Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of the research is to evaluate whether a simple ?add gender and stir? approach with Hirschi?s social control theory can help explain gender differences or the gender gap in delinquency. I propose that incorporating traditional gender ideologies into the traditional ?add gender and stir? approach can help extend the theory and lead to a better understanding of the gender gap. Using data from the National Youth Survey, I empirically assess the differences in the levels (means) and the effects that attachment to family, commitment to school and/or a future career, and acceptance of traditional gender ideologies have on delinquency. The findings suggest that although Hirschi?s theory offers insight into why males and females engage in delinquent behavior, it does little to explain the gender gap in delinquency. Specifically, having ?stakes in conformity? curbs delinquency among both males and females. However, the data shows that these stakes in conformity do not help understand the gender gap per se. The findings also suggest that the acceptance of traditional gender ideologies play an important part in understanding the gender gap in delinquency because these ideologies promote delinquency among males but control female delinquency. These findings underscore arguments that the ?add gender and stir? approach to understanding the gender gap in delinquency is insufficient. Future research should continue to explore broad gender arguments derived from gender studies.

Alexander, Alyssa Jane. "Differences in German Youth Gender Ideologies: The Relationship Between Family Structure and Doing Gender". BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6541.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Gender ideologies, which are constantly changing, are important for many outcomes in life, but the majority of gender ideology research focuses mainly on adults. Past research studying adult gender ideologies finds that adults' current relationship status affects their ideologies. For instance, divorced adults hold egalitarian ideologies more than stable married adults do (Davis, Greenstein and Marks 2007). Researchers attribute this finding to the types of gender behaviors adults perform with their partner or alone. What about youth? Understanding how these ideologies develop earlier in life is important, yet research rarely focuses on youth gender ideologies or their development. My research looks at the effects of family structure on youth gender ideology in Germany (Germany National Educational Panel Study (NEPS); Cohort One N=4,181; Cohort Two N=9,913). I argue it is through doing gender that family structures operate to influence the development of youth gender ideology, since parents' doing gender behaviors performed with their children vary by family structure. My findings suggest family structure does not matter for doing gender behaviors that parents perform with their children, thereby affecting their gender ideologies. As a result, it is more about other ways adults do gender outside of the home or about the youth themselves. I also find significant effects for females, suggesting females may invest more in the outcomes egalitarian gender ideologies produce. Future research should look at shifts in family structure and duration in various family structures in order to understand family structure's impact on gender ideology for youth.

Mack, Natasha. "Going modern: Circular migration, state aid, and female gender ideologies in Martinique". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290040.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This research project set in the ethnographic context of Martinique features two levels of analysis. At the level of cultural case study, I analyze how circular migration to France (and back) and access to the French welfare system are articulating with female gender ideologies of Martiniquan women. I argue that migration has led migrant women to develop new gender ideologies, but these do not replace their previous ones. Instead, the new ideologies become part of a repertoire and are utilized as befits the cultural context. Gender ideology transformation does not occur. I also demonstrate that a current ideology common to migrants and nonmigrants of a particular age range expresses the "voice" of French state rhetoric dating to the period of intense state-orchestrated migration. Criteria for access to French welfare are shown to be reinforcing among low-income women a "traditional" gender ideology associated with the subordination of women to men. However, I also demonstrate that low-income women are also using the aid in strategic ways to better their lives as part of a pan-Martiniquan ideology advocating creative survival methods. Because these survival strategies are not acceptable to middle class women, class positioning emerges as divisive for a common vision of the modern Martiniquan woman. At the level of language and ideology, I analyze key words that were salient in women's interview speech and that are indexical of female gender ideologies. These words are soumise (submissive), evoluee (evolved), poto mitan (central pillar), and se debrouiller (to manage on one's own). Women's predictable, patterned use of these indexical words in association with particular interpretive frameworks allows both interlocutors to know which ideology to evoke when evaluating a given "kind" of woman. I demonstrate that contradictory ideologies are able to coexist because women use them in conjunction with distinct, rarely overlapping interpretive frameworks. They also coexist because gender ideologies are applied to and by particular women according to women's positioning in society, especially based on age, class, and migration status. I suggest that the rare sites of articulated conflict present an opportunity for ideological innovation that could promote a less subordinate modern Martiniquan woman.

Asima, Prosper Price Delali. "Continuities and discontinuities in gender ideologies and relations : Ghanaian migrants in London". Thesis, University of Sussex, 2010. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/6268/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the interrelationship between migration and gender, exploring the migration trajectory of Ghanaians in London from their motivation to migrate, their settlement patterns and their transnational activities. The study specifically investigates two main questions: firstly, if and how patriarchal gendered ideologies and relations are influenced by the new migration space and how gender interacts with other social differences (e.g. class, nationality, education, legal status) to reconfigure gendered patterns of behaviour in the country of destination? Secondly, how do gender ideologies and practices influence the maintenance of transnational links with migrants' home country and vice versa? The study adopts a multi-sited ethnographic approach to gain an insight into the experiences of migrants. It demonstrates that paid employment, contextual factors and social differentials simultaneously reinforce and transform patriarchal gender relations in different social spaces. The thesis argues that the international division of labour, institutional challenges and socio-economic factors in the new social space of London provide different dilemmas for migrants. These opportunities and constraints lead to contestations and renegotiations which require that migrants reconcile earning with caring. This in turn leads to changes in the relative power and status of women and men in the host country. This study distinguishes the factors leading to gains and losses; shows that Ghanaian migrants are gendered actors; and contributes to disaggregating the persistence or transformations in patriarchal gender relations. The man's position as the breadwinner is often significantly challenged undermining his patriarchal authority in the household. Ghanaian women on the other hand have often been able to gain new access to resources, make life choices and participate in decision making in the households thereby being empowered across space and time. The study contributes to current understanding of empowerment processes by focusing on the role of men in this process, maintaining that socio-cultural and economic factors impact the lives and activities of male and female migrants differentially, reconfiguring patriarchal hierarchies and levelling power relations and decision making processes to more egalitarian patterns. It also argues that the formation of transnational families as a result of ‘split marriages' and children being sent back to the origin country for fostering leads to different gendered outcomes for migrant and non-migrant women, men and children. The study shows that responsibility for production, reproduction and socialisation is divided across national borders, with the performance of financial, emotional and practical support, decision making patterns and power relations negotiated in the transnational social space. The study contributes to deepening understanding of the critical nature of the interplay of the private and public spheres in gender dynamics and its interrelationship with migration, and also demonstrates that childcare has a significant impact on the caring and earning roles of parents, the organisation of households and enhancement of gender equality.

