Abstract (sommario):
The role of the nurse in geriatrics has been discussed for more than fifty years. As early as 1965, Doreen Norton, a well-known nursing theorist, wrote that no nurse in the world should start their career without a background in geriatrics that should be in the training structure. In Russia, currently there is a significant lack of qualified nursing staff in the field of geriatric care. Besides, there is still no such specialty as geriatric nurse. The aim is to consider the degree of definition and understanding of the role of the geriatric nurse in addressing the challenges associated with the aging of the population and the expansion of the group of older people with increased demands on social and medical services Methods: Analysis of the scientific papers for the period from 2015 to 2020 published on the CyberLeninka website. CyberLeninka is the scientific electronic libraries based on the Open Science paradigm, aiming at, in particular, popularization of science and scientific activities. Results: Cyberleninka revealed 14 articles met the criteria of inclusion in to the paper by titles. By content there was included 7 articles. In Russia, "geriatric nurse" means activity profile, not a specialty. There is no any special professional training courses in geriatrics, nurses mainly learn from the conferences on geriatrics in terms of the nursing sections or schools provided by NCO. Nursing beds are being run by nurses qualified as general practitioners. There is still evidence of misunderstanding of the geriatric nurses' role, nursing training in geriatrics at the college level is reported to be poor. Conclusions: Despite a number of the arguments supporting the importance of the geriatric nurse role and the need for its development in Russia, this issue remains undeveloped. It remains unclear why after having run 26-year history of Geriatrics in St.Petersburg geriatric nursing as a specialty has not been introduced officially and is waiting for being acknowledged.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim: The study was conducted to define the effects of a geriatric nursing course on nursing students’ attitudes towards the elderly. Method: The study was conducted in a quasi-experimental design with second-year students studying in the Department of Nursing of a university. A total of 92 people participated in the study. Data were collected online. SPSS 21 statistical software was used in the analysis of the data. Results: Before taking the geriatric nursing course, 75% of the students stated that old age started over 65 years of age, while 87% stated that they started over 65 years of age after taking the geriatrics course (p<0.05). At the same time, it was determined that 27% of the students had difficulty communicating with elderly individuals before taking the geriatric nursing course, while only 17% had difficulty communicating with elderly individuals after taking the geriatrics course (p<0.05). It was determined that the average pre-test score of the students taking the geriatric nursing course was 123.55±15.86, the average post-test score was 127.00±16.40, and the average scores between the pre-test and post-test showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.05). Conclusion: Geriatric nursing course strengthens students' communication with the elderly. It is recommended to include geriatric nursing courses in all university curriculum in order to increase knowledge skills and positive attitudes towards the elderly in nursing students. Thus, students who start working as nurses can play an active role in improving patient outcomes such as hospital stays, reduced readmission rates, and patient satisfaction in hospitalisations due to old age.

Abstract (sommario):
The increase in the elderly population has implications for increasing access to health services by this group. The unpreparedness and misunderstanding of nurses in health services can lead to ineffective nursing care provided to elderly patients. The purpose of implementing basic geriatric nursing training activities is to improve and/or develop the knowledge and skills of nurses within the scope of geriatric nursing. The implementation of Basic Geriatric Nursing Training for nurses was held by the Indonesian Gerontology Nurses Association (PP IPEGERI) from 7 to 11 February 2022. The total training participants were 17 people with education level from diploma III to Masters in nursing. Analysis of the training implementation showed an increase in the results of the participants' pretest-posttest scores by (+) 28.09 points (from a scale of 100 points) with an increase in the average pretest score of 42.35 to 70.44 in the posttest which could be interpreted as a positive benefit from the implementation of basic geriatric nursing training activities carried out by PP IPEGERI for nurses at Pasar Minggu Hospital. The importance of the role of geriatric nurses in health services needs to be supported by an increase in the competence of nurses, one of which can be implemented through the provision of geriatric nursing training carried out by professional organizations. In addition to providing training, support and making policies that are able to support the implementation of effective geriatric nursing services for elderly patients in health services, it is also important to consider.

