Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Grammatical and lexical cohesion are necessary conditions to guarantee a text’s coherence (Halliday and Hasan 1976). Grammatical cohesion is classified into four types of relation: reference, conjunction, substitution, and ellipsis. This study aims to investigate the use of the cohesive device of reference in written discourse produced by users/learners of French as a foreign language, to explore the kind of references they prefer and to highlight the difficulties they come across. Our study is based on a learner corpus composed of written productions of Greek-speaking users/learners of French who participated in National Foreign Language Exam System (Κρατικό Πιστοποιητικό Γλωσσομάθειας, ΚΠΓ). We used a sample of texts produced by candidates who participated in the examination willing to be certified at the levels B (Independent user) and C (Proficient user) of language proficiency according to the 6-level scale of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe 2001).

Abstract (sommario):
The article deals with the problem of choosing innovative methods of teaching foreign languages in higher education. One of them recognizes the reconstructive-associative method as the most relevant in the conditions of modern globalization, characterized by a variety of cultures and a variety of languages, i.e. plurilingualism. The method is based on the concept of a bridge language, a connecting language or an intermediary language, proposed by the European Understanding program. This approach involves the use of English or French when teaching a number of Germanic/Romance languages. At the level of teaching foreign languages in Russian universities, the concept of a bridge language is promising when developing training programs for a bilingual audience. At the same time, it is transformed into the concept of the reference language, which in our country is usually Russian. It is recognized that the supporting language does not have to be native. Its role can be the first foreign language, for example, English when teaching a second foreign language (French) language. The proposed innovative approach opens up promising horizons of both educational and didactic and methodological plans for innovative teachers who are able to respond to the challenges of the modern world with their creativity and high language competence.

Molendijk, Arie, e Henriette E. de Swart. "Frequency and Tense Use in French". Tense and Aspect 12 (31 dicembre 1998): 43–60. http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/bjl.12.04mol.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. This paper deals wilh the use of Ihe passé simple and the imparfait of French in frequentative sentences. It is argued that frequency implies sentence-internal quantification, meaning that frequentative sentences report just one (complex) eventuality. This claim is related to the fact that, as far as establishing temporal relationships between eventualities is concerned, sentences containing frequency adverbs behave like sentences that don't imply quantification at all. So they may establish all kinds of temporal relationships between eventualities. Given the claims put forward in this paper about the temporal meaning of the passe* simple and the imparfait (Molendijk 1990), it naturally follows that, as a general rule, frequency adverbs combine with both tenses. But they do not always do so under exactly the same circumstances. In this regard, a distinction can be made between dependent frequency adverbs {tout le temps 'all the time' etc.), which imply reference to a contextually determinable concrete situation, and independent ones (toujours 'always', etc.), which may be used without any reference to such a situation. This distinction helps us to understand, for instance, why dependent frequency adverbs do not easily combine with the 'absolute' (non-narrative) passe simple, whereas they do combine with the imparfait and the 'narrative' passé simple.

Abstract (sommario):
The progress of technology and the complete integration of its products in our daily lives is now a reality. In addition to this, more and more young children now own their personal mobile devices, most of which have a connection to the internet. These new portable devices offer unlimited possibilities to their users, yet they also create more and more challenges in the field of learning. Inevitably, Mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) as a subcategory of Mlearning is also affected. The purpose of this paper is to present students' perceptions on the use of an application in the process of learning French as a foreign language. To this end, we developed an application for mobile devices in real teaching conditions, which respects the principles of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Experimental quantitative research was carried out in order to explore the students' experience concerning the application as a portable learning tool, completely integrated into the course. The target group we addressed was international students from various countries in Europe, Asia and America, who were taught French during a language immersion program, as part of a language stay in Saint Raphaël in France.

