Abstract Social epigenomics is a new field of research that studies how the social environment shapes the epigenome and how in turn the epigenome modulates behavior. We focus on describing known gene–environment interactions (GEIs) and epigenetic mechanisms in different mammalian social systems. To illustrate how epigenetic mechanisms integrate GEIs, we highlight examples where epigenetic mechanisms are associated with social behaviors and with their maintenance through neuroendocrine, locomotor, and metabolic responses. We discuss future research trajectories and open questions for the emerging field of social epigenomics in nonmodel and naturally occurring social systems. Finally, we outline the technological advances that aid the study of epigenetic mechanisms in the establishment of GEIs and vice versa.

ABSTRACT Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) and enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) are diarrheagenic pathogens that colonize the intestinal tract through the formation of attaching and effacing lesions, induced by effectors translocated via a type III secretion system (T3SS) encoded on the locus of enterocyte effacement (LEE). In EHEC O157, numerous virulence factors, including around 40 T3SS effectors, have been identified. Most of them are encoded on genomic islands (GEIs) such as prophages and integrative elements. For EPEC, however, no systematic search of GEIs and virulence-related genes carried therein has been done, and only a limited number of virulence factors have been identified so far. In this study, we performed a systemic and genome-wide survey of the GEIs in strain B171-8, one of the prototype strains of EPEC, by the combined use of whole-genome PCR scanning and fosmid mapping and identified 22 large GEIs, including nine lambda-like prophages, three P2-like prophages, the LEE, and three additional integrative elements. On these prophages and integrative elements, we found genes for a set of T3SS proteins, a total of 33 T3SS effectors or effector homologues, and 12 other virulence factors which include five nonfimbrial adhesins. Most of the T3SS effector families identified are also present in EHEC O157, but B171-8 possesses a significantly smaller number of effectors. Not only the presence or absence of Shiga toxin genes but also the difference in the T3SS effector repertoire should be considered in analyzing the pathogenicity of EPEC and EHEC strains.

Abstract Multilocation experiments are the steps to determine the genotype stability being tested. Honey sweet potato is a superior agricultural product from West Java, Indonesia. High yield and sweetness are the important traits of the new honey sweet potato breeding lines. In this study, the sweetness level used was the soluble solid level (°brix). The goals of this study were to determine the effects of genotype by environment interactions (GEIs) and to select for storage root yield stability and sweetness among the new promising honey sweet potato lines. Field trials have been carried out using randomized completed block design, which was repeated thrice for the 16 genotypes, across six locations in West Java, Indonesia. To estimate GEIs, data were analyzed using combined analysis of variance. Storage root yield stability (t/ha) and sweetness (°brix) were estimated using parametric measurements, nonparametric measurements, and GGE biplot. The results showed that the genotype (G), environment (E), and GEIs have significant influences on storage root yield and sweetness. Two genotypes, SP3 and SP16, have been identified as the most stable ones with high yield and sweetness across several locations. These two superior genotypes are recommended as potential new honey sweet potato varieties for West Java, Indonesia.