Nishio, Tomoe. "Metadiscursive Construction of Japanese Women's Language: Images and Ideologies". OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/687.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Previous literature discussing Japanese women's language (JWL) has shown that it is an ideal more than an existing genderlect (Inoue 2006; Nakamura 2007). As a social construct, it has been rendered a powerful truth through institutionalized practices and representations as well as individual negotiations. JWL, a cultural knowledge about how women speak, has been dynamically constructed in certain spatio-temporal intersections (Inoue 2003, 2004a, 2004b, 2006; Washi 2004). Mass media have served as one of the influential sites of production and reproduction of the discourses that naturalize indexical orders of JWL of the given temporality. The purpose of this study was to reveal how modern female speakers of Japanese negotiate the presented media discourses and contribute to recontextualization of JWL discourses through metapragmatic narratives. Three participants were asked to analyze the speech styles of two female characters from a TV drama in terms of linguistic femininity, and to discuss what it means to speak feminine to them. The participants' written scene analysis data, individual interviews, and the focus group discussion were triangulated in order to effectively uncover and denaturalize the intertwined discourses of feminine speech and JWL. The participants' metapragmatic narratives were examined based on the principles of the discourse centered approach (Sherzer 1987), shedding light on their dynamic articulations of JWL discourses. The participants' scene analyses in terms of femininity and generalization of what consists of femininity showed both interpersonal and intrapersonal similarities and differences. Simultaneously, the participants' metadiscursive narratives revealed some contradictory discourses around JWL: discourse of JWL in the contemporary Japanese society and discourse of JWL as cultural heritage. In the articulation of these discourses, the imagined continuity of JWL is romanticized as a cultural heritage, so the semiotic value of JWL is that of an icon of an ideal woman. However, the participants also acknowledged the structural transformation of Japanese society and the higher socioeconomic status of modern women, which naturalizes the masculinization of women's speech to keep up with men. These two contrastive discourses make JWL a vicarious language, through which the participants appreciate the continuity of JWL in the future.

Wiley, Jennifer L. "Shakespeare's Influence on the English Gothic, 1791-1834: The Conflicts of Ideologies". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/594386.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Shakespeare's Influence on the English Gothic, 1791-1834: The Conflicts of Ideologies examines why some of the most influential Gothic novels and playwrights of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries frequently alluded to Shakespeare. During a time of great conflict between changing views of religion, class systems, and gender roles, writers of the Gothic addressed these important issues by looking back to Shakespeare's treatment of the conflicted ideologies of his own time. This project begins by examining the links established between the horrors exposed in Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto and The Mysterious Mother and Shakespeare. Walpole's incorporation of unsettling scenes from Shakespeare sets the stage for other Gothic writers to allude to similar Shakespearean quandaries in their own works. The first chapter establishes what is "pre-Gothic" about some of the conflicted ideologies hinted at in Shakespeare's darkest plays. The second chapter explores how Ann Radcliffe and Matthew Gregory Lewis incorporate Shakespearean epigraphs, quotations, and allusions into their own works to confront terrors of the 1790s. The third chapter reveals how P. B. Shelley, in his Zastrozzi, St. Irvyne, and The Cenci responds to worrying questions originally raised Shakespeare. Chapter four focuses on the Romantic era's most renowned female playwright, Joanna Baillie, and her use of Shakespeare to hint at the treatment to which women are still subject in England during her own time. Finally, this study concludes with a brief look at how the threatening implications of the Gothic continue to revisit the dramas of Shakespeare through major works of Gothic fiction from the past 200 years including Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre, Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, and Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. Though the threats of the past might have changed, Shakespeare still plays an important role in speaking to the unresolved ideological conflicts that still haunt the consciousness of Western civilization.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay examines YouTube comments to videos with male and female streaming players of the online game League of Legends. The research carries out a critical discourse analysis with the aim to find gender relevant language in order to analyze ideologies about gender stereotypes among viewers of streamers. The results showed that comments concerning players’ bodies and appearance were more common in comments on female than male players. There was also a higher expectation for female players to match sexual stereotypes close to the imagery of avatars than for male players to do so. Female players received more comments with sexual implications. Both male and female players received offers of sexual acts, but violent acts were only aimed against women. Written comments defending female players showed that there are ideological power struggles between viewers in this specific genre and that some viewers defend the female players’ place in the scene of streamed gaming.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is about gender relations and identities among farming families in a community in the Aveyron region in southern France. More particularly, it is about the ways in which women and men in farming families locate themselves in terms of culturally constructed ideas of femininity and masculinity, and ideas of tradition and modernity. This study is carried out from a feminist perspective and draws on feminist and social and cultural geographies as well as other social science disciplines in order to explore the production and reproduction of patriarchal ideologies by which women are maintained in unequal positions to men in farming families, the farming community, and bureaucratic structures.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Lacy Hotel was a part of the "Great Locomotive Chase", a significant historical event in Kennesaw, Georgia during the Civil War (AD 1861-1864), yet little is known of this site. The Lacy Hotel was a boardinghouse that operated for roughly six years until General William Tecumseh Sherman burned it in 1864. This research utilizes historical records along with archaeological fieldwork in order to provide a more detailed analysis of daily life within the Lacy household. Dominant ideologies influence the roles of women concerning their activities and choices of consumption within the household. Although the results show that the boardinghouse is not a typical household, the social dynamics and consumption are still constrained by the culture and ideology of the time period. In conclusion, this research offers a case study about the role of women on the eve of turmoil and contends that the boardinghouse is emblematic of broader changes within the rural South during the 19th century.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to account for variation on women’s political empowerment in localities during wartime. I draw upon political ideologies and civilian-armed group interaction literature to argue that gender ideologies could explain why some conflict-affected areas have more women’s political empowerment than others. I argue that gender egalitarian ideologies in armed groups leads to specific organizational structure and political discourse where women are allowed to take leadership and political-related roles within the armed groups. More specifically, I argue that gender egalitarian armed groups not only encourage women to take public roles within their group but also to engage in politics in communities under their territorial control through four strategies: ideological meetings, penetration of social and political organization, establishment of social behaviors and infiltration in electoral politics. I test this argument using quantitative sub-national data looking at territorial control of non-state armed groups and number female mayor candidates in Colombia from 1997 to 2007. I expect that guerrilla areas, are more likely to have more female candidates compared with paramilitary areas. Surprisingly, I found an opposite direction, where paramilitary areas have more female candidates compared with guerrilla areas. I offer an alternative explanation based on the qualitative sources in order to account for the unexpected findings.