"Verbal representation of kinemas in the lexicography and space of a literary text (based on the material of Russian and French literature of the XIX–XX centuries)". Philological Sciences. Abstract (sommario):
This article analyses the verbalization of kinemas: the choice of ways and means of their verbal representation in literary texts and dictionaries. Russian -Russian and French-language literature of the 19th and 20th centuries of different genres (dramatic, epic (novels, novellas, short stories, detective stories, plays), as well as Russian-French explanatory dictionaries) were used as the material for the study. The authors used the following contexts: descriptions of verbal representations of kinemas, extracted from modern and classical Russian and French-language literature of the XIX–XX centuries. The analyzed material in lexicography allows us to draw the following conclusions: the frequency of verbalization of the kineme in the Russian language with the reference word "eyes"(250; 45%); in the French language, the most frequent are kinemas with the reference word "hand" (154; 34,2%). The study of modern and classical fiction gives grounds to state that in French texts the frequency of verbalization of kinemas containing a description of gestures is 40%, in Russian texts 30,7%. The most representative are complex RRCS in Russian fiction — 42,4%, and in French texts there is a clear predominance of verbalization of kinemas containing a description of facial expression — 44,2%. It should be noted that the national speech behavior of an individual is determined not only and not so much by his psychological mood and communication conditions, but by his belonging to a certain linguistic and cultural community, which has its own cultural space, cultural interior of the situation, and all this is consistently reflected in the literary text.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to identify the strategies through which French-language profanity is translated into Indonesian by using a corpus of data drawn from the dialogues of the French film Banlieue 13 and its Indonesian subtitles. The data were collected through certain steps started with watching the film, noting each use of French-language profanity and its Indonesian translation, then classifying those data based on Davoodi's proposed categories of profanity translation strategies. This study finds that four strategies were used for translating French profanity to Indonesian: censorship (as in the term 'bordel', which was left untranslated), substitution (as in the term 'putain', translated as 'astaga'), taboo (as in the term 'merde', translated as 'sial'), and also euphemism (as in the term 'merde', translated as 'hal buruk'). Furthermore, the result shows that both French and Indonesian language profanity is often used in reference to situations and occupations considered taboo in society.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Molière’s farce Les Précieuses ridicules (1659) contains a vast selection of formulaic expressions. The play serves as a historical reference for the identification of formulaic language influenced by a period called the préciosité, originating in 17th-century France. Based upon a survey of French native speakers, this paper will deal with the question of whether these formulaic expressions have left traces upon present day French. Given the empirical evidence, one must conclude that the majority of these expressions are widely known and are in general use today. Furthermore, the hypothesis that such expressions predominate in higher-register French (cf. Klare 2011: 126) is confirmed.

Abstract (sommario):
Summary This article examines the approaches to grammatical gender in Northern Iroquoian languages, ranging from the earliest references made by French missionaries in the 1630s to contemporary studies. The author focuses on two motifs in descriptions of Iroquoian gender: the supposedly ‘primitive’ nature of its morphological expression, which was mentioned predominantly in 18th-century accounts of Huron, and the asymmetries between the expression of masculine and feminine reference, which have been the main topic of the accounts of Mohawk, Oneida and Onondaga since the late 19th century. By tracing the two motifs the close links that were established between gender and culture patterns are illustrated, frequently leading to contradictory explanations concerning diachronic scenarios as well as more general impressionistic properties attributed to the languages and their speakers.

Thompson, Jenna. "Dubbing the multilingual moment: Translating English-language American television shows with French into French". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/28445.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Multilingual films, such as Lost in Translation (2003), have recently become a phenomenon. Various popular television series also feature an element of multilingualism in their plots. This inclusion of the cultural "other" and its language, specifically, the dubbing into French of "French situations" in American television shows, presents an interesting challenge for audiovisual translation (AVT). In my study, I begin by discussing research on multilingualism in literature, film and television. I then discuss the relevance of translation studies concepts to AVT, and apply them in examining the dubbing into French of American television shows that include situations involving the French language. I describe and analyze how this challenge has been met, where the "other" in the original is the television viewer for whom the show is translated. My work studies the many different strategies used to deal with a very specific translation problem in the field of AVT.

Abstract (sommario):
In this study, we have explored the prefaces of monolingual English, monolingual French, and bilingual French-English dictionaries of the 17 th century. The monolingual works studied constitute the first of this kind to have been published. Over the course of this research, we have demonstrated that despite different lexicographic traditions, dictionary prefaces convey basically the same type of information, and address the same general issues. This study is divided into two main sections. In the first, we have provided historical information on the dictionaries, so as to illustrate the historical context in which they were published. In the second section, we have examined the prefaces themselves, first giving an overview of each text studied, and then providing a thematic analysis of the prefaces within each group as a whole, observing topics that are commonly treated among them, within the broader categories of dictionary content, lexicographic context, and linguistic context. Over the course of the research, we have established that though each text is unique, certain features are shared not only among the prefaces within one same category, but in fact across all three types of dictionary.

