% of production in HPE. Furthermore, we identified a trend toward IPE, undergraduate medical education, career orientation, and innovative education. However, there is a lack of themes such as simulation and entrustable professional activities, with an underrepresentation of the developing world.

Abstract (sommario):
Geriatric nursing activities are closely related to patient safety; therefore, nurses’ efforts to improve patient safety in geriatric hospitals are important. In the present study, we investigated the relationships between person-centered care practice, patient safety competence, and patient safety during nursing activities in geriatric hospitals. We used the following tools to investigate the factors affecting patient safety during nursing activities: (a) the Korean version of the Person-Centered Care Assessment Tool (P-CAT), (b) the Patient Safety Competence Assessment Tool for Nurses, and (c) the Patient Safety Nursing Activities Assessment Tool for geriatric nurses. The questionnaire survey was completed by 186 geriatric nurses in 12 geriatric hospitals from 1 August to 31 August 2018. We analyzed the survey data using a t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. We identified patient safety skills (β = 0.417, p < 0.001) and age (β = 0.209, p = 0.035) as key factors that influence patient safety during nursing activities. Therefore, to improve the quality of patient safety during nursing activities conducted by geriatric nurses, it is necessary to develop strategies to improve patient safety skills and expand the pool of competent nurses with clinical experience.

Abstract (sommario):
With the increasingly serious aging trend in China, the incidence of some chronic diseasesrelated to it is also increasing. In this regard, the demands of elderly care gradually show a trend of diversified development, and the requirements of nursing quality become more and more strict. In China, most nursing personnel training is accomplished through colleges and universities, many of which come from the nursing profession. However, there is no division of nursing disciplinesfor elderly patients at present, and the corresponding training plan, content and target for elderly care are not specific. Next, we focus on the implementation strategy of training elderly nursing talents based on the needs of elderly care.

Abstract (sommario):
Geriatric nursing is the main course for cultivating elderly nursing talents. The teaching quality of geriatric nursing is the key element of training elderly nursing talents. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the classroom teaching quality of geriatric nursing. The purpose of this study is to construct a four-subject and four-dimension evaluation system and explore its application effect in geriatric nursing teaching. From February 2022 to July 2022, an experimental study was conducted on 185 sophomore nursing students from Zaozhuang Vocational College. The experimental group adopted the four-subject and four-dimension evaluation system, while the control group adopted the summative evaluation method. The study found that the scores of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group (P<0.05). In addition, the academic evaluation of the experimental group was significantly improved (P<0.05). The results show that the application of four subjects and four dimensions evaluation system in geriatric nursing teaching is conducive to improving students' learning effect and comprehensive ability.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: Older adults compose the majority of patients with cancer in the United States; however, it is unclear how well geriatrics or geriatric oncology training is being incorporated into hematology-oncology (hem-onc) fellowships. Methods: A convenience sample of hem-onc fellows completed a (written or electronic) survey assessing their education, clinical experiences, and perceived proficiency in geriatric oncology during training; knowledge base in geriatric oncology; confidence in managing older adults with cancer; and general attitudes toward geriatric oncology principles. Results: Forty-five percent of respondents (N = 138) were female, 67% were based in the United States, and most (60%) were past their first year of training. Most fellows rated geriatric oncology as important or very important (84%); however, only 25% reported having access to a geriatric oncology clinic and more than one half (53%) reported no lectures in geriatric oncology. Fellows reported fewer educational experiences in geriatric oncology than in nongeriatric oncology. For example, among procedure-based activities, 12% learned how to perform a geriatric assessment but 78% learned how to perform a bone marrow biopsy ( P < .05). Of those completing the knowledge-based items, 41% were able to identify correctly the predictors of chemotherapy toxicity in older adults with cancer. Conclusion: Despite the prevalence of cancer in older adults, hem-onc fellows report limited education in or exposure to geriatric oncology. The high value fellows place on geriatric oncology suggests that they would be receptive to additional training in this area.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose: Study the specific application effect of multi-dimensional and three-dimensional teaching in Geriatric Nursing teaching in the context of mass entrepreneurship and innovation. Methods: Respectively select 80 2015 nursing undergraduates and 80 2014 nursing undergraduates in our school as the research object of the experimental group and the control group. In terms of Geriatric Nursing teaching, nursing students in the control group adopt traditional classroom teaching methods to carry out, while students in the experimental group adopt multi-dimensional and three-dimensional teaching in the context of mass entrepreneurship and innovation. Then observe and compare the geriatric nursing knowledge scoring as well as theory and practice assessment results in the two groups taught with different methods. Results: It's obvious that the scoring of nursing students in the experimental group is higher than those in the control group in respect of geriatric nursing knowledge, and statistical significance exists in the between-group differences (P < 0.05). The nursing students in the experimental group perform obviously better than those in the control group in terms of the results of theory, practice and comprehensive assessment as well as total score, and statistical significance exists in the between-group differences (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Implementing Geriatric Nursing teaching for higher education nursing undergraduates with multi-dimensional and three-dimensional teaching in the context of mass entrepreneurship and innovation can remarkably improve nursing students' cognitive level in geriatric nursing as well as their mastery degree of theoretical, practical and comprehensive knowledge. Thus, the multi-dimensional and three-dimensional teaching mode in the context of mass entrepreneurship and innovation makes 80 2015 nursing undergraduates in our school direct beneficiaries, which could be popularized and applied in medical colleges.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Programs like orthogeriatrics, geriatric cardiology have shown to improve outcomes in hospitalized geriatric patients. Our Geriatrics MICU Co-management program is a quality improvement initiative that instigates a partnership approach with critical care medicine in integrating geriatric assessments and build foundation for interdisciplinary care of critically ill patients. MICU (Medical Intensive Care Unit) protocols do not have standard geriatrics assessments integrated in clinical care. An electronic dash-board identifies high risk elderly (HRE) patients admitted at a MICU in a large teaching hospital in Northeast Ohio based on nursing specific screening triggers. A geriatrics co-management team engages in a comprehensive geriatric assessments and care transition. 386 patient were identified using HRE screening triggers in a period of 100 days. 33 % (n=131) were generated as consults for co-management. A pilot review on 131 HRE patients was conducted. 70% (n=93) patients had incident frailty. 93% (n=87) of patients with frailty were diagnosed with incident delirium. 56% (n=74) of patients were newly diagnosed with cognitive impairment. 56 % (N=74) of patients had a medication reduction. An average of 1.23 medication was changed. 85% (n =112) of patients had a warm hand off to the next level of provider on discharge. 90% (n=119) of patients notified improved self-management skills and better understanding of discharge process. The Geri-MICU program demonstrates a patient -centered approach in integrating geriatric assessments for critically ill patients and build foundation of a geriatrics-critical care task force. The program would be a mile stone in optimizing elderly care in critical care units.

Abstract (sommario):
Many donkeys are now kept as pets rather than working animals. This means they often live longer, with many now reaching 20-years-old and being classed as geriatric. These donkeys often require specialist treatment and management, as they are prone to certain conditions such as dental disease and arthritis. The owner should be fully involved with treatment plans and supported through any environmental changes. When the time comes, the quality of life of the geriatric donkey should be assessed carefully, and the owner should be guided through the resulting decisions with support and dignity for their much-loved companion.