Abstract (sommario):

One of the common beliefs in American society is that interracial couples transcend race. It is a curious belief considering that there is not a parallel logic that heterosexual couples transcend sexism. Using in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 55 members of heterosexual Black/White intimate couples, I have investigated the internal dynamics involved in maintaining a relationship across race in our racially stratified society in three areas of these couples’ lives: public interactions, racial discussions, and childrearing. Most literature about interracial couples looks at race as the main determinant of the experience of these couples as a unit and as individuals. However, I argue that race, gender and racialized gender ideologies interact to shape how members of heterosexual Black/White intimate couples perceive certain social situations and their options for negotiating social norms and issues. Not only has the intersection of race and gender been under-theorized in research on interracial couples, racialized gender ideologies have been virtually absent. In particular, these racialized ideologies of gender result in situational privilege at different times for Black women and Black men, thus nuancing our understanding of how racism operates

Ferguson, Joshua M. "Queer japanese cinema : a rich and diverse cultural history’s challenge to hegemonic ideologies of gender and sexuality". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/28113.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is a rich and diverse corpus of queer Japanese cinema that relates to Japan’s pre-modern cultural specificities around and apropos of male-male sexuality and non-normative genders. A significant amount of academic work has explored and articulated Japan’s queer past; however, Japan’s queer cinema has largely been ignored and/or overlooked. The first chapter provides my anthropological foundation for male-male sexuality in the samurai class and queer gendered embodiments through the bishōnen and onnagata. In the second chapter, I explore the West’s (particularly, America’s) ideological influence on Japan in terms of gender and sexuality. This Western influence managed to obliterate Japan’s queer cultural history. This chapter will investigate the reason behind Japan’s assimilation of Western ideologies in relation to gender and sexuality. In the third chapter, I construct a theoretical model that examines how the cinematic apparatus works to maintain normative ideologies on gender and sexuality. I term this model the Gendered Sexuality Ideological Cinematic Apparatus (GSICA) and employ Foucault, Althusser and Butler as critical philosophers that offer tools in the construction of the GSICA. The GSICA is a key theory because it works to elucidate the meaning behind Japan’s cinematic representation of male-male sexuality and non-normative gender. I examine four generic categories in Japanese cinema: samurai jidaigeki, samurai shin jidaigeki, yakuza gendaigeki and shin yakuza gendaigeki. I argue that these films, in representing specific time periods, work to either repudiate cultural history and/or represent it explicitly in relation to the time period which the film depicts. These representations allude to an intense queer representational and cultural struggle in Japanese cinema. It is time for the recognition of queer Japanese cinemas. These films illustrate the resilient sense of Japanese culture(s) via a (re)connection with ideologies of gender and sexuality that existed prior to Japan’s modernization and assimilation of Western ideological frameworks.

Di, Domenico Joanna E. "Advertising in Italian women's magazines 1915-1980 : gender and evolving ideologies of the middle-class Italian woman". Thesis, University of Strathclyde, 2004. http://oleg.lib.strath.ac.uk:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=21550.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Advertising is one of the oldest methods of communicating messages and ideas. Its role in twentieth century consumer culture in Italy has evolved from one of limitations of media and message to one that uses all types of media and pervades every aspect of daily life. Advertising in women's magazines is a cornerstone of this development. As such, this analysis of advertising in Italian middle-class women's magazines reveals its role in shaping the changing attitudes of Italian women who, throughout the twentieth century, have been core consumers for themselves and for their families. The analysis of specific consumer categories over the 1915 to 1980 time frame, elicits a consideration of fundamental socio-economic contextual factors, which are of interest in terms of how they affect the interpretations that women attach to advertisements throughout this significant period. This interconnected semiotic and contextual analysis is conducted in depth on a selection of product and brand-specific advertisements in these magazines, previous studies of which tended to be from particular ideological orientations without detailed analysis of the advertisements themselves. Alternatively, those few studies with a greater semiotic focus tended to limit consideration of contextual factors to a restricted time frame. This thesis attempts to bridge this gap by means of a detailed analysis of the language and images utilised in a number of advertisements over a crucial, extended historical period. In so doing, the analysis considers both the degree of divergence and of convergence in the advertising discourses within these magazines, from the dominant visions and ideologies of Italian womanhood of a particular period. In analysing the extent of such divergence or convergence, a number of factors are necessarily incorporated into the framework when examining the role played by advertising in Italian middle-class women's magazines. These are based upon the fact that the advertisements became increasingly important as vehicles for transmitting social and cultural messages that even went beyond the intended consumer-oriented messages of the advertisers. In examining these messages, this thesis stimulates a rethinking of sociocultural and ideological issues in a period of transition for Italian women and society.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Beliefs about which behaviors and responsibilities should typical be assumed by women and men are central in shaping gender relations and gender equality in society. The belief that women should be responsible for domestic work, while men should provide economically for the family gives rise to an uneven opportunity structure, situating women in a disadvantaged position compared to men. In order to achieve gender equality traditional gender role attitudes need to liberalize. This thesis examines who supports non-traditional gender roles in Sweden. Data representative of the Swedish population between the ages of 18-79 were used to explore the relationship between social context and individual self-interest and gender role attitudes. The results showed that women are more likely to be positive towards non-traditional gender roles if they are situated in highly educated social contexts. Conversely, men were found to be more likely to be positive if situated in gender equal contexts. This indicates that men’s beliefs regarding what is appropriate for women might be countered by women in gender equal contexts, while women may find confirmation regarding their non-traditional gender role attitude in other equally liberal women.