Zaluski, Victoria Amy. "Metaphor-based Internet terms in English and in French". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/4121.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The objectives of this thesis are to analyze (1) how English metaphor-based terms in the Internet domain are formed, and (2) how such terms are being rendered into French. By metaphor-based term (MBT), we mean a term that has derived from a metaphor. MBTs are becoming increasingly frequent and important in computer-related domains. However, they have been rather neglected in the metaphor literature in general, and in the translation literature specifically. The thesis is an attempt to begin filling this gap. Our research involved analyzing MBTs found in English and French corpora pertaining to the Internet, an exceptionally rich source of MBTs. We began by reviewing the concept of metaphor and the various ways terms are created. Drawing partly on these observations, we proposed a general classification of English MBTs in the Internet domain. Next, we investigated the available literature on the translation of metaphor, and applied some of the deriving insights to an analysis of the MBTs in our French corpus. This analysis resulted in a categorization of the various strategies used for rendering English MBTs into French. Finally, we attempted to explain why certain English MBTs may be more easily rendered into French than others.

Alnwick, Marie. "Translating the Buffyverse: Examining French fan response to "Buffy contre les vampires"". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/27568.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Fictional texts represent a particular challenge for translators due to their use of expressive language. The translation of audiovisual texts in particular is complicated by various institutional and technical constraints. As such, assessing the quality of translated televisual fiction is a complex undertaking that requires an approach more flexible than that prescribed by proponents of textual-linguistic models. This thesis looks at translation quality from another angle, that of audience reception. As a case study, this thesis investigates the reception of the French dubbed translation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a popular American television show characterized by its frequent use of illocutionary elements, including wordplay, neologisms and cultural references. One interpretive community's response to the French dubbed translation is examined through the document analysis of a French chat room thread dedicated to the dubbed version of the show. In order to check the legitimacy of fans' claims, a translated episode of Buff the Vampire Slayer is assessed, with posters' comments informing the evaluation criteria. In particular, the target text is evaluated according to its treatment of illocutionary strategies. The results of the document analysis and the translation evaluation are compared to give a multidimensional perspective on the quality of the target text. The evaluation highlights the prevailing tendency of the target text to omit illocutionary elements in favour of neutral paraphrase, and the document analysis suggests that this tendency may in part account for the chat viewers' largely negative response to Buffy the Vampire Slayer's French dubbed translation.

Grüter, Therese. "Object clitics and null objects in the acquisition of French". Thesis, McGill University, 2006. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=102802.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation investigates (direct) object clitics and object omission in the acquisition of French as a first language. It reports on two original empirical studies which were designed to address aspects of object omission in child French that have remained unexplored in previous research. Study 1 investigates the incidence of object omission in the spontaneous speech of French-speaking children aged three and above, an age group for which no analysis, and only little data, have been available so far. Findings show that object omission continues to occur at non-negligible rates in this group. A comparison with age- and language-matched groups of English- and Chinese-speaking children (from Wang, Lillo-Martin; Best & Levitt 1992) suggests that French-speaking children omit objects at higher rates than their English-speaking peers, yet at lower rates than children acquiring a true null object language, such as Chinese. Study 2 was designed to investigate whether French-speaking children would accept null objects on a receptive task, an issue that has not been previously investigated. A series of truth value judgment experiments is developed, adapting an experimental paradigm that has not been used previously in the context of null objects. Results from English- and French-speaking children show that both groups consistently reject null objects on these tasks, a finding that constitutes counterevidence to proposals which attribute object omission in production to a genuine null object representation sanctioned by the child grammar. Overall, the pattern of results turns out not to be consistent with any developmental proposals made in the literature, suggesting that a novel approach is required. Proposing a minimalist adaptation of Sportiche's (1996) analysis of clitic constructions, and taking into consideration the recent emphasis on 'interface' requirements imposed by language-external systems, I put forward a hypothesis for future research, the Decayed Features Hypothesis (DFH), which locates the source of object (clitic) omission in child French in a specific language-external domain, namely the capacity of working memory.