Blackmon, Tami Felicia. "A Nursing Education Program to Decrease Use of Psychotropics Among Dementia Patients". ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/5979.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Dementia, a clinical condition that affects the psychological ability of patients, is distinguished by a significant overall decline in cognitive function that results in distorted perception. Guiding nursing practice in the long-term care (LTC) setting to decrease the unnecessary use of psychotropics is critical because doing so relates to the patients' quality of life and safety. In the LTC facility that served as the practicum site for this study, there was an observed overuse of psychotropic medications in the care of patients with dementia. The practice-focused question guiding this project asked whether a nursing staff development program would decrease the use of psychotropics in dementia patients. The purpose of the project was to inform nursing staff through an educational program on alternative methods to use when dementia patients exhibit increased disturbing behaviors. The conceptual framework for the project was the knowledge-to-action model. The nursing staff development program had a positive effect on the nursing staff as evidenced by a statistically significant improvement in knowledge and attitudes about the use of psychotropics in caring for dementia patients. The use of psychotropic in the dementia patient decreased from 22.32% to 15.77%, the lowest score achieved by the organization in 5 years. The dementia patients benefited from this project and its positive social change implications for nursing practice by decreasing dementia patients use of psychotropics, minimizing their side effects to the patients and providing an overall feeling of well-being.

Abstract (sommario):
Ethical decision-making is an integral aspect of gerontic nurses' experiences of caring for nursing home residents and their families. This thesis examines the author's journey into the life-worlds of nine registered nurses working in an Australian nursing home to explore how they manage the ethical problems they encounter in their everyday experience of nursing home life. As a result of interviews, the study revealed that nurses utilized an approach to ethical decision-making not previously described. This approach was identified as being professional, familial, collegial and reciprocal in nature. As an approach to ethical decision-making, respectful relationships is a potential tool for nurses coping with the ethical problems that are an every-day aspect of their professional lives in a nursing home. Respectful relationships can guide nurses' ethical decision-making as they strive to do the right thing

Abstract (sommario):
The home health industry's introduction to managed care raises the prospect of reduced access to health care and poor outcomes for a vulnerable segment of our population—the rural elderly. Before effective intervention strategies can be accurately evaluated, a clearer picture of the sociodemographic features and home care service consumption is needed for this understudied group. The study was intended to provide a basis for future research into the evaluation of alternative methods of delivering effective care in terms of outcome and decreased cost for this population. A retrospective descriptive analysis was made of the patient record for the first six months of care from a proprietary home health agency. Eighty-one charts were examined and features such as age, race, gender, socioeconomic level, functional limitations, family support and literacy were analyzed to provide a profile of the patient population. Resource consumption was measured in terms of the type and frequency of disciplines intervening in each case. Comparison was made between the characteristics of the sample and the resource use. The study provided a composite view of the typical patient: Caucasian, literate, low income female, between 70-80 years of age, without family support. No clear linkage between specific characteristics and resource consumption was found; there was a broad range in the numbers of visits made to patients.