Ramakrishnan, Srilakshmi. ""Modernization of Tradition": Contested Discourses and Negotiated Ideologies of Fairness, Gender, and Morality in the South Indian Media". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/194410.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation explored the ways in which the everyday life practices of most urban Indians embodied the "modernization of tradition" (Hancock, 1999) and the role that media texts played in facilitating and encouraging this modernization. The research is based on six months of ethnographic fieldwork conducted from June through December 2005, in the south-Indian city of Chennai, which has traditionally been regarded as a conservative city. Examining the Indian media as a discursive site where normative ideologies are not only constructed but also co-constructed, the study explored and examined how the discourses of tradition and modernity were contested in the south Indian media. It also identified and interpreted the ways in which dominant ideologies at the nexus of color/caste and gender/morality were negotiated by an urban city and its residents in the move towards modernity.Data included three different but inter-related sub-genres of print media texts -- visual images, textual advertisements, and news articles. The primary dataset of visual images consisted of 300 product advertisements culled from four, nationally available, English-language magazines gathered from the two genres of news and film. Textual data sets comprising the matrimonial advertisements and the news articles were gathered from the local editions of two nationally-available English-language newspapers. The broader ethnographic investigation included participant observations, individual formal and informal interviews, and focus group discussions with adult residents of Chennai. The data were analyzed using a multi-discursive and multidisciplinary approach. The analyses were informed by conceptual approaches which included: social semiotics and the multimodal theory of communication, genre analysis, critical discourse and feminist critical discourse analyses, and alternative modernities. In examining the media texts as the site where dominant sociocultural ideologies were being constantly configured and reconfigured, the analyses identified and examined the workings of three interconnected themes - fairness (in relation to skin color), gender, and morality. Through these themes, the dissertation examined the larger contestations and negotiations between the discourses of traditions and modernities as experienced by adult residents of urban Chennai. The discourses of identity construction and reconstruction were thus examined at the nexus of the individual self situated within the larger frame of the city.

Abstract (sommario):
A Marxist feminist standpoint positions patriarchy and capitalism as mutually beneficial, thus interestingly situating the new market of male contraceptives (MCs). This project takes an in-depth look at the opinions of 15 young men regarding the use of MCs by examining how Western, heterosexual masculinity informs their attitudes and discusses how a new economic market of MCs may affect current social ideologies about of the sexual division of labor. Because notions of masculinity are essential in perpetuating such ideologies, understanding masculinity as it relates to a new market for MCs is imperative. During a series of focus groups men described this relationship in terms of responsibility, control, sexual pleasure, cost, gendered ideologies, and side effects. As a result of this research, I argue that the emerging market for MCs may simultaneously strengthen power dynamics and restructure labor practices within the sexual division of labor.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is concerned with 1) establishing the origins of sex-gender differences and with ascertaining if these are changeable; 2) the structure and function of the postmodern patriarchal family and its role in sex-gender development and sex-gender stereotyping; 3) the role of education in sex-gender/other stereotyping; 4) the development of an holistic inclusive pedagogy; and 5) the implementation of this pedagogy. The thesis is structured around six research questions. The first three research questions What are the origins of sex-gender differences?, What is the structure of the postmodern patriarchal family and what functions does it have? and What role do the patriarchal family and its patriarchal structure play in sex-gender development and sex-gender stereotyping? guide an interdisciplinary enquiry that provides the basis for the development of an holistic inclusive pedagogy. The fourth question What role does education play in sex-gender stereo-typing? delineates the context out of which an holistic inclusive pedagogy is developed. The last two research questions What kind of pedagogy is needed to ameliorate the injustices students suffer as a result of sex-gender/other stereotyping? and How can an holistic inclusive pedagogy raise learner’s-teacher’s awareness of sex-gender/other stereotyping? are concerned with the creation of an holistic inclusive pedagogy, its salient features, philosophical and epistemological assumptions and aims, etc.

Koeberg, Richenda. "Contextualising work-family conflict, social support and gender ideologies of professional/registered nurses in the Cacadu District, Eastern Cape". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1017884.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The focus of this study was to investigate work-family conflict, social support and gender ideologies of professional/registered nurses in the South African context, specifically within the Cacadu District (Eastern Cape). The study had four aims: (a) to investigate the construct validity of the measuring instrument, (b) to investigate the relationship between social support provided by family and family interference with work (FIW), (c) to ascertain the influence of shift work on perceived work-family conflict, and lastly, (d) to determine whether there is a difference between the number of children in households and nurses’ perceptions of work-family conflict. A quantitative research design was used in the study. The sample (N = 106) was taken from five district hospitals in the Cacadu District, Eastern Cape. The measuring instrument consisted of three scales, namely the Multi-dimensional Work-Family Conflict Scale (Carlson, Kacmar, & Williams, 2000), the Social Support Questionnaire (Sarason, Sarason, Shearin, & Pierce, 1987), and an adapted Gender Ideology Scale (Tsai, 2008). The results indicated that the construct validity of the Multi-dimensional Work-Family Conflict scale was satisfactory. However, analysis of the Social Support Questionnaire and Gender Ideology scales both suggested that these scales have not been validated for use with diverse samples outside the contexts in which they were developed. The results also indicated that there is a relationship between social support provided by families and behaviour-based family interference with work. Additionally, there appeared to be a difference between the shifts worked by nurses and their perceived work-family conflict, except for strain-based work interference with family. And lastly, the only significant difference between the number of children in the household and work-family conflict was reported for strain-based work interference with family. The implications of the results for future research suggest the importance of developing and validating work-family conflict, social support and gender ideology scales that are dependent on the context of the research. In so doing, the constructs of the scale are made meaningful. Additionally, the findings provide preliminary evidence of tailoring work-family initiatives that address the needs of the nursing profession and the context of healthcare institutions

