Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe issue of design and dimensioning of HCR gearing, particularly of the gearings with an internal engagement, it nowadays, especially in the design of hybrid cars drives, highly topical. This kind of gearing has many advantages in operation, but at the same time it is more complicated in stage of its design and load capacity calculation. Authors in this contribution present some results of temperature scuffing research of internal and external HCR gearing. There are given the equations for calculation of warm scuffing resistance of both external and internal HCR gearing derived according to the integral temperature criterion.

Abstract (sommario):
After an extensive research on the fundamental theory, the theoretical basis for the gearing with equal conjugate curvature is presented in this paper. This includes the theory for gear meshing with high oder of contact. In comparison to previous studies, the theory of this paper is more restricted going beyond third order parameters into the fourth order, the teeth profile had one order of contact higher than that of the ordinary gearing. So that further improved the contact strength of tooth profile. A large category of gearings with high order of contact was presented. The rack-pinion gearing with equal conjugate curvature is one of them. In my gearing the curvature center of media rank extend along the pitch line continuously and steadily.

Abstract (sommario):
After an extensive research on the fundamental theory, the theoretical basis for the Logix gearing will be presented in this paper. This includes the theory for gear meshing with high degree of contact. In comparison to previous studies, the theory of this paper is more restricted going beyond third order parameters into the fourth order, the teeth profile had one order of contact higher than that of the Logix gearing. So that further improved the contact strength of tooth profile. A large category of gearings with high order of contact was presented, while the Logix gear is only one of them, or the special example in realization of my theory. In the Logix gearing, the zigzag curvature center curve of media rank does not always lay about the pitch line and does not extend along the pitch line continuously and steadily. It goes forward and returns. So that, in terms of properties of the transverse engagement, the Logix gearing has not much improvement over the traditional Novikov gearing (in which the transverse engagement is temporally). In my gearing the curvature center of media rank extend along the pitch line continuously and steadily. The transverse engagement factor is larger than that of Logix gearing.

Abstract (sommario):
Elements of drilling equipment are subjected to random loads with very high amplitudes during operation. Classical methods of probabilistic calculation of gearings don’t allow us to estimate the probability of their failure taking into account the real operational data obtained by telemetry when these data cannot be described by standard distribution laws. The offered technique is based on application of methods of non-parametric statistics therefore it is free from these restrictions. All its stages are realized in the Mathcad mathematical processor. The article describes the technique of failure probability of gearing of drilling rig top drive system in accordance with criterion of bending endurance of teeth. Results of its realization for failure probability assessment of gearing at its operation in the heavy loading mode agree well with failure statistics. Also, the technique allows us to determine the probability of gearing failure for any load distribution laws during operation, including, when the loading mode is defined by sample.

Abstract (sommario):
The main focus of contribution is analysis of impact of selected parameters real gearing on dynamics of machine aggregate with gearing transmission. From point of gearing a lot of factors influence on the dynamics of the machine aggregate. The internal ones are mainly the choice of gearing basic parameters, material, production technology, accuracy of toothing and gearing clearance, but deformations, production accuracy, wear and working environment. Specifically, the electromechanical system consisting from direct-current motor and mechanical gearbox with gearing clearance is solved. Analysed machine aggregate coming out from fundamental dynamic model, composed from basic subsystems: source, gearing and driven mechanism, an impact to gearing and a mutual relation between gearing and the rest of system are looked for.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to design and optimize a powder metal gear through FEM-analyzes. The moment of inertia and weight of the gear shall be reduced at the same time as the demands on tension and bending stiffness are met. The gear that is used as reference and will be optimized is the standard gear in the FZG-rig at the department of Machine Design at KTH. The work is initiated with a literary study. After that a CAD-model of the gear and its pinion is created in Solid Edge. Then the reference gear is analyzed in the FEM-program Ansys and control calculations are made according to standards and handbooks. Thereafter different geometry and density variations are made and tested. The tests are then compared to the reference gear. By varying the density of the gear and varying the geometry of the waist of the gear several different optimization proposals could be made. By cutting material off the waist of the gear the weight can be reduced by 6 % with an increase in bending stress of 1 %. If a bigger increase in bending stress is allowed more material can be removed. If the bending stress increase is allowed to be 5 % a decrease in weight and moment of inertia of 14 % is obtained. With an increase in deformation of 5 % a decrease of 11 % in weight and moment of inertia was obtained. The different tested geometries behave relatively equal up to a 3 % decrease in weight with respect to deformation but begins to vary considerably if the weight is further decreased. Removal of material should be symmetric around every gear tooth to avoid transmission failure which also leads to increased noise. The results show that it is better to remove material under each gear tooth rather than under the root. It is also advantageous to remove material close to the flange. Further work is required to analyze and optimize the gears even more. Fatigue tests as well as different load cases should be analyzed.