Melvin, Catherine Eda. "Cross-cultural representations: The construction of "America" after September 11th in English Canadian, Quebec and French print media". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/26982.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The cultural turn in Translation Studies is the name given to the shift from an inter-lingual approach to the study of translation to an inter-cultural one. Since the cultural turn, meaning is no longer considered to be reducible to the level of word, sentence or even text within a specific situation of utterance. Instead, culture as a whole is considered to be the prime locus of meaning. Translators, then, are not expected to be simply bilingual, but to be bi-cultural. This thesis is a comparative discourse analysis that explores how pre-existing discourses in English Canada, Quebec and France affect the representation of the United States in print media coverage following terrorist attacks in New York and Washington on September 11th, 2001. More specifically, the impact of the discourse of counter-Americanism in English Canada is analyzed in a corpus of newspaper articles selected from five major Canadian dailies. Similarly, articles from Le Devoir and La Presse are analyzed in relation to the discourse of americanite in Quebec and articles from Le Monde are analyzed in relation to the discourse of anti-Americanism in France. In each case, the construction of an American identity can be traced to the specific geographical, historical, political and economic relationships of each country to the U.S. This means that representations of an American Other serve primarily to support representations of self, thus revealing the relative and constructed nature of national identity. Drawing on scholars in both Cultural Studies and Communications, this study outlines how discourse constructs national identity. In addition, it illustrates how identity discourses affect the construction and interpretation of meaning, thus meriting attention in the field of Translation Studies. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract (sommario):
Pierre Daviault is a household name in the field of translation in Canada. He holds a prominent place thanks to his contribution to the profession itself and to the teaching of professional translation, which he pioneered. He wrote numerous linguistic books to fill a gap in his time---there was no Petit Robert or Robert & Collins in the 1940s. Daviault also developed the very first professional translation course for the University of Ottawa, in the heart of Canada's capital, a bilingual country. Daviault was a published author in other realms of knowledge. His love for the French presence in Canada explains his two biographies of well-known characters of Nouvelle-France. Other works include short stories about famous and less known people of his time and ventures into the literary world in the form of two adventure novels. The entire career of Pierre Daviault spanned from the 1920s to the mid-1960s and revolved around one subject: the French language. Everything he did or created over his long and successful career related, in one way or another, to this passion.

Fortin, Marie. "Anglicisms in the French Language : A comparative study of English loanwords in French from France and Quebec". Thesis, Mid Sweden University, Department of Humanities, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:miun:diva-9220.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

The aim of this study was to find out if there are differences in the use of Anglicisms in the

French language from Quebec and from France. This was done with the help of a well-known

sitcom named Un gars, une fille. The Quebecers and the French have adopted their own

version of this sitcom to their cultures. Nine similar sequences from both countries on the

theme of sports and six different on the theme of renovation/DIY were analyzed. The analysis

concentrated on the English loanwords used by the characters. It was found that the

Quebecers, in the sitcom, used more English loanwords than the French. Both French and

Quebecers employed many loanwords that are considered as integrated into their language,

but they also used loanwords that have a negative connotation because there is a French word

to replace it, but the Anglicisms used appears more fashionable. Finally, it is interesting to

note the divergence of opinions among scholars in the field of study. Where one scholar

considers an Anglicism as a part of the French language (integrated) another scholar deems it

to be a negative influence, a loanword that should not be used.

Modrea, Andreea. "Ideology, subversion and the translator's voice: A comparative analysis of the French and English translations of Guillermo Cabrera Infante's Tres Tristes Tigres". Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/26718.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
For the past twenty years, there has been a growing trend in translation studies to follow a deconstructionist philosophy and give translators authorship of their work. Translation, in this sense, is no longer a target language equivalence of an 'original' text by an author, but rather a creative process of 're-writing.' In this regard, translators have the possibility of showing their own voice in the translation. The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether either of the French or English translators (Albert Bensoussan and Suzanne Jill Levine, respectively) of the Cuban novel Tres Tristes Tigres (Barcelona: 1967) intervened in the text to show their own voices; and in Levine's case, whether this intervention corresponded to a declared ideology of 'subversion.' A systematic analysis of the wordplay in Chapters 16, 17 and 18 of the two translations reveal significant differences. Whereas the French translation has only minor adjustments, the English translation shows a large number of alterations to existing source text wordplay as well as additional instances of wordplay. In the final tally, there are almost twice as many instances of wordplay in Levine's English translation than in the Spanish source text. From the results of the analysis and from Levine's own self-portrayal in her book The Subversive Scribe (St. Paul: 1991), it would appear that her extensive intervention in the text is ideologically motivated. However, closer examination of circumstances surrounding the actual translation process reveals that the author, Guillermo Cabrera Infante, greatly influenced the final 're-writing.' Therefore, Levine's translation was not so much subversion as it was a sub-version of the original.