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of school leaders&rsquo
individual differences on educational and general ideologies in primary schools and kindergartens, in Mersin province, Turkey. The study aims to find out whether there are differences in educational and general ideologies in terms of school leaders&rsquo
gender, academic degree, and the number of in-service training that they have participated. Quantitative method and a causal-comparative research design were used in this study. All primary and kindergarten school principals were the target population of the study. Survey method was used and a questionnaire which composes of two sections
demographics and Educational Ideologies Inventory (EII) were applied in this study. The questionnaires were distributed to 456 school leaders and 265 of them responded the survey. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were made by SPSS version 15.0 program. The results of descriptive statistical analysis showed that school leaders have an inclination to liberalism in both educational and general ideologies. 35.2% of the school leaders had educational conservative ideologies (fundamentalism, intellectualism, and conservatism) and 64.8% of them had educational liberal ideologies (liberalism, liberationalism, and anarchism). In addition, 33.6% of the school leaders were general conservative and 66.4% were general liberal. Multivariate Analysis of Variances (MANOVA) was conducted to find out any difference in educational and general ideologies of school leaders in terms of gender academic degree and the number of in-service training that they have participated. The results showed that gender and the number of in-service training that school leaders have participated did not create a difference in school leaders&rsquo
educational and general ideologies. However, the results of this study revealed that academic degree of school leaders lead to a difference in educational ideologies of them. Consequently, the results of this study contribute to fill the gap in the literature concerning educational and general ideologies of school leaders in relation to gender, academic degree and the number of in-serving training that school leaders have participated.

Abstract (sommario):
In 2016, Disney animation studios released their newest princess film Moana. The film follows a seemingly feminist plot line of a young female heroine who saves the world from destruction. This study examines Moana (2016) in relation to the views on feminism in the U.S. Disney’s large social and economic influence provides rich grounds for this research. Using an ideological rhetorical criticism, I uncovered the presented and suggested elements of the film. These elements combined with research on U.S. feminist ideology allowed three ideological themes to emerge: ecofeminism, power feminism, and post-feminism. The three themes are threaded to create a seemingly feminist patchwork ideology. I argue that the patchwork ideology that is created is a result of the political and economic conditions present around the production of Moana. Furthermore, I argue that this patchwork ideology is ultimately harmful to current feminist ideology in the U.S. This study adds insight into how feminist ideology is used in popular media.

Abstract (sommario):
Human reproduction is increasingly commodified, which paves the way for reproductive enhancement rather than just assistance. Non-medical gender/sex selection is one of the reproductive enhancement services that is offered on the fertility market, and it is a practice that raises severe concerns regarding the social and political impact of biotechnologies. Through Critical Discourse Analysis and Biomedicalization theory, I analyse how non-medical gender/sex selection is legitimised in online forum discussions. I argue that gender/sex selection is legitimized through gender- and family-conservative and neoliberal ideologies, and that gender/sex selection can be understood as a tool to enhance the family, increase privilege, and attain hypernormativity.

This thesis examines the impact of this law upon the negotiation of divorce, and its implications for the constitution of state and social power. I argue that the New Order state used this law to attempt to control gender relations and reinforce political legitimacy, but that women and men resisted this project in a variety of ways. Divorce may entail the contestation of state ideological prescriptions on gender. It also reveals gender relations operating independently of the state. As such, it is a particularly fruitful site for an analysis of the location and constitution of state and social power. In order to analyse the complex relationship between marriage, divorce, and power, I have adopted several original strategies. I expand the definition of property to encompass

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This study investigates the language of “citizen sociolinguists,” everyday users of social network sites (SNS) who contribute to the discourses about language on Twitter, Reddit, and Tumblr, platforms with distinctive user demographics and technological affordances. The data were collected through keyword searches for mansplain, whitesplain, richsplain and thinsplain, metapragmatic neologisms which are lexical blends of the verb explain and one of four social categories. Disputes of macro-level ideologies are revealed by users’ creative meaning-making strategies and metapragmatic awareness of micro-level texts and utterances. Making use of the linguistic practices of the SNS, as well as the concisely-compacted semantic and pragmatic meanings of the four splain words, users come to evaluate communicative dynamics between speakers who differ from or relate with others in their experiences of sex, skin color, economic status, and physical form. Drawing on elements of Citizen Sociolinguistics (Rymes & Leone, 2014) with Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 1989) and Computer-Mediated Discourse Analysis (Herring, 2004), I question how users make metapragmatic judgements to convey varying meanings of the four focal words, and how the uses of [x]splain and the surrounding discourses illuminate socio-ideological values about language, about its intersection with gender, race, class, and body size, and the authority to speak on topics that are macro-contextually situated in discourses of privilege, power, and inequality. Lastly, I compare the findings across the three SNS platforms to understand how competing discourses differ in relation to each site’s user demographics, technological affordances and limitations, and subsequent linguistic practices.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the ways that African Americans in the mid-twentieth century thought about and practiced masculinity. Important contemporary events such as the struggle for civil rights and the Vietnam War influenced the ways that black Americans sought not only to construct masculine identities, but to use these identities to achieve a higher social purpose. The thesis argues that while mainstream American society had specific prescriptions for how men should behave, black Americans were able to select which of these prescriptions they valued and wanted to pursue while simultaneously rejecting those that they found untenable. Masculinity in the mid-century was not based on one thing, but rather was an amalgamation of different ideals that black men (and women) sought to utilize to achieve communal goals of equality, opportunity, and family.