11527 Background: Overexpression of ABCB1/P-glycoprotein (Pgp) predicts poor outcome in retrospective osteosarcoma series.Two prospective trials with Pgp expression and post-induction histologic response as stratification factors were activated in Italy (ISG/OS-2) and Spain (GEIS-33). Methods: Patients ≤ 40 years with extremity non-metastatic high-grade osteosarcoma were eligible. Analysisi of Pgp expression from diagnostic biopsy was centralized. Preoperatively, all patients received methotrexate, adriamycin, cisplatinum (MAP). Surgery was performed at week 8. All patients received a dose of adriamycin following surgery. In case of Pgp overexpression (Pgp+), mifamurtide (2 mg/m2 twice/week for 3 months then weekly for 6 months) was added after surgery, with 4 consecutive cycles of ifosfamide 3 gr/m2/day, day 1-5 (HDIFO) in case of poor histologic response (necrosis < 90%) to MAP. Patients without overexpression of Pgp (Pgp-) received MAP postoperatively, regardless the pathological response. From March 2013, an amendment increased high dose methotrexate cumulative dose from 60 g/m2 (5 cycles) to 120 mg/m2 (10 cycles). The post-amendment regimen was adopted in the observational prospective study by GEIS. Here we present the merged analysis of ISG/OS-2 patients treated post-amendment and GEIS-33. Results: From March 2013 to April 2018, 274 patients were included. Median age was 14 years (range 4-38), male/female: 163/111; 90 were Pgp-, 164 were Pgp+, 20 not evaluable. With a median follow-up of 48 months (1.3-78.5 months), the 3-year EFS and OS were 71.9% (95%CI 66-76.9) and 88% (95%CI: 83.2-91.5) respectively, with no inferior survival for Pgp positive patients and improved survival for good responders (Table). Conclusions: In this prospective uncontrolled study with a risk-adapted strategy for non-metastatic osteosarcoma, survival is superior to that of all ISG/GEIS previous series. The 3-year EFS of 71.9% compares favorably with other reports. Pgp+ patients performed well in this study, in which mifamurtide and HDIFO were added after a poor response to MAP. La ecoeficiencia se define como la cantidad o valor económico de un producto por su influencia ambiental e identifica en términos socioeconómicos y ambientales la sostenibilidad de un sistema. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la ecoeficiencia de tres modelos de producción agrícola de maíz duro presentes en el cantón Shushufindi, Ecuador. Los modelos identificados en el estudio fueron el modelo convencional (MC), semi-convencional (MS) y tradicional (MT). La influencia ambiental se determinó mediante dos indicadores de impacto contemplados en el Análisis de Ciclo de Vida, como son las emisiones de GEIs, según las directrices del IPCC (2006a) y la huella hídrica (HH), a través de los componentes dados por Hoekstra y col., (2011). Para la evaluación de la ecoeficiencia se consideraron los lineamientos de Ribal y col. (2009), aplicando un modelo de optimización por programación no lineal (GLP). This squib reconsiders Geis & Zwicky’s influential proposal on Invited Inference, according to which conditionals are regularly “perfected” to biconditionals. We first show that the “regularity” assumption attached to conditional perfection is doubtful in light of established experimental findings concerning other logical terms, such as Some and or and the conjunction and. We then review existing conditional data with the aim of making them cohere with these other experimental findings. We argue that (a) the process that leaves the impression of a biconditional reading (the acceptance of a fallacious argument such as the Affirmation of the Consequent) arises only after all participants detect a violation on-line from what is essentially a surprising minor premise and that; (b) some participants make an effort to adjust to such unexpected violations at a relatively small cognitive cost in order to accept invalid arguments while others persist in rejecting whatever follows and at a greater cognitive cost. Both of these features of conditional processing undermine claims from Geis & Zwicky’s proposal.

In many species, females are hypothesized to obtain ‘good genes’ for their offspring by mating with males in good condition. However, female preferences might deplete genetic variance and make choice redundant. Additionally, high-condition males sometimes produce low-fitness offspring, for example because of environmental turnover and gene-by-environment interactions (GEIs) for fitness, or because fit males carry sexually antagonistic alleles causing them to produce unfit daughters. Here, we extend previous theory by investigating the evolution of female mate choice in a spatially explicit evolutionary simulation implementing both GEIs and intralocus sexual conflict (IASC), under sex-specific hard or soft selection. We show that IASC can weaken female preferences for high-condition males or even cause a preference for males in low condition, depending on the relative benefits of producing well-adapted sons versus daughters, which in turn depends on the relative hardness of selection on males and females. We discuss the relevance of our results to conservation genetics and empirical evolutionary biology. The development of gullies represents a specific type of fluvial erosion that is triggered when surface runoff becomes concentrated during extreme rainfall events. This study investigates a part of the Považské Valley and Strážovské Mountains in Slovakia to assess the potential susceptibility and gully erosion hazard using a Geoecological Information System (GeIS). The landscape of the area was studied through primary field research and the analysis of secondary materials. The GeIS was then constructed in order to undertake specific multidimensional statistical methods. These were used to assess the potential susceptibly and gully erosion hazard. Those areas with the greatest potential susceptibility occur in Butkovská Furrow and the Podmanínska Hills whilst those with the least potential susceptibility occur in Butkovské Klippes and the Trenčianska Upland. The greatest gully erosion hazard was identified on arable land in the Podmanínska Hills and on the river terraces in the Ilavská Basin. It is clear that the majority of the permanent gullies within the study area are controlled by the course of existing anthropogenic linear features such as unpaved field and forest roads and balks in arable land.