Cabrera, Amparita L. "The role of group activity participation in depression among institutionalized elderly". FIU Digital Commons, 1996. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1954.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The role of group activity participation in depression among a group of residents (N=65), age 80 and older, in a nursing home was examined using the framework of Roy's Adaptation Theory and Nolen-Hoeksema's Response Style Theory of Depression. Roy views depression as a maladaptation. Nolen-Hoeksema views group activity participation as a therapeutic distraction to break depressed moods and thus allow for positive adaptation. This study utilized data from medical records, group activity attendance, and self-report questionnaires. Demographic distributions were computed and correlational statistics were performed between subjects' participation and their degree of depression, pain experience, functional status, presence of social support, and perception of benefits. Results show a negative correlation between frequency of participation and Geriatric Depression Scale score (GDS). The wide range of measured frequencies among low GDS-scored subjects suggests that less depressed individuals exercise more freedom of choice to participate than those who are more depressed. Significant finding show a positive correlation of group activity participation with functional status in terms of ambulation. Data shows that the experience of pain was not a significant deterrent to participation. The presence of social support from the staff and family did not increase participation. However there is a lesser GDS score among subjects who had recent family/friends visit suggesting a positive role of family in decreasing depression. These results are significant not only for optimizing group therapeutic effects but also for understanding basic human and environmental correlates of depression. Study limitations are pointed out and recommendations are presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Access to healthcare is needed and wanted by people of all ages and especially by those of the older population. The number of people in the 65 years of age and older population is rapidly growing with their needs expected to have a significant impact on the existing healthcare system and healthcare providers. The impact will be critical given the severe shortage of healthcare providers, especially of nurses and the rate of services being more often provided in non-hospital settings. The objectives of the study were to discover the plans of graduating nursing students as they choose their first place of employment, if they have future plans to pursue a nursing advance practice degree, and if they are very happy with their decision to become a nurse. Data for the study were obtained from a questionnaire presented to senior graduating nursing students. The findings were: (a) Most students prefer a hospital setting. (b) Younger students are three times as likely to seek out the hospital, and 1/3 of the students seek out the hospital setting because they were encouraged to become a nurse. (c) About 70% of the students want to work with their friends while 1/3 will seek the hospital worksite, as it is perceived as being the strongest resource in paying back loans. (d) Nearly 87% are considering the nursing advance practice role, and 52% have interest in the nurse practitioner role. The majority of students identified as very happy with their decision to become a nurse. This study provided insight for schools of nursing as they make curriculum decisions and to businesses as they learn of the preferences and plans of the new emerging nurses.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: Alzheimer Disease International ranked Macao as the highest stage five to develop dementia-friendly community globally. Awareness of dementia care among older people was of great significance for the prevention and early detection of dementia. This study aimed to investigate the awareness of dementia care among community-dwelling older people in Macao. The validated questionnaires investigating the awareness of dementia care, in terms of knowledge, attitude and preventive practice domain, were distributed to older people from 14 randomly selected day centres and community rehabilitation wards in Macao and 408 public samples were collected. The score of the knowledge domain was 58.15+20.95, the attitude was 75.34+7.99, and the preventive practice was 76.10+12.48. Older people’s knowledge (58.15+20.95) was significantly less than the health professionals working in Health Centers (p<0.001) and the staff working in day-care centres and nursing homes in Macao (p<0.001). Older people’s preventive practice (76.10+12.48) was significantly less than the health professionals working in Health Centers in Macao (p<0.01). These findings demonstrated that community-dwelling older people in Macao had less knowledge and less preventive practice of dementia care. More public lectures and education for community-dwelling older people in Macao were recommended strongly to improve their knowledge and preventive practice of dementia care. Abstract (sommario):
The increase in life expectancy and the decrease in fertility rates represent the new demographic census in Brazil and in the world. The main consequence of population aging is mainly the new challenges in the treatment of pathologies resulting from advancing age and how to treat our new elderly. Among the existing geriatric diseases, the occurrence of Urinary Incontinence (UI) and Fecal Incontinence (FI) is common, representing a challenge to health professionals, especially nursing. Given this scenario, how prepared is the nursing team to face these pathologies? Objective: To analyze the knowledge of nurses in the identification of Urinary and Fecal Incontinence in institutionalized elderly people. Method: this is a cross-sectional and descriptive research, with quantitative analysis. It was carried out in a Long-Term Care Institution for the Elderly with nurses, who agreed to participate in the research. Data collection took place in the first week of September 2023, on alternating days and shifts to include all employees of the institution. The data were organized into tables and imported into an Excel file for analysis by the researchers. Results: The sociodemographic results showed that most of the team was composed of nurses with more than 5 years of training, more than 10 years of work experience, and the vast majority did not have postgraduate, master's or doctoral degrees. The specific results showed that most nurses recognize FI and IA, but do not recognize the role of nurses in intervening in the pathological process, considering it as normal due to advancing age. Conclusion: Nurses are involved daily in daily practices aimed at institutionalized elderly people, making it important to have a qualified stomatherapist who can assist in conducting FI and IU. In addition, the need for research to strengthen this theme is highlighted.