Hu, Jun. "The kinematic analysis and metrology of cylindrical worm gearing". Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/807.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Worm gearing is very widely used, especially in heavy industry, but due to the complexity of worm gear geometry, worm gear research has lagged behind that for spur and helical gears. In the last decade, however, the potential for significant improvement in worm gearing has dramatically increased: computers have given greater freedom to analyse worm gearing; CNC machines make it possible to aim for optimised worm gear geometries with very high accuracy and the development of synthetic lubricants has substantially improved lubrication conditions. In the UK, over the last few years, research effort in the field of worm gearing has increased considerably. As a part of this recent activity in the UK, the author has been involved mainly in developing the analytical mechanics and metrology of worm gears. A method for the generalised 3D non-elastic worm gear mesh analysis and associated software have been developed and worm wheel metrology software has been implemented on a CNC measuring machine in the UK National Gear Metrology Laboratory, to allow, for the first time, analytical measurement of worm wheel tooth flanks. Combination of the mesh analysis software and CNC measurement of worm wheels has assisted in the design and manufacture of worm gears with modified tooth profiles. Two methods of 3D non-elastic worm gear analysis have been developed for conjugate action and non-conjugate action respectively. The conjugate analysis determines the lines of contact, sliding and rolling velocities, limitations of the working area (the envelope of contact lines on a worm surface and singularities on a wheel surface), principal relative curvatures and the orientations of contact lines. It is based on the B-matrix method [Zhang and Hu, 1989]. The non-conjugate analysis predicts entry and exit gaps, contact ratio, wear marking on the worm flank, instantaneous contact topology on all the engaged tooth flanks, total contact area, contact pattern and transmission error. This is based on numerical simulation of the actual worm gear running process under no-load. Although the non-elastic analysis models have been designed for any type of worm gearing, and have been used to study Cavex (ZC) wormgears and the meshing of a ZA Abstract worm with a helical gear, most of the work has been on involute (ZI) worm gearing, since this is, by far, the most commonly produced type in the UK. This thesis presents the work as follows: 1) The development of the B-Matrix kinematic method for conjugate analysis. The B-Matrix method, presented in chapter 2, elegantly simplifies the derivation and calculation procedures, since the geometric parameters and the motional parameters can be arranged in separate matrices. As a result, the models can be applied to different geometries and coordinate systems with no need for further difficult derivations. The method leads to an easier way of integrating the theory of various types of worm gearing into compact generalised models. It is much more convenient and reliable to let the computer formulate and solve matrix equations numerically, treating each matrix as a simple variable, than to develop analytically the corresponding long tedious non-linear equations. 2) The development of mathematical equations to allow CNC measuring machines to measure cylindrical worm wheels with respect to their mating worms. The measurements are 3-dimensional and absolute, in the sense that the results are the deviations from the theoretical geometries rather than comparative measurements relative to a (necessarily imperfect) master worm wheel. The measurement theory has been implemented on a particular CNC measuring machine. This is presented in chapters 3 and 5. 3) The development of the non-conjugate analysis. The fundamental basis of the non-conjugate analysis presented in this thesis is to rotate the worm wheel to bring its tooth flank into contact with the worm flank at each given angle of worm rotation, so that the no-load transmission error and gap contours can be determined. This method is suitable for both cylindrical and globoidal worm gears, since the rotation angles of worm and wheel are used to simulate the running process directly. Abstract The method also allows the wheel tooth flank to be obtained either by conjugate analysis of the hobbing process, or by analytical measurements or other methods (for example, when a theoretically-generated involute helical gear is used to mesh with a worm). This work is presented in chapter 4. 4) implementation of the non-elastic analysis theory. The non-elastic analysis software has been written for personal computers. In addition, dimensional calculations specified by BS 721 and commonly used hob design methods have been added to the non-elastic analysis software to increase user-friendliness. The software has been used to investigate the effects on the worm gear contact and performance of machining errors and profile deviations or modifications. The structure of this analysis software allows for the inclusion of new modules for other types of worm gearing without in any way disturbing the integrity of the program's existing abilities. The non-elastic analysis software is user-friendly with a "Windows" graphical user interface. Software reliability and error tolerance have been of particular concern during program development. This work is presented in chapter 5. 5) The software has been thoroughly validated against other published results and/or actual production. The software has been used extensively for both research and commercial purposes, and the user interface developed further in response to user feedback. Examples of these applications are given in chapter 7.

Dearn, Karl David. "An investigation into tribological and performance related aspects polymeric gearing". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2009. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.532276.