Exaggerated sexual displays are often supposed to indicate the indirect benefits females may receive from sexual reproduction with displaying males, but empirical evidence for positive relationships between the genetic quality and sexual trait quality is scant. The explanation for this might lie in the fact that mixing of reproductive individuals whose development has been influenced by genotype-by-environment interactions (GEIs) can blur the relationship between the individual male genetic quality and phenotype as perceived by females. Strong GEIs can generate an ecological crossover, where different genotypes are superior in environments that are separated either in space or time. Here, we use a stochastic simulation model to show that even a weak GEI, which does not generate an obvious ecological crossover, can neutralize or even reverse the relationship between genetic quality and sexual trait size in the presence of environmental heterogeneity during development. Our model highlights the importance of developmental selection in evolution of traits and allows us to predict the situations in which sexual displays might not be reliable indicators of genetic quality.

If Machiavellians behave relatively morally or ethically as stated by Leary and colleagues in 1986, then hypotheses regarding their immorality should be reexamined. 84 MBA students in a program at Fairleigh Dickinson University completed Christie and Geis' 1970 Mach IV scale and the Guilty-Conscience subscale of Mosher's 1988 Revised Mosher Guilt Inventory. Results indicate that some students scored high on both Machiavellianism and Morality-Conscience Guilt.

Abstract We have identified, using composite interval mapping, quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting a variety of life history traits (LHTs) in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Using recombinant inbred strains assayed on the surface of agar plates, we found QTL for survival, early fertility, age of onset of sexual maturity, and population growth rate. There was no overall correlation between survival on solid media and previous measures of survival in liquid media. Of the four survival QTL found in these two environments, two have genotype-environment interactions (GEIs). Epistatic interactions between markers were detected for four traits. A multiple regression approach was used to determine which single markers and epistatic interactions best explained the phenotypic variance for each trait. The amount of phenotypic variance accounted for by genetic effects ranged from 13% (for internal hatching) to 46% (for population growth). Epistatic effects accounted for 9–11% of the phenotypic variance for three traits. Two regions containing QTL that affected more than one fertility-related trait were found. This study serves as an example of the power of QTL mapping for dissecting the genetic architecture of a suite of LHTs and indicates the potential importance of environment and GEIs in the evolution of this architecture.

Pazopanib was assessed prospectively in the GEIS-32 phase II study (NCT02066285) on advanced solitary fibrous tumour (SFT), resulting in a longer progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) compared with historical controls treated with chemotherapy. A retrospective analysis of peripheral inflammatory indexes in patients enrolled into GEIS-32 was performed to evaluate their prognostic and predictive value. Patients received pazopanib 800 mg/day as the first antiangiogenic line. The impacts of baseline neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and red cell distribution width (RDW) on PFS, OS, and Choi response were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analysis. Metastasis-free interval (MFI), mitotic count, and ECOG were also included as potential prognostic factors. Sixty-seven SFT patients, enrolled in this study, showed a median age of 63 years and a female/male distribution of 57/43. The median follow-up from treatment initiation was 16.8 months. High baseline NLR, PLR, and standardised RDW were significantly associated with worse PFS and OS. NLR, RDW, MFI, and mitotic count were independent variables for PFS, while RDW and ECOG were independent for OS. Further, NLR and mitotic count were independent factors for Choi response. High baseline NLR and RDW values were independent prognostic biomarkers for worse outcome in advanced SFT patients treated with pazopanib.

Variation in the social environment can have profound effects on survival and reproduction in wild social mammals. However, we know little about the degree to which these effects are influenced by genetic differences among individuals, and conversely, the degree to which social environmental variation mediates genetic reaction norms. To better understand these relationships, we investigated the potential for dominance rank, social connectedness and group size to modify the effects of genetic variation on gene expression in the wild baboons of the Amboseli basin. We found evidence for a number of gene–environment interactions (GEIs) associated with variation in the social environment, encompassing social environments experienced in adulthood as well as persistent effects of early life social environment. Social connectedness, maternal dominance rank and group size all interacted with genotype to influence gene expression in at least one sex, and either in early life or in adulthood. These results suggest that social and behavioural variation, akin to other factors such as age and sex, can impact the genotype–phenotype relationship. We conclude that GEIs mediated by the social environment are important in the evolution and maintenance of individual differences in wild social mammals, including individual differences in responses to social stressors.

A psychometric investigation of the MACH IV scaele developed by Christie and Geis in 1970 to measure Machiavellianism was conducted. Factor analyses performed on data from two different samples of respondents suggest empirical difficulties in the number and nature of dimensions underlying the scale. Comparable analyses of a Satisfaction scale developed by Hunt and Chonko in 1984 and administered at the same time to the same subjects as the MACH IV scale indicated no similar difficulties with the Satisfaction scale's empirical validity.