Abstract (sommario):
Linguistic theorizing has revised the switch metaphor of parameters as being part of Universal Grammar. Within an epigenetic approach to language (Biberauer et al., 2014; Roberts, 2019), parameters result from the interaction of innate (linguistic) knowledge and universal non-language-specific cognitive optimization strategies, which are set in relation to the child’s experience. Languages vary at different levels of granularity (Baker, 2014), which is expressed in a parameter taxonomy, more particularly in parameter hierarchies (Roberts, 2019) distinguishing macro-, meso-, micro-, and nanoparameters (Biberauer et al., 2014). In the context of multilingualism, Mac Swan (2000) has argued that some components of the architecture of the language faculty are duplicated in multilingual children, while others are not. Parameter hierarchies, defined as previously, belong to the non-duplicated components. Therefore, multilingual children set the parameters simultaneously for all their different languages at the relevant level of variation. Taken together, these assumptions can account for acceleration effects exceeding monolingual limits in multilingual French as a non-null-subject language, if (one of) the other language(s) is a null-subject language like Italian or Spanish for example. The results reported come from longitudinal studies of balanced as well as unbalanced multilingual children during early stages of language development (from 1;6 until the age of 5) and cross-sectional studies of multilingual children at similar ages.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIt has been pointed out that thinking and speaking about violence is paradoxical. Violence, like evil in general, appears to be characterised by absurdity and irrationality. Moreover, violence is not a subject that we can contemplate freely, something that we can think about, but something that we are against and thus think against. Violence seems primarily to demand that we combat it rather than reflect on it. But how can we be sure that our battle against violence is not in itself violent, or whether in fact it needs to be in order to succeed? And what does that imply for our engagement? Based on three short texts by three contemporary French authors—Eric Weil, Emmanuel Levinas and Paul Ricoeur—this chapter explores several avenues in pursuit of answers to the unanswerable question of what violence actually is, in a quest to attain the unattainable and conquer violence.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper investigates reference production by bilingual and monolingual children. We focus on the degree to which the activation of referents is encoded by different types of referring expressions among bilinguals and monolinguals. The study is based on forty-six story retellings produced in German by twenty-five Greek-German bilingual children and twenty-one monolingual children, respectively. The activation of referents is assessed based on a multi-factorial analysis of cognitive and linguistic factors that are involved in the use of referring expressions. The results show that pronouns produced by bilingual children tend to encode a lower degree of activation of referents and to be underspecific. This may be an effect of reduced processing speed experienced by bilinguals in the mapping of the referent’s activation onto the use of a certain referring expression. More in general, we account for the observed differences between bilinguals and monolinguals in terms of cognitive mechanisms underlying bilingual language production.

AbstractThe law guarantees the regular functioning of the nation and society. In recent years, legal artificial intelligence (legal AI), which aims to apply artificial intelligence techniques to perform legal tasks, has received significant attention. Legal AI can provide a handy reference and convenient legal services for legal professionals and non-specialists, thus benefiting real-world legal practice. Different from general open-domain tasks, legal tasks have a high demand for understanding and applying expert knowledge. Therefore, enhancing models with various legal knowledge is a key issue of legal AI. In this chapter, we summarize the existing knowledge-intensive legal AI approaches regarding knowledge representation, acquisition, and application. Besides, future directions and ethical considerations are also discussed to promote the development of legal AI.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract With the rapid development of nuclear power, its safety has attracted more and more attention. In the event of a nuclear accident, once the leakage of radioactive material occurs, it will pose a huge threat to the surrounding environment and the economy and safety of human. In this case, the rapid and accurate evaluation of pollutant dispersion and radiation dose of offsite consequences can guide the decision of nuclear emergency, including the public emergency response and rescue operations. It can also provide the best solution of routes for public evacuation and rescue entrance. The limitation of radioactive accident consequences is essential to protect property security and public safety. In this paper, a real-time evaluation program for offsite dose for nuclear emergency system is developed. The selected for atmospheric dispersion model is the segmented Gaussian model (SGM). Diffusion, advection, plume rise, dry deposition, wet deposition, decay, etc. are considered and FORTRAN language is used for the development. For code-to-code comparison, C3X, the French general offsite dose evaluation program, is chosen as the reference. In the release of changing weather conditions, the simulation results are consistent with C3X, which demonstrates the validity and reliability of program. This paper makes also a nuclear emergency simulation for the changing weather conditions. The results show that the program can precisely calculate the plume nuclides concentration, ground concentration and dose in different time and space. It can also accurately divide the dose area for public emergency guide and rescue operations.