Abstract (sommario):
The benefits of using polymer and polymer composite gears are numerous and it is these in part that is fuelling the resurgent commercial interest in them for metal replacement applications, thought to be in the region of £160M per annum. This interest is further driven by the increasingly important need for considerate energy consumption and the drive for greater product efficiency. As the science and technology associated with polymeric gearing develops, so too do the complexities and demands of the application. Although traditionally employed in low load and speed applications and motion control, such advancements are pushing the limits of high performance polymer applications to unprecedented levels where hitherto high temperature and corrosive environments would have excluded them. Thus, the complex kinematics of gearing and the extreme environments in which polymer gears operate make such applications ideal candidates for material manufacturers to demonstrate the superiority of their proprietary polymers. Despite this resurgent interest, polymer gears have received only a fraction of the attention received by their metal counterparts. As a result, those choosing to specify polymers in demanding applications are faced with a lack of reliable design and testing data, with current standards and guidelines based on metallic dogma. Given the fundamental differences between the two materials, this has been proved to be inadequate. This thesis aimed to address a variety of performance aspects of polymeric gears, particularly focusing on temperature and tribological related effects. At its foundation was the previous research conducted by the Power Transmission Laboratory, at the University of Birmingham. Five research areas were covered, they were: - The analysis and estimation of bulk temperatures in polymer spur gears - Contact analysis of polymeric gears - Acoustic emissions and transmission error analysis: - External lubrication analysis with respect to measured efficiencies and surface damage: -A design and rating algorithm for polymeric gears: The research utilised empirical, numerical and analytical techniques to improve the understanding of the behaviour of polymeric gears, such that their performance and reliability could be improved. In addition to this, recommendations were given for future research directions.

Killeen, Michael. "Experimental and mathematical investigation into aspects of spatial involute gearing". Thesis, View thesis, 2005. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/20408.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a small part of a much larger work, the aim of which is to continue the transition from gear theory to gear practice. The thesis deals with some aspects of the testing and theoretical development of equiangular and plain polyangular gears respectively. Initial prototypes of the equiangular spatial involute gearing, a small subset of a general spatial involute gear set, developed in previous works are to be tested for both function and form. The tests, based on the principles of the single flank gear tester, investigate constancy of transmission ratio and use both electronic and mechanical means. The former of these highlights the shortcomings of some aspects of the experimental set up. Algebraic expressions are also developed for plain polyangular gearing, a more general form of spatial involute gearing. These equations demonstrate the links to the underlying kinematic principles and are, consequently, more robust. This is verified by their application to both the equiangular and plain polyangular cases. The expressions were checked by comparing their results to graphical and numerical models developed concurrently with the algebraic expressions. Initial investigations are also undertaken into turning the mathematical theory into gear machining theory.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract For moderating the edge contact of gear tooth surfaces on load, a new concept has been proposed on designing worm gearing. As a first step of research, restricting a field of application of the designing concept, a few methods for generating tooth surface of hourglass worm gearing having a small lead angle have been devised. This paper tries to apply this designing concept to wider general use — an hourglass worm gearings with a large lead angle. First, the worm axis displacement relative to the wheel axis is roughly calculated by means of elastic deformation theory. And, this idea is applied to the gear designs using two kinds of hourglass worm gearings. As a result, validity of this design concept is substantiated also in the case of large lead angle of worm gearing.

A modification of an involute gearing is presented by a modification of an involute and a longitudinal modification along the face width. In the contribution both of the modifications are presented and theoretical and practical methods for determination of their parameters are shown. Experimental methods of setting up of input data for design of modifications are brought in then. These data are prepared on the basis of measuring of deformations of gearwheels bodies, shafts and shafts supports. An attention is given to the influence on a size and position of a zone of contact of meshing teeth. A separate part deals with the appreciation of an influence of modification on a size of a noise and vibrations of involute gears. As far as a loading capacity of modified involute gearings, the attention is first given to the loading capacity in a contact stress between teeth faces. The comparison is made between loading capacity of an involute gearing with no modification and a gearing modified by various types of modifications. This comparison is made both by using a FEM and by experiment. Experiment is based on lifetime test of these gearing.