We examined self-reported relations between Machiavellianism (Christie & Geis, 1970) and measures related to adjustment, well-being, and ethical orientation. We predicted that Machiavellianism would be inversely associated with adjustment, and positively associated with a nihilistic, relativistic, and nonidealistic ethical orientation. With respect to adjustment and well-being our results indicate that Machiavellianism is inversely associated with scores on measures of self-esteem, subjective well-being, and hope but positively associated with powerlessness and nihilism. The results bearing on ethical orientation are consistent with outlined predictions.

ABSTRACT Nonpathogenic Escherichia coli strain Nissle 1917 (O6:K5:H1) is used as a probiotic agent in medicine, mainly for the treatment of various gastroenterological diseases. To gain insight on the genetic level into its properties of colonization and commensalism, this strain's genome structure has been analyzed by three approaches: (i) sequence context screening of tRNA genes as a potential indication of chromosomal integration of horizontally acquired DNA, (ii) sequence analysis of 280 kb of genomic islands (GEIs) coding for important fitness factors, and (iii) comparison of Nissle 1917 genome content with that of other E. coli strains by DNA-DNA hybridization. PCR-based screening of 324 nonpathogenic and pathogenic E. coli isolates of different origins revealed that some chromosomal regions are frequently detectable in nonpathogenic E. coli and also among extraintestinal and intestinal pathogenic strains. Many known fitness factor determinants of strain Nissle 1917 are localized on four GEIs which have been partially sequenced and analyzed. Comparison of these data with the available knowledge of the genome structure of E. coli K-12 strain MG1655 and of uropathogenic E. coli O6 strains CFT073 and 536 revealed structural similarities on the genomic level, especially between the E. coli O6 strains. The lack of defined virulence factors (i.e., alpha-hemolysin, P-fimbrial adhesins, and the semirough lipopolysaccharide phenotype) combined with the expression of fitness factors such as microcins, different iron uptake systems, adhesins, and proteases, which may support its survival and successful colonization of the human gut, most likely contributes to the probiotic character of E. coli strain Nissle 1917.

Selecting high-yielding and stable genotypes is the main goal of black soybean breeding. Testing new lines in multiple environments is one of the development processes in black soybean breeding. The aims of the research were (i) to identify the effects of genotype, environment, and their interactions (GEIs) on the grain yield of soybean lines in Java Island; (ii) to select stable and high-yielding soybean lines; (iii) to determine the discriminative environments; and (iv) to determine the concept of stability measurements on black soybean grain yields. Field trials of 10 new F8 promising lines and three check varieties were conducted under eight different environments during four years (2016–2019). The measurement results showed that the grain yield was influenced by genotype (8.35%), environment (59.49%), and GEIs (32.16%). Grain yield stability measurements showed that the four newly identified lines had high yields and were stable in eight environments; they were A-5A-PSJ (S2), DB-96-CTY (S5), UP 161 (S6), and UP 162 (S7). The Ngawi (2017), followed by Bogor (2019) and Banyuwangi (2016), has the strongest interactive capabilities and is suitable for use as a trial environment. Grain yield (Y) was identified as having a positive and significant correlation ( p < 0.05 ) with S(3), S(6), NP(2), NP(3), NP(4), KR, and YSI stability measurements, which indicated that they were included in the concept of dynamic stability measurement. The selected genotypes can be proposed for the release of new high-yielding black soybean varieties in Indonesia.

The hypothesis of a relationship between Machiavellian behavior and sales performance of Christie and Geis was tested with a sample of 110 stockbrokers. Scores on a measure called the Machiavellian Behavior scale were positively and significantly correlated with two self-reported measures of sales performance of the stockbrokers. Present results together with those of two earlier studies supported the hypothesis that salespeople with a Machiavellian orientation are likely to be more successful. Analysis of the data also indicated predictive validity and acceptable internal consistency of the Machiavellian Behavior scale. Limitations of the present study and a need for further research are discussed.