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Background: Geriatric depression is a mental and emotional disorder affecting older adults. Social support is an important factor known to moderate the deleterious effects of stress in elderly. This study aimed to determine factors affecting depression symptom in the elderly using PRECEDE PROCEED model. Subjects and Method: A cross sectional study was conducted in Surakarta, Central Java. A sample of 200 elderly was selected for this study by cluster random sampling. The dependent variable was depression. The independent variables were gender, marital status, residence, education, family support, and peer support. The data were collected by questionnaire and analyzed by a multiple linear regression run on Stata 13. Results: The risk of depression in elderly increased with female (b= 5.53; 95% CI= 3.38 to 7.70; p<0.001), unmarried (b= 4.15; 95% CI=1.36 to 6.95; p= 0.004), and living at nursing home (b= 8.16; 95% CI= 5.26 to 11.06; p<0.001). The risk of depression decreased with high education (b= -5.51; 95% CI= -7.49 to -3.51; p<0.001), strong peer support (b= -2.75; 95% CI= -4.92 to -0.58; p= 0.013), and strong family support (b= -5.02; 95% CI= -7.96 to -2.09; p<0.001). Conclusion: The risk of depression in elderly increases with female, unmarried, and living at nursing home. The risk of depression decreases with high education, strong peer support, and strong family support. Keywords: depression, elderly Correspondence: Zela Tunurrohmin. Abstract (sommario):
1 BackgroundBased on the current structural shortage of labor force and serious shortage of caregivers in China's elderly and medical services [1], the future demand for elderly care services for the elderly population is also increasingly strong [2]. At present, the proportion of Chinese elderly people living in elderly care institutions is 0.73%, which reflects that there are still some obstacles to the general acceptance of elderly care institutions by Chinese elderly people. Combined with the theory of environmental psychology, it can be seen that the environment can have an impact on behavior, psychology and other aspects, so the scientific shaping of space is inextricably linked to the enhancement of the user's spatial acceptance. Based on this, this study discusses the development history, development status and future development trend of nursing home design in China, and explores the innovative development path of nursing home design in the future. It aims to improve the acceptance and willingness to use nursing homes by the elderly and their families through optimization at the design level, so as to alleviate the current aging problem in China and the world.2 MethodDesign form language, is a kind of abstract language that can cover the design concept, design strategy, is a logical combination of structure, color, material and other figurative language in design. The change of design form language is often closely related to the change of user needs, the development of the industry now, etc. Citespace can present the structure of knowledge, the situation of information in the form of graphical distribution [3], and combined with the resulting graphs to analyze the disciplinary structure of the field of study related to the discipline structure, the hot frontier and other laws [4]. In view of the fact that the keyword maps that can be directly generated by importing literature data in Citespace cannot accurately represent the design form language explored in this study, this study organizes the design form language of each piece of literature in the valid title data for the titles, keywords, and abstracts of the 253 pieces of literature in the CNKI database, respectively.3 ResultThis study combines the data processing results of the design form language to produce three results related to the development of nursing home design in China. First, the development history of nursing home design in China is divided into three stages: the "starting period", the "high speed development period" and the "innovation enlightenment period", and there is still much room for development. Secondly, from the current development status of Chinese nursing home design, the concentration of current research is high, which also proves that the innovation of Chinese nursing home design is low at this stage. In addition, the research hotspots are mainly "people-oriented" and "integration of medical and nursing care", which reflects the current Chinese nursing home design's emphasis on the physiological and psychological needs of the elderly, and conforms to the current Chinese government's guidelines for nursing homes. Thirdly, "multi-dimensional consideration of user needs", "optimization of nursing home living mode through spatial design", and "exploration of cutting-edge fields" are proposed, The four suggestions on the direction of future development of nursing home design in China are "multi-dimensional consideration of users' needs", "optimization of living mode through spatial design", "exploration of frontier fields", and "in-depth combination of theory and practice".4 ConclusionThis study applies Citespace to analyze the literature about design form language visualization mapping in the field of Chinese nursing home design in the past 15 years, and according to the changing law of design form language, we have launched a study on the development history, development status, and future development trend of China's nursing home design, and obtained four directions of the future of China's nursing home design that are worth developing and studying in depth, which provides a directional guideline for the research of China's nursing home design.References[1] Zuo Meiyun.