Abstract (sommario):
The increasing use of epicyclics for high powered marine and industrial applications has resulted in world wide interest in this type of gearing. The coaxial input and output, reduced losses, small size and low weight are some of the advantages. The use of a full size development test rig using the power circulation method has been fundamental to the evolution of double helical, flexible annulus epicyclics, and has led to a detailed understanding of their operating principles. This understanding has been essential for the analytical modelling and the development of innovative design concepts. The paper outlines some of the work which has been carried out in the test rig at NEI Allen Ltd - Allen Gears. The method of measuring the dynamic load sharing is discussed and some of the results which have led to improvements in the design and manufacturing methods are given. Test rig work continues currently with the development of low noise gears and vibration isolation.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This paper describes a globoidal-cam type gearing with roller-wheel composed of two lines of roller followers to obtain a no-backlash reduction gearing. A principal advantage of this system is the reduction of backlash of the gearing by holding the cam’s rib with the roller followers of each line. We suggest that the roller’s axis should make a reasonable angle to the wheel’s axis. By setting this angle to a suitable amount, the power loss of the gearing will be reduced significantly. The gearing of which roller’s axes are inclined can be applied to high speed and large torque gearing indicating a remarkable improvement upon roller-wheel gearing. A typical globoidal-cam type gearing is analyzed geometrically, its frictional loss of power in meshing is calculated, and a substantial reduction of friction loss was resulted. Additionally, the stiffness of the roller-wheel was estimated and is practically sufficient for our application.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract An analytical calculation method was developed to determine the main gearing data for beveloid gears with non-parallel non-intersecting axes. To validate the method and identify its limits, a parameter study was to be conducted. A two-stage fractional factorial experimental design was therefore devised to deliberately vary the gearing parameters. For each gearing, an unloaded contact simulation was carried out using the position of the contact pattern, the transmission error and the predefined gear backlash as quality characteristics. The results of the simulation were subsequently classified in three evaluation categories. Due to the generalizability of the method proposed, it can also be used for the design of other involute gearings. A modification of the equations revealed its applicability for spur gear pairs with no shaft angle and for crossed helical gear pairs with shaft angles up to 90°. The results for the beveloid gear pairs investigated using a wide range of parameters as well as those for the cylindrical and crossed helical gear pairs proved the validity of the method. In the case of outliers in the evaluation, the causes were identified and corrective actions were presented.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this research paper is to investigate the possibility of improving the efficiency of wind turbines by taking advantage of the wind speed variability. An active epicycloids gearbox system allowing a variable speed at the input shaft and delivering a constant speed at the output shaft is proposed herein. The gearing system consists of an assembly of spur and ring gears run and controlled by an electrical motor. The system acts as a continuously variable transmission (CVT) between the wind turbine hub and the electricity generator which requires an entry speed corresponding to an electrical grid frequency of 60 Hz. The active gearing system is designed using CAD software, and the gearing design theory is used to dimension the proposed epicycloids system. The kinematic gearing theory is used to establish the different gearing ratios of the system, and the kinematic velocity relationships between the gearing system stages. The forces and torques acting on the gearing system are computed using the equilibrium equations. Ideally, the electrical power consumed by the regulating motor system is minimal so that a maximum percentage of the generated electrical power is supplied to the electricity grid. The advantage of this gearbox configuration is that the power consumed by the regulating motor will be theoretically close to zero when the wind speed is about 10.5 mph, which is the average wind speed for many areas where wind turbines are installed. As the wind speed moves away from its mentioned average, the gearbox electrical controls activate a regulating motor to secure a constant speed at the generator input. Currently, a prototype of the proposed system is under tests and experimental data has already shown the constancy of the angular velocity at the generator input. The measurements of the mechanical power distribution between the different components of the system are still underway. A prony-break system is currently used for this purpose. It is expected that within a defined range of the hub angular velocities, the power absorbed by the regulating motor remains a small fraction of the power delivered by the electricity generator.

Abstract (sommario):
Information security and associated vulnerabilities have long been a pressing challenge, from the fundamental scientific backstage to the frontline across the most diverse sectors of society. At the tip of the iceberg of this problem, the citizens immediately feel that the reservation of privacy and the degradation of the quality and security of the information and communication on which they depend for the day-to-day activities, already of crucial relevance, are at stake. Naturally though, the challenges do not end there. There is a whole infrastructure for storing information, processing and communication, whose security and reliability depend on key sectors gearing modern society – such as emergency communication systems (medical, civil and environmental protection, among others), transportation and geographic information, the financial communications systems at the backbone of day-to-day transactions, the information and telecommunications systems in general. And crucially the entire defence ecosystem that in essence is a stalwart in preventing our civilisation to self-annihilate in full fulfilment of the second principle of thermodynamics. The relevance of the problem further encompasses the preservation of crucial values such as the right to information, security and integrity of democratic processes, internal administration, justice, defence and sovereignty, ranging from the well-being of the citizen to the security of the nation and beyond. In the present communication, we take a look at how to scientifically and technically empower society to address these challenges, with the hope and pragmatism enabled by our emerging pathways in information physics and complexity. Edging beyond classical and quantum frontiers and their vulnerabilities to unveil new principles, methodologies and technologies at the core of the next generation system dynamic intelligence and security. To illustrate the concepts and tools, rather than going down the road of engineered systems that we can ultimately control, we take aim at the bewildering complexity of nature, deciphering new secrets in the mathematical codex underlying its complex coevolutionary phenomena that so heavily impact our lives, and ultimately bringing out novel insights, methods and technologies that propel information physics and security beyond quantum frontiers.