Selection of high yielding and stable maize hybrid requires effective method of evaluation. Multienvironment evaluation is a critical step in plant breeding programs that is aimed at selecting the ideal genotype in a wide range of environments. A method of evaluation that combines a variety parameter of stability could provide more accurate information to select the ideal genotype. The aims of the study were (i) to identify the effect of genotype, environment, and genotype × environment interactions (GEIs) on maize hybrid yields and (ii) to select and to compare maize hybrids that have high and stable yields in diverse environments in Sumatra Island based on combined analysis, selection index, and GGE biplot. The study was conducted in five different environments in Sumatra Island, Indonesia, using a randomized complete block design repeated three times. Data were estimated using combined variance analysis, parametric and nonparametric stability, sustainability index, and GGE biplot. The results showed that the genotype had a significant effect on maize hybrid yields with a contribution of 41.797%. The environment contributed to 24.314%, and GEIs contributed 33.889% of the total variation. E1 (Karo, South Sumatra; dry season) and E3 (Tanjung Bintang, Lampung; dry season) were identified as the most ideal environments (representative) for testing the hybrids for wider adaptability. The maize hybrid with high and stable yields can be selected based on combined stability analysis and sustainability index as well as GGE biplot. These three methods are effectively selected high yielding and stable genotypes when they are used together. The three maize hybrids, namely, MH2, MH8, and MH9, are recommended as high yielding and stable genotype candidates.

Determination of grain yields of stable and high-yielding maize hybrids in a wide environment requires high accuracy. Many stability measurement methods have been used in multi-environment experiments. However, the relationships among the different methods are still difficult to understand. The objectives of this study were to 1. Identify the effect of growing season and location (Environments = E), hybrids (Genotypes = G), and their interactions (GEIs) on grain yields; 2. Select high-yielding and stable maize hybrids in a wide range of environments; 3. Determine the relationship between each stability estimation; and 4. Determine the mega-environment of maize hybrid and identify the best locations for testing. Field experiments were conducted at ten locations in Java Island, Indonesia, for two growing seasons using a randomized completed block design with three replications. The experimental results showed that the main effects of the growing season, location, hybrid, and GEIs, significantly affected maize hybrid yields. Stability estimations of TOP, S(3), S(6), NP(2), NP(3), KR, NP(4), CVi, and bi, belong to the concept of dynamic stability that can be used to select maize hybrids in favorable environments, while other estimations were classified as in the static stability. Three maize hybrids were successfully selected, with high and stable yields based on numerical and visual stability estimations, namely SC2, SC7, and SC9. The three hybrids can be used as candidates for sustainable maize development programs. The dry season, the rainy season, and the combination of two growing seasons produced three mega-environments. GJRS and KARS were the most discriminative environments. Both environments can be used as favorable environments for selecting the ideal maize hybrid.

L’objectif de la présente étude est de vérifier si au secondaire IV les élèves plus fortement orientés vers les personnes développent moins d’intérêt pour leurs cours de physique que ceux qui sont moins fortement orientés vers les personnes. Les variables intérêt, au début et à la fin de l’année, et orientation vers les personnes furent mesurées à l’aide d’adaptations françaises des tests suivants : le Différentiateur sémantique de Geis, le Merritt College Motivation Inventory de Caughren. L’étude montre que seuls les élèves qui ne sont pas orientés vers les personnes conservent leur intérêt intact jusqu’à la fin de l’année scolaire et que l’intérêt des autres diminue.

L’objectif de cette recherche est de vérifier si les étudiants, qui abordent leur premier cours de sciences au niveau secondaire, manifestent une attitude favorable ou défavorable envers chacune des sciences et si cette attitude se modifie en cours d’année. L’attitude globale des étudiants, composée des facteurs intérêt, importance et difficulté, a été mesurée à l’aide de l’adaptation française du Différenciateur sémantique de Geis. L’étude montre une attitude globale plus défavorable envers la physique qu’envers la chimie et la biologie au début de l’année, et, au cours de l’année, une baisse d’intérêt plus prononcée chez les étudiants en chimie que chez les étudiants en physique et en biologie.

Abstract The current study assessed and compared the emotional intelligence of 75 high school students who grew up with different family structures. High school students between the ages of 16-18 years were randomly selected from high schools in Bucharest, Romania. The General Emotional Intelligence Scale (GEIS) was used to measure the level of their emotional intelligence. In addition, a nonverbal test consisting of 20 face photoswith different facial expressions was used to measure a specific aspect of emotional intelligence, perceiving emotions. Results revealed that family structure does not influence emotional intelligence; however, when looking at the aspect of perceiving emotions, family structure influences this aspect of emotional intelligence.