Abstract (sommario):
Even though variation is an inherent element of language and its different aspects have been the subject of numerous studies, its didactization in Second Language classrooms remains, in general, marginal. The context of teaching variation in a French as a Second Language (FSL) classroom in Ontario (Canada) is even more complex. What kind of French to teach: European or Canadian? What is the place of local varieties of Canadian French? This paper investigates the sociolinguistic variation in the speech of first-year FSL students in a Canadian university who have learned their second language primarily in an educational context. A range of social factors that influence sociolinguistic competence are explored. Pedagogical implications of observed results are discussed. Designing didactic materials that value work on varieties of spoken French is emphasized. The role of CEFR-oriented professional development in FSL teaching is highlighted.

Abstract (sommario):
The present Chinese nuclear program is developing vastly and rapidly. The main type of nuclear units under construction currently is the improved generation II PWR (G2+). Taking into account that G2+ is designed based on French M310 type, and one of the technical bases and guidance that NNSA uses to evaluate G2+ is the French RCC codes, AFCEN has authorized CNPRI to translate RCC codes into Chinese version and publish them, in order to facilitate Chinese manufacturers to better apply RCC codes. CNPRI organizes several sub-groups to perform translation, revise, publication and coordination working groups, meanwhile AFCEN provides technical support. Translation is realized based on RCC codes English version, with some reference of French version. Translators work with professional technical background and knowledge, in case of non-clear understanding, including language and technical issues, they raise question list to AFCEN experts for clarification, afterward the answers and comments are merged accordingly into Chinese version translation, to assure the accuration, better understanding and the guidance to Chinese G2+ program.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article we outline our practices for the inclusion of electronic translation devices in specialized French language courses and reflect upon the changing landscape of language teaching. We describe how the use of Google Translate can increase students' awareness of linguistic, stylistic, and cultural differences in our culturally and linguistically diverse clasrooms. Although we characterize our didactic approach as action based, we differenciate our use of this approach from its common use in general language courses and point out the usefulness of intellectualizing it based on our use of Google Translate in work-place-oriented courses. Furthermore, we use our experience with action based approaches and translation devices to answer the following questions: why are students still learning languages; what are the language skills that they are interested in; and what is the role of a teacher in this new world of quasi-magic linguistic tools.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A knowledge-based program defines the behavior of an agent by combining primitive actions, programming constructs and test conditions that make explicit reference to the agent’s knowledge. In this paper we consider a setting where an agent is equipped with a Description Logic (DL) knowledge base providing general domain knowledge and an incomplete description of the initial situation. We introduce a corresponding new DL-based action language that allows for representing both physical and sensing actions, and that we then use to build knowledge-based programs with test conditions expressed in the epistemic DL. After proving undecidability for the general case, we then discuss a restricted fragment where verification becomes decidable. The provided proof is constructive and comes with an upper bound on the procedure’s complexity.

Abstract (sommario):
The article a study of the standard aspect of vocabulary usage in modern Ukrainian newspaper publications. Based on the analysis of the reference literature, the article examines the cases of conjugation of the noun quantity with the verbs to increase and to grow, as well as to decrease, to lower, to shrink, to fall in the publications of the newspaper «Den’». This newspaper is one of the most popular publications in the rating of national media. There are a lot of doubts about the proper usage of these linguistic expressions in the editorial work. The research is predetermined by the need to establish word meanings (based on the editorial practice), which is not specifically delineated in the reference literature, and to give variants of their proper usage. It is accented that the noun quantity should be used with the verbs to increase/decrease. It is noted that to indicate the amount of someone or something, the word quantity should be written, not a number. The selected examples (about 40 sentence constructions) are given the correct answers. Linguistic literacy of an individual as well as of a society in general and opinion expression depends on the selection of linguistic expressions by journalists, since linguistic mistakes in periodical newspapers, radio or TV tend to spread through the language and are required subconsciously. It is emphasized that the accuracy of word usage depends on the availability, aesthetic impact and effectiveness of newspaper publications. Keywords: incorrect/correct usage, conjugation, dictionaries, editorial practice, newspaper publications.
