Abstract (sommario):

The development of the Geologisch-Paläontologisches Institut und Museum of the Museum für Naturkunde at the Humboldt University (formerly Friedrich-Wilhelm-Universität) in Berlin from a geology-paleontology institution to a pure paleontology institution is described. The first two directors of the department in the beginning of the 20th century, Prof, von Branca and Prof. Pompeckj, represented a 19th century concept of a geology, which included paleontology, even vertebrate paleontology as the crown jewel of geology. They fought sometimes vigorously against a separation of paleontology from geology. The next two directors. Prof. Stille and Prof, von Bubnoff, were the leading geologists in Germany; to be a student of Stille was a special trade mark in geology of Germany. They represented a geology centered on tectonics. The separation of paleontology as separate section was prepared. The destructions of the Second World War, the following restaurations and the division of Germany into two States influenced strongly their directorships. The education of geologists at the Museum für Naturkunde ended with the III. University Reform of the German Democratic Republik in 1968. Paleontology was represented by the international renown vertebrate paleontologist, Prof. Dr. W. Gross, up to 1961. Since 1969, paleobotany was strengthened by the inclusion of the paleobotany unit of the Akademie der Wissenschaften into the museum. After reunification of Germany n 1990, the department was rebuild as a Institut für Palaontologie with close connection to biology, a unique situation in Germany. Two professorships, one for paleozoology, Prof. Schultze. and one for paleobotany, Prof. Mai, were established. The number of curators increased to ten from one under the first director of the 20th century.

doi:10.1002/mmng.20040070103

Abstract (sommario):
This paper explores geology in Germany during the Third Reich, 1933–1945. It deals with the effect of the political regime on the daily life in institutes and universities, with victims, perpetrators and bystanders, with geologists supporting the regime with their expertise in administration, economy and military, with ideological influences on geology as such and most of all with German geologists of that time and the broad spectrum of attitudes they cultivated.

Abstract (sommario):
The German Geophysical Society (Deutsche Geophysikalische Gesellschaft, DGG) was founded in 1922 in Leipzig, Germany, on the initiative of the famous German seismologist Emil Wiechert (1861–1928), known for his fundamental work to record earthquake waves to study the earth's interior. Facing the German historical background of the early 20th century, the 24 founding members wanted to lead German geophysicists out of isolation and toward outreaching activities. DGG always understood and defined geophysics as a discipline beyond political borders, religious belief, or race, and promoted the scientific exchange between geophysicists in the Federal Republic of Germany, the former German Democratic Republic, and internationally.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractSince the beginning of the development of the North German Basin in Stephanien to Early Rotliegend times, rifting played a major role. Nearly all structures in NW-Germany and the German North Sea - (more than 800) - salt diapirs, grabens, inverted grabens and inversion structures - are genetically related to rifting. Today, the rifting periods are well dated. We find signs of dilatation at all times except from the Late Aptian to the end of the Turonian. To the contrary, the period of the Coniacian and Santonian, lasting only five million years was a time of compression, transpression, crustal shortening and inversion. Rifting activities decreased notably after inversion in Late Cretaceous times. Tertiary movements concentrated on a limited number of major, long existing lineaments. Seismically today NW-Germany and the German North Sea sector is one of the quietest regions in Central Europe.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. Polar research is an interdisciplinary and multi-faceted field of research ranging from history to geology and geophysics to social sciences and education. Thus, several different universities and institutions within Germany participate in polar research. The seminar series POLARSTUNDE, organized by the German Society for Polar Research (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschung) and the German National Committee of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS Germany) regularly features different topics of German polar research. Although initially a “pandemic solution”, the seminar series has established itself as a valuable and highly successful part of the German polar research landscape. The seminar series was held in German and was aimed at both scientists and the general public. This article addresses the first season of POLARSTUNDE and provides (1) comprehensive summaries of the talks and (2) insight into the planning and execution from an organizational point of view.

Abstract (sommario):
A special collection of German, Polish, and Russian language books, maps and reports in the US Geological Survey Library has an interesting and unusual history. The so-called ‘Heringen Collection’ came from Nazi Germany. Many of these items were captured from libraries, offices and even private homes as the German Army advanced into neighboring countries. In the last days of the war, these maps, reports, photos and other records were sent from the Military Geology offices in Berlin to the safety of a deep potash mineshaft in Heringen (Werra), in Hessen, Germany. A group of US Army soldiers found these lost records of the Third Reich. When removed from the Heringen mine, those records that dealt with the earth sciences, terrain analysis, military geology and other geological matters were sent to the USGS, and eventually came to reside at the USGS Library. The printed papers and books were mostly incorporated into the main collection, but a portion of the materials have never been cataloged, calendared or indexed. These materials have many current uses, including projects of value to citizens in their nations of origin.