Abstract (sommario):
Media & Communication
Ph.D.
In this study, I use social constructionist feminist and queer theory and narrative analysis to identify messages about gender, sexuality, and sexual violence in both the book versions and film adaptations of The Hunger Games trilogy, the Divergent trilogy, and the Vampire Academy series. These three series are representative of a major pop culture trend in which young adult novels are not only popular and financially successful, but in which these types of novels are being adapted into major films. In this study, I demonstrate that the book and film series all generally privilege whiteness, able-bodiedness, and heterosexuality, and in doing so, these texts reproduce a narrow worldview and privilege normative ways of knowing and being. However, while the films strictly reinforce normative understandings of gender, sexuality, and sexual violence, each book series reimagines gender in important ways, disrupts normative scripts that denigrate women’s ownership over their sexuality, and represents sexual violence in graphic but not exploitative ways that portray the real life consequences and complexity of sexual violence. My analysis of these texts reveals that the book series employ a variety of mechanisms that empower the women protagonists including establishing their narrative agency and representing them as gender fluid, while the film series utilize a variety of mechanisms that both objectify and superficially empower women including an emphasis on women’s sexualized physical bodies especially in times of vulnerability, the pronunciation of “natural” sexual differences, and the strict regulation of women’s bodies by dominantly masculine men. I argue that the significant alteration of the books’ original messages are a product of logistical, historical, cultural, and economic elements of the film industry, which has continually constructed women’s roles in terms of their sexual availability, victimization, and need to be rescued by heroic men. In this study, I address the institutional imperatives of the film industry that dictate specific representations of gender, sexuality, and sexual violence, and I address what these representations might mean for audiences.

Abstract (sommario):
The master’s paper FEMININITY AND MASCULINITY IN GOD’S PLAN IN THE CONTEXT OF MODERN CHALLENGES OF GENDER IDEOLOGY analyzes the problem how to be able to defend a Christian standpoint in respect of personal identity (femininity and masculinity) and duly present this standpoint in Lithuanian institutions of general education. The necessity for this work is evidenced by various modern-days challenges that transform the values and have a negative impact on traditional catholic conception of sex. The aim of the work is to formulate a catholic conception of personal identity based on anthropological principles of femininity and masculinity according to the teaching of the Church. The first part of the master’s paper includes a critical evaluation of modern-days challenges and the standpoint of secular world. The second part presents the analysis of the survey that reveals the attitude of senior schoolchildren towards sexual identity. The third part deals with the teaching of Catholic Church about the concept of woman and man and the vocation for family. The fourth part includes guidelines and recommendations for the development of personal identity and parochial apostolic work of secular Catholics and presents the assessment of general education schools’ curricula and prospects of their use. The work emphasizes that secular society is offering inadequate sex education for children and young people, which is being implemented through the structures of Gender Ideology. The survey... Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this dissertation was to explore how uninstitutionalised female preachers, or dā'iyāt, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia construct authority in a context in which male ulama dominate the production of religious knowledge and represent the apex of the religious and social hierarchy. The study was broad, descriptive, and explanatory and drew primarily on the framework known as ‘accountable ethnography’. Data collection occurred between June and December 2009 and consisted of observations, interviews, and collection of literary artefacts, which were reviewed alongside literature published internationally. A flexible mode of inquiry was employed, partly in response to constraints on public religious discourse imposed in Saudi Arabia after September 11, 2001. The study concludes that the dā'iyāt construct authority predominantly by relying on male ulama as marji'iyya diniyya (religious frame of reference) when issuing fatwas, as pedagogical models, as sources of charismatic inspiration, and as providers of personal recommendations. The dissertation also addresses a set of 'alternate' strategies of authority construction employed by Dr Fāṭima Nasiīf. Almost uniquely, this dā'iyā is found to construct authority that goes beyond reproduction of institutionalised views by developing scholarly arguments to support interpretations of Islamic texts that are responsive to women’s perspectives and needs. In doing so, she expands the parameters of religiously permissible practice while remaining, for her part, within the confines of orthodox practice. Thus, although her society and most researchers perceive knowledge as a masculine attribute in the Saudi religious sphere, in matters relating to women, as well as through active leadership in ritual practice, Dr Fāṭima demonstrates that the dā'iyā can become the authority. Nevertheless, for her and for the other dā'iyāt, the study finds that legitimatising female religious authority depends upon maintaining the established social order, including the hierarchy that places women in a subordinate position to men.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to contribute to the debate surrounding the institutional feminist strategy of integrating gender into the development field. This strategy advocates the transformation of development discourse and practice through the integration of gender equality concerns. In this work, we examine the effectiveness and validity of this strategy as a means to achieve greater equality between men and women. Thus, we have analyzed the construction, the appropriation and the effects at the local level of a World Bank “gender” project. Institutional feminists involved in planning and implementing the Generosidad project had some flexibility in constructing the project's gender perspective discourse; and were thus able to make sure its programs followed feminist objectives, such as the democratization of gender relations in public and private spheres. The reactions of leaders at the local level who participated in a gender equality and leadership awareness-raising workshop in the city of Pinotepa Nacional show that –even in a context fraught with machismo, violence and well-defined gender roles –local men and women leaders appropriated certain ideas in order to democratize the balance of power between the genders. In so doing, they became actors in the construction of the project's gender perspective, and in reinforcing women's citizenship. We therefore concluded that the institutional feminist strategy is valid, useful and necessary, if not sufficient due to the fact that resistances encountered locally blocked the leaders' efforts for collective action