Mohr, Barbara, e Annette Vogt. "German Women Paleobotanists From the 1920S to the 1970S—Or Why Did This Story Start So Late?" Earth Sciences History 20, n. 1 (1 gennaio 2001): 14–43. http://dx.doi.org/10.17704/eshi.20.1.q7643x2308728m56.

Abstract (sommario):
This study documents women paleobotanists and their achievements from the late 1920s to the early 1970s in Germany. More than forty women were involved in paleobotanical research and related fields during this period. After they had finished their degrees, about two thirds of them left the field for private, political, and/or economic reasons. Several of them, however, had a successful career or were even leaders in their field. Compared with other disciplines and neighbouring countries, the unusually late entry of women students into this discipline from the 1930s on is explained by the close affiliation of the discipline with Paleozoic geology and mining in Germany before 1945. It is significant that of the thirteen women who finished a degree in the field before 1945, about two thirds studied Quaternary pollen analysis and vegetation history. Only a minority was involved in pre-Quaternary paleobotany. After World War II, the number of women scientists increased noticeably only when Tertiary palynology/paleobotany became more important sub-disciplines of paleobotany, a pattern which was similar in both parts of the newly divided country. During the period between 1945 and 1955, the number of women students in West Germany was significantly higher than in the East. This is partly explained by the policies of the East German communist party, which put restrictions on women students from a middle-class background. Between 1955 and 1973 the number of women students in East Germany exceeded those in the West. This was due to the East German party policy of activating the female working force, especially in fields which had been traditionally occupied by men, such as geology, mining, and engineering.

Abstract (sommario):
The lithostratigraphy of the mid Cretaceous of north-east England (Speeton, South Ferriby and Hunstanton) is revised and a number of new terms are introduced. The following formations are accepted: Speeton Clay Formation, Skegness Clay Formation, Sutterby Marl Formation, Langton Sand Formation (new), Carstone Formation, Hunstanton Red Chalk Formation, Speeton Chalk Formation (new) and Welton Chalk Formation. The Ferriby Chalk Formation is rejected as it includes the Red Chalk which has always been treated historically as a separate unit. New members (Buckton and Bempton members) are introduced for subdivision of the Welton Chalk Formation. The detailed macrofossil biostratigraphy of the late Barremian to Lower Turonian is presented and the age of the various lithostratigraphic units determined. A biostratigraphic framework is employed that relates the traditional ammonite zonation with other macrofossil zonal schemes (belemnites, inoceramids, brachiopods) and a large number of bioevents. The Speeton Oay Formation ranges in age from the Berriasian to the Lower Albian inclusive (previous ages including the Middle and Upper Albian are based on fallen material from the Red Chalk). The Hunstanton Red Chalk Formation ranges from the Middle Albian to the early Lower Cenomanian. The Speeton Chalk ranges from the early Lower Cenomanian to the late Upper Cenomanian. The Welton Chalk ranges in age from the late Upper Cenomanian into the Turonian. The microfaunal (foraminifera and ostracoda) biostratigraphy of the Upper Barremian to the late Middle Cenomanian is studied in detail. The foraminiferal succession at Speeton differs from the successions in the Anglo-Paris Basin and shows affinity with the successions in the Southern North Sea Basin and north-west Germany. A correlation between the detailed macrofossil and microfossil biostratigraphies is demonstrated and a revised foraminiferal zonation proposed. The ostracod succession is of high biostratigraphic value in the Aptian, but the diachronous appearance of many species renders ostracods less valuable for correlation in the Albian. In the Cenomanian ostracods are largely excluded for paleeoecological reasons. Detailed correlations of the succession at Speeton with successions on the East Midlands Shelf, in the Anglo-Paris Basin, Southern North Sea and north-west Germany are demonstrated. In the Cenomanian the chalks at Speeton are distinctly rhythmic and a total of forty-three rhythms can be correlated bed-for-bed between Speeton and the Anglo-Paris Basin by using key marker horizons. The distribution of regionally important erosion surfaces and calcarenitic chalks is used to construct sea-level charts for the mid-Cretaceous. Stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen have been studied from the late Lower Cenomanian to the early Turonian at Speeton. During this interval al3c excursions are directly associated with the initial flooding surfaces following sequence boundaries. A detailed study of the rnid-Cretaceous foraminiferal palreoecology of north-east England is undertaken and a number of assemblages related to water depth and different watermasses are recognised. The watermasses reflect changes in oceanic circulation either promoting or restricting the passage of warm Tethyan derived currents into the North Sea via the Polish Trough. A study of the macrofaunal palaeoecology recognises the existence of events when characteristic faunal elements appear. These events are invariably related to sea-level fluctuations and the relative positioning of watermasses, with the influx of cold water faunas at the times of the development of a North Sea Watermass. Appendix 1 presents paleeontological results. A number of new species of macroand microfossil are formally described, while many other forms are left under open nomenclature. A detailed analysis of belemnite biometries is provided and their biostratigraphic value demonstrated. Appendix 2 provides detailed descriptions of all the sections studied in north-east England as many of these are difficult to access and poorly exposed.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. PANGAEA (Planetary ANalogue Geological and Astrobiological Exercise for Astronauts) is a field training course designed by the European Space Agency (ESA) that, since 2016, has imparted to ESA and NASA astronauts, and Roscosmos cosmonauts the basic theoretical and practical knowledge of geology and astrobiology and trained them in the field. Hence developing independent field skills, including working with a remotely located science team, is a key part of the training. For this reason, classroom and field lessons are tightly interwoven so that the concepts introduced in the classroom are shown in the field soon afterwards. The primary field sites selected for the course are the Permo-Triassic sedimentary sequences in the Italian Dolomites, analogue to the Martian alluvial plains ones, the impact geological environment of the Ries Crater, Germany, a comprehensive suite of volcanic emplacements and deposits in Lanzarote, Spain, and the anorthosite outcrops, analogue to lunar highlands rocks, in Lofoten, Norway. Each site is used as a base to deliver the main learning sessions, respectively: 1) Earth geology, rock recognition and sedimentology on Earth and Mars, 2) Lunar geology and impact cratering, 3) volcanism on Earth, Moon, and Mars, and astrobiology 4) intrusive rocks and lunar primordial crustal evolution. The four sessions are designed to increase the trainees’ autonomy in the field up to autonomously executed geological traverses including sampling activities. Whilst PANGAEA’s primary focus is astronaut training, where appropriate, technologies being developed for future missions are used to evaluate their performances in analogue field envi-ronments and to train the astronauts in using technologies that might support future missions.