"Possibilidades para um trabalho docente feminista : professoras mulheres da Rede Municipal de Ensino de Porto Alegre, feminismos e a narrativa conservadora da “ideologia de gênero”". reponame:Biblioteca Digital de Teses e Dissertações da UFRGS, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10183/183231.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis analyzes how female teachers in the Public School System (PSS) of the city of Porto Alegre link their teaching practices to feminisms from a discussion about the conservative narrative of ―gender ideology‖ in schools. From a critical sociology of education perspective, the study uses the concepts of hegemony and ideology to understand social organization. In a reality permeated by disputes for hegemony, in which different ideologies are present in a contradictory and pulverized way in the common sense, this thesis analyzes the phenomenon of the so-called ―gender ideology‖ – a narrative invented by the Vatican in the 1990s as an attempt to interrupt the advances of Gender Studies and the feminist movements. Through a conservative alliance between neoliberals and neoconservatives, this ―antigender‖ and ―antifeminist‖ movement has become popular within the Brazilian educational context. Although a growing debate has been present in the scientific field, this study sought a perspective that is still invisible, that of female teachers. Any changes proposed and introduced to educational laws concern women primarily: they are the absolute majority among Brazilian basic education teachers, and, despite being historically organized and resistant as a category, teaching practices are still (con)formed by a patriarchal and sexist heritage. Two focal groups composed of eight teachers examined the approximations and distances from feminist perspectives within their teaching practices. ―Antigender‖ and ―antifeminist‖ initiatives, such as the movement for ―unpolitical schools‖, were used to trigger the debates. Considering the contradictions present in social dynamics, it was possible to verify reverberations of both conservative and feminist discourses in the participants‘ common sense Inherently contradictory and heterogeneous, common sense is also permeated by elements of ―good sense‖, which may make them identify with ―convincing‖ discourses. Thus, the narrative of the conservative alliance is relatively successful among the teachers, making them identify with the use of gender as a ―biologizing‖ instance and with elements of blame within their work practices. Concern was expressed that, because they were interested in deconstructing stereotypes and problematizing gender/sexual inequalities, teachers could be interfering negatively in the students' identity formation. The participants‘ discourses also evidenced the presence of feminist perspectives in the teaching work of teachers who, in their practices, seek to accept and legitimize existences that differ from the binary and heterosexual norm and to be attentive to the (re)production of inequalities. Although they indicate generational, cultural and social differences between them and their students – interpreted as an effect of the institutionalization of feminist and LGBTT demands on society and its popularization in common sense – the participants show commitment to revise their learned notions about what is normal to better serve their students. Finally, there was also a contradictory discourse among the teachers about the importance of educational policies that propose debates about gender: they declare the debate to be necessary, and at the same time seem to underestimate the effectiveness of policies. On the other hand, recognizing the existence of a social context that has progressively legitimized feminist and LGBTT guidelines, they consider that laws prohibiting the discussion of this subject in schools are unfeasible.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the study has been to examine women's participation in the reproduction of the system of heteronormative expectations of femininity and masculinity through narrative method, analyze books within the erotic women’s literature, as well as interviews with females. The study's focus was on the presentation and representations of the femininity(s) and masculinity(s). Through the questions , How represents heteronormative femininity(s) and masculinity(s) in the erotic women´s litterateur? How portray women, their views on femininity(s) and masculinity(s)? The study were linked with the radical feminist theory regarding the male patriarchate's role as a hegemony in society, as well as one of queer theory's definitions of the gender and heteronormativity. The study also included elements of feminist research on popular culture. On the basis of my purpose and the research question I have come to the conclusion that women are involved in the reproduction of the system of heteronormative expectations of femininity and masculinity. But the study also shows a shifting duality of " ideal woman" and "ideal man".

Abstract (sommario):
The relevance of childrens animated films in the process of teaching specific roles, values and ideals is widely recognized by culture scholars. The present work aims to unveil and critically analyze the subtle discursive strategy present in some of these media artifacts primarily addressed to children, which consists in reiterating the normality status of hegemonic forms of gender identification by attaching negativity content to devious identities in relation to socio-historic rules of \"masculinity\" and \"femininity\". Therefore, we make use of the Greimasian semiotics approach in order to analyze the presence of transgression elements of \"natural\" conceived gender roles in the representation of the villains Ursula, Jafar and Scar, from the Disney animation movies \"The Little Mermaid\" (1989), \"Alladin\" (1992) and \"The Lion King\" (1994), respectively. We emphasize the analysis of the elements present on the text discursive level, namely the characters costumes, their body language codes and physical conformations. Together with semiotics, we use some of the concepts from the research line generically known as \"Discursive Analysis\", aiming to discuss the dialogical relation established among the \"corpus\" of analysis and the political and social conflicting speeches, proper to the socio-historic contexts from which the movies emerged. Furthermore, we aim to propose discussions over the roles that this association between deviation of gender norms and the antagonists figure play on the support of heteronormativity and pre-concepts regarding certain social groups, problematizing the animation films as non-formal education teaching tools. We conclude that the representation patterns of the studied villains, on their gender performances, comply with the ideological function of implicitly and negatively evaluate ways of being and acting which frustrate traditional expectations of \"masculinity and femininity\", unequivocally associating them to evil, cruelty, selfishness and greed. Finally, we attempt to understand the devious gender identities from the studied villains under some Queer Theory elements.

Abstract (sommario):

This essay is about how the aesir are used as an ideal image of the original Nordic aspects and as a symbol of heroism and pure strength. The main subject of this essay is to look at how this ideal of masculinity is represented in the art produced during the era of romantic nationalism. The choice of focusing on this era in particular is made due to the fact that it was during this time that the modern images of the aesir and the Vikings were made. The purpose of this study is to examine how the ideal of masculinity reflects upon the artistic interpretations of the Norse mythology in a selected group of art work produced during the 1800’s. Further more research is done in order to look for the possible political messages that could be connected to these works of art.

The writing of this essay has meant a search for facts in books concerning romantic nationalism, Norse mythology and interpretation of Norse mythology, and finally depiction of the Norse mythology in the romantic nationalistic art during the 19th century.  This work has been combined with analyses of a selected number of works of art produced during the 1800’s. Some limitations have been done in selecting this art, considering the year of completion and the motif. Due to these limitations, all of the selected works were made within the time of the 19th century and depict male gods of the Norse mythology.

Following conclusions can be made from this study: (1) that during periods of the 19th century the aesir were seen as strong warriors with a clearly Nordic origin; (2) this ideology was expressed in different ways in the art of the time and was later on also used by the racial ideological sciences.

Studiens frågeställningar har varit följande;

This thesis shares one of the general purposes of NEGRI Núcleo de Estudos de Gênero, Raça e Idade, of the Post-Graduated Studies Program in Social Psychology of the PontifíciaUniversidadeCatólica de São Paulo PUCSP (Pontificial Catholic University of São Paulo), that is, to contribute to the understanding of the social construction of the Brazilian childhood. Specifically, the object of the study were the discourses about the baby, its education and care, in particular, produced and published by the magazine Pais e Filhos (Parents and Children), with the analysis of 40 years of the publication. The theoretical field was constituted with the integrations of John B. Thompson s theory of ideology (1995) and the studies about the construction of social problems. The theories of gender and the social studies about childhood contributed to the construction of the object. The methodology for the analysis of the symbolic production of Pais e Filhos was the depth hermeneutics (John B. Thompson, 1995), associated to techniques of analysis of content (Bardin, 1988). The results point to a silence about the theme small child and public space, which can be interpreted as an operation strategy of the ideology, acting in the maintenance of age inequalities. Babies and small children are presented as fragile and unprotected and their invisibility in public space, central theme of this thesis, is very little debated. The discourse, structured in a seducing way, reproducing a conversation with a friend, was identified as one more operation strategy of the ideology in the operation mode dissimulation. Day care centers are presented as a viable alternative so women consider them as the best option. Even when the reports encourage the use of this option, the text presents fears associated to the baby s fragility and to the aptitude of the institution to shelter it. The discourses that were produced and published by Pais e Filhos can be interpreted as agents of the support of domination relations of gender and age, contributing little to the modification of a inequalities scenario in relation to women and small children

Abstract (sommario):
Lamaholot is a population found on Flores and in the Solor Archipelago of Eastern Indonesia. The population is village-based and divided into patrilineal descent groups. Marriage is coupled with bridewealth and follows a pattern of asymmetric marriage alliance between descent groups. This thesis shows that a small group of Lamaholot in the administrative regency of East Flores shares certain traditions with a neighbouring population called Ata Tana ‘Ai. Ata Tana ‘Ai are a sub-group of the Sikka population in the administrative regency of Sikka. Descent group among Ata Tana ‘Ai are matrilineal and households were traditionally based in scattered gardens. Marriage is not coupled with bridewealth and instances of asymmetric marriage alliance between descent groups are here a consequence rather than a cause of marriage. The current fieldsite seems to have been part of the ceremonial system of Ata Tana ‘Ai and also to have shared a tradition of dispersed settlement in the gardens. The descent groups might initially have been matrilineal, but in the recent past there was also a habit of dividing children between the parental descent groups. Recent traditions of dividing children can be found throughout central-east Flores, but seemingly not to same extent as at the fieldsite. The payment of elephant’s tusks was a central feature in the acquisition of group members at the fieldsite and could be paid by both men and women. These payments were not necessarily tied to marriage and did not serve as bridewealth. In the last century outer social factors, such as the Catholic mission and the creation of the Dutch colonial state, have resulted in that many of the traditional practices at the fieldsite have been replaced with traditions from Lamaholot elsewhere. The residence pattern is now village-based, but gardens retain a central social and ritual position. The role of the elephant’s tusks has taken different expressions throughout this period of social change, and alongside the changing role of tusks, the traditional social and material authority of women at the fieldsite has declined, whereas that of men has increased. This thesis examines the current and the traditional practices in and around the fieldsite, and focuses on local definitions of descent group, kinship, and inheritance, looking at both biological and social perspectives.

Abstract (sommario):
The following study aims to discuss the impact of Erik Poppes’ and Paul Greengrass’ respective audio-visual texts depicting the July 22 massacre on Utøya, Norway. The study will discuss the impact of said texts on the creation of a cultural memory of the event, as well as the creation of identity which is derived from its remembrance.   The cultural memory and formation of identity created by this mediating media have an impact on the reception of the depicted past as well as the ideas and views regarding contemporary times. This gives the study a deeper relation to the historical field, whilst also contextualizing the entire study in the grander field of memory studies. In addition, the method decodes the theoretical perspectives of gender-theory and ideological-theory.   Considering the choice of theoretical fields, discourse analysis is implemented as the method of analysis. It is derived from Faucault’s idea of language and its notions of hierarchical carriers of meaning, though in this context with a broader scope as to include both linguistic and non-linguistic signs.   The results of the analysis were fruitful. In terms of gender-theoretical portrayal, the films offered similarities as well as differences. Both of them portrayed a nuanced representation of gender-constructions, however in highly different ways, as their respective narratives were dissimilar. Furthermore, the ideological values portrayed were interlinked between the films, though more or less fixed towards different ideas. The discussion that followed connected this study to the wider field of cultural memory and identity creation in relations to mediating popular-historical media.

This work has the aim of studying, from the standpoint of the discourse analysis and the cognitive linguistics, a gender of letters, more speciffically letters from readers sent to a scientific divulgation magazine called Superinteressante. We have verified, in our analysis, that some of them presented subjective character, expressing sympathy for the subjects of the magazine, which includes also a sort of confessional feature. Some of them presented distinct discursive ideological structures connected to the common wisdom or to ancient cultural heritages. There were others distinguished by being authority letters, that is wrote by people who have knowledge about the treated subjects, who wanted to criticize in a positive or negative way the manner how the magazine dealt with the subject in focus.