Abstract (sommario):
Nexia Solutions are currently running a small European network entitled “European Network on the Determination of Site End Points for Radiologically Contaminated Land (ENDSEP)”. Other network members include NRG (Netherlands), UKAEA (UK), CEA (France), SOGIN (Italy), Wismut (Germany), Saxon State Agency of Environment and Geology (Germany). The network is focused on the technical and socio-economical issues associated with the determination of end points for sites potentially, or actually, impacted by radiological contamination. Such issues will cover: • Those associated with the run up to establishing a site end point; • Those associated with verifying that the end points have been met; and • Those associated with post closure. The network’s current high level objectives can be summarized as follows: • Share experience and best practice in the key issues running up to determining site end points; • Gain a better understanding of the potential effects of recent and forthcoming EU legislation; • Assess consistency between approaches; • Highlight potential gaps within the remit of site end point determination and management; and • Consider the formulation of research projects with a view to sharing time and expense. The programme of work revolves around the following key tasks: • Share information, experience and existing good practice. • Look to determine sustainable approaches to contaminated land site end point management. • Through site visits, gain first hand experience of determining an appropriate end point strategy, and identifying and resolving end point issues. • Highlight the key data gaps and consider the development of programmes to either close out these gaps or to build confidence in the approaches taken. • Production of position papers on each technical area highlighting how different countries approach/resolve a specific problem.

Abstract (sommario):
SO277 OMAX served two scientific projects. The objectives of the first project, SMART, were to develop multi-disciplinary methodologies to detect, quantify, and model offshore groundwater reservoirs in regions dominated by carbonate geology such as the Mediterranean Sea. To this end we acquired controlled-source electromagnetic, seismic, hydroacoustic, geochemical, seafloor imagery data off Malta. Preliminary evaluation of the geophysical data show that there are resisitivity anomalies that may represent offshore freshwater aquifers. The absence of evidence for offshore springs means that these aquifers would be confined and that it will be difficult to use them in a sustainable manner. The objective of the second project, MAPACT-ETNA, is to monitor the flank of Etna volcano on Sicily which is slowly deforming seaward. Here, we deployed six seafloor geodesy stations and six ocean bottom seismometers for long-term observation (1-3 years). In addition, we mapped the seafloor off Mt. Etna and off the island of Stromboli to constrain the geological processes that control volcanic flank stability.
